This paper briefly outlines the develop ment of the froth flotation plant at Coal Cliff Colliery. The plant was superimposed onto the original flow sheet in which fines were merely thickened and filtered. Test work leading up to the installation is described and the final layout is discussed. Details of the concentrate and tailings systems are given. Preliminary results of a further extension involving the use of a Davcra flotation machine are also given.

Higher commodity prices and environmental considerations will make selective narrow-vein mining more attractive in future. Unfortunately, hand-held airleg (jackleg) mining is a mature technology that has safety and productivity limitations. Despite decades of attempted innovation, no obvious successor to airleg mining has emerged. A review of some of the possible technologies is followed by a speculative description of the mine of the future, intended to stimulate thinking and discussion during the conference.

The solubility of cobalt oxide in iron silicate slags has been measured at 1573 K by equilibration of silica and alumina saturated slags with liquid Co-Au-Fe alloys, and by equilibration of silica unsaturated slag with solid Co-Fe alloys, at oxygen pressures of either 10-9 or 10-10 atm (1 atm = 1.013 x 105 Pa). The activity coefficient of cobalt oxide has been calculated and compared with previous studies.

Plant tests of magnetic conditioning have shown increased flotation recovery of paramagnetic sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, sphalerite and pentlandite) in the -38 ¦m size fraction within rougher and cleaner flotation circuits. A statistical plant test was undertaken in the Mount Isa zinc flotation circuit where magnetic conditioning was tested simultaneously in both the rougher circuit and the cleaner retreat circuit (cleaner scavenger). This test resulted in a normalised increase of 1.60 per cent in the rougher circuit zinc recovery and simultaneously a normalised increase of 4.60 per cent in the cleaner retreat circuit zinc recovery - to a very high level of statistical confidence. Interestingly, in a novel approach, it was possible to verify the plant test results in two ways. Firstly, detailed MLA analysis of the tails confirmed the statistical plant test results and showed that the greatest effect of magnetic conditioning was on the sphalerite in the C3 - C6 size fraction, where there was a reduction of around 15 per cent in zinc in tails. Moreover, there was a reduction of around 15 per cent in liberated sphalerite across all -38 ¦m size fractions, but only a seven per cent reduction in non-liberated sphalerite in the tails. Secondly, plant modelling showed that increasing the rougher zinc recovery would cause an increase in zinc feed grade to the cleaner retreat circuit. The increase in the zinc feed grade to the cleaner retreat circuit with magnetic conditioning was demonstrated to a very high level of statistical confidence.CITATION:Gurnett, I, Voigt, P, Lumsden, B and Lines, P, 2012. During the reduction of iron oxide pellets in the blast furnace it has been found that catastrophic swelling (up to 300% volume increase) can occur. Although the burden preparation conditions can be designed to avoid this phenomenon the exact reason and mechanism of the swelling has yet to be clearly identified. Swelling of the burden is undesirable since it reduces the interparticulate voidage in the blast furnace thus reducing gas flow through the stack resulting in low production rates of iron. The present study differs significantly from previous experiments in that reduction is carried out on single crystals of wustite thus the problems of control of gas composition and specimen preparation are minimised. The microstructures formed on reduction have been examined by optical and scanning microscopy. Pure wustite and wustite doped with various levels of CaO have been examined after reduction in controlled CO-CO 2 gas mixtures at 968¦C. The catastrophic swelling on reduction coincides with the formation of an unusually open iron structure in which the iron appears as whiskers or needles as previously reported. The spacing and thickness of the needles are shown to vary with impurity content and gas composition. Metallographic examination has shown in addition, however, that the whiskers do not necessarily constitute the only product form of the iron produced and in CaO containing wustites with less than - 2% CaO there is a transition from needle growth to porous growth of iron. Thus the % swelling of the oxide particles is dependent on the initial size of the oxide grains. Samples of FeO - 10% CaO exhibited a previously unreported product inorphology associated with the nucleation of 2CaO.Fe203.

Selective oxidation of minerals was used in this study to separate by flotation the copper sulphide minerals of chalcocite, covellite and chalcopyrite from the arsenic copper sulphide minerals of enargite and tennantite. It was found that a satisfactory separation of these minerals was only possible after selective oxidation of their surfaces in slightly acidic pH conditions, or after oxidation and selective dissolution of the surface oxidation products with a complexant in basic pH conditions.

