The 250 metric tonnes of gold and 360 000 metric tonnes of copper recovered from the Mt Morgan Mine in Central Queensland justify its fame. The mine ceased operation before the advent of three-dimensional computer graphical modelling of orebodies became common practice in mine planning. The Mount Morgan Mine records however remain and are the database for this study. The Mount Morgan project takes ore deposit modelling one step further by examining the relationship between grade distribution within the orebody and key geological features, as a tool for exploration and development.The Mount Morgan gold and copper mineralisation is shown to be strongly lognormally distributed. The deposit has been split into three areas, using geological boundaries, each with different geostatistical characteristics. Important features include: the spatial relationship of near-vertical, high grade shoots with a ring dyke thought to be related to the North Dyke; separation of the high grade eastern stopes from the others along the Andesite Dyke; and lack of concentrated mineralisation along the Slide Fault.Recognition of these features is useful to those currently exploring the Mount Morgan district for similar style deposits, by stressing the importance, or lack thereof, of the geological features.

Ashton Mining Ltd (Ashton) and Lynas Corporation Ltd (Lynas) have established a joint venture partnership to develop and process rare earth oxides (REOÆs) from the Mt Weld deposit in Western Australia. The deposit is located in a deeply weathered volcanic carbonatite structure that contains approximately two million tonnes of rare earth oxides at an average grade of 20 per cent REO. As part of the 1999/2000 feasibility study currently being undertaken by Ashton and Lynas, an extensive laboratory beneficiation test program was undertaken by CSIRO Minerals on diamond drill core samples from the Mt Weld orebody. The aim was to develop a flowsheet, based primarily on flotation that could be confirmed at pilot plant scale. The target concentrate grade was 52 per cent REO with a REO recovery of at least 35 per cent. Two main ore types, nominated as CZ (limonitic siltstone) and LI (nodular limonitic ironstone) were identified for separate laboratory evaluation. The lower grade LI-type ore overlies the higher grade and more extensive CZ-type ore. The majority of the work was conducted on the CZ ore; only limited testing of the LI ore was undertaken. The latter contains a clay component that will present difficulties in processing due to its poor filtering and settling characteristics. Two processing options for treatment of CZ ore were presented for pilot plant consideration. One (Option 1) includes gravity concentration prior to flotation while the other (Option 2) includes finer grinding and four stages of open circuit cleaning. The benefits of each scheme are discussed in detail. Neither has been fully optimised and the definitive flowsheet is most likely to be a hybrid of the two schemes, incorporating the best features of each. Typical metallurgical results from each scheme were final concentrate grades of 49 per cent REO, 10-16 per cent Fe2O3 and 3.2-4.8 per cent CaO. REO recoveries were above 35 per cent in both cases. Features of the processes developed by CSIRO were the inclusion of a gravity concentration stage prior to flotation, a modified flotation reagent scheme, a change in the method of feed preparation, and incorporation of magnetic separation to upgrade final flotation concentrates. Metallurgical results obtained from flotation tests on LI ore were much poorer than those obtained for CZ ore. The best rougher/scavenger result, with the limited amount of testing so far completed, was an REO grade of 32 per cent with a recovery of 28 per cent. Further work is needed to develop a viable processing route for this ore type.

Gold and silver mineralisation at the Chatree low sulfidation deposit is hosted in andesitic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks and characterised by multiple hydrothermal alteration assemblages and quartz-carbonate (chlorite-adularia) replacements, veins and breccias. The ore-bearing veins are influenced by intersecting structures and host rock lithologies. Emplacement of the host succession occurred at 250 ¦ 6 Ma (dated with laser ablation ICP-MS U-Pb zircon techniques), which was closely followed by mineralisation at 250.9 ¦ 0.8 Ma based on the analysis of adularia from coarse-grained quartz-sulfide (chalcopyrite-pyrite- sphalerite) veins using laser ablation Ar-Ar methods. The ground handling system needed for the second lift of the underground block caving operation at Northparkes Mines had to link into the existing infrastructure. Production requirements indicated that an annual output of 5 Mtpa was necessary from a depth of approximately 850 m. The shaft that serviced the first lift stopped at a depth of 520 m. This paper covers the selection of the design for the system and the factors that were taken into consideration in making the decision. It will describe the installation program and methodology and highlight areas of significance and then detail some of the issues concerning commissioning of the ground handling system.

