The paper provides the most recent information on the construction of the AP60 phase 1 plant of Jonquiere which is due to be commissioned and started up in the first quarter of 2013. HSE management on site by RTA, and cooperation with local equipment manufacturers and contractors of the Saguenay-Lac Saint Jean region are highlighted in this section. The AP60 phase 1 Jonquiere plant aims to demonstrate of the AP60 technology at an industrial scale and allows the further developments of the AP60 cell. The advantages of the AP60 cell technology in terms of productivity, power consumption and environmental footprint are also briefly presented in the paper.

The amount of impurities to be processed in a copper smelting process has increased for recent years because of an increase in the electronic scrap amount. It has been found that Sb and Ni effect on the operation of our copper electrorefining process. It is found that the current efficiency of the copper electrorefining tended to be decreased as the Ni concentration in the electrolyte increased. The passivation of the process seemed to be more related to SO4 concentration in the electrolyte rather than the Ni concentration in it. The current efficiency decreased when the Sb content in the anode was high. A high Sb content in the anode caused easy passivation by forming a gel-like film in the slime layer. We have developed a method to for see the anode passivation in a short time while generating a slime layer. We confirmed the tendency of passivation through the experiment of changing Pb content in anode. Passivation was easily occur with an increase in Pb content in the anode. The amount of slime increased as the Pb content in the anode increased. This suggests that passivation was facilitated because liquid diffusion near the anode was inhibited. INTRODUCTION The amount of impurities to be processed in copper smelting has been growing in recent years because the amount of electronic scrap has increased. Figure 1 shows that the contents of Sb and Ni in copper anodes have increased since 2007.High Sb and Ni contents in the copper anode decreased the current efficiency of the process and made the quality of copper cathode poor because of the anode passivation and the formation of floating slime in the electrolyte during electrorefining. If these influences of impurities are suppressed, it would be possible to make copper electro-refining current density higher and to process much amount of electronic scrap. We examined the components of our copper electro-refining process like anode composition, slime properties and electrolyte composition, and investigated the mechanism by which Sb and Ni affect passivation and current efficiency. THIS paper deals with the subject of inbye power as the mechanical . engineer sees it, and invites discussion, particularly from the electrical engineer. At the outset, it will be necessary to clear the ground a little by some definite statements. In this question of compressed air versus electricity for the transmission of power and driving of machinery in underground workings, we must see that there are definite fields that compressed air on the one hand, and electricity on the other, can fill to much greater advantage than the other, and in which there can be little or no direct competition, at least for the present. It is under conditions where these fields overlap, and as to where the line must be drawn between the two, that the respective merits of each must be considered. Steam was the first means used to transmit power from the surface of a mine to drive underground machinery, and so long as distances were short and means possible to ensure fairly efficient use of the steam, and where the fire hazard was not in evidence, it gave fairly efficient service. I have in mind an instance during my own connection with the mines-a duplex pump at the shaft bottom at Princess colliery, driven by steam, and which used the steam compound and condensing; and, but for the mechanical difficulties, it was a not inefficient proposition. The steam was taken direct from the surface boiler-plant through a line down the shaft, and used directly at the pump, being in effect a straight conversion from coal to steam to work done. It was the mechanical arrangement, and failure of the pump in that direction, that led to its removal and replacement by something better in the way of an electrically driven turbine pump. Given modern mechanical arrangements, such as a steam-turbine drive on a high-speed turbine pump, and all other parts made in accordance with best practice in the art of steam generation and use, a steam-driven unit fully as economical would have been obtained. But the central electric supply station, and all that that means or promises (not always the same), turned the scale against steam.

