The purpose of this paper is to outline the equipment used for diamond drilling at Mount Isa, together with alterations and recent improvements therein. As the majority of the drilling is carried out with machines running at relatively high speeds using XRN blast hole bits, the paper is mainly devoted to this branch of drilling.Because diamond bit costs constitute the major expense, a considerable amount of research into bit design has been carried out, and in several instances, costs per foot have shown an appreciable decrease in spite of rising manufacturing costs and higher diamond prices. Equipment performance has at times been erratic due to delays in delivery and occasionally because of faulty parts, but in general the position has improved by keeping in close contact with the manufacturers.BLASTHOLE DRILLING MACHINESThe standard blasthole diamond drill is the 'E-500' two cylinder air powered model manufactured by Mineral Drillers Limited. Several of the older pattern JV41 are still in use, but are being retired as they wear out.. Machines are repaired in the underground diamond drill shop.The normal feed gears used when drilling in lead shales are 350 top gear and 450 low gear-actually 357 and 438 revolutions per inch of advance respectively. The 300 gear was commonly used several years ago, but it was found that bit footages could be increased without any appreciable drop in penetration rate by reducing to the 350 gear. A colourimetric technique, originally developed for methyl iso butyl carbinol (MIBC) based on the Komarowsky reaction, has been extended to a wide range of common mineral flotation frothers. The procedure, which is briefly described, is shown suited to on-site determinations in a campaign at Kennecott Utah Copper Copperton Concentrator (Rio Tinto). Some observations are described, including: frother (MIBC) concentration evolution down a bank, frother distribution between pulp and froth phases, and loss of frother over time due to adsorption on certain minerals. A possible interference with a fuel oil addition was overcome. MIBC in recycle water was also measured. The ability to monitor frother easily will help interpret gas dispersion behaviour and should permit further optimisation of flotation cell hydrodynamics and chemistry. The capability to directly measure should help optimise the type, amount and location of frother addition, and to assess frother recycled with reclaim process water.

The topaz resource at Torrington in northern N.S.W is currently the subject of a joint research and development programme managed by Pacific Copper Ltd, This programme has culminated in a pilot topaz calcination plant, located at Parramatta, which, through its operation, will establish the commercial viability of developing this mineral as an industrial raw material for both the refractory and fluoride chemical industries.

South Australian coals are all low in rank and generally poor in quality, with difficult combustion characteristics. This circumstance makes the selection of a fuel source for future power generation difficult, requiring careful study and detailed analysis of the various alternatives. Combustion characteristics can have a significant effect on plant design and costs, and need early attention in any exploration and evaluation programme. The physical location of the deposits, often remote from established infrastructure and centres of population, is also a major factor in the ultimate cost of power at the poirl use.

The Savage River Mines concentrator and pipeline has operated for seven years. During this time some problems of general interest have been overcome, particularly in the area of autogenous grinding in large mills and in pump- ing solids over long distances. The plant flow sheet and equipment at Savage River and the control techniques are. described. Ore type has varied widely over the per- iod of plant operation. Techniques developed to minimise the effect of variations on through- put are discussed'. The main technique is the controlled rejection or addition of grinding Media.

The design of drawpoints in caving and stoping mines has a significant impact on the productivity of the operation. Drawpoints must be designed to provide uniform drawdown and maximum recovery of the broken ore within the limits imposed by the dimensions of the stope, the stability of the pillars, the method of draw, material flow characteristics, etc. The design of drawpoints historically relied on the mining engineerÆs experience and intuition. However, in many operations, empirical analyses have also produced important information regarding design geometry. Factors that affect the sizing and spacing of drawpoints are discussed and guidelines are provided for their design in order to obtain maximum recovery of broken ore and reduce hang-ups.

The Koongarra uranium deposit was discovered in August 1970 by Noranda Australia Limited. Denison Mines Limited acquired the rights of ownership in October 1980 and has continued the 'struggle' to bring the proposed mine, containing approximately 13 300 tonnes of U308 of Indicated ore and having a value of $1 billion (1984 dollars), into operation. During the 14 years that have passed, the owners have found it necessary to deal with numerous Federal, State and Territory government departments, aboriginal representatives, handle thousands of communications, attend and convene countless meetings and spend millions of dollars. The first thing to be aware of is that the warming effect of carbon dioxide is strongly logarithmic. Of the 3¦ that carbon dioxide contributes to the greenhouse effect, the first 20 ppm has a greater effect than the following 400 ppm. By the time we get to the current level of 384 ppm, each 100 ppm increment will produce only about 0.1¦ of warming. With atmospheric carbon dioxide rising at about 2 ppm per annum, temperature will rise at 0.1¦ every 50 years for the next couple of hundred years before the effect becomes minuscule. The warming of the 20th century, as the Earth came out of the Little Ice Age, was a consequence of short, high-amplitude solar cycles. A number of solar physicists have predicted that the next solar cycle, Solar Cycle 24, will be quite weak. Based on the correlation between solar activity and the EarthÆs climate, a temperature decline of 2¦C is predicted for the mid-latitude regions over the coming decade, equating to the experience of the Dalton Minimum. Anthropogenic warming due to carbon dioxide will not ameliorate this temperature decline. Increased atmospheric carbon dioxide is wholly beneficial due to itÆs fertilisation effect. Efforts to inhibit Australian carbon dioxide emissions are exactly wrong in science.