When it comes to sampling theory, a bad sampler is a bad sampler, no matter what, and a sampler is either bad or good. It also is of critical economic importance to tell and understand the difference, especially in a metallurgical plant. In this paper, the grand principles of Sampling Theory are first recalled, then the most popular types of sample cutters for plants are critically reviewed. It is concluded that the industry has a lot of progress to make in that direction, although improvements usually pay for themselves very quickly.

Models of the evolution of the hydrothermal systems that form porphyry Cu (Mo-Au) deposits are compromised because aqueous magma-derived fluids in the ore zones of most deposits have changed from their original magmatic compositions as a result of cooling, depressurising, mineral precipitation, brine-vapour unmixing and fluid-rock reactions. However, in deep quartz-rich, sulfide-poor veins from numerous porphyry type deposits, we have identified parental fluids trapped in inclusions at near magmatic temperatures and pressures above the brine-vapour unmixing solvus. We have analysed these inclusions for bulk salinity, density, solute chemistry, helium isotopic ratios and elemental composition. These parental inclusions contain 35 - 70 volume per cent bubble, are low to moderate salinity, contain up to ten mol per cent CO2, and commonly contain a chalcopyrite daughter crystal. Our results indicate that these Cu-rich fluids transport Cu from a plutonic complex below upward into a hydrothermal system, where decompression, cooling, unmixing and water-rock reaction drive ore-mineral precipitation. Na/Cl ratios greater than one indicate that in addition to chlorine, sulfur and/or carbonate must play a key role in Cu transportation. Helium isotope ratios indicate that between ~15 and 100 per cent of helium in these fluids is mantle-derived. We suggest that in addition to He, volatiles from mafic magmas in the mantle are also likely to supply CO2, Cu and S to the fluids that form porphyry copper deposits. The geological and geotechnical conditions at the Cadia Hill Open Pit are very complex. This complexity coupled with high mining rates has required significant technical input into the design and optimisations of the pit slopes, accesses, cutbacks and scheduling. A multi-discipline team of NML engineers, geologists and external consultants has been conducting comprehensive geological and geotechnical programs in order to achieve an optimum design of the pit slopes. Extensive data collection, analysis and interpretation has led to the formation of working geotechnical models of large structures, rock masses, and back-analysed slope performance charts. The current Cadia Pit Optimisation Project focuses on the risk-and-return principle for pit design and on the integration of geotechnical, hydrogeological, mining engineering and scheduling. The risk management for pit design has also been incorporated into the short term and long-term operation of the pit mining to ensure safety and production.

Recent demand pressures for iron ore should not distract from the longer term view that intense competition in the industry has demanded technological innovation of a high order. There is a long track record of successful innovation underpinned by a solid base of scientific research and knowledge. By comment on recent developments in trucks, comminution and direct smelting, this paper suggests that innovation is still a key attribute of the industry. The spending of the minerals industry on underlying science, however, is not particularly high. By looking at other industries we can ascertain that for step change technologies, it is particularly advantageous to have a solid base of science and technology underpinning developments.

The Canadian Cordillera contains numerous classic porphyry deposits and several unusual subtypes, including the alkaline suite of porphyry Cu-Au deposits and the Tombstone magmatic suite and associated Au¦W deposits. The alkaline suite formed in collisional settings in island arcs whereas the Tombstone suite was emplaced in an active fold and thrust belt in a continental arc. In addtion to different regional settings, these suites differ in the type of underlying basement, metallogeny, and the styles of mineralization. Both magmatic suites were emplaced over short intervals, probably in response to specific tectonic events. In the case of the alkaline suite, the tectonic event promoted magmatic processes suitable for the formation of porphyry Cu-Au deposits. The tectonic environment is less well constrained for the Tombstone suite, but the result was the formation of distinctive porphyry and intrusion-related Au¦W deposits.