These are based on recognition of the prime importance of quality data, accurate geological perception of the deposit, and the judgement of the estimator. The Cleveland Mine has an annual ore production of 400,000 tonnes at a grade of 0.79 per cent tin and 0.30 per cent copper. It is achieved by an open stoping method, mechanised overhead sub-level benching. The operation is trackless with a ramp access from all working places to the surf- ace. Broken material is loaded from the stope and development headings into diesel trucks and hauled to the surface crushing plant.

Mineralisation adjacent to Herberton occurs within three main subcentres. The Her- berton Hill subcentre is characterised by the association of Sn,W the Herberton Dividing Range South subcentre by Sn, and the Herberton Dividing Range North by Cu, As. The relation- ships between the subcentres are discussed in terms of metal distribution, production, deposit types, wall rock alteration and re- lationships with granitoid intrusives. The temporal and three dimensional spatial re- lationships between the centres are uncertain.

Oaky Creek Coal Pty Ltd. currently mines high quality coking coal from both underground and open cut operations at its Oaky Creek Mine. Coal is transported by rail to the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal south of Mackay and to the Gladstone Coal Terminal. Oaky No.1 Underground Mine, Open Cut and Highwall Mine have concentrated on seams from the German Creek Formation, one of the major productive coal measure formations in the Bowen Basin Coalfields. The Imperial Smelting Process Smelter at Sulphide Corporation is one of the earliest plants of its type, and over twenty-eight years of operation the annual output has almost doubled. This has been achieved through continuing development of the component processes, with several innovations introduced by Sulphide Corporation now being used by other licensees of the process. Main development trends have been: 1. Adapting aspects of iron blast furnace technology to the Imperial Smelting Furnace. 2. Change to the use of mixed concentrates and residues as feed materials, with development of sintering techniques to handle these materials. 3. Increasing byproduct recovery and processing to yield value-added products whenever practical. Planned development includes trials of a continuous slag fuming process, and expanding smelter output to 95 000 try of zinc.

Gallery Stoping, an old but little used stoping method, has been reintroduced to workings at the Paringa South Shaft.Orebodies which are amenable to such a method are being mined in this manner with considerable advantages and savings.The advantages of gallery stoping as used at Paringa, compared with traditional mining methods are:1. constant cash flow2. low set up cost and initial stope development3. nearly 1005 recovery 4. no access problems 5. quicker tonnagesAs compared with highly mechanized mining methods, it has been found to be slower but requires less development, gives improved grade control, has less impact on the surrounding rock and fragmentation is much better, reducing secondary blasting costs.This paper examines the mining method and illustrates the advantages of gallery stoping at Paringa.

The zone gives a very characteristic curve on the electric and' gamma ray logs and is thus an excellent correlation marker in the sub-surface over a very wide area. It is probably to be correlated sith.the Toolebuc member described from: outcrops east of Boulia. There .are apparent similarities between the Fishecale zone of the Great Artesian Basin in' Australia and the Fishscale sand of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin.

The patterns of flow of reaction gases through the flash furnace at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter were simulated in a 1:20 scale model using a flow of water. Particular features of the flow down the reaction shaft, through the settling chamber and into the uptake leading to the waste-heat boiler were examined. Inferences were made concerning the effects of the patterns of flow on the efficiency of the smelting reaction, on the entrainment of dust by the gas stream and on the erosion of the refractory lining of the furnace. In addition, the effects of geometrical modifications to the arrangement of the concentrate burners and to the profile of the settling chamber were explored by making these changes to the model and observing the resulting variations in the patterns of flow.

Power ultrasound may be applied to enhancing the processing of minerals. The enhanced performance is achieved through the very localised high-energy release at the mineral surface from the collapse of cavitation bubbles produced by power ultrasound. This gives rise to two effects: initially, the rapid cleaning of mineral surfaces û of oxidation products and coatings of fine adhering gangue minerals û and the attenuation of the boundary layer at the mineral surface during leaching, which allows fresh leachant to contact the surface more readily. Work carried out at CSIRO in conjunction with Tiwest Joint Venture has demonstrated that it is feasible to apply ultrasound to the leaching process in order to enhance the removal of contaminating minerals. When applied to the production of synthetic rutile from reduced ilmenite produced by the Becher process, the use of ultrasound proved beneficial to both the aeration and the final acid leach process. The effect of ultrasound was less marked in the case of the aeration process, once the method of introducing and dispersing the air was optimised. In the subsequent acid leaching step of the Becher process it was found that the application of power ultrasound could reduce leaching time to about one quarter of the time required when only agitation was employed. Projected capital and operating costs, based on currently available commercial equipment, are also presented, and indicate that the use of ultrasound is commercially as well as technically feasible.

