The disposal of tailings has become a greater issue due to the changing economics of mineral extraction. The processing of lower grade deposits and tougher environmental regulations has led to the selection process for tailings disposal options becoming more complicated. Current selection methods are too time consuming or too easily manipulated for inexperienced users to use successfully. This paper examines a different method for the initial selection of a tailings disposal system, using a numerical system that was introduced into the mining method selection field. The numerical method system was compiled by reviewing previous work done on the positive and negative aspects of the tailings disposal methods used by the coal and metallurgical mining industries. Assessing the common trends and design aspects of each of the methods was undertaken and a ranking was designed to explain how well suited the tailings disposal methods are to a situation. The tool successfully analysed sites using common data to indicate methods for disposal that would have provided minimal technical problems, low environmental risk and been practically possible. The tool also proved successful in identifying critical areas that would need further investigation. This new system was tested on some disaster case studies from around the world in order to show that it could have successfully selected a different method for tailings disposal that would have prevented the disaster.

Government established and financed the NZ Steel Investigating Co in 1960. Its investigations showed that a steel industry was feasible and desirable based uponNorth Island titanomagnetite ironsands, and charted a route for its establishment. The initial processing used post-1945 preheating and prereduction developments, but later innovative improvements created what was essentially a new New Zealand technology. Of the North Island titanomagnetite deposits: the small ones at Waipipi were best made available for export; those at Kawhia and Taharoa were too remote for the economic siting of a mill; that at Raglan proved too small; while at Waikato North Head three times the requirement of 50 million tons of concentrate were located in two sand areas averaging 18 per cent titanomagnetite. Economic studies showed that a South Auckland site would be ideal, close to New Zealand's biggest market. The mill site, on a basalt flow at Glenbrook, was located by a half-day's fieldwork - near both the Waikato North Head deposit, and a railhead for bringing in Waikato coal, etc, and taking out steel products.   This development was one of several since World War II which altered significantly the lives and homes of New Zealanders (others were natural gas, oil, geothermal power, epithermal gold, aluminium, opencastable lignite, etc). All had the essential ingredients of the highest government backing, direct or indirect government finance, and first-class New Zealand scientific and engineering skills (eg to create new technologies). Not one such project failed.

Statistical techniques of Box and Jenkins (1976) have been used to assess the existing control schemes and determine the dynamics of flash smelting furnace at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter. Pertinent process variables, such as, oxygen flow, flux flow, matte grade and iron to silica ratio in slag, were considered in the analysis using routine operating data collected over two periods of operation. Results indicate inadequate control of some of the important variables. Dynamic characteristic parameters (dead time and response time) between a set of input and output variables were identified to improve optimisation of the existing thermodynamic model used for flash furnace control.

The key technical theme of ‘orebody knowledge’ has been applied by Rio Tinto in the Pilbara iron ore precinct from 1966, when operations first started there. It forms the basis of present day application, as well as planning for the future.This paper will review how the early towns and mines commenced and how they formed the basis of Rio Tinto’s early operations, on which the Pilbara precinct has been based. A profile of the last decade of Pilbara growth will be highlighted, together with the current integrated network of mines, rail and ports and the next generation of expansions.The paper will specifically describe the Rio Tinto process of significant resource evaluation, including comprehensive drilling programs and the conversion from resource to reserves. It will also describe the overall mine planning process, both from the strategic view, as well as for short-term mine plans.The ability to innovate in resource development will be discussed. This will include not only the technical dimension of changing cut off grades, use of low-grade ores and managing low-grade stockpiling and beneficiation, but also the broader application of new technology and innovation in the iron ore business.

The Drummond Basin is a large intracratonic basin which developed in central Queensland during Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous times. It is postulated that the Drummond Basin developed as a foreland basin, to the west of a probable west dipping continental margin volcanic arc and subduction zone. The Drummond Basin sequence has been s,ibdivided into three tectono-sedirnentary cycles. Cycle I forms the base of the sequence and comprises thick sequences of intermediate to felsic volcanics and proximal volcanolithic sediments. The volcanics, particularly in the northeast of the basin, occur in separate sub-basins around what were probably isolated eruptive centres. In contrast, the rocks of Cycle 2 and Cycle 3 have been deposited during episodes of broad, basin wide subsidence. Five major igneous episodes, some of which may be co-magmatic, are recorded in the eastern Drummond Basin and environs between the Late Devonian and the Early Permian. The first and second episodes occurred during the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous and are represented by the volcanics in Cycle 1 and Cycle 3. The third episode involves the intrusion of granitoids of Early Carboniferous age into the Drummond Basin sequence. These occur in the Ukalunda area and are related to gold mineralisation at Ukalunda and Valhalla. Episode four includes the felsic volcanics of the Bulgonunna Volcanics. This episode does not appear to he broadly auriferous but gold mineralisation does occur in possible basal Bulgonunna Volcanics at Mount Coolon. The final episode includes a suite of granitic intrusives which intrude the Bulgonunna Volcanics and which are considered to be co-magmatic with them. These intrusives do not appear to be generally associated with gold mineralisation. Gold mineralisation is widespread in the north- eastern Drummond Basin and environs. It is probable that the gold mineralisation is concentrated in epithermal cells during the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous volcanic cycles. This style of mineralisation appears to be related to tectonic setting in modern analogues.

