The series of events leading to the adoption of more complex flotation circuits for coal have been reviewed. In essence, it has been concluded that ac- ceptable overall flotation recovery will only be obtained when efficient distri- bution of collector over all the component feed size fractions is ensured. The achievement of this goal is most likely to be obtained by feed classification and separate flotation of appropriate size fractions. The adoption of such a phil- osophy, however, imposes a number of process problems of both a chemical and an engineering nature. Some of these problems have been identified and possible solutions discussed. A case is emerging for the development of a new generation of flotation cells designed specifically for the flotation of classified coal and for the development of a series of novel re- agents which have the propensity to float middling particles.

THE Taranaki oil-field is situated on the western side of the North Island of New Zealand, at about its widest part, and may be said to be the most compact and fertile part of the Dominion, for, with the exception of the. upper half of Mount Egmont and of the ranges adjoining, which absorb 36,000 acres, the whole of the area, miuus what is taken up by the rivers land streams-is suitable for settlement, and certainly two-thirds is good land. The gross area oE the district is 2,417,299 acres.The principle rivers are the Wanganui, Mokau, Waitara, Patea, and Waiwakaiho. Mount Egmont, which is 8260 ft. high, used to be called Taranaki, and from it the district takes its name (the Maori meaning of which is "sloping peak ").

The Australian mining industry has changed dramatically over the past 20 years in terms of mining methods, mining equipment and human resource policies. The industryÆs approach to safety and health in terms of attitudes, style of legislation, and risk management techniques has also changed significantly. These changes have had and continue to have major impacts on the design of underground mine ventilation systems. In some areas, trends are clearly emerging. In other areas, mine ventilation planning remains very æreactiveÆ and is performing poorly in terms of providing a safe and healthy work environment at a reasonable cost. New concepts involving the role of ramps and shafts, the provision of refrigerated air, æventilation on demandÆ and newe gress and entrapment approaches are likely to be incorporated into mine planning and operating practices over the next ten years. This paper discusses these and other trends and identifies some likely future developments in the area of hardrock mine ventilation.

Increasing demands on quality of metallurgical grade alumina and for lower production costs led to the development of a new fluid bed calcining process. The process, jointly developed in Germany by Vereinigte Aluminium Werke A.G. and Lurgi Gesellschaften m.b.H., takes advantage of modern chemical engineering methods such as counter-current flow of combustion air and solids, direct heat-exchange between combustion air and fine solids and near stoichiometric combustion of oil in a fluid bed. Using a two-stage Venturi-type suspension preheater for heat-recovery from combustion flue- gases, the circulating fluid bed technique with internal oil combustion at 2.2000 F for the calcining step and 'a five-stage fluidized bed cooler for heat recovery from calcines, the process gives an outstanding heat- efficiency. In a first industrial plant for 560 sh. t. alumina per day heat consumption figures of less than 1.400 BTU/lb A12O3 were achieved.

A bewildering array of process control instrumentation is currently available for mineral processing plants. For sequencing control, special purpose microprocessors or the process control computer can be used. Where continuous control is required, then the choice is between pneumatic controllers, electronic controllers, shared display micro- processor systems and direct digital control. The benefits of each system are discussed and the advantages of using direct digital control in mineral processing plants are outlined. The factors which need to be considered when selecting control systems for new plants are listed. Instrumentation systems designed by Fluor Australia are used as case studies to illustrate the selection process. For established plants, conversion to direct digital can be advantageous, and case studies are given. However, replacement of existing systems requires justification based on a productivity improvement which will allow the control equipment to be paid for within a specific time period. The flash smelting technology employed in Jinchuan demands a better mineral processing concentrate with an MgO content below 6.5 per cent. Two ways for MgO removal have been investigated in detail based on properties and process mineralogical characteristics of the rich ores in the number one mining area in Jinchuan. The key to the first way is the use of a new flowsheet which has two-stage grinding and separation followed by single-stage regrinding and multi-stage cleaning for the rougher concentrate. The second approach utilises two novel reagents, AT-131 and AT-202, which have been developed recently. Excellent metallurgical performance has been obtained in a commercial test and a batch test, respectively. The MgO content of flotation concentrate can be reduced to about six per cent.

Numerical modelling is an effective aid for the planning and design of underground coal mines. With funding from the National Energy Research Development and Demonstration Program, CSIRO Division of Geomechanics has produced a workstation environment which will allow the Australian Coal Mining Industry access to a wide range of numerical design models. The emphasis is on usability and simplicity and the long-term aim is that the techniques should be used routinely at the mine site, so that, in the future, design of a new underground mine will routinely involve modelling of each proposed layout.Each of the five numerical analysis programs, FESOFt, FLAC, MNLAY, FEBLK and UDEC has both strengths and weaknesses. Some analyses with each program demonstrate areas when; observed in situ behaviour in underground coal mines has been successfully modelled, and the results of site monitoring provide a basis for comparison with the predictions of numerical models.

