Much interesting data on cemented carbides has been published over a period of years which, when classified and pieced together, gives a clear picture of this special branch of powder metallurgy. This is an attempt to present the essential information in an ordered account.THE HARD CARBIDES-THEIR PROPERTIES AND PREPARATIONThe so-called hard or refractory carbides are the carbides of a number of metals which are grouped together in the Periodic Classification. These metals are in groups IV, V and VI. They are titanium, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, niobium (columbium), molybdenum, hafnium, tantalum and tungsten. These carbides have attracted the attention of chemists because of their remarkable properties. They possess very high melting points, and are rather difficult to prepare in the pure state. Their outstanding propertyis their extreme hardness, which they share with certain other carbides, such as those of silicon and boron. In addition, these compounds possess distinctly metallic properties, such as lustre (in fused specimens) and high thermal conductivities.(l)t They are capable of forming alloys in two ways:1. With metals, particularly those of the iron group. 2. With each other (a case of solid solubility).The constitution of these substances is not that of ordinary salts, which obey the usual valency rules, but must be likened to that of certain intermetallic compounds. Actually they are "interstitial" compounds(2), that is, they are formed from the ordinary metallic lattice by the insertion of the relatively small carbon atoms in the interstices.. The energy required to fill the lattice completely is high, and this explains the difficulty often found in obtaining the exact stoicheiometric compound. Thus the carbides can have a range of composition, and can be considered as solutions of carbon in the respective metals.Physical Properties of the CarbidesThe hardness of these compounds is so great that it is difficult to compare the individual compounds on this basis. Becker(l) gives values on Moh's scale, which are not very accurate and are of no great value. Burden(3) has reproduced a diagram by Hatfield which indicates that the cemented carbides are between 1,400 and 2,000 on the Vickers diamond scale. However, the pure carbides are harder, tungsten carbide being about 2,200. Hoyt(4) describes a method of measuring hardness applicable to powdered specimenswhereby the powder is rubbed on a standard block of cemented tungsten carbide under standard conditions, and the rate of wear is determined. Upgrading of a Koolanooka magnetite iron ore sample provided by Kingstream Steel Ltd was investigated using low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and reverse flotation. The ore contained 38.6 per cent iron, 37.8 per cent silica, 6.5 per cent magnesia and 0.54 per cent alumina, with the main minerals in the ore being amphibole (42 per cent), magnetite (39 per cent) and quartz (14 per cent). The concentrate obtained after low intensity magnetic separation contained 66.6 per cent iron and 6.34 per cent silica with an iron recovery of 72 per cent. This concentrate was further treated by reverse flotation to increase the iron content and reduce the silica content to meet the requirements for direct reduction iron (DRI) feed grade.

The Tolukuma gold-silver prospect is located approximately 100km N of Port Moresby in the Central Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Epithermal "adularia-sericite" style mineralisation crops out over 1200m within an en echelon quartz veined zone 1 to lOm wide. At a 4g/t cut-off grade, a geological resource of approximately 1.47Mt @ 13.77g/t Au is indicated from 38 diamond drill holes completed since discovery by Newmont Pty Ltd in September 1986. At a regional scale, Tolukuma miner- alisation appears localised in a dilatant zone at the intersection of a 1150 magnetic structure, and the western margin of a N-S trending graben which is filled by a Pliocene volcanic complex contemporaneous with the Mt Davidson Volcanics 30km to the W. A l0km diameter circular Landsat feature, which may reflect magma emplacement at depth, occurs immediately N of Tolukuma and nearby mineralisation. Mineralisation at Tolukuma occurs in sub-vertical quartz veins at, or adjacent to the faulted contact between Pliocene basic and intermediate volcanics/intrusives, and quartz mica schists and phyllites of the Cretaceous Kagi Metamorphics. Most veins display evidence of multiple episodes of brecciation and textures indicative of cyclic boiling, including crustiform rhythmic banding and quartz pseudomorphs after platy calcite.

