The Mt Morgan Minesite in Central Queensland has been subject to both underground and surface gold mining operations since the late-1800s. The site is largely unrehabilitated and poor quality surface run-off and subsurface leachate is contaminating the nearby Dee River. The site is dominated by a large open cut, which now stores contaminated surface and subsurface run-off. Three models were used to simulate the complex hydrologic processes occurring at the Mt Morgan Mine: a rainfall-run-off model, a groundwater model and a storage behavioural model. Study results showed that the open cut is filling with water and will soon spill large volumes of highly polluted water to the Dee River on a regular basis if no remedial action is taken. This will result in a three-fold increase in pollutant load to the Dee River. Based on a consideration of water quality and quantity it was concluded that the first priority for future minesite water management should be the prevention of spills from the open cut. Potential management options to achieve this objective included surface rehabilitation, catchment diversions, modification of the pump-back system and controlled releases to the Dee River during floods. However, assessing the relative effectiveness of these measures required a thorough understanding of the complex surface and subsurface hydrology of the site. The results of a 100 year simulation of hydrologic processes revealed that previously favoured management options would be ineffective in preventing spills to the river. On this basis, a continuous treat and release strategy was proposed as the only reliable method of preventing future spills. The results of this study demonstrate that good environmental management decisions must be based on an understanding of the relevant physical processes and consideration of cumulative effects over an appropriate time scale.

Vale is the largest iron ore producer in the world. Since the 1970s, Vale has been using reverse cationic flotation to remove siliceous impurities from its iron ores. Whilst this flotation process has operated effectively for many years, it suffers from the problems of high reagent costs and high metal loss.In 2010, CSIRO investigated the use of a reverse anionic flotation process for Vale iron ore. Batch laboratory flotation studies conducted on Vale samples showed significantly reduced reagent costs and improved recovery of iron. In this work, the flotation behaviour of the different impurities in the Vale iron ore sample using reverse cationic and reverse anionic flotation processes is compared. Metso Minerals Process Technology Asia-Pacific (MMPT-AP) has been working with many mining companies worldwide performing æMine to MillÆ or Process Integration and Optimisation (PIO) studies. MMPT-AP has developed a proven methodology to improve the efficiency of the mine-mill interface and gain maximum benefit. The PIO methodology involves rock characterisation, mathematical modelling and simulation to generate a list of operational and control changes for both the mine and concentrator. Following the methodology, the list of recommendations is developed relatively easily; the more challenging part depends on the company. Success of a PIO project relies on the ability of an organisation to implement change û both operationally and culturally: the human element. When a PIO project is started, there is initial interest and commitment from the company. But how can this be maintained? How does an operation know if the benefit continues? MMPT-AP is now developing long-term relationships with clients to ensure that the increased production and improved efficiency continues. Direct and indirect measurements are used to determine the key factors involved and to understand the cause/effect relationships. Simulation tools also can be used to compare current with recommended practices û so when material properties vary over time, the benefits can still be quantified. PIO is about empowerment: by measuring and understanding what parameters affect concentrator performance, the site personnel now have the knowledge to make a difference. Rather than simply reporting variable or poor concentrator performance, operations can predict when production will be affected and put controls in place to prevent it from happening. This requires support and commitment from the company or æbuy inÆ. Ensuring this buy in continues is the challenge facing every company involved in PIO work û but the benefits are well worth it. This paper will review MMPT-APÆs experiences in implementing PIO projects in the long term: from both the consulting and operational viewpoints. MMPT-APÆs involvement with a number of companies will be discussed as examples of what works and what does not.

A computer simulation is being developed for in-situ leaching of unbroken, Zn-Pb-Ag sulphide ore. Ferric chloride is the selected reagent. Experimental work showed that a diffusion control model of the kinetic aspects was better than a surface chemical reaction control model. Entrapped reactive grains were accessible to reagent in the samples tested. Precipitated sulphur did not seriously hinder the reaction.

BHP BillitonÆs Cannington operation began production in 1997 and is presently the largest tonnage and lowest cost single mine producer of both lead and silver in the world. The original design capacity was 1.5 Mtpa and this has progressively increased via a series of debottlenecking projects in both the mining and milling operations. In 2003, 2.39 Mt of ore was mined, whilst 2.31 Mt of ore was milled. In February 2003 Cannington received approval to expand the project to a sustainable capacity of 2.4 Mtpa. This resulted in underground development into the northern zone, upgrades to the concentrator, increased accommodation at site and power station capacity. The Cannington project development team implemented a partnership approach to the project. Fraser Osborn Engineering and Outokumpu Technology worked closely together with the Cannington team to meet all of the project constraints.