Biomineralisation is the process by which microorganisms mediate and catalyse inorganic reactions so as to form new mineral assemblages. The goal of biomineralisation as a remediation tool is to control microbial processes and their environment so as to sequester and immobilise specific toxic metals within exceptionally strong bonds of neo-formed mineral assemblages. In this way, the bound metals are no longer mobile within a geological time-scale. Applied biomineralisation uses microorganisms, which are isolated from a metal waste environment and are selected for their ability to rapidly catalyse neo-mineral development from dissolved or leachable metals. A typical waste environment will contain microbes that contribute to the mobilisation of metal contaminants as well as microbes that possess the potential for remineralising available metals. Selection and augmenting the correct combination of bacteria and eliminating the competing mineral degrading reactions are the key to applying biomineralisation as an in situ remediation process. Applied biomineralisation harnesses the microbesÆ ability to stabilise toxic soluble metals into non-mobile mineralassemblages. This paper will discuss and demonstrate the biomineralisation process through several case studies including the Summitville mine site in Colorado, the McCoy-Cove mine in Nevada, the Argonaut mine in California, and an historic lead site in Crooksville, Ohio.

Water is becoming an increasingly valuable commodity in Australia and the mining community is finding itself competing with pastoralists, domestic consumers and industry for access to what is an essential but finite resource. This paper will provide an overview of various legislative regimes in Australia governing water resources, and will review some of the fundamental issues which should be considered by mining companies when contracting with other parties for the supply of water. The paper will focus on mechanisms to secure access to water for mining purposes, and will deal with the following issues: Grants of water entitlements under legislation û (navigating the legislative requirements necessary to facilitate the taking and use of water for mining activities) The paper will focus on the key legislative requirements for securing access to water in Queensland, Western Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory, and will examine: compliance with regulatory processes for securing water entitlements through the grant of water allocations, licences and permits, etc; and dealings with water entitlements (ie statutory mechanisms for transferring water entitlements on a temporary or permanent basis). Securing access to water under water entitlements through contractual means. The paper will also review of some of the fundamental issues which should be considered by mining companies when contracting with holders of water entitlements for the supply of water from both groundwater and surface water sources. These issues include (inter alia): securing appropriate rights to take and use water in compliance with relevant legislation, the necessity to protect the validity of underlying water entitlements, ensuring the security of supply for the contract term, access rights affecting water entitlements and other important issues relating to the security of water entitlements for miners.

Conventional models, based on pulp kinetics, were regressed directly to steady-state data from a nine-stage platinum flotation plant, to provide a basis for optimisation studies. æFroth factorsÆ were used to characterise the froth in each stage and a ædepressant factorÆ was used for gangue minerals, to account for addition of depressant to the cleaners. These factors improved the fit, but differences between plant and model of up to 50 per cent were still present in a number of streams in the cleaning circuit. A new model was developed, which incorporated two rate constants for the recycle of particles from the froth. These parameters provided a workable approximation of the distribution of probabilities of particles being recycled in plant cells, depending upon where particles appeared at the surface. The feed streams were characterised by two pulp kinetic parameters and the above recycle parameters, for all minerals and all stages. The fit to the data was improved very significantly, when compared to the use of conventional pulp-based models with several pulp rate parameters. This relatively simple model did not require additional data from batch tests and it was suitable for plant simulations.Simulations of various strategies for plant operation were tested, allowing the simulator to vary the concentrate flows from all or some of the stages, in order to maximise platinum recovery. The simulator was imbedded in an automatic optimiser and constraints on chrome content or mass flow of final concentrate were used. The simulations of the existing circuits demonstrated that an improvement in recovery, (for a constant concentrate mass) of about 0.5 per cent was possible, by optimising all concentrate flows. A significant reduction in the flow of scavenger concentrate and an increase in the recycle flows in the cleaners were noted. The results of simulations of various changes to the circuit configuration are also discussed. An increase in recovery of 1.4 per cent (for constant concentrate mass) has been achieved in recent simulations, through circuit changes. However, it was necessary to keep the mass pull of concentrate, per unit area, within typical limits.

New Zealand is an exposed part of a sub- continent that was detached from Australia when the Tasman Sea opened in the Late Cretaceous. The pre-separation rocks occur in three main belts. A western belt or terrane was part of Antarctica, was continuous with southern Australian rocks, and was moved eastwards in the Mid Devonian. A central belt of Hokonui and Caples rocks can be correlated broadly with the Gympie Terrane of eastern Queensland. It was an island arc, fore-arc basin and accretionary wedge system, and it was accreted to eastern Australasia in the Mid Triassic. The third belt consists of Torlesse rocks and was possibly emplaced over the Caples rocks by at least three pulses of strike-slip, in the Triassic, the Jurassic and the Cretaceous. The three episodes of strike-slip can be correlated with regional events in eastern Australia. Pre-Cainozoic New Zealand was an amalgam of terranes that had moved eastwards from south of Australia and southwards from east of Australia.

