The constraints in university courses are lack of hours, high cost of scientific equipment, and poor availability of suitably experienced staff. These have forced the balance away from practical work and towards more theory. Labelling of individuals as either practical, or academic, does not help the inter- change of staff between industry and univer- sities that is necessary to balance idealism and realism. Practical men who do return to universities may lose seniority and find that industry is reluctant to have them back. Academics who specialise too long may concentrate on their research to the exclusion of basic material. It is difficult to operate pilot scale plants in universities because of lack of time, and obsolescent equipment. Small grants from industry might enable tests to be run in research laboratories such as at C.S.I.R.O.. Within universities there may be a need for greater interchange of students among depart- ments, aided by the absence of weighted student unit measurements, as suggested by Aus.I.M.M. and A.M.I.C.

Interest in mineral sand mining in the south west corner of Western Australia began in the late 1940's and significant production commenced in 1956. Early land use conflicts arose because of conservation implications (Ludlow tuart forest), expanded to include post-mining rehabilitation requirements (the Wonnerup mine near Busselton) and today include some agricultural/mining disputes. These latter conflicts are largely caused by the need for mining companies to secure longer-term reserves. To date, deposits containing mineral valued at A$440 million have been sterilized and are unlikely to become available in the future. There is additional pressure being placed on presently available reserves and a pessimistic picture could be drawn, whereby the southwest mineral sands industry ceases to exist by the year 2010. However, sensible land use planning, the support of policticians and the community, and responsible attitudes towards compensation and rehabilitation could, in combination, see the industry maintain significant mineral output until the middle of the 21st century. Examples of deposits sterilized by adverse land use will be given.

The nickel refinery at Yabulu consumes an average of 118,000 kg/h of low pressure steam in stripping operations to-recover ammonia and carbon dioxide from product liquor and ore tailings streams. The steam used in the stripping operations is produced from the 25 MW power generation plant at the refinery. The back pressure on the non condensing steam turbines is maintained at 60 kPa.Studies have been carried out to determine the optimum amount of steam required to be generated for stripping operations. When steam production is increased, the product liquor flow from thewashing thickeners can be increased. This results in improved washing efficiency of the thickeners and therefore improves the plant nickel recovery. A computer thickener wash model was used to predict nickel recoveries at varying steam consumption rates.The studies have shown that in most plant situations, it is not economical to-generate more steam than that already available from existing power production.The studies also highlighted the necessity to use all steam generated from power production at all times to maintain maximum nickel recovery.

Mining projects draw together stakeholders with various degrees of experience in managing and assessing financial risk. When this risk is not fully appreciated or quantified, the potential for making decisions not suited to investor requirements is significantly increased. A feasibility study provides key information on project development potential, requiring detailed technical investigations with thorough financial analysis. Centaur Mining and Exploration (CME) owned and operated Cawse Nickel Operations (CNO), one of three Australian projects to develop and process vast amounts of near surface nickel resources. A technical ædue-diligenceÆ and æbankable feasibility studyÆ confirmed the large resource base, newly applied yet tested technology and relatively low unit costs would produce nickel in the lower half of industry operating costs. A number of production variables including capital requirements, delayed start-up, nickel grade, processing, maintenance and product output were outside the feasibility estimate. This was combined with exchange rate fluctuations and lower Ni prices. The inability to generate adequate cash flow and service debt repayments ultimately led to receivership and liquidation of all assets. Following the sale of CentaurÆs gold and nickel divisions, $A 784 million remained outstanding to creditors. This paper aims to define key issues leading to CNOÆs collapse by reviewing feasibility parameters, valuation methodology and project development. Some methods of assessing project viability are discussed with the aim of increasing stakeholder risk awareness.

Sampling and e.m.f. probes were used in the liquid flow from the blast furnace and in the forehearth to evaluate the performance of the copper smelting system at E.R. & S. Significant variations in temperature, oxygen potential and copper content with slag depth and with position in the forehearth indicated that convective currents were causing considerable stirring in the forehearth. This was attributed to temperature fluctuations in the stream from the blast furnace, which resulted in colder slag being underlain by hotter matte. Tracer tests in the feed to the smelter and in the feed to the forehearth revealed considerable holdup of material in the plant and confirmed that the forehearth involved small scale turbulence but little large scale mixing. The results indicated that the copper content of slag continuously tapped from the forehearth could be lowered by at least 0.15% if better settling could be achieved and means of attaining this are discussed. As part of the investigation the recovery of copper from spent refractory bricks recycled through the smelter was evaluated. It was found that the recovery was high but it seems likely that the brick material is partly responsible for a build up of solid material in the forehearth.

