Ammonium carbamate has been used as a reagent for the leaching of copper from the copper oxide ore found in the Honghe state, Yunnan province, China. In order to find the optimal conditions for the leaching of copper from this copper oxide ore,the effects of several processing parameters, including the concentration, time, temperature, particle size and stirring intensity have been investigated. The results of these optimization experiments showed that the leaching rate of copper reached up to 72.76% under the following conditions: liquid-to-solid ratio of 10:1, ammonium carbamate concentration of 2.5mol/L, leaching temperature of 45 °C, stirring speed of 300rpm, a reaction time of 1.5 h and 85% by weight thereof passes through a sieve having 0.074 mm.

The methyl substituted binuclear cyclometallated gold(I) complexes [Au2(?-n-MeC6H3PPh2)2] [n = 4, 5 and 6] all undergo oxidative addition reactions with halogens and, in the case of the 4- and 5-methyl substituted analogues, with dibenzoyl peroxide to give metal-metal bonded digold(II) complexes [Au2X2(?-C6H3-n-MePPh2)2]. The 4- and 5-methyl substituted digold(II) compounds on warming or exposure to light undergo carbon-carbon coupling reactions to give gold(I) complexes containing the corresponding 2,2'-n,n'-biphenylyldiphenylphosphines. The 6- methyl substituted digold(II) complexes rapidly isomerise above ca. -20° C to binuclear heterovalent gold(I)/gold(III) compounds [XAu(?-2-Ph2PC6H3-6-Me)AuX{?2-(6-MeC6H3-2-PPh2)}], containing a fourmembered cyclometallated ring on a gold(III) centre. Surprisingly, no carbon-carbon coupling could be induced for any of the 6-methyl substituted compounds, even under forcing conditions. This difference in reactivity of the 6- methyl derivative, compared to that of the 5-methyl and unsubstituted analogues was studied by ab initio calculations using a series of model compounds. The results are in excellent agreement with the experimental findings and suggest that the key-step in the C-C coupling reaction is the partial opening of the Au(III)-P bond in one of the transition states. In the 6-methyl system this transition state is energetically inaccessible and hence no C-C coupling occurs.

Introduction The Helen mine and the Victoria mine of Algoma Ore Properties, Limited, in the Michipicoten district, Ontario, are 120 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie, on the north shore of lake Superior. They are on the Algoma Central railway between Hawk Junction and Michipicoten Harbour. Between them, these mines have produced 10,757,113 tons of iron ore. From 1900 to 1918, 2,823,369 gross tons of brown ore was shipped, and from 1939 to the end of 1949, 7,933,744 tons of siderite was produced from the open-pit operations and underground development. The finished product, known as 'Algoma sinter', is shipped to blast furnaces both in Canada and the United States. The iron-ore bodies are a part of a tabular shaped area of iron formation that extends over a length of more than 10,000 feet and has maximum width of 1,000 feet. The two siderite orebodies, known as the Helen and Victoria, are separated by two diabase dykes. The Helen orebody is 1,600 feet long with a maximum width of 250 feet and the Victoria is 1,200 feet long with a width comparable to the Helen. These orebodies are considered to be a replacement of the original rock by iron carbonate. The introduction of the iron-1bearing material probably occurred after the development of the major folded structures. The open-pit mining of siderite started in the Helen ore body in 1939 and continued until 1945. During this period, 3,853,395 tons of ore was mined. Open-pit mining started in the Victoria body in 1946 and is still being carried on. Underground development commenced in September, 1947. Diamond drilling and surface sampling had shown the Helen deposit to average 35.61 per cent Fe and 7.28 per cent SiO2, and the Vi.otoria deposit 33.73 per cent Fe and 10347 per cent SiO2?