"Compressed air still remains an essential source of power in underground hardrock mining. As a power medium it has a high convenience factor, although, in many cases, it is expensive to generate and maintain. Until new methods of breaking rock and/ or satisfactory alternatives to air-driven rock drills are developed, compressed air is indispensable. It is essential to utilize this source of power to a maximum by keeping all pneumatic tools supplied with air in adequate quantity and at optimum pressure.In search of the optimum operating air pressure, con-trolled drilling tests were undertaken at dynamic pressures ranging from 90 to 140 psi.Test results show the effect of increasing air pressure on: the performance of various jackleg drills at varying pressures, the life cost of drill steels and TC bits, and drilling efficiency at varying pressures. From the fore-going, a criterion is proposed for selecting efficient rock drills, and, also, optimum air pressure at each mine can be determined for its particular conditions."

The operation of the pilot plant for the S-C Copper Process during 1976 has provided the basic data for the design of a commercial-scale plant. This paper introduces the commercial aspects of the S-C Copper Process through the presentation of a process flow diagram, a schematic flow diagram and basic design parameters for 75,000 tonnes per year (tpy) copper rod production from chalcopyrite concentrate. Basic operating requirements are outlined and a preliminary estimate of operating and capital costs for a Western Canadian location are summarized. The results have been compared with a modern smelter/electrorefinery to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of these two alternatives and to show why the new S-C Copper Process technology should be of interest to the copper industry.

Introduction Extensive undersea coal-mining has developed on both the east and west coasts of Canada, and at this time some four million tons, or 25 per cent of the total output of Canadian coal, representing a pit-mouth value of $14,000,000 per annum, is coming from coal seams lying under the sea. Of the coal now being mined in Nova Scotia, 55 per cent comes from under the sea, and this proportion is likely to increase. The Province of Nova Scotia is at this date receiving in royalties paid upon coal ?removed from undersea areas a sum exceeding $400,000 per annum. The subject is, therefore, one of special interest to the Mining Society of Nova Scotia and the Canadian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy, and while this paper will deal chiefly with undersea coal-mining in Nova Scotia, an attempt has been made to summarize the development of mining practice in the winning of undersea coal in other parts of the world, with the hope that such a recital may assist in the assessment of local problems. The connection between the mining of coal under the sea and an insular or maritime geography is obvious in regard to Great Britain, Japan, Vancouver Island, Australia, and Cape Breton Island, and also in regard to the curious conformation of Chile; the tendency towards growth of a mercantile marine and naval eminence is equally obvious where coal is mined at tidewater. But, there is the further and less favourable significance that the mining of coal under the sea is associated with poverty rather than with abundance of coal reserves.

Introduction During the past three years at least fifty strings of 9% nickel steel tubing have exhibited excellent resistance .to the variably severe corrosive conditions typical of many of the sweet condensate wells in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. This experience, and the characteristically outstanding performance of other ?nickel alloy steels under hydrogen sulphide corrosive conditions, dictated the selection of 9% nickel steel tubing for the second well drilled in the sour condensate Pincher Creek field of southwestern Alberta. The damaging effects of the Pincher Creek reservoir fluids on well equipment had been manifested in the discovery well by the rapid and not yet fully understood failure of API Grade N-80 tubing, stainless steel wire lines, and alloy steel fishing tools. Two very unexpected failures in the 9% nickel steel tubing, after only six days of service in production tests, instigated an extensive and continuing investigation to ascertain the probable cause of failure. This discussion presents some of the results obtained thus far which cast a little light on the perplexing behaviour of steels in hydrogen sulphide environments in general, and in sour condensate wells in particular. History of Tubing Failures Walter Marr well No. 1, in which the 9% nickel steel tubing failures occurred, produces from the Madison lime at the depth interval approximately 12,200 to 12,750 feet. The gas-oil ratio is about 26,000 and the gas contains 10.2 per cent hydrogen sulphide and 6.3 per cent carbon dioxide by volume.

