A geologic, petrographic and geochemical study has been performed on the pyroclastic flow deposits in the coastal area of East Zhejiang Province, Southeast China. This study leads to classification of the pyroclastic flow deposits into three associations: the extrusive type, the surge type and the ash flow type welded tuff associations. Through detailed investigation and comparison of the characteristics of these lithologic associations, with emphasis on the welded tuffs, a comprehensive model has been proposed to demonstrate the petrogenesis of the pyroclastic flow deposits.

The evaluation of ore deposits consumes much effort, cost and time, hence research work must aim to minimize these inputs with no loss of accuracy. The present study is devoted to assess the optimum conditions and methods of calculations which give minimum costs of ore exploration. An area of (a x a) where "a" is the zone of influence of the semi-variogram, i.e. (2800 x 2800 square metres) located within the Abu Tartur plateau is the subject of the intensive study. The distances between boreholes are varied ie. a/4, a/6, a/8 and a/ 10 respectively. The average ore grade (G), thickness (t) and relative ore reserves (tG) are calculated by four methods. The results indicate that at a distance equal to a/5, the inverse distance squared method gives the best results. These parameters save about 50 percent of the cost of exploration with a map accuracy greater than 90 Percent.

Opencast Lignite Mining requires topwall strata of seams to be fully depleted and footwall aquifers sufficiently depressurized. To prevent a spread of the cone of depression into protected wetlands some distance away, alternatives had been investigated such as closing water works, underground slurry wall barriers and recharge by infiltration. As a result of these investigations, the infiltration method has been chosen and in a first phase during the next decade it will utilize as much as 55 x 106 m3/year. Using this approach, the survival of the wet lands is assured.

A research program was conducted to determine the relationship between operating conditions and medium losses in Mt Newman Mining's Beneficiation Plant. It was found that major medium losses were adherence losses and losses fran the overflow from the water recovery cyclones. Operating density and medium blend were found to have a significant effect on the medium consumption. Viscosity was thought to be the underlying factor. This viscosity problem was overcame by adding dilution water to the cyclone spigot discharge to reduce viscosity. Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS), Hallimond tube flotation tests and microelectrophoresis measurements have been used to investigate the reactions involved in the adsorption-ion of K-amyl xanthate on finely ground pyrite. Pure pyrite was finely wet ground, at different pH values, in specially built laboratory stainless steel or iron rod mills. Amyl dixanthogen was the only product identified on the surface of pyrite when stainless steel rods were used. When iron rods were utilised, ferric xanthate and physically adsorbed xanthate ions were observed in the superficial phase. The use of iron media was found to depress slightly the floatability of the mineral.

A stibnite flotation concentrate from Costerfield in Victoria was found to contain 63.3 g/t An while its sizing distribution indicated that 81.6 per cent of the material was less than 38 ¦m. A 24 hour cyanidation test by a standard bottle roll method recovered 15 per cent of this gold. Pressure cyanidation under conditions of ambient temperature, 40 per cent pulp density, an oxygen pressure of 1000 - 2000 kPa and an initial NaCN concentration of 15 kg/t, resulted in a recovery of 65 pe cent of the gold after only two hours of leaching. Aqueous pressure preoxidation of the concentrate followed by the standard bottle roll cyanidation realised gold recoveries as high as 96 per cent. The Merensky Reef at Northam Platinum Mine in South Africa is characterised by a high degree of variability with respect to reef elevation (difficult to mine), as well as mineralogy and texture (difficult to process). Development along strike and down dip of multiple reef types has led to unpredictable run-of-mine characteristics that pose problems for the mineral processing circuit at Northam. Following mining terminology, Normal, Transitional (NP2) and Pothole (P2) Merensky reef types can be defined, and this geometallurgical study aims to characterise and understand the relationship between their mineralogical characteristics and laboratory scale batch flotation performance. The plagioclase-rich NP2 reef ore is the easiest ore to process in terms of capacity for high mill throughput as well as flotation performance. The lack of very fine-grained disseminated sulfide textures in the NP2 reef ore results in better liberation characteristics relative to the Normal and P2 reef types. Consequently, chalcopyrite, pentlandite and sulfide recoveries are highest for the NP2 reef ore. The lack of ferromagnesian minerals in the NP2 reef ore also results in the recovery of the least amount of floatable gangue during flotation tests. The Normal and P2 reef ores are similar to each other, with an orthopyroxene-rich mineralogy with associated alteration minerals. The P2 reef is also characterised by the highest sulfide content and degree of pentlandite liberation. Chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite liberation is only significantly increased by a change in grind for the Normal reef ore. The change in grind, however, only significantly affects pentlandite flotation performance and overall froth stability for the Normal reef ore. However, for all three ores, a small change in grind has a detrimental effect on pentlandite flotation performance.

