The optimum performance in mineral processing plants usually demands the optimum size reduction, which is frequently achieved by a closed grinding circuit. Due to the difficulty associated with fine size classification, the size separation efficiency in closed grinding circuit is usually very low, which leads to huge circulating load and significant overgrinding. Recent development of Der-rick Stack Sizer has made an efficient fine size separation down to 200 mesh with a satisfactory screening capacity. With the efficient fine size separation with Derrick Stack sizer, the problems commonly associated with typical closed grinding circuit, including high circulating load and over-grinding, have been eliminated. Feedback from numerous Stack Sizer applications in iron ore industry indicated that, compared with conventional fine size classification equipment, the circulating load achieved by Derrick screen was usually decreased from approximate 300% down to 60% or so, while the iron recovery has been increased by 6% to 8% only by more efficient size separation in the closed grinding circuit. To study this phenomenon, this paper discusses the relationship between size classification, circulating load and mineral recovery in the closed grinding circuit. A simulation model to predict the improvement in the grinding circuit from more efficient screening is also introduced with this paper.

The state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, appears on the national and international scene as an important producer of precious stones and the main gems are amethyst, citrine and agate. However, despite the immense potential of this mining activity, the extraction and processing of gemstones in Brazil present critical issues of infrastructure, which prevents a better development of these activities. In general, local production is still concentrated in small rudimentary mining. Recently some of these mines have begun to regularize their activities, in conjunction with the National Department of Mining Control. Besides these problems best practices for extraction activities and environmental control are not usually observed. Another problem which is placed in a critical way is the absence of aggregate value for the products of small mines. In this situation, the miners have great problems to obtain access to technology and adequate infrastructure. In most cases miners need negotiate their gems without processing, transferring most of the profit to intermediate traders. These results in heavy losses for the producer and for the communities involved. Given this scenario, the present study aimed at defining systems technically and operationally viable to be implemented in these communities in order to add value to gemstones. In this study best practices to thermochemical coloring systems, analysis of effect of raw materials and operating parameters on the final color of the gem were analyzed with attention.

"The effects of mixed collectors on some physicochemical parameters (thin film lifetime, kinetics of expansion of the three-phase contact, equilibrium three-phase contact angle and surface tension) involved in the elementary act of flotation were investigated experimentally.We have used the microscopic thin balance developed by Scheludko et al (1970) to study the stability and interactions within the thin film between the silica surface and air bubble with (i) a long chain C10 amine and (ii) a cationic/anionic surfactant systems consisting of mixtures of a long straight C10 chain amine with long straight chain C8, C10 and C12 sulfonates at 1:1 molar ratio. The experiments were performed at a range of concentrations at pH 6.5. The equilibrium contact angle was measured with a microscope technique using the modified Mingins-Sheludko method (Mingins and Scheludko, 1979). The surface tension was measured by the method of Wilhelmy (Adamson, 1960). It was found that the mixed surfactants caused lower contact angles, lower rates of the thin film rupture and longer film lifetime, compared to the pure amine system."