SINCE 1952, when Elliott et a/ first applied the Sherwood correlation for flooding in chemical absorption towers to blast furnaces numerous investigators throughout the world have followed their example and much research effort has been spent to tighten the correlation and recently to extend investigation of flooding to side gas entry conditions. The widespread use of the Sherwood concept of flooding has been such that even the word itself has become an integral part of blast furnace nomenclature. The evidence for the applicability of Sherwood's relationship has been that the flooding limits calculated from blast furnace parameters lie approximately on the Sherwood line. However, the values of many of the variables for the blast furnace calculation are only estimates and at first sight one may wonder at such 'close' coincidence when some of the estimated parameters entering the Sherwood correlation are raised to the power of three or more, as for the bed porosity and the liquid surface tension. It is felt that the explanation of this result lies in the logarithmic: nature of the plot and/or the fortuitous can- cellation of the errors of the estimates in the calculations coupled with the fact that blast furnace fluid ratios lie within a very narrow range of values. The foregoing considerations should in their own right place doubt on the correctness of the Sherwood type flooding correlation applied to the blast furnace. Additional doubt regarding the existence of the Sherwood type flooding in the furnace has been cast by the results obtained in the Tokyo University experimental blast furnace. From the reasoning of both Standish and Colquhoun (p. 20) and Warner (p. 23) it is deduced that flooding in the traditional sense will only normally occur in the upper bosh (somewhere near the mantle), following softening as discussed by Palella et a/ on p. 75, and flooding in that zone is likely to result in furnace irregularity. On the other hand, the concept developed by Warner of slag hold-up above the raceways as a stable phenomenon not affecting furnace regularity is a process unique to the blast furnace and is not described by the Sherwood flooding theory. Recognising the considerable practical implications of slag hold-up above the raceways, this note further explores the physical process of slag hold-up. We envisage that bed of coke above the raceways in almost all blast furnaces would contain some slag held up by the gas pressure gradient. In general the slag would be contained in a ring and gas would bubble through in its ascent through the furnace. The force supporting this slag is the pressure gradient and obviously -much of the blast pressure is dissipated in supporting this structure.

Kinetics of bubble-particle interaction, surface hydrophobicity and interfacial phenomena in sulfide mineral flotation are discussed in this paper. Results of the measurements of a bubble and mineral induction time (IT) and detachment force (DF), vacuum of bubble evolution (VE) and mineral floatability are discussed for pyrite, galena, chalcocite and chalcopyrite. Natural wetting and wetting induced by xanthates with different lengths of alkyl chains are examined. Experiments show the existence of several maxima of hydrophobicity on dependences of pH and electrochemical potential. These maxima are attributed as the reflection of mineral surface heterogeneity due to xanthate adsorption and the presence of cationic and anionic centres with uncompensated positive and negative charges. These charges can be neutralised by both regulation pH and applied potential. The aim of this paper is to evaluate a thickness of the rupturing film and to estimate how long the bubble-mineral interactions are according to the experimental values of IT, in order to develop a procedure for comparing of the results of DF and atomic force measurements in the same dimensionality, and to compare the results of the experimental studies on the wettability of sulfides with those predicted by the models of physics of capillarity.

The Mount Gibson goidmine is located at the southern end of the Retaliation greenstone belt within the Murchison Province, approximately 300 km northeast of Perth, Western Australia. Economic gold mineralization occurs in the upper part of a Tertiary lateritic surface; its ultimate source presumably being Archaean greenstones. Gold is present in the laterite profile over a distance of 4 km in four separate prospects, from north to south, Mount Gibson Well, Midway, Orion and Tobias Find, the two last constituting the Mount Gibson mine. The area has'low relief. A low ridge to the west of the mineralized zone is formed mainly of rubble with minor outcrops of mafic volcanic and intrusive rocks. The terrain slopes gently to the northeast, and the maximum relief, in the vicinity of the mineralization, is about 20 m. The weathering profile comprises, from the surface: (i) soil, windblown sand or colluvium (thin), (ii) laterite; hardcap (including ferricrete and lesser silcrete and calcrete) is overlain by loose nodules and pisolites, and passes downwards into a mottled zone of variably ferruginized clay, (iii) clay; mainly pale brown, cream or yellow in colour, but in places contains relic quartz veins or dark ferruginous zones, (iv) clay with fragments of altered rock; normally grey to pale green in colour but sometimes includes an oxidized iron-rich horizon just above the weathered/fresh rock interface, (v) bedrock. The complete profile varies from 10-100 m thick, averaging 20 m. Zone (ii) is commonly 3-5 m thick. Loose pisolites of this zone fill cavities in the massive ironstone left by former tree roots, and cover irregular depressions which may represent former stream courses. Samples, representing 3 m intervals down the holes, have been collected from cuttings taken from rotary drill-holes along each of four traverses; one traverse at each-of the northern prospects and two traverses in the Orion part of the mine area. These samples have been submitted for X-ray diffraction analysis and for chemical analysis for a wide range of elements. Bedrock lithologies have been determined from microscope studies of bottom-of-hole chips.

