Mining of the silver-lead-zinc orebodies at the George Fisher Mine officially started in 2000. A review of mining performance to date shows that many of the extracted primary stopes have experienced some degree of hangingwall dilution. The degree of hangingwall failure in the stopes became progressively more extensive throughout mining of the orebodies in 2001 and 2002, culminating in the unplanned catastrophic failure of the 744D stope in which the ore between 13C (2683RL) and 12L (2714RL) sublevels caved into the previously mined cavity between 13L (2654RL) and 13C sublevels. This was followed several months later by another unplanned caving event in a nearby stope, 740D. As a direct result of these unplanned failures it was decided to mine the stopes with a smaller span than had been previously planned and in a primary-secondary pyramidal stoping sequence. To limit the exposure of the stope hangingwall, a hangingwall drive is no longer developed and therefore geologists no longer have access to the detailed geological information that this provided. Geologists at George Fisher Mine have had to be adaptable and flexible in response to these proposed changes and rely more on data from drilling than mapping for their geological interpretation. The result is that the drilling cycle has become much more critical in the planning process.

Macroscopic and microscopic studies of the outburst-prone Gemini Coal (Bowen Basin) showed that outbursts were associated with a localized inertinite-rich ply. Previous studies of the Gemini Coal had shown a general relationship between desorption rate, regarded as a good measure of outburst proneness, and inertinite content of coal samples.Desorption rates increased with increasing inertinite content and were highest for inertodetrinite-rich samples. These results suggest that inertinite content and composition play a significant role in outbursting and may be useful in identifying outburst-prone coals, which could be confirmed by desorption measurements.Consequently outburst-prone areas in the Upper Permian coal measures ofthe Sydney, Gunnedah and Bowen Basins have been defined using a combination ofthe parameters, inertinite content, depth ofcover and coal rank. In the Upper Permian, inertinite-rich coals are confined mainly to the top of the coal measures, except in the Sydney and Gunnedah Basins where an inertinite-rich interval (Bayswater Coal and correlatives) is also present towards the base of these measures. Only a small area ofthe central Sydney Basin, butmuch ofthe north-eastern and north-central part of the exposed Bowen Basin is considered outburst prone on the basis of these parameters.The most outburst-prone inertodetrinite-rich lithologies have a patchy and unpredictable distribution in the top of the Upper Permian coal measures. They can be defined only by sampling and petrographic analysis at the subsection level.

Cyanidation tests by bottle agitation were conducted on an oxidized lead-silver ore containing approximately 12% Pb and 500 g/t Ag. Over 60% of the silver was leached when the ore was ground to 100% passing 0.15mm, whereas 50-60% of the silver was leached when the ore was only ground to 100% passing 0.5mm. Slurry handling and dewatering at the fine grind size were very difficult due to the high clay content of the ore, however this problem was greatly reduced at the coar- ser grind size. The silver recovery at the fine grind size was very dependent on cyanide solution strength with stronger cyanide sol- utions (containing more than 0.1% NaCN) re- sulting in lower solution silver contents. This was thought to be due to the precipi- tation of leached silver by zinc, which was also leached from the ore by the higher cyanide levels. There was a critical zinc level in solution of approximately 1000ppm, above which the silver recovery fell markedly. Cyanide and lime consumptions for this ore were high (typically 5 kg/t and 40 kg/t respectively), hence the processing of this particular ore by cyanide leaching is un- economic at current silver prices.

Carbonic acid leaching of crude iron-containing magnesia derived from Savage River magnesite yields a magnesium bicarbonate leachate with a substantial soluble iron concentration. The iron concentration depends upon the leaching conditions (particularly time, temperature and pulp density) but is generally in the range 0.005-0.5 g/litre. If this soluble iron is not removed prior to the precipitation of the magnesium as a hydrated carbonate, then this product will be contaminated by the iron, and will not yield a final product (high-purity magnesia) that meets specifications.The soluble iron content of the magnesium bicarbonate leachate can be reduced to an acceptable level by addition of solid aluminium sulphate either during carbonic acid, leaching of the crude calcine or to the clarified leachate. Chemical analysis and X-ray diffraction revealed that the iron is precipitated as an iron-containing hydrotalcite-type compound, [Mg6(Al,Fe)2(OH)16]CO3.4H2O. The actual composition of the precipitate depends on the amount of aluminium sulphate added and the precipitation technique used. Because precipitation of iron in this manner also results in reduced magnesium recovery from the leachates, It WIll be necessary to develop methods for recovering the magnesium component of the precipitates.

