Gallium (Ga)-containing compounds such as Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) and Gallium Nitride (GaN) are widely used in electronic devices due to their superior electro-optical properties and their usages increase rapidly. For the sustainable supply of Ga to electronic industry, therefore, the recycling of Gallium becomes essential. Pyrometallurgical Ga recycling process involves the complex chemical reactions between slag, matte, liquid metal, gas, refractories, etc. Therefore, the accurate thermodynamic information and phase diagram data for the oxide system containing Ga2O3 is important. In the present study, new phase diagram experiments for binary SiO2-Ga2O3 and ternary CaO-SiO2-Ga2O3 system are carried out using Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and quenching experiments followed by Electron Probe Micro-Analyser (EPMA) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) phase analysis. Based on new phase diagram data and available literature data, the thermodynamic modelling of the entire CaO-SiO2-Ga2O3 system is performed for the first time.

In Australia, responsibility for abandoned mines can be unclear. With a few exceptions, state and territory governments have become responsible for abandoned mines on Crown land and private landholders are responsible for abandoned mines on freehold land. Abandoned mines pose risks and opportunities across the full suite of sustainability themes (environmental, human health and safety, socio-economic and community development) after mining ceases.Across Australia, there are more than 50 000 abandoned mines recorded, ranging in size from individual shafts to large polluting open cut mines. Addressing the safety and environmental impacts of these sites, as well as the socio-economic development opportunities of significant rehabilitation projects, requires the implementation of effective policies and programs. Qualitatively defined graded scales or ‘rubrics’ have been used for many years in student assessment and increasingly in the performance assessment of other sectors (Davidson, 2005). While risk-based maturity models have been used for safety prioritisation (Westrum, 1993; Hudson, 2007; DRET, 2008; Hancock, 2010) and evaluation of organisational development (Esteves et al, 2010), this paper is the first to adapt maturity models for the evaluation of abandoned mine rehabilitation programs in Australia.In this paper, we used indicators based on the national policy for abandoned mines to assess the maturity of abandoned mine programs. Fourteen elements of maturity were identified (Unger et al, 2012) under the five chapters of the national policy for abandoned mines (MCMPR and MCA, 2010). Jurisdictions were then evaluated and ranked on their maturity on the basis of information that was web-accessible. Information transparency of abandoned mines policies and programs is in itself one element of the maturity chart. Each jurisdiction in Australia was compared with one another and with a Canadian jurisdiction; the British Columbia (BC) Crown Contaminated Sites Program (CCSP), which represents leading practice (Unger, 2009; Unger et al, 2012).Our research found that in some jurisdictions in Australia there is little or no information on abandoned mine programs or individual abandoned mine sites on government websites, while other jurisdictions provided very detailed program information on planning, funding and implementation. Each jurisdiction in Australia, for which web-based information was available, had some elements where they were more mature than other Australian jurisdictions. For some elements, maturity ranked equivalent to the BC CCSP, but most Australian jurisdictions were less mature. There was only one element where a single Australian jurisdiction ranked higher than the BC program in maturity. Legacy mine policies, programs, priorities and funding information via departmental websites are easier to find in some jurisdictions, indicating progression toward greater transparency and more mature programs. A systematic approach to monitoring and evaluating abandoned mines programs is essential for accountability as it can demonstrate liability reduction over time and continual improvement. At the northern margin of New Guinea there is a fundamental problem related to the relative timing of arc- continent collision(s) represented in the Papuan Fold-Belt (PFB) and backarc spreading in the Caroline basins. New fission track dates from basement and sediments within major anticlines of the PFB indicate that uplift occurred at 4.0 ¦ 0.5 Ma. The timing is consistent with the fold and thrust shortening (more than 100 km) of the PFB which occurred in the Late Miocene/Early Pliocene as evidenced by the deformed Miocene carbonates and Pliocene molasse deposits. However, in northern Papua New Guinea, earlier work has suggested that ophiolite emplacement and associated metamorphism occurred in the late Oligocene/early Miocene.The evidence suggests that the late Miocene/early Pliocene deformation was of considerably greater magnitude than the earlier obduction event. The Caroline Plate lying north of New Guinea has been interpreted as a backarc basin which commenced spreading in the Eocene and ceased spreading in the Late Oligocene (about 28 Ma). The remnant arc presently docked to New Guinea was active in the Eocene and Oligocene and is believed to be the arc related to the formation of the Caroline Plate. The cessation of spreading of the Caroline Plate has previously been interpreted to be due to arc continent collision during the Late Oligocene/Early Miocene, but such a collision is now known not to have occurred. In the Cretaceous and Palaeocene subduction was to the south beneath New Guinea, but "flipped" in the Eocene to give a north-dipping subduction zone far to the north of New Guinea, driving Caroline Plate backarc extension. This backarc basin reached a limiting size at about 28 Ma resulting in the end of subduction. With the continued northward movement of Australia, Mesozoic oceanic crust was obducted southward onto the New Guinea margin in the Late Oligocene/Early Miocene. In the Miocene south-dipping subduction beneath New Guinea commenced until the now extinct Caroline Plate arc collided with New Guinea in the Early Pliocene, causing extensive regional compression and sinistral strike-slip faulting. This new tectonic framework suggests that backarc basins reach a limiting ridge-trench distance of 1000-1500 knm, beyond which "subduction-pull" cannot drive further spreading so subduction and spreading are terminated.