This paper deals with coal sampling in general and with mechanical coal sampling in particular. The necessity of obtaining representative samples is emphasized. Other sections of the paper are devoted to the design and selection of automatic samplers, with a consideration of the three main types, and the testing, operation and maintenance of these samplers. The cost of the installation of an automated sampling system must be related to the value of the material to be sampled, to the volume of coal involved, and to the savings in labour and economy which can be achieved. Introduction T HE Committee?:; on Coal Sampling of the Coal Study Subsection, Thermal Power Section (Eastern Zone), Canadian Electrical Association, was established in November, 1963, to "study the various problem areas of coal sampling." The first undertaking of the Committee was to at-tempt to survey the problem areas of coal sampling through an evaluation of coal sampling difficulties as experienced at both the plant design and operational levels within the electric utilities represented on the Committee. Increased safety requirements, higher operational costs, greater environmental restrictions, and new competitive processing techniques are the challenges smelter operators must confront in order to remain economically viable. In converting furnaces which have tuyeres such as the Noranda Reactor and the Teniente, Peirce Smith and Hoboken converters, efficient tuyere line management is critical to optimizing blowing rates, increasing refractory life, and improving safety. This paper will describe recent improvements made to equipment used for tuyere punching, tuyere silencing, tuyere pyrometry and refractory drilling of tuyeres and how the proper application of the equipment can lead to operational and safety improvements.

Indoor localization has gained importance as it has the potential to improve various processes related to the lifecycle management of facilities and to deliver personalized and location-based services. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based systems, on the other hand, have been widely used in different applications in construction and maintenance. This paper investigates the usage of RFID technology for indoor localization of RFID equipped movable assets during the operation phase of facilities. The location-related data on RFID tags attached to fixed assets are extracted from a Building Information Model (BIM) and can provide context-aware information inside the building which can improve Facilities Management (FM) processes. The paper proposes a new approach to use received signals from available reference tags in the building attached to fixed assets to locate movable assets. The approach uses signal pattern matching and clustering algorithms for localization. As a result, a user equipped with an RFID reader is able to estimate the location of target assets, without having access to any Real- Time Location System (RTLS) infrastructure. A case study is performed to demonstrate the feasibility of proposed methods.

"All mine shaft conveyances in Canada and most of the United States that are supported by a single hoist rope or attachment point and used for transporting persons are required by regulation to be equipped with safety catches and mechanisms. These safety mechanisms, commonly called safety dogs, are designed to stop and hold a free falling conveyance, with a full personnel load, in the event of a hoist rope or attachment component failure. The conveyance’s safety mechanism must be tested under dynamic conditions before it is used to transport personnel. This paper will discuss free-fall testing and it’s results on conveyance free-fall tests performed in the test tower at INCO Limited, Sudbury, Ontario.Topics covered will be free-fall tests on various wood types such as B.C. fir, Karri wood and Trusjoist MacMillan Limited Parallamwood (PSL), comparison of deceleration rates versus free-fall velocity and the influence of safety dog tooth design on deceleration rates."

FOR MORE THAN 200 years, the Kochiu district of Yunnan province has been, and it still is, the hub of China's tin industry. The district produces annually from 80 to 90 per cent of that country's out-put of tin, which averages about 9,300 tons a year and places China fifth among the tin producing nations of the world. The tin ore reserves of the country are estimated (1) at 1,873,370 metric tons, of which 1,500,000 tons are in the Kochiu district. The mill of the Yunnan Consolidated Tin Corporation, described in this paper, is the only one of its kind in China. MINING AND SMELTING There are only two tin mines in the Kochiu district operating with modern equipment -the Hsin-Chang and the Lao-Chang, both owned by the Yunnan Consolidated Tin Corporation, a government company. The Hsin-Chang mine has four working levels with cross-cuts 6 ft. by 6 ft. and is equipped with steel mine cars and trucks to haul the ore. The ore is hoisted to surface in a three-compartment shaft and transferred to the mill by a 4-kilometer aerial tram. The Lao-Chang mine has two circular shafts 656 feet apart, each equipped with two cages. Haulage-ways 1,600 meters and 1,000 meters long, respectively, have been driven to the southwest from these shafts and are connected by three cross-cuts.

