At Ohio Creek, 3 km northwest of the Thames bonanza goldfield, porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation is hosted in a dacite porphyry associated with porphyry intrusion breccias and overlying andesites and dacites. The geological setting is a Jurassic greywacke basement overlain by Late Miocene andesite-dacite volcanics which are extensively altered to propylitic and argillic assemblages. Diamond drilling at Ohio Creek in 1978-1981 by Amoco Minerals intersected low grade Cu-Au (0.12-0.20% C~ 0.23-0.4 glt Au) mineralisation An advanced argillic 'alteration cap containing quartz-alunite¦dickite or pyrophyllite-dickite¦diaspore is centred on the adjacent Lookout Rocks and has potential for high sulfidation Au-Cu mineralisation. There is a zonation from potassic K-feldspar-magnetitealteration at depth in the dacite porphyry, through an overlying phyllic quartzsericite- pyrite zone which is overprinted by pyrophyllite in the overlying advanced argillic cap. Early quartz stockwork veinlets associated with the potassic alteration contain fluid inclusions that trapped a highly saline (50-80 wt% NaCI equiv) fluid at high temperatures (450 to >600¦C) indicative of a magmatic fluid. Some chalcopyrite is associated with slightly later quartz-magnetite veinlets, but the bulk of the copper occurs as disseminated chalcopyrite associated with the phyllic alteration. The potassic alteration is surrounded and overprinted by propylitic chlorite¦epidote alteration. Late polymetallic sulfide-quartz-anhydrite veins occur within and around the margins of the porphyry system as in the Kaiser Reef. Fluid inclusions associated with these late veins were formed at temperatures of about 250-320¦C from low salinity (1-3 wfl~ NaCI equiv) fluids. The spatial association between porphyry eu-Au mineralisation, advanced argillic alteration and polymetallic sulfide veins suggests that they are genetically part of the same hydrothennal system. This is consistent with reconnaissanceK-Ar dates of 11.6-10.7 Ma for the intrusive porphyry at Ohio Creek, alunite in the advanced argillic alteration zone at Lookout Rocks and sericite selvedges from the Waiotahi gold-quartz veins at Thames.

Cooling tower design has not advanced significantly in the last decade. Recognising this, Outotec has developed an innovative horizontal outflow cooling tower with increased performance compared to conventional design cooling towers.Outotec® Cooling Towers operate today in applications such as spent electrolyte cooling in zinc plants and for gypsum removal before copper solvent extraction. In such applications the use of this latest design has enabled increased production and lower maintenance costs in the downstream operations.In actual operations, the cooling performance has been confirmed at start-up, and has demonstrated that the towers operate in accordance with the CFD modelling. In the last three years these towers have proven themselves in commercial operation to operate with high efficiency and availability.This case study will outline comparative data, collected over two years at a site where both Outotec and conventional cooling towers are operating. The data shows that Outotec cooling towers require less than half the maintenance time of conventional cooling towers, when adjusted to a total solution flow basis. A close partnership approach with the site has allowed continual development, ensuring high availability and high performance.Experience with previous cooling tower installations guided the development of maintenance philosophies and procedures; this resulted in a design where maintenance intensive components were accessible from the top of the cooling tower. The Resource Management Act 1991 represented an innovative and unique piece of planning and environmental legislation when it was introduced. Since the Act was passed into law in 1991 it has been subject to nine amendments, many of which were of the ætinkerÆ variety. These amendments recognise that the Act has not been as successful in providing the æone-stop shopÆ for resource users that the Act was hoped to be. The latest and most significant attempt at changing the Act was the Resource Management Amendment Act 2003. The amendments made by the Amendment Act have proved to be largely unsuccessful in achieving any significant changes to the way resources are managed in New Zealand, and have failed to address many of the concerns which drove the original Resource Management Amendment Bill in 1999. The recent decision to discontinue further investment in Project Aqua has once again placed the Act in the spotlight as a significant hand-brake on major projects. This particular event has led to yet another review to be undertaken this year. The review will focus on five key areas:   1.   achieving the right balance of national and local interests; 2.   improving the design and process for local policy formulation; 3.   improving the consent decision making process; 4.   allocation of natural resources (water, air and geothermal); and 5.   supporting measures for building capacity and promoting best practice and implementation at the local authority level.  It is important for the business community and the mining industry in particular to seize the opportunity that this review provides to make sure that any amendments undertaken as a result of the review achieve the aims listed above. The review needs to be considered in light of the current regime for the management of natural resources in New Zealand. In addition to the Resource Management Act 1991, the Crown Minerals Act 1991 and the Building Act 1991, which form the core resource statutes in New Zealand, there have been other developments affecting the regime. Special legislation over and above the Resource Management Act 1991 has been enacted to protect the Hauraki Gulf and special legislation is currently being considered to protect the Waitakere Ranges in Auckland. In the Hauraki District mining is prohibited in some areas and a plan change mechanism is specified as the appropriate tool to use in the event a mineral resource is to be developed in those areas. The current review is a further opportunity to remedy the inadequacies of the Act.