Seam gases are the most important atmos- phere contaminants in Australian collieries, their importance increasing with depth; C02 as well as CH4 may be important in intruded envir- onments. The generally high rank of the coal, with low moisture content, makes for abnormal dust production. The other contaminants are introduced and subject to better control, in- cluding products of spontaneous combustion. Due to market situations the generally lower rank and higher sulphur coals more prone to self heating are mined less. Future mining at greater depths should see greater problems with atmosphere contaminants.

This paper reviews the state-of-the-art in the automation of underground mining vehicles and reports on the development of an autonomous navigation system under development through the CMTE with sponsorship arranged by AMIRA. Past attempts at automating LHDs and haul trucks are described and their particular strengths and weaknesses are discussed. The auto-guidance system being developed overcomes some of the limitations of state-of-the-art prototype æcommercialÆ systems. It can be retrofitted to existing remote controlled vehicles, uses minimum installed infrastructure and is flexible enough for rapid relocation to alternate routes. The navigation techniques use data fusion of two separate sets of sensors combining natural feature recognition, nodal maps and inertial navigation techniques. Collision detection is incorporated and people and other traffic are excluded from the tramming area. This paper describes the work being done by the group with regard to auto-tramming and also outlines the future goals.

The mineral sand orebodies of the east coast of Australia occupy approximately three per cent of the dune-heath-wetland coastal environment. They are associated with coastal plant communities ranging from Holocene high dunes carrying mature Eucalypt forests to low- lying heaths on Pleistocene deposits. Commonly, 0.25 to 1.5 per cent of the sand volume mined is removed from the site. Therefore, the volume change is insignificant. The equipment and techniques in use are flexible and the land can be returned in a manner suited to its subsequent use for grazing, subdivision or recreation. Landforms similar to the pre-existing are created in two case studies given. Sophisticated revegetation techniques are practised and are discussed in two case studies. Pre-mining vegetation surveys and post-mining monitoring are used to guide the management of the ecosystem.

The use of pipeline-c to carry crude'oil and petroleum pro-ducts is a reliable and economic*Way to transport large quantities of oil. The length and size of these pipelines have continued to grow throughout the world as the demand for petroleum has in-creased and as the price of other transportation-methods has risen. At the present time pipelines 'can move a barrel of oil a distance of 100 miles at an average cost of ,80.06 U.S. dollars.The major elements in pipeline design are discussed. Methods of calculating pressure drop and horsepower requirements are pre-sented. These are variations of standard equations.in which the elements of each equation are expressed in terms common to the petroleum industry. Major equipment is discussed., particularlyas it relates to operation and economics.Cost data are presented to aid in preliminary economic ana-lysis. Curves illustrate the cost of oil transportation at flow rates between 10,000 and 500,000 barrels per day and permit the selection of pipe diameter-which will result in minimum operating costs.

The following is an outline of the main metallurgical process developments which have occurred at Port Pirie during more than 100 years of smelting. Emphasis is placed on those process developments which evolved from research and development at Port Pirie, rather than those based upon purchased or established technology and straightforward plant engineering. Most processes involved have undergone major change and improvement through the efforts of Port Pirie staff. A culture of metallurgical research and development evolved strongly during the years when G K Williams made such a great impact, and continued for half a century. This culture involved strong links with external research bodies, particularly universities. A near complete bibliography of these developments is provided, together with a listing of patents. Research and development by The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty Ltd commenced in 1918 at South Melbourne, and after transfer to Port Pirie in 1921, continued there until 1989. Three periods of highly successful innovation resulted ù that of G K Williams into the 1930s, the post-war period until about 1962 and the period with developments led by Denby H Ward from about 1970 to 1985.