After completing a feasibility study in 1987, Niugini Mining Limited (NML) obtained five Gold Mining Leases within PA 632, covering the Mount Victor and Clarkes Ridge gold deposits. Reserves prior to mining were 260 000t at 3.63g/t Au for Mount Victor and 40 000t at 2.8g/t Au for Clarkes Ridge. Ore was mined from the two deposits by NML from November 1987 to January 1990. A total of 645kg of gold and 346kg of silver were produced from 198 000 tonnes of ore pro- cessed. Mining and milling operations ceased in February 1990. Since then, there has been significant progress in rehabilitating and revegetating the site. Plant and workshop facilities have been dismantled and removed from site, exposed parts of the pit have been landscaped and replanted, tailings water has been neutralised and discharged, and the dam filled. All remaining personnel and equipment left the site in November 1990. It is envisaged that the replanted areas will be rapidly revegetated, leaving little evidence of mining. Niugini Mining did not recoup the initial investment for Mount Victor, but the mine produced a positive cash flow and made a significant' financial contribution to the local communities and Papua New Guinea as a Whole.

The association of deep well turbine type pumps with metal mining is by no means a new one, though undoubtedly each application has certain features of interest, conformable with attendant circumstances. Although all conditions pertaining to a particular operation in one mine are rarely, if ever, duplicated in another mine, it is felt that some aspects will be parallel, or in various ways comparable.Therefore the following descriptions of an installation of a deep well turbine pump as part of dewatering plant in connection with shaft sinking may be of general interest to metal mine operators.The Man and Supply shaft at Mount Isa Mines is designed as shown in plan by Fig. 1. It is the main entrance and service shaft for the entire property and hence is in constant use. Arrangements for sinking must be such as to cause little or no impediment to routinehoisting work. Also, being the main shaft, it has been essential to deepen it in step with successive level developments.During the period of operations at Mount Isa only a limited time has been available to complete succeeding levels down to the present No. 7 haulage level (895 ft.), and sinking operations in soft, broken, leached, and heavy water-bearing country have presented many features militating against reasonable speed and cost. Outstanding among these difficulties has been the large volume of water contained in the pervious brecciated country.

When the mining and milling of 1100 copper orebody commenced at Mount Isa a satisfactory grade of copper concentrate was difficult to produce. The major concentrate contaminants were fine pyrite and silica, particularly in the minus 10 microns fraction. Studies of the 1100 orebody showed that much of the fine grained pyrite and a proportion of the silica present in the ore contained carbonaceous matter in the form of complete or partial rims and as internal carbon films disseminated throughout grains. The hydrophobic surface property of the carbonaceous material resulted in inherently flotable fine pyrite and siliceous particles.The addition of a 60:40 mixture of nigrosine and dextrine, initially to a prefloat concentrate of the inherently flotable carbonaceous material and finally to the total copper flotation feed, successfully controlled the flotation rates of the carbonaceous pyrite and silica. The objective of a 25 per cent Cu concentrate grade was then achieved without decreasing copper recovery.

The Pilbara region of Western Australia is well known for its abundant exports of hematite-goethite deposits, which have been mined and exported since the 1960s. Magnetite has also been mined in Australia throughout this period, although historically of much lower production volumes (WA Iron Ore profile, 2016). Magnetite offers a source supply of material >66 per cent iron grade product, which is used as premium feed (predominantly pellets) to blast furnaces or specialised steel mills.The Iron Bridge project area contains outcropping magnetite and hematite banded iron formation (BIF), which within the region was recognised as having potential to host economic mineralisation during the 1960s. Development within the project area, however, did not commence until Fortescue Metals Group acquired the tenements based on a 2004 agreement, formed a joint venture with interested groups and then initiated an assessment for magnetite (rather than hematite) mining potential. The combined deposits now have an identified large mineral resource inventory, with test work demonstrating they are able to produce a magnetite concentrate of greater than 66 per cent Fe over an extended mine life. This concentrate would be suitable for forming pellets or feed for direct reduced iron products.The deposits form a singular orebody, approximately 12 km in length by 1 km in width and extending to depths beyond 600 m. The four main deposits are geographically separate and have subtle mineralogical differences, thought driven by the degree of deformation and alteration within each area.Definition of the stratigraphy, structure and key mineralogy of the deposits has been carried out through several stages of exploration and project development. This has also included recent mining and processing of more than 1 Mt of feed material to an on-site processing facility. This demonstrated at a production scale that dry plus wet processing techniques can efficiently separate the magnetite from the gangue minerals to form a suitable (marketable) product.Geometallurgical classification of the host stratigraphy has been carried out from analysing the high volume of quantitative data available for this deposit. This has allowed definition of mappable units within the fresh BIF to be used as a driver in mine scheduling, delivering optimal feed to the processing plant.Construction of mine and processing facilities is expected to commence once all technical risks have been addressed, market conditions are deemed appropriate and approval is given by the joint venture partners.CITATION:Simpson, C, 2017. Industrial Minerals production in New Zealand is limited in both quantity and range, but imported in quantities that make New Zealand the world's biggest consumer per head of population. The use of industrial minerals is assured as both population and standard of living increase regularly. But to develop these minerals in the New Zealand environment requires the mineral, or its market (both local and export), to have characteristics that negate the remote geographical location. Volume and/or uniqueness can achieve this.

