This paper describes the results of a laboratory study on the upgrading of Algoma siderite by the amine flotation of silica and silicate gangue. The experiments indicate that a virtually complete removal of silica is possible in a rougher flotation con-ducted in tap water at natural pH, without prior desliming of the ore. Grinding considerably finer than the apparent liberation size is essential for maximum silica rejection. A cationic collector, Aeromine 3037, gave best results when used in combination with a modifier. Of the several modifiers tested, a Dutch potato dextrin, Dextrin 4356, was found to be the most effective. Both iron recovery and the grade of the final iron product are enhanced by floating the pyrite contained in the ore prior to the amine flotation of the silica, and by scalping the magnetics from the silica concentrate. "This Precious metals content copper scrap is treated with a copper smelting process, and copper and precious metals are recovered. The precious metal lost in the slag is increasing with increasing of treated scrap amount. To determine the portion of the precious metals chemically dissolved and that associated with the mechanically trapped matte in the slag will be a key factor to improve the recovery of those metals. The distribution of precious metals between copper matte and FeOx-SiO2 slag phases is determined at 1300 oC and a fixed partial pressure of SO2 of 0.1 atm for the matte grades from 40 to 70 mass% of copper. The distribution ratios show a tendency to increase when the grade of matte is increased. In addition, the solubility of platinum and rhodium in the FeOx-SiO2-CaO slag under the air and the solubility of platinum in the FeOx-SiO2 slag equilibrated with a pure platinum or the Pt-Cu alloy were determined at 1300oC in the range of oxygen partial pressure from 10-9 to 10-7. The solubility of platinum and rhodium in the slag tends to increase with increasing content of copper in the slag and oxygen partial pressure. INTRODUCTIONThe stringency of the supply and demand of platinum group metal (PGM) intensifies by localization for resources and increase of the demand for PGM, furthermore, smelting and the recycling of PGM in the nonferrous smelting process take an important role. Scrap containing a precious metal for the purpose of collection of PGM is treated by copper smelting recently. With increase of the treatment amounts, loss of PGM in slags is the serious problem.In considering of PGM loss in slags, knowledge of the distribution behavior for PGM between slag and matte phases or slag and copper phases and the PGM solubility in slags is important. The distribution ratios of silver and gold between the FeOx-SiO2 slag and the Fe-Cu matte were reported by Roghani (Roghani et al., 2000), Shinha (Shinha et al., 1985) and Takeda (Takeda et al., 1993) However, there is no data for the PGM distribution ratio. On the other hand, the PGM solubility in slags was reported by Sano (Sano et al., 1997) However, there is very few report for the solubility of PGM in the nonferrous smelting slags."

Mercury balances have been obtained for the flotation circuits at Pamour Porcupine Mines, Timmins, Ontario, and at Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation, Bathurst, New Brunswick. The mineral form of mercury in both deposits has been ascertained. At Pamour Porcupine, the mercury is approximately evenly divided among sphalerite, native silverelectrum and tetrahedrite-tennantite; at Brunswick Mining, this element is contained mostly in the sphalerite, although tetrahedrite (and possibly pyrite) also contains minor quantities.

Introduction The present paper may be considered as a sequel to a paper, A Process for Cleaning Molybdenite .Concentrate, which was presented by the author at the annual meeting of the Institute last year. In that paper, a description was given of the laboratory work leading up to the adoption of a new process for treating complex molybdenite ores of the Molybdenite Corporation of Canada. A bare outline of mill performance with the new flow-sheet was included. With this writing, the purpose is to describe the highly interesting work of translating laboratory experience into mill practice, to show what changes were required in design to put the scheme on an operational basis, and to point out the gratifying improvements in mill products which resulted from the new procedure. The process has been placed in operation at the La Corne mine of the Molybdenite Corporation of Canada. This mine was operated during the war by Wartime Metals Corporation, and, earlier, by the Molybdenite Reduction Company, which installed a small plant. The property is situated on the highway from Amos to Val d'Or, Quebec. The claims held by the Company are at the boundary between La Corne and Vassan townships.

