A pilot scale AG milling campaign was conducted at the AngloAmerican Platinum pilot plant in South Africa. Different blends of hard:soft (silicate:chromite) and coarse:fine particles in the AG mill fresh feed were tested. The effects of multi-component feed on the pilot scale autogenous grinding are presented in this paper, and can be used as a guideline for multi-component feed blends for AG milling. Preliminary modelling and simulation for the multi-component AG mill model are also included.

"The Athabasca Bituminous Sands have been subject to sporadic investigations since the beginning of the century. It is probable, however, that much of what has been learned and achieved concerning the deposit has been accomplished in the last few years.Current exploratory techniques, generally speaking, involve a moderate amount of coring. Electrologs and often radioactive logs are run on most holes and certain types of these archieved excellent qualitative analysis when backed up by some core analysis for calibration. Exploration - is moving back from the river and consequently a permanent network of access roads has been developed within the last few years. Most of the operations take place in the winter time. There are about 90 permit holders at the present time.Some exploratory techniques are set up to go into recovery experiments where rich tar beds are found. It is probable that in the final analysis there will be several successful methods of extraction and that both mining and various in situ techniques will be applicable depending upon the problem locally."

Since 2008 rapid advances have been made in technologies for the sensing and sorting of ores, particularly copper, and copper-related ores. Advances include significant increases in the sensitivity and throughput, specifically in the area of bulk sorting. Such advances were not possible without contemporaneous advances in the understanding of copper orebodies, in particular the understanding and quantification of the heterogeneity required within an orebody to support an effective sort, regardless of the technology deployed to do this. This paper covers fundamental knowledge in the characterization of orebodies and their ores for sorting; relationships between measures of heterogeneity and sorting response; the design of bulk sorting systems that can exploit this heterogeneity to add value to copper operations; and, a quantification of the value that can be generated from bulk sorting at a case study mine. INTRODUCTION Society currently puts increasing pressure on industries to move towards cleaner and more efficient means of production, and the mining industry is no exception. Mining additionally faces other factors increasing the pressure to be more efficient: high-grade and easily accessible reserves have become largely depleted, therefore the mined grade at operations across most commodities, including and in particular copper, is decreasing. Additionally, the grade of new discoveries in the sector continues to decrease (Schodde, 2011). Factor in the high capital cost of processing facilities and the low levels of efficiency of current grinding circuits, and the situation for such mines becomes dire. Sorting, by maximizing the amount of ore extracted while simultaneously reducing the waste content in ore delivered to downstream processes (whether simply transport and crushing, or more sophisticated circuits such as grinding and flotation or leaching) has long been of interest to mining operations and projects struggling with low margins (Bamber, 2012). However, until recently sorting technologies that are both cost effective and effective at such high throughputs have not been commercially available.

ABSTRACT The Goldex mining and milling complex is operated by Agnico-Eagle and is located in the Abitibi greenstone region of northwestern Quebec, Canada. Commercial production started in 2008. Average gold recovery is 93.5% with approximately 68% of gold recovery coming from the gravity circuit. During the first three years of production, three gravity audits were carried out to optimize performance of the gravity circuit. This paper presents results of the audits and the development of a model linking gravity and overall gold recovery, and outlines improvements made to increase gravity performance and reduce operating costs.

A glance at the map discloses the fact that the Pacific Great Eastern railway either traverses or crosses some of the most important rivers of the province: the Squamish with its branches the Stawamus, Mamquam and Cheakamus; and the Green, Lillooet, Birkenhead, Fraser and Quesnel rivers. Each of these and some of their tributary streams, having their ?sources and upper reaches in the higher altitudes in regions of abundant snowfall, is capable in greater or less degree of furnishing water under suitable heads for the economic production of power. Beginning at its present terminus at Squamish the railway has the only hydro-electric development within its territory among the whole list of streams mentioned. A 225 horsepower installation at the edge of the East branch of the Squamish river, using water from Stawamus river, a branch of the former, under a head of 418 feet, is a modest beginning. Two or three additional sites, where water may be used under somewhat similar heads, may be found on this little stream. Next above Squamish, along the route of the railway, is the Mamquam, a long tributary of the Squamish from the eastern slopes. It has a drainage area of something like 130 square miles with widely varying discharges of from less than 50 to about 14,000 cubic feet per second. The preliminary investigations so far have disclosed no suitable storage sites, so the Mamquam may be regarded as a small continuous power stream - probably less than 1000 horsepower.

