Geological uncertainty is reduced by improved understanding of the relationship between regional-scale geological basement features (structure, composition, depth) and known local structural risk (such as recognised structural hazards at the mine). Coal mining and exploration entities can be more efficient and effective in managing geological risk at a range of scales. A more efficient and effective performance in forward interpreting and managing geological risk will result in a more efficient and effective exploration and also incremental or even significant mining cost improvements. In order to improve the understanding of basement features, a new 4D regional structural/basin framework for the Sydney Basin and the eastern part of the Gunnedah Basin has been constructed to provide primarily coal exploration and mining with a more integrated geological framework for ongoing subregional to mine-scale geological risk based studies. The model has been developed from a range of available regional geophysical and geological datasets, of variable detail and reliability, which have been brought together to generate a more robust structural and tectonic model than could be generated with any one single dataset. An initial regional structural model for the Sydney Basin was constructed in 2003 and an update to the model was released in 2005 (SRK Consulting, 2003; 2005). The development and ongoing refinement of the model was undertaken with financial and data support from a number of coal mining industry, gas exploration and government organisations. Prior to, and following the development of the regional structural/basin model and associated Information Base, a number of more area-specific studies have been completed, using the æbasement upÆ assessment approach. The methodology for developing comprehensive structural models, from the basement up, is outlined. The approach can be applied at a country-wide, regional or lease area scale. Case examples of where this approach has been used as an effective and efficient method in improving geological certainty and as a predictive tool to help manage geological risk are also presented.

After a methane explosion in a coal mine a pre-determined crisis management procedure is instigated. As the process rapidly evolves the inevitable question arises - are personnel trapped underground, are they alive and can they be rescued without putting the lives of the rescue crew at risk? This is a very emotive question with many sub-questions such as; could anybody have survived, is there the potential for a secondary explosion and is there a `window of opportunity' before that secondary explosion occurs?To determine if that window of opportunity exists two fundamental elements must be in place; a method of determining the atmosphere at key points in the mine and a method of predicting the course of change of that atmosphere with respect to time. The first element can be achieved if the tube bundle system is intact and drawing samples from known points, alternatively boreholes can be drilled from the surface. The second element can be realised by utilising a sequence of computer generated control charts which have a time axis, a percentage combustibles axis, the upper and lower explosive limits of the current atmosphere and a prediction option which allows the user to look at the potential changes in the atmosphere over a set period of time. These control charts would be part of the mines on-going crisis management system rather than a tool to be used after an explosion had occurred.

Secondary microplaty haematite in its variety of styles and generations is the defining component of the high-grade banded iron-formation (BIF)-hosted iron ores of the world that are dominated by martite (M; - haematite pseudomorphs after magnetite). The term microplaty haematite (mplH) was introduced during the CSIRO-AMIRA 1976-1994 iron ore program, and was used to differentiate the then main export martite-microplaty haematite (M-mpl H) ore types of Tom Price-Whaleback and Paraburdoo (Paleoproterozoic), from the newly exploited, more prolific supergene martite-goethite (M-G) ores (Mesozoic-Paleocene) of the Hamersley Province that are now the major Hamersley iron ore exports.Morris (1980, 1985) suggested that the most important genetic factor that distinguishes the two main ore types was regional metamorphism of Paleoproterozoic M-G ores at temperatures normally related to diagenesis (ca 80 - 100°C). As temperatures increased, mplH grew in goethite both spontaneously as well as by nucleating on martite and other pre-existing haematite. Because the conversion of goethite to haematite involves a ~27 per cent reduction in volume, the crystals probably grew within microvoids of their own creation, with iron transfer through water resulting from the process itself, a local hydrothermal process requiring no introduced hypogene fluids.Barley et al (1999) and Taylor et al (2001) concluded instead that oxidation of introduced siderite in hydrothermally metasomatised BIF ‘protore’ resulted in mplH + ankerite by reaction with heated meteoric fl uids. This postulated ‘protore’, still preserved locally at Mt Tom Price, was described during the CSIRO-AMIRA program as local post-ore BIF metasomatic residuals. These new hypogene-meteoric concepts for M-mpl H genesis have formed the basis for a range of varying local and international models that currently dominate the literature of iron ore.No valid petrographic data supporting the hypogene-supergene modelling was found but petrographic images of goethite-related mplH growth in a range of different environments are shown.

