Based on the stiffness theory, the stiffness difference and energy supply of surrounding rocks are important inducing factors for strain burst. However, due to the lack of multi-level low stiffness testing machine, there are few experimental studies on rock failure mechanisms under the influence of loading stiffness. This paper introduced a self-developed rock testing system with changeable stiffness. The main testing machine of this system is a combined structure of inner and outer frame. The change in the loading stiffness is achieved by using a stiffness servo control system to control the energy accumulation in the inner frame. The tests of the sandstone specimens under three different loading stiffnesses in the testing system showed that the loading stiffness did not significantly affect either the uniaxial compressive strength or the Young’s modulus of the rock. However, the post-peak stress-strain curve of the rock became smoother and steeper when the loading stiffness was decreased, and the stress drop rate increased. It is shown that the stress drop rate had a power function correlation with the loading stiffness. After the peak load, the inner frame of the testing system rebounded several times at high speeds. The magnitude of the instantaneous rebound speed and the rebound duration increased with the decrease of loading stiffness. Both the mean rebound velocity and the total rebound deformation had power function correlations with the loading stiffness. The loading stiffness has limited effect on the energy storage and energy dissipation characteristics of the specimen, while the released energy of the testing machine increases as the loading stiffness decreases, which is the key factor affecting the failure mode of the specimen. According to the test results, a rock burst mechanical model considering the stiffness is established, and the energy supply mechanism of rock burst is quantitatively explained.

The Golden Cross is the first large precious metals mine to be both commissioned and closed in the æmodernÆ era in New Zealand. This paper discusses the life cycle of the Golden Cross mine, with emphasis on the closure process and post closure management.   The closure process has generally been very well managed, and successful, but in spite of that some on-going issues remain unresolved. Nearly nine years after the end of mining the mine owners are still actively managing the site, with no immediate end to that in sight.   The site has been described as atypical, due to the identification of a deep seated landslide below the tailings and waste rock storage facilities. However that should not be given too much emphasis when addressing the overall closure and post-closure management issues, which could well apply to other existing and future mine sites in New Zealand.   The Golden Cross can provide valuable lessons for other miners, and the issues arising at this site should be watched closely by the industry as a whole.

The future challenges in mining instrumentation, mainly on future intelligent mines, are to continue providing instruments with the highest level of reliability at the lowest possible cost, and also to take advantage of technology existing in other industries and to adapt it to the mining context. New wireless instruments (smart sensors, smart actuators, smart controllers) would also be very useful, as well as instruments fully adapted to the monitoring of large movements that are observed, in both underground and open pit mines. Mining instrumentation is found to various degrees in most mines, both open pit and underground. Smart mining instruments present a certain number of aspects specific to the environment in which the instruments are installed. Namely, the instruments can be installed either for short-term or long-term purposes. The mining industry is always looking for useful instruments that can provide relevant information on ground behaviour adjacent to mining stopes or permanent infrastructure. The instruments must meet the various criteria, and must also evolve with the new mining technologies that are continuously being implemented. A strong collaboration between the mining industry, research organisations, and instrument manufacturers is the key to meeting these objectives. This contribution describes the current trends on smart sensors and smart instrumentation with Wireless LAN support.

The End of the Line for Roadway Development By Michael Kelly, CSIRO Exploration & Mining Michael Kelly highlighted that roadway development performance remains one of the threats to expansion of Australia underground coal exports to the growing Asian market. In a recent industry study, automation was highlighted as one of seven strategies for roadway development improvement. Growing Asian markets The expansion of the Asian coal market is a long term driver for expansion of the underground coal industry in Australia - if significant productivity improvements are made. Imports of steaming coal by Asian APEC members are predicted to rise by from 150 MT to 190 MT. Australia is one of the few countries which has a potential capacity larger than predicted internal needs. Predictions are for exports of black steaming coal from Australia to increase from 50.3 MT in 1992 to 106.3 MT in 2010. To meet this prediction, an investment of $10.7 billion (in 1992 dollars) will have to be made in mining and transport facilities. This is equivalent to the opening of a major new mine each year until 2010. Many of these mines will be underground operations. However, much of Australia's capacity to respond to increased Asian demand will depend on its ability to develop underground technologies and improve productivity. The inability to make sustained improvements in roadway development rates has to date been one of the main reasons why new underground projects have failed to deliver the expected returns.