Global mine hoisting regulations require safety fall arrest systems to be installed on vertical conveyance systems capable of safely decelerating and supporting a fully loaded conveyance in the event of a rope severance. Most current arresting systems are incapable of producing controlled safe deceleration rates. Although safety ?dogs? achieve marginally acceptable results on wooden guides, difficulties arise in achieving safe deceleration performance requirement where safety arrest systems operate on steel shaft guides. Previously, arresting systems capable of operating with steel guides have been incapable of producing controlled deceleration rates during the arresting of free-falling conveyances. Most are ?instanton? systems, whereby an occupant inside a conveyance being arrested would be subjected to unacceptably high deceleration forces. This paper briefly highlights the background to the selection process of Rio Tinto?s Technical Staff of a suitable Mine Conveyance Safety Fall Arrest System for #1 Shaft at Rio Tinto Oyu Tolgoi Mine, Mongolia. It also describes the Drop Test and Free Fall Test procedure and the results leading to the acceptance of the Horne Group Levelok® Emergency Braking Technology for the Oyu Tolgoi #1 Shaft in Mongolia. The paper highlights Rio Tinto?s primary objective for the selection of this advanced technology on their primary production shaft cage system as an emergency safety catch braking system combined as an advance hydraulic chairing system. It describes the design and operational parameters and the 'Fail to Safe' interfacing with current automated mine hoist systems.

"Sorting technologies have the potential to reduce energy use in comminution by rejecting uneconomic ore before feed material enters the mill. However, a major challenge for sorting porphyry copper ores is providing a basis of discrimination between valuable and non-valuable fragments, due to their complex mineralogies and textural features. Microwave heating in combination with infra-red detection (MW-IR) has been shown to provide upgraded feedstock for certain ores at bench scale. Selective heating of copper sulphide minerals compared to the gangue leads to an increased thermal response for valuable fragments, providing the basis for sorting.Rapid scale up of MW-IR from bench scale to a 100 t/h continuous pilot plant facility has been facilitated by the design of microwave choking structures to allow continuous operation at industrially meaningful throughputs, whilst meeting health and safety and electromagnetic compliance standards, and the integration of materials handling with electromagnetic systems.Laboratory batch testing on a pilot scale microwave system has been undertaken to investigate the thermal response of copper ores under industrial conditions, at microwave energy inputs up to 1 kWh/t. These results provided the operating window and recommended test conditions for the continuous pilot plant. Sortability curves predicted in the laboratory are in good agreement with separations achieved during continuous pilot plant operations. The potential microwave sortability of a number of ores has been studied, allowing informed decisions to be made about potential ore candidates based on mineralogy. Future development of the technology will be underpinned by the creation and validation of scale up concepts for 1000 t/h operations. Understanding the value proposition for individual sites/applications will be central to unlocking the potential economic and environmental benefits of microwave sorting."

X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (XRF) is used at various stages of gold refining. Initially, incoming impure gold is analysed for deleterious elements such as As, Cd, Hg, Se, and Te. Based on the levels of these impurities the material can be returned to the client or accepted for refining. XRF is also used to determine the metal concentrations after the impure gold has been melted and sampled. This information is used to assist the final Fire Assay determination of gold and silver. An energy dispersive XRF is used to determine the end point of chlorination refining step.

"The copper-molybdenum property of Brenda Mines Limited is located in the Okanagan district of British Columbia, approximately 25 miles west of Kelowna. The Okanagan Valley is a resort and fruit-growing area, and therefore pollution control measures are more stringent than in some remote areas.The Brenda plant began production in April 1970 and is operated at a rate of 24,000 tons per day. The plant site is located at an elevation of 4,800 feet, which is approximately 3,600 feet above the level of Okanagan Lake. The site is in the Okanagan drainage basin.The major consideration in the design of the system was the prohibition of any downstream discharge. It was therefore necessary to redaim as much water as possible and to minimize the addition of fresh water to the system. The maintenance of a water balance is of critical importance.This paper will outline the major design criteria for the systems and the site investigations which were carried out. The design and construction of the facilities will be de-scribed and current operating experience will be outlined."