"This paper presents the performance of the flotation circuit of Minera Fresnillo PLC, Mexico. A plant survey was carried out on the lead banks and a size-by-size assay on the samples was conducted. The results indicate that the plant is treating fine particles in the flotation circuit. At least 30% of the particles in the feed are finer than 8 microns and that high amounts of Pb, Au, Ag and insolubles are in this particle size. It was also found that higher percentage of insolubles in the -8 micron particles are recovered in the final concentrate rather than being rejected in the tails. The presence of high amounts of insolubles in the concentrate is an issue of the company. The result of the plant survey provided valuable information for effective reduction of the insolubles in the concentrate and for plant optimization. The work conducted is part of the training of the students involved in a mine placement in the Alban Lynch Student Venture. INTRODUCTION Minera Fresnillo is one of the operating mines and the main contributor to the silver production of Fresnillo PLC group, the world’s leading producer of silver from ore. It is located in the mining district of Zacatecaz, Mexico, approximately 650 kilometers from Mexico City. The major minerals that make up the ore are galena, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, pyrargyrite, proustite, polybasite, pyrite and pyrrhotite. Minera Fresnillo has a capacity to treat 8300 tonnes of ore per day. The plant consists of semi-autogenous mill - ball mill – hydrocyclone circuit for primary grinding followed by silver-lead flotation then zinc flotation circuits. This paper reports the plant audit conducted in the silver-lead flotation circuit (Figure 1) of Minera Fresnillo. The circuit includes rougher, scavenger and two stages of cleaning. The tails from the scavenger goes to the zinc flotation circuit while the second cleaner yields the final silver-lead concentrate. The feed to the circuit has a particle size of 90% finer than 75 microns and generates a concentrate with grade of about 35% Pb, 5700 g/ton Ag, 16 g/ton Au and recoveries of 90% Pb, 90% Ag, 64% Au, respectively. Although the plant achieves their target concentrate grade and recovery, the concentrate also contains significant amount of insoluble materials which is about 18%. These insoluble materials consist of gangue minerals. The plant audit was conducted primarily to determine the possibility of further reducing the amount of insoluble materials present in the silver-lead concentrate."

"Current status of question about grinding stage effect to electrochemistry parameters of operation preparation slurry before intermediate selective flotation was assessed in the present scientific work. Needs of more detail study chemical reactions in the slurry preparation and flotation processes were shown. The ores are polymetallic sulphide type and the one are most difficult for mineral processing. The methodology allows increase information base during floatation tests. Ionometric methods and elements of neural network have been used in the study of mineral processing questions.We have also identified the relationship between the received values of the electrochemical parameters and the technological results in selective flotation. The optimal values of the electrochemistry parameters in operation of the preparation slurry before selective flotation has been found. The main effect of using the proposed methodology is to obtain scientifically based solutions to improve the technology parameters of flotation polymetallic sulfide ores. Challenging issue of selectivity of sulphide-polymetallic ores will be considered using case study of sulphidepolymetallic ores. It was shown that several factors are formed in ore grinding: formation of hydroxyl oxides of iron compounds, copper cation leaching, metal-sulphide and metal-sulphite complexes formation. The chemistry was revealed for current processes in slurry preparation operation before selective flotation. Quantitative assessment of interrelations between electrochemical parameters of slurry and process performance was given with using electrochemical control methods. Neuron network-based model was estimated based on data array and was allowed to establish optimum electrochemical conditions of metal-sulphite complex formation to provide maximum efficiency of selective flotation.INTRODUCTIONPhysical and chemical processes that take place in ore grinding have a significant impact on flotation selectivity and can cause low selectivity of the flotation process. "At present, research on the surface chemical properties of uranium minerals is very scanty, which restricts the research progress of uranium ore flotation process research. The research aimed at exploring the surface characteristics of two common uranium minerals and providing basis for flotation process to enrich uranium minerals in ore. This paper selected pitchblende and uraninite as the object of study, which are widely distributed in uranium deposits. We chose out the pure minerals of pitchblende and uraninite from different ores collected from different uranium deposits. By means of Zeta potential test and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) test, a preliminary study on surface characteristics of the pure minerals of pitchblende and uraninite was conducted. And the significance of the change of Zeta potential, the elements composition and valence state on the minerals surface for flotation was discussed. The research shows that, the Zeta potentials of pitchblende and uraninite in pure water are negative mainly when the pH value varies from 2 to 11, which maybe a result of the difference of ionization capacity between two kinds of oxy-compounds on the surface of minerals. On the surface of pitchblende and uraninite, the metal elements are mainly U, Th and Pb. U is mainly in the form of UO2, Th is mainly in the form of ThO2, and Pb is mainly in the form of Pb and PbO. Based on the surface characteristics of pitchblende and uraninite, we can select process and reagents appropriately in uranium ore flotation.INTRODUCTION Globally, the major challenges associated with exploitation of low grade ores are about finding economically feasible processes for reducing the mass of gangue minerals (Filippov et al., 2012). Among the beneficiation technologies of low grade uranium ores with complex minerals assemblage, flotation is the common process which is used to reduce production cost and eliminate the acid-consuming minerals (Li et al., 2016; Liu et al., 2015)."