This can be achieved through the use of new technologies, the development of innovative work practices andoptimisation of the mining method to suit the mining environment.Big Bell Mine is a 1.7 Mtpa longitudinal sublevel caving operation at a head grade of 3.14 g/t. Annual production is 170 000 ounces of gold. The selection and implementation of bulk emulsion explosives was seen as the logical progression from blow loaded ANFO for the high tonnage rate required from the longitudinal sublevel cave.Prior to the implementation of bulk emulsions an investigation wasrequired to examine the technical and financial benefits available with the introduction of bulk emulsion. This paper examines the review process and the successful implementation of bulk emulsion explosives at Big Bell.

The paper describes a system for providing mine management with a continuous indication of the effectivness of longwall coalface powered supports in controlling roof-to-floor convergence. The system comprises on-face instrumentation monitoring convergence and support leg circuit pressures, a means of transmitting the output of that instrumentation to the surface for collection, and software which presents both a condensed analysis for rapid review of the current state, and extended analyses from which remedial action can be recommended if a problem is identified. The results of a field trial are presented showing that meaningful results can be obtained.

Seventy-nine gold deposits and prospects have been discoveried in the Jiamusi region of northeast China, and constitute one of the most important gold metallogenic belts in China. All these endogenic gold occurrences can be subdivided into three main deposit types: (1) porphyry related; (2) metamorphic-intrusive hosted, and (3) sediment-hosted deposit. The first two types of gold deposit are spatially and temporally related to Mesozoic Yanshanian granitoid intrusions with hydrothermal activity channelled along crustal-scale fissures. The ultimate cause of the Yanshanian magmatism is considered to be the subduction of Pacific oceanic lithosphere beneath the Eurasian continent. In contrast, The chemical sediment-hosted deposit is typified by the Dongfengshan gold deposit, and genetically related to Proterozoic sedimentation and Mesozoic igneous activities.

The Porgera Gold Mine, located in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, has produced over 5 million ounces of Au, since its opening in late 1990. The deposit is located within Upper Cretaceous Papuan Platform sediments approximately 25 km south of the Lagaip Fault, and is spatially and temporally associated with the 6 Ma alkaline Porgera Intrusive Complex.

The progress of longhole open stoping (LHOS) at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (ZC/NBHC) is described. The design of a novel sloped wall longhole stoping method at NBHC which should allow the cuplete extraction of the orebody without the formation of pillars and with minimal dilution of the ore with sandfill is reviewed.

"Underground mine scheduling decision-making has been based on production requirements, equipment productivities and the mine planner’s instincts on the best scheduling strategy for the mine to optimise the net present value (NPV) of a project.In the last few years, innovative software has been developed to optimise underground schedules based on NPV. The schedule optimisation tool (SOT) allows the user to set up scenarios based on grade, metal content, capital and operating costs.This paper discusses the results of two case studies undertaken using the SOT software to optimise the NPV of the projects.In each case study, the SOT software has been applied in two ways:using the original mine planner’s scenario and determining whether the NPV could be improved by changing resource capacitieschanging the scheduling goals to determine whether a different mining strategy would have a better NPV outcome.The outcomes of the case studies demonstrate that the mine layout and design were contributing factors to the overall improvement of the NPV and that SOT has a more noticeable impact on the NPV of projects where less sequence constraints are required, such as geotechnical sequencing and access development.CITATION:Ebbels, A M, 2016. Management of high rates of goaf gas emissions between 4000 and 6000 L/s of methane gas in longwall panels is a challenging issue, particularly in start-up areas of the panels. There is a need for investigation of the effect of various goaf gas drainage concepts and techniques, and development of effective gas drainage strategies for management of high goaf gas emissions in start-up areas of the longwall panels. This paper presents the results of various computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations that were carried out to investigate the effect of different goaf gas drainage strategies and combinations for gas management in the start-up area of the longwall panels. Results indicated that the gas (methane) concentration in goaf holes on the tailgate (TG) side vary between 50 and 75 per cent under the simulated field conditions with flat coal seam gradients. The results also indicated that operation of more goaf holes for draining the goaf gas on the TG side results in high ingress of oxygen and further reduction in gas concentration in goaf gas drainage holes. The simulations also included scenarios with goaf gas drainage holes on the maingate (MG) side, TG cut-through seal and near the start-up area. There is a plethora of activities that have been, and continue to be, performed to improve the health, safety and well-being of workers involved in resource industry activities. These activities include implementation of risk management systems, performing risk assessments, constructing bow-ties, implementing critical control management systems, undertaking personal, process and functional safety initiatives, implementing psychological and physical health as well as industrial hygiene programs. Despite the significant work that has occurred over the last several decades, unacceptable levels of fatalities, injuries and illnesses continue to persist as evidenced by Safe Work Australia statistics.