There is a lack of electrochemical studies of oxidized gold ores since the majority of previous studies were conducted with sulphidic gold ores. In this study, the influence of agitation and iron oxide minerals, i.e. magnetite, hematite, and maghemite on gold leaching was investigated by means of galvanic and passivation phenomena. Cyclic voltammetry studies of Roasted Gold Ore (RGO) in de-aerated electrolyte have shown one oxidation and one reduction reaction while three oxidation and one reduction peaks were observed with gold electrode. Galvanic coupling results by Zero Resistance Ammeter (ZRA) mode indicated that magnetite showed a negative effect on gold dissolution while maghemite and hematite showed a positive effect, relatively, as a result of higher galvanic corrosion rates. Generally, gold dissolution was found to increase in the initial 15 minutes. Increasing agitation speed from 100 to 400 rpm resulted in higher galvanic corrosion rates for RGO, magnetite, and maghemite electrodes, while 250 rpm was found to be optimum for hematite electrode. Passive products such as silver and iron-oxide were identified by XPS and SEM-EDS analysis, respectively.

Although the measurement of blast vibration close to the blasthole is critical to the understanding of rock fragmentation mechanisms and blast damage in the rock masses, limited experience for such monitoring exists. Because much higher vibration amplitude and frequency ranges are expected in rock masses close to an explosive charge as compared to far field vibrations, different problems from those for the far field monitoring must be considered for near field blast vibration monitoring. Currently, guidelines for design of the near field blast monitoring systems do not exist. This paper describes the development of an integrated technique for vibration monitoring close to a blast hole, including selection and installation of transducers, design of a monitoring system and signal recording. A densified cement was designed for grouting accelerometers in order to match p-wave impedance between the rock and grout. The monitoring technique described has proven suitable for blast vibration monitoring within 2 m to 15 m of a blast hole having loading conditions similar to production blasts.

"The use of approved fire-resistant hydraulic fluids in equipment operating underground was made mandatory in British Columbia by amendment to the Provincial Mines Regulation Act effective January 1, 1975. This paper covers the action taken to achieve this, in the largest underground metal mine in British Columbia. Some evaluation of costs and effects based on experience to date is included.BackgroundAn amendment to the Mines Regulation Act of the Province of British Columbia was passed in July 1974 as follow s: "" Rule 111 (b) Hydraulic Fluids. After the first day of January 1975, all hydraulic fluids used in equipment operating underground shall be of a fire-resistant type accept able to the chief inspector.""Unquestionably, its intent was justified as a safety improvement measure. The list of fires in mines involving machinery where hydraulic fluid was a factor in the fires is long and sobering. In British Columbia, in a 22-month period from 1972 to 1974, there were six fires in metal mines resulting in extensive equipment damage and injury to four workmen. Nevertheless, no provision was made for research or development of systems modifications compatible with conditions encountered in B.C. and, as late as June 1977, the Mining Association of British Columbia continued to argue that fire suppression systems should be considered sufficient until a universal suitable hydraulic fluid could be developed. The sole concession was to issue permits for continued use of mineral oil in equipment bought prior to 1975 in order to allow producing operations to continue. The burden of developing the necessary technology was laid on the industry.The Sullivan Mine at Kimberley, the largest and longest established underground mine in the province, and Cominco's most important source of ore s for its smelter at Trail, B.C., was at the outset of a conversion from conventional to trackless mechanized mining methods in pillar recovery operation s. Introduction of fire-resistant hydraulic fluid s had to be done in a period of change, in many instances on equipment for which no data existed, and called for research which had to be done while retraining the work force.The introductory phase is complete. All equipment is on FRF, the requirements of Rule 111(b) are being satisfied, and a number of research and development programs continue."