We tried to convert paper sludge ash (PSA) into zeolitic product with high cation exchange capacity (CEC) through acid leaching. Typically, PSA from incineration of paper sludge contains a high percentage of calcium in the form of anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8) and gehlenite (Ca2Al2SiO7). It is difficult to convert the ash with a high Ca content into zeolites, or at least into more desirable zeolite phases. Acid leaching with HCl was applied to reduce the Ca content to synthesize zeolitic product with high CEC. The raw ash was treated with 1 M, 3 M, and 5 M HCl solution for 0.5~24 hours (the ratio of the ash to volume of HCl solution was 1/4), and then zeolitic product was synthesized from leached ash through the reaction with 2.5 M NaOH solution at 80 oC for 24 hours. During acid leaching, gehlenite is readily dissolved in a lower HCl concentration solution than anorthite. With increasing HCl concentration, the amounts of Ca, Mg, Si, Al, Fe and Ti extracted from the ash increased. Ca and Mg contents were easily extracted from ash than other elements. The contents of Ca and Mg extracted rapidly at initial stage, and then levelled off. The saturation times of Mg and Ca are almost 0.5 h using all concentrations of HCl solutions. After the synthesis from leached ashes, zeolite-A and -P were synthesized from ash leached in 1 M HCl solution, and 3 M and 5 M HCl solutions, respectively, regardless of leaching time. With in-creasing HCl concentration, the Ca content eluted from the product decreased, due to the removal of Ca via acid leaching before the synthesis, while the Na content eluted from the product increased to 3 M HCl and then decreased, which was almost similar to the CEC of the product, due to the ion exchange of Na-type zeolitic phase in the product. The change of zeolite phases in the product and the CEC of the product depend on the concentrations of Si and Al in the solution during the synthesis. The highest CEC of the product is about 220 cmol/ kg, which was synthesized from the ash leached in 3 M HCl solution.

Based on Slurry Electrolysis, and combined with the problems of extraction antimony, lead and their separation from complicated antimony-lead concentrate, a series of tests have been done in this paper. Using Slurry Electrolysis to treat complicated antimony-lead concentrate, antimony and lead can be separated in one step. And 2# metal antimony can be achieved in cathode directly at the same time. Lead in concentrate is restrained still in the residue at the form of PbCl2. After converting the residue with ammonium carbonate and removing sulfur with kerosene, the high quality of lead concentrate (Pb is above 45%, S is below 15%) and pure sulfur can be achieved, respectively. The recovery of all in Slurry Electrolysis process is as: Sb 95%, Pb 95%, Ag 80%, S 60%.