Introductory The Alberta Provincial Government has contemplated a revision of the Mines Act for some time past, and it is understood that a definite decision has now been made to do this at the next session of the Legislature. The Operators' and Miners' organizations of the Province have been asked, or at least have been given the opportunity, to submit their views and ideas relative to the proposed changes. The operators have already drafted out a number of changes which they feel would improve the Act from the standpoint of safety and practicability, and this paper has been prepared so that the general membership of the Rocky Mountain Branch of the Institute, which is composed largely of the operating and certificated officials of the mines, might have an opportunity to discuss, criticize, and improve upon the suggested changes which the operators are putting forward.

"Recent developments in metal-based additive manufacturing (AM) technology have generated considerable interest in multiple industries, owing to flexibility in design and the ability to produce final components in their net shape. The AM of high-strength aluminium alloys has not been widely explored, due to findings of undesirable microstructures leading to short fatigue life and poor fracture toughness; restricting the application of AM to lower strength aluminium alloys (with cast-like Al-alloy compositions) to date. Herein, aluminium alloy AA2024 (Al-3.6Cu-1.2Mg) was additively manufactured via selective laser melting (SLM), with the resultant microstructures and corrosion properties characterised and compared to wrought AA2024-T3. Microstructural characterisation was carried out using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), revealing SLM produced AA2024 included a population of ?-phase (Al2Cu) in preference to S-phase (Al2CuMg) typical of wrought AA2024. Additionally, the corrosion properties were investigated by potentiodynamic polarisation in a range of NaCl concentrations, whilst elemental corrosion rates were also determined (including for open circuit exposure conditions) and quantified in situ with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer coupled with an electrochemical flow cell. Results revealed a significant improvement in the corrosion resistance, and elemental dissolution of AM prepared 2024 relative to wrought AA2024-T3.INTRODUCTION Aluminium alloys remain the preferred candidate materials in applications requiring a balance of low density and strength. The ability to produce net shape components from aluminium alloys has accelerated due to recent developments in metal-based additive manufacturing (AM) technology, including selective laser melting (SLM) and powder bed 3D printing. The AM of Al-alloys, including Al-Si-Mg (namely AlSi10Mg), has become widespread commercially in recent years. Alloys including AlSi10Mg offer reliable and reproducible production by AM, however such alloys (and variants thereof) are not high strength alloys. The pursuit of higher strength AM Al-alloys presents significant merit to multiple industries; however, such higher strength AM Al-alloys have not been widely studied to date. The solidification of high strength Al-alloys during conventional (casting) operations needs to be executed in a manner that avoids so-called =hot-tearing‘, which can arise as a result of the solute type and loading. A report on the solidification of a high strength Al-alloy prepared by AM, along with factors related to solidification, was recently covered by Pollock and co-workers (Martin et al., 2017). It was reported that AM of high-strength aluminium alloys (which have to date been principally based on the compositions of wrought high strength Al-alloys) may lead to undesirable microstructures that reduce fatigue life and result in poor fracture toughness; presently limiting the application of AM to lower strength aluminium alloys (with cast-like Al-alloy compositions) to date."

Flotation, as with most engineering disciplines, involves testwork. Commonly this means going from lab scale to pilot scale to industrial scale. It is important to conduct tests to identify key parameters and to optimize even at the lab scale. To reduce the number of tests while maximizing the information, it is necessary to use Design of Experiment and Statistical Analysis. In this communication Fractional Factorial Design was used to identify the effect of 7 main factors on barite flotation recovery from jig gravity tailings at the Dorrin Kashan operation. The factors include: pH, collector and depressant dosage, impeller speed (RPM), pulp dilution, particle size and flotation time. By analysis of the output with Minitab software all factors were shown to have an effect. Among the factors, pH and flotation time have an interaction effect but the others have wise effect as an interaction effect and main effect. Finally, reliability tests at pH= 9, RPM= 1000, collector 1 000g/ton, depressant l 750g/ton, particle size 90 µm, flotation time 90 s, pulp dilution 23 % solids, the optimum level of each factor, were done. At the optimum level a barite concentrate with average specific gravity 4.308 g/cm3, average grade 93.72% and average recovery 90.04% was produced from the jig tail.