This evening I would like to speak about men for the mineral industry.It is trite to say that the mining industry is expanding rapidly and that technically trained men are in short supply. How short is difficult to assess and impossible to quantify.The industry has been traditionally managed by technically trained men experienced in the ways of their fellow men. Let us start with the assumption that men with this training and experience are essential to management of mining and metallurgical enterprises.I suggest that we do this as it avoids argument with those who are beginning to suggest that such men are not so important as they used to be; who are suggesting that the latest sophisticated business management schools can produce managers who can straight out of school join the upper echelons of an organization and successfully manage it by the use of modern systems and techniques without the need to rub shoulders with men of all callings and get their hands dirty in the process.This kind of thinking brings to mind the modern cargo ship which is equipped with all the latest gadgets of science. It can find its way from Sydney to Auckland with no one in the engine room and the man on the bridge spending most of his time writing to his wife or reading the latest novel.How often do we read of this ship being tied up in Sydney because the crew sympathizes with the cook who has been slighted by some uncomplimentary remark about his toheroa soup? Here is a pieceof sophisticated machinery stopped through no technical fault, but held up by the whim of man. The understanding of man by man can spell the success or failure of any endeavour. A single man can leadan organization to the pinnacles of success, or doom it to utter failure in spite of modern systems and techniques.So let us start from the point that people matter.Through the years our Institute has been fortunate in having many members who have felt strongly...

Despite the importance and usefulness of basicity in metallurgical slags, the optimum quantitative expression of it has remained elusive, partly due to the fact that the precise concept of basicity has not been properly clarified. The two basic approaches to the concept of basicity are the Lux-Flood, which perceives basicity in terms of the activity of the free oxide ion, a O2- , and the Lewis, which perceives basicity in terms of the ability to donate negative charge. The former has been almost universally adopted in the area of metallurgical slags, while the latter has been increasingly accepted in the field of glass chemistry. In this paper, some difficulties of the Lux-Flood approach are pointed out, including the need for indirect measures of a O2- , which have proliferated in recent years. Accordingly, it is suggested that the Lewis approach has a good deal to commend it, and that the quantification of it in terms of optical basicity is the best measure of basicity available, which should therefore be more widely applied in metallurgical slags than it currently is. The fact that there are intrinsic problems in evaluating the optical basicities for the transition metal oxides is acknowledged, and a new scale is recommended. The patterns of iso-optical basicity lines in ternary systems are shown to agree well with the pattern of iso-activity and iso-capacity lines under appropriate conditions. * Originally published in the Proceedings of MINPREX 2000, published by The AusIMM.