The Central West of New South Wales is emerging as a significant metallogenic province. The development of Northparkes Mines (North Limited) and the Cadia Hill deposit (Newcrest) are establishing NSW as a highly prospective porphyry copper-gold province. Exploration in the area has been further buoyed by the Ridgeway discovery by Newcrest near Cadia. The fact that the Ridgeway prospect was discovered 300 m below surface under Tertiary basalt cover indicates that surface prospecting can no longer be considered alone as an adequate method to find significant new deposits.

The applicability of environmental geotechnics for erosion management is increasing in importance worldwide. The environmental impact of mining and evolving environmental legislation has been receiving increased attention worldwide in the last two decades (Bradfield, Shultz and Stone, 1996). The potential impacts associated with unstable spoil dumps from mine operations is the focus of concern both by the mining industry, environmental legislative agencies and members of the public. This is because of the need to increase the reliability of erosion prediction and in the minimisation of costs for spoil dump design. Engineered slopes of mine spoils may be stable at the end of construction, but they can deteriorate over time. Engineering design of mine spoil dumps seeks to reduce the potential for such erosion damage through correct selection of an initial stable landform scheme (Goh, 1997). The design of mine spoil dumps must also conform to the specifications of evolving legislation. The Queensland Environmental Management Overview Strategy (EMOS) states that, for minimised degradation of the surface area due to erosion during the development of a project, the erosion rates should be between 12 - 40 tonnes/hectare/year and that the depths of rills and gullies be limited to less than 30 cm (QDPI, 1988). The aim of engineering design is to ensure the long-term stability of the spoil dumps. The implementation of effective planning and operating procedures through recontouring and grading assists in the reshaping of spoil dumps to a safe, stable and non-erodible environment.

