Equity finance provides the most suitable and frequently the only access to capital during the exploration and evaluation stages of resource projects when project risk is at its highest. Investors are prepared to provide equity funds in the knowledge that they are compensated for the higher risk they take on with higher potential returns or sufficient upside potential to justify the higher risk. The context of resource projects which determines the role of equity finance has changed considerably. Prior to the resurgence of the gold price and the development of new mining technology many resource projects were selectively mining orebodies by underground methods frequently with limited reserves proved up in advance of mining. The limited proved ore reserves base and the volatility of the gold price all contributed to a higher risk and higher return investment environment in which the use of equity finance was more appropriate and frequently the only option for capital raising. The financial risk of a resources project can be transferred to an underwriter who makes the commitment to distribute the financial risk between a number of investors. There is also the opportunity for financiers to use a mix of equity and debt finance to allow a company to proceed with the development stage where without such a mix the resource project would not proceed. By using a level of equity finance the project becomes robust enough in its ability to service the debt finance facility and the project proceeds with the equity participants receiving a suitable risk reward return. The liquidity from the establishment of a market for the company's securities enhances further capital raising and generally enables the company to satisfy its financial requirements on more favourable terms particularly during bull markets. The role of equity finance in the management of the financial risk during the exploration, evaluation, development and mining stages of resource projects is summarised in Table 1. In more detail the principal roles of equity finance and the ways in which equity finance impact on the risk management of resource projects will be considered in turn.

Two unknown iron ore samples were found by a geologist from Ok Tedi Mining Limited copper, gold and silver mine at an old wharf site dedicated to a 1970s drilling program in Lake Murray in Papua New Guinea (PNG). These iron ore samples could not come from a PNG mine and it was decided that a study should be undertaken to understand their origin. Lake Murray is the largest lake in PNG with a total surface area of 647 km2. It has a high-water 2038 km long convoluted shoreline with seasonal water level changes (Osborne, Kyle and Abramski, 1987) and it is located around 200 km south of the Ok Tedi mine (5°13’25”S, 141°09’37”E). The petrology, mineralogy and chemistry of two Fe samples (Ok Tedi 1 and Ok Tedi 2) included optical microscopy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis and a comparison with worldwide iron ore deposits. The two rock samples were cut to produce two subsamples: (1) a polished thin section; and (2) a pulp that was used for XRF analysis including major, minor and trace elements. Ok Tedi 1 and Ok Tedi 2 were petrologically and chemically compared to a range of known iron ore samples from Australia, Brazil and South Africa. The petrological study of Ok Tedi 1 indicates that it is composed of granoblastic recrystallised hematite and the overall texture is uniform without any obvious original ‘sedimentary’ texture. Ok Tedi 2 is a ‘specular’ or platy hematite with recrystallised and fused grains. Using both petrological and chemical clues, the two Ok Tedi samples likely originated from the Iron Quadrangle in Brazil.

The great advances made in the application of solvent extraction to the recovery of copper from low grade ore sources over the past 15 to 20 years are well known. Solvent extraction is an essential step in the recovery and purification of copper from dilute sulphate leach solutions by which some one million tonnes of copper are now electrowon annually. A reagent is also available for the selective recovery of copper from chloride leach solutions and this may hold the key to the processing of complex sulphide ore concentrates. By comparison, the use of solvent extraction in the recovery and processing of zinc has as yet found little favour and is confined to only a few specific and comparatively small applications. This is despite the ready availability of a large number of low grade zinc sources and zinc-bearing wastes and residues. It is suggested that this difference is due in large part to the absence of suitable reagents having the particular features required to enable them to fit into a solvent extraction - electrowinning based process for zinc. Ideally, for the recovery of zinc from dilute sulphate solution, an extractant should operate on a proton exchange principle and be strong for zinc in the same way that o-hydroxyaryloxime reagents are strong towards copper. It should load efficiently with zinc at the pH of typical sulphate feed streams without the need for neutralisation and yet be stripped efficiently by spent zinc electrolyte. Another factor of major importance for many applications, however, is that it should be highly selective for zinc over ferric iron. These features have now been realised in a development extractant DS5846, which is a formulation of a novel class of reagent currently under investigation by Zeneca Specialties. The properties of this reagent are described with respect to selectivity, isotherms and how they compare with phosphoric and thiophosphoric acids that have been previously proposed for the extraction of zinc. For the recovery of zinc from concentrated chloride solutions a solvating or neutral donor type of extractant is required which again should ideally have high selectivity for zinc over a number of other metals, particularly iron. The new reagent Acorga ZNX50 is based on a formulation of a novel class of compound developed specifically for this purpose. It gives efficient extraction of zinc from feed solutions that are four to six molar in chloride ion but is readily stripped at 60 - 65¦C using either water, dilute brine, or spent zinc chloride electrolyte. The reagent is highly selective for zinc over iron and a range of other metals including cadmium, arsenic, lead and magnesium.

