The Golden Blocks Goldfield is located in the Slaty Creek area,North West Nelson, about 20 km west of Collingwood. Alluvial gold was discovered in Slaty Creek in 1861. Gold was mined from quartz veins up to 1.5 m thick at nine mines from the 1890s until the closure of the Aorangi Mine in 1911. Total production from the Golden Blocks Goldfield is estimated at 46 000 ounces of gold. The Aorangi Mine was the largest mine, with a recorded production of 27 978 ounces of gold at an average grade of 36 g/t. Quartz veins containing gold and sparse sulphide mineralisation occur in a slightly metamorphosed, complexly deformed over-turned sequence of Lower Ordovician sandstones and shales. Primary gold mineralisation is associated with intensely deformed zones that occur near or at carbonaceous shale and sandstone contacts. Some eighty-five percent of all gold production (39 000 ounces) came from four mines confined to the stratigraphically lowest, most widespread shale unit. The quartz veins exhibit textures consistent with a hydraulic fracturing mode of vein formation with fissure infill vein types predominating over replacement textures. Stylolites of carbonaceous material and recrystallization features within the veins suggest multiple phases of deformation. The lack of wall rock alteration, and low primary fluid inclusion temperatures of 200¦ - 265¦ indicate that the ore fluids were associated with a low temperature epithermal system. A model consistent with similar mineralisation styles observed in Ordovician sediments from Pacific Rim occurrences is presented. The high grades (up to 100 g/t) mined from the upper levels of several mines suggests supergene enrichment processes associated with the Upper Cretaceous weathering surface. The Golden Blocks Goldfield has had no modern exploration. The most recent exploration was undertaken in the early 1980s. There are known acid intrusives in the area, with potential for the application of new models of intrusive-related gold mineralisation.

Social licence to operate is developed and kept through managing both operational impacts and the relationship between local community and company. However, CSIRO research has demonstrated that in determining how accepting community members are of a mining operation, relational factors, such as procedural fairness and trust, are much more important than operational impacts, such as impacts on employment and the environment (Moffat and Zhang, 2015). Companies seek to develop relational factors through their engagement with local community; such engagement has many aspects, including, initially identifying stakeholders and positioning the company as part of the local community (Lacey et al, in prep; Thomson and Boutlier, 2011). These relational factors involve the social identities of people living in the community. Social identities are a part of people that shape their beliefs, based on their connections with various groups in their lives (Hogg et al, 2004).An engagement process, intentionally or not, inevitably interacts with the social identities of stakeholders (Crane and Ruebottom, 2011). For example, traditionally, at the very beginning of engagement processes, community members are assigned to categories using conventional stakeholder mapping and categorisation methods, often based on assumptions about stakeholders’ interests, which equates to assumptions about stakeholders’ social identities (Colvin, Witt and Lacey, 2016; International Council on Mining and Metals, 2012). Yet, there has been limited empirical inquiry into whether such categories reflect the social identities of stakeholders and if there is a bearing on relational factors, including, the perceived fairness of consultations and trust in mining companies (Crane and Ruebottom, 2011). Also at this time, companies commonly seek to create a presence in communities, for example, joining Chambers of Commerce and participating alongside community members. Again, there has been limited empirical inquiry into whether community members and companies identifying with the same overarching group and thus sharing aspects of social identity, influences relational factors (Crane and Ruebottom, 2011). In this study, we examined the effects of changing aspects of social identity by changing how stakeholders were identified and companies were positioned, on how stakeholders’ perceived a new mining operation, specifically how they perceived the procedural fairness of the proposed consultation process and trusted the company, two factors that underlie a company’s social licence to operate.CITATION:Carr-Cornish, S and Moffat, K, 2016. The Permian rocks at Gympie were first studied as far back as 1868 in conjunction with the discovery of gold. The relationship of the Gympie Group to other sequences in the Gympie Composite Terrane is an important subject of investigations in a new mapping project of the Geological Survey Program of the Department of Resource Industries.In two areas the Gympie Group has been divided into four defined formations. They are the Highbury Volcanics (base), Ram mutt Formation, South Curra Limestone and Tamaree Formation (top) in the Gympie area, and the Mant basalt (base), Kolbar Formation, Gigoomgan Limestone and Teebar Formation (top) in the Gigoomgan area. Geochemical and lithological evidence from the basal volcanics of the Gympie Group (Highbury Volcanics, Mant basalt) indicate that they developed in an intraoceanic island arc setting. The overlying volcaniclastic sediments (Rammutt Formation, Kolbar Formation), which contain some continentally-derived material, are mainly of local derivation and shallow-water marine. A hiatus is present at the top of the Early Permian Rammutt Formation and Kolbar Formation. Following the hiatus, limestone sedimentation characteristic of a basin of restricted circulation developed in the Late Permian. There is some evidence of a hiatus between the limestone deposition of the Gigoomgan and South Curra Limestones and the overlying probable turbidite deposits of the Teebar and Tamaree Pnrmatinnc