Two-dimensional (2D) estimation approaches have significant advantages over three-dimensional (3D) approaches when dealing with a narrow vein- or layer-like geometry. The main motivation for 2D estimation is that bias due to non-additivity of grade is avoided. The various aspects of 2D estimation are illustrated by use of a case study from the 1A Shoot Nickel deposit at Leinster, Western Australia. The width of the 1A mineralisation is variable, and so are the angles of drilling intersection. Consequently, the variable of interest (in this case nickel grade) is not suitable for direct kriging because it is defined on non-uniform support. However, grade can also be defined as the ratio of two variables that are suitable for direct kriging: thickness and accumulation. In the 2D approach, tonnage equates to thickness and metal equates to the product of grade and thickness, also called æaccumulationÆ. In the simplest approach we can independently krige accumulation and thickness and derive the grade by the ratio of the two resultant estimates. The thickness and accumulation variables must be in a consistent projection orientation, for example a horizontal projection in the case of steeply inclined mineralisation like 1A. Because the density is not constant across the 1A (and most other) deposits, the issue of density weighting is also discussed. The impact of the correlation between grade and length, or grade and density are important issues in implementation of 2D estimation. The circumstances under which these correlations need to be taken into account (by co-kriging) are reviewed. Finally some comments are made on the final use of the resultant 2D estimate for mine planning purposes.

The Snap Lake Phase I project initiated a subsampling campaign on the material (kimberlite/metavolcanic/granite) mined and treated for diamonds. The campaign was aimed at determining the optimum subsampling program to subsample the feed to the bulk sample plant (BSP) for the duration of a sampling campaign. This paper describes the application of GyÆs formula for determining the subsample size and other good sampling practices to determine this subsampling campaign. Three main issues are discussed: the use of a hammer sampler to sample off a moving conveyor and the practical experiment to determine the optimum subsampling program; bias introduced by laboratory equipment including two sizes rotary splitters; and variability of the feed material to the BSP over time.

In this paper, the use of topology preserving projections (Sammon maps) and neural networks are considered as a basis for the construction of multivariate statistical process control charts for a semi-autogenous grinding circuit on a gold plant. Comminution circuits are often operated in a quasi-steady state mode, where the mills tend to move rapidly from one state to another. This makes them difficult to monitor by conventional means designed for continuous steady state processes. As a first step, process data reflecting normal operating conditions are mapped with SammonÆs algorithm. Only one feature is extracted at a time and each mapping is captured by a neural network model to allow online application. Reverse neural network models are used to reconstruct the data prior to the extraction of subsequent features from the data residuals. The ensemble of neural network models can then be used for both fault detection and identification. The approach compared favourable with both linear and non-linear principal component models. It was able to detect two simulated fault conditions both with a reliability of 100 per cent, as opposed to 57.8 per cent and 95.2 per cent detected by an approach based on the use of linear principal component analysis and 84.1 per cent and 98.0 per cent detected by an approach based on non-linear principal components extracted with auto-associative neural networks.