Effective blast fragmentation is essential in underground mining, as it directly influences downstream processing efficiency and operational expenses. This study investigates the application of Non-Newtonian Fluids (NNF) as stemming materials, presenting a novel method to enhance energy confinement, minimize environmental impact, and optimize blast performance. NNFs exhibit shear-thickening behaviour, enabling them to transition between fluid-like and solid-like states under stress, which renders them suitable for regulating explosive gas ejection during blasting. Field trials were performed by Vale Base Metals in Thompson, Manitoba, in their underground nickel mine to evaluate conventional slag stemming against NNF-based stemming in production-scale blasts. Emulsion explosives were employed, and blast performance was assessed through velocity of detonation (VOD) measurements, vibration monitoring, and AI-assisted fragmentation analysis using WipFrag. Preliminary results indicate that NNF stemming improves fragmentation, resulting in a reduction of D50 by as much as 38%, enhances energy confinement, and may decrease the incidence of hole plugging and re-drilling in subsequent blasts. This study presents an alternative to conventional stemming methods, highlighting potential advantages for enhanced safety, efficiency, and sustainability in blasting operations. Additional research and field trials are necessary to improve implementation protocols and facilitate the widespread adoption of this unique method in the mining sector.

Introduction An apparatus that will measure the surface area of a few of the simple minerals with a high degree of accuracy has been described by J. W. Bell (1). His apparatus consisted essentially of a photometric device that would measure the turbidity of fine particle suspensions. Turbidity, in this case, was considered as a function of surface area. Bell's method of surface area determination seemed to offer possibilities of extension and improvement to the point where it might approach a general method of particle size measurement. Theoretical and Practical Considerations of the Photometric Method In order to illustrate how turbidity may be considered as a function of average particle size, and to indicate the type of results expected from a photometric method of particle size measurement involving turbidity, the following theory may be hypothecated. If a number of particles, considered as spheres of uniform diameter, are placed at random in the path of a beam of light, the following expression, which will give the change in light intensity as a function of the diameter of the particles, the specific gravity of the material, and the weight involved, can be formulated from the Beer-Lambert Law:

"An evaluation of mineralization in the Goosly- Owen Lake area of central British Columbia is the result of a comprehensive geochemical study of rock samples obtained from a regional geological survey. The dispersion of metals in country rocks about a line of Tertiary intrusions suggests that these igneous bodies may be genetically related to known sulphide replacements, disseminations and vein deposits. The geochemical investigation is based on the determination of 12 elements from samples gathered from more than 800 scattered field stations. To assist processing and interpretation, the data are subjected to a variety of statistical procedures, including correlation of the elements, factor analysis, clustm• analysis and computer contouring of the elements. Some practical applications of rock geochemistry in regional exploration are indicated."

"THE Wabana iron ore mines, owned and operated by the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, Limited, .are on Bell Island in Conception bay, on the east coast of Newfoundland. Mining began on surface in 1895 and, although open-pit work is still done on a small scale, the entire output may be considered to•be derived from extensive submarine workings. In 1958 the average daily production of hematite ore was close to 12,000 tons, almost all of which was concentrated in a heavy-media plant. SUMMARYThe character, occurrence, and extent of the submarine bedded deposits enabled early operators to meet prevailing market demands with the minimum attention paid to exploration. Mechanization of the mine and the pressure for sustained high tonnages since 1955 have emphasized the importance of an expanded exploration and development programme.A serious handicap has been the impossibility of utilizing normal diamond drilling methods to explore ore conditions in advance of mining faces. Drilling between tl1e bedded zones has been done but the major difficulty has been to delineate ore reserves in the lower bed, which has the greatest ore potential of the three mineable seams."

Anglo American Corporation and the University of British Columbia have developed a medium-temperature oxygen pressure leaching process for the extraction of copper from chalcopyrite concentrates in an acid-sulphate system (AAC/UBC process). Leaching is performed at 150°C and surfactants are added to disperse molten elemental sulphur from the unreacted sulphide surface to prevent liquid sulphur occlusion. Copper extractions of over 95% and elemental sulphur yields of around 60% were observed over a 2-hour average residence time in a continuous pilot autoclave. Sporadic blockages occurring under continuous conditions were found to be caused by the accumulation of molten elemental sulphur mixed with unreacted sulphide mineral. A batch programme of experimentation was undertaken to establish the reason for this phenomenon. Batch experiments were conducted at low pulp densities on concentrate samples with narrow size distributions and at similar solution compositions to those experienced in the pilot autoclave. The overall rate of chalcopyrite oxidation was shown, under approximately constant solution composition, to be a strong function of the total available mineral surface area. Initial copper extraction rates followed the shrinking particle kinetic model under intrinsic surface control. Deviation from shrinking particle kinetics was however observed after a certain oxidation time. Secondary electron images identified small (typically less than 20 µm) sulphur conglomerates at the point of deviation, which 'collected' unreacted chalcopyrite mineral particles and lowered the total mineral surface area available for oxidation. These sulphur clusters are thought to be the precursor for blockages experienced in the continuous pilot autoclave. These results emphasised the importance of fine grinding (P80 5-20 µm) and suggest that shorter residence times may minimise the formation of sulphur conglomerates in a continuous autoclave operating at medium temperature.