Jointed rock mass is often encountered in rock engineering and its stability has always been a major concern in underground engineering. To analyze the stress characteristics and their variations in jointed rocks, in this study, a new concept of sub-instability stage before rock failure is defined, and a new experimental method is used to investigate interaction between defects and intact rock of the jointed rock mass during the subinstability stage., Firstly, external characteristics of stress and failure mode of the whole jointed rock are investigated systematically by conducting uniaxial compression tests on red sandstone samples with a set of preexisting open flaws of different sizes, and the interactive damage of intact parts and defects in the subinstability stage was further studied. Secondly, rock-like material samples made of bonded plaster blocks were tested and internal data from stress sensor between the strong and weak segments were collected. The transforming processes from independent activity of the individual segment to overall interactive movement of jointed rock before the unstable failure were analysed. The test results indicated that the subinstability stage marked the beginning of interactive failure between the intact rock and defects. In the early subinstability stage, the relatively intact parts bore most of the load in a jointed rock mass, and the defects were damaged firstly which caused high strain around it. The areas of high strain increase rapidly, extending and migrating, causing damage to the intact parts. In the later sub-instability stage, the interaction effect reached its maximum, and a large number of cracks appeared in the intact rock and they propagated and coalesced. Intact parts experienced rapid failure and then the jointed rock failed. The experimental method used in this paper to identify the sub-instability stage could be used to identify failure precursors of jointed rock masses and to develop technology for disaster prevention in rock engineering. Land surface deformation can be caused by underground mining activities. The maximum subsidence normally occurs directly above the location of the excavation of the coal seam. In the case where the longwall mining technique is applied, the magnitude and shape of the subsidence bowl are constrained by the longwall structure (pillar). This paper describes the use of satellite radar interferometry for monitoring surface subsidence due to underground mining, as a cost-effective geodetic technique and complementary to conventional ground surveying techniques. This paper uses data acquired by the current generation of SAR satellites û the European ENVISAT and the Japanese ALOS û to monitor ground subsidence in the southern highland coalfield in New South Wales, Australia. An accumulated DInSAR subsidence mine map is produced using six successive ALOS acquisitions. The results are post-analysed with the aid of geographic information systems (GIS) and validated using ground survey data.

The texture of an ore type is fundamental in understanding the metallurgical behaviour of an ore. This study will show examples of how quantified textural attributes (mineral shape, grain size and mineral association) can be obtained from automated and scanning electron microscope (SEM)-based microscopy and utilised using advanced image processing techniques. Examples will be shown of integrating quantified and semi-quantified meso- and macro-scale textural attributes as well as how they relate to texture-based visual logging systems. The implications of texture for processing behaviours such as comminution, liberation and recovery will be discussed. This research is part of a major collaborative geometallurgical project undertaken at the Centre of Excellence in Ore Deposits (CODES, University of Tasmania) and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC, University of Queensland). Orebodies in the Mt. Charlotte - Hannans North Area N. & B. of the town of Kalgoorlie provide a marked'dontrast to the pyrite - telluride lodes of the Golden Mile, although both groups of orebodies appear to be fundamentally related. These highly siliceous telluride free orebodies N. of the Golden Mile are closely related to strong oblique faulting. The Golden Mile. lodes, while possessing an apparent over-all relationship to the oblique faults also have a close relationship to E.-dipping strike faults.

"Northparkes installed and commissioned a secondary crushing circuit in 2010 to debottleneck the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill constrained grinding circuits. Following further improvements to the circuit (inclusion of a double deck vibrating screen), the project successfully delivered finer feed to the SAG mill. The result of this project was an increase in the milled tonnes from 5.6 Mt/a in 2012 to 6.0 Mt/a in 2013.The increased throughput rates introduced new challenges with the circuit becoming power limited. How to best optimise the available comminution power, while delivering the optimal particle size to the flotation circuit was made the key optimisation objective. To achieve this objective, Northparkes initiated a project that included engaging comminution experts. Recommendations included changes to the SAG mill including mill lifter design, increased grinding media charge levels and reduced grinding media size with aim of producing a finer grind size.Northparkes implemented these recommendations along with some other changes to SAG discharge grates and the mill discharge vibrating screen. This achieved a substantial reduction in the flotation feed particle size distribution (approximately 20 microns) by utilising increased average SAG power utilisation, in turn resulting in a two per cent increase in copper recovery.With power utilisation now maximised, the next phase of optimisation has moved to the throughput-grind-recovery relationship and the cost benefit analysis of installing additional grinding power.Citation:Sulianto, Y, Trott, T, Morgan, D, Bell, T, Kock, F and Putland, B, 2016. This paper summarises the process taken to simplify 35 ground support standards accounting for the multiple development profiles, dynamic geotechnical environment and the practical safety implications of a large-scale change in the ground control standards. This reduction was required after an incident involving incorrect standards being issued. The subsequent investigation identified that: • Selection of ground support standard for a mining instruction (MI) is not straightforward due to multiple standards, standards not reflecting current reinforcement used and complex geotechnical environment being encountered. Instead, site-specific ground control instructions were being issued. • Ground support standards were hard to follow and confusing, errors were present and not all standards to scale. • Ground support standards being used did not reflect what was being installed, ie bolt type incorrect and mesh orientation different. • No process or tier action response plan (TARP) for operators to follow for ground control standard noncompliance. • No justification for ground support standards being used in the current geotechnical environment. • No process for ground support standard selection and thereby no paper trail to document and assess adequacy of performance. A project was undertaken to reduce and simplify the ground support standards, produce a justification document to support ground support design and develop a process for site practitioners to identify the type of ground support standard required for the mining instruction. The exercise of rationalising the ground support was met with some challenges, including: • Technical aspects to determine the level of demand and the capacity for each ground support scheme. • Training the geotechnical engineers how to determine the level of risk for each area. • Winning over other technical services staff and the underground mining contractor of the new approach and then implementation. One of the major successes was the acceptance by the underground operators who found the system simplified their work and gave them increased confidence in management of seismicity. The rationalised ground support standards have now been successfully in place for over two years.