There are many underground mines with shaft or decline access with limited production capacity or where the mine may become uneconomical as trucking costs escalate with increasing depth of the decline. In such cases a need may exist for a shaft hoisting system which can be constructed more quickly and more economically than a shaft sunk by conventional methods. Relatively cheap small diameter shafts can be constructed by raise boring. This paper describes a simple hoisting system which has been designed to take advantage of the benefits of raise boring. The system uses twin bored raises with a double drum winder hoisting a skip in each hole. The design concept is based on 1. accepting that the raises cannot be truly straight or vertical, 2. using the raise to guide the conveyance, and 3. minimising operating, maintenance, and capital costs. The hoisting system requires a certain degree of accuracy in the alignment of the twin raises. A survey of raise boring practice showed that the required accuracy could probably be achieved with conventional techniques. However it was thought it would be necessary to survey the pilot hole during drilling and to be able to correct the hole if deviation became

Hydrocyclones have widespread use as classifiers in applications such as mine fill preparation and coal preparation. A fundamental conflict often exists between recovery of all of the valuable material and maintaining the quality of the product. This conflict is a result of a portion of the feed material passing through the cyclone, effectively without undergoing any classification. This paper describes an investigation, undertaken as an undergraduate project in mining engineering at the University of NSW (Brook, 1994), into aspects of cyclones in which supplementary water injection is used in an attempt to reduce the amount of misplaced fine material reporting to the coarse product and hence improve the overall classification efficiency. In particular, the study concentrated on the effects of different modes of water injection. Two methods of introducing wash water into the cyclone body were investigated. A series of tests were performed on a laboratory hydrocyclone having provision for radial water injection at different levels through small orifices in the wall of the conical section, and a preliminary study was made of the performance of a novel cyclone in which the conical section had walls of a permeable polyethylene, permitting a uniform introduction of wash water over the entire surface.

It is suggested that if adequate knowledge is available about classifiers in closed grinding circuits, these units may be used as on-stream size analysers when equipped with suitable sensing devices. Research work which is at present in progress to enable a hydrocyclone to be used for this purpose is discussed.

SINCE writing the above-mentioned paper, some further indicator cards have been taken from the No. 1 machine, and the writers believe that a reproduction of these cards will be interesting as illustrating the performance of the machine after fifteen month steady running, night and day, seven days per week and twenty-four hours per day, at the average speed of fifty-seven revolutions per minute (see Fig. 1, page 60). For the past twelve months no adjustment have been made in the valve setting, and the only repairs have been in connection with the springs of the poppet valves, and these but slight, the springs latterly having been removed. The cards illustrated were taken with one indicator, and, therefore, are not simultaneous, andmay show to some extent the yariations of individual strokes, and with that qualification may be taken as typical of the machine's average performance.In connection with some feed-water measurements of the winding engines a rough test was run with the two compressors, the Riedler and the Corliss, coupled to the condenser, and running at fifteen and fifty-seven revolutions per minute respectively, with the result of 15.9 pounds of steam per indicated horse power per hour. This result, though only approximate, seems to indicate that the No. 1 machine is running under the guaranteed consumption, and that it is capable of maintaining this under the severe conditions of everyday practice.