The Martabe gold mine is Indonesia’s largest precious metals-only producer and is also one of few significant hard rock mine developments in the past 15 years. Martabe is located on the west coast of the island of Sumatra in the North Sumatra province. The mine commenced operation in mid-2012, producing over 280 koz of gold and 1.5 Moz of silver in its first full year of production.Martabe consists of a cluster of six currently identified high-sulfidation epithermal deposits. The deposits lie in a north–south corridor with an approximately 8 km strike length and 1.5 km width. The total Measured, Indicated and Inferred Mineral Resource Estimate of the deposits is currently 8.2 Moz of gold and over 75 Moz of silver.The exploration program at Martabe has added more than 2 Moz of gold and 15 Moz of silver to the Mineral Resource estimates (Measured, Indicated and Inferred categories) since G-Resources acquired the project in 2009. This has been achieved at an average cost of US$17 in exploration expenditure per ounce of resource added, which includes helicopter-supported drilling programs in rugged forest terrain.The factors that led to this exploration success at Martabe include: in the first instance and most importantly, recognition of the geological potential of the mineralised system continually updating and improving ‘orebody knowledge’ and applying new ideas to the exploration program ongoing engagement and consultation by world professionals with geological expertise in similar systems ongoing executive management support for the program the high quality of work completed by previous owners a strong focus on quality control, staff development and operational safety, with the JORC Code (in particular Table 1 of the Code) as the underlying basis for quality control continual and positive engagement with government, community and other external stakeholders.This paper will discuss in detail the first of these two factors. However, if accurately described they all have one basic factor in common - energy usage is optimised with the prime mover being powered by gas or oil to generate shaft horsepower and the products of combustion being put to some use. The item which distinguishes a Total Energy system from any other engine or turbine driven project is that orate pains are taken to utilize the waste heat, whether this be in the form of exhaust gases and/or engine jacket ling water. n areas where grid supplies of electricity are readily available, the economics of most projects undoubtedly hinge upon the successful application of waste heat. However, there has been a growing awareness of other benefits, such as reliability of supply, which can be incorporated into the system. In particular these factors sway managements of hospitals and companies with complex computer facilities to examine closely the feasibility of Total Energy, Consequently, in America for example, where many systems have proved themselves the list of applications is wide - shopping centres, apartment blocks, office buildings, airline terminals, universities, schools, motels. And these do not cover the industrial sectors where the range is wider. The total number in North America is now approximately 500 and this to some extent-speaks for itself. In Australia, the real work involved in carrying out feasibility studies for Total Energy is only just beginning. 'in some quarters, the concept is not well received in that it is too new. Therefore, a typical approach is to play safe and wait until some other company has proved its operation "under Australian conditions". This is certainly a realistic approach when considering something revolutionary but as far as Total Energy.is"concerned all the individual components and sometimes combinations, (engines, generators, boilers, air-conditioning units) have been in operation for many years. The only innovation is that they are now all being brought together under one roof. This should not be forgotten when the question "where can I see something like this operating?" is asked.