"Energy efficiency in mining and minerals processing has attracted considerable public and industry attention because of the significant quantities of energy consumption involved. In this context the question of what are worthwhile targets for energy efficiency improvements ought to be of the highest priority. It is however worth taking a step back to avoid falling in the trap of taking preconceived ideas that have been reiterated repeatedly before as gospel. The aim of this paper is to highlight areas where new or alternative approaches could potentially be the better way forward. Some may come as a surprise to conventional industry thinking. Ultimately any such solutions are attractive to practitioners not just in an environmental but also in an economic sense, and hence should be targeted through applied research and development efforts. This paper highlights key aspects of each group of opportunities and some of the individual approaches to provide an overview of the current status quo.MINING INDUSTRY POWER UTILISATION – WHERE IS THE BIGGEST BANG FOR THE BUCK?The question of where is the biggest bang for the buck when trying to determine worthwhile targets for energy efficiency improvements has not always been reported on broadly enough, typically because industry practitioners operate in specific areas of expertise and comfort zone. Looking beyond the familiar doesn’t always come easy. Any technology or methodology consideration to address energy efficiency needs to take into account the context of alternative opportunities of superior value or risks not achieving desired uptake. The following sub-chapters have been ordered by magnitude of improvement potential as best as is possible, starting with the biggest first, and the smallest last. Platinum Group Metals (PGMs), Pt, Pd, Rh, have been widely used as a three-way catalyst to clean discharged gas from automobiles and therefore a considerable amount of the spent catalysts is generated annually. This paper proposes a novel concentration technology of PGMs by utilizing the double-deck structure of PGM bearing alumina-ceria and cordierite phases. The applied technologies are a combination of heating-quenching, selective grinding and screening for separating alumina-ceria phase from cordierite. Temperature change as a function of quenching time and the thermal stresses applied to both phases were simulated and calculated by FEM, and it was clarified the mechanism of micro-cracks generation at the phase boundary and micro-cracks in alumina-ceria phase, which indicated that separation of alumina-ceria phase from cordierite and selective breakage of alumina-ceria phase could be achieved in the subsequent selective grinding with an attritor. This process could concentrate 46 wt% of alumina-ceria phase into fine fractions with 86 % recovery efficiency. The remaining alumina-ceria phase can be further recovered by applying flotation and so on.

