Application of thermal oxidation is considered a promising technique in reducing fugitive methane gas from ventilation air methane (VAM). A typical thermal oxidiser operates with diluted methane and converts it to less potent greenhouse gases. However, having a thermal oxidiser in the vicinity of the coalmine exhaust shaft is a major safety concern as its high operation temperature increases the likelihood of accidental fire and explosion. The aim of this study is to investigate the application and effectiveness of side venting technique in reduction of deflagration consequences caused by methane gas. To address this importance a series of experiments were conducted on a detonation tube designed and fabricated as part of larger scale VAM Abatement safety project. The experimental work was carried out into two stages: examine the flame and explosion properties in a large-scale detonation tube to get reliable data; and then design and employ a venting system into the detonation tube to verify the effectiveness and performance of the venting against the flame and explosion.Results corresponding to this study show that the side vent duct with venting coefficient magnitude of 37 had a significant influence on methane flame deflagration and the explosion characteristics. The maximum pressure rise at the detonation tube reduced approximately 20 per cent to 32 per cent by applying the side venting duct. Also, the data shows that the venting damped the pressure oscillation after the flame deflagration which eventually reduced the system instability. Proposals designed to use stockpiles and buffer stocks to achieve price stabilization and better resource use have a long history. They are super- ficially simple to understand. The benefits seem clear. And yet I am well aware that this is not a simple subject: the more one studies it, the more complex it becomes. Worldwide interest in re- source management, while receiving fresh impetus from the OPEC actions, also has a long and chequered history. Those venturing into such ter- ritories must be forewarned of the traps and pit- falls which abound. Interest in these schemes has waxed and waned over the years with the fluctuating fortunes of the producers or consumers. As I write this paper towards the end of 1977, I am acutely aware of the low ruling prices for zinc, copper, and nickel. These sacrifice prices remind me that it is difficult, for example, for a surveyor, to be calm and rational if he is up to his neck in a swamp full of crocodiles. He might be forgiven for forgetting that the aim was to drain the swamp! I am also aware that when swamps are drained, painful and dangerous stumps sometimes stick out. Hence, in looking at the subject of stockpiles and resource management we must not set our sights too high, perhaps not initially hope for perfec- tion, if we want to secure worthwhile changes. My approach is to acknowledge a bias for the market system. We have, however, had experience (remember the 1930s) of some weaknesses in the untrammelled operation of free markets. Thus our international economic relationships over the past 20 or 30 years have been based on a desire to retain as much as possible of a liberal world trading system backed by such organizations as the GATT, IMF, and the U.N. to ensure the necessary cooperation. Some nations have seen this system work only partially in their best in- terests. GATT, for example, has been reasonably effective in liberalizing trade in many manufac- tured goods but far less so in regard to agricultural or semi-processed goods.

Rampura Agucha Pb-Zn Mine (RAM) is located about 200 km to the south-west of Jaipur in the state of Rajasthan, India. Open pit mining operations commenced in 1988 and continued to 2018. RAM open pit footprint is the largest in India with length of 2000 m, width 1500 m and depth of 400 m. Development of an underground mine under the operating pit commenced in 2013, through trial mining longhole open stoping with cemented backfill was established as a preferred mining method. Nine years in operations underground mine has reached the production capacity of 4.5 MT, which represent more than 70 per cent of the ore volume mined by the pit. RAM is currently the world second largest underground Pb-Zn mine.