During the 20th century, the iron ore mining industries of Canada and the United States passed through several periods of transformation. The beginning of the 21st century has seen yet another period of transformation, with the economic failure of a number of steel companies, the acquisition of their facilities by more viable steelmakers, and the consolidation of control within the North American iron ore industry. Changes in Canadian and United States iron ore production and the market control structure involved are analysed. The consolidation of ownership, formation of foreign joint ventures within North America, planned divestitures of upstream activities by steelmakers, and industry changes made to ensure availability of feedstocks will be reviewed. The traditional isolation of the Canadian and United States iron ore operations and their strong linkage to downstream steel production will be discussed in the context of a changing global economy. Management-labour conflicts that have taken place and agreements made during 2000 through 2004 will be discussed in the context of the economic environment leading up to these agreements. Cooperative agreements between competing Canadian and United States companies to resolve client needs in processing and blending will be examined. A joint industry-government project designed to use new technology to produce direct reduced iron nuggets of 96 - 98 per cent iron content using non-coking coals will also be assessed. Changes in iron ore transportation methods, ownership and infrastructure will be reviewed for both rail and inland waterway transport between Canadian and United States companies. A brief analysis of social and environmental issues relating to sustainable development of the Canadian-United States iron ore industry will be included.

The Northern Cape Province of South Africa is host to the Kalahari Manganese Field (KMF). The northern portion of the KMF hosts high-grade manganese referred to as Wessels’ type ore and is mined mostly from underground operations. WorleyParsons TWP is currently involved with the development of a ventilation shaft for one of these mines. The main challenge is to develop through the unconsolidated Kalahari material and weathered portion of the Karoo formation. These formations are preserved very erratically over short distances. A lack of understanding of the unique challenges presented for developing shafts in this area has resulted in the failed development of a shaft on an adjacent property and over-expended budgets on others.The renowned red sand of the Kalahari forms the top several tens of metres and overlies a horizon of gravels and calcrete that pose seasonally variable water ingress problems. A very stiff red clay horizon is then intersected. The Red Clay is prone to swellling during excavation and has been the main stumbling block on previous constructions. The standard approach has been to develop non-stop through this layer. The red clay is underlain by another horizon of calcrete, gravel and conglomerate that marks the bottom of the formation. The top of the Dwyka Tillite (Karoo Formation) is usually highly weathered and has a distinctive yellow colour. The weathered tillite is highly susceptible to drying and becomes friable. At reef-intersection, the combination of subhorizontal bedding and joints with the dominant subvertical faulting results in potential wedge failures in the manganese and ironstone units.This paper describes the geotechnical issues identified during the planning of the ventilation shaft and the risks associated with development through the Kalahari and weathered Karoo Formations. British Coal has always been a big mining company and its management has been beset with many of the problems one would associate with such an undertaking. These include its accountability to Government, its market vulnerability to competing fuels and to imported coal and its relationship with its workforce but also with its own history and size. As a fragmented private industry up to and including the Second World War, it was starved of capital and its management developed an historic relationship with its workforce which was often counter productive to success. Once nationalised, it contributed greatly to post-war industrial regeneration, investment was forthcoming to reconstruct existing mines, sink new ones and to mechanise production operations. British manufacturing companies contributed to this mechanisation drive, the very success of which drove up production and productivity and against a declining market, contributed to the reduction in size of the industry. Production machinery design evolved in the 1960s with close collaboration between manufacturers and users such that an inevitable proliferation of machinery types and specifications developed to meet local needs. Longwall mining internationally outside Western Europe only became significant in the 1970s. It became apparent that international operators demanded higher levels of plant performance from British manufacturers than British Coal did. This was the birth of the "heavy duty" plant concept. As international performances outstripped our own then British Coal moved in to invest in itself, in this heavy duty. This re-investment commenced in the mid 1970s but only gained real momentum in the 1980s when it became a virtual re-equipping exercise for the whole industry.