The Greens are asking the question: what do our mining towns look like in 2050 and how can we be better prepared? The resources boom brought enormous profits to the main players and was partly responsible for insulating Australia through the worst of last year's global economic turmoil. However, with indicators of a resurgent mining boom, it is essential we learn from the recent past. The last boom saw housing stress at levels unseen in the big cities, health services strained to breaking point, and Aboriginal poverty side by side with some of the most lucrative industrial precincts in the country. Much of the wealth still flies right over the heads of regional communities as fly-in, fly-out operations proliferate.   Behind these local stresses, resources booms rely on the stripping of non-renewable resources which will eventually run out, and the unique environment of the north-west is taking a battering.    Communities of the north-west have a perilously narrow economic base which must be broadened if townships of the Pilbara and Goldfields are to avoid the fate of places such as Goldsworthy and Wittenoom. Unless this is informed by local communities, decisions will be made in capital cities thousands of kilometres away by people largely ignorant of the unique conditions prevailing in regional Western Australia.   Global climate change negotiations and oil depletion will heavily penalise emissions-intensive economies like Australia which fail to keep up as the world moves to a low-carbon environment. Iron ore fines are used as raw materials for sintered ore for blast furnaces in the world. Since the production and quality of sintered ore have a great influence on the stable operation of a blast furnace, many technologies were developed for controlling the heat profile in the sintering machine, which largely affect the sintered ore properties. In particular, the influence of oxygen in the suction gas, which plays an important role in combustion, was investigated over the years. It is known that increasing the oxygen ratio by about 30 per cent not only significantly improves the combustion rate, but it also increases the strength and yield of sintered ore. However, the details of the mechanism for improving these qualities are unknown. In this study, we investigated the influence of oxygen enrichment at higher ratios (O2: 21–40 per cent) and tried to understand the sintering behaviour enhanced by oxygen. The effect of oxygen enrichment on sintered ore quality and the heat profile were evaluated by sintering tests using a quartz glass pot. From the results, sintered ore yield had a maximum value for O2 = 30 per cent, but strength was increased for O2 = 40 per cent. From heat pattern analysis, it is clear that the high temperature holding time also reached a maximum at O2 = 30 per cent. Furthermore, we found that with increased oxygen ratio, the combustion speed (flame front speed) was increased, but the area of combustion was enlarged. It is considered that there could be a maximum oxygen ratio value for the yield from the balance of these positive and negative effects on high temperature holding time. To clarify the reason for strength improvement, thermodynamic calculations were performed and it was found that melting behaviour could be improved by changing the oxygen ratio.

Introduction The mine winder is an essential element in the mining of ore in deep level mines and therefore requires a high degree of reliability to avoid interruption of production. Failure of any component on a winder may also be dangerous and expensive to repair. The larger the failure the larger the stoppage. The failure of a winder drum is the ultimate catastrophe, not only because of the cost of replacement, but also because of the lead time in procuring a new drum. Today these types of failure are not as common but many failures have occurred in the past and even today many an old winder is con- sidered for a new and often more arduous duty. As far back as the turn of the century a lot of information had been gathered to try and clear up the complexities of the multi- layering effect of coiling rope under tension onto a drum. Before comparing results obtained by various researchers the nature of the pressure distribution between rope and drum due to multi-layering will be discussed briefly.

Risk and uncertainty are attached to mining projects, and making decisions, hedging, future investment and evaluation of mining projects depend on forecasting the future price. The future technologic developments in mining will be primarily influenced by the future commodity prices. A few approaches, with different confidences are proposed to predict price movement in the future. This research introduces a new comprehensive version of the mean reverting jump diffusion model for natural-resource commodity prices. The novel model proposes that the historical data of mineral commodities have three terms to demonstrate fluctuation of prices: mean reversion component, diffusion component and jump component. The model calculates each term individually to compute the future prices of mineral commodities. Subsequently, in the second section of the paper, the model is implemented for monthly historical data of gold price from January 1968 to May 2008. This research is investigating the relationship between the historical oil price and inflation with the gold price. This is followed by a future estimation of gold price fluctuations up to 2018. The results from the application of this new method are discussed in the context of how they accurately replicate the historical gold price and how they can predict the future gold price.