Mining has played a significant role in human development and without the mining sector, society would not enjoy a large number of the benefits that it does today. However, mining has also carried with it some important lessons, which remain the source of ongoing learning. One of these lessons is the poor closure or abandonment of mines, worldwide. This has in many cases resulted in large tracts of unproductive land, representing a source of environmental pollution and a safety hazard to the community. Frequently associated with this is a legacy of mining communities having fallen into economic and social decline, beyond mine closure.Due to this legacy, governments, society and the mining sector pay far greater attention to mine closure planning today, than was done in the past. Typically closure planning has focused on the engineering aspects of a mine, namely decommissioning of the workings and plant; dismantling of unusable infrastructure; and rehabilitation of disturbed land. These are important aspects of closure but a more holistic, long-term approach is required which encompasses environmental and social aspects and aims to leave a positive legacy behind.In planning for a mine closure scenario with a lasting positive legacy, it is critical that the broader receiving environments (social, economic, physical and biological) within which a mine is located, define and drive the closure plan and the mine planning as a whole. This ensures that the broader environment influences mine closure, as opposed to looking at how a closed mine will impact on the environment. The ultimate aim is to first understand the broader environment and then to fit the closure of a mine into it. The earlier this approach is followed in the life of a mine, the greater the operational time frame available, and hence a better chance is presented for planning and managing a mine towards the desired, tested and agreed post closure scenario. Within this broad context, there is tremendous scope to achieve successful mine closure. However, it is critical to note that mine closure is not the sole responsibility of the mining companies, and neither is it possible for said mining companies to achieve mining closure alone. This concerted effort requires a multi-stakeholder approach in which partnerships are created and risks, responsibilities and opportunities are shared and managed. To achieve sustainable closure, a multi-stakeholder approach based on an initial forward-looking closure vision is required. This approach provides an early basis for consideration of alternative land uses and economic options from which specific actions to achieve the preferred option can be defined. The Anglo American plc Mine Closure Toolbox has been formulated and developed around this concept. The Toolbox aims to expand mine closure planning - from financial provisioning for rehabilitation and physical closure, to planning for sustainability beyond mine closure and leaving behind a positive legacy.This paper focuses on the business case for mine closure planning and provides an overview of the Anglo American plc (AAplc) Mine Closure Toolbox.CITATION:Botha, P R, 2012. The results of a few studies carried out in this area are described in Part-I and Part-II in this article. Most developing projects face a range of technical and non-technical challenges, and examination of development histories can potentially provide insights into improved approaches to project development. The Kestanelik project in the Canakkale region of Western Turkey was acquired by Chesser Resources Ltd in 2008. Turkey is a significant and growing source of gold production, with sector participation by both domestic and international companies. While the broad ranges of challenges faced by developing projects is well known, there are relatively few case studies in which the range of technical, environmental, social and governance challenges are presented in a single contribution. Recent studies of undeveloped complex orebodies have particularly shown the extent to which environment, social and governance (ESG) complexities contribute to project delays and failures. The Kestanelik project faced a full range of technical and ESG complexities, and provides an illustrative example of the associated challenges. CITATION: Valenta, R, 2018. The extraction of the values from gold bearing clay or clayey ores has always presented difficulties. A description of the successful operation of a mill working on material of this nature is here given in the hope that it will be of interest to mining engineers and metallurgists, particularly as the ore body referred to has been worked out. The methods finally adopted were evolved at the mill after the failure of 3: plant specially designed in England and sent out to New Guinea to cope with the clay by the old principle of calcining to brick followed by crushing and cyanidation. A description is given of the direct cyanidation of run of mine ore in '90 ton vats; which was finally adopted after a great deal of study and experiment. Mention is also made of the method of removing overburden in the open cut and the mining and transport of the ore from the open cut to the mill. The purpose of the paper is to record these matters while the information is still available. . .DESCRIPTION OF THE ORE BODYThe values occurred in a flat-lying lode which had slipped about half a mile down the mountain side and had come to rest in the nearly horizontal position in which it was found and worked. The thickness of the deposit varied from a maximum of about 25 ft. at the northern end to about 10 ft. at the southern end. The ore body was capped with an overburden of decomposed breccia and porphyry of variable thickness the maximum being about 65 ft. The underlying rock, or the footwaIJ of .the flat ore body was breccia locallyknown as blue breccia.