ABSTRACT A revised stratigraphic section of Carboniferous rocks which occupy about 700 square miles in southwestern Newfoundland is presented. Gypsum, which outcrops at thirty-five different localities, is found to belong to four principal zones in the section. The newly mapped structure of the region makes the otherwise random occurrences of gypsum appear as systematic outcroppings of the four zones which follow the regional structure. Details of several occurrences are given and those most advantageous for exploitation are pointed out. INTRODUCTION ROCKS of Carboniferous age occupy an area of about 700 square miles in southwestern Newfoundland. They occur in a belt, from 5 to 15 miles wide, which extends from the head of St. Georges bay southwestward for 65 miles to the mouth of Little Codroy river (see Figure 1). Several hundred feet of Pennsylvanian rocks overlie rocks of Mississippian age, which are at least 12,000 feet thick. The rocks of the Carboniferous section of Newfoundland are very similar to those of Nova Scotia and represent a northeastward continuation of the same palaeophysiographic conditions. Mississippian measures of Windsor equivalence include thick gypsum deposits which outcrop at many places and which extend under large areas as indicated by sink-holes and by structural considerations.

Enterprise optimization is a relatively new optimization approach to mine planning used to jointly consider all aspects of a mining operation affecting the mine planning process and related valuation. In this paper, it is applied at SEMAFO's Mana operations in Burkina Faso, consisting of several open pits and a proposed underground mine. The surface-minable ore is relatively shallow, and the pits are long and linear. The underground operations, as currently envisioned, will consist of a stoping operation accessed by two ramps from the surface. Power is a concern at this property due to local power being produced largely by diesel generators, and it has become one of the key optimization constraints. Other important parameters are the mining and processing rates, underground configuration and cutover elevation. Enterprise optimization was found to improve net present value for the Mana Operations property by simultaneously optimizing multiple parameters and constraints to arrive at an optimal pit and mining phase design, optimal cut-off grades over time, and optimal ore feed based on ore hardness, power constraints, and head wades. Reserves were expanded several times over the course of the study to improve the valuation of the mining operation and put SEMAFO in its present enviable position of ongoing reserve increases.

In order to maximally remove the harmful impurities phosphorus and reduce the loss of valuable elements from Si-based alloy for production of solar-grade silicon, thermodynamic properties of the Si-based alloy were studied. In this work a new model, the Molecular Interaction Volume Model (MIVM) derived from statistical thermodynamics, was successfully used in the Si-based and Si-Fe-based alloy. The calculation started from binary Si-Fe, Si-P and Fe-P systems, then the thermodynamic parameters of ternary systems could be derived based sub-binary systems. Using the activity coefficients of the elements in the Si-based alloys and the saturated vapor pressure of the pure substance of the components, mass fraction of P during vapor-liquid equilibrium can be calculated. The calculated thermodynamic parameters were compared with experimental data available in different publications, and it is found that the thermodynamic parameters calculated using MIVM model are in good agreement with the measured results. The calculated result shows that the mass fraction of phosphorus during vapor-liquid equilibrium of Si-Fe-P melt increases with the increasing phosphorus content and decreasing temperature. This is an important direction for experimental practice in vacuum or low-pressure EML refining of ferrosilicon for potential production of solar-grade silicon without significant vaporization loss of valuable element.

SINCE the opening of the Beattie mine, in 1933, the concentrate produced by flotation has been considered refractory. As the gold extraction by cyanidation was poor, the concentrate, during the first four and a half years of operation, was shipped to a smelter for further treatment. After the installation of the cyanide plant, in 1934, seventy per cent of the gold in the concentrate was recovered before shipment to the smelter. In 1937, a roasting plant was built so that treatment might be complete at the mine. Much experimental work had been done by a number of investigators prior to the installation of the roasters, but none of them had seriously attempted to identify the causes of, or the elements responsible for, the refractory behaviour of the concentrate. Intensive investigation in this direction commenced in the Beattie lab-oratory in July, 1938, has led not only to the identification of several causes contributory to the refractory behaviour, but also to revisions in procedure and principles with respect to roasting Beattie concentrate in particular and arsenical concentrates in general. The accuracy of the identification of these causes and the soundness of the principles is borne out by interpretation of roasting plant records, by improvements and simplification since applied. to plant operation, and also by laboratory and test-plant results on arsenical concentrate produced by another mine. It is the purpose here to present an account and interpretation of the laboratory investigation, together with a correlation of laboratory and plant results. Incomplete extraction of the gold by cyanidation after roasting is due primarily to the nature of the material roasted, and secondarily to the manner in which it has been roasted. There is a possibility that better extraction may be obtained by improvements in both particulars.