"Dynamic decision-making can significantly increase the value of mining projects and deliver better sustainability outcomes under conditions of uncertainty. Despite its benefits, dynamic decision-making is rarely used by the mining industry, possibly because of the complexity of the algorithms used to make sequential decisions under uncertainty and difficulties in visualising the optimal strategies. To achieve better outcomes in practice, decision-makers in industry would benefit from a tool that would help them to understand and implement the results of the analysis.CSIRO is developing innovative dynamic decision support tools that include an intuitive graphical display of the boundaries between the regions of different optimal decisions, which would significantly assist optimal sequential decision-making under uncertainty. The dynamic decision support tool is based on novel stochastic optimal control methodologies that can be used to optimise decisions in situations with multiple uncertain variables and decisions (Tarnopolskaya, Chen and Bao, 2015; Chen et al, 2015; Langrené et al, 2015). During underground mining operations, rock masses are highly subjected to dynamic disturbance caused by blasting, mechanical drilling and earthquakes resulting in strain burst, slabbing and spalling. The dynamic fracture is a significant manifestation of rock failure in deep underground engineering, and it is of great importance to assess the dynamic fracture behaviour of the rock mass under elevated temperature conditions. The correlation between temperature – and loading rate-dependent dynamic fracture mechanism of strain burst is yet to be established. A good understanding of the dynamic fracture behaviour of brittle rock subjected to high-temperature under dynamic loading is required for the prediction of the damage extent during strain burst, and proper design as well as control of the underground rock structures. In this study, dynamic mode I fracture toughness tests are carried out on cracked chevron notched semicircular (CCNSCB) granite specimens to reveal the dynamic fracture characteristics of the brittle rock. For this purpose, a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) apparatus is utilised to conduct the dynamic tests with various striker velocities on thermally degraded granite. The dynamic mechanical behaviour of granite after high-temperature treatment is examined and discussed. The dynamic fracture toughness is determined and compared for the specimens exposed to different temperatures at various dynamic impacts. The fracturing processes are recorded by a high-speed camera (HSC), and the crack propagation speeds are estimated by HSC image analysis. In addition, the dynamic fracture process and the coupled effects of temperature and loading rate on the dynamic fracture modes are identified by HSC image analysis. Energy partition characteristics in dynamic fracture of granite are quantitatively investigated.

Natural Gas has been available in New Zealand for twenty years. During that time the gas share of the energy market has grown and now natural gas forms a significant part of New Zealand's energy scene, helping consumers to achieve a higher standard of living, and reducing dependence upon imported oil.Natural gas is now used for petrochemical manufacture and power generation in addition to direct supply to consumers.As concern for the environment continues to build, natural gas will have an increasingly important role to fill in these markets. This paper sets out the background to the development of natural gas in New Zealand and identifies the current markets. It then looks at those matters which are likely to influence the role of natural gas in the 1990s.

Pounamu is a MSori collective term for semi-precious stone scientifically referred to as nephrite, semi-nephrite, jade or bowenite (tangiwai) that is composed predominantly of metamorphic tremolite in a felted, fibrous texture. It is Aotearoa/New ZealandÆs icon mineral material. Ownership and management of this important taonga (treasure) has been vested in Te Rnnanga o NgSi Tahu as part of a Treaty of Waitangi settlement process. Increasing demand from the tourist, jewellery, fashion and sculpture industries, as well as cultural renaissance, has placed pressure on the pounamu resource. This had led to nephrite importation, allegations that foreign material is being marketed falsely as New Zealand pounamu, and wider concerns over the potential for exploitation/over-use and theft of genuine pounamu.   Research is underway to characterise different pounamu source regions by defining their ægenetic fingerprintÆ. The geological age and radiogenic isotopic composition of Aotearoa/New Zealand pounamu is distinguished from other nephrite jade occurrences overseas, due to relatively young cooling ages. Strontium isotope ratios distinguish pounamu from different source areas within Aotearoa/New Zealand (whakapapa), with signatures reflecting the host terrane rocks (their family) and their position in a sequence of metamorphic events (their generation). The research will provide a tool for archaeological research, trademark and resource protection.   Mineral resource assessments normally aim to define the total volume/tonnage present, which is generally assumed to be finite, applying drilling and geostatistical modelling. Pounamu resource assessment requires a different approach, as its intrinsic value is insufficient to warrant modern exploration methods (eg drilling, geophysics). Pounamu is only known to occur at a restricted few in-situ (hard-rock) localities. It is primarily found in transported (alluvial) detrital river and glacial outwash deposits, where collectable material has short term variability due to erosion and transport processes. A new methodology is being developed aiming to define: +        the total resource present, +        the relative rate of change in the availability of that resource through erosion and other geological processes, +        active areas where new material is likely to be exposed (eg by erosion), and +        appropriate extraction rates for sustainable use. The methodology will provide a holistic overview of the resource in different regions of Aotearoa/New Zealand, and may be applicable to other transient or restricted natural resources that occur within geologically active environments (eg supplies of driftwood on beaches).