"The moisture in sintering is a very important parameter for the performance of the process. It allows that the granulation takes pace in an efficient way making the water bridges between the bigger particles used as nucleus and the finer particles that perform the coating of those coarse particles. The formation of the micro pellets is extremely important to prevent loss in permeability of the bed in the sintering grate, avoiding excessive fuel consumption and producing a quality sinter. The aim of this project is to use some of the methodologies for determine the saturation degree on ores and coal to determine the optimal moisture for sintering. In the sinter pot grate series, 3 to 4 assays in a series of 10 are required to determine the optimal moisture for the process. The saturation degree curve test has shown that is really viable to use this technique to skip those tests and go directly to the series to determine productivity and the coke / anthracite consumption. In an industrial scale can be used to adjust the water addition in the conventional mixing methods used in the sintering plants to increase productivity in the process.INTRODUCTION Sintering Sintering is a high temperature agglomeration process in which iron ore fines are partially melted and bonded together using fluxes and a source of fuel, usually coke breeze. The agglomerated product, sinter, has improved metallurgical properties making it an ideal ferrous burden that enable the passage of hot gases in the iron-making blast furnace. The sintering process is normally carried out over three basic stages: granulation, ignition/sintering, and product sizing. In the granulation stage, iron ore fines (usually a blend of selected ores), sinter return fines, fluxes and fuel, and are mixed with water and micro-pelletised in a drum or disc before being introduced in the main granulation circuit. Unknown and unpopular vibrational grinding mills possibilities to horizontal working chambers have been discussed. They can be realized under normal conditions with the typical values of vibrations applied with vibrational grinding which are: vibration frequency from 15 Hz to 50 Hz, vibration amplitude to 6 mm and vibration geometry. These possibilities constantly increase involving new raw materials and processes. Vibration grinding is possible with other technological process accompanied by intensified technological processing, while the process decreases. In this study, a hydrometallurgical treatment involving solvent extraction of zinc using D2EHPA (di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid) has been investigated to recover zinc from an industrial zinc leach residue. The residue was leached with sulfuric acid producing leach liquor which was subjected to solvent extraction for enrichment of zinc and removal of impurities. Operating variables for the zinc extraction process, such as pH of the mixed solution (0.5~5.0), concentration of D2EHPA (5%~40%, w/w), temperature (25~60°?C), A/O volumetric phase ratio (1/2~4/1), concentration of tri-butyl phosphate (TBP) as modifier (3%~7%, w/w), concentration of NaR2RSOR4R in aqueous phase (0.05M, 0.1M, 0.2M) were also studied. Practically all zinc was extracted from the aqueous solution at pH 2.5 with 20% w/w D2EHPA in kerosene. At this operating condition, zinc could be extracted at one theoretical stage at A/O phase ratio of 1/1, as calculated by the McCabe-Thiele method.

Selection of mill size for reducing a feed material of a given size to the desired product size is generally based on the specific energy estimate obtained from Bond test. Over the last thirty years or so, an attempt has been made to develop a more accurate and powerful alternative approach based on the characterization of the particle breakage kinetics and material transport through the mill over a range of operating conditions of interest and correlating the degree of size reduction achieved with the net specific energy input to the mill. Particle breakage kinetics are described in terms of the specific grinding rate and breakage distribution parameters for the individual size fractions. Precise estimates of these parameters and the net energy input to the test ball mill (a laboratory or pilot scale mill) are important for development of desired energy-size correlations. In this context, three tasks are important: (a) preparation of the feed charge, (b) design of batch grinding experiments and (c) computational technique used for estimation of the breakage rate and breakage distribution parameters. This paper highlights several aspects of these three tasks that have been overlooked by researchers working in this field, and describes a more appropriate approach for estimation of model parameters and specific energy input. Several examples are included based on the data available in the literature and those generated in our laboratories to illustrate important points.

"Most coal supply contracts include strict limitations on the moisture content of the products. This limitation exists because of calorific, transport cost, and handling reasons. Managing the retention time on product stockpiles to facilitate drainage commonly controls the moisture content in coarser coal products. A large-scale pilot rig has been commissioned to facilitate research in this regard. A stockpile of about 15 tonnes of a typical washed power station feed coal from the South African Witbank coalfield was loaded onto a 6 x 6 m platform on load cells. The platform was shielded from the elements, like rain and wind, and an artificial rain sprinkler system was installed. A variety of rainfall intensities and durations were simulated and the water accumulation and run-off was measured. The material was also sampled for moisture and particle size before and after the series of tests. At the same time, the drainage characteristics of the same coal were determined in smaller scale drainage columns for comparison. Data is presented in this paper on the drainage rates, maximum accumulated moisture, final moisture, and the effect of evaporation. The results showed that for all rainfall patterns tested, drainage ceased after 2 - 3 days, but evaporation continued for at least the time period under investigation, albeit at a low rate. Evaporation contributed to dewatering at rates that depended on wind, temperature and humidity conditions. This caused a slow reduction in moisture content even after the run-off had ceased. The value of the final moisture depended on the coal PSD. It was also found that the intensity and duration of the more intense rainfall events did not significantly affect the maximum water accumulation, with drainage rates equaling the corresponding water addition rates which suggested that water ran off over the surface of the stockpile with limited penetration. During more intense rainfall scenarios, some penetration was apparent."