To secure a sustainable competitive advantage some smelters may need strategies based on flexibility in feed and product ranges depending on immediate future projections of profitability. This paper explores the technical requirements for strategic diversity in smelting, leaving procurement, marketing and contractual considerations aside. The days when a smelting operation is tied specifically to say only processing zinc concentrates are perhaps drawing to a close. While internationally traded mineral concentrates are available, attractive business opportunities must exist for fully diversified custom smelters. Certain new and emerging technologies have inherent characteristics that are evaluated in this context. The paper identifies the basic building blocks that will permit such a scenario and assesses the technical feasibility. The ability to respond flexibly to environmental pressures is highlighted as being of paramount importance.

In this report,the results of the large diameter drilling tests in coal seams assisted with water jet are described. An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for a major mining development typically has to address various aspects of surface water management, including some which generally tend to be the more contentious: the diversion of rivers and creeks from areas disturbed by mining, and their rehabilitation; the effective management of disturbed area run-off via the collection, containment and treatment of contaminated water on site in sedimentation dams; the collection, containment and treatment of mine pit water; the decommissioning of surface water storages; final void water quality; and water discharge criteria. Environmental Impact Assessment processes for proposed mining developments in Australia at the state and commonwealth level usually involve a form of Initial Advice Statement (or Notice of Intent), Terms of Reference, an EIS, and a Supplementary Report (or similar) which responds to agency and public comment on the EIS. The EIS is used by approval agencies to decide the acceptability of the Project, and to set the conditions of approval. The conditions are often in the form of a state-issued æOperational LicenceÆ or similar. With mining, the initial approval at the EIS stage is often just a pre-cursor to various other planning related approvals, including obtaining a mining lease. Afterwards, mine plans and plans of operations must be submitted to government at various stages of the mineÆs life, ostensibly to provide the detailed mine planning over periods of one û five years. Despite all this additional planning and documentation beyond the submission of the EIS, government approval agencies are increasingly not satisfied with conceptual water management designs and commitments to an outcome (such as meeting a specified water quality standard) in the EIS. Agencies are also requiring sufficient water management design information to be convinced that the outcomes are achievable. To assist proponents of major mining developments, the Queensland Government has published Technical Guidelines for water management, and Environment Australia has published a æBest Practice Environmental Management in MiningÆ booklet on water management. In addition, the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC. 2000) has published Water Quality Guidelines which provide an approach to water management, and provide receiving water investigation trigger criteria. So, what are the water management issues that are likely to be the subject of comment, debate and negotiation prior to the EIS being approved? and what commitments may a mining proponent have to make in order to convince the approval agencies that sufficient investigation and design has been provided? This paper provides some answers to this question, by reference to recent major mining proposals which the author has managed through state and commonwealth Environmental Impact Assessment processes.

The Golden Cross mine is a Joint Venture between Coeur Gold New Zealand Limited, as Manager, and Viking Mining Limited The mine is targeting Zero Lost Time Accidents as a goal. The Golden Cross operation produces gold and silver from both underground and open pit. The mine is based on an epithermal gold-silver deposit. Treatment of ore is on a campaign basis for each ore type (ie underground or open pit). Milling is conventional SAG Mill and Ball Mill grinding circuit followed by carbon in pulp recovery of gold and silver. All tailing materials are treated through the Cyanisorb process to reduce cyanide levels prior to being discharged into the tailings dam.

The Tui mine site is situated on the NW flank of Mt. Te Aroha, at approximately 400 m altitude. During underground mining operations two lead-copper-zinc ore bodies were exploited and processed on site. The legacy of the mining operation is a barren dam containing over 100,000 m3 of sulphide-rich tailings. The Tui mine site is arguably the worst case of environmental degradation resulting from past mining activity in New Zealand. Although the impacted area (approximately 4 ha) is extremely small by international standards, acid mine drainage (AMD) emanating from the abandoned tailings dam and mine adits has severely contaminated local streams and prevented natural plant recolonisation of the site for more than 20 years.

Stereological transformation relies on knowledge of the textural characteristic that governs the relationship between the one-, two- and three-dimensional liberation spectrum. Transformation functions can be built from fractionation of real mineralogical particles. Alternatively, transformation functions can be built from simulated textures, geometrical textures or artificial textures. These transformation functions can be useful when the texture of an ore has not yet been characterised for the preliminary assessment of liberation. Recently, Lin et al (1995) developed a methodology for generating such an artificial texture. The artificial texture can be used to produce broken particles of known volumetric composition. Data from image analysis on several artificially generated samples is readily available, and can be used to build the associated stereological transformation function. In this work, the methodology for calculating the transformation function from LinÆs artificial texture is presented. The new texture is implemented for stereological transformation applications.

Block cave mines are often thought of as rock factories where high volumes of production are mined from a fixed area suggesting little requirement for geological input and control. Yet caving operations have peculiar and specific technical requirements from prefeasibility through to post-mining reconciliation. Whilst essential elements such as resource definition, geological interpretation and sampling strategies are common to all mining methods, planning for a block cave requires a different emphasis and philosophical approach in how we deal with these issues. We will examine why a geoscientist’s input is critical towards the successful planning, design and monitoring of a caving operation.