A 200 000 tpa heap leach demonstration plant was approved by the Murrin Murrin Joint Venture (MMJV) in December 2005 and engineering commenced in January 2006. The demonstration plant will utilise stockpiled ore reject material (æscatsÆ) and extract nickel and cobalt. Limited production from the demonstration plant is expected by the end of 2006. The demonstration plant will enable the company to fully investigate and understand all associated technical issues over the next 12 to 18 months, including the potential to expand the heap leaching operation to a commercial scale. In parallel, the MMJV will continue a research and development program to improve and expand the application of its heap leaching technology.

A scheme is presented whereby the complexities of design and operation of a hydraulically powered coalmine support are modelled using the finite element method. This enables predictions to be made of the interaction of the support with its environment in a variety of operating conditions. The model is a two dimensional representation. The modelling scheme was applied in two case studies. In the first, the performance of a four leg support was uprated by increasing the front leg force. The finite element model enabled changes in overall support performance to be verified. In the second case study, the change in lateral force developed by a two leg support was assessed with changes in support operating height and floor foundation stiffness. The modelling scheme is capable of further development with the possibility of extending the model into three dimensions and the addition of control elements that would enable an actual mining sequence to be Represented.

According to the temporal and spatial distribution of regional metallogenesis, the Pacific Rim can be divided into four global metallogenetic systems. The Asia-Australia W-Sn metallogenetic belt is the typical representative of intracontinen- tal metallogenetic systems. This belt resulted from Mesozoic and partly pre-Mesozoic tectonic magmatism, mainly re- lated to S-type granite of crustal source, that was generated by collisional orogeny combined with oceanic subduction in intracontinental and continental margin settings. Based on the concept of metallogenetic series, there is a group of min- eralised ore types showing a definite spatial and temporal distribution from endogenetic to exogenetic. These metalloge- netic series are widely distributed in the Asia-Australia W-Sn metallogenetic belt, and are well developed in Southeast China. Five metallogenetic series and two petro-minerogenesis evolution models have been established according to their tectonic settings, various types of granitoids and metallogenetic evolution.

Acclaimed as one of the most remarkable orebodies anywhere on account of its length and richness, the Oroya Shoot occurs on the eastern side of the Kalgoorlie gold mining district close to the contact of a fine-grained with a coarse-grained greenstone, and in association with sediments. In the same stratigraphic position on the synclinal flanks of a large drag fold there are a number of other flat ore pipes, smaller, but almost as rich in tenor. Although differing in control structure they are believed to be related genetically as all show a characteristic development of a bright-green ore known locally as "green leader". Folding and bedding structures have played an important part in formation of the ore shoots.INTRODUCTIONThe Oroya Shoot is the biggest individual bonanza of Kalgoorlie's Golden Mile. It has been stoped almost continuously over a length of 4,300 ft., and about 2,000,000 oz. of gold have been won from it. Naturally pillars are not left in the best sections of such an orebody and the detailed geology of stoped out portions can only be inferred from examination of adjacent workings.No mention is made in the literature of the actual makeup of the orebody although a few structures are shown on some of the old cross sections. A diagrammatic cross section, Fig. 1, adapted from Stillwell (1929) illustrates the form of the Oroya Shoot.Gustafson (1937) drew attention to the role of folding, previously unrecognized, in Kalgoorlie geology, and indicated that the Oroya Shoot is associated with a minor drag fold on the east limb of the Brownhill Syncline, itself part of a larger left hand drag on the Central Anticline. The latter in turn appears to be part of a regional right hand fold system as shown by Campbell (1953).

Earth is main resource of energy and up to now; the energy has been derived mainly from natural resources. Mining industry has significant influence to the nature, sometimes evokes a devastation of nature. On the other hand we have got a lot of nice examples that good preparation, sensitive mining practice and consistent reclamation can minimise the negative effects. All the mentioned problems calls for effective tools for mine design, mine operation and mine reclamation. Third millennium brings next challenge given by advances in information and communication technology. The development of very sophisticated software tools provides to technical systems some features of autonomous æthinkingÆ and intelligent behaviour. We can find large effort and a lot of scientific papers reflecting last advancement in science and technology and providing inspiration for new mining technology of third millennium called Intelligent Mine. Some aspects related to creation and utilisation of æIntelligent ModelsÆ as a background of æIntelligent MineÆ are presented and discussed in this paper.
