Sulphuric acid leaching at atmospheric pressure of a number of Australian nickeliferous laterites was examined in detail. The results obtained indicate that nickel can be extracted from these ores, although the conditions required to achieve about 90 per cent extraction vary widely. These differences in reactivity can be related to the types of nickel-bearing minerals present.Nickel is more readily extracted from nickel-bearing clays such as chlorite, than it is from nickel-containing goethite.The results clearly show the problems associated with the processing of complex ores such as the nickeliferous laterites, and they indicate the need for complete characterization of each deposit.

A panel cave using LHDs for ore extraction came into production at Premier in 1990 at a depth of 630 metres below surface on the western side of the mine in the BA5 mining block. A post-undercut mining sequence was used with all development on both the undercut and production levels completed prior to the undercut being advanced over the pre-developed drawbells. Support and rock mass damage on the production level was extensive as the undercut moved overhead. Undercutting and coarse fragmentation created problems. The mining sequence was changed to an advance undercut with the minimum of development and support undertaken on the production level prior to the undercut moving overhead. Only once the abutment stresses had stabilised were drawbells developed and final support installed. The height of the undercut drill design was decreased from 18 to 13 metres. The changes resulted in markedly less rock mass and support damage on the production level. Lessons learned in the BA5 mining block on the 630 level were incorporated into planning and scheduling the BB1E mining block which came into production on the 732 metre level on the eastern side of the mine in 1996. An advance undercut mining sequence was planned, undercut height was minimised and undercutting parameters were optimised in terms of the BA5 experience. Numerous problems still occurred. As the undercut area increased in size severe spalling from the cave back resulted in vertical propagation of the cave to a height of 30 metres instead of the planned 13 metres. The resultant coarse fragmentation created secondary blasting problems and an excess of undercut ore that had to be loaded and trammed, slowed the rate of undercut advance. The planned mining sequence was compromised and considerable support and rock mass damage resulted on the production level below. Once these problems had been overcome the undercut advanced at the planned rate and continuous caving initiated at the predicted hydraulic radius. At a later stage the unexpected ingress of water hampered undercut drilling and slowed the rate of undercut advance in a section of the cave. Leads and lags between adjacent tunnels and the overall face shape could not be developed as planned. The rate of natural horizontal cave propagation exceeded the rate of undercut advance and three undercut drilling tunnels were extensively damaged. More tunnel development on the production level prior to undercutting than was planned resulted. The slow advance of the undercut and high abutment stresses caused extensive damage to installed support and the rock mass on the production level, 15 metres below. Experience in the BB1E mining block on the 732 metre level has taught that an advance undercut mining sequence reduces damage on the production level markedly. Extremely tight control on the rate of undercut advance, leads and lags between adjacent tunnels and overall undercut face shape as well as extraction ratio, tunnel development and support sequence on the production level below is required. Premier Mine plans to implement a block cave at a depth in excess of 1000 metres within the next decade. All the experience gained on current mining levels together with data collection and numerical modeling is being used to plan the proposed mining operation. The geotechnical challenge of mining at this depth in weak rock has been identified as the greatest risk to the project. Challenges centre around adopting the correct mining sequence, limiting the extent of rock mass damage associated with undercutting and effective support. The hydraulic radius needed to initiate caving, fragmentation, drawpoint spacing, secondary blasting and the possibility of seismicity are geotechnical concerns that are being addressed. Results to-date suggest that a pre-undercut mining sequence with all development and support on the production level carried out only after the undercut abutment stresses have passed overhead will have to be implemented.

Exploration work at the southern flank of the Mt. Coffin diapir has encountered three different types of copper ores: copper carbonate, largely malachite; secondary sulphides, mainly chalcocite replacing pyrite; and a primary arsenopyrite-tennantite-tetrahedrite-chalcopyrite association. The secondary copper ore is occasionally stratiform but mainly erratic at the contact between tillites and siltstones of the Tapley Hill formation.There have been two stages of primary mineralization.1. Arsenopyrite, tennantite, and tetrahedrite occur in siderite veins.2. Revival of the diapirism has caused fracturing and local brecciation of the rimrock and subsequently ascending solutions precipitated chalcopyrite. The chalcopyrite also partly replaced arsenopyrite, tennantite, and tetrahedrite.