There are many technologies available today in terms of fire and life safety in road tunnels. So many in fact that it is becoming more and more difficult for clients and contractors alike to determine what they want and what they need. From a clientÆs perspective, fire and life safety is about protection to its infrastructure and to the public at large. Conversely, the contractor is looking to meet its æfit for purposeÆ or ædeem to complyÆ requirements in the most economic and practicable way. Practices regarding fire and life safety in road tunnels have undergone a degree of transformation during the last decade or more throughout the world. This transformation has largely been driven by a series of catastrophic accidents such as the major fires in Europe including the Mont Blanc Tunnel, Tauern Tunnel, Saint-Gothard Tunnel, and now most recently in the CityLink Tunnels in Melbourne. International guidelines produced by organisations such as the Permanent International Association of Road Congresses (PIARC), the European Union, the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) and the US National Fire Protection Authority (NFPA) now provide clients, owners and designers with the tools required to define and specify the required fire and life safety systems in road tunnels. The majority of these tools are based on risk assessment and risk management. Recent road tunnel projects within Australia, however, have not referred solely to such guidelines. Clients have opted to prescribe different or additional fire and life safety requirements within the projectÆs technical specification documentation (project requirements), leaving designers and contractors with little room to implement alternatives or substitutions. Further, these project requirements are largely dictated by practice established on previous road tunnel projects within Australia. This paper looks at the current international guidelines and practices and undertakes a comparison with the EastLink tunnels in Melbourne and other road tunnels within Australia and makes assessment on whether Australian methods are the most appropriate for clients and contractors alike. Focus is directed to the key elements of fire and life safety such as:traffic envelope, barrier arrangements and emergency walkway provisions;deluge systems;drainage systems;fire rating requirements;tunnel ventilation systems;cross passage provisions;fire safety assessment;critical intelligence systems including help phones, CCTV, incident detection, tunnel signage, etc; andexternal tunnel control systems.

An understanding of the origin of mineral deposits and their relationship to local and global geotectonics is essential if regional targets for mineral exploration are to be chosen. Volcanism, metamorphism and tectonism are especially significant for the origin and emplacement of mineral deposits, which, far from being fortuitous oddities of nature, occupy well defined positions within distinctive lithofacies. Thus, suggestions for mineral exploration targets can be made taking into consideration the position of 'fossil' convergent and divergent plate tectonic boundaries to indicate areas of specific types of mineralisation. To be borne in mind, though, that level of exposure, time and location of magma generation are all additional and important controlling factors. To further understand the importance of the above parameters, one must refer to the concept of paired metamorphic belts (Miyashiro 1973) which develop during an orognic cycle. These belts are generally constructed in such a way that an ophiolite type complex with metamorphic grades related to high pressure and moderate temperature regimes is flanked by an area of calc-alkaline volcanism and granitic activity with metamorphic grades within a region of high temperature and low pressure. The former situation is usually the seat of primary magmatic mineralisation, whereas the latter contains base metal. Deposits of acid plutonic and volcanic association. As will be seen later, this particular metamorphic-volcano-orogenic situation is well developed in some parts of New Zealand. For the present purpose a distribution of potential ores as related to plate tectonic processes is given below:a) Divergent plate boundaries: primary magmatic Ni-Cu, Pt,Cr, PeS2 and Cu, Pb,Zn in hot brines-hydrothermal environments Mn deposits.b) Convergent plate boundaries: stratabound Cu-Fb-Zn-Ag of felsic volcanogenic association. Porphyry eu-Au of island arc type, porphyry Cu-Mo of continental type. Cu, Au, Y, Sn, Hg, Sb of vein type and replacement lode related to granitic activity.c) Au of hydrothermal vein association, related to late dynamo-metamorphic events. By virtue of ocean floor spreading, regions of divergent plate boundaries are eventually juxtaposed or welded n to areas where plate collisions occur. This is then followed by partial melting due to various causes, just above the descending plate; thus creating a zone of acid to intermediate magmatism. The final picture is that of an orogenic zone with the paired metamorphic belts outlined above.