McLeod: Without getting into the argument as to how well we can know our resource levels specifically in the immediate short term, I would like to make one or two points about the future, and perhaps try and persuade people that they are not really facing a doomsday. It is fair to say that over the last few years the rate at which we have increased our resources has far exceeded the rate at which we have used them, and this is likely to continue for quite a few years yet. As people are now looking for a substitute for petroleum, later on we will be looking for a substitute for coal, should the position get serious. After all man is pretty versatile, has plenty of initiative-and makes allowances for experience. It has been demonstrated here by the way people are looking at use of low quality coals and better use of the coals that are available. It would be fair to say that what now we regard as economically submarginal deposits will, by the time we need them, become economic. I think that there is quite a lot in front of us in exploration and finding new reserves. I would like to have comment from yourself sir, because I recall reading a report of a meeting, here in Wollongong I think it was, in which you addressed the local branch on the future of coal in Australia, and you said that the coal basins of Australia had been well explored and there was not much chance of new discoveries. Since that time we have seen some thousands of millions of tonnes turned up in the Galilee Basin of Queensland, we have seen five hundred million tonnes turned up in Lake Phillipson in South Australia. Do your previous comments still apply? I would like to hear from some of the exploration people, who are operating on an Australia-wide basis, as to how they regard our chances of discovering significant new deposits and significant extensions of known deposits. H,artnell: Mr. McLeod has asked me to comment on what he has just said. I think that the important thing is that our knowledge of the main coal basins in Eastern Australia is increasing in detail but for the most part the extent of coal basins is not being increased in respect of their superficial areas. There are additions but they are not substantially changing our expectation of what the main coal basins will be. I believe that our task is essentially to intensify our knowledge of the main coal basins that we know about. This is important for example for the various reasons that Mr. Roach was talking about, that is the problem of surface alienation, jeopardising the chance of recovery when you go to underground operations. My approach to this whole problem is predicated on the belief that coal has a special destiny to perform in the next fifty years. I believe that it is going to take up to fifty years and maybe a little longer before the enormously demanding technology for nuclear power recovery is in fact achieved. When it is achieved the supply of energy to the world will be enormous, much beyond what we have ever even dreamed about. The mind boggles at what the people of the middle of next century, of two thousand and fifty, will command in the way of physical resources. It is going to be, I believe, tremendous, but the technology involved is very demanding. I mentioned to Mr. McLeod the other day that according to the information that I got in November last, 60% of the nuclear power stations in the United States were out of action, by automatic cut offs because of safety requirements. The technology of breeder reactors seems each year to be a bit further off. In the meantime coal I am sure is going to be called on to supply power directly to fluidised bed and other technologies for power generation. It is going to be called upon in the near future, I believe, to supply liquid fuel on a vast scale and the only thing in my view that we should be thinking about is whether the coal producing countries of the world will succeed in producing as much coal as is going to be demanded. I believe the real challenge to the coal mining industries of the world is that they may fail to do what is going to be demanded of them. This is a challenge I believe to mining technology. I think that we should be working deliberately and energetically finding ways and means where underground recoveries, instead of averaging 50%, can average 50% plus, plus, plus, and this is the first requirement. We should be spending many millions every year, here and overseas, on increasing our means of winning coal because every tonne of coal that is alienated and left irrecoverable in the earth is going to weaken the capacity of the coal mining industry to fulfil, what I believe to be its destiny in the next 50 years.