Zeolites are potential carriers of slow release fertilisers due to their unique phenomenon for salt occlusion. A comparative study was performed on the capacities of potassium nitrate (KNO3) occlusion in molten KNO3 treated synthetic 4A and 13X zeolite molecular sieves with main channel sizes of 0.41 x 0.41 nm and 0.74 x 0.74 nm respectively. The results show that in a laboratory setting, the treated zeolite 4A contained 13.57 per cent of occluded KNO3 and the treated zeolite 13X did not contain any. This was confirmed by the regular release of K+ and NO3- during washing both treated mixed samples with water and by their IR spectra and TG analysis. There are also changes of the relative intensities of peaks in X-ray diffractograms of both treated zeolite samples. K+ release from molten-KNO3 treated zeolites in deionised water and simulated soil solution shows that release of K+ from KNO3 occluded in zeolite 4A are slow and steady. Proper size fit between the channel size of zeolites pore and the size of K+-NO3- ion pair of KNO3 is the decisive factor for zeolites to occlude KNO3.

This present paper deals with the fundamental study of the separation of fine cassiterite and quartz by liquid-liquid extraction using iso-octane as an oil phase, dodecylamine acetate (DAA) as a collector, and sodium chloride as a depressant. With regard to the distribution of fine cassiterite and quartz between oil and aqueous phases, the effect of DAA has been investigated in terms of pH, DAA and NaCl concentrations, zeta potential, and adsorption density. From the results of the experimental work, a maximum recovery of cassiterite in the oil phase was obtained with pH around 6.0, DAA concentration of 1.0 x 10-5 mole/litre, and NaCl addition of 0.1 mole/litre. In these conditions of liquid-liquid extraction, most of the fine quartz remained in the aqueous phase. Thus it was found that NaCI was an effective depressant for fine quartz under optimum conditions. A series of separation tests by liquid-liquid extraction was then conducted for the mixed samples (6.0 per cent Sn) of cassiterite and quartz. By a single separating process, the per cent of recovery of cassiterite in the oil phase was about 92 per cent with a grade of 27 per cent Sn. The same results could also be obtained by using kerosene in place of iso-octane as the oil phase.

Hydrothermal mineralisation localised around such structures testifies to their importance as conduits for fluid flow. Mesh structures are most commonly developed in situations approximating bulk pure shear but predominantly simple shear meshes also occur. They appear to develop through the infiltration of pressurised fluids into a heterogeneous rock mass with varying material properties. In some circumstances, mesh formation appears to be a precursor to the development of major throughgoing faults. Mesh formation generally involves hydrofracturing (Pf> a3, at least locally) and the condition Pf - 63 to be maintained for the mesh to remain a high permeability conduit, requiring fluid overpressuring at other than shallow depths in extensional-transtensional regimes. The volumetric character of earthquake swarm activity appears to result from the passage of hydrothermal fluids through mesh structures, representing a form of distributed fault-valve action along suprahydrostatic hydraulic gradients arising from magmatic intrusion, compaction overpressuring, metamorphic dewatering, etc.

Aspects of the formation, decomposition and acid solubility of zinc ferrite were examined to find potential ways of increasing the recovery of zinc from a calcination process of mineral concentrates. Ferrite can begin to form within 2 hours at 450¦C. while complete reaction can occur after 35 minutes at 700¦C. The nature of the starting materials has a pronounced effect on the rate of formation and below 700¦C. ZnSO4 and Fe2O3 proved to be the least reactive of the materials investigated. It is possible that iron in a mineral admixed h sphalerite can be converted to a relatively inactive form, however, it does not seem possible to prevent zince f formation when iron is in the sphalerite lattice. At the two temperatures examined, 650¦C. and 700¦C, the presence of SO2 in the atmosphere accelerate .e formation of ferrite. Prolonged exposure to such atmospheres, however, caused the ferrite to decompose to ZnSO4 and Fe203. The optimum temperature for decomposition was 650¦C. and it was virtually complete within 2 hours in an atmosphere of 10% SO2 in air. Zinc ferrite was also decomposed by CO at low concentrations, and by heating with limestone at 1000¦C. for at least 2 hours. The solubility of zinc ferrite in acid was influenced by the starting materials used. As both the reaction temperature and the time at temperature increased the acid solubility decreased. An understanding of the way that solutes are transported in mining or natural environments is essential to the development of sound strategies for managing waste disposal. Research on miscible pollutant movement in unsaturated porous media is carried out both experimentally and numerically. Results of numerical modelling are obtained by solving the groundwater flow equation and the solute transport equation. The finite element method is employed and comparisons between simulation results and experimental data are found in remarkable agreement.