In most of the literature, the hydrocyclone is viewed as a black box in which only global variables are present and where the equations are obtained by curve fitting. Recently some work has appeared where the Navier Stokes equations are solved numerically in the hydrocyclone geometry. However, in all of these works the air core surface, which has an important influence on the hydrocyclone dynamical behaviour, is modelled as being a cylindrical surface of fixed radius. In this work, we model the surface of the air core as a free-boundary which has to satisfy a jump condition, the Young-Laplace equation, relating the physics to the geometry. Based on this model, we are able to explain, qualitatively, some phenomena that have puzzled research workers in the field for many years, and can show, through the air core behaviour, the influence of material parameters on the performance of the hydrocyclone.

Prospecting ice on the Moon necessitates drilling systems to obtain subsurface samples and measure the composition of ice deposits. Landers and rovers equipped with drilling equipment are essential for analysing ice and subsurface resources located at the Moon’s poles. These devices must be small, lightweight, low-power, highly efficient, and high-performance units to function properly in the extreme conditions of the lunar environment. Researchers have developed a prototype drilling apparatus capable of operating in atmospheric and cold environments. A newly developed drilling system in Korea, capable of performing not only sampling but also subsurface investigation, is introduced.

Roof bolts are an essential component of roof support systems in underground mines. They are used to provide structural support to the roof of the mine and prevent it from collapsing. Therefore, it is imperative to perform regular assessments of these roof bolts to avert any hazards. Manual investigations of roof bolts are done by surveyors in underground mines, which is extremely timeconsuming and challenging due to the low-light conditions in underground mines accompanied by stringent mine access rules. To this end, automated recognition of roof bolts in 3D point cloud data obtained through laser scanning in underground mines serves as a potential solution to aid roof bolt monitoring. With the continuous advancements in laser scanning-based 3D data acquisition systems, the feasibility of making such surface estimations from 3D point cloud data has increased severalfold.

It is restorative and regenerative by design and aims to keep products, components and materials at their highest utility and value at all times. The Norman B Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering, or the Department of Mining Engineering (the Department), at CanadaÆs University of British Columbia (UBC) is addressing the integration of sustainable development concepts into mining education and research on behalf of industry and society. Over the past decade, the DepartmentÆs education and research model has been evolving to incorporate collaborative and multidisciplinary strategies, where sustainability initiatives are taught in classes, supported in research and discussed in a voluntary collective of mostly graduate students û the Sustainability Working Group (SWG). The SWG has brought together a diverse array of disciplines from academia, industry, government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and mining communities. The operational mechanisms and structure of the SWG have enabled momentum to be gained through several multidisciplinary educational and research networking initiatives. It acts to attract new students with diverse backgrounds, foster innovative research, develop relationships and networks, and create the space to discuss progressive ideas and projects. The original cohort of SWG graduate students laid the foundation for sustainable research initiatives within the Department at UBC. Novel research has incorporated topics such as: community resilience, artisanal small-scale mining, sustainability indicators and corporate social responsibility, environmental assessment and impact benefit agreements and the recycling of waste. Propelled by the support of the Department and inspired by the works completed, a host of new graduate students have embarked on their research quests to integrate sustainability principles into their projects. Such projects include: social impacts and benefits of mining, artisanal small-scale mining, community health, the production and transport of mine pollutants, mine waste management, mineral process plant design and the evolution of community education and mine policy. This paper reports on the departmentÆs continuing research and development towards an understanding and evaluations of the ongoing contributions of mining to sustainable development.