Analcime-bearing rocks are one of the varieties of raw zeolite material, although the characteristics of analcime are not as good as other kinds of zeolites such as clinoptilolite or mordenite. However, some fields of application of analcime-bearing rock have been found, eg a method of water purification has been developed and patented. Analcime-bearing rocks are rather widespread in the Timan region of the Komi Republic of the Russian Federation. They are represented by Upper Permian siltstones and mudstones. The analcime-bearing rocks have the following mineral composition (per cent): clay minerals (50 - 70 per cent), quartz (ten to 30 per cent), analcime (one to 30 per cent), feldspars (two to ten per cent), carbonates (two to five per cent) and pyroclastic material. Analcime aggregates encrust cavities and infill microfissures in rock. Both microcrystalline (crystals <0.01 mm in size) and medium-crystalline (~0.5 mm) aggregates are observed. The mechanical, gravitational, magnetic, sorption and ion-exchange properties of analcime-bearing rocks have been studied. They are characterised by a high index of grindability and a low index of abradability and crush resistance, low values of the benzol-based pore volume and toluene-based specific surface area, and a medium porosity value. The magnesium based ion-exchange capacity (IEC) ranges from 28.7 to 196 mg+equiv/100 g. Analcime-bearing rocks of the Timan region are characterised by low beneficiation potential. Preliminary ultrasonic treatment of the analcime- bearing rocks is efficient for the destruction of intergrowths along their boundaries and production of free analcime aggregates. The proposed beneficiation procedure yields 95 per cent analcime concentrate. In the Komi Republic, analcime-bearing rocks are utilised in agriculture. They are also used for domestic needs (eg as biotoilets for domestic animals) and the solution of ecological problems (regeneration of soil polluted by oil). We have completed experiments on the purification of potable and industrial water using analcime-bearing rock subjected to thermal treatment. The experiments demonstrated that it was possible to decrease water colouration by 20 per cent, turbidity by 79 per cent, permanganate oxidation by 30 per cent and total iron content by 70 per cent.

Ashanti Goldfields CompanyÆs (AshantiÆs) most recent development is the Geita Project in the Lake Victoria Goldfield of NW Tanzania. It comprises six distinct gold deposits within two mineralised trends: Nyankanga, Lone Cone, Geita Hill (Geita trend) and Matandani, Kukuluma and Area 3 West (Kukuluma trend). Between 1936 and 1966, the Geita area produced an estimated 5.5 M tonnes of ore from five underground deposits at an average recovered grade of 5.3 g/t. The discovery of Nyankanga was made by Ashanti in 1996 from RAB drilling of a +100 ppb Au anomaly in laterite soil above ferricrete cover. The Kukuluma trend was discovered by SAMAX Resources (taken over by Ashanti in 1998) between 1996 and 1997 from RC drilling of a +80 ppb Au laterite soil anomaly. Oxide facies banded iron formation (BIF) of the Upper Nyanzian System forms prominent topographic ridges and is the dominant host lithology for gold mineralisation. The ridges are flanked by felsic tuff units which lie stratigraphically above. Syn-genetic lamprophyre (vogesite) and post-genetic felsic dykes are also seen in the Geita trend. At Nyankanga a granodiorite-diorite suite has intruded as dykes and sills into BIF from a plug centred on a WNW fault and has produced wallrock alteration assemblages similar to those seen in Cu-porphyry systems (potassic, propylitic, etc) as well as sulphide and gold deposition. However, the main ore-grade mineralisation (as in the rest of the Geita trend) is controlled by low-to-medium angle structures dipping north-west and north with numerous splays in the hanging wall. High-grade shoots at Nyankanga plunge to the west and to the north-west, being lithologically and fault-controlled respectively. At Geita Hill the higher grade shoots are controlled by fold noses in BIF dipping to the north. Free gold occurs within fractures of sulphides. The deposits of Kukuluma and Matandani occur on an ancient (possibly Cretaceous) erosional plateau and are related to two WNW to NW trending shear zones, discordant to the local strike of the BIF sequence. Complete oxidation occurs up to 120 m depth and there is a strong supergene component to the gold distribution. Primary gold mineralisation is divisible into two distinct assemblages: arsenopyriteûpyrrhotiteûmagnetiteûchlorite associated with brecciated cherts and pyrite associated with shaley banded ironstones. Area 3W is most likely the fault-displaced extension of the same mineralised trend and comprises thin, intermittent zones of high-grade gold mineralisation occurring adjacent to a ridge in banded cherts and minor BIF. Current resources (measured, indicated and inferred) for the project are estimated at 89.24 Mt at an average grade of 4.17 g/t (11.97 Moz of contained gold) at a 1.0 g/t cut-off grade. Of this 9.83 Moz is within the Geita trend and 2.14 Moz is within the Kukuluma trend. A resource of 2.74 Moz is from an inferred resource at depth at Nyankanga where the viability of an underground operation is being studied. Proven and probable reserves are 49.77 Mt @ 3.46 g/t (5.54 Moz) based on a $325/oz gold price providing a mine life of ten years at an average production rate of 500 000 oz per year. Reserve estimation was carried out using mineable polygons to select resource blocks based on a series of mining and costs parameters. In addition key cost parameters were tested to provide sensitivities for pit optimisations and pathfinders for negotiations with suppliers and contractors. Construction began in March 1999 and first gold is expected to be poured in the second-quarter 2000.