The Palaeo-Proterozoic Transvaal Supergroup in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa is host to the largest known resources of high-grade hematite ore on the Southern African continent. These ores are currently being exploited at Sishen and Beeshoek. Hematite occurances on the Sishen South exploration project (some 65 km south of Sishen mine), are at present the focus of an intensive investigation. At both the Sishen and Sishen South deposits, mineralisation is found within lithologies belonging to the Transvaal and Oliphantshoek Supergroups. The Transvaal Supergroup comprises a basal, carbonate platform sequence (the Campbell Rand Subgroup) overlain by thick units of banded iron-formation belonging to the Asbestos Hills Subgroup. The Asbestos Hills Subgroup is unconformably overlain by sedimentary rocks of the Gamagara Subgroup. The latter Subgroup has been correlated with the lowermost unit of the Oliphantshoek Supergroup. The Sishen and Sishen South deposits are located close to the western margin of the Kaapvaal craton and have been subjected to intensive, structural deformation. Both localities have undergone folding, faulting and thrusting. Early regional tectonism (2400 - 1700 Ma) played a critical role in the genesis and preservation of the ores from younger erosive events. At both deposits, four similar iron ore occurrences have been recognised. The ores have developed in specific depositional environments and hence display unique physical, chemical and metallurgical properties:The bulk of the high-grade hematite comprises laminated and massive ores, which are found in the upper parts of the Asbestos Hills Subgroup. The laminated and massive ores are best developed in basinal and pseudo-graben structures. Collapse breccia ores of medium- and lower-grade are preserved within deep palaeosinkholes. The sinkholes have developed within the dolomites of the Campbellrand Subgroup. Lower-grade conglomeratic and gritty ores constitute the remainder of the deposits. These ores are found in the overlying clastic succession of conglomerates, shales and quartzites belonging to the Gamagara Subgroup. Although, there are many stratigraphic and lithological similarities between the Sishen and Sishen South deposits, there are also important differences, which will impact on the profitable exploitation of the ores. The most striking contrast between the deposits is their size and geometry. Sishen mine is a single pit operation with an opencast mineable reserve of 895 Mt. The Sishen orebody is thicker, more continous and significantly larger than the Sishen South deposit. The Sishen South deposit has a potential opencast reserve of 228 Mt. It comprises a number of small and narrow, isolated orebodies, spread over an area of ¦64 km2 . There is a significant difference in grade between the deposits. On average the orebodies of the Sishen South deposit have a higher iron content (+0.25 per cent Fe), less potassium (- 0.090 per cent K2O) and less phosphorus (-0.019 per cent P). The Sishen South deposit has less interbedded shale in the laminated and massive ores. The footwall of these high-grade ores is a light-density, intrusive sill, compared to banded iron-formation at Sishen. With a proposed heavy-medium separation plant at Sishen South, the impact of dilution on product grades is expected to be less than that currently experienced at Sishen.

