"The availability of environmental data is a major concern in the development of an exploration project through the permitting and feasibility stages. The collection of these data should ideally start very early in a major exploration program. Although a large proportion of the environmental data can also be used for exploration purposes, (e.g. stream-sediment, soil, and rock analyses), environmental sampling will rarely have been initiated at an early date. For the Windy Craggy project, a major environmental concern is the potential for generation of acid rock drainage from waste-rock piles. The project is reviewed with respect to the environment of the deposit, deposit geology, mineralization and reserves, the sequence of exploration activities to the present, the potential for the development of acid rock drainage, the geochemistry and water quality, and the integration of exploration and environmental databases and their application to environmental planning. IntroductionIn the classical sense of exploration of a mineral deposit, the efforts throughout exploration are routinely directed at confirming the existence of the deposit and defining its extent, grade and continuity. Environmental issues are usually tackled separately, possibly by different personnel at a later date. When that is the case, an opportunity is lost to build, from an early date , a comprehensive database that (I) will satisfy the needs of conventional exploration and environmental monitoring, and (2) is usable as a predictive tool for environmental impact assessment.The concept of environmental geochemistry is not complex. The availability of environmental data is a major concern in the development of an exploration project to the feasibility and permitting stages. The collection of data should ideally start very early in any major exploration program. In many cases a significant proportion of the geochemical exploration data gathered early in the life of a project will also be used later for environmental purposes (e.g. stream-sediment, water, soil, and rock analyses). Rarely, however, will the data gathered in a geochemical exploration program provide information as complete as that attainable if environmental objectives had been considered in scoping the work.A knowledge both of local and regional geochemical processes can lead to a better understanding of environmental impacts. This understanding is the basis upon which good environmental management practices may be built. Geddes Resources Limited has undertaken a major study of the natural environment in the Windy Craggy area which includes geology, surface and underground waters, soils, stream sediments, glaciers and geomorphology (Geddes Resources Limited, 1990). "Abstract - Paleoproterozoic gold is found in two different volcano-sedimentary sequences and intrusive bodies separated by 600 km within the Guiana Shield. The 2148 Ma St-Élie granite intruded volcanic-arc sequences of the Paramaca Group, whereas the 2096 Ma Omai stock penetrated backarc/ island-arc sequences of the Barama-Mazaruni Group. Positive ?Nd values suggest that both suites lack Archean crustal contaminants, which is consistent with an origin in an oceanic arc setting.The St-Élie deposit is characterized by quartz-dominant vein systems with minor metallic minerals, represented chiefly by pyrrhotite and pyrite. Biotite, calcite, and chlorite are the main gangue minerals. The alteration haloes at St-Élie feature a strong potassic zone, which is absent at Omai. The ore-controlling structures are ductile and the vein emplacement is related mainly to contemporaneous, high-angle ductile shear zones. The St-Élie deposit formed at temperatures >350°C. The stable isotopes values are compatible with a magmatic or metamorphic source.The Omai deposit is characterized by quartz-dominant vein systems with minor metallic minerals, represented mainly by pyrite. Ankerite, scheelite, albite, and chlorite are common gangue minerals. The vein emplacement is syn- to post-deformation and it is related mainly to brittle shear zones with low-angle, stockwork networks and breccia zones. The Omai deposit formed in a temperature range between 250°C and 170°C, much lower than the St-Élie deposit. The stable isotope values are compatible with mixing between deep-seated fluids of metamorphic or magmatic origin with surface- derived fluids.These differences between St-Élie and Omai are interpreted in terms of their depth of formation. Alteration patterns, structural elements, and paragenetic assemblages indicate that the gold at St-Élie was most probably emplaced at a mesozonal depth, whereas the Omai setting yields evidence for epizonal conditions."

