Valuable data for geotechnical interpretation and integration into effective Australian underground mine planning may often be available, yet is not always fully appreciated or utilised, particularly in the early stages of mine planning or in due diligence studies. There may be considerable benefits associated with early prioritisation of geotechnical evaluation and impact on mine planning. Unidentified, misinterpreted, or ill-defined adverse geological and related geotechnical resource characteristics can pose significant business risk to underground coal projects and operations. Preliminary resource definition in the early conceptual mine planning stages attributes significant focus (entirely warranted) on resource quality and structural geology constraints. Yet detailed geotechnical data analysis and interpretation, which may have a substantial down stream impact and sensitivity with respect to future mine planning strategies, at times is given lower priority, or scoped and resourced in the later stages of a bankable feasibility study. Through extensive mine planning experience and observation of downstream process impacts, it has been found there is often data available for geotechnical analysis that does not readily stand out or is not adequately understood or utilised, available at the early (conceptual) stages of mine planning. Part of the issue may be that exploration geologists are not necessarily experienced geotechnical engineers and do not necessarily recognise or understand all important parameters. Subject to appropriate application of experienced professionals data can be manipulated to provide key geotechnical hazard assessment at minimal cost, and provide a framework for understanding and optimising the mine planning process. Although there is no single prescribed strategy for resource evaluation from a geotechnical perspective, potential business risks and mitigation approaches can and should be adopted at the conceptual mine planning stage. There has been a recent focus in the metals industry to provide a reporting framework for geotechnical classification of mining projects. This paper outlines the strategies and gives examples of key analyses adopted in mine planning and discusses the relative merits of adopting a reporting framework as a tool for geotechnical classification in mine planning.

The expansion of New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) concentrator necessitated the installation of hydrocyclone classifiers where rake classifiers had previously been used. Commissioning of the circuit and optimisation of circuit performance has highlighted problems related to classification of sulphide minerals. Testwork initiated to solve these problems has been used to develop cyclone models which have been incorporated in a ccnputer control strategy for the grinding circuit as a whole. The modifications to the circuit during the commissioning phase and the control philosophy are outlined.

The Miitel nickel sulfide deposit has been overprinted by a family of late stage structures that have acted as conduits for fluids that have contaminated the orebody with arsenic minerals. This has resulted in highly variable and unpredictable arsenic grades throughout the Miitel orebody. The ore produced from Miitel is processed under a toll-treatment agreement with Western Mining Resources Kambalda Nickel Concentrator. Part of this arrangement includes a financial penalty if monthly average arsenic grades in ore delivered exceed 800 ppm. This constraint has provided an extra challenge to the Miitel mine geologist in addition to daily underground duties. Routine development and stope mapping, close spaced sampling and cross-sectional interpretation were used in building an understanding of the structural controls of arsenic mineralisation and ore repetition at the Miitel nickel mine, and in providing maximum input to mine planning and scheduling. The distribution of structures responsible for arsenic introduction is now well understood from detailed mapping, sampling, and interpretation. By applying these insights to mine scheduling, the operation has successfully managed arsenic levels within the required specifications. Geological mapping has also improved the understanding of the structural complexity of the ore deposit, leading to the addition of ore tonnes and an increased confidence in resource modelling. Regular sampling and tight controls on data quality provided confidence in a strongly skewed arsenic data set. Multiple Indicator Kriging has been used for resource estimation of the arsenic contaminated nickel ore since it allows explicit control of the spatial influence of extreme grades in the positively skewed arsenic sample population. Both the grade control and exploration data sets are used to model the arsenic distribution.