The complexities of mining in current economic conditions, where ore extraction schedules are varied on a weekly basis so as to ensure constant supply to the process plant, can result in a number of scenarios that pose geotechnical challenges. This paper presents a case study where alterations in the mining schedule of a particular mine resulted in the necessity to mine under a large uncompacted embankment, ie integrated tailings and mine waste land form. To effectively ensure that ore recovery was maximised, a well-designed slope monitoring system to evaluate design performance and to provide timely warning of impending failures was imperative. In order for an appropriate slope monitoring strategy to be developed, a thorough understanding of the potential slope failure mechanisms, capabilities and limitations of available monitoring techniques is required. Communication of the monitoring results and response strategy to alarms generated by monitoring systems must also be carefully considered to maximise effectiveness. The results of preliminary stability modelling can be used to guide the design of a monitoring system, which in turn can then generate data which can be used to iteratively refine the geotechnical model. This paper illustrates the development and implementation of a slope monitoring system and associated communication system, using the Daydream embankment at Fortescue Metals Group's (FMG's) Cloudbreak Operations as a case study.

A fast, non-contact technique for measuring sizes of rock fragments on a conveyor belt is presented. An image processing technique called active stereopsis is used which makes use of a light stripe projected on to the surface of the fragments on the conveyor belt. A CCD TV camera is used to capture the shape of the distorted light stripe. the video image of this shape is then processed by a computer program so that the 3D profile of the surface can be obtained by triangulation. The sizes of the rock fragments are then calculated from this profile. The speed of the technique is improved by calibrating the light stripe system before measurement begins so that the profile of the fragment surface can then be measured using simple geometry. The technique is fast and highly parallel so that it is able to operate in real time.

The objective, of the Diesel Emissions Evaluation Program (DEEP)-sponsored project at IncoÆs Stobie mine, was to conduct a long-term field evaluation of selected diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems, available to the underground mining industry. Nine state-of-the-art DPF systems were retrofitted to heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles and were subjected to extensive long-term in-mine evaluation. Periodic efficiency tests were conducted at various stages of the study (in 2001, 2002 and 2004) to establish in-use efficiencies and durabilities of the tested DPF systems. During efficiency tests, the vehicles/engines were operated over several steady-state operating conditions. Various instruments were used to measure particulate and gaseous emissions upstream and downstream of the filter systems. The results were used to assess the effects of the filter systems on the concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM), nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide in the vehicle exhaust. Experience with the operational issues related to deployment of the filter systems on underground mining vehicles, coupled with the assessment of the filtration efficiencies, were the primary objectives of the study. The variety of filtration systems and regeneration concepts used in this study offered the opportunity to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of the various types. Some of the major issues studied were criteria for selecting the filter media, means of regeneration, the long-term operational reliability, and the occurrence of unwanted secondary emissions.

In mining operations, the removal of overburden to expose the ores is achieved by rock blasting using ammonium nitrate based explosives, eg ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixtures, commonly known as ANFO. However, ammonium nitrate can react with pyritic shales that are often found in many mines, leading to premature detonation or spontaneous explosion. In order to minimise the occurrence of spontaneous explosion, the reactivity of the shale in a mine must be assessed. This will provide a better understanding of blasting risks and thus will improve the safety and the cost efficiency of blasting through the selection of appropriate explosives. In this study, shale samples were collected from different locations in Western AustraliaÆs Mt Whaleback iron ore mine and geochemically characterised. The reactivity of the shale samples towards ammonium nitrate and ANFO was investigated using a combination of large-scale firing range tests and laboratory isothermal reactor tests. Results of the firing range tests show that the reactive ingredients of the shale are the limiting factor for the reactions between shale and ANFO. Based on the firing range test results, further isothermal reactor tests were conducted to investigate the reactivity of shale samples towards ammonium nitrate under controlled conditions. Analysis of the results from the firing range tests and the isothermal reactor tests shows that there are correlations between the reactivity of shale samples and several geochemical characteristics such as sulfate, sulfur, ferrous and zinc content.

Results are presented of the investigation of gas dynamics of the blast furnace process obtained on laboratory models and operating furnaces. Gas residence times were measured using a helium tracer technique developed for the purpose. Residence times were determined in furnaces of 1007 m3 and 1719 m3 and results used in the calculation of the burden parameters and to estimate the distribution of the gas flow along the furnace radius. The effect of tuyere injection of coal dust on gas distribution was also investigated and the advantage of continuous injection compared with intermittent injection is noted. The unevenness of gas distribution across the furnace area is found to correlate well with differences in the size analysis of the iron-bearing component of the burden. The mixing of the gas streams between the neighbouring raceways was studied. It is shown that in the central region of the furnace gases from every tuyere are mixed together, whilst in the peripheral regions mixing is more localised and includes only the sections consisting of five adjacent tuyeres. A solution is proposed to the problem of a theoretical evaluation of the critical gas velocity. A simple relationship between the Reynolds and the Archimedes numbers was obtained from which, after substitution of the burden size data and the gas parameters, it is -possible to evaluate the critical gas velocity. Conclusions include information relating to the optimisation of the gas distribution and views on reducing gas injection at elevated furnace levels.