THE Alaska Highway, in its course through British Columbia, traverses parts of two great physiographic divisions of Canada which are also distinctive geologically-the Cordillera in the western section and the Interior Plains in the eastern. The Cordilleran region in the portion of the Province with which this paper deals can be divided into four major northwest systems, known respectively from west to east as Coastal, Plateau, Cassiar-Omineca, and Rocky Mountains. The Coastal system consists solely of the Coast range except in the extreme northwest, where a part of the St. Elias range is included. The Coast range, characterized by mountains of great ruggedness,. is made up of an igneous complex of granitic rocks intruded chiefly as a great batholith. In places, spurs of these rocks extend into the Plateau heft, a partly mountainous tract largely occupied by quartzites, quartzose mica schists and their gneissic phases, and crystalline limestone with interbands and broad areas of chlorite, _hornblende, and sericite schists and bodies of intrusive granite gneiss-an assemblage of rocks known as the Yukon group. The Cassiar-Omineca system marks the divide between the Pacific and Arctic drainages. Its eastern boundary is well defined in the south by the Rocky Mountain Trench (see p. 229). The rocks of the system are, miainly, highly altered Palaeozoic sediments, but there are also Precambrian and Mesozoic rocks, the latter largely volcanic. The core of the system is granitic and there is evidence (see p. 221) to support the belief that it is of such a length as to constitute a batholith comparable to that of the Coastal system.

RICE LAKE-BERESFORD LAKE area, situated 100 miles northeast of Winnipeg (Figure 1), is Manitoba's foremost gold mining district, although it is exceeded in gold production in the Province by the Flin Flon base-metal mining district. At present, the area is producing at the rate of about one and three-quarter million dollars annually, almost entirely from the San Antonio and Gunnar mines. The total production to date is about $14,000,000. Of this total, over $7,000,000 has come from the San Antonio mine, over $2,000,000 from the Gunnar mine, about $4,000,000 from the Central Manitoba mine, and the balance from several smaller properties. The writer has led Geological Survey parties in the area for the past four summers. The present paper gives a summary of the results of this work and also includes the findings of C. S. Lord, who was in charge of a party for one year. Much valuable information was obtained from earlier published reports on the area and from officials of mining companies, to whom the writer is indebted for their kindly co-operation. It is impossible in this short paper to give proper credit to the earlier workers or to discuss certain points o disagreement between their conclusions and those presented here. The theory and practice of sampling of particulate material have been the focus of a continued attention on the part of the mining industry worldwide for almost a century now, because of its critical importance at all phases of a mining project, from exploration (bulk sampling, assaying) to production (grade control) and marketing (quality control). A powerful, complete theory was put together by P. Oy (1968 to i982), but its applications to gold ores have met with limited success to date, due to the inadequacy of its sampling variance and minimum sample mass determination formulae to the challenging case of gold ores. This paper presents a research project completed at Inco Exploration and Technical Services Inc., using a geostatistical approach, to shed light on the results of P.Gy's theory, and adapt them to the case of particulate gold ores. After a reminder of Gy's formulae and a simplified demonstration of the generic form of Gy's and more traditional formulae, an empirical approach, based on sampling experiments from four gold deposits, shows how Gy's formulae must be corrected to adjust to the case of gold ores. The generality of the results formula is then substantiated with a geostatistical analysis of the problem. A parameterized formula results, and indications are given on how to fit its parameters to experimental data. Application guidelines and charts to fit any case and budget are presented, along with a detailed practical example.