There is a significant demand for new high strength steels with fine grain sizes for structural applications. One approach in this regard is to develop hot-rolled HSLA steels where refining the microstructure leads to increased strength levels, e.g. 700 MPa yield strength, that can be attained by suitable modifications of chemistry and processing. Here, an HSLA steel is investigated that contains 0.05wt%C-1.65wt%Mn-0.20wt%Mo¬0.07wt%Nb-0.02wt%Ti and approaches the above strength class. The ability to control and predict the mechanical properties of hot rolled steel depends strongly on the thermomechanical processes, which the steel undergoes. The final microstructure and, thus, the properties of the hot-rolled steel are a function of the austenite decomposition obtained during accelerated cooling on the run-out table and precipitation during coiling. The austenite-to-ferrite phase transformation under run-out table conditions has been investigated using a Gleeble 3500 thermomechanical simulator equipped with a dilatometer. The effects of cooling rate and initial austenite microstructure including the degree of work hardening on austenite decomposition kinetics and ferrite grain refinement have been quantified. Results show that grain refinement can be optimized by the presence of work hardened austenite and accelerated cooling. Based on the experimental results, a model is proposed to predict the transformation start temperature and the resulting ferrite grain size for run-out table cooling conditions.

ABSTRACT The subject of gold flotation has been reviewed extensively. Most of these reviews focus on the theories of gold flotation and the physical and chemical effects that may impact the efficacy of the gold flotation process. The current status of gold flotation chemistry as it is being applied in industry has not been widely addressed. This paper reviews current gold flotation practice and research advancements and discusses how these applications tie in with the current understanding of gold flotation chemistry. Survey results from worldwide gold flotation operations are analyzed. Potential future areas of gold flotation research are highlighted.

