DIVERSITY There are plenty of examples to show that diversity has been the fundamental downfall of many organisations, particularly when you consider the international position. What about core business, the return of companies to key competence directions and market focus. The stockmarket for instance defines groups and companies in key groups of core business. The expectation is that companies toe the line and do not diversify across their areas of defined expertise. In essence, the market has given notice that the requirements are to focus and stick to our core business. So what right does the conference have to suggest that diversity is the key to prosperity. Hasn't the organiser read the book, studied the history, listened to the market - obviously not. Have they got it wrong, My feeling and belief is no - the organisers have got it right. However, the matter is not as simple as first perceived. What is Diversity, or Diversification as I would prefer? Is it a product position? Is it a geographic position? Is it an expansion or change in services offered? Does a gold mining company diversify into copper or diamonds or aluminium or nickel? Does a gold miner in Australia diversify into China or Kazakhstan or West Africa? How do the two relate? They don't. A successful company will always possess a 'core competence' not so much a 'core business'. The best example of this is the service company extraordinaire - McDonalds. They don't sell hamburgers or french fries, they sell a service, a convenience, a lifestyle. The core business is hamburgers and if McDonalds were to diversify further into new styles of hamburgers, I suggest to you they would fail. But if McDonalds were to diversify into other products based on their 'core competence', provision of service, then I would suggest to you they would be very successful. HPGRs (high pressure grinding rolls) have been developed within the last decades for energy efficient processing of a wide variety of ores. Special interest has been raised by projects increasing the capacities of processing plants by installing HPGRs prior to ball mills. Bond ball mill tests have been used for decades as a base for ball mill dimensioning in mineral circuits. For final CAPEXOPEX considerations of the processing circuit, one key question is about the level of grinding energy split between HPGR and downstream grinding stages. This is especially interesting if the downstream process comprises multiple grinding stages combined with separation steps. The paper presents investigations on grinding energy consumption, size distribution and microfracturing of HPGR products, which affect the efficiency of the whole comminution and sorting process.

Porphyry copper, gold and molybdenum deposits form in subduction-related settings in association with calc-alkalic or alkalic magmatism. Hydrothermal alteration assemblages are zoned, with potassic cores and propylitic haloes overlain by extensive domains of clay alteration and silicification (lithocaps). Copper sulfides, gold and molybdenite typically occur in veins or hydrothermal breccias, and less significantly as wall rock replacements. Epithermal deposits may form above or to the side of porphyry systems, and may be juxtaposed into the core of a porphyry deposit if rapid uplift and exhumation occur through the life of the magmatic-hydrothermal system. Volcanichydrothermal breccia pipes (ædiatremesÆ) commonly form late in the life of a porphyry system. They may contain clasts of porphyry-style mineralisation, and can host significant epithermal gold resources. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Bauxite Resources Limited is grade drilling in its Western Australian Darling Range tenements to firm up resource definition and to develop mine plans. The Darling Range bauxite is generally in shallow deposits with minimum overburden. In the northern tenements, the ore is characterised by a higher silica layer which may extend from 0.5 to 1.5 m below, which high grade bauxite is found to a depth of four to 7 m. When grade drilling samples are taken, every 0.5 m and the recovered sample is weighed, logged and bagged. To eliminate splitting errors, the whole sample over the short interval is pulverised. Twinning holes variations are observed when using various drill rigs. Diamond core has been shown to give close to 100 per cent recovery and grades have been verified by digging bulk samples. As such, diamond core is used as the reference. It is intended to include sonic drilling as an alternative to diamond cores. This presentation details and attempts to explain the reasons for the observed variations in the various drilling methods used by Bauxite Resources Limited. "One of the key risks to the success of a mining operation is the accuracy of the estimates of both the economic mineral and any accompanying contaminants contained within the ore reserve. Misrepresenting the mineralogical characteristics of the ore reserve can result in considerable financial investment in an operation that is in fact uneconomic and/or carries a significant environmental risk. This in turn can result in an unplanned closure of the operation with associated financial, environmental and social legacy. One way to minimise this risk is to undertake high density resource sampling to gain a better understanding of the resource characteristics. However, such an approach is expensive, time-consuming and often impractical. The risk of not having an accurate model is typically assessed during a feasibility study utilising a Monte Carlo simulation method or some form of sensitivity analysis. Importantly, the error margins used in these types of analyses are often based on subjective or very general criteria such as ‘professional judgement’ or an ‘industry standard’. This presentation introduces a conditional simulation method for developing a range of mineralogical distribution models. Based broadly on the method outlined in Journel and Kyriakidis (2004) the proposed approach develops this work further. It combines a geostatistical analysis of the available data with automated mine design software to provide a rigorous method for assessing the confidence in the mineralogical characterisation of the ore reserve. The process is based on simulating possible mine plans based on the statistical characteristics of the available resource sample data. These plans are then assessed against high resolution resource models generated using a Sequential Gaussian Simulation method. The outcome is confidence intervals for important characteristics of the ore reserve estimate relative to the actual resource. These confidence intervals are an objective and transparent measure important for assessing closure risks and represent an improvement over common practice.CITATION:Trembath, D, 2016. Increasing attention is being focussed worldwide on the strategic environmental assessment of mining projects, including consideration of cumulative environmental effects. In New Zealand there is now an end in sight for inappropriate delays in resource consent approval of responsible mining projects. This paper investigates six case examples of recently consented mining and quarrying projects, whose applications were notified. It also explores the nature of delays that occurred, the factors that contributed to the delays, and whether the consent process delivered fair and effective public participation and desirable environmental outcomes.