"Given the severe scarcity of fresh water sources in Northern Chile the use of seawater has become the only alternative to allow mining expansion. This option however poses several technological challenges as a result of the high concentration of natural salts that promote various forms of metal corrosion. Therefore the steel piping protection has been a constant challenge for design engineers responsible for solving the problems of corrosion. Known protection alternatives are varied and expensive, a few of them are rubber coatings, protection based centrifuged concrete, extra wall thickness of pipes in combination with corrosion inhibitors, extra wall thickness of pipes without using corrosion inhibitors, and the use of highly corrosion resistant steel materials.In this framework the aim was to study the corrosion kinetics of carbon steel pipe API 5L X70 under electrochemical and weight loss testing. The test conditions include a range of seawater velocities between 0.2 to 3.0 m/s.For electrochemical experiments the API 5L X70 steel specimen was a 4 mm diameter disk embedded in an 8 mm diameter Teflon rod and exposed to seawater. Duplicated coupons were placed in a standard test apparatus that was built according to the standard ASTM D 2688 – 94.The main results were: a) corrosion mechanism explained in terms of the counterparts partial processes which are the hydrogen evolution and oxygen reduction reaction; b) for the test specimen a corrosion band like feature that suggest a lateral dispersion of aggressive solutions from corrosion pits; c) a range of corrosion rates between 1 and 1.96 mm/year for flow rates between 0.2 and 3.0 m/s; and d) a convenient inhibitor dose between 20–25 mg/L for optimum inhibition efficiency to obtain a maximum value of 80% for corrosion efficiency."

"This paper presents an application of the use of synthetic ores to study gold recovery by gravity. Three case studies are presented: the first focuses on the use of tungsten to study applications of Knelson Concentrators for upgrading gravity concentrates; the second on tungsten again, in this case to study the performance of a 86 Falcon Concentrator; and the third on lead to mimic gold's grinding behaviour.It is shown that the use of synthetic ores with metallic substitute for gold is not only expedient, but it can also lead to an increased understanding of separation and grinding mechanisms, because of the more accurate results and controlled particle shapes. The case studies highlight the problems associated with gold particle flakiness and gangue density. The grinding behaviour of malleable materials is shown to be complex, as particles can migrate to coarser size classes by flattening and cold welding, and to finer size classes by folding and actual breakage.IntroductionThe title of this contribution is not entirely misleading. Magnesium has excellent bio-compatibility in terms of its density, strength, elastic modulus and toxicity. However, due to its poor corrosion performance, so far magnesium has not been successfully used in the human body as a permanent implant material. Nevertheless, there is a possibility to utilize the low corrosion resistance of magnesium to make magnesium into a temporary implant component that can gradually dissolve in the human body after surgical region heals. This will avoid the secondary operation to remove the temporarily implanted component and the chronic inflammatory discomfort caused by the implant. This paper is aimed at exploring the possibility of using magnesium as a degradable bio-material through investigating the corrosion behaviors of pure magnesium and surface treated magnesium in a simulated body fluid (SBF) solution. It was found that magnesium corroded rapidly in the SBF solution, resulting in vigorous hydrogen evolution and a strong alkalization effect. Hence, it is impractical to use magnesium as a permanent implanted material or even a degradable implant. However, a proper anodizing treatment can significantly improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium, and hence slower down the hydrogen evolution and alkalization processes, which will allow to control the corrosion or degradation of magnesium at a desired rate in the human body. With a controllable corrosion rate, it is believed that magnesium as a degradable implanted material will be eventually achievable.

Without conscious effort and understanding, a number of factors peculiar to mineral exploration campaigns conspire against building sustainability in host communities. These include the episodic and transitory presence of an exploration team in the community and the inherent uncertainty of outcomes; most projects fail. Given these circumstances, there is a strong tendency to apply a simple formula of providing employment, pragmatic philanthropy and supporting infrastructure improvements (roads, schools and clinics) to demonstrate that mining provides benefits. Experience in rural native communities of Mesoamerica has shown that it is possible to create positive, sustainable outcomes quite rapidly within communities, which build capacity, improve quality of life and support a strong social license to operate. Success comes from an understanding of community structure and dynamics; engaging with all segments of the community; creating healthy, transparent and accountable relationships based on clearly defined roles and responsibilities; and supporting and strengthening the role of women in a culturally appropriate way. To this are added innovative and culturally appropriate ways of incorporating sustainability through genuine social investment in areas more typically addressed by exploration companies; health, education, and environmental management.