"Underground coal mining is the dominant method of extracting thermal and coking coal in the southern and western coalfields of New South Wales. Monitoring mining-related subsidence forms an important component of environmental impact assessments and subsidence management plans, particularly when there are conflicts between the interests and requirements of mining and environment and community groups. However, there are few specific guidelines for monitoring the impacts of subsidence on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, leading to inconsistent policy approaches and highly variable abilities of monitoring programs to accurately detect biological change.This paper highlights the use of a conceptual framework to guide the development of a long-term ecological monitoring program at an underground coalmine in the Western Blue Mountains, New South Wales. Two pilot studies are described: determining the level of observer agreement to assess the condition of a vulnerable tree species (Capertee Stringybark) comparing field sampling methods for detecting a rare heath shrub, Epacris muelleri, using a power analysis to determine sampling intensity requirements.These examples demonstrate that investment in initial pilot studies to test different monitoring approaches can have long-term benefits for stakeholders by more confidently being able to detect potential impacts.CITATION:McCaffrey, N?B,?Glenn, V, Erskine, P?D, Johns,?C?and Fletcher, A?T, 2014. The Hunter Valley Coal Chain (HVCC) consists of mining companies, rail operators, rail track owners and terminal operators, together forming the worldÆs largest coal exporting facility. In 2008, the throughput of HVCC was about 92 million tonnes, or more than ten per cent of the worldÆs total trade in coal for that year. The coal export operation generates around $15 billion in annual export income for Australia. As demand has increased significantly in recent years, and is expected to increase further in the future, efficient supply chain management is crucial. The Hunter Valley Coal Chain Coordinator Limited (HVCCC) was founded to enable integrated planning and coordination of the interests of all parties, thus improving the efficiency of the system as a whole. One of the many planning challenges faced by the HVCCC is that of annual maintenance planning. Different supply chain elements, such as trains, railway track, terminal equipment and load points, must undergo regular preventive and corrective maintenance, leading to significant reductions in system capacity (up to 15 per cent). However good alignment of the maintenance tasks can reduce their impact, and the HVCCC undertakes an annual process to ensure the impact of maintenance on the supply chain capacity is as small as possible. This is achieved in an iterative negotiation process between HVCCC and individual service providers. In the past, maintenance schedule optimisation was largely manual, which for the more than 1000 tasks involved is quite labour-intensive.In this paper the authors describe an approach developed at the University of Newcastle in partnership with the HVCCC to automate this schedule optimisation process. We will discuss our experience in applying exact (mixed integer programming) and heuristic techniques from mathematics and computer science to address the problem. This work is anticipated to lead to new decision-support tools for the HVCCCÆs capacity planning team.