"For general stability analysis of rock slopes, rock mass strength and rock mass disturbance are definitely should be considered. In addition, the impact of earthquakes must be taken into account. In fact, the rock mass strength is very difficult to be assessed which causes the difficulty of analysing rock slope stability. Therefore, an empirical failure criterion, the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, has been proposed. It is one of the most widely accepted approaches to estimate rock mass strength. The rock mass disturbance is important and was found having significant influence on evaluating rock slope stability, especially for rock slope with poor quality rock mass. In the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, the disturbance factor can represent the level of the rock mass disturbance which would provide a reasonable basis for estimating rock mass strength.This research will not only discuss the slope factor of safety, but also consider the influence of the seismic force on rock slope stability assessment using pseudo-static method. In practice, only horizontal seismic coefficient is used. Various magnitudes of the disturbance factor and recommended blasting damage zone thickness are also taken into account. The blasting damage zone thickness considered ranges from 0.5 to 2.5 times of slope height. The research results have potential to be extended and then sets of comprehensive stability charts can be provided for the rock slope stability evaluations. They will be convenient tools for practising engineers. In this study, finite element upper bound and lower bound limit analysis methods are employed. Their applicability has been investigated in some previous studies. The differences between upper bound and lower bound solutions are less than ±10% which would provide reasonable and acceptable range for rock slope stability safety factor estimation."

"The neutralization process of SO2 from coal burning plants is a well-defined technology using limestone to form CaSO4 according to the following reaction: CaCO3 + SO2(g) + 1/2O2(g) = CaSO4 This paper presents the results of a study carried out to validate the option of capturing SO2 using gases from a non-ferrous smelter; SO2 content was up to 12% using a three-stage fluidized bed reactor. The difference in SO2 content affects equilibrium conditions and kinetics, rendering a direct extrapolation of the high efficiency achieved for low SO2 content impossible. The R&D program consisted of a laboratory study using a semi-pilot operation of a one-stage fluidized bed reactor and the construction and operation of a three-step reactor prototype. Results show that the reaction proceeds according to the unreacted core model that imposes a compromise between CaCO3 conversion and SO2 capture. For high SO2 capture, the calcine from the reactor contained CaSO4 and CaO. A complete capture of SO2 from gases with 8 vol.% can be achieved with a mean reaction time of two hours at 800°C."