In the Ngakuru area, zeolite deposits occur in late Quaternary lake sediments and ignimbrites. The deposits are associated with sinters, hydrothermal eruption breccias, and quartz-adularia altered fault breccias: all indicators of a shallow epithermal environment. Several of the deposits are adjacent to epithermal gold prospects. Zeolites are most abundant in lacustrine tuffs of the Ngakuru Formation, a 100-300 m thick sequence of siltstone, tuff, diatomite, sandstone and conglomerate. The formation overlies the Ohakuri Ignimbrite dated at c. 270 Ka, and is unconformably overlain by alluvial sands and gravels which are younger than 20 Ka. Individual zeolite deposits contain 30-80 per cent zeolite over a thickness of up to 45 m in thinly stratified tuff beds. The tuff beds are locally overlain by diatomite. The tuffs are composed mainly of glass shards and pumice clasts, with minor volcanic plagioclase, quartz and biotite crystals. Glass shards in the tuffs are replaced by the silica-rich zeolites mordenite and clinoptilolite. Amorphous silica (opal A), opal-CT, K-feldspar and smectite are also present. The distribution of the Ngakuru Formation is controlled by northeast trending normal faults, which separate it into the Ngakuru and Guthrie grabens. A silicified (quartz-adularia altered) hydrothermal breccia along one of the fault zones suggests that the faults acted as feeders for heated water that caused the deposition of the zeolite minerals. Some of the zeolite deposits are adjacent to sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccias. The location of the sinter about 20 m above one deposit indicates that the zeolites were formed at a depth of 20 to 70 m below the paleosurface. The hydrothermal eruption breccias contain clasts of altered ignimbrite, which contain geochemically anomalous gold and silver values. By analogy with their occurrence in active geothermal systems in the Taupo Volcanic Zone, mordenite and clinoptilolite in the Ngakuru deposits probably formed at temperatures of 60-150oC from near-neutral pH waters as a result of interaction with glass-rich tuff beds. The Ngakuru zeolite deposits are therefore interpreted as shallow hydrothermal alteration zones within larger epithermal gold-bearing systems.

In most mines using presplitting the final excavated wall shows a zone of damage just below the crest and well defined presplit half barrels. The crest damage (surface dilation) zone varies and is added to by subsequent adjacent perimeter blasting operations. Keeping the preconditioning to a minimum is possible using the methods described in this paper, developed on several diverse and geographically distant mining operations to control crest dilation and preconditioning by presplitting in advance - not just laterally but vertically in advance. The first documented case (Delbridge, Marton and McSweeney, 2004) in the development of the concept was undertaken at AngloGold Australia Pty Ltd's Sunrise Dam Gold Mine (SDGM), located beside Lake Carey, some 730 km northeast of Perth, Western Australia. The mine had been developed in a series of cutbacks to a depth of over 300 m and began underground mining during the latter stages of open cut operations. This mine is fairly unique in that it utilised a single pass vertical presplit which initially extended over three bench heights and after the failure mechanisms were understood, over four benches. The presplit drilling for the three stacked benches started on the floor of the second bench so that any dilation was confined to the surface one bench above the crest and modified perimeter blasting was then developed to curtail damage from blasting adjacent to the new crest. The second case is based on a South African coal mine in the Witbank Coal Measures, 140 km northeast of Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa (RSA). It was important that blasting for optimal wall stability and minimal scaling was developed in advance. A dragline is scheduled to excavate the #2 seam midburden which is the lowest of the economically viable coal seams in the five seam Witbank Coal Measures. Mining of the overburden, coal and partings above the dragline midburden pass are by excavator and truck and each mining layer is individually blasted. The results of presplitting the midburden through the overlying coal seams and partings have provided a presplit with no surface dilation of the midburden crest and ensures any subsequent crest loss is solely due to blasting adjacent to the vertical presplit. Typical of all coal mines in South Africa only vertical presplits are used. Wall control is most commonly delivered by presplit blasting and one common sight after the dust clears is a ridge of broken blocks along the presplit row, usually with a main crack running between the presplit blastholes and often parallel cracks either side of the perimeter line. The surface rock strata or block structures have been dilated by the venting gases and shock waves. Decoupled, fully coupled, single or double deck charges are used depending on a variety of factors, anecdotal practices and perceived benefits. Preconditioning of the crest rock by blasting from above may not be visible to the naked eye (or non-existent in overburden in strip coal mines) but the high speed venting of explosives gases (and often the water in the presplits) preferentially follow existing cracks and structures because there is no developed presplit crack near the surface. This nearly always lifts, shifts and separates the surface structures and geological layers. Stopping the dilation by 'sacrificial' or 'in advance' presplitting has been shown to reduce the crest loss at both metal and coal mines. Drilling and presplit blasting through an upper level of bench or layer provides a degree of restraint to the target layer where the crest must be maintained and any damage caused by the venting gases will not cause concern as it is removed as planned, leaving a stable crest.