Large diameter raise boring is a common raise excavation method in the Australian mining industry. Geotechnical investigations were conducted on several large diameter raise bore projects at Gwalia Mine to assess the potential for instability and potential back-reaming problems. A thorough geotechnical analysis and subsequent back-analysis was conducted on a vent raise excavated at 5.5 m diameter and 810 m length.The geotechnical investigation for the vent raise included collection of data from an acoustic televiewer survey that was conducted on the pilot hole. The survey results provided structural data and an insight into the effects of stress on the pilot hole. Structural analysis was conducted using a combination of information obtained from the acoustic televiewer survey and geotechnical logs of the diamond drill core drilled close to the site.Further information was collected from drillers’ plods from pilot hole drilling and back-reaming to conduct a back-analysis of the completed shaft, and this was compared with the structural analysis.The key finding from this review was that the acoustic televiewer survey of the pilot hole accurately identified locations with blocky conditions. This is an important supplement to the information available from the main geotechnical investigation hole, as this was offset from the shaft location over most of its path.CITATION:Stephenson, R M and Sandy, M P, 2014. As world demand for various minerals increases the mining industry in its endeavour to satisfy this demand will, eventually,look to the extraction of orebodies which previously may have been uneconomical to mine. These orebodies may be of two types. Firstly, new low grade orebodies and secondly, remnant sections of previously mined orebodies. Some of the factors relative to remnant mining operations are discussed and the potent- ial of remnant mining in providing an important contribution to future world metal production is considered.

This paper outlines a range of strategies for steady state optimisation of most types of concentrators. Optimisation is considered in terms of comminution performance, energy efficiency, concentrator strategy and overall mine/concentrator operating philosophies. Application becomes more complex as the range of optimisation is expanded. However, the potential gains also increase. A step by step framework for data collection and analysis is provided. This process is facilitated by powerful simulation and mass balancing programs which are now in common use. Once a sound, steady state rationale for optimisation has been developed, it may be used to provide a fine foundation for process control system development.

Changes in the stress field around faults due to the excavation of underground space or the extraction of underground resources induce fault reactivation. To understand the mechanism of fault reactivation, it is important to observe the deformation and sliding processes of the asperities, which is regionally contacted areas at the fault planes. In the laboratory, triaxial compression tests are commonly conducted to reproduce the stress conditions around faults and study their mechanical behaviours. The conventional measurement devices for triaxial compression testing (eg load cells, local deformation transducers, and piezoelectric sensors) uses sensors to measure changes in the physical properties of rocks, but the direct visual information for the sample condition inside the pressure vessel is limited and can only be estimated from the sample after the experiment. We recently developed a direct visual measurement system to observe the slip behaviour of rocks from the inside of the pressure vessel of a triaxial test apparatus. This paper introduces this visual measurement system and presents some preliminary experimental results. The visual measurement system consists of a steel housing with a built-in commercially available digital camera. The triaxial compression tests were conducted to visually observe the sliding behaviour of the pre-cut specimens and to measure its behaviour through the digital image correlation (DIC) method. The captured images and the DIC results show the displacement field of the specimens for different confining pressure. We verified the sliding behaviour and the failure at/around the triangular asperity under at different confining pressure.

IT is most remarkable and valuable property of mediurn and high carbon steels that they should be so susceptible to heat treatment, the wide range of variability in tenacity, ductility, etc, due to the normal influence of the carbon in the untreated material being enormously inereased thereby.The physical properties of steel and other metals are much more closely related to their structure than to their ultimate analysis.For instance, we may by chemical analysis determine the carbon content of a steel to be 0.5% ; but this information alone is insufficient to enable us to say what are the physical properties of the metal.Such a steel may possess 11 tensile strength of anything from 35 tons per sq. in., with much ductility, up to 80 tons per sq. in., with practically no ductility, according to its heat treatment. A microscopie examination, on the other hand, would show the structural composition of the steel, from which its physical properties could be approximately deduced. Legislative requirements now demand employers navigate this complex terrain, but uncertainty often clouds effective management. The resource industry’s skills in managing physical hazards are showcased in their adaptability in this case study. Integrating the Critical Risk Management framework with organisational psychology, a mining company achieved a transformative breakthrough. They identified and assessed psychosocial hazards and established a sustained and risk based approach to managing these hazards within the workplace. The use of gravity concentration is, and has always been, the conventional primary method for gold recovery from alluvial deposits. The development of high capacity cone concentrators and metallurgically efficient wash-waterless spiral separators has had some impact in the technology for alluvial gold processing, but perhaps more significantly has led to the relatively recent use of this gravity concentration technology in grinding circuits of hard rock ore for "coarse" gold removal and for scavenging gold locked in sulphides from cyanidation tailings streams.Gravity concentration systems are relatively low-cost, non-polluting and energy efficient; and their judicial use in gold treatment plants can significantly reduce overall capital and operating costs.The application of modern gravity concentration technology to hard-rock and alluvial gold ore treatment is discussed. Flowsheets and test and operating data from a number of gold processing operations incorporating gravity concentration treatment are presented.