"Over the past five years, contributions from geologists and mining engineers were instrumental in the successful development of MEPS. It is a system of FORTRAN programs specifically designed to be used by mining personnel to solve geological and mining problems. MEPS is a flexible keyword-driven system. Extensive error editing procedures significantly reduce the time required to proceed from problem recognition to solution. Possibly the most attractive feature of MEPS is that computer solutions may be guided or selectively modified to obtain desired solutions. Some highlights of MEPS are:1. Vocabulary that is familiar to mining people.2. Geological data storage and retrieval.3. Statistical analysis and variograms.4. Contour maps of assays and geological horizons.5. "Testwork was conducted in order to compare the effectiveness of carbon based catalysts while oxidizing a gold-bearing pyrite concentrate under atmospheric conditions. Without the use of a catalyst the oxidation of pyrite was incomplete after 96 hours, resulting in roughly 60% pyrite oxidation. Furthermore the resulting sulphate yield from unassisted pyrite oxidation ranged between 72 and 84%. It is evident that atmospheric oxidation of pyrite is not viable due to slow oxidation kinetics and high sulphuric acid production when using a ferric sulphate media without a catalyst. The effect of two different carbon based catalysts, one Lewatit® AF 5 a new microporous carbonaceous bead, and the second a granular coconut shell based activated carbon, were tested under the same oxidation conditions as the unassisted pyrite tests. After 96 hours, Lewatit® AF 5 assisted oxidation showed approximately 96% pyrite oxidation with a sulphate yield ranging between 26 and 35%, while the activated carbon assisted oxidation reached approximately 100% pyrite oxidation with a sulphate yield between 36 and 37%. Testwork indicated that not only does the addition of a carbon based catalyst greatly improve the oxidation kinetics and lead to almost complete oxidation, the sulphate yield is also drastically reduced, resulting in very high elemental sulphur yields.INTRODUCTION Pyrite is an important sulphide mineral due to its ability to contain invisible gold concentrations up to 132 g/t (Chryssoulis & Cabri, 1990). As a result, ores composed of only a small amount of pyrite still have the ability to contain high gold grades. This refractory gold cannot be accessed via conventional gold leaching processes, such as cyanidation, and additional oxidative pre-treatment is required to liberate the gold, making it more amenable to extraction (Marsden & House, 2006). Current oxidative pre-treatments do exist consisting of both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes including high temperature and high pressure leaching within autoclaves, biological atmospheric leaching and roasting. Autoclaves are a proven process reaching desirable recoveries within approximately a 1–2 hour retention time, due to the increased temperatures and pressures, allowing for an increase in dissolved oxygen (Marsden & House, 2006). The typical reaction for pyrite oxidation within autoclaves is presented in Equations 1, 2 and 3."

"Pure cadmium sulphide was leached by the action of the bacterium Thiobacillus thiooxidans in the presence of finely divided sulphur. The influence of time, temperature, pH and concentration of inoculum on the extent of the cadmium extraction was studied. Under optimum conditions, up to 72 per cent of the cadmium could be dissolved over a six-week period. A cursory study of the role played by elemental sulphur seems to indicate that its presence is essential but that the sul1>huric acid produced through its oxidation is a minor factor in the cadmium extraction."

World wide applications for nickel use will be summarized and examples of those uses given. Nickel products are critical to many important aspects of modern society. These products are just as important for modern China as they are in other parts of the world. It is argued that future pattern of nickel use in China should be expected to be very similar to that in the rest of the developed world. Total use of nickel in products in China is already very large. In 2004, it was the largest market for stainless steel (nickel containing) in the world. A survey of Chinese stainless steel applications will be presented. Current high nickel prices have revived speculation about substitution, particularly for nickel containing stainless steels. The presentation will discuss some of the complicating factors that need to be taken into account when considering substitution. These factors are as valid in modern China as they are in other developed economies. Recent substitution efforts and the reaction to them will be examined. The Nickel Institute position regarding appropriate application of the various grades of stainless steel will be discussed. Price-motivated substitution in China, and elsewhere, will occur but it is argued that the extent will probably be limited.

"Reconnaissance geochemical mapping, based on the chemical analysis of waters, stream, and / or lake sediments had its origin in geochemical prospecting surveys carried out in New Brunswick during the 1950s. More recently, reconnaissance geochemical surveys carried out by government agencies for mineral resource appraisal purposes have been seen as a special case of regional geochemical mapping which is carried out with the aim of describing geochemical patterns f or elements which may he interpreted for mineral resource appraisal, environmental or geological purposes. The interpretation of pal/ ems on regional geochemical maps is based on the concepts of landscape geochemistry, in this paper, the regional approach 10 geochemical mapping is described with reference to an experimental regional geochemical survey which was completed in southwest Ontario during 1981-82. II is concluded, on the basis of data pal/ems for one element only (i.e. arsenic), that the new approach has much potential for solving modern problems in geoscience.""If things don 'I alter they will stay as they are... The deposition of octadecylamine (ODA) at the KCI crystal/NaCI-KCI brine interface was investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM images of freshly cleaved KCI specimens immersed in KCI-NaCI saturated brine at room temperature reveal disappearance with time of the atomic steps and formation of cubic NaC1 crystals. These crystals were found to form when the specimen was withdrawn from the saturated solution. Depending on the way of contacting the specimens with the octadecylamine dispersion, the AFM images show huge differences in the deposition patterns of ODA on KCI crystals. Adequate dispersion was found to help the formation of quite even ODA coverage. The coverage was several monolayers thicker when air/brine/solid contact took place, suggesting that in the potash flotation the collector is likely to be carried to the solid surfaces by air bubbles. The presence of methyl-isobutyl carbinol (M IBC) enhanced the dispersion of ODA in brine, thus helping the spreading of the surfactant on the KCI crystal surface.