New Zealand Steel Limited is nearing completion of the environmental reporting and planning procedures for its proposed fivefold expansion to steelmaking at Glenbrook, and supporting mining operations at Waikato North Head. A report on the proposal to transport concentrate from the mining operations to Glenbrook has also been prepared and is awaiting release. This paper draws from these events, and by discussing some of the problems encountered, gives some guidelines for the preparation of an Environmental Impact Report.

This paper is concerned with the tracking of particles in the froth phase of an aerated water/glycerol mixture. Experiments have been carried out in a specially designed laboratory flotation cell that allows formation of a deep froth. Phosphorescent tracer particles of various sizes were injected into the centre of a froth column where they were excited by ultraviolet lights, positioned at the back and front of the column. The motion of particles was captured on a digital camera with a green filter. The images from the digital camera were then transferred to a computer and an image analysis program was used to convert the colour intensity to the concentration of particles at each location within the froth. The tracer technique was used to determine the dispersion of hydrophilic particles and the variation of the concentration of solids with axial and radial positions.

The Australian Mineral Industries Research Association, set up by the mineral industry in 1959, acts as a research and development broker and manager for the industry. In 1984/85 it contracted out just over $3 million of projects. Its structure and method of operation is described and highlights of some of the successful projects are given. The complex process of developing new proposals is described. This involves the establishment of effective communication networks within the industry and between the industry and research personnel working outside it. The advantages of the industry tackling some of its problems on a jointly sponsored basis are listed. Possible avenues for future development by the Association are given.

DURING a period extending over about the last two and a half years, the performances of various types of rock drills in use at the mining department of the Zinc Corporation have been recorded as closely as possible. The main objective was the collection of sufficient data regarding internal water-feed hammer drills, when used for the same class of work as the older type reciprocating drill, to enable a decision to be formed on the following points:(1) Whether internal water-feed, hammer drills could efficiently perform the work previously carried out by reciprocating drills without excessive repair cost to the former.(2) If so, was it good policy commercially to eliminate the reciprocating type completely, writing these off together with the accompanying spares, accessories, and solid drill steel, and replacing with internal water-feed hammer drills, with lighter fittings, and the requisite amount of hollow drill steel.(3) What were the best types and makes of hammer drill for different classes of mining work(4) What was the economic aspect of the introduction of the principle of internal water feed to every type of machine throughout the mine.Prior to the strike of workers in May, 1919, Ingersoll-Rand E47 31-in. reciprocating drills had been used for stoping and for the major portion of driving, cross-cutting, and similar work. The accompanying columns and fittings were all 4t in. The drill steel used was solid octagon. Up to 1916 these machines were also used for winzing, after which time jackhamers were more successfully employed. These latter were of the usual types, varying in weight from 40 to' 46 Ib. Ingersoll BCR 430, Holman No. 2 spool valve, Sullivan DP33,. Waugh Clipper 55. These machines were all dry head; the drill steel was hollow hexagon, shanked.

The energy consumption for producing metal from ore is strongly linked to the chemical stability of mineral being processed, availability and richness of the ore, and process route. Energy efficiencies are particularly linked to the process route. The energy efficiency of high temperature operations vary considerably but energy efficiencies greater than 70 per cent are achieved for large-scale metal production. Low temperature processing through grinding, leaching and subsequent electrowinning use large amounts of energy. In particular, grinding and electrowinning suffer from low overall energy efficiencies. The physical chemistry of a new proposed low temperature route, reactive ball milling, is unclear but preliminary evaluations indicate that it is likely to suffer from high energy consumption. In conclusion, low temperature processing routes for metals generally consume more energy that comparable high temperature processing routes.

There are- several in-seam coal research projects currently under investigation by the Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE). The overall aim of the projects is to produce new technologies to enhance safety and the efficiency of in-seam gas drainage drilling. Results from high pressure waterjet rotary drilling trials indicate that by applying high pressure water to a rotary drill bit, the hole can be drilled to follow the planned trajectory very closely. Steerable drill bits for drilling long holes (>1 km) have been produced and trialed. A flexible high speed drilling system provides a capacity for rapid in-seam drilling, particularly suited to cross panel drainage. Geophysical tools are being developed to provide a geological steering capability and a better understanding of potential gas outbursts zones.