This paper discusses the considerations for optimum maintenance of critical ore handling infrastructure in order to minimise the cost to the business of maintenance periods. As maintenance periods are a direct interruption to production, time is of the essence and careful management of shutdown periods is essential. The ore pass systems currently in use at Xstrata Copper û Mount Isa Copper Operations are up to 30 years old and have had significant wear over the years. The maintenance of these passes and their brows and chutes in a production situation is a challenge as it can potentially expose personnel to high risk situations in addition to the production interruptions. Some alternatives for mitigating the risk of working in ore passes including plugging and ballooning are described. Criteria are included for selecting a method for the safe entry into a given ore pass. Experience in adapting the method of ore pass plugs and some lessons learnt in the process are also discussed.

The purpose of this research was to study the calcination of lead-zinc flotation tailings from the Angouran lead and zinc flotation plant in Iran as a pre-concentration step prior to hydrometallurgical processing of the oxidised tailings. There is an abundance of these tailings in the Angouran region and making use of these tailings would help preserve national wealth and also reduce the serious problems of environmental pollution caused by the tailings. At the optimal conditions of calcining at 750 - 800¦C for 45 minutes, the sample showed a mass loss of about 19 per cent. Mineralogical analyses showed that under these conditions the carbonate minerals including smithsonite (ZnCO3), calcite (CaCO3) and dolomite (Ca Mg (CO3)2) decomposed to their respective oxides. Hemimorphite (Zn4Si2O7 (OH)2.H2O) converted into willemite (Zn2SiO4) and this transformation postponed the formation of silica gel in the leach solution. The grade of zinc increased from 22.20 per cent to 29 per cent. These mineralogical changes resulted in desirable reactions in the acid leach process.

That is the primary objective and the justification of the geologist in the minerals industry. There is no other function that we can rationalize." This is, however, a restricted point of view, and one which I an sure is not fully shared by mining executives or mine operators at the present time. Ore reserves are 'made' as well as 'found' and the geologist contributes to this process. A mining geologist engages in activity in- volving the study of geology in connection with the total mining operation. His major task is the adaption of geological knowledge of ore de- posits and rock behaviour to mining needs, and the application of principles of the science of geology to specific problems of finding, develop- ing and extracting of ore bodies.

The Permian-Triassic Bowen Basin and the Jurassic-Cretaceous Surat Basin evolved in a backarc tectonic setting behind an active convergent plate margin in eastern Gondwana. Several extensional (Early Permian; Eocene) and contractional (mid- Permian; Early Triassic; Middle-Late Triassic; early Late Cretaceous) intraplate deformational events are recognised in the basins. These can be correlated with similar events in the New England Orogen that was being deformed in the Late Permian- Late Triassic as a foreland thrust belt. The intraplate deformations were probably the consequence of plate interactions, including the accretion of terranes, at the ancient active plate margin, remnants of which now occur in New Zealand.