Mineragraphy is a coined term to signify the field of microscopic investigation of ore minerals. The term is not euphonius and is sometimes regarded as superfluous because the subject is no more than an enlargement of the scope of petrology. In the past the practical field of petrology has been largely limited by the instruments which were designed for the study of rocks and' the microscopical properties of the transparent minerals. The addition of mineragraphy has been brought about by the use of the reflecting microscope and a totally different technique.The use of the petrological microscope, as it has been employed in the training oi geologists and mining engineers for nearly half a century, has been justified many times, not only in its application to general geological problems, but also in the more restricted field of the exploration and examination of ore deposits. It provides information of the gangue minerals and rocks associated with an ore body which is of great value in some mining fields. In cases where ore deposits occur selectively in certain favourable types of rock, the recognition and delineation of these rock types is a useful guide in prospecting. The Boulder Belt at Kalgoorlie forms one of the most striking examples in Australia where important significance is attached to different rock types, and the petrological microscope is essential to their elucidation.

The recent paper by Dr. Edwards upon the copper deposits of Australia furnishes a perspective upon that portion of the Commonwealth's mineral deposits which is the more welcome because it has been long overdue. The paper yields in compressed form and in handy arrangement for reference the more relevant data to end of 1938 for all of Australia's important copper deposits 'past"and. present, and for many of the lesser ones. The information supplied 'obviously' has 15een collected' painstakingly and compiled with discrimination.Such published surveys of a national character have been far too few.The Mineral Resources Survey branch of the Department of Supply and Shipping at Canberra has been engaged for several years upon comprehensive compilations of data concerning each of the more important minerals used in industry. Presumably the results will be published after the war. The group will constitute an impressive and valuable series.As yet the work has not been completed, and, for security reasons, much of that which has been finalized is not publicly available. This makes the paper by Dr. Edwards the more timely.In the compilation of data by those not acquainted at first hand with many of the districts involved it is inevitable that, from reading of the literature alone, certain misconceptions will arise relationships become confused; and some of the more recently acquired information unavoidably fail to be taken into account. One need only compare his own impressions of a district, gained from reading the published literature prior to inspection, with the impressions later arrived at following a visit, to realize the difficulties in appraising the various features,in their proper relationships.On the whole, Dr. Edwards has, kept such misinterpretations at a minimum, which is a tribute to the care he must have exercised in analysing the vast fund of data perused. A few errors of statement, mainly concerning, Queensland deposits, have been noted. The Newmont Tanami Operations (NTO), formerly the Granites Gold Mine, commenced operation in the mid-1980s with tailings deposition evolving over the past three decades as production has increased and the operation has expanded. Paddock-style tailings storage facilities (TSFs) and in-pit tailings deposition have fulfilled the tailings requirements for NTO over its lifetime with the technical specifications of these facilities improving over time in line with the positive development of standards, guidelines and best practice.This paper reviews the options for tailings storage facilities at NTO and the many considerations that have been analysed and deliberated upon before settling on specific TSF types and designs. It also explains the operating philosophies of the tailings deposition and how the facilities have always strongly maintained the optimum capture and retrieval of water. The current TSF design and criteria is presented, along with the introduction of dry tails harvesting for use in paste production as a backfill product for the underground mine. Iron ore is normally sold in bulk at certain specifications. These include iron grade and specific contaminant grades, typically silica, alumina, phosphorous and sulfur. These target grades are normally agreed between the mining company (producer) and the steelmaking company (customer).This study presents an alternative to traditional cut-off grade calculation, using linear programming that maximises the total ore inventories within a predefined mining envelope while meeting the specified targets. Providing a feasible mining sequence that maintains the target grade is not covered in this study.The method was applied to Fortescue’s operations. The complexity arising from differing ore quality within each mining horizon, variable yields and upgrades and the need to control iron and contaminant grades provided a good opportunity to test an alternative method of ore selection. The new method significantly reduced the time spent in cut-off selection and sensitivity analysis, and provided an optimised solution.CITATION:Aros, M and Reilly, L, 2014. TowerMill - Advantages in Wet Grinding Applications The TowerMill, which has now been in existence for no less than 50 years, is one alternative to the horizontal ball mill and offers several advantages. The TowerMill is widely used in (coal-fired) electric power plants for the grinding of raw material for the FGD (Flue Gas Desulphurisation) process involving very high throughputs, very fine product sizes and high availability. Some companies in the mining industry also looked at the use of such optimised grinding machines several years ago and found that many of the advantages offered in other industries are transferable to new applications. Much development work has been undertaken to improve the TowerMill for new applications and, as part of that work, tests have also been conducted to make direct comparisons of their performance with that of ball mills. Grinding tests were performed using the same raw materials and comparable machine sizes. Some of the results are discussed in this paper, along with a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages. The conclusion provides an outlook for some worthwhile future applications. The test results, which are described and analysed, show that the TowerMill offers significant advantages in relation to operating costs and operational safety. An example based on the wet grinding of limestone is presented.