Fundamentally, the development of a minerals processing project is a very risky enterprise. Most mining companies do not have sufficient financial resources to undertake significant projects and hence have to undertake external financing. Indeed, most resource companies understand the high risks associated in developing their projects and therefore, wish others to share in the risks. Most merchant banks, on the other hand, are searching to find suitable resource development projects in which they can share their risk and also share a large proportion of the ærewardÆ. To resolve this issue a Feasibility Study is completed by the project developer and assessed by the merchant bank often with the assistance of an æIndependent EngineerÆ (IE) who assesses the validity of the development proposal. Generally speaking, unless the Feasibility Study has been prepared improperly, the technical aspects of most mineral projects are reasonable. Some of the more recent so-called æhigh techÆ projects are exceptions but these still do not present major technical mistakes or misconceptions. p> In most cases, the major criticism the IE presents after discussing the validity of the ore reserves focuses on production plans, capital costs and operating costs. Of these three parameters the production plan is one in which owners tend to be far too optimistic and financiers, until recent years, have not taken a position. The most critical part of the development plan is the ability of the project, as designed, to attain the required design performance and, even more critically, the ability of the owner to reach and sustain this level of production. In short, how long should the æramp-upÆ be planned to take? Financiers have become more circumspect and are now taking a more conservative view of new project performance by factoring into their project financial analysis longer periods of ramp-up, higher capital costs and higher operating costs. However, these financiers can also be part of the æproblemÆ if they become overly conservative. This paper attempts, by way of case studies available from the public arena, to identify the pitfalls the project owners can meet and possible means of avoiding the disastrous financial conundrum whereby the second or third æownerÆ is the company that reaps the rewards initially extrapolated. The paper briefly discusses this problem by referring to projects known to the author and including previous studies that looked at this very problem. It is emphasised that many of the opinions stated within the paper are strictly those of the author and could be subject of much debate.

In the steelmaking process, mold fluxes are essential for ensuring thermal insulation, refining, and the efficiency of continuous casting. Real-time understanding of the in-service composition of slags and fluxes are crucial for optimising the steel production process and improving the quality of the final product. An in situ fibre-optic Raman probe that enables the study of the structure, composition, and viscosity of molten slags and fluxes at steelmaking temperatures has been developed and demonstrated both in the lab and in foundry scale experiments. The focus of this study is on the structural, compositional, and property analysis of molten fluxes in a laboratory setting, with the aim of applying this technology for in situ monitoring during industrial production. Raman spectra were successfully collected at various temperatures from 1000°C to 1400°C in real-time and analysed using a deconvolution algorithm to isolate and quantify peaks in the spectra associated with the specific structures of molecular components in molten and solidifying flux. The research successfully combines in situ Raman spectroscopy with high-temperature viscosity data, specifically targeting CaO-CaF-SiO2-Al2O3 based mould flux systems. Specified ratios of the deconvoluted Raman peaks, such as Al-O-Al/Si-O-Si ratio, shows good correlation with the flux chemistry, while the Q3/Q0 peak ratio shows good correlation with viscosity. A ruggedised Raman probe system was also developed and demonstrated in an 80 kg induction furnace. Ultimately, the goal of this work is to demonstrate in situ slag and mould flux analysis in industrial processes, such as in the continuous caster or electric arc furnace (EAF).

Gold mining cyanide-bearing solutions can pose a risk, cause significant wildlife deaths and adverse public relations and result in non-compliance with regulatory conditions. The International Cyanide Management Code for the Manufacture, Transport and Use of Cyanide in the Production of Gold (the Code) was developed as a voluntary code to encourage industry-wide improvements in managing cyanide responsibly. The Code requires design and implementation of robust monitoring programs for compliance under the following standards of practice: 4.1, 4.4 and 4.9. A robust monitoring regime can be complicated as each processing and tailing system is different. The following systems are commonly used in Australia: carbon-in-leach (CIL); carbon-in-pulp (CIP); heap leach process ponds; tailing waste disposal systems; peripheral discharge, central discharge and in-pit disposal. Some terrestrial wildlife can be denied access by fencing tailing storage facilities (TSFs) or other physical barriers, therefore limiting wildlife interaction with cyanide-bearing tailing and solutions to mainly birds and bats. While wildlife monitoring programs for processing and TSFs contain similar core attributes, it is necessary to adapt monitoring to take into account the site-specific features of each system. These core attributes are discussed in this paper, with reference made to cyanide concentration and associated methodologies. The issue is considerably complicated if tailing solutions are deemed or discovered to be toxic to wildlife. Essentially cyanides are required to be measured to gain an understanding of the concentrations to which wildlife may be exposed. This usually equates to measuring the cyanide concentration of solutions entering and leaving a tailing system. To assess the risk to wildlife presented by tailing and heap leach systems it is necessary to monitor both the hazard (cyanide concentrations) and the exposure (live wildlife species, presence and interaction). These tasks need not be arduous and a system of simple frequent monitoring has been developed and implemented for Code compliance. The wildlife monitoring developed by Donato Environmental Services (DES) and used at mining operations departs from the industry norm. It documents observer effort, live wildlife presence, habitat and behaviour in a tailing system, as well as deaths and carcasses. A greater understanding of wildlife cyanide toxicosis associated with this monitoring approach will enable mining companies to adopt a proactive approach to significantly reduce, or preferably eliminate, the impact on wildlife and assist in gaining Code compliance.