An exploration program seeking kimberlite pipes, the common primary hosts for diamonds, Was' conducted during the years 1979 through 1982 in the James Bay Lowlands of Ontario by Selco Mining Corporation (now the Mining Division of BP Resources Canada) and Esso Minerals Canada. The area to be explored was selected on the basis of its regional geological setting, and because of the known presence of kimberlite indicator minerals in the region. The primary exploration technique was low level airborne magnetic surveying, followed by detailed ground geophysics. This work located many pipe-like bodies, with diameters of a few hundred metres, as well as several dykes. Targets located by these geophysical methods were drilled, intersecting a total of45 intrusions, consisting of34 alkaline diatremes containing tuffisitic breccias, 7 carbonatites, and 4 massive alnoites. K-Ar determinations indicated ages of 152 Ma and 180 Ma for two of the massive alnoites. The texture and general mineralogy of the tuffisitic breccias are similar to those of diatreme facies kimberlites, but detailed examination of their mineralogy and chemistry demonstrated that they lie within the alnoitic rather than the kimberlitic compositional field. Although the exploration program did not lead to the discovery of true kimberlites, it did demonstrate the presence of a large, previously unknown province of alkaline volcanic activity, which has no surface expression.

Introduction The discovery of artificial radioactivity, that is, of radioactivity of acorns other than those which are naturally radioactive, has increased vastly the possibility of using radioactivity as an analytical cool. The incomparable value of radioactive atoms, which are commonly termed tracers, arises from the extreme sensitivity of this analytical method. To get an idea of this extreme sensitivity it may be useful co recall that gravimetric analytical methods will not permit the weighing of anything much lighter than one-hundredth of a milligram of material. Under the most favourable circumstances, this represents an uncertainty in the answer of 1016 acorns, or 10,000,000,000,000,000 acorns. Accurate spectrographic methods possibly have a sensitivity 10,000 times greater than this, but the uncertainty is still of the order of 1012 atoms. The tracer permits ascertainment of decay of a single atom so that its sensitivity, without half trying, can be several orders of magnitude greater than that of any other method available co chemists. In addition co the sensitivity of tracers to which reference has just been made, tracers have another property which makes them unique. A radioactive atom is almost exactly like the corresponding non-radioactive acorn m regard to its electronic structure, and therefore in regard to its chemical properties. The nucleus is different, but the nucleus does not participate in chemical reactions. Therefore, a tracer acorn behaves like an ordinary atom until such time as its nucleus undergoes a catastrophic decay. This unique property permits one to use tracer acorns as atomic spies and therefore to follow the behaviour of acorns of a certain kind among their own kind. In other words, the tracer method permits us to study and measure what we call self-diffusion. All of the uses of tracers that have been made depend on the two properties co which reference has been made.

This paper describes a platform for autonomous operations in open pit mining environments. A typical operation consists of: (1) Initial locomotion toward a remote worksite; (2) Pattern navigation within the worksite; (3) Worksite manipulations and (4) Return locomotion to the start location. The platform includes precise localization module based upon the fusion of odometry, inertial and GPS measurements. The guidance module starts from a set of way points specified on a GPSreferenced map and plans and executes the mission. A typical mission includes specified manipulative tasks along the navigation path. During motion execution the on-board system continuously verifies that the path is free of obstacles and that the hardware is not overloaded. Momentary losses of external positioning measurements does not adversely affect the performance, owing to the redundancy in position and heading estimation. A rehearsal phase follows planning and allows the supervisor to examine the kinematic behavior of the platform during motion, thus reducing the need for continuous monitoring during execution and providing protection against potential losses of communication.

Higher employer costs and increased employee benefits will result from the current sweeping revisions of the un-employment insurance system now receiving consideration before Parliament. The new legislation, the Un-employment Insurance Act, 1971, will substantially increase the unemployment insurance costs of many employers through an increase in the level of employer contributions -generally, employer contributions will go to 1.4 times employee costs -as well as by extending coverage to many classes of employees now exempt. Under the new legislation, executives, technicians, teachers, institutional workers and others will be covered, and eligible for the higher benefits which it provides. For the first time, absence from work because of illness or accident may qualify individuals for unemployment insurance benefits.