The Bunga Beds of the Late Devonian - Boyd Volcanic' Complex is a well exposed succession of rhyolite, sedimentary rocks and minor basalt outcropping along the south coast of New South Wales. The sedimentary rocks vary from shallow water basin margin facies, to deep-water basin centre facies, and the majority of .the volcanics are associated with the deep water facies association. The volcanics are dominated by rhyolite domes, lavas and cryptodomes, whose margins are extensively autobrecciated and quench fragmented. In situ pyroclastics represent a very minor volcanic component and are restricted to the remnants of two small doors- top tuff cone successions. Pyroclastic debris is common in the sedimentary succession enclosing the volcanics and was clearly derived from shallow to emergent basin margin areas through mass-flow redeposition. The succession has bearing on the origin of the fragmental component of, the volcanics that host Kuroko- type massive sulphide deposits. The characteristics of these fragmental volcanics are not well documented. We suggest that based on the Bunga Beds,'Kuroko-type volcanic successions are dominated by coherent rhyolite/ felsic lavas and intrusive domes, autobreccias and hyaloclastites, that in situ pyroclastics are rare or lacking, and that redeposited volcanic debris is abundant. Pyroclastic debris is most likely to have been derived from shallow areas marginal to the deep-water volcanic centre that produce the Kuroko-type volcanics and sulphides.

The height of fracturing (HoF) measures the propagation distance of continuous fracturing from the mining horizon and is also termed the height of cracking (Hebblewhite, 2020; Khanal et al, 2019) or hydrologically the height of groundwater drainage (Tammetta, 2013). In longwall practice, HoF is an important predictive indicator for assessing the dewatering effect of panel extraction on the shallow aquifer and surface flows. The HoF determination is basically dependent on field measurement works, typically using surface extensometer, borehole televiewer imaging, piezometer monitoring, packer testing, borehole breakout logging, and isotopic tracer monitoring (Brown and Walsh, 2022; Corbett, 2022; Hebblewhite, 2020; Holla and Armstrong, 1986; Mills and O’Grady, 1998; Walsh et al, 2022a, 2022b). These methods or tools have been widely applied to observe rock fracturing and groundwater responses to longwalls at Australian coalmines, for example, Dendrobium Mine (Brown and Walsh, 2022; Walsh et al, 2022b), Appin Mine (Walsh et al, 2022a), and Springvale Mine (Corbett, 2022). In Chinese mines, borehole televiewer imaging and packer testing are more frequently used due to convenient instrumentation, quick testing, and not requiring long-term maintenance of the instrumentation boreholes. The HoF determination also involves further raw data interpretations, for which specialist software for data extraction and quantitative criteria for bounding the fracture transition and termination are necessary. By combining the measured fracture distribution and longwall parameters regarding panel geometry and geological settings, several HoF models have been developed for conceptualising the understanding of strata depressurisation and providing mine engineers fast calculation tools for HoF prediction. The Mackie model considered the height of fracturing as the upper bound of fractured zone and revealed that within the fractured zone there are highly connected fractures and accordingly porosity enhancement and groundwater depressurisation, where the fracture network can be less transmissive from the mining horizon up (Hebblewhite, 2020). The fractured zone shares similar fracturing regime but different heights in varying models: HoF is 30 to 58 times of the mining height (t) based on Australian, Soviet and UK experience (Kendorski, 1993, 2006), and 21 to 33 t according to the field measurements in NSW Central Coast, Australia (Galvin, 2016). Some Australian longwall mines adopt Ditton model (Ditton and Merrick, 2014) (Equations 1.1 and 1.2 in Table 1) sourcing from NSW coalfield experience for HoF prediction, while Liu model (Liu, 1981) (Equations 2.1 to 2.4 in Table 1) developed from 27 coalmines in China is frequently used by Chinese coalmines.