Many aspects of the physical layout of manufacturing plants and storage facilities for explosives are governed by so-called quantity-distances tables. Both the British and the American tables were originally derived from an analysis of the injuries and the building damage documented by an early 20th century compilation of significant accidental explosions. However, progressive changes in explosive process technology and in building techniques have reduced the relevance of much of this historic data set. Extensive scientific research has been conducted over recent decades to characterise the potential injuries and damage from accidental explosions under more modern conditions. Subsidence data resulting from longwall mining in the northern part of the Newcastle Coalfield of New South Wales has been reviewed. Themain factors influencing subsidence variability in this area (apart from width/height ratio) are strong bridging strata, the effects of the first major goaf fall, mining direction and depth of cover. In 1987 the NSW Department of Mineral Resources produced a guide to subsidence prediction for the Newcastle Coalfield which is still widely used. The current study shows this guide to be no longer appropriate for this area. An alternative prediction curve, incorporating more recent data, is suggested.

A problem with secondary breaking at one of the mines of Pasminco Mining led to a study of new rock breaking technologies. Many of the techniques being developed had emerged from the thrust in the USA for continuous drill=break excavation. Such approaches to rock breaking highlighted the applicability of what would normally be classified as tunnelling techniques, to the secondary breaking sector - and possibly the reverse. As a direct result of the investigations for suitable technologies, Pasminco Mining supported the development of two improved rock breaking methods specifically targeting secondary breaking, one of which could be applied to continuous excavation.

Accounting for borehole damage in analytical modelling of explosively generated stress waves is important for predicting the finer details of the stress wave patterns observed in the field. The classical Sharpe's [19421 concept of an effective borehole larger than the initial borehole diameter has been widely accepted to explain material damage around a borehole. A new analytical model based on dynamic compaction is advanced to predict far-field stress wave patterns. This model supports field data corresponding to reduced frequency of oscillations and increased damping. The present model recovers the earlier result when compaction around the borehole representing borehole damage is ignored.

This discussion will present a case study in developing solutions to a metropolitan quarryÆs public relations, legal, environmental, and productivity problems. It details an extensive and detailed project to address the blasting practice in a medium sized quarry that is surrounded by residential and industrial zones. The principle work was done over four months duration during the normal production season. It included detailed drilling and blasting audits for baseline information. In addition, geologic characterisation, seismic modeling, correction of deviations from best practices, and implementation and monitoring of precise electronic timing to provide dramatic solutions for the quarry. The quarry is in the near suburbs of a large metropolitan city. It is framed on two sides by residential municipalities and on two sides by industrial zones. At the start of the project, the quarry was in court as a result of the lawsuit by one of the neighboring towns that was suing to close the quarry. The lawsuit had progressed to the advanced stage where in the Judge had appointed an arbitrator to make the decision of continued operation. This arbitrator was to observe our progress and recommend to the Judge the disposition of the case.