In the present work, the effect of Ga on the wetting behavior of the Cu-rich braze filler CuGa10 (wt.%) on the steel 304L was investigated. For this, the macroscopic and microscopic effects governing the wetting of pure Ga, pure Cu and CuGa10 alloy (wt.%) on the austenitic steel were analyzed and compared. Contact angle and surface tension measurements were carried out by means of the sessile drop technique and, in addition, the phase formation at the interface was determined. Pure liquid Ga spreads on 304L, which supposedly is related to the formation of intermetallic Fe-Ga phases growing into the liquid Ga. Depending on the annealing time, FeGa3 and Fe14.5Ga12 were identified. In contrast, CuGa10 as well as pure Cu show secondary wetting on the steel surface. Especially, liquid Cu prefers to spread laterally and vertically along the grain boundaries of the steel substrate. In spite of rather similar mechanisms, CuGa10 wets 304L steel at lower rate than pure Cu above the liquidus temperature.

"In the summer of 1990, pilot scale testing of a Jameson cell was carried out at Falcon bridge Limited, Kidd Creek Division. The Jameson cell is self aspirating and has fewer mechanical parts, thus it has a lower operating cost compared to conventional cells. This lower operating cost combined with positive pilot scale results, justified the evaluation of two full scale cells in the plant. The plant test had two mandates:1. Gain a thorough understanding of the cells operation and design constraints.2. Develop a flow sheet to replace three divisions of copper cleaner flotation.This paper provides an overview on the installation, commissioning and evaluation of the two Jameson cells acquired. The current status of the test program is also discussed.IntroductionThe Falcon bridge Limited-Kidd Creek Division concentrator is located in Timmins, Ontario. The concentrator, commissioned in 1966 and expanded in 1978, consists of four parallel grinding and flotation divisions utilising small cell (60 ft3) technology. With increasing pressure to maintain low operating unit costs a series of studies were undertaken to assess the impact of new technologies in the flotation circuits. The goals of the project were to improve productivity through increased metallurgical performance and/or reduced operating costs.One of the technologies investigated was the Jameson cell designed by Dr. Graeme Jameson of the University of Newcastle and marketed by MIM Holdings Limited, Australia. This style of column technology was chosen based on its potential for reduced capital and operating cost versus large conventional cells.The success of pilot testwork in 1990 led to the installation of two production sized Jameson cells beginning in October 1991. The units were to be used to confirm pilot results and determine equipment requirements for flotation modernisation. This paper will discuss the results and experiences Kidd Creek has had with the Jameson cell from pilot scale through installation and commissioning of the plant units."

In 2004, Zinifex Budel Zink commenced testing with the objective to increase the precipitation of aluminium in the iron purification stage of its hydrometallurgical zinc circuit, without the use of expensive reagents. Findings from the literature applied to the leach circuit at Zinifex Budel Zink demonstrated that aluminium removal from the leach circuit could be increased by lowering the ferric concentration and acidity in the vessels where jarosite precipitation occurs. An associated increase in copper precipitation was mitigated by limiting the extent to which the ferric concentration was lowered in the vessels where jarosite forms and lowering the ratio of copper to aluminium in the solutions entering these vessels.