A new understanding of the formation of black organic shales in the Illinois Basin has contributed to insights on how to produce methane from these complex reservoirs. These shales are far from simple shallow derived sediments but are in fact the result of a complex series of events which include the intermixing of volcanic detritus and the marine organic material, onlap successions and low energy turbiditic intraformational activity. This has led to a review of the commercial significance of the mid Devonian shales in the sedimentary basins of the eastern half of the USA. These shale sequences are also characterised by very little contribution from the underlying Lower Palaeozoic carbonate formations. The later diagenetic influences and the interaction of sea floor bacteria especially since the mid Devonian have lead to the creation of a major source of energy in the form of methane. Vast areas measured in 1000s of square kilometres are known to contain biogenically derived natural gas as methane. However, this vast resource produces very little gas due to abundance of illite which acts as a major adsorption mineral and creates a refractory situation where though there is abundant gas present the rate of release is clearly subeconomic. This paper will present the results of recent laboratory trials which have indicated that it is possible to create microfracturing using bacteria within the gas bearing shale sequence and also restart the methanogenesis process. As most coal bed methane environments have similar organically derived shales in direct relationship to the coal beds themselves then this paper has ramifications for this industry as well.

In the pursuit of commercial solutions for environmental issues, individual problems are often identified, considered and resolved in isolation from other environmental matters and always at the end of the cycle û after the problem has been created. Inter-relationships are neglected if they are not seen to obviously impact on a specific problem and the issue at hand is plucked from the environmental landscape and dealt with in total isolation to all else. In a Zero Waste approach to environmental matters, all outputs are pursued as potential inputs. Industrial processes are viewed as a variation on natureÆs theme and opportunity pursued above all else. When viewed from this perspective, industry appears to have forgotten its origins. It has forgotten that it is principally about people. The juggernaut of global trade has forgotten that it is a small part of a big landscape and that its principal participants, people, cannot exist without healthy soil. Commercial activity in all parts of the world relies heavily on the ability of agriculture to produce the necessary inputs for industrial production. The care and nurturing of our soils is fundamental, not only to the survival of humanity, but also to the economic systems that support that humanity and to the industry which profits by it. Actual levels of domestic recycling in many countries around the world seldom reflect the 90 plus per cent desire to recycle recorded in surveys conducted by local authorities in almost every country. If the desire to recycle is far removed from the end result, why is it that the systems provided are so ineffective? It is obvious that what we do need is a recycling system that both engages and rewards the participant and stimulates the innate desire to support the environment. A recent trial in New South Wales, Australia, demonstrated that by giving individual households credits for recycling organic wastes, not only will contamination levels fall dramatically, but increased yields, improved soil structure, improved land values, reduced fertiliser costs and increased water use efficiency give the farmer good economic reasons for purchasing and applying quality composted product. By underpinning and securing the agricultural community, we secure the future of industry. The æCity to SoilÆ project linked the economic on-farm benefits of compost use with reduced contamination through the provision of rewards paid for by the purchase of product by the farmer.

In this paper, life cycle assessment methodology has been used to assess the variations in water use associated with different metal production and processing routes and provide insights into the value derived from water usage in the minerals sector. Using water consumption data derived from the literature it has been shown that the æcradle-to-gateÆ water consumption (or embodied water) for production of the various metals considered in the study ranged from 2.9 m3/t for steel up to 252 087 m3/t for gold. The results largely reflect the grade of the initial ore used to produce each metal, and can be approximated by the following equation:W = 167.7 G - 0.9039 where: W = embodied water (m3/t refined metal) G = grade of ore used to produce metal (per cent metal) The study showed that indirect water consumption in the metal production life cycle, in particular that due to electricity generation, can make a significant contribution to the embodied water value, eg aluminium production. When expressed in terms of m3/t ore, the results for all metals considered indicated that the embodied water is roughly, on average, three times the water consumption of the mining and concentration stage. It was also shown that the economic value per m3 of water consumed for the minerals industry exceeds that for the agricultural and industrial sectors, supporting the view that allocating water resources to the minerals industry has a strong underlying economic basis. Water reforms currently taking place in Australia aim to address issues such as competition for water access, reduced security of supply and increase in cost. Consequently the minerals industry, along with others, can be expected to come under increasing pressure to reduce fresh or raw water use and to integrate water use across sectors. While water recycling is an obvious candidate to help reduce water consumption in the minerals industry, issues such as water quality, among others, will influence the extent to which this can be achieved. In addition, wastewater volumes can be minimised using techniques such as pinch analysis to establish and use the minimum water requirement for the process. The use of dry or near-dry processing technologies, for which the demand for water is small or zero, may be a more radical solution to the water consumption problem; however, it is possible that the introduction of dry processing would bring with it a new set of problems, including dust.