The Mount Lyell Company's concentrating mill is situated about a quarter of a mile westward of the portal of the North Lyell tunnel, which serves the North Lyell, Royal Tharsis and Crown Lyell mines, being on the 1100-ft. level of the first named. The Comstock mine is connected with the tram system at this level by five and a half miles of steam tramway, two-foot gauge being standard throughout.The plant is well placed with regard to all essential services and has an excellent water-supply from a series of three dams on the West Queen river.MILLING ORESThe mill feed is a mixture of the outputs from the foUr mines mentioned, each of which has its characteristic ore, but, generally speaking, about half of the ore consists of siliceous schists and the other half of hard grey quartzite. The schisty ores are easy to crush, but, on grinding, while the schist slimes readily, the quartz granules are hard, resulting in the handling of heavy loads on the secondary classifiers. The quartzite ores are both hard to crush and difficultto grind.The principal sulphide materials are bornite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite, chalcopyrite being the main copper-bearing mineral.The crystallization is coarse in the schisty ores, but it has been shown that even the 200 mesh (Tyler) material contains included sulphide particles. At the present time the sizing of the final tailing averages 80% through 200 mesh.

Mine site restoration, involving the re-establishment of original ecosystems, is a far greater challenge than revegetation, which simply aims to stabilise the site and to give it a green appearance. One of the challenges is to establish a simple yet effective measure of restoration success. A potentially useful approach is to focus on particular groups of plants or animals which are likely to provide a general indication of the state of the ecosystem in which they occur. Ants have been used extensively by the mining industry in this context, particularly in northern Australia. Ants are likely to be useful bioindicators because of their general importance in the Australian environment, and because of the many linkages they have with other parts of the ecosystem. Moreover, ant community structure responds to stress and disturbance in predictable ways, and therefore provides an interpretable measure of ecosystem change. This is illustrated by a study of ant recolonisation at Ranger uranium mine. However, the extent to which ants reflect the responses of other ecosystem components is poorly documented. This is currently the subject of a collaborative project between OSS and CSIRO.

The last two years have seen a rapid change-over from mechanised cut and fill. stoping to the more economic and productive long hole open stoping method, such that today more than 80 per cent of total production is won from open stopes. At first drilling was by sub-level rings and/or parallel up and down holes from inter- mediate sill horizons using conventional exten- sion rod equipment. Sub-levels were developed no more than 40 metres apart to allow accurate drilling. Compact, crawler mounted in-the-hole hammer equipment was introduced as soon as it became available in Australia. Today, all open stope drilling is done with three Atlas Copco ROC306 rigs and two Ingersoll-Rand CMM jumbos. Fans of 115 mm diameter holes, varying from near vertical down holes to horizontal, are drilled with a burden of 3 m. Toe spacing varies from 3.5 m to 4 m. An Atlas Copco DG418 booster compressor is used to boost run-of-mine air from 700 kPa to 1400 kPa in the areas of longest drilling. This has improved overall drilling performance in these areas by 40 percent.

The T33-34 blast, the first major blast at Mount Isa Mines, broke 1,360,000 tonnes of copper ore using 349 tonnes of explosives. The original concept of firing T33, T34, T35 and U37 separately was changed during the life of the project due to adverse ground conditions. These conditions also caused the stoping method to be modified after the firing of the stopes had started. To stabilise the two stopes T33 and T34 where large fall off was occurring, rib pillars were left in the original slot. This caused the blast design to be more complex as these rib pillars had to "lead" the blast. The implication of such a large blast on the underground and surface environment was thoroughly investigated and precautions taken. The charging time of the blast was six weeks. Hook-up was started four days before the blast and continued until two hours prior to the blast. Detailed scheduling was carried out of other work that had to be done in the 24 hours before the blast to ensure that there were no delays in the firing.

The ""comparable sales"" method of valuation attributes value to an asset by reference to actual sales of comparable assets or to the market capitalisation of companies with comparable assets. This methodology is widely used in real estate valuations. The real estate approach can be used to value mining and exploration properties where there are actual sales of comparable or similar assets in the recent past. The practical limitations of the comparable sales method are well known and self evident: limited number of transactions, limitations on comparability and inadequate data. The real value of the comparable sales method is in its use as a validity check. Estimates of value of mining and exploration assets are so sensitive to so many variables that all valuation methods have limitations. Accordingly there is real value in attempting to establish benchmarks from comparable sales. Apparently sophisticated valuation methods can mislead by creating the impression that valuation is a precise science. The judgement of the valuer is critical and judgements can be wrong. Any available evidence from actual sales that are even remotely comparable can provide useful input to the valuation process.