Technological advancements in mineral processing have increased the feasibility of refining low-grade ores. Because of this progression and continual depletion of high-grade ore deposits, much larger volumes of waste material are produced. At the same time, increasing environmental legislation and cost competitiveness dictate that these wastes be disposed of in a manner that is both environmentally acceptable and economically viable. To achieve these criteria, many mineral processing industries are dewatering waste streams in order to reduce the volume of tailings and increase water and reagent recovery. The subsequent dry disposal of these highly concentrated mineral tailings requires a thorough understanding of the effects of dewatering on the flow characteristics. Dry disposal represents a paradigm shift in engineering. The tailings are engineered to suit the disposal requirements, as opposed to engineering a facility to accommodate the tailings. It is therefore important to understand how the material properties and operational parameters can be modified to produce the desired tailings flow and deposition characteristics. As concentrated suspensions usually exhibit non-Newtonian behaviour, determination of the disposal plant operating conditions requires a thorough understanding of the rheological characteristics of the material. The implementation and optimisation of dry disposal methods involves three concurrent and interdependent rheological studies to determine:the concentration required to achieve the optimum spreading and drying characteristics of the tailings once deposited; the optimum conditions for pipeline transport; and the feasibility of dewatering the slurry to the required concentration. The paper presents an overview of the issues pertinent to management of the flow properties and processing of dewatered waste streams.

Permian ultramafic and associated rocks form a belt in East Nelson and contain widespread, but minor, chromite and copper mineralisation and some mining was carried out last century. Since mining ceased, about 1910, little mapping of the belt has been carried out although its origin has been debated vigorously. Recently it has been inferred to form part of a ophiolite sequence, which has been tectonically disrupted to form a melange, and several 'plate -tectonic' models have been proposed. Mapping in the central part of the belt has shown that mTlanges are to the east of the ophiolite sequence. Faulting is widespread so that in anyone section part of the sequence may be absent. Some of the faulting is difficult to recognise and probably took place during or soon after the sequence accumulated. Other faulting is clearly of Cenozoic age and includes major NNE striking faults, with large horizontal displacement, and approximately east-west striking faults with almost entirely vertical movement. The writer agrees that 'plate tectonics' could provide an acceptable explanation for the origin of the ophiolite sequence but the models so far proposed do not take into account the nature and field relationships of the rock units present. Copper Mineralisation is largely controlled by the younger faults, particularly those striking about north-east, and is largely confined to the western part of the ultramafic rocks particularly where slivers of the volcanics of the adjacent Lee River Group are enclosed. Mineralisation, along NNE striking shear zones, has recently been found in the volcanics some distance from the ultramafic rocks. The chromite mineralization is in the form of primary layering in the basal part of the ultramafic belt although in places it has been concentrated into lenses probably during serpentinisation.

Phu Bia Mining Ltd, a subsidiary of Pan Australian Resources Ltd owns and operates the Phu Kham copper concentrator located in the Xaysomboun District, Lao PeopleÆs Democratic Republic. Construction and commissioning of the 12 Mt/a copper concentrator and associated facilities was undertaken by Ausenco Ltd and handed over to Phu Bia Mining Ltd in April, 2008. The first copper concentrate was produced in April 2008 and the ship carrying the first shipment of copper concentrate set sail 27 July 2008. Nameplate mill throughput was reached in August, 2008 when 1 020 000 dmt of ore was treated in the milling and flotation circuit. The Cu-Au mineralisation is contained in skarn and stockwork mineralisation and is interpreted as a distal expression of a conventional porphyry copper-gold system. Copper mineralisation is principally in the form of chalcopyrite with lesser bornite. Gold occurs as small grains, typically associated with copper minerals. In the upper portions of the orebody, oxidation and water table movements have resulted in near surface leaching of the copper and below the leached zone, supergene enrichment resulted in chalcocite mineralisation. The circuit operates with a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) û ball mill circuit, feeding a bank of OK200 rougher cells. Rougher concentrate is reground in an IsaMill prior to entering a cleaner circuit consisting of three stages of cleaning and one stage of cleaner scavenging. The concentrate typically assaying 24 per cent Cu and 6 - 7 g/t Au is hauled for over 1000 km across the border to the Port of Sriracha in Thailand, and stocked in sheds at the wharf from which it is shipped to various Asian smelters. This paper discusses the successful commissioning and ramp up to design tonnage and metallurgical performance. In addition, a program to optimise both the comminution and flotation circuit is detailed with reference to grinding efficiency, flotation residence time and size by size mineral recovery.

