Nuclear power stations to be installed in Australia will be fuelled from Australian resources of raw materials. This will require the establishment of new manufacturing industries and the eventual expansion of established activities, especially in uranium mining and the preparation of precision metal products. This paper presents some predictions of the possible growth of nuclear power installations in Australia. These might amount to 4000 MWE by 1985 and 11,500 MWE by 1990 and towards the end of the century, about 50% of new generating plant might be nuclear. Predictions are given of the demands for materials (uranium and zirconium) and fuel manufacturing services for four reactor systems which might be considered in the programme. - The availability of raw materials and technical capability place Australia in a particularly good position to undertake the manufacture of nuclear fuel'; in addition to satisfying the domestic demand we should actively seek export markets for these products.

After a brief introduction on the principles of contact electrification and a synthetic illustration of the Turbocharger separator, the successful results obtained with different raw materials are given and discussed, with particular reference to a North African run-of-mine with carbonate gangue, a crude ore from India containing pyrite and a mineral sample from Angola having quartzeous gangue. The pre-eminent effect of target surface temperature in the charging device of the separator is emphasised. On the basis of the results of both batch experiments and long-run tests the prospects of industrial application appear very interesting both from the technical and economic points of view, even when compared with froth flotation.

With recovery being important in optimising the business performance of a laterite and sulfide plant and with water being a precious resource in Australia, there has been increased pressure for companies to improve their methods of improving liquor recovery and improving water recovery in both laterite and sulfide plants. This has resulted in new control technologies such as the Manta Cube being applied on countercurrent decantation (CCD) and thickening circuits which is necessary to improve stability and optimise the liquor and water recovery in these processing plants. This paper describes the benefit of applying these new control techniques on CCD and thickening circuits in some of the mineral processing plants in Australia.

P S B Stewart has rightly pointed to a possible obscurity in our paper on drilling patterns, viz. in comparing the improvement of a triangular drilling pattern over a square one, we used percentage improvements without always making clear their base. We hope, however, that other readers, like Stewart, have been able to understand the particular meaning from the context.Although different methods of estimation of an ore deposit will have different local bias (Philip and Watson, 1985), the critical relationship affecting the reliability of estimation of an unsampled location is the scale of local variation of the variable being estimated in comparison with the density and isotropy of sampling. This relationship overrides all other considerations.

Amongst the Pacific Rim countries, Papua New Guinea (PNG) is the leader in new gold discoveries and developments leading to new production. PNG has shown a dramatic increase in gold production when taken from a base of about 600 000 ounces in 1984 to 1 160 000 ounces in 1986. 1987 is expected to produce about 1 500 000 ounces and new planned developments will give further large increases. PNG's leading position when compared with neighboring Pacific Rim countries is only partly due to its favorable geological setting along the "Rim of Fire" epithermal zone. More important have been well-thought-out mining development legislation and good administration as well as consistent taxation and royalty policies. A stable political environment and a track record of new mining developments over the last 15 years, both pre and post Independence in 1975, have also been important factors in encouraging the new developments. Early Portuguese explorers associated the New Guinea mainland with gold as early as 1525 but it was not un,11 1R77 that a small ill-fated gold rush gave the first recorded production at Laloki near Port Moresby. Modest but commercial discoveries were made in the outer islands and coastal mainland regions from 1888 to 1926. In 1922 William "Sharkeye" Park found gold at Edie Creek and this led to major discoveries at Wau and Bulolo which were the first large scale commercial gold Operations.

Traditionally, the term ætotal systemÆ design applied to comminution conjures images of a design that addresses the usual business and operational drivers, including health, safety and environment (HSE), capital cost, operating cost, throughput and product size. In terms of the physical process, the mine to customer type studies also exemplifies an approach that satisfies a normal ætotal systemsÆ approach. As an industry there are drivers that are forcing a re-consideration of what we regard as our total system. This modification of drivers will require changes in approach and implementation to provide the best solutions. Some of the major changes that impact the drivers are shortage of skilled personnel, changing social attitudes to remote mine site work, greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE), quality of available orebodies and geographical location of new mine sites. One approach to the challenges presented by the changing business environment is to expand the system envelope around comminution to ensure that comminution, in its widest sense, helps to meet the new realities. Background to the new drivers and constraints is provided and some of the appropriate responses are examined in relation to the impact on the total system.

Coal exploration and mine planning now use all the modem techniques to indicate geological hazards to a new or developing coal mine. Drilling, seismic and other sophisticated geophysical methods aim to increase the reliability of prediction of features which will inhibit mine development. But do they?. During the past 40 years, geological investigations for coal mines in New South Wales have ranged from the general observations of Eric Rudd, in the Southern Coalfield in the late 1940s to the very detailed examinations of roof strata by John Shepherd and others in the 1980s. Then, the large scale regional relationships between sedimentary and structural features often were ignored as the minute examination of seam roof strata became fashionable.