"As the demand of raw materials increases in a global scale due to demographic and economical changes, it is necessary to find technological solutions that improve current production processes in an efficient and sustainable manner. The main objective of this preliminary study is to evaluate the properties of foam produced with a cellulose-based molecule as an alterative to commercial frothing agents in flotation operations. There are two potential advantages identified with the use of cellulose-based additives for the proposed application: i) these chemicals can be produced from sustainable sources (i.e., non-edible crops), and ii) cellulose can be functionalized with chemical groups, in order to rationally modify its behaviour. In previous studies dealing with foam stabilization, it has been proposed that some functionalized cellulose species present a self-assembly mechanism at gas-liquid interfaces. Unlike typical surfactant-based frothers, cellulose molecules form networks around the bubbles that act as protective layers to the mechanical stress and to the occurrence of ionic species. This work studied the properties of foams produced in the presence of a partially hydroxylated cellulose molecule (i.e., hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose; HPMC) under various concentrations in a laboratory-scale column. A comparison with a commercial surfactant frother (i.e., Nasfroth 240) is presented, and a rationalization of the behaviour of HPMC in terms of foam properties (i.e., surface tension, bubble size, foam depth) is proposed. INTRODUCTIONThe search for green alternatives to chemicals produced from non-renewable sources has become a topic of major relevance in industry (Choi et al., 2015). As a chemical consuming industry, the mining sector faces now the challenge of adopting new processing technologies and strategies in order to achieve the future demands of sustainability. Evidently, a move towards green chemistry can only take place by identifying substitute molecules offering potential advantages in terms of recovery and grade."

"A technique for on-line simultaneous estimation of gas and solids holdup (volume fraction), based on a combination of conductivity and pressure difference measurements, is proposed and tested in a laboratory flotation column (10cm in diameter and 447cm in height). Fundamental concepts underlying this technique and the effect of relevant parameters are discussed. In the studied range, 3-30 %v/v gas holdup and 2-18 % v/v solids holdup, experimental results showed good agreement between the estimated and actual holdup values (as determined by an isolating technique). The relative accuracy of the solids holdup estimation increased when solids density or solids concentration increased. Frequent re-calibration of pressure transducers was found necessary for accurate phase holdup estimation.IntroductionGas holdup is a key parameter in controlling the performance of flotation columns. For example, flotation rate is affected by bubble size and gas rate both of which, in turn, affect gas holdup. Moreover, gas holdup also determines the slurry residence time which indicates a direct influence of gas holdup on recovery.Gas holdup determination has been the focus of many studies (e.g., Castillejos, 1986; Marchese et al., 1992). Some of the techniques which have been used are given in Table 1."

Possibility to move human workers away from dangerous places ?enhanced safety and improved working environment; ? Increase of actual operational time: ? Less losses due to shift changes, regulatory breaks, blasting periods, ventilation after blasting, etc.; ? Possibility to work in extremely dangerous conditions where man-operated machine could not be used (for example: ST-14 loader in backfilling operations in the Kemimine, following roof collapse). Reduction of the production cost through: ? Lower maintenance cost (less damage due to operator?s mistakes and no machine abuse); ? Higher productivity and effectiveness of the equipment (less machines to meet production targets, less operators required, lesser maintenance cost...). ? Although personnel health and safety are key drivers behind autonomous operation of mobile equipment in U/G mines, with significant capital and operation costs one expects to achieve: ? Productivity higher, or at least equal to that offered by man-operated equipment and systems; ? Lower production cost. Therefore, high effectiveness of the autonomous equipment is crucial to succeed.

The stability design of cemented backfills is normally conducted using conventional approaches. Analytical or numerical models, backed by trial-and-error methods, are the primary means used to describe or predict the support performance of backfills during mining. The stability of paste backfill free-standing faces is a major concern due to potential consequences to production, ore dilution and safety. Available analytical or mathematical models are developed based on assumptions of the failure modes that may occur when vertical fill faces are exposed during adjacent mining. Numerical modeling serves to provide an understanding of backfill strength and deformation behaviour. Such approaches offer inherent limitations and generally result in conservative designs. In this paper, centrifuge physical modeling was conducted not only for performance evaluation studies, including stability analysis, but to develop an understanding of the strength and deformation behaviour of paste backfill exposed faces when the adjacent ore zone is removed. The failure mode and mechanics of failure observed in the centrifuge model of a given prototype situation are discussed in detail. Centrifuge model results were compared to numerical modeling and it was concluded that a sliding block failure mechanism that resembles a circular slip appears to be the predominant failure mode.