"Abstract- In the southern Gaspé Appalachians, gold mineralization is spatially associated with the Acadian dextral strike-slip Grand Pabos-Restigouche fault system. Two different structurally-controlled gold prospects, the Lac Arsenault and the Saint-André-de-Ristigouche, are described to unravel the genesis of gold mineralization in this part of the Canadian Appalachians.At the Lac Arsenault gold prospect, gold mineralization consists of Au-As-Pb-Zn-Cu-(Ag) polymetallic fault-filled quartz veins with laminated textures emplaced in brittle-ductile sinistral X shear fractures. Mineralized veins are hosted by Middle Ordovician graywacke of the Arsenault Formation, belonging to the Dunnage Zone, the Early Paleozoic oceanic domain of the Appalachians. Terrigeneous rocks of the Arsenault are regionally metamorphosed at the lower greenshist facies and the mineralized veins are included in a zone of Fe-carbonate alteration.The Sb-Au-As mineralization of the Saint-André-de-Ristigouche gold prospect, in the southwestern Gaspé area, comprises extension veins in the extension direction emplaced in brittle conditions. Mineralized veins are hosted by calcilutite and laminated silty and argillaceous limestone of the Early Silurian part of the White Head Formation, which belongs to the Gaspé Belt, the Middle Paleozoic successor basin in the Gaspé Appalachians. Metamorphic grade of the White Head Formation in the southwestern Gaspé area is very low, but the gold mineralization is included in a zone of hydrothermal propylitic alteration which includes two Cu-skarn mineral occurrences. The Lac Arsenault gold prospect has many characteristics of "greenstone-hosted quartz-carbonate vein" deposits whereas the southwestern Gaspé area, which includes the Saint-André-de- Ristigouche gold prospect, shows affinities with the geological setting of sediment-hosted gold deposits (Carlin-like deposits). The two gold prospects are controlled by the Grand Pabos- Restigouche fault system but they were not emplaced at the same level in the crust. Acadian strikeslip fauting played a major role in their respective genesis in providing channelways for ore-bearing fluids. The recognition of the analogy of the geological setting of the southwestern Gaspé area with that of Carlin-like mineralization gives new ideas for exploration in the area and elsewhere in the Appalachians.Résumé - Dans le sud des Appalaches de la Gaspésie, on trouve des minéralisations aurifères spatialement associées au système de failles de coulissage dextre acadien de Grand Pabos-Restigouche. Deux indices très différents, Lac Arsenault et Saint-André-de-Ristigouche, sont décrits pour évaluer la genèse des minéralisations aurifères à contrôle structural de cette partie des Appalaches canadiennes. Au Lac Arsenault, la minéralisation aurifère comprend des veines polymétalliques à Au-As-Pb- Zn-Cu-(Ag) en remplissage de failles. Ces veines à texture laminaire se retrouvent dans des zones de cisaillement fragiles-ductiles senestres de type X. Les veines minéralisées sont encaissées dans les grauwackes d’âge Ordovicien moyen de la Formation d’Arsenault appartenant à la zone de Dunnage, le domaine océanique du Paléozoïque précoce des Appalaches canadiennes. Les roches terrigènes de l’Arsenault sont métamorphisées régionalement au faciès inférieur des schistes verts et les veines aurifères sont dans de larges zones d’altération dolomitique (Fe-carbonate).Dans le sud-ouest de la Gaspésie, la minéralisation à Sb-Au-As de Saint-André-de-Ristigouche est dans des veines d’extension comprises dans la direction d’extension et mises en place dans des conditions de déformation fragile. Les veines minéralisées sont encaissées dans les calcaires argileux et les calcilutites de la partie silurienne de la Formation de White Head qui appartient à la ceinture de Gaspé, le bassin successeur du Paléozoïque moyen des Appalaches de la Gaspésie. The paper will outline the destructive test methods and test procedures including the evaluation criteria currently used at the Materials Testing Laboratory (MTL), Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, a laboratory approved by the Ontario Minister of Labour for the purpose of testing or examining mine shaft ropes or other hoisting appliances. For the evaluation of the mechanical properties of rope samples used in "ultra-deep" single-lift shafts, additional discard criteria used in Ontario, Quebec and South Africa shall be presented. Most of the methods and test procedures currently used at MTL can also be found in the current CSA G4-00 Standard, Steel Wire Rope for General Purpose and for Mine Hoisting and Mine Haulage, published in November 2000. In this latest or sixth edition of CSA Standard G4-00, a new Clause 14 has been added outlining the requirements for in-service destructive testing of steel wire ropes for mine hoisting applications. The CSA G4-00 Standard is also intended for the manufacturing of new ropes, and includes requirements for raw materials and construction features for round strand and flattened strand rope, and locked coil rope in bright and galvanized finish. To-date the Ontario Mining Regulations require only that destructive test of new ropes be performed in accordance with CSA Standard G4-00, but does not require conformity to the Standard, and on the other hand the inservice wire ropes are required to be tested in accordance with CSA G4 and thus require conformity. The author recommends that the Ontario Mining Regulations (and regulations of other mining jurisdictions) be improved in order to ensure quality control in the manufacturing of wire ropes destined for mines in Ontario (and Canada). Also, the author recommends the revision of the CSA G4-00 Standard by the technical committee in order to address manufacturer?s concerns with respect to compliance, and harmonize the Standard with Internationally recognized Standards.

"Gold has been found in many parts of the Bridge River district of British Columbia; but it is from a relatively small area in the valley of Cadwallader creek that most production has come. The ore-bearing area measures 1/2 mile in width by 3 miles in length; and for convenience it is called the Cadwallader gold belt in this paper. In this belt are found the Bralorne and Pioneer mines and in addition several prospects under development.The gold of the Cadwallader gold belt occurs in quartz veins averaging about 3 feet in width and containing about ½ oz. of gold a ton. Except for a relatively small amount of silver, no other metals are produced from these veins. The ore-bearing veins occur in a variety of rocks. They occupy reverse faults and tension fractures belonging to a distinctive fracture system. Some of these structures are ore-bearing over lengths exceeding 5,000 feet and depths exceeding 3,700 feet. The production of the Bralorne mine (1932-1945) is 996,383 oz. gold and 190,709 oz. silver; that of the Pioneer mine (1930-1945) is 777,588 oz. gold and 135,698 oz. silver. These two mines have together distributed about $25,000,000 in dividends.The Bridge River district first attracted attention in 1863* when prospectors were attracted by its small but rich placer gold deposits. Most of the important lode deposits of the Cadwallader gold belt were discovered in 1897 (11). Many years of desultory development followed and it was not until 1928 and 1932 that the Pioneer and Bralorne mines, respectivdy, entered into profitable production."