The northern Bowen Basin has a very large resource of coalseam methane gas-in-place - 136 TCF(7ohnson and White, 1988). The gas is pipeline quality, being 98-99 per cent methane with traces of carbon dioxide and higher hydrocarbons. The largest resource of natural gas within the coalseams of the northern Bowen Basin is contained in the Moranbah Coal Measures (75 per cent). The next most important resource is in the combined upper Fort Cooper (16 per cent) and Rangal (nine per cent) Coal Measures. The far northern parts of the basin have low gas contents due to the combined effects of limited extent of the coal measures, shallow depth and low rank. Reserves per well are more than double that of the best coalseam methane wells in any basin in the United States. In some areas of the Moranbah Coal Measures, the gas-in-place estimates exceed 225 million cubic metres per well (80-acre spacing). A distinction is made between resource base, as determined from this basin assessment, and the deliverability potential. Parameters used to estimate gas-in-place (coal area, thickness, density, rank and depth) can be adequately extrapolated from areas of high- to low- data density. Parameters affecting methane production (permeability, gas depletion factor and critical desorption pressure) cannot be generalised. Exploration and development programs must rapidly develop a predictive capability for these factors, on a local scale, through geological modelling and confirmation drilling.

Iron ore in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia varies in composition giving iron ore a range of densities. An accurate density figure of the material leads to accurate calculations of production throughput. Density studies of two separate iron ore mines were conducted in the Pilbara. Procedures and results are reported here.The Pilbara Region of Western Australia has a number of iron ore operations. Two mines have conducted density studies of their materials. The purpose for the studies was to determine an accurate in situ bulk density that could be applied to volume and tonnage calculations of the operation. It was identified that density was one culprit causing calculation variations. Density is an important figure used to estimate ore reserves, equipment requirements, production rates and indirectly costs and sales revenue. One study was conducted at Rio TintoÆs Robe River Mine based near the town of Pannawonica. Its Mesa J orebody is currently being mined and is a low-grade deposit of goethite and hematite (Burnham, 2003). A separate study was conducted at BHP BillitonÆs Yarrie Mine situated north of Newman and east of Pardoo. Its orebody consists of high grade formed by a supergene enrichment of cherty material and a burial metamorphism to produce hematite (Richardson, 2002). The method used to determine density was by large-scale samples using the pre-mining in situ volume of the material and the weight in tonnes after mining.

The main iron ore deposits of Western Australia fall into three very different geological classes, which are, in order of importance: hematite enrichment ore, pisolitic limonite ore, and sedimentary ore. These are presently (1973) being mined in the approximate proportions 20 : 2 : 1, while the equivalent proportions for reserves are, very approximately, 200 : 70 : 1. Two minor categories which mar- ginally qualify as ore are detrital material variously referred to as scree ore or canga, and potentially beneficiable iron formation. These two latter types are dealt with very briefly, and the three main categories are dis- cussed in order of economic significance. Hematite enrichment ore results from the selective replacement of a pre-existing host rock by hematite. Almost without exception, this host is cherty banded iron formation (BIF); but certain exceptions have great genetic inter- est. Ore bodies of this kind occur both in the Archaean BIFs of the Pilbara and Yilgarn Blocks and in the Proterozoic BIFs of'the Hamersley Basin. It follows from their virtual restriction to a single kind of sedimentary host that there is strong stratigraphic control over the shape of ore bodies: these may be almost flat, of dyke-like form, or of complex configuration, according to the pre-enrichment structure of the host bed. Corporate governance has never been more topical. A glance at any major newspaper or business publication will reveal a litany of corporate failures based upon the governance of the organisations involved (eg Byrne, 2002; Hayes, 2002; The Economist, 2002). The increased compliance requirements and speculative nature of our industry means that corporate governance systems are, if anything, more important than in the general business community (Arthur, 2001). Rather than focus exclusively on the contribution of governance to corporate failure within the mining industry, however, our objective in this paper is to examine how boards can add value to the corporations that they govern. In order to highlight how a board can add value to a company, we commence by outlining the role of the board in the modern corporation in general and the mining industry in particular. We then introduce the concept of shareholder value and identify the steps on which a board needs to focus to enhance shareholder value through value tracking processes. Our discussion pays particular attention to the importance of organisational culture to the companyÆs activities and utilises three case studies from the mining industry. We conclude with an overview of what mining boards can do to enhance their culture and drive performance changes for the benefit of the companies they govern.