The primary purpose of these investigations is to determine dewatering requirements and likely impacts associated with mining operations. Standard aquifer testing techniques were carried out at multiple locations within the Ord Range near Pardoo, Western Australia. Aquifer properties of an oxidised haematite orebody were calculated from test pumping data conducted in five fully penetrating test bores. Hydraulic properties of the Ridley magnetite orebody were calculated based on short term constant rate pumping tests, and packer tests. Packer tests were conducted in undeveloped and uncased exploration holes and diamond core holes. The new data sheds light on the hydrogeological properties of this previously unexplored region of Western Australia.Aquifer testing procedures for each bore included a preliminary step test followed by a constant rate test. Recovery data were collected in each bore over a period of four to six hours. Prior to testing, background water levels and water samples were collected in a network of monitoring and exploration bores to establish baseline water levels, gradients and water quality. Water quality within the bedrock of the Ord Range varies from 2000 to 5500 mg/L TDS whereas water quality within the alluvial sequence of the De Grey River is highly variable (400 to 2500 mg/L TDS), but is predominantly brackish with some water of potable quality which is used to supply Port Hedland. Test pumping supports the conceptual hydrogeological model that consists of a pod like orebody (aquifer) surrounded by low permeability waste rock (BIF), with very weak hydraulic connection to the adjacent alluvial systems. Calculated hydraulic conductivity from test pumping data across Pardoo ranged from 0.01 to 59 m/d, depending on deposit tested.A groundwater model was used to simulate dewatering required in proposed pits and to estimate the impact of dewatering on the surrounding shallow alluvial aquifers. Test pumping and numerical groundwater flow modelling indicate the proposed below water table pits can be successfully dewatered utilising in pit dewatering production bores. Yields from individual dewatering bores will reduce with time due to the reduction in saturated aquifer thickness.Based on the numerical groundwater modelling and field investigations the likely impacts to the adjacent De Grey River alluvial aquifer system (within the Priority 1 De Grey River Water Reserve) resulting from mining and dewatering activities is considered minimal. Recalibration of the groundwater model will be undertaken once several months of dewatering data are available.The aim of this paper is to present a range of aquifer parameters derived through standard aquifer testing techniques for an area previously unexplored in terms of hydrogeological characteristics. It is the goal of the authors to provide this comparison data set for future work in similar geologic media.

Digital Simulation of Particulate Processes The inherent complexity of mineral particulates (shape, size and mineralogical texture) has challenged conventional simulation model approaches for decades. Much effort was expedited in using mathematical assumptions to accommodate stereological effect. With the advance of instrumental methods such as x-ray microtomography 3D structure can, in many cases, be measured directly. The information derived from such measurements provides direct input to building the structural digital model. In addition digital simulation methods that enable creation of process realistic particulate properties in an efficient digital computer space have demonstrated their effectiveness to model a variety of realistic packing, sorting and multi-phase processes. The paper reviews recent advances in the use of information derived from 3D micro-tomographic imaging and laser scanning technology can be coupled with digital methods to enable simulation of tablet compaction and dissolution, filtration and permeability, column packing and leaching kinetics, packing and cementation of nuclear waste. By assigning 'properties' to a digital zone (voxel) in the computational space it is possible to mimic the realistic characteristics of quite complex particulate mineral processing systems. The system self-adapts to correct the coherent particle characteristics (shape, size, compound, porosity) with time. Such simulations are useful to elucidate the sensitivity of system performance to variations in process parameters. Dimensional scaling of the approach is also possible, as the case studies will illustrate, in deploying the method to both small (micron) and large (m) features. The use of process realistic simulations presents experimental challenges in code validation. It is in this context that other tomographic methods play a role in direct 3D measurement of system behaviour such as electrical and optical sensors.