For the last decade Australia has been the leading exporter of both steam and coking coal. In the ten-year period 1989 - 1998 steam coal exports increased by 93 per cent and metallurgical coal exports increased by 50 per cent. However, profitability of the steam coal sector has been disappointing. The coking coal sector, especially the hard coking coal segment, has fared better but its profitability was more because of its ability to maintain relatively high prices rather than its inherent productivity. Until quite recently the Australian coking coal sector was widely expected to be able to maintain this comfortable state without undue effort for the three major æpartnersÆ; the companies, the State Government and the unions. But coking coal could now be heading down the path followed by steam coal that ends with long-term over-supply and, despite steady improvements in productivity, poor profitability. Steam coal entered the ænewÆ era of long-term over-supply some years ago. Over-supply was due to the rapid increase in production in Indonesia, often from new mines and Australia. AustraliaÆs production rise was underlain by the apparent belief that the best way to lower costs was to increase production. In the first couple of years costs didnÆt fall much but the additional tonnage was sold at lower and lower prices into the spot market. By mid-1998 the difference between the contract price set with Japanese utilities and spot sales was often in excess of $US12 per tonne. Japanese contract prices and tonnages have since fallen significantly. Steam coal has moved from being a product to being a commodity. Any profits are due more to the low Australian dollar rather than inherent mine productivity. Seaborne coking coal trade has been dominated by Australia, Canada and the USA, with the USA becoming less competitive. Unfortunately, when the Queensland capacity expansion was well down the pipeline, the Asian financial crisis occurred and the Japanese economy entered what appears to be a long-term recession. Contract prices fell 18 per cent, tonnages decreased and some mines have been reclassified as supplying lower priced coking coal. The paper analyses past and expected future trends in labour and mine productivity, rail freight and FOB export port cash and total costs of the Australian steam coal and coking coal sectors and discusses the market outlook for Australia. The future economic viability of the industry is analysed and discussed in the light of the rapidly changing global environment.

The Telfer Gold Mine, owned and operated by Newcrest Mining and located in Western Australia, is currently being expanded. A new underground sublevel cave development is proposed along with an appreciable expansion of the open pit. The Telfer area is generally subject to low rainfall, however, during the wet season cyclonic events can result in sizable rain events, which have the potential to cause substantial inflow. In addition to this, during the first five years (nominal) of the mineÆs life, there is the potential for drainage paths between the pit and the underground mine via decommissioned underground workings which lie directly under the pit. After this initial five year period the pit floor will be mined out below the old workings and will therefore no longer connect to the underground, however cave breakthrough to the surface may start to occur thus providing another water path into the underground mine. To arrive at an optimum, safe solution for dewatering the mine that successfully addressed the above items, a rigorous risk analysis was included as an integral part of the design process. This involved the determination of the probability of events occurring and the consequences of these occurrences. This was compared against the cost of mitigation for the various events. This paper outlines the process by which a safe concept addressing all the issues relating to dewatering the proposed mine has been arrived at. This process included: Establishing the pit catchment areas. These were based on historical run-off data and took into account practical mitigation works. Establishing an Average Recurrence Interval (ARI) based on reference material and historical rainfall data. Utilising a standard approach based on Australian Rainfall and Run-off (ARR) to calculate pumping and storage requirements for the various catchments. Analysing the 20 years of recorded rainfall in the Telfer area to establish the duration, magnitude and sequence of events. This analysis assisted in determining the surface run-off coefficient. Establishing potential water storage areas and determining the risks associated with using particular storage options. Establishing the percolation rate through the cave zone. A degree of uncertainty regarding the percolation rate in the cave zone required that the consequences of using various percolation rates were considered to aid in establishing the rate which was adopted. Establishing preliminary concepts and determining the most economically viable concept. Conducting a risk assessment based on the principles outlined by Australian Rainfall and Run-off (ARR) to confirm that the appropriate Average Recurrence Interval (ARI) had been selected. A risk assessment was also conducted in accordance with client requirements. Establishing the optimum pump station sizes and storage capacities. Establishing the appropriate numbers of duty and standby equipment. By using the foregoing process, which included a number of stages of risk analyses, an optimum dewatering system concept was produced.