During this period, the search for .and development of iron ore deposits in Canada bas proven eminently successful and there is every indication that exploration will continue to be active for many years.This paper has been prepared primarily for the information of those who have bad little or no experience in iron ore exploration. For convenience, it is divided into three parts: ( 1) a brief discussion of the marketing of iron ores, with special reference to Canadian production; (2) a summary of the main features to be considered when prospecting for or evaluating a potential iron ore deposit; and (3) an outline of the methods and procedures used in the search for the direct-shipping iron ores in the Quebec•-Labrador iron ore field.The Iron Ore MarketDue to the tremendous tonnages of high-grade direct-shipping iron ore indicated in the iron ore fields of the Quebec-Labrador and Steep •Rock areas, it might be assumed that there would have been a sharp decline in iron ore prospecting in this country. On the contrary, the development of these two major fields, which must be classed among the world's greatest, has been responsible for much of the current activity. The search for high and medium grade magnetite deposits is being• conducted in many parts of the country and a number of these have reached the development stage. "Fourteen companies (Appendix) representing senior mining organizations in Canada were canvassed in order to assess: (1) the current usage and trends, and (2) the usefulness of computer applications in ore reserve estimation and grade control. The results of the questionnaire suggest that:• computers are unsurprisingly, predominant in the mining industry for calculating reserves and performing grade control;• time and cost savings are realized;• computer-based approaches are applicable to underground situations;• geological information is incorporated to the computerization process; and• computer usage does not hinder the collaboration of geologist and mining engineer.A clear need is identified for case histories comparing computer-calculated ore reserves and actual production data.IntroductionAmong the management and technical staff of some mining companies there is a perception that the application of computer based technology for the estimation of ore reserves and grade control, has as many drawbacks as benefits. Some of the objections raised against the utilization of computers for ore reserve estimation are that:• computer-based reserve models work for large open pit mines but not for underground situations;• computer-generated reserves ignore the geologist's knowledge base; they are strictly a number crunching exercise; and• the use of computers for ore reserves hinders collaboration between the geologist and mining engineer.In order to determine (I) the extent of current computer usage and future trends and (2) whether the objections noted above are borne out by experience, a number of senior Canadian mining companies were canvassed.The respondents were asked to provide:• an assessment of the importance of the computer in the ore reserve estimation and grade control process;• the level of involvement of individuals and staff groups with computer-based ore reserve estimation;• the advantages perceived and realized from the utilization of computer-based ore reserve approaches;• the current and future human resources requirements for the evaluation, implementation, maintenance and development of computer-based ore reserve systems;• the hardware and software resources presently used and planned; and• the developments needed to increase the use and acceptance of computer-based ore reserves."

"Following the depletion of nickel sulfide ores, laterites are considered as one of the main sources for producing nickel and cobalt. One of the primary steps in pyrometallurgical extraction of nickel from laterites involves partial reduction of the ore at temperatures below 1000°C. Studying the kinetics of laterite reduction provides valuable information on reducibility of nickel laterites using coal as a reductant. The present study investigates the reduction behavior of a nickel laterite by thermal gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Non-isothermal reduction tests and X-ray diffraction analysis were performed to find the main reactions that occur during the process. The kinetic parameters were calculated by Coats-Redfern method. The general model of simple reaction f(a)=(1-a)n was used for calculating kinetic parameters.INTRODUCTION Nickel (Ni) naturally occurs in the form of sulfide and laterite ores. Laterite ores are mainly available in tropical regions. Weathering phenomena during millions of years has led to the formation of several layers with specific mineralogy (Butt & Cluzel, 2013). The three main layers downward are limonite, smectite, and saprolite (Crundwell et al., 2011). Although laterites are the most available nickel ore resource (70%), their share in the overall Ni production is limited to 40% (Crundwell et al., 2011). The main reasons for not materializing the full potential of laterites are as follows (Ray et al., 1985): •,Laterite ores contain high water content (free and combined) which in turn results in high energy consumption of the extraction process. •,As Ni is present in the form of solid solution in laterites, physical upgrading methods such as flotation are not effective in increasing the Ni content before the extraction process. •,Extracting Ni from sulfide ores involve exothermic reactions which are beneficial due to decreasing the overall energy requirement of the process, however there is not efficient release of energy in the process of extracting Ni from laterite ores."