The Tui Mine is an abandoned Pb-Zn mine giving rise to water quality problems in the Te Aroha region of Coromandel, New Zealand. When sampled in September 2002, for example, both the Tui and Tunakohoia Streams draining the mine site exceeded ANZECC (2000) water quality guidelines for aquatic life protection (Cu, Cd and Zn) and recreational quality (Cd). Based on trace metal mass flux (kg/yr) from parts of the mine site, the principal pathways by which Cu, Zn and Cd contamination reach these streams have been identified as:the tailings dam leachate,the diverted stream water from above the dam,the drainage from Adit 5 (which accounts for 95 % of Zn and Cd contamination in Tunakohoia Stream), andto a lesser extent, run-off from waste rock piles below Adit 4 level. Of the various remediation options, which have been proposed for the site, the following are identified as providing the best protection for the Tui and Tunakohoia streams:stabilising the tailings dam embankment and capping the embankment and tailings,constructing and/or cleaning out engineered diversion drains around the perimeter of the tailings dam to divert surface water away from the tailings dam, andinstalling bulkheads within Adit 5. A formal postal survey of the people of Te Aroha (66 respondents from 230 surveys) indicated that their priority was that the site be made safe for the public to visit, and used for recreation. As soil samples in potential recreational areas of the mine site, significantly exceeded guideline values for Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd and As, soil removal or capping clearly also needs to be part of a remediation plan. Development of the site as a historical/ecotourism area was viewed favourably, as this may encourage more visitors to the Te Aroha area as well as educate local residents.

Pre-concentration of precious metal and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, development and operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. The fluctuations in metal prices expose many mines to risks especially dealing with low and variable ore grades.Pre-concentration, the process of concentrating the valuable metal into a smaller mass yield, effectively results in the introduction of higher feed grades to milling circuits. Gangue Rejection, the removal of lower S.G. waste rock from the circuit not only results in higher downstream grades but also potentially removes harder, non-valuable mineral, providing significant power savings within the circuit. The pre-concentration or ‘gangue rejection’ process offers a number of benefits when considering the treatment of marginal ore deposits, especially if it can be performed at a coarse crush size; these benefits include a reduction of the operating costs and the feed of more metal units to the mill.Gekko Systems has effectively utilized the Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) to pre-concentrate the valuable metal, achieving high primary recoveries into a range of mass yields resulting in upgrade ratios between 2 and 10 times.This paper explores the benefits of pre-concentrating ‘marginal’ ore deposits prior to the milling circuit; the selective rejection of ore types that may affect either the recovery or comminution process, and also looks into the potential to effectively reduce the ‘cut-off’ grade when considering the mine planning process. Detailed pit and outcrop mapping of sedimentary rocks and their alteration is providing insights into fluvial processes that operated during deposition of the world-class Yandi channel iron deposit. Five prominent rock units are traceable along the strike of the Yandi deposit and permit correlation of open pits and mesas. These units are the Eastern Clay Horizon (ECH), granule-pebble conglomerate (GPC), Main Ore Zone (MOZ), Basal Denatured Zone (BDZ), and Basal Conglomerate (BCONG). The upper part of the deposit is characterised by a transition from spheroidal grains with well-defined rims and nuclei to larger, subangular grains with poorly developed rims. The distribution of rock types and sedimentary features such as lateral accretion surfaces, channel scours and fills, graded bedding, cross-bedding, reworked horizons, and slumped strata are common at Yandi and indicate deposition in a fluvial system. Bedding is well preserved despite modification of original grain shapes and textures and introduction of secondary silica and alumina in the upper part of the deposit. The high lithic and clay content of the GPC and ECH possibly reflect changes in source area or a hiatus in deposition of the Marillana Pisolite. The MOZ and the BDZ may be the same depositional unit with the latter recording alteration by groundwater and destruction of primary textures and other sedimentary features. The BCONG is a channel lag deposit reworked during deposition of the MOZ. This interpretation is supported by the dominance of basement-derived lithic clasts, the presence of BCONG clasts, the variable thickness of the unit along strike and the presence of BCONG clasts in the BDZ.

