A recently discovered high temperature (22G-2800°C) reaction between glycerol and the oxides and hydrous oxides of iron produces a green, well-crystalline complex glycerato-iron, whereas hydrous nickel oxides an) reduced by the glycerol to metallic nickel. When nickel isomorphously substitutes for iron within the goethite lattice this high temperature glyceration allows a separation of the two metals whereby the nickel can be extracted by solution techniques.

Gold Fields Ghana Ltd (GF Ghana) currently operates an underground mine at Tarkwa, in south--west Ghana. The mine was operated by Tarkwa Goldfields Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the State Gold Mining Corporation of Ghana (SGMC). The mine was making operating losses and in a poor state of repair. Tarkwa Goldfields retrenched all the staff and GF Ghana assumed management responsibility for its own account on I July 1993.

ALTHOUGH the development of the various flotation processes during the last 8 years has been so revolutionary, this development has been, until recently, entirely confined to the separation of the gangue from the mixed metalliferous sulphides.The desirability of finding some method of separating the independent sulphides from such a miXture, by means of flotation, has long been recognized. ThIS need was emphasized when the slimes resulting from the grinding of Broken Hill sulphide ores were for the first time successfully dealt with by the Mineral Separation Company's process on the Central mine. This process proved the practicability of separating the sulphides of lead and zinc as a mixed concentrate from the gangue present in slime. Although this was a very notable achievement, the process has not been generally used, owing to the mixed lead and zinc concentrates resulting from the treatment being acceptable neither to the zinc nor the lead smelters.Although the introduction of eucalyptus oil in minute quantities as an emulsifying agent has simplified the work of the subsequent tabling of mixed sulphide concentrates, rendering unnecessary the burning off or removal of the oil, there will always be a considerable quantity of slimy product too fine to settle on the moving surface of the concentrating machines, and therefore requiring other means for its division into lead and zinc concentrates.

The hydro-chlorination of Fe2O3 and Fe304 has been investigated in the range 850-950¦C in order to elucidate the role of iron in the segregation process for nickeliferous laterites. The kinetics of Fe203 chlorination using 20% HC1 - 80% N2 gas mixtures is consistent with a single-stage structure control model, whereas Fe3O 4 exhibits a two-stage reaction mechanism. Oxygen potential measurements using a CSZ probe located above the bed and X-ray powder diffraction results confirm the proposed reaction scheme. When a serpentine nickeliferous laterite (1.03% Ni - 11.7% Fe) was chlorinated at 900¦C with a 20% HCl - 80% N2 gas mixture it was found that the iron oxide in the ore was extracted in a similar manner to the synthetic iron oxides. Also, it was found that the nickel extraction from the ore paralleled that of the iron and the tests indicated that for the major part of the extraction, the solid nickel species were in equilibrium with the gas phase. The recovery of nickel from laterite ores by the segregation process has been investigated by a number of workers and several extensive reviews of the literature associated with this field have been published (Iwasaki, 1972; Canterford, 1975; Wright, 1973).

Effective selective mining relies heavily on high quality geological data and assay data. Such assay data is dependent on effective sampling protocols, sample preparation techniques, assaying practices and well founded quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) procedures. This paper describes recent developments in grade control sampling at PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals high-grade Kencana gold mine at Gosowong Indonesia and presents a case study in identifying, minimising and monitoring random and systematic sampling error including the use of duplicate sampling and the Thompson Howarth technique for quantifying random sampling error.

Fluid flow in a 1:14 scale water model of the shaft and settler of the Kalgoorlie Nickel flash smelter has been investigated by flow visualisation and numerical modelling. Detailed flow fields through the reaction shaft, settling chamber and uptake are presented for flow rates up to 800 Vm and a number of burner configurations. The predicted flow fields were compared with experimental data obtained from streak photographs and video recordings. The effects of cessation of flow through individual burners and changes in shaft dimensions were also Investigated.

The word "optimization", refers to the search of an economic optimum, or, more precisely, to the choice of technical parameters which will define the more profitable mining project, knowing the values of the economic parameters. In fact, there is no direct way to perform this optimization, because the extremely large number of technical factors involved, from the type of working and its selectivity to the characteristics of the mill and its flexibility, makes it impossible to make a comprehensive survey of all possible projects. Beside, it would be meaningless to engage in such a task as the deposits themselves are not really known, but only estimated, with sometimes a high level of imprecision. Not to mention the numerical instability which would affect such a computation! In addition, the "best" project is not necessarily the one which strictly maximizes a given profit formula. There also exist human factors which have to be complied with, when choosing the cutoff grades for instance. Finally, there are other non-numerical factors which interfere with the choice between several projects: the shape of the bottom of a pit of the layout of the access road for instance.