"An experimental study of chemically enhanced filtration and dewatering of fine coal slurry with and without additives was carried out. The experiment involved determination of effect of slurry concentration, additives (cationic, anionic and nonionic), filter area, filtration velocity, particle size and cake resistance on dewatering and filtration using vacuum filtration cell. Finally, the rate of filtration and dewatering and optimum amount of additives used were determined under suitable filtration condition. Overall, it was found that the filtration and dewatering characteristics were enhanced by increased slurry concentration, larger filter area and larger particle size. In addition of additives, the kerosene was found to be best for enhancing the filtration which yielded cake moisture reductions of approximately 17% by weight. At optimum dosages, the final cake moisture contents were reduced by 3.6% and 5.8% by weight using the appropriate surfactant and flocculent, respectively.INTRODUCTIONFor India, it is estimated that coal constitute a principal source of energy for the next several decades. It is majorly used at thermal power plants to generate electricity and also to a great extent in steel and cement industry. It has been observed that its consumption is increasing so as to meet the energy requirements of the country. It has been found that in a coal preparation plant; approximately 20-25 percent coal is of the mined coal of the range below minus 0.5 mm (28 meshes). Generally, this fine fraction is discarded due to its high cost of processing and further utilisatisation is very minimal. But with ongoing research and development for advanced clean coal technology, various new techniques have been evolved to maximize the utilization of available coal. In recent time technologies such as column flotation, cleaning of fine size coal to lower the ash content and low pyretic sulfur is feasible at high recovery value. But in various researches it is found that one of the biggest hurdles in utilization of fine coal cleaning technology by the coal industry is the economic dewatering of the fine clean coal product. Thus, until an economical and practical solution to dewatering of fine clean coal is achieved, the efforts devoted to developing fine clean coal technology will be wasted. In this paper an effort toward enhancing and developing the optimum technique of dewatering and filtration of fine coal slurry has been made."

Dump trucks are the main mean for hauling earth material within and outside of the construction and open-pit mining jobsites. The real-time monitoring of the material transportation trips is beneficial for proactive equipment management, volume estimation, and productivity measurement. The traditional manual observation is tedious, non-real-time, and expensive; therefore remote sensing technologies, namely GPS and RFID, have been employed for this reason. Ordinary construction videos are another costeffective alternative to monitor dirt loading and hauling operations in real-time. A vision-based system has been developed to recognize and count hauling trips. This system has three modules including object detection, tracking, and action recognition. This system processes videos taken from access roads in which it recognizes dump trucks and then tracks them throughout the viewfinder. The action recognition module is designed to reject false alarms and also terminate tracking. This way, the system is able to count the number of hauling trips and also record the time between each trip. Several state of the art computer vision algorithms were employed to develop this system. Some of these algorithms were modified using spatiotemporal information to minimize the inherent errors of the vision-based methods. The experimental results showed considerable performance of the system for practical application in the construction and mining sectors.

"The Western Research Centre (WRC) of CANMET located in Devon, Alberta, is a modern research facility offering services ranging from fundamental research to pilot plant investigations. Recently, a 0. 76 metre diameter by 7.9 metre high Flotaire column flotation cell was installed as a demonstration unit for Canadian coal producers. Because the column cell is intended to be used for research, development and demonstration, WRC recognized that additional sensing equipment and improved process control would be required to generate good data for subsequent column scale-up and engineering design.A low cost, personal computer based control system was, therefore, designed and installed. This paper describes the stepwise procedure in developing the control strategies, selection of system software and hardware, and installation and configuration of the system.Preliminary performance data on a western Canadian coal sample are also presented. Future testwork is planned on additional coal samples to expand upon existing database."

"A study of the physical properties of long grades of asbestos fibers imported into the United States during the past eight years has disclosed information that will contribute materially to effective selection and use of fibers for electrical products. The study embraced fiber lengths, volume resistivity under three different conditions, total iron by chemical analysis, magnetic rating, conductivity of an aqueous ex-tract and its sodium chloride equivalent.The fibers examined included chrysotiles from Rhodesia, British Columbia, and Barberton area; marlime from Bechuanaland and Province of Quebec; amosite and crocidolites from Africa and Australia; and anthophyllites from Mozambique and from Georgia in the United States. Volume resistivity values provide a relative basis for estimating the electrical performance of end products; magnetic rating -an estimate of the quantity of iron compounds present in excess of those in the asbestos structure; conductivity of an aqueous extract; and an estimate of the ionizable impurities in fibers.Tests of these factors yield in-formation, not heretofore generally known, which may serve as a guide in the evaluation of asbestos fibers for electrical products."