High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) have been used for more than 20 years to grind iron ore pellet feed. Besides coarse comminution (crushing), where HPGR are installed upstream of the ball mill, there are numerous flow sheets where HPGR are used after ball milling and dewatering for re- or finish grinding.There is a clear growing interest in grinding of pellet feed with HPGR during the last few years. In addition to their known advantages of low specific energy consumption, high availability, low steel consumption and improved pelletising processes the lower environmental load (reduced or no water consumption) became a strong driving factor for the application of HPGR in pellet feed grinding.This growing demand increases the interest in better understanding of the HPGR grinding process with fine iron ore concentrates. One of the most important process parameters is the moisture content of the feed material which influences the performance of the HPGR enormously. The HPGR can react to fluctuations of the fresh feed properties to a certain degree by adjusting grinding force and roller speed. Nevertheless, there are limitations by the physics of the compression process and the capability of water absorption by the concentrate. The capability varies for different concentrates and different specific surface areas. The additional information that Clarke and Taylor (1982) provide about the important but poorly documented Ardlethan deposit is, of course, very welcome. However their contention that structural considerations, in conjunction with petrology, alter the interpretation of the mineralogical and geochemical data presented previously (Scott, 1981) is not accompanied by adequate supporting evidence. Indeed characteristics of the orebodies studied invalidate their arguments.Heterogeneity between matrix and fragments is not a problem in the South Cherry and Ardwest orebodies because most samples are comprised entirely of interlocking hydrothermal assemblages with a fabric and mineralogy that is uniform through both former breccia fragments and matrix. In hand specimen, the rock superficially resembles altered granite and, as indicated by Clarke and Taylor (1982), a brecciated texture is difficult to discern. In thin section, relict brecciated textures can be observed as localized changes in the grainsize or in the distribution of minerals that outline former breccia fragments (P. J. Eadington, 1982, personal communication).Because of the intense brecciation and comminution of rocks (fragments < 10 mm are usual) in the South Cherry and Ardwest breccia bodies, hydrothermal recrystallization was complete, resulting in homogenization of fragments and matrix. Furthermore, the amount of sample analysed (-100 g for drill core and 2-3 kg for hand specimens) is sufficiently large to be representative of both former breccia fragments and matrix. The Carpathia and Stackpool orebodies, with their abundance of sedimentary fragments, have alteration superimposed on a heterogeneous fabric, and were not studied. Thus the problems of differentiating between fragments and matrix (Clarke and Taylor, 1982) are irrelevant to the particular orebodies described in my paper.Within the alteration halo, which is several hundred metres wide (Paterson, 1976), the very uniformity of the alteration assemblages implies that subsequent, postmineralization brecciation is of only minor significance.Indeed tourmaline pipes in the Ardwest pit are less than several metres across (Clarke, 1979) and produce minimal alteration in the surrounding rocks. Therefore the interpretation of the mineralogical zonation is not compromised by the recognition of several periods of brecciation.

Instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas have occurred at various times in several working districts of Metropolitan Colliery, N.S.W.They have occurred in headings only, under both hand and mechanised conditions, and with seam gas ranging from mainly methane to nearly pure carbon dioxide. A modification of inducer shotfiring using a shear cut was introduced in 1955, and in 1961 full face firing both to a machine cut shear and off the solid was introduced. The current series of outbursts -1961 to 1963 - has been induced under these systems with full control of the time of outburst, but without prediction, and with some disappointing production features.Various aspects of current conditions and practices at Metropolitan are considered singular, such as the coarse granulometry of outburst coal, the prevalence of floor heave, the absence of strong structures at outburst sites, the possibility of outburst at any stage in pillar formation up to the last few yards, the effect of rate of advance on outburst occurrence, and the mildness of many outbursts experienced.It is concluded that inducer shotfiring is a reliable control but it suffers by comparison with outburst-free conditions, and that control by preyention would be preferable.INTRODUCTIONThe phenomenon of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas has been described in detail previously (Hargraves, 1958). Briefly, it is a combined gas and stress hazard of deep coal mining, usually occurring in virgin work and during active face advance, when coal and seam gas burst from the face into the workings.Instantaneous outbursts have occurred sporadically at Metropolitan Colliery, N.S.W., since 1895. The observation of lower-than-predicted Fe/Cu ratios in the cementation of copper on iron in tests at elevated temperatures indicated that some other reaction was contributing to the reduction of cupric sulphate in addition to the reduction by elemental iron. Experiments showed that the copper sponge, which initially formed on the iron, subsequently reduced the cupric sulphate giving the products cuprous oxide and sulphuric acid.Tests were undertaken to determine the rate and equilibrium conditions of the reduction reaction with variations in the types of the reducing agent and solution parameters. The reaction first became apparent at temperatures above 50°C and as it ceased at pH 1·8 it was possible to induce further reaction by alkali addition.