A technology involving separate unit processes for the generation and use of ferric ions for the oxidation of sulphidic minerals has been developed. The technology utilises a stand-alone automated bioreactor for ferric-ion generation (termed SAAB-FIG) and produces a low pH, ferric ion-rich leach liquor with a high oxidation potential. This leach liquor is then employed, in a separate unit process, to oxidise sulphidic minerals and regenerate ferrous iron that may subsequently be recycled to the bioreactor for the continual generation of ferric ions. The technique was successfully applied for the recovery of copper from chalcocite (Cu2S) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), as well as other ores and concentrates containing copper sulphide minerals. Coarse ore, ground ore and concentrates were treated with acidic solutions containing 8 to 12 (g/L) Fe(III) ions at a variety of temperatures. This process yielded over 50 per cent of the contained copper from both chalcopyrite and chalcocite samples. Maximum reaction rates and copper recoveries were found to be highly dependent upon temperature and pH and leach liquors containing bacterial cells displayed little difference in their leaching efficiency when compared to cell-free leach liquors.

For hot mines, the use of mechanical refrigeration machines has become an essential feature of ventilation and cooling systems. Over the last 30 years, considerable effort has been made in developing refrigeration strategies and equipment to provide cooling that is cost-effective, reliable and energy efficient. In addition to these general design requirements it is necessary to take into account project specific factors such as long term mine cooling needs, operating strategy and installation time. This paper examines a number of actual mine cooling installations which illustrate how these features have influenced the design and installations. For many mines, it is known how the cooling requirements will increase as the mine develops, based on the life of mine plan. The design of the cooling installation must cater for both short- and long-term needs. The initial installation (to meet short-term requirements) must form an integral part of the ultimate cooling installation and as additional equipment and refrigeration machines are installed, it is necessary to ensure that the system remains cost-effective, reliable and energy efficient at all stages. For many mines, refrigeration machines are installed on surface and either operated near-continuously, or for the summer months only. Different maintenance strategies and policies with regard to standby equipment are highlighted for three mine installations. In spite of developments in cooling strategy, the cost of providing refrigeration remains expensive and many mines delay the introduction of refrigeration, as long as possible. When it is finally accepted that refrigeration is absolutely necessary, it is frequently necessary to æfast trackÆ the installation. To minimise site erection time and meet installation deadlines, factory pre-assembly and standardised modular equipment are widely used.

Hydrodynamic and mass transfer performance are presented for a 72.5 mm diameter pulsed disc and doughnut column of the type used by Western Mining Corporation, Olympic Dam Operation, for the extraction of uranium from sulphate media using Alamine 336 as extractant. For the present purpose, 4.0 g/L sulphuric acid was used as solute. The mass transfer data were interpreted in terms of the diffusion model, thus accounting for continuous phase axial dispersion. The results indicated that an efficiency corresponding to approximately one transfer unit over the 1.0 m height of the column was obtained. This efficiency is comparable to that observed by Gottliebsen (1997) for a pulsed perforated plate column using 173 gm/L sulphuric acid.

The factors affecting performance of base and precious metal smelting and converting processes are considered in relation to reactor characteristics. The chemical differences between processes are related to these factors for different reactor systems. The complete smelting and converting flowsheet involves a number of operations. The process selected for a particular feed and product requirement should be one which optimises the efficiency of the process, the cost of building and operating the technology and the long-term maintenance and productivity of the units.Ausmelt's approach to achieving an efficient process using its technology is described in relation to the smelting of copper concentrates for production-of blister copper.

The mining industry often needs to operate in remote or climatically harsh locations. The industry has recently been forced to deal with extreme conditions including floods, heatwaves and droughts. As these are becoming progressively frequent occurrences, mines typically build ‘downtime’ into production schedules and expect to incur costs to manage the various risks arising from climate extremes. Importantly, many environmental conditions are becoming more extreme and consequently, risk management based on past data can become increasingly ineffective. Market and shareholder demand for fewer interruptions are another pressure on mines to avoid prolonged or frequent downtime. Hence, adaptation to climate is becoming an important strategic move for many companies, many of whom are using future climate scenarios and alternative risk evaluations.We present here a method that uses commonly available mine site data to assist decision-making for reducing vulnerability to sudden flood. The method, ‘climate-related adaptation from terrain evaluation results’ (CRATER), identifies a mine’s flood ‘hot-spots’ and presents them as a ‘traffic lights’ warning map. The process then requires a failure analysis process such as fault-tree analysis to identify both the cause of possible failures and a range of possible failure-avoidance adaptations. In the final stage, management can assess the most suitable option for the mine, based on the availability of capital such as time, facilities, labour and money in addition to social acceptability of the options. CRATER has been tested in an open cut mine environment and is now being further developed to identify how subsidence over underground mines may impact on flooding and ponding over the mining life cycle (CRATER II). The green energy transition is speculated to cause an increase in the demand for raw materials while recycling rates are improving; discoveries are required to maintain supply. Geological remote sensing offers a cost-effective way of exploring mineral resources. While satellite and airborne imaging are routinely used for exploration targeting, a gap remains at the outcrop scale. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is advantageous for large-scale regional mapping, typically performed from satellite or airborne platforms. Accurately mapping geological lithologies remains challenging in inaccessible areas, such as rough terrain or mine sites. Proximal sensing techniques can boost geological activities’ reliability, safety, and efficiency in exploration or during mining activities. It also generates objective, reproducible results and valuable raw data that can be archived, further processed, and re-interpreted. Ground-based hyperspectral imaging of outcrops has steadily increased during the last decade due to sensor development and better processing routines. There is often a big technology gap related to mineral mapping, integration of images and spectra (reduction in manual identification of minerals and types) and hyperspectral data visualisation through remote sensing. TEXMiN Foundation, in collaboration with its industry partner Dassault Systemes Foundation, carried out the project, ‘Developing Hyperspectral Image Processing and Analysis, build a rich library of Hyperspectral images of a vast range of minerals from India which will help in increasing prediction accuracy of mineral deposit for mining exploration’.