Ideal iron ore sinter is produced by optimising the balance between coarse (+2 mm), stable ore nuclei and a reactive matrix consisting largely of fluxed -1 mm fines. The authors have previously published work evaluating the matrix melting behaviour of a number of fine ores, using techniques developed by CSIRO. The focus of that work was to demonstrate the contribution of the matrix to overall sinter quality, with the results showing a direct correlation between melting point, matrix porosity and strength. CSIRO has also developed a complementary test to study the behaviour of coarse ore nucleus particles in contact with the sinter matrix and provide an evaluation of their reaction and assimilation properties. This test provides valuable fundamental information that can be used to better understand the role of specific ore types and optimise blend composition.The CSIRO laboratory-scale assimilation test is carried out by embedding particles of ores of specific sizes into a fluxed matrix of known sinter blend composition, using real ores and fluxes, in a laboratory test that directly relates to pot-grate and plant sintering conditions. Samples are fired under controlled conditions in a tube furnace using a standard heating profile and a constant, low-oxygen potential atmosphere. These conditions simulate the actual sintering process while removing the effects of the many locally-variable parameters (eg temperature, oxidation potential and localised chemistry) that exist in the actual process, meaning that trends in behaviour can be more clearly seen. Designed as a compromise between the industry-standard pot-grate sintering test and a more fundamental test using chemical reagents, the aim is to isolate and evaluate the nucleus behaviour of an individual blend component to allow an improved understanding of the role that an individual ore plays in a specific blend. Measured cross-sections of the resulting fired samples provide a semi-quantitative measure of reactivity, while accompanying photomicrographs allow a qualitative assessment of assimilation properties (eg volume and distribution of secondary porosity generated during reaction).In this paper, to complement the previous work published on melting behaviour, nucleus particles were selected from hematite, hematite-goethite and goethite ores and embedded in a simulated plant sinter matrix. Drilled core particles of two sizes were tested at fixed temperatures simulating low- (<1300°C) and high-temperature (>1300°C) sintering conditions. The resulting assimilation properties are compared and discussed as a function of particle size, temperature and ore/sinter mineralogy. Scientific knowledge of Mars’ surface morphology and internal geological structure has been accumulated through satellite imagery and numerical topographic data using remote sensing technology, as well as seismic surveys by the on-site lander. Recent studies show that Marsquakes could be caused by the release of strain energy generated by the contraction of Mars. In particular, Marsquakes occur around the graben where many faults are existed and formed regularly spaced patterns. This implies that Marsquakes occur when the stress field of the Martian crust is an extension condition, and normal faults appear on the surface. We focus on the linear relationship between the fault spacing and the thickness of the mechanical layer as an approach to studying the internal structure from satellite images. Mechanical layer is a layer that composes of the same mechanical properties and is mainly bounded by lithology (Narr, 1991; Gross, 1993). The linear relationship between the thickness of the mechanical layer and the joint spacing has been studied and its slope is called the Fracture-Spacing Index (FSI) (Narr and Suppe, 1991). Soliva, Benedicto and Maerten (2006) showed that the stress drop zone (stress shadow) due to the fault activities affects the fault spacing. Figure 1 shows the approach used to estimate the thickness of the mechanical layer from the fault spacing on Mars. This paper aims to better understand the internal mechanical structure of Mars estimated by the geometrical pattern of faults on the Martian surface. We report the initial studies of this work. The lab-scale physical experiments and numerical experiments were presented to demonstrate the relationship between the thickness of the mechanical layer and the geometric pattern of fractures