In April 1987, Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) commissioned an ISASMELT reactor to smelt 15t/h of copper concentrate at the Mount Isa Copper Smelter. This unit was based on the Sirosmelt lance technology and incorporated features proven in the Lead ISASMELT plant which has been operating in the MIM Lead Smelter since 1983. From April 1987 to June 1989, the copper smelting plant treated 167000 tonnes. Concentrate, coal and fluxes are fed continuously to the furnace. Oxygen enriched air is injected through a lance which is submerged in the slag bath. Matte and slag are tapped together through a single taphole into a reverberatory furnace, and from there are treated with normal reverberatory furnace production. Advantages of the process include its ability to eliminate most lead and arsenic in feed, its flexibility with respect to feed composition, sizing and moisture, and the plant's low capital cost. Acceptable refractory life has also been demonstrated. The commissioning of a 70 t/day oxygen plant has rerated the plant from 15t/h to 18t/h while allowing a reduction in fuel usage of one third. A trial using 150 t/day oxygen was carried out in May 1989, and showed that the furnace could treat 48 t/h chalcopyrite concentrate while maintaining a very low fuel requirement. The oxygen trial results have given considerable confidence for plant scale-up. Detailed project evaluation is currently underway for the replacement of the roaster and reverberatory furnaces at Mount Isa with a single 110 t/h ISASMELT reactor.

The Beruang Copper-Gold Deposit is located very near the centre of Kalimantan in Indonesia. It is a dacitic tuff hosted deposit currently being explored by Kalimantan Gold Inc of Canada. Exploration activity to date at Beruang has been focused on the Main Zone, which is defined by a north-south elongate, 1 + 1.5 km zone of anomalous copper and gold, and intense phyllic alteration. The disseminated sulfides responsible for the anomalous copper values produce a moderate to high chargeability signature. Phyllic alteration is overlain at high levels, and on the western edge of the Main Zone, by advanced argillic alteration. The dacite tuffs hosting the mineralisation are cut by post-mineralisation dacite dykes that are delineated by ground magnetics and geological mapping. Base metals, principally zinc and lead, form broad halos around the Main Zone. These metals are incorporated in massive NE-trending, polymetallic mineralisation that outcrops to the north and south of the Main Zone. IP survey results highlight the highly pyritic NNE-trending shear zone, which hosts most of the copper mineralisation in the Main Zone. A high chargeability anomaly at depth in the central-east part of the Main Zone is interpreted to be the source for mineralising hydrothermal fluids. This is suggested by zonations in alteration and mineralisation. A deep chargeability anomaly can be correlated with the downward plunge of a pyritic breccia, encountered at shallow levels in drillholes, and is a potential breccia pipe target. Compilation and inversion modelling of the IP results has yielded some interesting drill targets.

HPGR technology has been used at a number of magnetite mines in the world and have significant energy advantages over SAG and AG technologies. The early design at Los Colorados in Chile has been in operation for more than 12 years - and operates very successfully though only reduces the feed size to -5mmThe Whyalla project magnet design pushed the concept to produce a preconcentrate of 80%-350micron - a significant reduction on previous plants though with some wear problems in the early years. The Karara design backpedalled slightly and will only crush to 80%-1.8mm.However, the design issues of using a HPGR to further reduce the feed size continue to be explored. The aim is to reduce the process risks associated with wear and also to reduce the complexity of the downstream process - with consequent benefits in terms of capital and operating costs.The designs are being developed for a couple of projects - one planned to produce 20Mtpa of concentrate with the potential to not only remove SAG and AG milling but also ball milling. The concept is to use multiple passing through the HPGR since, on the data available, the efficiency of the HPGR to reduce size does not significantly diminish as the feed size is reduce. The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Fimiston Open Pit is located on the eastern boundary of the Kalgoorlie-Boulder City and is mining an area traditionally known as the Golden Mile. The pit area has been continuously worked since 1893, predominantly by underground mining methods and more recently through open cut mining. There are over 2000 km of old mine headings and numerous stopes under the open pit area. KCGM has interpreted and digitised the underground mine plans and stope sections into a common database. A 2D-model software package, called Pits, was developed in-house and allows old workings to be displayed at any bench level; this is integrated with 3D Vulcan modelling software, which allows triangulated surfaces to be displayed. Almost every mining activity is affected by underground workings. The effective management of the interaction between current mining and the underground workings is very important for safety and production. A specific ævoidÆ management department has been formed and its broad objective is to minimise the impact of underground workings upon production while maximising safety. Special criteria and procedures have been developed and implemented to keep personnel and machinery from being exposed to unsafe ground. It is of primary importance to accurately define the location and outline of underground workings in advance. Probe drilling has been used as the key tool for that purpose. Various geophysical methods have also been trialled on site to detect underground workings; these are discussed in some detail. This paper discusses ævoidÆ management issues such as data integration, void detection and flagging. The impact of underground workings on mine planing, production and slope stability is also discussed.