INTRODUCTION THE deleterious effect of stress raisers or notches on the resistance to fatigue of machine components, and other parts subjected to repeated dynamic loading, has been well known for many years. Most engineers in the mechanical field have, at one time or another, encountered a shaft which fractured due to a poor transition fillet, a holding-down bolt which failed due to insufficient tightening or inferior thread form, or a fitted member which broke through a combination of fretting corrosion and clamping stresses. All of these are examples of the damaging influence exerted by stress raisers in fatigue. Other common forms of stress raiser which have taken their toll of dynamic components are: keyways, oil holes, splines, quenching oil grinding cracks, tool marks, and sharp changes in section; some are the result of the design, others of poor execution of the design. It is our experience in the Mines Branch1 and I feel sure this will be corroborated by other fatigue investigators, that the majority of failures are due to incorrect design or faulty preparation of the part concerned, rather than to the use of inferior material. Quite frequently, it is true that the operating conditions necessitate the presence of a 'notch', but even in such cases methods are generally available by which its adverse effect on the life of the component can be reduced or annulled. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a few typical stress raisers, and to provide information on various processes for mitigating their effects in fatigue.

This paper presents a discussion of the factors affecting copper scrap markets, including such items as price levels, freight. grades of material, sources and packaging. Reference will also be made to the effective life and turn-around of the copper content of some products. Introduction IN TERMS OF SIZE, copper scrap is second only to ferrous scrap in tonnage recycled. However, in total value, it is second to none. For example, world scrap recovery during the preceding 4 years averaged just under 2,300,000 metric tons per annum, and at an average price of 70 ¢ a pound, this works out at a turnover of about $3.5 billion, which indicates that the copper scrap industry, or recycling as it is now becoming known , is a substantial one.

Introduction In preparing this paper on Recent Developments in Gold Milling Practice, the idea occurred to me that possibly the best way to deal with the subject would be to take you in thought on a visit to the principal gold mining camps of the Dominion, starting at the east and finishing up in the west, and noting, as we go, the outstanding improvements that have been made in the last few years in the practice of gold milling. Before beginning this tour, I desire to emphasize the debt this country, and particularly our mining industry, owes to that body of trained and experienced men, little heard of, but who, working quietly on their problems, are responsible for these improvements. The metallurgists, to whom I refer, have solved many difficult problems for the mining industry, in connection with the treatment of our complex ores; for instance, the silver-cobalt ores of the Cobalt district, the gold ores of the Porcupine district, the gold-telluride ores of the Kirkland Lake? district, the copper-gold ores of Noranda, the arsenical-gold ores of the Beattie mine, the copper-zinc ores of Flin Flon, and the lead-zinc ores of Kimberley. In doing so, they have maintained the high technical standards of the profession, and the practices thus evolved are noteworthy for their high degree of efficiency. When the price of gold increased from $20.67 to $35.00 an ounce, what had formerly been thought to be a low tailing became almost an ore, so that the metallurgists are now busily engaged upon the problem of putting this railing back in its proper place of being a tailing once more, or from its value, at the present price, of anywhere from 50 cents to a dollar or so per ton, to a few cents per ton. Owing to the changing prices of the metals in the world's markets, still greater improvements in metallurgical practices are imperative. An important contributory factor towards improvement in ore dressing is the aid furnished by the microscope in the examination of ores and mill products. By making possible the determination of the mineral constituents of the ore, their association, and grain size, it gives the investigator a knowledge of his problem, before he does any actual test work. In the Mines Branch laboratories at Ottawa, its use has enabled us to predict how an ore should respond to various methods of treatment.