A pilot plant has been constructed for the low temperature carboni-zation of Wallarah (N,S,W6) coal at the rate of 300 pounds per hour. The plant was built and tested at Australian Mineral Development Laboratories for Broken Hill Pty, Ltd. Char product was required within the specifi-cation 15.5 `S' 1 per cent volatile matter. The design was based c atz an entrained state carbonizer developed by Parry and U.S. Bureau of Mines co-workers at Denver, U.S.A. The method involved the carbonizatioan of fine coal by entrainment with air in an externally heated reactor.. The heat required for carbonization of tits coal was supplied to the be, both through the reactor walls and also by internal cambustion of products .

The Mount Kasi gold deposit in Vanua Levu represents an epithermal, high sulphur, gold-enargite system occurring within a volcanic caldera of Middle to Upper Miocene age. High level breccia pipes flare upward and form flat lying, near surface, mushroom shaped sheets parallel and near to the present land surface. The upper portions of the pipes contain explosion breccias which are capped by sandy siliceous sinter-like beds and are cut by alunite veins. Outlying intercalated scoriasceous lavas and breccia sheets show evidence of subsidence within a shallow basin. Detailed mapping of breccia types, intensity of silicification and the presence of multiple quartz veining and enargite abundance outlined blocks of more consistent gold mineralization within the breccias. This work has provided a model for mineralization which will aid future exploration and ore reserve estimations. A significant eluvial concentration of gold occurs in soils overlying the breccia sheet.

Shortwall continuous mining as first introduced at Burwood colliery, and currently being used at John Darling, Lambton, and Corrimal collieries, is a method of coal winning which was pioneered in the Newcastle district. The system uses individual hydraulic self-advancing chocks for roof support and the coal winning operation is by continuous miners and shuttle cars. Where physical conditions are suitable the system provides a safe, efficient and economically viable basis for pillar extraction. Shortwall operations have been conducted successfully in the Victoria and Dudley seam, near the coastal fringe of the Newcastle district and are now being tried out in the more difficult conditions of the Bulli seam in the Illawarra district.

Tailings storage facilities are geotechnically complicated structures that develop heterogeneous strength profiles and varied porewater conditions. The monitoring of porewater pressures is one of the only direct measurements that can be performed to monitor the performance of a facility throughout its life and is of particular importance in upstream facilities. Foundation underdrainage, continuous and staged tailings deposition, climate inputs (rain, snow, humidity, evaporation, etc), and stratified tailings permeabilities can complicate this critical measurement that introduces uncertainty to stability analyses. These difficult conditions manifest in vibrating wire piezometer measurements as very low or negative pressure readings, both of which are within the instrument’s range of accuracy. However, the data can be difficult to interpret, and a range of interpretations are adopted from optimistic low phreatic surfaces to conservative fully saturated tailings. Where tailings are potentially liquefiable, these very low readings introduce further uncertainty regarding the pore space saturation ratio and liquefaction potential above the estimated phreatic surface. This area of uncertainty is the vadose zone, and its affect on tailings behaviour is not well understood. The two facilities analysed in this paper are upstream, raised embankments with tailings classified as clayey, sandy silt that have been found to be potentially liquefiable. The vibrating wire piezometers (VWP) at both sites show very low or negative readings when they are initially installed near the surface and then go through cycles of re-saturation and de-saturation. Eventually the readings settle as the VWPs are buried deeper within the tailings. The instrumented sections within the tailings column do not show consistent readings that would be indicative of a hydrostatic phreatic surface at either site. Rather, they are highly variable and can be interpreted as either representing a high phreatic surface within the tailings or as a ‘perched’ phreatic zone within the tailings layers. How the VWP data is interpreted has a significant impact on how the facilities are raised and operated. The design outcome for Site 1, which adopts a lower phreatic surface, results in an embankment that meets factor of safety (FoS) requirements under residual strength conditions without any buttressing. Conversely, a conservative (high) phreatic surface has been adopted for Site 2 and has resulted in the facility requiring a significant buttress to meet FoS under residual strength conditions.

This paper primarily describes the application of geology to the different mining methods employed in a large underground mine. The steeply dipping stratiform Silver/Lead/Zinc mineralisation at Mount Isa include up to 28 mineable orebodies. The orebodiea are mined by cut and fill, sublevel benching and sublevel open stoping; the method chosen depending mainly on orebody geomechanics.The sources and methods of data collection, and the interpretation process undertaken, are described. The paper emphasises the different geological input required, by each individual mining method, to provide the necessary production and strata control. This input contributes significantly to the success and efficiency of the operations.