Geometallurgical modelling is increasingly being incorporated into mineral resource modelling and estimation as a means of increasing efficiency, decreasing operating costs and reducing risk in mining operations. Traditional geostatistical workflows for geometallurgical modelling face several difficulties, in particular, related to the non-additivity of process response variables, to highly heterotopic data sets and/or to preferential sampling designs, all of which may explain why most attempts to estimate geometallurgical response variables from assay data and mineralogy are still based on statistics and machine learning. The aim of the work presented here is to demonstrate the applicability of geostatistics to estimate copper recovery from copper sulfide ores at the Prominent Hill Iron Oxide Copper-Gold (IOCG) deposit in Australia. As recovery is non-additive, the preferred workflow is the joint estimation of the masses of metal in the feed and in the concentrate, both of which are additive variables. While the mass of metal in the feed can be estimated from abundant online assay analyses, the mass of metal in the concentrate can only be estimated from a very limited number of laboratory-scale batch flotation tests. Traditional approaches to estimating the masses of metal in the feed and in the concentrate, such as simple and ordinary co-kriging, are described and discussed. A modified version of co-kriging is introduced, which incorporates linear relationships between the mean values of the input variables, in addition to a spatial correlation model. Co-kriging with related means is shown to outperform traditional simple and ordinary co-kriging in terms of precision, accuracy and consistency of the estimates, and offers a practical and efficient tool to deal with highly heterotopic and preferential sampling designs.

The future of any mining company depends on maintaining and growing its access to high-quality mineral resources. Often the true size of a given resource is not fully recognised until after mining has commenced. Also, the strong desire to increase production puts pressure to expand the resource base of the mine to get maximum value out of the capital employed. This, plus diminishing M&A opportunities and declining world-class greenfield discovery rates, makes brownfields exploration a high priority activity in any operating company. For the success and long-term survival of the company it is critical that this is done well. The primary aim of brownfields exploration is to find or acquire new deposits within economic transport distance of an existing mine that will add materially to shareholder value through: mine or capacity expansion, displacement of lower-margin ore from the mine plan, preserving and extending the mine life, and ensuring potential value is understood in order to maximise potential future mine development or exit. A number of strategic principles are important in any program designed to achieve these aims: understanding the life of mine (LOM) production profile and the related key drivers for exploration, understanding the dynamic nature of the brownfields search space, understanding and measuring depletion of the brownfields search space, understanding the potential of the near-mine region, investing in exploration technology to expand the search space, and investing in a basic geological understanding of the ore-environment. Examination of the LOM profile will highlight critical issues facing development plans for the mine including future grade and throughput issues, key technology requirements or innovations and scenarios for increased production. Exploration targets in the brownfields program should address these key issues. Often it is as æsimpleÆ as keeping mine development sufficiently far ahead of extraction to allow time for the various phases of exploration and resource assessment drilling. Because of the low additional capital costs required, expansion of the brownfields search space is strongly leveraged to: metal prices, development of new markets, incremental operating cost reductions, strategic changes in downstream requirements in integrated businesses, depletion of higher unit-value ores, and new technologies (both extraction and exploration). Therefore the brownfields search space is likely to incrementally expand through time and must be regularly reviewed. This is also important as any given search space will be progressively exhausted, resulting in smaller and higher cost discoveries. It is therefore important to monitor and critically review sustained trends of increasing brownfields discovery cost. The first wave of discoveries in any camp are usually empirically driven and do not need a strong geological understanding. However, an improved geological understanding is critical to making the next generation of hidden discoveries. To illustrate these points, a case study was carried out on the exploration and development history of the Kambalda nickel camp. Over a period of 40 years, more than 40 deposits were found containing over 1.7 million tonnes of nickel metal. Efficient mines need to maintain reserves for operating flexibility. Consequently, the company needs to clearly understand the global resource in order to maximise its full potential. In addition, understanding the full brownfields potential earlier in the development of a deposit rather than later, creates optionality through the flexibility that this understanding brings to future development choices. To ensure best practice in attaining this aim, the roles and responsibilities of the exploration team and the mine operation should be clearly understood. It is important for the explorers and the operators to have shared views about what needs to be done. Typically, mine operators would be accountable for identifying future resource requirements to support the life-of-mine production schedule whilst explorers would be accountable to ensure best-practice assessment of brownfields exploration opportunities. This would include an assessment of the global undiscovered endowment in the regional near-mine area. The balance between brownfield exploration drilling and resources to reserve conversion will need to be decided to ensure efficient operations are maintained. Both need to agree the optimum level of brownfields funding taking into account: urgency to replace or grow reserves, and quality of opportunities (relative to those elsewhere). The ultimate cost of ignoring the full brownfields potential of an operating asset can be significant, ranging from inefficient and poorly planned operations, lost opportunity cost and resultant value through under-utilised resources and, in the worst case, early exit from the asset at the bottom of the commodity cycle û leaving behind huge amounts of shareholder value.