Mining professionals recognise the need and application for reconciliation and value tracking. It is necessary however to examine our current reality, and evaluate the following. Do our reconciliations really balance correctly, and are we able to track value effectively throughout processes? If we are honest, in most operations the answer is a resounding no. This means that we are surrounded by fluctuation and deviations that we do not account for and do not understand. This is astounding, because given our level of scientific knowledge and the technological tools at our disposal we should have a good understanding of our environments and be able to manage them effectively. How do we manage effectively if we are surrounded by so much uncertainty? The purpose of this paper is to describe, at high level, the principles of reconciliation and value tracking, to highlight some areas where deviations are introduced into the mining process, and to propose a different approach to the apparent reconciliation and value tracking conundrum. The paper also poses several questions that need to be critically addressed at most operations. Instead of making the same mistakes each month in reconciliations, mining professionals need to acknowledge two facts. Firstly there will be uncertainty that we need to accept, since all our estimates are based on sampling, an orebody is not homogeneous and peopleÆs behaviour will influence the process, etc. Variability will always exist and lead to uncertainty. What is the current approach in the reconciliation process when a deviation occurs and how do we use reconciliation and value tracking to manage and improve our business? The second fact is that we need to stop using reconciliation and value tracking to only measure and report. We need to adopt a new approach to manage mining throughput, where reconciliation and value tracking are enablers to the success of the business. In most mining operations, significant effort goes into planning and measurement for the purposes of reconciliation and value tracking. The importance of accurate and effective reconciliation and value tracking should be to ensure the maximum utilisation of the resource, maximising throughput and enabling the business to deliver a product to its client, of the correct quality and in a timely manner.

The mining of iron ore is a high volume low margin business because the value of this commodity is significantly lower than that of base metals. The main metallurgical challenges in most of the iron ore projects proposed for treatment nowadays have been in finding the optimum flowsheet for the treatment of magnetite ores, mixed magnetite-hematite ores and even ores that have banded ironstone formations (BIF). The associated plant designs incorporate very high capacity milling systems to grind the ore down prior to magnetic separation and in being highly capital intensive requires substantial investment in mega processing plants with associated infrastructure to mill down the run-of-mine ore to the desired treatment size for upgrading.To minimise the cost of infrastructure, better beneficiation techniques and technologies are being sought to assist in reducing upfront ROM feed to allow for reduction in overall treatment plant footprint necessary in extracting the desired downstream product. This paper discusses such beneficiation techniques and advancement in technologies for the upgrading of coarse and fine iron ore utilising dense media separation (DMS), jigging, wet magnetic separation, dry magnetic separation, flotation and x-ray processing.Another group of iron ore projects involve the mining of hematite ore below the water table. Often the mined ore is wet and sticky. This combination requires high capacity processing of feed material utilising large scrubbers or attritioning units to effectively remove the slimes component present in the feedstock. The fines removed, usually below 1 mm, are then discarded in large tailings storage facilities. Approaches to recovering the saleable material contained within these fines will also be investigated in this paper. This not only implies possible reduction in slimes discard footprint, but also holds potential benefit in augmenting overall yield and recovery of hematite product.CITATION:van Niekerk, L M, 2013. Synthesis of GLORIA side-scan sonar and other geophysical data has provided morpholo- gical and tectonic details of the interaction between the Nazca and South American plates along the Peru Trench (80S-15¦S). Our analyses suggest that a new propagating rift of the Galapagos type is evolving along the Mendana Fracture Zone (MFZ). Subduction induced rift- ing of the Nazca plate is accompanied by organized seafloor spreading for the last 3 Ma at least. GLORIA sonographs and bathymetric mapping show an 8-10¦ divergence in MFZ width towards the Peru Trench. The fracture zone comprises numerous ridges and troughs and a lack of sediment cover in the axial part. Young magnetic lineations (anomalies 1-2A) are observed within the fracture zone wni.cn are orthogonal to the older Nazca plate lineations. The central anomaly narrows west- ward and can be observed up to 400 km seaward of the trench whereas anomaly 2A is terminated about 200 km from the trench axis. Recent SeaMARC II sonar mapping in the region shows large igneous blocks in the Trench axis to the north of MFZ but absent to the south. We believe these blocks represent young seafloor of MFZ rift/spreading center broken off from the ridges as they subduct along the Peru Trench. The MFZ rift is propagating west- ward at a rate of 115 km/Ma (25 km/Ma relative to the South American plate). Given the present rates of accretion at the East Pacific Rise and of propagation along MFZ rift, the Nazca plate will be divided into two parts in about 35 Ma.