The magnesite deposits near Young, N.S.W., occur in decomposed serpentine rock below a soil. and alluvial cover. They show considerable variation in both quality and depth which greatly hampers mining operations. Seismic refraction techniques afford methods of conducting detailed and reconnaissance surveys which yield a depth and velocity analysis of the serpentine/magnesite refractor. The measured seismic velocities may be used as an index of the presence and quality of the deposits. The Seismic Timer which was used in the test surveys is a simplified seismograph which makes use of seismic reciprocity by replacing the conventional seismic shotpoints with geophone stations and the conventional geophone stations with impact points of a sledge hammer. Thi,s enables the use of detailed seismic refraction techniques which yield the depth and velocity analysis of the refractor.INTRODUCTIONThe magnesite deposits near Young, N.S.W., were produced by a process of leaching and enrichment of magnesium in serpentine rock. The magnesite occurs in nodular form emplaced in decomposed rock at shallow depths below soil and alluvium. The depth ranges from close to the surface down to some tens of feet. The deposits are patchy and show considerable variation in both quality and depth, giving riseto considerable difficulties in mining operations.Due to the thorough leaching of the surface material, geochemical tests carried out so far have not proved satisfactory for locating the pockets of magnesite enrichment.It was decided to test the application of detailed shallow seismic refraction methods to the investigation of both the depth and quality of the deposits. The Ok Tedi copper and gold mining project is located in the headwaters of the Fly River system in western Papua New Guinea. The project's Feasibility Study was completed in 1979, and in- cluded a preliminary environmental assessment and an environ- mental management program. Construction commenced in 1981, an environmental impact study was completed in 1982, mining and treatment of gold ore commenced in 1984, staged construction of copper ore processing facilities took place during 1986-1988, and a further major environmental study was carried out for the operat- ing mine during 1986-1989. A very considerable data base of environmental information has been assembled by means of a comprehensive monitoring program. Environmental management criteria applied to the Project have reflected the stages and nature of development and operation. Criteria have been designed to regulate potential environmental impacts in the Fly River. An Acceptable Particulate Level of suspended sediment is the principal criterion. Compliance is con- ditional upon -a limited reduction in fish biomass, and upon dis- solved and particulate copper concentrations not exceeding predicted values at various locations throughout the river system. The criteria were established by the Government of Papua New Guinea following evaluation of environmental studies undertaken by the mining company. Compliance is checked by a detailed monitoring program, frequent reporting and statistical evaluation of monitoring results.

Any project carries a number of challenges and risks. Inappropriate design, poor project management, time, industrial disputation and capital over runs are all areas which can impact on a project cash flows and return on investment. In the resource Industry you have the added complexity and risk of geology which is difficult to predict and sometimes unforgiving. The Dartbrook Mine was designed and constructed as a high output longwall mine and has overcome a number of hurdles to produce over 2.3 million tonnes for the first year of operation. A number of problems were encountered during construction which resulted in the inseam development being delayed for six months. Dartbrook people have demonstrated they can manage adversity and produce world class results. The mine has been through a very steep learning curve during 1997 and with this experience behind the mine is now producing at an annualised rate of 3.4 MTPA.

"The benefits of measuring blast movement to reduce ore loss and dilution have been recognised by many people for many years and various methods have been used with limited success. Geita Gold Mine is running the pilot study on the blast movement monitoring (BMM) system which is a revolutionary method developed and patented by the University of Queensland and Blast Movement Technology (BMT). The system consists of directional transmitters placed within the shot prior to blasting, which are then located after the blast with a special detector and then the data is processed with purpose-designed software.As part of continuous improvement on grade control, Geita Gold Mine is running a research project in all operating pits with the objective of: quantifying the three-dimensional blast muck pile movement and finally utilise the movement data to define post-blast ore polygons and incorporate the movement dynamics during block modelling,quantify the potential savings for ore loss and dilution,improve mine geologists knowledge of blast dynamics, andstimulate greater co-operation between drill and blast engineers and geologists to achieve optimum blast designs.To any operation with selective mining, it is critical to the economics of an operation to control ore loss and dilution; getting it wrong will result in significant lost revenue.