The Lennard Shelf is an Upper Devonian carbonate reef complex striking northwest for 350 km along the northeast margin of the Canning Basin. Numerous small Mississippi Valley type (MVT) Pb-Zn prospects occur within this belt, including the Wagon Pass prospect, located 105 km east of Derby in the Napier Range. At Wagon Pass, the base of the Upper Devonian sequence is a cobbly, dolomitic sandstone, the Van Emmerick Conglomerate. This is conformably overlain by the Frasnian to Famennian Pillara cycle Lower Napier Formation fore-reef deposits. These are characterized by red algal wackestones and terrigenous stylo- bedded packstones, with common dolomitization. The conformably overlying Famennian Nullara cycle contains a classic reefal assemblage, consisting of flat lying Nullara Limestone back-reef, fore-stepping massive Windjana Reef, and steep basinward dipping Upper Napier Formation marginal slope. The Nullara cycle is not dolomitized. The Wagon Pass mineralization is hosted by Lower Napier Formation dolomite. Mineral- ization consists of complex intergrowths and semi-massive assemblages of sphalerite and galena, with subordinate pyrite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, bornite, digenite, covellite and bravoite. Ore textures include granular and colloform. Gangue minerals are dolomite and very fine grained green chloritic clay. Although mineralization commonly occurs as reticulate fracture fillings, its overall distribution is stratabound. Ore paragenesis involved early "diagenetic" dolomitization, followed by breccia formation with chloritic and granular dolomite matrices. Main stage galena-sphalerite mineralization then occurred, accompanied by pervasive chloritization of silty units. Ore genesis was probably related to basin-derived "oil field" brines, with open space textures in the mineralization quite comparable to textures seen in Canning Basin dolomitic hydrocarbon reservoirs. Fluid inclusions in the host dolomite have typical MVT homogenization temperatures of 70-1150 C, and contain minor organic phases. The Van Emmerick Conglomerate, with its high porosity, dolomitization and weak Pb-Zn anomalism, was probably the aquifer for the mineralizing brines. Access of ore solutions to the Wagon

The Norseman-Wiluna Belt (Fig.1) is a richly mineralized (production 1900 tonnes Au), Archaean greenstone belt, up to 800km long and 200km wide, which forms the major part of the Eastern Goldfields Province within the Yilgam Block. The Belt evolved ca. 2700 Ma ago as an oblique-slip mobile belt between flanking portions of an older greenstone terrane. Volcano-sedimentary successions in the Belt represent two distinct tectono-stratigraphic associations. Sequences of metamorphosed caic-alkaline intermediate to silicic volcanic rocks interlayered with tholeiitic basalts probably represent the remains of a dissected Archaean volcanic arc (or arcs), and sequences composed dominantly of ultramafic to mafic lavas and intrusions, with minor interflow tuffaceous, sulphidic or cherty sediments are interpreted as remnants of the floor of an ensialic marginal basin (Barley and Groves, 1988). Ultramafic volcanism at Kambalda has been dated at 2692 ¦ 2 Ma (Claoue-Long et al., 1986). The dominantly volcanic associations are locally overlain by coarse clastic sedimentary succes- sions. The Belt is also typified by major north- to north-northwest-striking fault systems, shear zones, and tectonic lineaments, many of which are traceable for more than 300km. As well as defining the boundaries of the belt, these structures have accomodated much of the regional strain and acted as conduits for hydrothermal fluids during deformation, metamorphism and mineralization. As a result, most of the epigenetic gold deposits in the Belt occur in subsidiary structures related to these fault systems (Eisenlohr et al., 1988). Deformation involved oblique compression resulting in a closely spaced network of low-angle faults (thrusts) as well as upright folds and oblique- to strike-slip faults (Archibald, 1987; Veamcombe et al., 1988). This was accompanied by regional metamorphism and granitoid emplacement. At Kambalda, regional deformation and metamorphism were synchronous with the emplacement of the Kambalda Granodiorite which has been dated at 2662 ¦ 4 Ma (Hill and Compston, 1986), approximately 30 Ma after volcanism.The tectonic history and style of deformation of the Norseman-Wiluna Belt are similar to those of Phanerozoic oblique- slip mobile belts at continental margins, which are also a major source of hydrothermal gold mineralization.