The society in which we live is one of change, and we professionals are part of that society. The importance of this simple and obvious statement is often overlooked. My Presidential Address examines the question: can professionalism survive in our changing society?There is ample evidence to show that our society is changing, and that the rate of change is exponential. This rapid and accelerating rate of change is what Alvin Tomer refers to as "future shock". Rapid change means that we do not have time to become accustomed to what is happening around us and to feel comfortable with it; the greater the rate of change the greater the discomfort. The effect that this has on people is varied; the change may be either expected or totally unexpected.The rate and extent of change in society is not the same for all countries nor for all industries or occupations. Change is more rapid in Japan, Korea or Taiwan, than in Australia. It is more rapid in our cities than in the bush, more rapid for professional businessmen than for farmers. In our minerals and petroleum industries, we are still adjusting to the great changes that have taken place over the last fifteen years. In the past, products from our industries were sold on a free and open market. Today, mineral development and production in most undeveloped countries and some developed countries is manipulated for political, social and economic reasons. Changes of this nature have had a devastating effect on the operations of established mineral producers in the democracies.Because of the accelerating nature of change, we must recognise that the past is not a reliable guide to the future.Although extrapolation of the past into the future is a basic ingredient of commercial survival, extrapolation is less and less reliable.I borrow from others in quoting the Irish proverb: "The future is not what it was".The future is where our business lies and most of us at this Conference must endeavour to understand it and adjust to it. I believe in the old adage that:You can't know where you're going if you don't know where you've been and where you are at.There are a number of major factors which have created change within our social, economic, and industrial environment in recent years.

On the 18th November, 19'58, the first coal was delivered to the Morwell Power Station from the adjacent Open Cut using conveyors for the transport of the coal from the working face to the boiler bunkers. As the cut develops the coal seam will be worked for its full depth of about 360 feet from four benches, each feeding a conveyor line along th.e face and up out of the cut to the power station and briquette factory. By 1970 the estimated maximum daily demand reaches 60,000 tons and the total annual output 18 million tons. The complete conveyor installation will then total some 9 miles with a capital cost of over £3~ million.The choice of conveyors in place of the more usual rail system was made possible by the development of movable belt conveyors which use mechanical conveyor shifting, high belt speeds and flexible high strength belts and the paper deals with these and some other aspects of the scheme.INTRODUCTIONThe development of brown coal deposits is usually based on open cut workings equipped with a few large dredgers giving an almost continuous output of coal or overburden which has to be hauled a comparatively short distance. These are ideal conditions for conveyor operation, and it is surprising that, until recently, rail transport has been used almost exclusively in brown coal open cuts. In some cases inclined conveyors have been introduced to take the coal from the coal levels up out of the cut to bunkers at groundlevel, but trains have been left to operate between the ditch bunker feeding the conveyor system and the dredger.