The present paper is about the restoration of the molybdenum production in the floatation plant of Ellatzite-Med AD in Bulgaria. The process, based on a working design, includes the construction of a new floatation molybdenum section in the existing molybdenum department of the Floatation Plant using the so called Vemco inert-gas floatation machines, made especially for the molybdenum floatation. While in the ordinary floatation machines, block impellers create suspension of the air, sucked from the atmosphere with the slime particles of the concentrate, which creates conditions for oxidizing the reagent, Vemco inert-gas floatation machines are covered with hermetic lids and the air inside the chamber is used. The technology, suggested by Geotechkoper Ltd. for making the working project, employs special machines from Dor Olliver Aimco, suitable specifically for molybdenum floatation in order to reduce the oxidizing of the reagent sodium hydrosulphate. Also the transport of the chamber product is done in hermetic conditions as the molybdenum flotation is done in two floatation rows and refining operations 3 to 8 are placed in the second row. Thus in the basic molybdenum floatation together with the first and second refining operations, which are hermetically closed, an ambient condition with low content of oxygen is created, that is about 8% for oxygen and about 92% of nitrogen, in which the oxidizing process is extremely reduced. This in turn results in reducing the consumption of the reagent depressor ? sodium hydrosulphate. In that way there is an improvement of the economical indices of the molybdenum production.

A new sensor based sorting system related to complex image analysis has been developed at Comex AS - Norway. It makes it possible to separate different mineral particles regarding their color, shape, texture, size, density and indirectly their composition. The sorting system has been successfully tested and applied for sorting minerals providing high separation efficiency in the range of 95-99.9 %. The main advantage of this system is connected with its universality where many material parameters are analyzed in the same processing unit by a single passage.

The value creation with kaolin clays depends on removing the colored impurities which manifests in to higher brightnessone of the most sought after properties on applications such as paper coating, paint and others. The processes for removing impurities include magnetic separation, froth flotation and selective flocculation. While the flotation and selective flocculation processes exploit the physico-chemical differences between the surface properties, the magnetic separation uses the bulk magnetic susceptibility differences between the diamagnetic clay and ferro- and para-magnetic nature of the impurities. The major advantage with magnetic separation remains high yield and no or low reagent usage. However, the magnetic separation technology suffers from low separation efficacy when finer colored impurities (<1 µm) are encountered in the feed. Use of stronger magnetic intensities during magnetic separation showed limited success; nonetheless the adverse effect due to finer size range remains a dominant effect even at 5 Tesla magnetic field. Furthermore, the presence of diamagnetic colored impurities irrespective of their sizes can not be removed. Cytec Industries has recently developed a ?bolt-on? chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation that essentially embraces the best product performance attributes of flotation and selective flocculation while keeping the chemical usage to a minimum level and using the readily available magnetic separation equipment. The paper will outline the technology and illustrate optimization work at pilot plant magnet on a wide variety of crude accommodating the process needs and plant limitations. The major advantages of chemical enhancement technology to magnetic separation include: 1) simple extension to existing magnetic separation technology, 2) ability to produce comparable product in quality with cost effectiveness compared to flotation and selective flocculation, 3) removal of impurity minerals over wide size range, 4) removing non-magnetic impurities, 5) providing robust process with high process yield and 6) operation-friendly nature. Furthermore, chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation has also emerged as a platform for re-moving impurities at low levels in other mineral systems as well.