The paper describes the application of New Zealand's environmental impact assessment procedures to a proposed gold and silver mine in the North Island of New Zealand. The project is described and a summary is provided of the statutory permits or consents that are required prior to operation of the project. Emphasis is given to the requirement for environmental impact assessment and the preparation of a formal environmental impact report. The company's approach to impact assessment is described, with examples of how this assessment and the identification of management alternatives influenced the engineering design of the project. This paper was prepared as a contribution to a working session of the International Association of Impact Assessment VII Annual Conference, July 1988.

The key concepts relating to the calculation of recoverable reserves for selective mining in open pit gold operations are discussed. While the general concepts are relevant to a wide range of gold ore bodies, their application is specific to particular ore bodies.The important factors contributing to the recoverable reserves aregeology, mining method, dilution, ore loss, sampling methods and theultimate bench height used in production.The implications of current methods of computing recoverable reservesare reviewed and some alternative approaches to recoverable reservecomputation based on production experience are presented.

Coal mining has been occurring on the Stockton Plateau for over 100 years. As a result of both natural conditions and mining activities, surface water on the plateau is known to have low pH and elevated metals concentrations, a condition known as acid rock drainage (ARD). Solid Energy New Zealand Ltd (SENZ), as owners of the current mining operations at Stockton desire to understand the nature and causes of ARD at Stockton to determine whether commercially viable options can be developed to improve the water quality to levels acceptable to the local community and regulators. A series of integrated water quality investigations have been performed towards developing a characterisation of the water quality on the Stockton Plateau and receiving waters. The investigations performed include: design and implementation of a water quality monitoring program to collect a satisfactory base of water quality data from which to develop an understanding of the water quality and its variability, and to collect data regarding the range of flow rates that occur in the principal streams; development of a hydrological model for the Plateau with the ability to predict flow rates at key locations on the plateau and on the Ngakawau River; field investigations of the bio-diversity of the plateau and surrounding areas, to develop a snapshot of the health of aquatic communities and whether streams draining mine workings are æadversely impactedÆ; eco-toxicology; waste dump seepage water quality monitoring at selected basal springs, drilling, investigations and permeability and geochemical testing; data processing of a range of historical data and the newly acquired data for the development of empirical relationships that describe the water chemistry system and its relationship in turn to flow rates in the streams; simulation of the long term water quality record for the measured parameters (pH, acidity and metals concentrations), based on the hydrological model and the empirical relationships developed from the new database; and preliminary development and examination of mitigation options for the ARD issues at the mine. The study has progressed towards design of pilot studies of options for mitigation of the generation of the ARD as well as treatment of the discharges. It is the integrated approach adopted by SENZ from an early time in the investigations, that has enabled fast-tracking of the pilot engineering trials. This paper presents the results of the field investigations and eco-toxicology studies and demonstrates the value of predictive modelling of water quality in the study area, even at a very early stage in the remedial engineering design process.

It is proposed to deal with those raw materials which are produced in South Australia to meet the needs of the country's steel industry. They are chiefly, iron ore, limestone and quartz.Iron ore and limestone are fed to the blast furnaces of Newcastle and Port Kembla together with coke to produce the hot metal charge for the open hearth steel furnaces.They are also qsed in the raw state in the steel furnaces to assist in the conversion of the hot metal to steel. The iron ore is quarried from' Iron Knob and shipped from Whyalla to Newcastle and Port Kembla, whilst the limestone is supplied from the deposits at Rapid Bay and shipped in the same manner.Quartz is used in the manufacture of ferro-silicon, an alloy which is added to the ladles of molten metal tapped from the open hearth furnace in the case of almost every grade of steel. It is obtained from a quarry situated between Iron Knob and Whyalla, and shipped to Newcastle.IRON OREWith the exception of several small quarries situated at Breadalbane, Cadia, Cowra, Crookwell, Michelago, Jerrawa and lerraama in New South Wales, the iron ore requirements of Australia's steel industry to date have been met from Iron Knob and the Middleback Range in South Australia.Several of the small deposits in New South Wales were worked during the war years of 1941-44 during the shipping emergency and produced 1,355,417 tons, compared with an output of approximately 43,000,000 tons from Iron Knob between 1901 and 1949.