Improving the understanding of the processes governing ground movements in and around brown coal open cuts is of significant interest for both operating stability and rehabilitation. Brown coal, lignite, is a low-rank coal that is best described as a soft rock, with geotechnical characteristics that derive from its organic origin. It is well-known that low-rank coals exhibit creep behaviour; however, little has been reported on the impacts of chemical processes on brown coal creep behaviour even though organic substances are susceptible to chemical alterations and mining processes will contribute to changes to the geochemical environment; around most mines, groundwater flow patterns are altered leading to enhanced surface water infiltration. Here we study the deformation behaviour of brown coal in response to ion exchange reaction. Our experimental results show that for different ion exchange conditions different characteristics of secondary compression are observed. With the addition of Ca2+, the ratio between coefficients of secondary and primary compression (Ca /Cc) initially decreased, presenting a minimum value at the concentration of 0.005?M, then increased significantly. This implies the importance of ion exchange process for the long-term deformation of brown coal. On the other hand, increasing Na+ concentration did not affect Ca /Cc values significantly over all tested concentrations. The suppression of diffuse double layer was still observed for Na+-treated samples as increasing Na+ concentration decreases Ca values. Assessment of metal mobility, acid rock drainage production, and toxic effects from weathering of mineralised materials (ie mine-waste piles and outcropping alteration/ore zones) is key in evaluating and mitigating metal mining sites. Many metal- and acid-generating materials at these sites are sulfur minerals (sulfides to sulfates) with differing reactivities, weathering characteristics and metal contents. Our working hypothesis predicts that data on the types and quantities of sulfur minerals, coupled with comparison of their sulfur isotopic compositions to that of aqueous sulfate in the surrounding environment, can be used to evaluate primary pathways of weathering reactions at mining sites. We developed a sequential extraction scheme to separate the phases of sulfur in mineralised materials. Operationally defined phases, including monosulfides, disulfides, elemental sulfur, water-soluble sulfo-salts, acid-soluble sulfates, and resistant sulfate phases such as barite, are quantified gravimetrically and/or instrumentally. Several sets of experiments were designed to test the effectiveness of this extraction scheme. First, a variety of ore sulfides diluted in an inert matrix was analysed with the scheme. Results showed that molybdenite and arsenic-bearing sulfides do not behave as predicted from just their sulfur oxidation states, indicating that samples containing these minerals need special treatment for complete phase recovery. Second, a natural mine-waste composite standard was analysed by the scheme. The sum of the phases was equal to the total sulfur concentration analysed independently. Each phase had a similar, but distinct sulfur isotopic composition. The results were verified with a laboratory prepared æproxyÆ having the same mineralogical composition as the standard, but with each phase having a very different sulfur isotopic composition. The sulfur isotopic compositions of the recovered phases from the æproxyÆ showed that the scheme effectively separated the sulfur with only minor cross contamination of phases. The speciation and isotopic analyses were applied to both mine-waste piles and naturally occurring alteration zones at nine mine sites. A case study from one site comparing the sulfur isotopic composition of minerals in an alteration zone and dissolved sulfate in proximal streams is presented. This case study shows the application of our data to differentiating sources of sulfate in the surrounding environment.