Carboxymethyl cellulose, CMC, is widely used in mineral processing as a flotation depressant, mainly for the depression of carbonate and talcaceous gangue in the flotation of Cu-Ni sulfide and PGM ores. Although CMC is a common depressant that can be used in the flotation of different ores, understanding of the interaction mechanisms between CMC and mineral particles in different flotation circuits and different pulp conditions is still limited. Electrokinetic measurements, microflotation and laboratory-scale flotation tests were carried out to optimise the action of CMC depressants in the flotation of a PGM ore. Standard and new CMC brands produced and characterised by Noviant were used in the study. Pure talc and chlorite minerals and a low-grade PGM ore composite were used as test materials. A laboratory flotation test evaluation was performed using the recovery-grade relationship and double value index (DVI) calculation to estimate the effects of both valuable and harmful components on the product value. Solution conditions play an important role in the depression of gangue minerals such as talc. The most favourable conditions for MgO depression were found to be mildly acidic in which conditions the electrostatic repulsion between the CMC molecule and talc is minimised. Similar effects were obtained with electrolytes that affect the conformation of the CMC molecule and the mineral surfaces. In addition to the control of chemical conditions in the pulp, CMC molecules were modified to optimise structural variables. The new CMC brands developed in this work showed significant potential to improve flotation performance, particularly when pulp conditions are controlled.

In order to understand the effect of oxygen injection into the molten metal on the valuable metals (VM) recovery and interfacial phenomena, several high-temperature experiments were conducted using a high-frequency induction furnace with a quartz tube as the reaction chamber at 1673 K. Copper-based waste printed circuit board (PCB) that contains some impurities was selected as the end-of-life resource. CaO-SiO2 based pre-fused slag and oxygen gas were used in present works. The composition change and microstructure of the samples were analysed. As oxygen was injected into the system, impurities were rapidly removed. After the removal of impurities, continuously injected oxygen lowered interfacial tension between liquid slag and liquid metal. Lowered interfacial tension induced Cu loss into the slag.

An empirical kinetic model is discussed that enables the number of stages in a carbon-in-pulp plant and the amount of carbon in each stage to be calculated for any desired metallurgical performance. It is shown that a knowledge of the kinetics of gold extraction by activated carbon in each stage assists plant operators in the important' areas of process control and optimization. Factors such as mixing efficiency, concentration and distribution of carbon through the plant, bypassing of pulp through a stage, and carbon poisoning are examined. The resin-in-pulp process for the extraction of gold cyanide is also discussed, and the chemistry of absorption and elution on strong- and weak-base resins is examined. In addition, operating results from a small-scale resin-in-pulp pilot plant are presented, and various applications in which resin-in-pulp may be preferable to carbon-in-pulp are discussed.

The Tooloom gold field is located within the New England Fold Belt in the far northeast of New South Wales, approximately 130 km south southwest of Brisbane. Gold was first discovered at Tooloom in 1857. Within a few years up to 10 000 people were mining placer gold deposits in the Tooloom valley and a few tried their hand at mining hard rock occurrences as well. Mining of alluvial gold continued in a small way at Tooloom until very recently, but only in the last few years, since Malachite Resources acquired its interest at Tooloom (now 100 per cent), has the full potential of this large, reduced intrusion-related gold field been appreciated. By the mid 1870s, once the alluvials were largely worked out, most of the early miners had made the 270 km trek north to the newly discovered Gympie gold field and Tooloom slipped into obscurity. Such was this obscurity that the Tooloom gold field was not recorded on published Government geological maps until 2001, four years after Malachite became involved. The many hard rock prospects that Malachite has identified in recent years were largely or completely unknown. Tooloom is a good example of blinkered thinking when it comes to modern mineral exploration. The New England province in NSW has long been the æpoor relationÆ to the much better known and more highly favoured Lachlan Fold Belt in NSW. It has also suffered serious neglect compared with the Queensland part of the New England Fold Belt that hosts such major gold deposits as Mt Morgan (>7 Moz), Gympie (>3 Moz) and Cracow (>1 Moz). Tooloom is proof that prospective geology does not stop at state borders.