This paper reports on the field results of using electronic detonators to improve blast outcomes. OricaÆs electronic detonator, the i-konTM Digital Energy Control System, allows exact and precise timing in 1 ms increments from 0 to 15 000 ms. This gives the blast engineer and shotfirer the ability to fire a blast using any possible desired sequence. In the three years that have followed the release of the i-konTM System, Orica has been re-exploring ways of initiating blasts using the abilities of electronic detonators to improve fragmentation, diggability and crusher throughput. This study began with revisiting fundamental blast theory, lead to generation of new state of the art computer fragmentation modelling and ended with many iterative field trials of i-konTM blasts across a wide selection of mining methods and rock types. At three sites a detailed measurement process was undertaken to compare the results of pyrotechnic blasts with i-konTM blasts. This paper will detail the significant improvements in fragmentation, diggability and crusher throughput that was found at these sites.

Mount Isa Mines Limited has 25 rod and ball mills of various sizes installed in two Concentrators at Mount Isa. A continuing investigation into installation, design and materials of liners for these mills has been in progress since the early sixties. Both manual and mechanical methods of liner installation are used and described. Materials for the various applications have been evaluated, mainly by field trials. Design of liners has also been evaluated by field trials and the history of trials in No.4 Concentrator is given. The purpose of the investigation has been to reduce the cost of mill lining and the life of many linings has been greatly increased as a result of this work.

High pressure (-1.2 GPa) Early Cretaceous granulite facies orthogneisses in Fiordland, New Zealand are in tectonic contact with a cover sequence comprising mid-Palaeozoic amphibolite facies metasediments, subordinate metavolcanic rocks and syntectonic granitic orthogneisses. This cover sequence and the underlying granulites constitute upper and lower crustal plates of a mid-Cretaceous metamorphic core complex whose emplacement was linked to continental rifting and the Late Mesozoic breakup of the Pacific margin of Gondwana. Exhumation of the lower plate granulites occurred in two stages. The first stage was associated with extreme attenuationand tectonic denudation of the cover sequence accompanying emplacement of the core complex, leading to rapid uplift of the granulites but without generating the large volumes of Fiordland-derived sedimentary detritus normally expected if uplift and erosion were the only factors involved in unroofing the granulites. Final uplift and exposure of the granulites at the surface occurred mainly during the last 10 Ma in response to transpression across the mid-Tertiary Alpine Fault and/or the obduction of Fiordland continental crust over oceanic crust of the Tasman Sea.

Paste backfill technology is gaining rapid acceptance in the Canadian mining industry. The authors were able to work on four different mining sites employing paste technology in their operation. In each site the paste backfill is prepared with very fine tailings containing significant amounts of sulphur minerals. The research program involved laboratory testing on samples prepared in the laboratory, on control samples obtained at the backfilll plant during pouring into the stopes and on core samples obtained from drilling in backfilled stopes. The laboratory testing provided detailed knowledge of the mechanical behavior of the paste backfill. The need for a means of measuring the in-situ mechanical properties of the backfill became clear. A review of various trials published in literature and an evaluation of available technology suggested the Cambridge Self-boring Pressuremeter. A first field campaign confirmed the efficiency and dependability of this instrument leading to the conclusion that it offers a very good method for the in situ measurement of paste backfill properties.