Optimisation and mathematical formulations for open pit design and long-term production scheduling have been available since the 1960s. There are two main concerns in the application of existing mixed integer programming (MIP) models in open pit mines: a. the feasibility of generating both optimal solutions and practically mineable scheduling patterns and b. the inability to deal with in situ variability in orebodies and account for uncertainty. In dealing with these issues, a general open pit production scheduling method for multi-element deposits is presented and subsequently used to optimise the long-term production schedule in a nickel laterite deposit. The application shows the weaknesses of MIP formulations in terms of generating optimal solutions as well as practically feasible mining patterns. The application of the same formulation in the presence of in situ orebody variability and uncertainty uncovers a major reason for deviations of scheduled production from actual production, and outlines additional limits of traditional optimisation formulations as well as future needs.

A simple method of designing effective fill drainage systems for slurry backfill is presented. By using the proposed method, it is easy to calculate and predict the expected fill drainage rates or to provide additional drainage systems to accelerate the fill drainage. The fundamentals of hydraulic fill and an efficient method to determine its permeability is also explained. The safety in hydraulic filling and bulkhead stability depends totally on achieving effective drainage regime for the fill. This paper provides the basis for creating such efficient drainage regimes. The recent fatal fill bulkhead failures in Australia were the result of poor drainage from the respective fill masses, and therefore it is more important to provide suitable drainage arrangements to continue using hydraulic fill to the benefit of the mining industry. At present there is no procedure available to mine operators to estimate the expected bulkhead pressures to design a satisfactory bulkhead. Some mines are constructing bulkheads after their initial investigations carried out years ago. Other mines have simply borrowed the ideas from the pioneer mines and using in their areas. It is high time that we develop a rational approach to estimate the expected bulkhead pressures for the design of bulkheads. We need a simple model that could be understood and used by the mine operators on a day-to-day basis. This paper also presents a model to predict the bulkhead pressures for designing safe bulkheads.

As far as I can ascertain, every other paper being delivered at this seminar concerns mines which come into the first category, or at any rate are close enough to it for the promoters to be able to afford an expert's valuation.

Commercial operation of the Sherritt Gordon process in Australia for the leaching of nickel sulphides has promoted an investi- gation of the factors which influence extraction kinetics. This portion of the investigation has been directed towards the physical and chemical nature of the concentrate and the physical evi- dence of the mode of extraction. Details of the particle size distribution, mineral composition and chemical composition are given. The dis- tribution of various minerals in different size fractions and magnetic fractions is discussed. An electron microprobe was used to determine the composition of individual grains in the concentrate. The solid residue from an ammonia oxi- dation leach was subjected to microphotograph- ic examination, X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning by an electron microprobe. Clear evidence was obtained for a shrinking core mode of kinetic extraction with an amorphous iron oxide product layer contrary to previous reports that the latter is pseudomorphic with the original mineral.

The Wangaloa coal mine closed in 1989, and an attempt to grow Pinus radiata on quartz-rich overburden dumps was not successful. The site is currently being rehabilitated with re-profiling and native plant establishment. Plants are being established in a range of substrates that consist of variably disaggregated Tertiary coal measure sediments derived from the mine sequence. This material has low organic matter content (typically <10 %), originating from coal fines or carbonaceous sediment. Substrate samples were collected during December 2003 from a range of sites varying in age, slope, and parent material. Nutrient analysis includes nitrate, ammonia, total N, total P, available P and readily exchangeable base cations. Total nitrogen and phosphorus are low on areas of recently disturbed, quartz-rich overburden, with total N =1200 mg/kg, and total P =200 mg/kg. Background forested areas have total N ranging between 2800 - 3300 mg/kg and total P of 420 - 500 mg/kg. Quartz-rich overburden sites contain available nitrogen levels of less than 6 mg/kg, while background forested areas are generally >20 mg/kg. The soils and water runoff are generally acid, with pH down to three. Water samples have been collected from both ground and surface resources on a monthly basis since December 2003. The main lake on the site had pH of 4.6 in 1999, and this remained relatively unchanged when 850 tonnes of lime were added in 2002. However, the lake pH changed to 6.4 within a one month period in 2004, and has fluctuated since that time.