The originally estimated mine life at Kidston (starting 1984) was 12 years. Through a continuing process of re-evaluation and improvement in the operation and by expanding the geological knowledge in the region, the mine life has been considerably extended. With falling grades and harder ore, the additional reserves have come with increasing risk - not only in an economic sense associated with diminishing profit margins but also operationally, requiring innovative milling technology and geotechnical designs to provide a lower cost environment for continued profitable mine production.

Regional synergies concern the capture, recovery and reuse of by-products, water and energy between industrial operations in close proximity. The Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP) undertakes applied research to further advance regional synergies in the Kwinana Industrial Area in Western Australia in order to achieve greater efficiencies in water, energy and materials consumption and reduction in waste and emission generation. The Kwinana Industries Council (KIC) and its member organisations recognise water consumption and disposal as key environmental issues. Some 30 companies in Kwinana consume a total of more than 35 000 ML/yr of fresh water. Over the past years significant progress has been made towards the reduction of water consumption and improvements in effluent disposal. As part of the CSRP Kwinana Synergies Project, water balances for the ten major water consuming companies have been completed, including workshop sessions with company staff on water synergy opportunities. This work resulted in a set of synergy opportunities which are currently being pursued. In parallel to the Kwinana project, the CSRP has commissioned a supporting project that delivers a toolkit to guide a more targeted and less resource intensive way to identify feasible water synergy opportunities. One of these tools focuses specifically on water, and takes count of input and output water flows within a given industrial area to deliver listings of prioritised water synergy opportunities. This paper discusses the water mapping and workshop approach taken in Kwinana and its outcomes, which are to identify and evaluate water synergy opportunities. The results from the trial application of the developed Regional Eco-Efficiency Opportunity Assessment Toolkit are also presented.

They hav' been formed during the Cainozoic Era by supergene enrichment ò6f Precambbrian: manganiferoius sediments, and by deposition from -solution on, or'in caves in, the Cain- ozoic land surface. The manganese in solution was derived from the weathering of Precambrian manganifer.ous s.edimexsts, None of the deposits are of hydrothermal origin, nor are they related to igneous rocks in any war, other than as ultimate source rocks. There is ho evidence-'t.o.:sugge,st that meta- morphism has been responsible for.the emplacement of any deposit. The tenor of the ore varies'aec'ording'to the quantity of gangue in the orebody and- also to the nature of the part- icular ore minerals. The main ore.mine.rals are the oxides pyrolusite and cryptomelane and the 'o'xide-silicate braunite. The main gangue minerals are hematite, limonite and quartz. The deposits of high grade oreò(-above.45 per cent Mn) range in size from 50 tons to many thousands of tons but most of them are in the 500-5,000-tons r .nge .