Indonesia has the largest coal reserves in the south-east Asian region. According to estimates from the World Energy Confer- ence, it has reserves of 18 billion mt lignite, 4.4 billion mt sub-bituminous coal and 774 million mt bituminous coal (Wyllie,1988). In recent years, substitution of coal for oil in power plants has been the goal of the Indonesian government since proven deposits of coal are about five times as large as national hydrocarbon reserves and most of Indonesia's power stations are still oil fired. Recently a coal fired power plant has been built in Java Barat, which will have a full capacity of about 3000 MW. It is intended to supply coal for this power plant from Bukit Asam mining area (South Sumatra). Coals from Bukit Asam - which are of the lignite or brown coal type - usually contain considerable moisture . It should be noted that reference to moisture in coal pertains to the total moisture content. This is comprised of what is commonly termed as equilibrium moisture and surface moisture. Surface moisture typically affects combustion process as well as pulveriser performance since it possibly influences the relative ease with which coal may be ground. In practice, the surface moisture produces agglomeration of the fines in the pulverising zone and reduces pulveriser drying capacity because of the inability to remove the fines as quickly as they are produced. This agglomeration has also the same effect as coarse coal during the combustion process because the surface area available for the chemical reaction is reduced, hence the combustion efficiency is also reduced. The influence of the moisture of some coals on their grindability (Hardgrove Grindability Index) has been previously correlated by several authors; some of them will be mentioned later. Those correlations, however, could not be immediately applied to any coal since it is still believed that there are other factors which influence the grindability of the coal, such as type and rank of the coal. The relationship between coal moisture content and its grindability has been investigated by Ellmann and Belter (1955). It was found that, for North Dakota lignites, the grindability varied as the moisture content changed. In Britain, Fitton, Hughes and Hurley (1957) stated that, for Bilsthorpe coal, over a wide range of free moisture content (from air-dried to about 30 per cent moisture), the Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) remains virtually unchanged. In addition to that, it was suggested that it would be slightly advantageous to dry the coal below its air-dried moisture content (at temperature ¦ 100¦C) to increase the ease with which coal could be ground, especially for low-volatile coal and high-volatile non-caking coal. Furthermore, it was also concluded that a broad relationship appeared between coal rank and Grindability.

An experienced drill operator is able to make a log of a drill hole defining physical properties of the earth such as hardness or structure as they vary with depth. This log is based on intuition or how the drill æfeelsÆ. Rock characterisation using measure while drilling (MWD) parameters aims at refining this intuition into a package that accurately defines the properties of the subsurface as the drill bit propagates. Subsurface investigation using MWD parameters aims to combine physical drill parameters: Pull down force, rotary speed, penetration rate, torque and vibration in such a way to yield real time rock properties. MWD is investigation in its most primitive form, put simply MWD is merely a physical probe æfeelingÆ what the rock mass is at depth.