Interpreting the behaviour of granular material and simulating the gravity flow are complex processes in cave mining methods. In this paper, a new Cellular Automata based code – FlowSim – is used as a flexible tool to simulate the gravity flow and subsidence zone in block caving mines. The simulation results of the gravity flow model in a real scaled mine as well as a scaled physical model are presented in this study. In this research, FlowSim was first calibrated at a mine, based on the information obtained from smart markers. These markers were located in five points of the second block of the Esmeralda sector, at the El Teniente copper mine, Codelco, Chile. The calibration was performed with the objective of reducing the discrepancy between the extraction zone defined by markers in the mine and FlowSim outputs. Regarding the mine data, FlowSim was calibrated with the minimum error of ten per cent between real and simulated results. Then, the calibrated FlowSim model was used to simulate the flow behaviour of a scaled physical model. This model was constructed in the Block Caving Laboratory of the University of Chile to scale down the same block of the Esmeralda sector with the scale of 1:200. The FlowSim outputs show that this software enables the simulation of the gravity flow of the scaled model with less than five per cent discrepancy in grade and dilution entry to the drawpoints. According to the obtained results, this paper recommends FlowSim as an appropriate tool which can improve the design of production level in block caving and can enhance the prediction of the subsidence zone and dilution entry.CITATION:Castro, R, Hekmat, A, Fuentes, M, Armijo, F and Rodriguez, F, 2016. In 2003, Independence Group NL purchased the Long Shaft Nickel Mine complex (Long) in Kambalda, Western Australia. Lightning Nickel, the nickel operating arm of Independence Group, faced considerable challenges operating the mine, with the most significant challenge being able to prove that the remnant ore at Long and the associated orebodies could be mined safely and efficiently. Given the seismic history at Long, the magnitude of these challenges could not be underestimated. In an effort to achieve 100 per cent extraction of the flatter orebodies, traditional methods such as room and pillar were dismissed. A method consisting of transverse sills, butting into each other was proposed. To stop fill material from the first sill rilling into the adjoining sill, it was proposed to backfill the sills with pumped cement fill. The capital cost of the fill plant was estimated to be in excess of $1.5 million and the cost for cement alone was $1.0 million per annum. Shotcrete was already an extremely useful tool in dealing with the widely variable stress environment, but was to be used in an innovative manner that would enable the full extraction of a tabular section of the Victor South orebody. A layer of shotcrete, approximately 100 mm thick, was to be sprayed on the up dip wall of the initial development sill. The sill was to be backfilled with ænormalÆ development waste and ætoppedÆ with sand backfill. The next sill, ie slightly up dip and alongside, was to be mined along the shotcrete boundary wall. With respect to wall stability, the premise was that the shotcrete wall would stay in place and prevent the backfill (development waste and sand) from rilling into the adjoining development. It was also proposed that any breaches of the shotcrete wall would be repaired using shotcrete before substantial inflow of backfill into the ænewÆ development. This paper describes the development and implementation of this mining method, as well as some of the associated financial aspects.

THE art of mine surveying has made very great progress in recent years, and is still advancing, perhaps faster than any other branch of surveying. The scope of the mine surveyor's duties has greatly increased, his instruments and methods have improved, the responsibility of his position is greater, and the end is not yet in sight.It might be supposed that such a steadily growing subject would have an adequate literature, but this is by no means the case and outsiders commonly judge mine surveyors by their text-books. Hardly any condemnation can be too strong for most of these books. The English books truckle to the antiquated and crude methods apparently still in use in England, and thereby largely aid in perpetuating them; they commonly in illustrative examples give the distances in fathoms, feet, and inches; they spend page after page discoursing on instruments that should have been forgotten long ago; they try to antagonize theory and practice by detailing such calculations as that a certain vein will contain 2,003.907 pounds of galena per square fathom, and then reduce this amazing quantity to hundredweights, quarters, and pounds. Nothing can be more unscientific, or, for that matter, less businesslike, than unwarranted assumptions of accuracy; it is, perhaps, the greatest curse of applied science. Here we have a calculation to thethousandth part of a pound, when there is probably an unavoidable error of two hundred pounds. What shall we say of a man who explains how to measure the depths of shafts to the hundredth part of an inch by means of short brass rods screwed together...

Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd, a wholly owned Government of India Enterprise, was established in the year 1976 to develop mine and plant facilities to produce 7.5 Mtpa of high-grade iron ore concentrate at Kudremukh. The mine and plant facilities were commissioned in 1980. In view of high demand for iron oxide pellets in iron and steel industry worldwide and as a diversification activity, a pelletisation plant of 3.0 Mtpa capacity was commissioned in the year 1987 at Mangalore for production of high-quality blast furnace and direct reduction grade pellets for export. The pellet plant capacity has been increased to 3.5 Mtpa by technological improvement which included installation of roll press for quality and productivity improvement. In addition, the pellet capacity is being increased to 4 Mtpa by the addition of Shaft Pelletising Furnace plant.

Evaluation of Grinding Medium Wear in Stirred Mills The standard fine grinding machines in the minerals industry are stirred mills whose performance largely depends on the competency of the grinding medium. Medium wear in stirred mills is one of the key parameters for medium selection. A wear evaluation methodology is developed and applied in this paper to measure the wear rate of river sand using a laboratory batch stirred mill. The procedure is demonstrated by testing the sand medium in a 0.55 kW batch stirred media detritor (SMD). The sand wear rate determined in the laboratory batch mill is successfully scaled up to that determined on a full-scale Metso 355 kW SMD mill.

The oxidation of ferrous sulphate to ferric sulphate with air and oxygen in a gas lift percolator was investigated with initial Fe2+ concentrations in the range 0·01 M to 1·0 M,temperatures in the range 20-80°C, and pH in the range oto 2.The rate of formation of Fe3+ was found to be well described by the rate expressionEquation 1and a consistent mechanism is proposed.The presence of Cu2+ was found to cause an increased rate of oxidation, the effect being greater with Cu2+ concentrations increasing in the range 0·001 M - 0·01 M in 0·2 M Fe2+. The effect of other solutes containing Ni, Zn, Mn, Co, Hg, Cl, Mo, NH4, As, Cr, or Na at a concentration of 0·001 M in 0·2 M Fe2+ was negligible.

Process control limitations have led to suboptimal performance of the crushing section of Sishen MineÆs Jig Plant. The performance of the PID (proportional-integral-derivative) controller implemented during commissioning was hampered by the relatively small buffer capacity between the crushers and screens. The inability to maintain the tertiary crushing chamber under full choke conditions lead to inefficient crushing and reduced crusher product cubicity.Model predictive control (MPC) was implemented in the tertiary crusher plant in May 2012 and resulted in a throughput improvement of six per cent in its first month. The controller was further optimised and indicated a throughput improvement of 16 per cent during on/off testing in July 2012. The throughput improvement is attributable to the finer crusher product resulting from operating the crusher under full choke conditions and controlled feed rate to the tertiary crusher plant screens. The next step is to couple the model predictive controller, automated gap control system and an economic optimiser to ensure maximised throughput and value from the resource.CITATION:Leeka, E K, 2013. Electronic noses are being used in the processing industries and in fields such as environmental and occupational hygiene to detect a wide variety of problems from contaminated foods to toxic chemicals in soils. Recently, research has been conducted into the use of these devices for detecting spontaneous combustion in mines with the aim of producing a method for early detection of a developing heating. Gas samples were collected from both SimtarsÆ 16 m3 large-scale spontaneous combustion reactor and the University of QueenslandÆs two-metre column. The samples were analysed using an electronic nose. GCMS and HPLC were used to identify some of the components present. A number of issues both from a practical mine situation and a scientific standpoint have been identified that need to be addressed before these devices can be used to detect a developing heating. Aluminised bags routinely used in the mining industry to collect gas samples for analysis of the permanent gases are not suitable for use with electronic nose devices as they have a æfingerprintÆ from the polymer lining that interferes with the coal heating fingerprint. Tedlar bags used for environmental gas sampling are also unsuitable due to their fingerprint. Gas samples can be collected in glass gas bulbs with aluminium seals and successfully analysed. However the aluminium foil used to seal the bulbs is a restricted item in underground mines. It was also found that the volatile organic fingerprint of the coal heating was extremely weak at temperatures below 130¦C. Before a useful application can be developed, further investigation into the chemical species present in the off-gases from Australian coals is required.