As part of global systems of mineral production and consumption, the Australian minerals sector is facing sustainability challenges across technological, social, ecological, economic and governance domains, as well as between local, national and global scales. To ensure that the Australian minerals sector progresses towards sustainability, it is imperative to understand the possible ways in which AustraliaÆs mineral resources could support sustainable futures. A significant research gap exists between the complex nature of questions concerning minerals sustainability and the reductionist methods available to deal with them. This paper argues the need for broader, more integrated approaches to questions concerning minerals sustainability, which can address multiple human perspectives, complex and æmessyÆ patterns and processes across multiple organisational, temporal and geographical scales and whole systems of mineral production and consumption. To inform the development of a new approach to minerals sustainability, this work reviews the contemporary understanding of the Australian minerals sustainability problematic, from the perspective of the Australian minerals sector (Minerals Council of Australia), the Australian research sector (Mudd 2007a, 2007b; Mudd and Ward 2008) and a multi-scale international project (MMSD 2002). This review shows the focus of current responses to the minerals sustainability problematic, identifies the need for an integrated approach to questions of minerals sustainability and addresses how different approaches are informed by underlying and unarticulated assumptions about the tolerability of tradeoffs between different societal goals, the treatment of uncertainty and the application of different conceptual geographical, organisational, temporal and life cycle scales to define the minerals sustainability problematic. The Mineral Resources Landscape proposed, offers an expanded conceptualisation of minerals sustainability, to link minerals production and consumption in an integrated assessment across the entire minerals supply chain, connecting social, ecological, technological, economic and governance domains across local, national and global scales. The key leverage points governing change in the Mineral Resources Landscape are identified as: the material source, extraction and production technologies, level of service and value, and consumption patterns. Mapping the key challenges facing the minerals sector, as identified in the review herein, indicates that the boundaries defining traditional conceptualisations of minerals sustainability focus on the material source and technology and ignore two very key drivers of the Mineral Resources Landscape û the æservicesÆ minerals offer to society and the æconsumption trendsÆ which assimilate these services into society. Understanding these overlooked aspects of the Mineral Resources Landscape, along with the conventional areas of focus, is essential for identifying the Australian minerals sector as a provider of sustainable mineral services. This insight prompts a reconsideration of the role of minerals services and consumption trends, together with the role of the material source and technology in shaping change and the emergence of sustainable systems of Australian minerals production and consumption, across multiple scales and domains.

"The carbon-in-pulp process has been used extensively in the gold industry since the late 1970s to recovery leached gold from solution. Despite more than 30 years of experience in operating carbon circuits, average gold solution loss has remained at an average of 0.02–0.03 ppm (mg/L), higher than the ‘best practice’ target of 0.01 ppm.Process modelling, such as SIMCIL developed by the Curtin Gold Technology Group (GTG), can provide information on optimum set points; however, manual control of the circuit limits the potential benefits.An automated carbon measurement device, the Scout Carbon Meter, has been developed to allow for automation of carbon concentration measurement, and automated control of the carbon transfer pumps. The development of regional resource synergies in intensive areas with concentrations of minerals processing industries provides a significant avenue towards sustainable resource processing. Gladstone (Queensland) and Kwinana (Western Australia) are two of AustraliaÆs major heavy industrial areas. There are a number of successful regional synergies in both areas. In addition to the existing regional synergies in both areas, more potential synergy opportunities appear to exist which, upon implementation, could benefit industry, the environment and the community. To further enhance the development of such potential regional synergies, the Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (http://www.csrp.com.au) commissioned research projects to facilitate the identification of potential synergies and assist with their implementation in both regions. This paper presents a selection of specific examples from both regions to illustrate the sustainability benefits from regional synergy developments. Although the composition of industries in the Gladstone and Kwinana regions is different both in terms of geography and industry diversity, similarities in synergy developments for both regions are apparent. Consequently, the examples discussed in this paper are organised around the key themes of water, energy and inorganic by-products. Comparison on a theme basis highlights success factors of successful synergies and demonstrates the range of benefits resulting from their implementation.