There are available today many various types of mixing systems, tank types and process liquors confronting the process designer of gold adsorption circuits. This short paper is to give the process designer an insight into the special mixing requirements for resin-in-leach and resin-in-pulp, plus the advantages and disadvantages of the various mixing systems that are available to agitate the required tank shapes. An understanding of the latest developments in this important process area of gold production is addressed and information given on the results of resin degradation in various tank sizes over long periods of mechanical agitation.

"The IsaMill™ was originally developed to address liberation issues at Mount Isa Mines (now Glencore) operations, McArthur River and Mount Isa in the early 1990s. Following on from the industrial success at those operations, the IsaMill™ was commercialised. In the year 2000, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) became the first external user of the technology with a 1.1 MW M3000 IsaMill™ installed to supplement the roaster capacity at its Gidji Processing Plant. The IsaMill™ was used to ultra-fine grind about 10 t/h of pyrite flotation concentrate to 10–12 µm prior to gold cyanide leaching. Based on the success of the Gidji installation, another was installed at the processing plant at KCGM’s Fimiston operation in 2002 in a similar duty.In 2014, a 3 MW M10 000 IsaMill™ was selected to replace the roasters at Gidji as part of the A$98 M emissions reduction project. The mill was commissioned in April 2015 at the design 30 t/h, allowing the immediate shutdown of the two roasters. Replacement of roasting with ultra-fine grinding completely eliminated air emissions at Gidji while maintaining overall plant production rates.This paper details the history of the IsaMill™ at KCGM from the original M3000 to the latest M10 000. Failure of rock materials is a process of crack propagation. Crack initiation takes place when the crack tip stress intensity K reaches a critical value called fracture toughness, K1C. The rock fracture toughness is known to be affected by the surrounding environment such as temperature, confining pressure and humidity. In order to examine the effect of humidity, a series of semi-circular bend tests were performed under various water vapour pressures in a rock material that is known to be anisotropic. Water vapour promotes stress corrosion of rock and therefore the fracture toughness was found to have a decreasing trend with increasing water vapour pressure. The rate of decreasing the fracture toughness depends on the microcrack density that promotes the migration of water vapour into the rock. Also in an anisotropic rock, the fracture toughness depends on the direction of crack in relation to the anisotropy of the rock material.

A mineral grain finder is described which is easily constructed to fit onto the stage of a standard reflected light ore microscope.The device is most useful in relocating particular grains or mineral associations on 30 mm diameter polished sections. The use of the grain finder in the teaching of ore microscopy is outlined.

The ready solubility of gold in dilute aqueous solutions of the cyanides of the alkalies or alkaline earths provides a convenient method for the separation of the precious metal -from the large surplus of associated materia1. The finely ground ore is pulped with a weak solution of cyanide, agitated to dissolve the gold, filtered and washed. The lowgrade filtrate is then clarified and the gold precipitated by some electronegative agent, the most usual being finely divided zinc or zinc dust. The slight precipitate is collectedon some form of filter coated with a filter aid, the filter cake being then known as "gold slime".A typical analysis of this slime is given in Table 1.

These include: The solving of many complex sampling optimisation problems with the simple approach of the worst case policy (WCP). A simple approach to single-stage sampling problems will be mentioned at continuation.