The design of crawler-mounted conveyor belts installed for the handling of brown coal in open cuts is described.INTRODUCTIONThe State Electricity Commission of Victoria operates two brown coal open cuts at Yallourn, Victoria. The larger of these cuts produces n million tons per year of brown coal containing 67 per cent. moisture, and the smaller, at Yallourn North, produces 1-1 million tons of coal, with a moisture content of 50 per cent. A further open cut at Morwell with projected output of 9-10 million tons per year is in the course of development. In the larger Yallourn open cut coal is excavated by means of conventional bucket chain and bucket wheel dredgers and transport is by electric locomotives and saddle bottom trucks running on 90 cm. gauge railway tracks. At Yallourn North, coal until recently has been largely won by 3i and 5 cu. yd. electric shovels and transported by large diesel-enginedmotor trucks. The difficulty of keeping these trucks in operation during the winter periods owing to the v.ery wet conditions and the high cost of maintenance of these vehicles led to the introduction of a moving face conveyor system.EXISTING CONVEYOR INSTALLATION AT YALLOURN NORTHA conveyor system employing a 36-in. belt running at a speed of 400 ft. per minute and having a nominal capacity of 425 tons per hour with 50-h.p. drive units, was selected as appropriate for the output of the open cut. It is my pleasure to deliver the first Keynote Address to the first joint conference between The Australasian Institute of Mining and- Metallurgy and The American Institute of Mining, Metallur- gical and Petroleum Engineers. I am particularly pleased to be participating in this first joint meet- ing as I have been a member of one Institute for 41 years and the other for 35 years. An examination of the membership of both Institutes confirms the fact that the mineral in- dustry is an international one. This has long been the case and basically stems from the occurrence of mineral resources in most countries of the world. It is therefore fitting that these two 'Inter- national Institutes', representing the professions involved in the mineral industry, should choose `International Resource Management' as the theme of the first joint conference. The topic of this Keynote Address is `The mineral equation' or the counterbalancing supply and demand items and the factors affecting them. I propose to attempt to present the overall picture of the mineral equation as subsequent papers and sessions will deal with specific items in more detail. My thesis is broad and deceptively simple; it is that the continued existence and growth of world material civilization depends, in large measure, on the continued use and further dis- covery of world mineral resources. Material civili- zation is used as a broad term to include the pro- duction of man's shelter and tools together with the production of the `consumer' goods and ser- vices needed by society. First let us spend a few minutes looking at the development of material civilization.

The Writer's knowledge of this region began in 1912, while he was with the Geological Survey of South Australia, and, investigated the principles governing the occurrence of fresh and saline ground waters in the area then being opened for closer settlement by the railways under construction from Port Lincoln.These field investigatons for water were extensive rather than intensive, but other examinations covered certain mineral aspects. The Writer also has' had the benefit in the preparation of this paper, of later work done by others, as well as of the monumental earlier work in South Australia by the late H. Y. L. Brown.AREAThe area dealt with, approximately 21,000 square miles, lies to the south of the latitude of Port Augusta.TOPOGRAPHYAs a whole the region is one of low relief, but the Olinthus Range, west of Cowell and north of Cleve, reaches an elevation of 2,000ft., while there is als0 a high area west of Port Lincoln and Tumby Bay. At the north end of the region the Gawler Ranges are formed by the dissection of a thick sheet of felspar porphyry extending over two degrees of longitude, by a width of 20 to 70 miles, with fairly uniform maximum elevations of the undissected portions of the order of 1,000 ft. above sea level. India has limited resources of coking coal. Most of the coking coal seams are located in Jharia Coalfield. These seams were worked in the past by the bord and pillar system in a haphazard manner, which has resulted in honeycombs of old working. Most of such areas are under fire. In order to meet the demand of coking coal in the 21st century, it is essential that the coal locked due to old underground workings is recovered fully by conducting opencast mining to an ultimate depth of 500 m. The major problem envisaged in conducting opencast mining in such areas will be the stability of pit slopes over voids and the behaviour of subsided material in the pit slopes. An attempt has been made to simulate this complex situation from a specific section of the rockmass of a mine in an equivalent material (EM) model. The old workings existing in upper coal seam (V) were simulated by developing staggered bord and pillar workings in two sections and depillaring them. Opencast mining was conducted for recovery of coal locked due to irregular working in coal seam V. The slope instability caused by intersection of the slope with the void, during frontal working (by shovel-dumper combination) was observed in various situations. THE Mount Morgan mine has, from the time of its historical discovery, been the subject of investigation and speculation by geologists and mining engineers. The first examination was made by Dr. R. L. Jack, in 1884. He came to the conclusion, from theevidence then available, that nothing but a thermal spring in the open air-otherwise a geyser-could account for the formation of the ore body. This report attracted world-wide attention at the time. Since then the mine has been examined by most of the leading geologists of Australia, and by many from elsewhere. In all cases the examination has only extended over a period' of a few days or weeks, and in the light of present knowledge of the deposit we know that sufficient data could not be obtained in such a short time to warrant the statement of definite conclusions. It is not to be wondered at, therefore, that a considerable difference of opinion exists as to the genesis of the deposit. That the company considered more detailed investigation necessary is shown by the fact that some thirteen years ago it employed Mr. Charles Walker as geological surveyor on the .mine. At that time also the data available was insufficient to give satisfactory results. It is, however, a matter for comment that none of the geological reports on the property took notice of the increase of copper values in the ore with depth, though the present workings and diamond-drilling...