The mineralogy, maero- and micro-textures of Thackaringa ore are simple and have many counterparts among base metal-quartz-siderite vein type deposits elsewhere.The ore consists predominantly of galena, sphalerlte, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, and arsenopyrite in a quartz and siderite gangue. Silver minerals, as such, appear to be lacking and silver values are no higher than in other sulphide ores of this type. These features contrast very markedly with those of the A.B.H. Consols Lode which appears to have emanated from the north end of the Broken Hill Main Lode Horizon during high grade regional metamorphism. The Consols Lode has been regarded as of Thackaringa type, and both are regarded as possibly arising from the remobilization of Main Lode Horizon ore. Whilst this may yet prove to be so it appears that the marked differences in mineral composition between the Consols and the Thackaringa types, would require somewhat different modes of regeneration.Thackaringa ore, as well as A.B.H. Consols ore, on this basis, would necessitate the development of a metahydrothermal ore fluid to account for their present apparently hydrothermal (or pseudo-hydrothermal) constitution...

Both innovation and excellence are desirable attributes of education, as they are also markers in the progression of the human race, but how attainable are they? The interaction of minerals and humanity provides a special insight into the development of both criteria, from the discovery that chert cuts, through the Bronze Age and the first use of metal alloys for implements, to using coal, oil and uranium as sources of fuel. However, there have been many hiccups along the way, where excellence in one respect has meant disaster in another. Examples are in the exploitation of asbestos, and in traditionally poor work practices in mining, both contributing to the widespread public belief that minerals and mining are ecologically undesirable. Yet is this perception based on the unrealistic expectation of innovation and excellence being simultaneous qualities of any given process? Common sense born of experience indicates that the journey from one, to the other, is usually a long and often tedious process, with much trial and error before excellence is attained. In our time, the partnership between academia and industry is the usual pathway to achieve it. Even so, we should take care that innovation does not become overwhelmed by the pursuit of excellence: as history clearly demonstrates, humanity depends upon both.

Sampling is an integral part of gold bullion analysis. Gold mining industries sell millions of dollars worth of gold on the basis of analyses. Biased sampling can cause a serious loss in terms of monetary value to a mining company; hence accurate sampling is of great importance. The sampling procedures for gold bullion will be described. Emphasis is given to the most reliable method of obtaining a representative sample from a gold bar. The problems associated with sample preparation will also be discussed.The sampling procedure at the Kalgoorlie Metallurgical Laboratory will be evaluated in the light of comparative results from the Australian Gold Refineries (Perth, Kalgoorlie). The most common sampling practices adopted by different gold mining companies in the Goldfields and Australian Gold Refineries, Western Australia will also be presented.

Borehole breakout is a drilling induced phenomenon caused by overstress of rock around the borehole. Its depth usually aligns with the minimum horizontal principal stress direction. For this reason, it has been used to determine stress orientations and a series of researchers also argued its dimensions can be indicative of stress magnitudes. If the stress dependencies of breakout geometries are well understood, it is possible to estimate stress magnitudes based on these data. This paper investigates the influences of critical parameters on breakout dimensions, including absolute stress magnitudes, stress ratios and borehole diameter. Several experiments have been conducted on cubic (120 x 120 x 120 mm3) sandstone samples with pre-drilled holes (22 mm and 30 mm) under true tri-axial loading conditions using UNSW self-designed equipment. Experimental results confirm the increasing maximum horizontal principal stress magnitudes result in larger angular span and longer breakout depth at constant minimum horizontal and vertical principal stresses. There is also a considerable discrepancy observed between experimental results and the analytical model. At the outset I want to thank you for inviting a representative of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa to address you on the subject of mining and its future at this, the 13th Congress of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions. It is indeed a pleasure and an honour to be here. As many of you will recall, four years ago I, as the then President of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, had the privilege of hosting and welcoming you to the 12th Congress, the third such congress hosted by South Africa. The late Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, President of the 1930 Congress - the first to be held in South Africa - in his opening address foresaw the mining industry as "the most potent factor in spreading the benefits of civilisation over the sub-continent." We have come a long way since those halcyon days but, as I noted four years ago, it still remains true that mines have been, and will continue to be, the missionaries of development in many, if not most, of the Third World countries. I have been asked to address you on the subject of "mining" and to let my imagination roam widely so that delegates can leave the congress with a broader vision than they brought on arrival. It is a tall order and in my attempt to fulfil it I ask you to cast your minds back 120 years to a sultry, rustic day when the first diamond was discovered in South Africa at the now famous town of Kimberley. At that time the South African economy, predominantly pastoral, was still at subsistence level. Almost overnight the ensuing diamond rush turned the then British- owned northern Cape Colony's semi-desert scene into a hive of mining activity, every prospector bent on making his instant fortune. It was very little different, I am sure, to the gold rushes that hit California in 18+8, Australia in 1851, New Zealand in the 1860s. and the Yukon in the 1890s.