The goal of this project has been to digitise and use drill parameter data from rotary drilling (measurement while drilling; MWD) for a more effective planning of the blasting process in surface mines. A more accurate and reliable digital drilling and automatic hardness identification technology was developed, which includes both a hardware and software system. In the aspect of hardware, we designed a positioning, navigation and hardness perception terminal system which consists of a global positioning system original equipment manufacturer board, programmable logic controller and sensors of measuring major parameters, and a wireless data transmission system which combines digital blasting platform and wireless transmission facilities. In the aspect of software, we developed the navigation software of locating blastholes using LabVIEW and C++, and the blasthole design software using AutoCAD ActiveX (C#) technologies. The Mount Isa Copper Concentrator was commissioned in 1973. Since commissioning some significant upgrades have been undertaken such as: • the replacement of the rod mill/ball mill circuit with AG mills and the subsequent conversion of the AG mills to SAG Mills. • the introduction of columns as retreat cleaners in 1987, then reallocated as prefloat cleaners in 1994 and rougher cleaners in 1996.• the repurposing of some rougher capacity to preflotation roughing to remove carbonaceous pyrite and talc in 1994.• the introduction of a Jameson Cell for preflotation cleaning in 2000. • the expansion of the rougher and cleaner circuits in 2002 with the inclusion of 6 x 100 m3 Wemco cells to replace the capacity lost to preflotation and to increase residence time and improve recovery. In 2013 work commenced to replace the cleaner circuit after 40 years of operation. The new cleaner circuit, consisting of 3 x B5400/18 Jameson Cells, replaced the rougher cleaner columns, cleaners, recleaners and retreat Agitair banks and was commissioned in Sep 2015. The new cleaner circuit was configured as two cells in series producing the final concentrate and a cleaner scavenger cell to supplement the existing Wemco cleaner scavenger cells. Semi-arid regions suffer from two afflictions; evaporation may exceed precipitation by multiples of two or more and variations in precipitation can be both extreme and difficult to predict. Many Australian mines are situated in semi-arid areas where communities are reliant upon locally sourced water or special purpose infrastructure is built as part of the mine construction. As the question of climate change looms, issues related to future water supply and sustainable water management become increasingly important. Across Australia several mining operations co-exist in a single surface water and/or groundwater catchment area. The management of water on a mine by mine or a community by community basis is illogical and must be reconsidered based on a single water catchment and a whole-of-community basis. Mine water should be considered on a full life cycle basis where the quality is assessed for specific mine site applications. This paper addresses technical challenges that include surface water and groundwater supply in semi-arid regions, operational water in the mining industry, beneficial uses of water, water economics and demand management. In much the same way as emissions trading evolved into a multi-stakeholder forum, mining regions offer scope for innovative thinking in water supply and reuse. In addition, this paper considers a number of initiatives taken by Australian mining companies that are entering a prefeasibility stage and contrasts these initiatives against the established success within a South African mining region. The challenges and potential solutions to this initiative are presented for future consideration.

"Falling commodity prices and a rising supply surplus have ushered in a period of restraint in capital project investment across the global mining and metals sector. Competition for capital project funding has seen fewer projects progress through investment gates and a stronger focus on projects that deliver gains in capital productivity and strategic outcomes.Over the course of the 2015 financial year, EY conducted a study of 108 projects in the global mining and metals sector (EY analysis; Larsson and Ericsson, 2014; SNL Financial, 2015). The projects studied were at various life cycle stages and related to the development of copper, iron ore, gold, coal, nickel and other commodities. Each individual project investment exceeded US$1 B, and the studied group represented a cumulative investment value of US$367 B.The research found that the majority of projects were delayed and/or over budget when measured against the initial estimates made during the early stages of the project life cycle. Of the surveyed projects, 69 per cent were identified as facing cost overruns with an average overrun of 62 per cent above the initial estimate and 50 per cent reported schedule delays, even after remedial acceleration initiatives.The analysis found that budget and schedule overruns could be attributed to five key causes:project management factorsstakeholder conflictsresource constraintsregulatory, and policy-related challengesunfavourable external environment.Improving project delivery performance starts with successful planning, followed by rigorous management during delivery. From global experience on large and complex capital programs, EY has observed a consistent theme of underinvestment and a lack of focus in three often-overlooked but critical areas:implementing effective governance and reporting frameworks with lead indicators that reliably flag emerging risks while they can still be mitigatedallocating adequate cost and time contingency to account for risks across the life cycleenhancing the value of contingency by aligning contingency plans with scenario plans.This paper explores the surprising findings of the study, proposes a root cause model and examines key considerations in applying these critical enabling techniques.CITATION:Hudson, L, Mitchell, P, Ferres, G, Bobbermien, K and Pushpan, S, 2016.