Geological mapping in various parts of Australia is revealing a number of regional associations of mineralizations with particular persistent stratigraphic horizons. Such associations have been found in the Broken Hill district of New South Wales, in the Nairne district of South Australia, in the Mount Isa district of Queensland, and in the Cloncurry district of Queensland. The question has arisen as to whether such mineralizations are of sedimentary origin, syngenetic with the enclosing formation, or whether they are of epigenetic origin, and reflect the selective hydrothermal mineralization of favourable beds on a regional scale.The purpose of this investigation is to test the use of sulphur-selenium ratios as an objective method of distinguishing between suphide deposits or sedimentary or supergene origin, and sulphide deposits of hydrothermal origin, with particular application to the districts mentioned. At the same time much data has been accumulated as to the selenium content of Australian sulphide ores. The possible use of sulphur-selenium ratios for this purpose was first demonstrated by Goldschmidt and his coworkers (1933; 1935), and later by Carstens (1941). Goldschmidt and Strock (1935) found that pyrite of sedimentary origin had a sulphur : selenium ratio of the order of 200,000 or more, whereas pyrite of hydrothermal origin had a sulphur: selenium ratio of 10,000 to 20,000. Carstensfound that sedimentary pyrite deposits in Norway contained less than 1 g. Se per ton, whereas hydrothermal pyrite deposits contained 20 to 30 g. per ton.

The Estonia Mine, operated by Eesti Energia Kaevandused AS (EEK), the mining division of the Estonian Government's energy company, Eesti Energia AS, is a large room and pillar mine located in Eastern Estonia. It supplied approximately 4.9 Mt/a of oil shale in financial year ending 2010, which is used for electricity and shale oil generation. Due to the Estonian climate and the power station's need for a dry product, Estonia Mine has developed a planning system where short-term demands of the power stations dictate the schedule. Such an arrangement requires maximising flexibility and consequently the mine only operated for 199 days in 2010.The footprint plays a key role in achieving mass mining rates as the 12 km + 12 km lease area allows the mine to split into mining districts that act independently of each other and maximise the number of work areas available. Coupled with this, the geology of the mine is relatively homogenous over the mining lease, simplifying the mine design and production methods.During the last five years, EEK has commissioned a comprehensive conveyor network. Consequently, material handling only requires loaders to dump oil shale direct from the production face onto a chain conveyor that feeds the conveyor network that ultimately supplies the enrichment plant. Dewatering is also of critical importance, with 90 Mm3 of water discharged annually. EEK uses large trenches up to 3.5 m deep and 1.2 m wide to channel groundwater. Track mounted mechanical saws are used to cut slots in the floor, to control overbreak in blasting these trenches.EEK has introduced Salzgitter Machinenbau GB 280S auger drills that drill three 280 mm diameter holes simultaneously. This has improved void hole drilling times and reduced the drilling required for each face, reducing the overall production cycle time. Blasting activities have also been decoupled from other mining activities negating the need for firing times through the use of small independent firings, required to control vibrations.

Being a source of structural materials for many centuries, the modern image of the ferrous metallurgy is burdened with obsolete technologies with disregard towards new environmental protection requirements. The production cycle of metallurgical products have two clear-cut stages: I . production of liquid metal and casting into steel billets; and 2. processing of steel billets in solid state under high temperature to produce various shapes and profiles of metal products. Plastic deformation of metal at the second stage is least associated with environmental pollution and is presently being provided with more and more advanced equipment.

Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and quantitative X-ray diffraction (QXRD) techniques are capable of providing high-quality quantitative information regarding the phase mineralogy and distribution of alumina within iron ore samples. The techniques, however, use different methodologies in determining the mineralogical information (ie structural versus chemical), which introduces some limitations. In this study, EPMA was used to identify and quantify the deportment of alumina within mineral phases in iron ore samples (-1 mm crushed) sourced from different suppliers. Results were directly compared with quantitative mineralogical data derived from QXRD to provide an evaluation of the relative merits of both techniques. The four ores studied contained alumina either in the form of gibbsite, aluminosilicates (eg kaolinite), or associated with goethite.For minor phases, gibbsite and kaolinite, the abundance trends measured via QXRD were generally reflected in the EPMA data. Agreement was less satisfactory for the more abundant goethite phase (both low- and high-Al forms). The discrepancy may be the result of sampling issues arising from textural features such as grain size, and also a systematic overestimate in the amount of Al-rich goethite when hematite and Al-bearing phases are finely intermixed and the EPMA step size is coarse. A second difference in the EPMA results compared to the QXRD data was in regard to quantification of low-Al and high-Al goethite phases. The sensitivity of the chemical-based EPMA was better for distinguishing between high- and low-Al goethite although the results remain overprinted by potential errors introduced via sampling.Care should be taken when directly comparing results from each method, although in general the data should be considered complementary, as each approach provides slightly different results and interpretations regarding the overall mineralogy.CITATION:Pownceby, M I, MacRae, C M and Torpy, A, 2017. There has been a gradual increase in the volume of internationally traded thermal and coking coal, with emphasis on blending of coals rather than single coal usage. New Zealand can take advantage of this situation, especially with its low ash and sulphur content coals. However, there is a need to clarify the thermal and coking behaviour of these coals as they relate to other market players, to benefit both the consumer and supplier. The high volatile matter contents of New Zealand coking coals are due to their high vitrinite content, which causes them to demonstrate stronger coking properties over a wider rank range than Gondwana coals. These same high vitrinite levels appear to correspond with lower initial softening temperatures than for Gondwana coals of similar rank. Preliminary results using thermogravimetric analysis also suggest that New Zealand high volatile bituminous coals can be used to substitute for higher rank Gondwana coals in combustion processes.

Building the Unified Comminution Model The Unified Comminution Model (UCM) was formulated with the vision of bringing all comminution models onto a common base. The structure of the model relies on knowledge of the mechanical environment in the comminution devices to predict the modes and rates of collision in a device. A detailed understanding of the breakage modes and an ability to correctly test these modes for the ores in question is then required to feed into the UCM. A model structure has been developed that has the capability of dealing with multiple modes of breakage, such as low energy impact surface damage, chipping, sliding abrasion, cumulative impact body breakage and the transition of rock between modes. A critical review is presented on the shortcomings and limitations of utilising the discrete element method (DEM) to provide the mechanical environments. The assumptions and applicability of utilising DEM in milling models are presented and proposed routes to building a realistic mechanistic model are proposed. Based on this more realistic measures of collision energy have been derived from the DEM simulations, which better mimic the real breakage tests. Generic forms of the collision energy distributions have been observed and developed into functional forms for use in the simulation environment. The method of application of this model to a pilot SAG mill is presented.

Mining education has received almost continuous discussion since its inception and most people engaged in the mining industry and in mining education feel at some time the urge and necessity to express their views. This paper is not a comprehensive survey of past and present practices and accepted principles, but a personal opinion of the form mining education should take at university level. It is expressed because of a dissatisfaction with the existing courses offered to students. It is hoped to provoke discussionand bring forth guidance to those engaged in mining education. After all, students spend four or five years at a university and it is desirable that the graduate should be something more than just those many years older at the end of his course.POST GRADUATE EMPLOYMENTThe first problem confronting the university should, be to discover what the mining industry wants and expects or graduates. This must influence the university course and yet universities have done little to seek this information, and if suggestions have been offered by industry; universities appear to have made little use of them. University mining curricula are basically what they were 50, 100 and even 200 years ago. (See Appendix.)