ISP (Imperial Smelting Process) produces zinc and lead simultaneously from zinc and lead sulphide concentrates and recovers copper and precious metals into a lead bullion. The strength of sinter is important to keep permeability in the shaft of the Imperial Smleting Furnace. The residual sulphur content of the sinter is also important as it causes metal losses into slag. The paper describes an investigation into the sintering operations to improve sulphur elimination and sinter strength. The micro structure of the sinter and the effect of the blast rate, sintering temperature etc have been studied.

Western Deep Levels, a seismically active deep level told mine. stalled placing backfill in their narrow tabular workings as part of the regional support strategy in 1986. Over the years the percentage of working places being backfilled has been gradually increasing. At the end of 1995 the support efficiency and the labour productiveness relating to support installation were scrutinised to determine if resources were being optimised. Owing to financial, safety and productivity constraints it was decided to redesign stope support to be less labour intensive, safer and provide an integrated stope support system. This new integrated system will thus combine the previously used temporary, permanent and back area support consisting of mechanical props, hydraulic props and backfill respectively. Backfill previously formed an integral part of the regional support in conjunction with strike stabilising pillars. To design the integrated support system the backfill placement quality has to be exceptionally good and placement must be done as close as possible to the working face. The backfill to face distance was reduced by 30 per cent and in some areas by more than 50 per cent with an increase of square metres filled to increase the effect of the backfill even more. The broad biodiversity of our country is manifested through several different biological forms. From the villages of Portovelo and San Gerardo in the southern part of Ecuador, some samples of water and rocks were taken in order to identify the native micro-organisms which take part in the natural processes of leaching of sulfurous minerals. The presence of Spp Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was determined together with a fungi sample which has not yet been characterised by the current workers. These have been isolated, grown, experimented and conserved in appropriate cryogenic environments. The present research intends to study the individual and group adaptation of the bacteria and the fungi upon suitable systems of agitation and ventilation, in combination with several different concentrations of refractory auriferous samples. These refractory samples were derived from old mine workings and the experiments were performed to test the effectiveness of the isolated species in bioleaching as pre-treatments upon the cyaniding processes. The capability of these bacteria to develop in environments with high concentrations of cyanide has also been studied, to investigate the possible use of bacteria in the biodegradation of cyanide. The presence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in acid conditions has already been tested in advance, however, the presence of fungi species in these conditions are studied to prove their efficiency as another alternative for the bioleaching of refractory auriferous minerals and Baptista, 1998).

The appraisal of mineral reserves by a lender is carried out at the initial stages in developing a loan for a mine. The depth of investigations is influenced by the competence of the explorer, the type of commodity and knowledge of the geological environment. The lender looks for a reserve life which exceeds the term of the loan plus contingencies for events such as cost over-runs, adverse markets and production difficulties. The physical features of importance are discussed. Factors with direct financial implications are considered for their incorp- oration in sensitivity analyses to allow risk appraisal. When satisfied, the lender can then proceed to review cash flow forecasts, the basic strength of the project, then determine with the borrower the components and alternat- ives of a loan package.