Mineral valuation may appear to be a special field of financial valuation when in fact it is a subset of general investment decision theory. The only significant difference in mineral valuation is that in the case of valuing an on-going mineral asset, ie a mine, often there is no initial capital outlay involved. One is required to determine what the mineral asset as it stands is worth. But this is the same problem as determining the maximum one could pay today and not incur a loss over the life of the asset. In other words one needs to determine the Net Present Value (NPV) of the asset. The two most widely used discounted cash flow methods, NPV and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) came of age with the rapid adoption of the personal computer and spreadsheet programs. The two methods are directly related as the IRR is a special case of NPV. NPV measures the absolute increase in real wealth that can be expected from a certain investment, which makes it particularly suitable for mineral asset valuation, but ignores the efficiency of the investment. In contrast, IRR gives the expected efficiency of the investment but ignores the increase in wealth aspect. IRR has two serious theoretical weaknesses; multiple IRR's and a very rigid assumption about the rate of return of reinvested proceeds, plus if no initial equity expenditure is involved there is no IRR. The choice of the ""hurdle"" rate can also be a problem and in certain circumstances one can obtain different rankings of mutually exclusive projects using IRR and NPV. Although NPV and IRR supposedly measure financial risk, in fact they only address a very narrow area of risk, namely the time value of money given the real discount rate. They side step the issue of what the real discount rate should be and varying degrees of risk. The classical way to establish the real discount rate is to use the weighted average cost of capital.

In late 2004 a large-scale evaluation of a new suite of tools for semi-automated core logging was carried out in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. Known as HyLoggingÖ Systems, these combine rapid hyperspectral mapping of mineralogy and very high resolution digital imaging of cores and chips in their original containers. The resulting data is very information-rich and provides information about host rock, alteration and regolith mineralogy. This, in turn, can be used to test geological models about fluid/rock interactions, ore system architecture, ore feed characterisation and generally improve the objectivity of the normally manual and variable logging process. Results were obtained from the Kanowna Belle and St Ives gold deposits in the Kalgoorlie region, as well as numerous holes from across Western Australia stored in the Kalgoorlie Core Library. At the Kanowna Belle gold deposit critical spatial trends in the proportions of white mica, the chemistry and species of those micas, the presence of selected carbonate species and the absence of chlorite proximal to ore zones have all contributed to improved ore deposit understanding. Significantly many of these trends are not discernible to the naked eye, nor easily quantified, previously, across many thousands of metres of core from separate drill holes. At St Ives, the HyLoggerÖ was able to show that low-Al (phengite) and high-Al (paragonite to muscovite) white micas are spatially associated with D3 foliation zones that are proximal and distal to Au mineralisation, respectively. D3 foliation zones are also associated with the depletion of metamorphic chlorite and amphibole, and their replacement with biotite, relative to unaltered mafic host-rocks. The HyLogged GSWA drill holes yielded mineralogical characterisation of classic deposits, including Kambalda (Ni), Fimiston (Au), Teutonic Bore (Cu, Zn, Ag), Black Swan (Ni) and Hannans (Au), illustrating a wide variety of mineralogical trends due to both host lithologies, previously unrecorded lithological subdivisions, and alteration patterns. During 2005 a unique thermal infrared HyLogger was developed to map the important remaining silicates, such as feldspars, quartz, olivines, pyroxenes and garnets. This was successfully tested on a 9000 m subset of the same cores as the earlier study. Interpretation has focused, in particular, on silicification, albitisation, and the mineralogy of several high-grade, less hydrous deposits.