Blasting is at first sight a simple operation. Blastholes are drilled in a suitable pattern, primed, charged with explosives, stemmed and finally the blastholes are connected together to give the appro- priate initiation sequence. In practice the action of the explosive takes place in the interior of an opaque rock mass and only the external faces of the rock mass to be blasted can be easily observed. The mechanisms of blasting cannot be observed directly and must be inferred from observations of the free face and meas- urements of particle movement made by sensors grouted into holes in the rock. Explosives react very rapidly, in some microse- conds and any instrumentation of a blast must have an appro- priate response time. In many mines several rock types can be encountered during production. Several different methods of blasting may be necessary to cope with changes in rock types espe- cially if weak rocks are found in the final limits. This also makes it difficult to be sure of getting a large enough volume of rock to perform a series of reproducible experiments. While there appears to be agreement on the mechanism of blasting it is unlikely that a detailed understanding of how all the variables that can be encountered in practice affect blasting. The ease of assessment of the results of blasting depends on the criteria used. It is easy to isolate, measure and count over- size boulders. It is however difficult and costly to get a complete fragment size distribution. Methods used to assess blasting can vary significantly from site to site and the ways in which data are collected, presented and analysed will vary making compari- son of blasts at several locations very difficult. The definition of an optimum blast can also vary with the type of blasting. The muck-pile profile and fragmentation will be different for a dragline to that for a truck and shovel operation. In order to be able to assess blasting the mechanism has to be understood. Th rock and explosive properties considered rele- vant to blasting can then be determined. Until early-1997, Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) generated electrical power for most of north-west Queensland. The discoveries of many new orebodies in the region meant the inevitable increase in power generation requirements for the new mines. In addition, the expansion at Mount Isa itself meant that MIM had to invest in new generating capacity or utilise the existing generating plant more effectively. Using its generating plant more effectively required MIM to undertake rigorous energy management within its own operations. A personal computer based system with a wide area network was installed as the basis for energy management. The result was that energy consumption was reduced, the need for additional generating plant was curtailed, and capital outlay for the generating plant that was required was delayed. As a direct result of energy management, carbon dioxide emissions were reduced substantially.

On 23 May 1977 the Hon Mr George Gair announced an amalgamation of the present Ministry of Energy Resources, the New Zealand Electricity Department and the Mines Department. Hopefully it will prove to be the solution of many national problems in energy planning and policy making, in energy distribution and use, and energy discovery and production. The name of this new giant is the Ministry of Energy which gives a firm indication of its future direction. For those amongst us involved with mineral energy resources the establishment of this new department must be encouraging. For those amongst us who are involved in non-energy side of the mineral industry it is the very opposite. The loss of the Mines Department a year short of its centenary is a loss for the mineral industry without a doubt - but how much of a loss?

Metropolitan Colliery has some areas of roof where immedi- ate support is required in development. The disadvantages of percussive roof bolting at the face have led to recent produc- tion trials with rotary boring and rapid=setting resin anchored roof bolts developed at the Colliery. The three innovations involved are: (1) the wet drilling of small holes with an all- hydraulic, portable rotary boring machine; (2) the rapidity of loading a "point anchored" resin bolt; and (3) the consistently high anchorage strength available. All three innovations provide striking advantages over the previously available alternatives. The greatest disad- vantage - that of cost of resin - is not prohibitive, and there is promise of improvement in the future. There are possibilities of variations of the techniques for special support problems in particularly difficult roofs.

Barra Bonita reservoir, located in the Sao Paulo State, Brazil, has been mainly used for local navigation and electricity generation to supply a prosper region in the country. Sand mining activities in that area have an important social and economic meaning for the local community. In this reservoir there are several sand mines that produce around 45 000 m3 of sand a month. These deposits were rich in material used as concrete aggregate in the civil construction. However, nowadays a significant increase in the demand of gravel can be observed, representing a serious productive problem. This material hasnÆt been well accepted by the market and, through the years, it was disposed at open sky in piles as waste deposits. This deposits have caused environmental problems like visual impact, reduction of free spaces outside and inside the mine, source of material to erosion and sedimentation processes in lower areas, flooding as a result of the filling up process in the drainage system, among others. For a lack of an appropriate technological characterisation, this material have been mainly used to pavement internal and external areas in the mine, with lower cost associated. With the purpose of evaluate the usefulness of this material in the conventional concrete, there were conducted several tests in the disposed residue including petrographical, physical, and chemical characterisation. The petrographical analysis and the preliminary results of the study showed that the material reacts with the alkalis that are present in the conventional cement (CP-II-E-32). In order to make the application technical and economically possible a research was developed seeking forms to correct this characteristic by adding special cements with high pozzolana content. The results of the technological, physical and chemical characterisation of the products indicated the technical viability of the use of that material. The study also allowed projecting environmental improvements resulting in the elimination of the waste piles.