To date, intractable ore specific operational challenges such as poor heap geotechnical stability, permeability and high acid consumption rates associated with low grade (~1 wt%) nickel (Ni) laterites still makes the adoption of heap leaching processing unattractive. This paper presents some highlights of drum agglomeration, column leaching and characterization studies undertaken to foster the understanding and knowledge of some of the desirable product attributes of -2 mm and -15 mm, low grade saprolitic (SAP) and goethitic (G) Ni laterite feed ores and their blends (SAP/G). For column leaching, 5-40 mm agglomerate beds were continuously irrigated with 200 g/dm3 H2SO4 solution at 8.5 dm3/m2/h rate over 100 days. Ni, Co, Fe, Al and Mn extraction rates, free acid concentration, agglomerate bed slump and structural changes were determined as a function of time. The results show that at equivalent feed masses, except -15 mm G which displayed slower, pseudo-layering based behaviour, all the feeds (single and blends) displayed coalescence controlled agglomeration behaviour at varying binder dosages. Whilst the agglomerate compressive strength of the G ore was markedly higher than that of SAP ore, those of the blends were substantially similar. At fixed column leaching conditions, the Ni/Co extractions and acid consumption were higher for SAP ore whilst the agglomerate bed slump was lower than those for G ore. The bed of agglomerates produced from -2 mm G/-15 mm SAP blend was more stable than that for the -2 mm G/-2 mm SAP blend agglomerate, the latter experiencing blockage within 24 h of acid irrigation due to agglomerates breakdown. The Ni/Co extractions and acid consumption rates obtained for agglomerates of -15 mm G/-2 mm SAP blend were lower than expected based on the ratios of the SAP and G ores within the blend composition. The findings suggest that judicious saprolitic and limonitic ores’ blending could reduce acid consumption rate, improve the agglomerate bed robustness and enhance bed percolation behaviour under prolonged acid irrigation periods during heap leaching of lateritic ores of variable mineralogy.

The flotation efficiency of magnetic concentrate of the Anhui hematite ore, which includes a great quantity of iron-bearing silicates, has been studied through reverse flotation test with a new type of collector Fly-102. The results indicate that collector Fly-102 has a strong adaptability to the variation of temperature, when the flotation temperature is in the range of 10? to 35?, using collector Fly-102 can obtain good flotation indexes. Collector Fly-102 has a strong adaptability to the variation of the slime contents and grades of the flotation samples. When the content of slime and the grade of the flotation feeds are 30% and 55.63% respectively, under the condition that the temperature is 15?, the open circuit flotation test was carried out with collector Fly-102. After one-stage roughing, one-stage cleaning and two-stage scavenging, a better result is got, the grade of iron concentrate reaches 67.12%, and the recovery of iron concentrate comes up to 84.15%.

Clay sorbents from the North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin represent important but still some-what neglected accessory raw material. Submitted paper is concerned with relation between mineral structure, sorptive efficiency and reclamation exploitation of these rocks. Characters and localities of main clay sorbents from the North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin are shortly evaluated in an introduction. In next part, methodology of mineralogy survey for these accessory raw materials is stated, it is based on diffract analyse with D 5000 Siemens X-ray diffracto-meter. At the conclusion results are stated of mineralogy analyses from several clay sorbents. The determination of the zeolite and montmorillonite localities was accentuated. The paper presents also possibilities of practical clay sorbents utilization, especially by reclamation works.

In this paper, the hydrophobicity of chalcopyrite particles produced with different laboratory mills has been studied; different grinding mechanism in themills made some changes in particles shape, Image Analysis (IA) method was used to determine the shape properties of chalcopyrite particles which are ground by a laboratory ball mill, rod mill and ceramic ball mill. The shape characters are stated in terms of shape factors such as circularity, convexity, roundness and regularity factor. Hallimond tube was used to float chalcopyrite particles followed by determination of critical surface tension of particles, this parameter used as a criterion to study the wetting behavior of chalcopyrite particles. The correlation between shape properties and critical surface tension of chalcopyrite particles showed that the hydrophobicity of chalcopyrite was affected by the shape. Investigations showed that the circular, round and more convex particles that produced with ceramic ball mill had lower hydrophobicity with higher critical surface tension (?c). The results also showed that the hydrophobicity of particles ground by ball and rod mills increased with the decrease of roundness, circularity, convexity and regularity factor of particles.