This paper outlines the role of commissioning in the project cycle, shows how to get organised for commissioning and describes the principal commissioning activities. Emphasis is placed on appointing key commissioning staff early in the project to coordinate the preparations for commissioning and on detailed planning and tracking to ensure that the required commissioning activities are performed satisfactorily. The management of safety during commissioning is reviewed.

Environmental legislation is changing rapidly throughout Australia at the present time, and with that change comes additional responsibilities for the mining and petroleum industries. Among the many changes that are being made are increased penalties for both criminal and accidental environmental impairment. The defences for criminal offences are limited and for other offences the laws may impose strict liability - in effect the offender is guilty until proven innocent. Mines may be included under contaminated land legislation, creating additional liabilities for clean-up, rehabilitation and long-term management. It is not unknown in Australia for the value of a mortgaged property to be less than the amount of the environmental liability acquired by a mortgagor in possession due to contamination of the site. An essential part of the management program for resource projects is now the regular conduct of an environmental audit, the results of which assist in the management of the legal and financial liabilities facing company directors and managers. The audit can also assist with negotiations with government agencies, staff, unions, insurers, Aboriginal and other community groups. An environmental audit may also help to ensure that companies are claiming the maximum allowable deductions for environmental works under the tax laws, and provide evidence in support of such claims. Environmental legislation affecting resource industries Environmental legislation in Australia is changing rapidly and can impose massive constraints, substantial administrative costs, and considerable liability on directors, managers and the corporation. Pollution control legislation Every State and Territory of Australia has a range of pollution control legislation contained in either individual acts relating to air, water, noise and land, or embodied in a single environment protection act. Pollution control legislation provides a critical management baseline for resource industries throughout Australia, often requiring the full-time attention of an environmental manager or an environmental department. In general, it is an offence to discharge effluents into water, or emit gases into the atmosphere above prescribed limits, cause noise above a regulated level, or contaminate land without a licence. A licence determines how much of a substance can be discharged, the location, the receiving environment, the quality, and the time at which discharges can be made or noise can be caused. Planning legislation Planning legislation controls where a project is located, how it will be constructed and operated, how large it is allowed to be, and what will happen once the project is completed. Development consents or approvals will generally contain a range of conditions controlling the preparation of the site, the construction of the facility and the way it is operated throughout its expected life time. Resource projects may be regarded under legislation as scheduled or designated developments requiring special treatment during the decision-making process. Under planning legislation, it is usual for resource projects to be subject to an environmental impact assessment process. Resource legislation Resource legislation specifically covering mining and petroleum in Australia, also contains requirements regarding protection of the environment during exploration for and extraction of minerals and oil. A mining or petroleum production lease usually contains numerous conditions regarding protection of the environment and rehabilitation of the site during and after the life of the extractive process.

The Australian industrial relations system is in a state of constant change. We are undergoing a transformation from a compulsory arbitration and an award based system to one which is fundamentally rooted in the concepts of enterprise bargaining. This is true both at the State and Federal level. The structural changes which facilitate the movement away from the predominance of Awards to enterprise agreements has been fostered by both sides of the political spectrum and is a cornerstone of their respective industrial relations platforms.In determining what form or combination of forms of industrial instrument(s) should apply to the individual enterprise, employers must have regard to the viability and sustainability of each form in the changing industrial climate. In particular employers should have regard to the needs and agendas of their employees and unions which may purport to represent Them.