The GDR has extensive lignite deposits at its disposal, which formed the basis for the development of an independent energy source after 1945 and which will retain their significance well beyond the year 2000 (see fig. 1). In 1946 lignite output was about 110 x 106 t. In 1985 312x 106 t was produced and in 1988 the planned output will be ca. 315 x 106 t. Thus, the domestic produc- tion of lignite covers ca. 75% of the GDR's primary energy requirements. More than 80% of the electrical energy is gener- ated by the use of lignite and about 12% by nuclear energy. In addition to this, about 18 x 106 t/a mineral oil and about 6 x 109, m3/a natural gas are imported, predominantly from the Soviet Union. The lignite deposits of the GDR are of Tertiary origin and are recovered exclusively by opencast mining. There are two large regions (fig. 2): - in the region east of the river Elbe (Cottbus/Senftenberg- "Niederlausitz") and - in the region west of the river Elbe (Halle/Leip- zig/Magdeburg). These deposits differ in geological age and conditions of depo- sition, consequently there are differences in their chemical and physical composition and, thus, in their uses. The younger Mio- cene coals of the main region in the East of the river Elbe belong to the epirogenetic type and have a low content of ash and sul- phur. Among other things, they are suitable for the production of brown coal high-temperature coke (Lauchhammer and Schwarze Pumpe). The older Oligocene coals of the Halle/Leip- zig region are bitumenous in certain areas. Therefore, they form the basis for production in low-temperature carbonizing and chemical plants. In the Halle-Magdeburg region, where the lig- nite is in contact with the underlying Zechstein subdivision, so- called "salt coals" are found.

The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of milling and flotation circuit configuration on flotation performance of platinum-bearing ore from the UG2 reef of the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. Pilot plant trials were conducted at Lonmin Platinum using a highly automated pilot plant (a floatability characterisation test rig or FCTR), with a pilot ball mill, a stirred media detritor and an ISA mill. Different milling and flotation configurations were tested, without changing the overall grind size distribution or flotation residence time from one circuit to the next. Results from the pilot plant tests indicate that staged grinding, with intermediate flotation stages, can achieve significant performance benefits in comparison to a single grind-float circuit, for an equivalent overall grind and flotation residence time. These findings are explored qualitatively, in terms of the recovery and transportation of fast, slow and non-floating platinum-bearing particles through the various milling and flotation stages, and an optimum strategy for the separation of this type of ore is explored and discussed.