The lignite mines in the Latrobe Valley of Victoria/Australia have been using continuously operating mining systems for more than 50 years. The relatively small bucket chain dredgers of the early years have been progressively displaced by bucket wheel dredgers with increasing size, increasing capacity and increasing service weight. The large machines for the new open pit Loy Yang have a bucket wheel outreach of 46m, an effective capacity of 3350 bm' coal/h respective 2500 bm' overburden/h and a serv- ice weight of approx. 4500 t. The time between signing of con- tract and starting of operation for these machines is at least four years. The high service weight, the resulting high capital invest- ment and the long period for design, design review, manufac- turing, erection and commissioning of these machines directed the SECV to investigate a possible application of compact dredgers for the Latrobe Valley.

Coal mining safety and health legislation is more than typical of safety legislation which has been born of adversity. Indeed, in the main it has been the child of disaster. Requirements which now appear obvious were indeed only occasioned by either social injustice or more commonly by great disasters. Even then changes were often made only after months or years of deliberation by committees. Early mining legislation in New South Wales benefited from the experience in Great Britain. The pioneers of our industry were miners from there and brought with them the basic British legislation, so we started with knowledge gained the hard way. A review of accidents statistics provides a measure of the effectiveness of mine safety legislation, but unfortunately rules cannot control human nature. Miners, managers and inspectors must work as a team to make mines safe and new legislation in New South Wales is planned to this end.

On the 1 June 1978, the Town and Country Planning Act 1953 was replaced by the revised and more comprehensive Town and Country Planning Act 1977. The new act brings in some substantial changes to the law affecting regional and district planning, and for the first time makes provision for maritime planning. The importance of the Town and Country Planning Act 1977 to the Mineral industry is primarily in the relationship between Regional Planning Schemes and District Schemes as the needs and resources identified in a Regional Planning Scheme will override the underlying District Schemes. The mineral extraction industry must be recognised as a regional responsibility which draws on the resources of a region to satisfy the demand of the communities within that region rather than a purely local operation within one District.

Atlas Iron Limited’s (Atlas) Abydos Mine has developed its Scarborough open pit proximal to a rock shelter that has been assessed as a significant Aboriginal heritage site by the Traditional Owners of the land. The rock shelter, named Yurlu Kankala, is located to the north-west of the pit with a stand-off distance of 35 m. Within Atlas’ Native Title Agreement with the Traditional Owners, and approvals from the Western Australian Department of Aboriginal Affairs, commitments have been made to conduct mining in a way that avoids or at least minimises disturbance and damage to the rock shelter. This complies with the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 (WA) and respects the heritage and culture of the Traditional Owners.CITATION:Bow, B G and Jiang, J J, 2018. Increasing contamination/impurity levels (including arsenic, antimony, mercury etc.) of concentrates is an issue of global commercial and health / environmental significance. With increasing environmental pressures at smelters, penalties for contaminants in concentrates continue to rise, accompanied by lower reject limits. There is a strong incentive for miners to investigate alternative means to remove contaminants in order to increase the value of complex ores and concentrates. This paper discusses the global problem of contamination in complex ores and concentrates, how the Toowong Process technology is a potential solution to this problem, and the opportunities this technology brings to the business of dealing with deleterious elements. The mining industry has undergone a profound and transformative shift in recent years, driven by the rapid advancement of emerging technologies such as automation, digitalisation, and electrification. These technological innovations have not only revolutionised operational efficiency and productivity but have also introduced an imperative need for new and innovative approaches to conducting mining activities. Specifically, the mines of the future face a new series of complex challenges when planning and developing greenfield or brownfield mining projects in the 21st century. These challenges include greater operational depths, higher seismicity levels, higher rock temperatures, increased environmental constraints and sustainability requirements, a higher degree of interoperability, lack of skilled workforce, and the need for sustainable and eco-friendly mining practices. Consequently, there is an essential need to formulate novel strategies and robust planning methodologies that re-evaluate how mines are planned, executed, and managed, from the early exploration stages to the post-mining era and the consequent uses of mine sites. This research focuses on identifying the factors influencing the implementation of modern technologies, such as autonomous machinery in mining operations, and their impact on mining method selection and longterm mine planning. The findings underscore a crucial need for a paradigm shift in how mines are planned and developed, going beyond mining method selection, which primarily focuses on geological and economic factors, and must evolve to incorporate the multifaceted implications of modern mining operations.