THE Dolly Varden Mine is situated in the Kitsault River valley, eighteen miles from the head of Alice arm, in the Nass River mining division of British Columbia. During the years 1919-21 it was operated by the Taylor Engineering Company, Limited, and produced 1,300,000 oz. silver from about 36,000 tons of ore. The ore was transported by narrow-gauge railway to Alice arm, and shipped to the smelter at Anyox for treatment. During recent years, a small quantity of high-grade ore has been extracted by leasers and shipped to the smelter at Tacoma, Wash. Unfortunately, the bonanza ores which occurred near the surface did nor persist to depth, and two hundred feet below the exposures only rare and unimportant patches of ridi ore have been found. Two opinions exist as to the origin of this rich silver ore. One, advanced by V. Delmage (1, 2), is that the ores are hypogene, and the other, by G. Hanson(3, 4, S), is that the ores are the result of supergene enrichment. It is true that Dolmage first advanced his view that the ores are primary because they appeared to be analagous to Premier ore, which he had studied in detail and which he considered to be primary. The present authors have had access to excellent suites of material from both mines and consider the comparison well taken, the only essential mineralogical difference being the presence at the Premier mine, in addition to the silver minerals, of gold and electrum. Although the arguments put forward by Delmage have, in the opinion of the authors, never been refuted, nevertheless R. P. D. Graham(6), in a reference to the mine published in 1924, describes the ore as of supergene origin, and since then nobody appears to have challenged this statement. Indeed, in 1935, Hanson re-affirmed his earlier conclusion(5).

On this occasion, however, the President of The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, our good friend Dr. H. J. Fraser, has been our host at the enjoyable reception preceding this Institute Luncheon, which luncheon was sponsored by our official host, The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, one of our .constituent bodies.

During recent studies concerning the effects that various surface treatments, surface imperfections, locked-in residual stresses and metallurgical and geometrical notches have upon the mechanical behaviour of metals and, in particular, upon their tension-bending characteristics under impact loads, it became apparent that specially developed methods and samples would be of great assistance in determining the desired data. This paper describes and discusses a number of different types of double-notched tension-bending impact samples which have been considered and examined for this purpose. The types most suitable for exploratory investigations are proposed for application in the study of the _behaviour of metals, their welds, and, in particular, their surfaces, when subjected to various notch-severities, surface imperfections, strain rates, temperatures, and constrained states of stress (i.e. the relations of the three principal stresses). It is expected that the proposed double-notched tension-bending samples and the proposed test methods will also contribute toward further understanding of the cold brittle behaviour and the notch-sensitivities of metals. The possibilities of introducing the so-called impact notch-sensitivity index and relative impact notch sensitivity of metals are discussed. Data obtained on double-

The "V" system was first introduced by the West Virginia Coal & Coke Company at their No. 9 mine, Norton. Norton is a small mining village on the B. & 0. railway, about seven miles from the town of Elkins. This year, accompanied by G. D. MacDougall, I visited this mine to obtain first-hand information regarding this modem system and to determine its adaptability to conditions in Nova Scotia. The following is a brief account of my observations. The seam that is being worked is known as the Lower Kittaning, which, at this point, has an average thickness of 7 feet. This includes a band of hard clay varying in thickness from 8 to 14 inches, which occurs about 2 feet from the pavement, also 8 inches of inferior coal at the roof. The latter is not recovered, which leaves to be mined about 5 1/2 feet of clean coal. The roof is slate and shale for the first 30 feet, followed by 40 to 60 feet of sandstone; the total cover is from 80 to 250 feet thick. The seam lies very flat, with a dip of only 2 per cent., and, as the dip is toward the main entrance, it' is in favor of the load, also providing natural drainage for any water the mine makes. As the mine is not gassy, and there is no water to be pumped out, one can understand that mining conditions are practically ideal.