The expansive, open cut iron-ore mines in Western Australia typically experience few days of rain per annum, often amounting to less than 250 mm. Unlike mines where rainfall is frequent, they may be less prepared for extreme rainfall events. Such events can cause erosion, flooding and sedimentation, drainage alteration, spoil and stock heaps wetting and effect slope stability. Such impacts may threaten personnel safety, infrastructure, and production. The CRATER (‘Climate Related Adaptation from Terrain Evaluation Results’) framework collates and interprets a mine’s pre-existing data and semi-quantitative information to assess vulnerability to, and ultimately plan to avoid or minimise, flood-related hazard to infrastructure, people, downtime, environment and revenue. Outputs assist decision makers to design investment strategies for minimising mining operations’ vulnerability to climate. Previously developed for smaller, wetter mines in Queensland’s coal region, the outputs provide a hot-spot map, fault tree analysis and an assessment of the mine’s capacity to adapt. The multicriteria evaluation (MCE) within a geographic information system (GIS), equally suits iron-ore mines’ siteconditions (elevation, slope, drainage, soil and vegetation) to identify critical inundation areas. Hotspot results provide target zones for in-depth fault-tree analysis that, in turn, present a range of sitespecific adaptation options. Rainfall-intensity and the number of rain days since the 1970s have increased over central and eastern parts of the Pilbara Region. While tropical cyclones may become less frequent, they are projected to increase in intensity. Although some parts of the Hamersley Ranges receive more than 500 mm per annum, rainfall in the Pilbara is generally very low. Therefore, experience of the impacts of extreme rainfall events in the constantly changing topography of Western Australia’s iron ore region may be sparse. Minimising potential effects can be proactively assisted using CRATER.

At the Kristineberg mine in northern Sweden sulfide-rich, poorly buffered tailings have been deposited in five impoundments located along a valley. The tailings area has been remediated by applying a combination of till cover and flooding. A new method that has been applied to parts of the tailings area is to raise the groundwater table to saturate the tailings. By increasing pH by liming, thereby reducing metal mobility, a water-covered downstream impoundment is functioning as a trap for metals released from the till-covered impoundments upstream. In this paper the efficiency of the system approach used at Kristineberg is evaluated. Progressive changes of water quality from groundwater in the upstream till-covered impoundments via surface streams within the pond system to the water in the flooded downstream pond and its outlet are described. The results show that the system approach used in the design of the remediation programme of the tailings works as planned. The sulfide oxidation rate has decreased in the till-covered impoundments, and, as predicted, there is an out-flush of old weathering products which will continue for at least five years before equilibrium is reached. The groundwater in the till-covered impoundments has high concentrations of Fe, S, Mg and Zn, but the concentrations of metals such as Cu, Cd and Pb are much lower than before the till cover was applied. The limed pond is an efficient metal trap, with concentrations as high as 2.76 per cent Zn and 0.28 per cent Cu in the calcite-gypsum sludge developed on the tailings. The outlet from the flooded pond, and thus from the whole mining area, releases small amounts of metals to the recipient in comparison to the amounts that are in movement within the mining area. During the period May to November, 13 kg dissolved Zn and 111 kg particulate Zn was released to the recipient, whereas a total of 27 000 kg was transported by surface water within the impoundment system during the same period. The results from Kristineberg show that when planning remediation of complex mining areas, it is useful to adopt a system approach in which different methods are used on different parts of the area along the flow path of the drainage water, whereas flooding of the downstream pond is the key to the performance of the entire system.

In North-West Nelson the Riwaka Complex, a linear basic intrusive complex, is exposed for approximately 45 kilometres. Some 500 kilometres south, across the Alpine Fault, a linear zone of similar but less well known basic intrusives that may be correlatives of the Riwaka Complex is exposed discontinuously for about 80 kilometres. The Complex was emplaced at several centers along a major tensional fracture zone that developed in upper Carboniferous to Lower Permian time. This fracture zone probably formed in response to the development of a west dipping subduction zone that gave rise to the Permian volcanic arcs in east Nelson and western Southland. The Riwaka Complex contains three rock suites. The Fractionation Suite, characterized by cyclic mineral layering and small scale cumulus banding is the largest and is divided into the Ultramafic, Hornblende and Plagioclase Series, each of which is subdivided into several units. The Cumulus Gabbros represent a restricted but important suite of unusual composition, while the third suite is the late phase Diorite Suite.