Gold was discovered in the Bendigo area of Victoria in 1851 (Willman and Wilkinson, 1993), and all the early gold mining of any note involved washing (puddling) the gold out of the regolith or alluvium. The waste material from this process was a semi-fluid mixture of rock debris, soil and water, referred to as `sludge'. Puddling machines were gradually introduced to speed up the puddling process (Cole, 1994), and by 1855 an estimated 2000 machines were in the district (Anderson, 1978). In 1859 it was estimated that approximately 2 293 000 m3 of material was puddled annually by the machines on the eastern side of the goldfield, whose waste drained into Bendigo Creek and its tributary gullies. It was also estimated that after the gold was removed, approximately one-quarter of the residue/sludge consisted of the heavier, coarse-grained material which settled out fairly quickly, while the remainder, approximately 1 720 000 m3, was the fine-grained material which flowed downstream for some distance (VPP, 1859 - 60). From these figures it can be assumed that for the ten years during which this volume of puddling was maintained (1854 - 1864) over 5 700 000 m3 of gravels and sands and 17 200 000 m3 of fine-grained sludge had been discharged into and around Bendigo Creek. This was enough to cover an area of over 400 km2 to a depth of 5 cm. By 1859 the problems associated with the sheer volume of sludge being discharged were such that a Royal Commission was appointed to `Enquire into the Best Method of Removing the Sludge from the Gold Fields' (VPP, 1859 - 60). The goldfields referred to were those in the Bendigo area around the township of Sandhurst (now known as Bendigo). The Report of the Commission (VPP, 1859 - 60) stated that: `... inspection of the country bordering upon the course of the Bendigo Creek, to a distance of about fifty miles from Sandhurst . . . ' had revealed that the sludge had ' . . . filled up watercourses and flooded pasture lands . . . '. It also noted that ' . . . even on the plains, thirty or forty miles away from Sandhurst, where the sludge flows thin, and is relieved from its heavier particles, we found it baked into a perfect concrete, and in thicknesses varying up to two feet or more . . . '. The italics were used for emphasis in the original text. As it was considered unlikely that the physical evidence for such widespread inundation would have disappeared completely over the intervening 130 or so years, a project was initiated to locate any evidence of the inundation in the current landscape. If such evidence were to be found, then an estimate could be made of both its extent and its effects on the topography, drainage, and land-use of the inundated area. Extensive field work has determined that over 700 km2 to the north of Bendigo was inundated by the sludge. The area has not been uniformly covered, but has occasional `inliers' which have obviously escaped inundation by being slightly higher than the surrounding areas. Today the sludge is readily identified as a very fine-grained, hard-setting, concrete-like `capping' overlying a well-developed, well-structured, pedal horizon, or in some instances, the gravels and sands of a creek bed. The thickness of the sludge capping varies between a few centimetres and three metres (Peterson, 1996). Four quartz latite rheoignimbrite units (units I to IV) mapped in the Goboboseb Mountains have been traced to their eruptive source, the Messum intrusive complex; this is a complex multistage ring structure (18 km diameter) with well defined gabbroic, monzonitic, and syenitic intrusive phases, and a central ring zone containing mixed rhyolitic to latitic agglomerates. Three of the four quartz latite units are correlated with the upper and lower (2 units) Springbok quartz latites outcropping some 90-130 km north of McIsum. This implies minimum volumes of 300-500 km for wits I and III (Lower Springbok) and 2200-2600 km for unit IV (Upper Springbok). This latter unit is still ti 300 m thick at its outcrop limit, some 130 km from Messum. Each of the four units represents single cooling units. Lithologically, each can be divided into three zones: A basal, dark grey to black flinty or glassy zone, often with highly attenuated fiamme (ressembling flow banding); a central massive and strongly recrystallised zone; and an upper variable zone which exhibit breccias, contorted flow banding, and amygdaloidal to pumiceous clasts. Their overall characteristics tend to be intermediate between ash flows and lava flows. The rheoignimbrites are interpreted as the oproducts of dense, high temperature (950¦-1100 C) ash flows which underwent rheomorphism and lava-like flow prior to their final cooling.These large scale eruptions are related to the initial rifting of Africa and S. America, possiby in response to a major hot spot.

THE writer of this paper well realizes that the majority of engineering and metallurgieal works have from time to time evolved mechanical devices which are of great value as regards application in an operating plant.Many of these deviees would not be apparent to an individual making a brief inspection of works such as these, and it is for this reason that the writer proposes to outline a few of the devices which have been evolved by the engineering department of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd.NOVEL METHOD OF MACHINING A SPHERICAL JOINTFig. 1 represents one half of a casing for a ball-joint coupling. In the ordinary methods of boring an external spherical casing, that is with a radius bar attached to the tool rest of a lathe, there is always an error in the bore. It has two flat sides, and this error is inherent in the ordinary orthodox method and cannot be corrected. The engineers of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. undertook a job that had to be extremely accurate, and the tool shown in Fig. 2 was evolved.