THE flotation plant at Mount Lyell was erected, primarily, for the treatment of ore from the Lyell Comstock mine. These workings are situated over a mile in a direct line north of the North Mount Lyell mine, and are connected with the Reduction Work at Queenstown by a 2-ft. gauge steel tramway via the Queen River valley a distance of 7 miles. The property was purchased from the Mount Lyell Comstock Copper Co. After the disastrous fire in the North Mount Lyell mine in October, 1912, steps were immediately taken to make Lyell Comstock ore available for treatment, in order to relieve distress caused by any prolonged stoppage of work, and subsequently 13,032 tons of ore, averaging 3.38 %copper, 0.28 oz. silver, and 0.034 oz. gold; were smelted. When operations were resumed at the North Mount Lyell mine, it was evident that there was no economic advantage in smelting Lyell Comstock ore as compared with the higher value North Mount Lyell ore, which was also a better flux for the Mount Lyell pyrites, and that the future of the Lyell Comstock ore depended upon cheap mining and successful concentration of the ore. Therefore, extensive trenching and diamond-drilling was carried out, and a sufficiently large quantity of ore proved available for cheap extraction by open-cut methods. At the same time bulk tests by flotation were carried out at the Minerals Separation testing plant in Melbourne on different classes of ore from the Mount Lyell Comstock mine proper, followed by laboratory tests at Queenstown on all classes of ore available. All these tests demonstrated that the ore was amenable to the process, provided that it was ground finely enough. This paper is dedicated to the memory of our friend Peter McKenzie who contributed much to the knowledge of the New South Wales Coalfields.ABSTRACTA fossil river system was recently mapped over parts of the Southern Coalfield, N.S.W. This river system occurs in the roof strata of the Bulli Seam. Sandstone of a fluvial nature was deposited in its course. The sandstone exhibits strong sedimentary vectorial properties and has a marked influence on strata-control in colliery workings.The sedimentary features analysed indicate an approximate S200W flow direction. Petrological studies reveal a clastic, well-cemented sedimentologically and structurally anistropic rock type. Washouts have been found and isopach maps of both sandstone and underlying roof-strata have been compiled. Relevant measurements were carried out in existing colliery workings and on bore cores.Optical determinations of feldspars revealed the presence of plagiocIase feldspars with few exceptions. Most of the feldspars are altered to clay minerals. It was found that a geographical trend exists in the distribution of feldspars, with more basic plagioclase in the northern part of the field.The source area of the fluvial sandstone lies to the north of the Southern Coalfield.Petrofabric analyses were done on several specimens of the fluvial sandstone. In the vicinity of major disturbances, penetrative fabrics were discovered.Calcites (e, 0112), micas (001), and quartz (crystalIo graphic c) show preferred orientations.

Gold was determined directly in eight different mill cyanide solutions, by atomic absorption spectroscopy in an acetylene-air flame. Some of the mill solutions were diluted with water to bring them into the most sensitive absorption region (5-50 p.p.m. Au) whereas those solutions with very low gold content «2 p.p.m.) were concentrated by evaporation.Calcium was complexed with ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) to avoid the undesirable effect of a precipitate on atomization.When added to standard gold solutions, EDTA had no effect on absorption, nor did any of the impurities common in mill cyanide solutions.Known amounts of gold, ranging from 2 to 30 p.p.m., were added to mill solution'aliquots and recovered to within 100 ± 2·5 per cent. For duplicate determinations under normal worKing conditions, standard deviation was 1·32 p.p.m.Excellent agreement was found between atomic absorption gold values and accurate fire assay values.INTRODUCTIONAtomic absorption spectroscopy has been shown to offer a rapid and accurate method for the determination of trace amounts of a number of metal ions.