The optical basicity (A, Pb2+ as probe ion) of various oxide glass systems has been measured to establish the new basicity scale of slag melts. Best conditions of glassy fragments to measure A were as follow, (1) 1 ti 4 x 10-2 wt% Pb content, (2) 0.2 mm in thickness, (ii) enough annealing (about 10 hr) at a temperature 200¦C below Tg., and (4) polishing a surface well. the variation of A with composition was correlated to that of relative oxygen activity of slag melts. The estimation of basicity of slag melts from it could be valid. The A of opaque and coloured quenched slags could not be measured. An approximately linear relationship, however, exsisted between the isomer shifts (b) of Fe3+ ion in slag derived from the Mossbauer effect and A. Therefore, -4 of various metallurgical slag could be estimated from this relationship. These results can be expected to establish the new basicity scale of slag melts as the Louis basicity.

For many years Isa Mine has seen the need for a continuous mining machine which will economically cut hard rock. Tunnel borers are unsuitable due to the size and inflexibility of the machine and the shape of excavation mined. The design of roadheader type machines will not permit the use of the necessary cutting technology. in 1983 a joint project was undertaken by The Robbins Company and Mount Isa Mines Limited to develop and to trial a machine suitable for cutting hard rock in an operating mine. The project was based on the proven technology of raiseboring applied to horizontal development. The Mobile Miner was fabricated and trialled in a disused quarry in the U.S.A. during early 1984. Following these trials, the machine was transported to Mount Isa and commenced mining in September that year. The initial duty was to continue the development of a decline commenced by conventional mining for a conveyor system to serve the deeper southern areas of the 1100 copper orebody. This system will permit direct tipping of copper ore to a new crusher complex and conveying of the - crushed ore approximately 2 kilometres to the central hoisting shaft facilities. The Robbins Mobile Miner MM120-3001 uses a vertical rotating cutting wheel mounted on a horizontal swinging boom to excavate a nominally rectangular shaped heading. The cuttings are collected on an apron and conveyed back through the machine. The resulting excavation is smooth-walled with no blasting damage to the surrounding rock. This provides a safer working environment than does conventional drill and blast development mining. Ground support requirements are considerably reduced.

RACE Quartz-calcite veins containing Au, As, W, Cu, Pb, Zn and Fe cross-cut Alpine Fault- related structures in the Alpine Schist of South Island, New Zealand. These veins, and some other related veins have been deposited by metamorphic fluids at 250¦C to >320¦C at pressures of a few hundred bars. The fluids were very variable in composition, with 0 to 50 mole % CO2 and 2 to 18 wt. % NaCl equivalent. Penetration of hot metamorphic fluids to shallow levels in the crust was facilitated by rapid uplift of hot rocks at a compressive plate margin. Fluid immiscibility at shallow levels caused concentration of salts and metals into the aqueous phase. Gold precipitation was caused by reduction by pelitic country rock and/nr dluILion by other aqueous fluids.

Western Deep Levels, a seismically active deep level gold mine, started placing backfill in their narrow tabular workings as part of the regional support strategy in 1986. Over the years the percentage of working places being backfilled has been gradually increasing. At the end of 1995 the support efficiency and the labour productiveness relating to support installation were scrutinised to determine if resources were being optimised. Owing to financial, safety and productivity constraints it was decided to redesign stope support to be less labour intensive, safer and provide an integrated stope support system. This new integrated system will thus combine the previously used temporary, permanent and back area support consisting of mechanical props, hydraulic props and backfill respectively. Backfill previously formed an integral part of the regional support in conjunction with strike stabilising pillars. To design the integrated support system the backfill placement quality has to be exceptionally good and placement must be done as close as possible to the working face. The backfill to face distance was reduced by 30 per cent and in some areas by more than 50 per cent with an increase of square metres filled to increase the effect of the backfill even more. This paper addresses the design and successful implementation of an integrated stope support system based on the optimisation of backfill to the extent where installation of mechanical and hydraulic jacks could be eliminated.