In order to deal with this, the education system should be geared to this continual technological advance.A new scheme is designed to attract high quality school leaven to take up courses serving the mineral industry. Renison Goldfields Consolidated Limited (RGC) and Consolidated Gold Fields Plc (CGF) purchased New Guinea Goldfields Limited (NGG) in 1982 as an exploration venture. Following an intensive drilling programme in the Upper Ridges area sufficient ore reserves were outlined to justify the installation of a new 700 tonnes of ore per day gravity gold extraction plant. Major considerations in the design of the new plant were to minimise production inter- ruptions in the existing plant and to include simple, but technically efficient, equipment that could be operated and maintained by a workforce with limited experience in modern technology. These goals were achieved over a six month period, commissioning being carried out in April, 1983. Mining the epithermal gold deposit is by open cut benching and truck haulage. The gravity concentrator includes a scrubber, wet hammer mill and rod mill, to crush, grind and prepare the ore for sizing and desliming. Gold recovery units consist of a jig, spirals, shaking tables and amalgam barrels. Although the majority of the gold is in the minus 100 plus 20 microns size fraction a recovery of 63 percent, from a head grade of 2.0g/tonne, is Achieved.

A new separation method based on a combination of coagulation and colum flotation was used to treat fine sphalerite in the range 90 per cent - 15 pm with a relative high superfical gas velocity and a thick froth layer. Minerals studied include sphalerite, calcite, kaolinite and baryte. A new developed sedimentometer was used for sedimentation analysis to characterise hetercoagulation of mixture and coagulation after addition of active ions or reagents. A comparison between use of selective frother and depressant (SHMP) was made to deactivate activated minerals. Selectivity of frother for sphalerite was found in flotation test. The depression function of Flotanol for activated minerals was confirmed in sedimentation alalysis. The use of small quantities of HPAM can improve the flotation of fine sized sphalerite particle and reduce recovery of activated gangue minerals in the neutral or alkaline pulp. A satisfactory separation of fine sphalerite from its gangue was achieved by using alkylpolyglycolether (Flotanol) and copolymer polyacrylamide (HPAM hydrolysed polyacrylamide) as frothing and flocculating agents Respectively.

The Murray Basin is known to contain major deposits of heavy mineral sands and intensive exploration for new deposits is being conducted in Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales. The western Basin was well served in the Pliocene and Early Pleistocene by a variety of appropriate sediment sources, and potential coastal traps. Immature, fluvially-sourced sediments forming the Pliocene coastal complex of the Marmon-Jabuk Range in South Australia are part of a marginal marine assemblage containing a suite of economically important heavy minerals that include ihnenite, zircon, rutile and tourmaline. From a consideration of Pliocene palaeogeography and coastal dynamics, specific targets where concentrating processes are likely to have operated are identified in the South Australian portion of the Murray Basin. Such palaeo-environments include the down-drift, littoral zone of discrete foredunes or coastal barriers, the source area for transgressive dune complexes, tombolo facies, and intertidal shoals and sandbanks. Similar coastal processes are recognised for a preserved Early Pleistocene barrier complex.

A major issue presently faced by companies producing and processing iron ore is the need to maximise throughput while minimising capital expenditure. While present high demand means this is of prime importance, the perennial issues of maintenance, operating costs, reliability, quality and environmental sustainability are also critical to profi tability. Attempts to address these issues generally require modifi cations to existing equipment, or trials of new equipment when designing plant for new projects.The risk involved can be substantially minimised by testing equipment improvements using advanced computational models prior to implementation. Examples of application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Discrete Element Method (DEM) modelling to sampling, cyclones, conveyor transfers, classifiers, dust control, banana screens, comminution and smelt-reduction will be given to illustrate the benefi ts of such an approach. *This is an abstract only. Projects to be undertaken in remote locations require special attention with regard to constructability from the very first stages of design. This is to ensure not only that the project is compatible with the environment in which it' is proposed to be built, but that it does not require facilities or special construction equipment and expertise that is not available in the proposed location. This paper draws on experiences gained on projects in Alaska, Northern Canada, South East Asia, outback Australia, and more recently Bougainville, in Papua New Guinea, where over the past 5 years Minenco has undertaken in excess of A$120 million of work on a number of different projects for Bougainville Copper Limited Although many of these projects have been close to large populous cities, which have been served by regular shipping and airline services, the locations have not had the availability of construction facilities which exist in major cities of Australia and thus can only be considered as remote locations by current day standards. As a result, every nut bolt and washer has had to be brought to the job site by the construction company. This paper describes a new methodology that can be applied to compare several bench extraction strategies requiring backfill. The method is applicable at the planning or operational stages and can be used to maintain dilution within design parameters and improve the overall economics of bench stoping operations. The parameters influencing bench performance have been empirically rated based on economical, geomechanical, operational and backfill properties. Four different extraction strategies have been considered and rated from most preferred to less preferred using an integrated approach to bench extraction.