"In carrying out a geotechnical survey of a proposed gas pipeline route from the Arctic Islands south to Longlac, Ontario, the Polar Gas Consortium contracted the drilling of several hundred 2- to 2D-m-deep boreholes in drift and bedrock. Samples from these holes were made available to the Geological Survey of Canada, where they were subjected to stratigraphic and trace-element geochemical analyses. The geochemical characteristics of the clay and sand-sized heavy mineral fractions of till samples from these boreholes have been summarized in a series of geochemical profiles.From the proposed pipeline terminus at Longlac northward to the vicinity of God's River in Manitoba, tills contain significant amounts of Paleozoic carbonate rocks and Proterozoic sedimentary rocks derived from the Hudson Bay basin and lowlands. Within this section, two sites were enriched in base metals, indicating the possibility of local mineralization of possible economic interest.From God's River northward to Seal River, Manitoba, no evidence of local mineralization was noted. The heavy mineral fractions of the tills are universally enriched in Mn-rich siderite thought to originate on or in the Paleozoic section of the Hudson Bay lowlands.From Seal River northward to Thelon River, near Baker Lake, tills contain only components originating west of the Hudson Bay sedimentary basin. Near the Keewatin-Manitoba border, all till is enriched in uranium, which probably originates in the ""young"" porphyritic granites underlying much of the region, and produces a distinctive airborne radiometric anomaly.At the Thelon River, multiple till sections are variously enriched in Cr, Ni, U, Cu and Mo in the vicinity of a distinctive aeromagnetic anomaly.From Thelon River northward, several coincident zones of chromium and uranium enrichment are found where the line of boreholes crosses east-west-striking belts of volcanic, ultramafic and sedimentary rocks of the Prince Albert Group.The results of this study indicate that till tends to have characteristic element associations or concentrations over each of several broad regions along the pipeline route. These are related both to large-scale bedrock associations and to largescale effects of glacial dispersal. In addition, the samples, collected more or less at random with respect to local bedrock geology, have intersected several small-scale geochemical anomalies that appear to be related to zones of mineralization of possible economic interest."

REACH was proposed by the EU Commission in October 2003 and stands for the Registration Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. It requires that all substances identified as persistent, bio-accumulative and toxic, whether the risk of those chemicals being released is real or perceived, require registration prior to them being allowed to be imported into the European Union. An internal investigation by the metals industry indicates that almost all primary raw materials streams would be classified as hazardous due to the potential health or environmental hazard properties of one or more of their ingredients. REACH uses a wide definition for chemicals and metals and as such its implications greatly impact the entire supply chain of the metals industry. The process of registration would require the producer/ importer to produce a dossier. Initiatives along the same lines as the EU REACH are also coming up in other parts of the world. REACH requires registration of at least four substances manufactured by the aluminium industry: aluminium metal, including powder, aluminium oxide, and aluminium hydroxide. The proposed legislation permits the affected companies to band together to form a consortium to develop certain aspects of the registration application. The aluminium industry has established a consortium and testing is currently underway.

ABSTRACT: The Victor diamond mine is located in the James Bay lowlands, 90 km west of the First Nations village of Attawapiskat. The project was the first of its kind in northern Ontario. The process plant was designed to produce a 95 to 98% by weight diamond concentrate through three stages of comminution, dense medium separation, and proprietary X-ray technology for final recovery. The plant was commissioned over a period of six months, commencing prior to substantial completion of construction. Through effective planning of the commissioning phase, the Victor mine start-up was safely completed nine months ahead of schedule.

Newmont Ghana Gold Limited's Ahafo Operation has matured from its project ramp up stage into steady state operations after three years of operation. Management focus has shifted from addressing construction and commissioning problems to optimization and improvement. This focus change has coincided with the introduction by Newmont of a Continuous Improvement (CI) program across the company which provided a project management methodology that can be used in the execution of smaller scale projects. This paper focuses on the application of CI principles at the Ahafo Plant through the discussion of several case studies that demonstrate how these principles are applied.