An innovative, biological treatment process has been designed by MSE Technology Applications, Inc to treat and control acid mine drainage (AMD). A field-scale demonstration is being conducted under the Mine Waste Technology Program using water flowing from a historic mine in Montana. A successful demonstration of an in situ process will allow it to be employed at numerous other abandoned or remote mines, which discharge AMD, an acidic, metal-contaminated water. Conventional treatment methods are costly and are often impossible to use at remote locations. MSEÆs technology uses a biological system to clean up AMD. The In situ Passive Biological Treatment Process utilises nonpathogenic bacteria, which are able to neutralise acidic mine water and remove contained toxic metals. These bacteria live within a series of pile-type reactors inside the mine. The bacteria are fed inexpensive waste products. The resulting discharge is clean water flowing from the mine. This presentation will show that this technology offers a natural cleanup method for the nationÆs numerous abandoned mines. The Luzon arc extends for about 900 km from Taiwan to the island of Mindoro (central Philippines); in this area late Tertiary to Recent volcanism is considered to be the result of eastward subduction along the Manila Trench. The arc is composed of five segments, all of which have individual characteristics with respect to tectonic setting and magma chemistry (Defant et al., 1989). From the north to the south these are (Fig. 1): (1) the eastern Coast Ranges of Taiwan and the islands Lan-Hsu and Lu-Tao (Taiwan Segment), (2) the islands off the north coast of Luzon (Babuyan Segment), (3) the Northern Luzon Segment, (4) the Bataan Segment, and (5) the Mindoro Segment. Defant et al. (1988) suggest that the Bataan and Mindoro segments of the arc, both of which are characterized by different isotopic compositions and levels of large ion lithophile element (LILE) enrichment in the lavas, are separated by a 'pull-apart' zone, the Macolod Corridor.We are currently studying the mineralogy and petrochemistry of Late-Miocene to Pliocene volcanism in the Northern Luzon Segment (NLS), which comprises the geographic area of the Cordillera Central. This area has so far received limited attention, inspite of its wealth of porphyry copper, skarn and epithermal gold deposits. In this contribution we report the first results of our study of igneous rocks from the Mankayan Mineral District (MMD) which is located in the centre of the arc segment under consideration.

The coastline is. an incomparable stretch of sea coast known as Ninety Mile Beach. Two gas pipelines and two oil pipelines carrying hydrocarbons from thb'Bass Strait fields to the markets of Australia cross this beach. They cannot be seen as they are laid in trenching stretch- ing many miles out to sea and the beach was restored to its natural state. Even where the dunes were disturbed, suitable grass was sown thus consolidating the sand and preventing erosion. Ninety Mile Beach is but one of the many key.wildlife and recreational areas that our operations must be concerned with. Others include Westernport and Corner Inlet, but the one discussed in this paper in particular is the platform area of the Bass Strait itself. Never was the old adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" more meaningful than in offshore oil production. All are well aware of some of the events of the past several years that resulted in large and costly oil spills. Far less is known, seen or publicised about the measures and developments that are undertaken to ensure that such events do not occur. We also have well developed plans for response in the event of an emergency situation, which can be initiated with great rapidity. Our responsibility is to ensure that with the best of engineering technology and operating procedures, spills do not occur.