Emulsion explosives are a common industrial explosive and have a non-ideal detonation behaviour. The detonation performance for a given product changes with the charge diameter, ground conditions, con?nement and density. The burning process of an emulsion explosive has been modelled with an ignition and growth model in the LS-DYNA code. The parameters in the burning rate function are calibrated by the detonation velocities and the detonation front curvature radii from emulsion explosive tests. A Perl program was developed for an efficient estimation of the parameters, and the results show that the calibrated parameters can predict both detonation velocities and the detonation front curvatures.CITATION:Yi, C, Nyberg, U and Johansson, D, 2015. The dissolution of carbon from carbonaceous materials into molten iron is a key step in various ironmaking operations. For example, in new direct smelting processes, carbon in the form of coal is injected into the molten iron bath, which leads to the dissolution of carbon. In foundry operations, typical recarburizer materials can range from high purity graphite to chars. The dissolution performance of these" materials is critical to the operation and could dictate the efficiency and economics of the process.Dissolution kinetics has been studied by various investigators to explain the influence of melt conditions and carbon type (Sahajwalla et al, 1994; Shigeno, Tokuda, and Ohtani, 1985; Orsten and Oeters; 1988; Ganguly and Reid, 1992; Wright and Taylor, 1993). The influence of melt sulphur content on the dissolution kinetics has been characterised (Sahajwalla et al, 1994), with sulphur retarding the rate of carbon dissolution. The carbon dissolution from different sources is seen to vary significantly even under similar melt conditions. This observation has been explained by investigators on the basis of the varying ash content present in the carbonaceous materials. However, ash content alone cannot account for the variability in dissolution kinetics reported in other studies. One such study is presented below.In a recent study (Sahajwalla et al, 1994), pulverised carbonaceous materials were injected into the molten iron bath and the" dissolution kinetics was established. The dissolution of graphite and glassy carbon, which contain almost 100 per cent carbon, was seen to be significantly different when the molten iron contained sulphur. The influence of melt sulphur content was explained on the basis of different wetting behaviour observed.Importantly, the study showed that even pure carbon sources dissolved at significantly different rates. Hence, their performance could not be explained on the basis of ash content.The key difference between graphite and glassy carbon is in their atomic structure. Graphite is highly ordered whereas glassy carbon has relatively poor ordering in its atomic structure. This study showed that the atomic structure in carbonaceous materials can have a significant effect on their dissolution performance.The focus of the present investigation which stems from the past study described above (Sahajwalla et al, 1994), is to investigate the influence of atomic structure of carbonaceous materials on their dissolution into Fe-C-S melts.The specific objective of this study is to determine the relationship between dissolution kinetics and crystallographic character of carbon sources. In order to accomplish this goal, a range of different materials representing a spectrum of carbon sources have been chosen for the investigation. These materials include brown coal char, two types of Auscarb (A and B), and commercial graphite. Auscarb is prepared by calcining Auscoal at 1000°C. Auscoal is made from chemically cleaned Australian coals (Bowling, Chandler and Waugh, 1990). Part 1 of this paper details the dissolution performance of the materials studied, while Part 11 describes the X-ray diffraction study. The relationship between the atomic structural dimension and dissolution rate constant is discussed in light of the results obtained.

Systematic field evaluation of known gold and clay occurrences in South Korea has led to the recognition and discovery of both high and low sulphidation gold-silver epithermal systems. These are associated with Cretaceous acid-intermediate volcanic centres in the southern parts of the peninsula. The high sulphidation deposits such as Seongsan and Kohung are characterised by pervasive silica-alunite-dickite-pyrophyllite alteration with anomalous arsenic geochemical signatures. Gold mineralisation is associated with fine grained marcasite and pyrite. A low sulphidation quartz vein system observed at the Tongyoung mine comprises multistage colloform banded quartz-carbonate assemblages, with minor manganese and base metals. Gold and silver occur as electrum and tellurium minerals. Some deposits such as Gasado and Dogcheon display both high and low sulphidation alteration assemblages. Early pervasive silica-alunite-pyrophyllite alteration caps formed by acid fluids with a significant magmatic component, occur above cryptocrystalline colloform banded vein systems. The quartz vein stage hosts the precious metal mineralisation and appears to have been deposited by later neutral fluids generated in part through mixing with meteroric water.

The determination of shear strength parameters for the spoil material plays a crucial role in the assessment of a dump’s stability; nevertheless, their evaluation necessitates laborious laboratory experiments. In order to address this issue, Simmons and McManus (2004) formulated a framework that serves as a foundation for categorising spoils according to their distinctive shear strength parameters based on observable and tactile characteristics. This framework, previously identified as the ‘BHP Mitsubishi Alliance Coal (BMAC) Spoil Shear Strength Framework’, is now recognised as the ‘CoalSpoil’ framework. The spoil characterisation provided by the CoalSpoil framework offers benefits but is not without limitations. The examination of these attributes in the field is a time-consuming task that demands expertise. Subjectivity arises in the spoil characterisation when attributes straddle the line between two categories, such as delineating matrix-supported and framework-supported fabric structures. To enhance consistency in the spoil characterisation process, minimising human intervention is crucial to mitigate bias, classification errors, and safety risks. This study seeks to achieve this aim by introducing image-assisted and automated methods for spoil characterisation.

The St George orebodies are situated within the tectonically disrupted eastern limb of the Boogardie Syncline.Highly disturbed rafts of banded chert formations occur within a sequence of felsic volcanic tuffs. The chert forms the hostrock for the gold mineralization.The gold distribution within the irregular and narrow banded chert formations is erratic and patchy. The average gold content of the two orebodies is between 3 - 4 g/t Au.Economic mining of these relative small, irregular and low grade St. George orebodies can be carried out by using a highly selective mining method.The highly selective mining method uses an excavator as the principle mining tool. Blasting, breaking and loading of the rocks is done in a different way than by using a front-end loader as with the conventional mining method. Simple, and therefore cheaper, blasting breaks the rocks and lifts them up without major displacements.