Remote sensing has been used for many years but until recently its application has been limited by the resolution of the data available. High resolution airborne multi-spectral scanner data (MSS) has proven suitable for a number of applications including environmental management and monitoring. A shallow water mapping research. project completed on the Gold Coast has shown that- remote sensing can be used as a cost effective tool for environmental management and Monitoring.

The Eastern Distributor Tunnels - the first major road tunnel project in Australia - are the preferred solution to traffic congestion problems, when compared with alternatives, in this inner urban environment. This is because of the reduced impact on residential housing, the improvement of the existing environment, less restrictions on future developments, and a reduction in noise and pollution. Developments leading to a tunnelled solution, traffic needs and reasons for route location are discussed. Criteria for design of tunnel alignments and geometry are described, including the restraints imposed by surface connections on profiles and grades resulting in low rock cover at tunnel portals. The main geotechnical restraints are a major weathered dyke at the shallow large span underground fork and the weathered Ashfield Shale capping the Hawkesbury Sandstone at a portal. Rock cuttability and excavation methods are discussed. Roadheader machines are the most suitable for the varying shallow arched cross sections required and the tunnel lengths involved but the use of blasting in special situations cannot be ruled out. Initial support for the major tunnel lengths will be provided by rock reinforcement in conjunction with shotcrete. Steel ribs are proposed in areas of low cover and weak ground. Final support will comprise an insitu concrete lining. Construction concepts and special tunnelling methods required at the shallow underground forks and tunnels are described.

The geological exploration and evaluation of coal reserves involves the appraisal of very large amounts of data. Computers afford an ideal means of handling and manipulating the data, thereby avoiding the laborious and expensive method of manually compiling the logs in full descriptive language. The Minad system of computer storage and retrieval of geological and analytical data is particularly suited to the description of cores and cuttings from exploration drill-holes. The encoded data is arranged in a 120-column computer output sheet format; descriptive geological information in a 54-column geolog and analytical information in a 64-column assaylog. The acquired data is quantitative, uniform and relatively complete and can be selectively retrieved for processing by a wide range of specialized computer programs developed for the coal mining industry. Visual retrieval of data for manual processing is facilitated by the use of simple codes and logical word abbreviations.

There are significant Mineral Resource and Reserve reporting challenges facing a mining company operating in the global arena. This paper specifically examines the Mineral Resource and Reserve reporting challenge facing BHP Billiton. The changing regulatory environment creates a significant challenge for global mining companies when reporting Mineral Resources and Reserves. The development and implementation of internal policies and standards for collecting and collating resource and reserve information is required for corporate governance, however the challenge is then to report this information publicly in such a way as to comply with the various codes and requirements in the many jurisdictions in which the company is required to report. The move to an International Code is not only desirable but is an essential requirement in todayÆs global market. The agreement to report using a single code internationally is however only the first step. A truly practical international reporting system must have common definitions and guidelines for interpretation as well as an international approach to the definition of a Competent Person, and even more importantly a common acceptance of that code by the relevant investment regulatory bodies. Without the universal acceptance of the concept of an international reporting code by the major regulatory bodies, implementation of such a code will be limited. With the major global mining companies seeking to raise capital in the USA, the worldÆs largest capital market, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and its approach to reserve reporting is becoming increasingly important. The development and implementation of an International Code must gain the support and acceptance of the SEC if it is to be successful.