Study on Preparation and Gel Performance of High Purity Montmorillonite In order to research the colloidal and thixotropic performance of the inorganic gel prepared by high purity montmorillonite, this study uses the moderate grade bentonite ores from Weifang (China) as raw material. Two-stage hydrocyclone classification was applied to obtain the high purity montmorillonite with its content of 94.8 per cent. In contrast to other methods of montmorillonite purification, two-stage purification by hydroclone has the advantages of larger throughput and easily achieving auto-control in industry, and purified products with different montmorillonite content can be obtained by this method. And then the inorganic gel was prepared by the prepared high purity montmorillonite and its colloidal and thixotropic performances by measuring the flowability and thixotropy were further studies. Research results show that the inorganic gel has plastic body liquidity, the viscosity decreases with the increase of the shear rate, the static and dynamic shearing stress values are 33.98 Pa and 91.89 Pa, respectively, and the thixotropic value is 95.2 dyne+s/cm2, which indicates that it has preferable colloidal and thixotropic performance. Montmorillonite inorganic gel prepared by bentonite with high montmorillonite content and low-layer charge has better gel performance.

Large scale cut and fill mining in narrow silver-lead-zinc orebodies began at Mount Isa in 1964. Initially each orebody was one stope and access was via raises from the level above. Upholing was the principal mining method, although flatbacking was employed where ground conditions were more difficult. Developments since have included access via footwall inclines and connection of all stopes with major crosscuts. Flatbacking is the principal method. The most recent cut and fill operation is now fully mechanised using drilling jumbos, rockbolting jumbos and load-haul-dump units. Improved ground support and drilling and blasting practices have enhanced safety, recovery and productivity in all cut and fill operations.

The treatment plant of the Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie Ltd. is situated on the Oroya South Lease, on the Eastern edge of the Kalgoorlie Golden Mile.It was designed and erected by Messrs. Alex. Stewart and Company, in consultation with Mr. Harry Hey, and was completed in November, 1937.Its original capacity was 9,000 tons of all-sulphide ore per calendar month, l?ut the plant was extended in October, 1939, to treat 13,000 to 14,000 tons per month of mixed sulphide and oxidised ore.Recovery of the gold is accomplished by cyanide treatment, followed by flotation of the cyanided residue, roasting and cyanidation of flotation concentrate and precipitation of the gold from the cyanide solutions. In the cyanide section, the crushed ore is finely ground in cyanide ,solution and the pulp is agitated to dissolve further gold. It is then thickened and filtered. In the flotation section, this filter residue is conditioned with S02 gas and a pyrite-gold concentrate recovered by flotation.This concentrate is roasted and then cyanided.KALGOORLIE ORE DEPOSIT.The Kalgoorlie ore deposit occurs within a wide area of Pre-Cambrian rocks, ,and consists essentially of two series of basic igneous rocks known as the older greenstone series (calc schist) and the younger greenstone series (quartzdolerite- greenstone) . The Brolga deposit is a Ni-Co enriched laterite, formed over intensly serpentinised peridotites of the Marlborough Block. Basement lithologies at Brolga consist predominantly of serpentinised dunite, with lesser massive serpentinite shear, gabbro and harzburgite. Investigation of the deposit has defined 17 different varieties of saprolite, ferralite (limonite), and ferricrete. Different combinations of these varieties form three distinct lateritic associations, the Hard, Soft and Dyke Associations. Recognition of key textural and mineralogical features in each association, an understanding of basement geology, and an awareness of current climatic conditions, suggest that: 1. both the Hard and Soft Associations have formed under relatively dry climatic conditions; 2. the Soft Association reflects much poorer groundwater drainage than the Hard Association; and 3. the Dyke Association has formed from a gabbroic basement, and has also been affected by restricted groundwater drainage, caused by poorly permeable marginal serpentinite shears.

Dust emissions by blasting are of concern to both mine operators and surrounding communities. The quantity of dust produced, and the effects of its dispersal depend substantially on geological, blasting and meteorological conditions. This paper provides details of methods used to quantify the amount of dust produced after collecting samples using high volume dust samplers, and the difficulties encountered in satisfactory dust sampling and quantification. Also described are practical dust reduction methods by using water filled ampoules and water filled balls.
