Ore in pillars constitutes a significant proportion of the ore reserve at PasmincoÆs Broken Hill Mine. Many of these pillars are narrow (5 -6 m) and high (16 û 35 m) vertical blocks. High-grade ore has been left between primary horizontal cut and fill stopes. These stopes were mined from the late-1960s until the early-1980s. Fill material is a variety of hydraulically stowed sand, sand-cement, and remnant timber support. Many pillar cut-throughs were made between the old stopes. In order to gain access for the current pillar recovery operations, it has been necessary to develop pillar drill drives through, and adjacent to, the hydraulic filled stopes. Whilst long hole recovery of vertical pillars is not new, some notable successes using innovative ideas have been achieved during 1997. These innovations include:The use of steel mesh reinforcing in shotcrete when mining through, or adjacent to, hydraulic fill. Construction of steel sets to support vent rises and haulage ways encountered in the cut-throughs. The use of ground movement monitoring equipment. Survey lasers with chain droppers and convergence monitors were installed in the 18 Pillar to detect any movement of the pillar block and decrease risk to personnel. The development of a three-dimensional computer model of primary stoping, using Vulcan software, to assist in the design of pillars. Maximisation of recovery using different drilling and firing practices.

The optimal sequence of decisions on rates of production and cutoff grades is obtained by a dynamic programming model. The main parameters are : 1. the size of the deposit, average grades and grade distributions, 2. the operating costs of mining and concentration, 3. the investments in mine and mill, 4. the smelter charge, 5. the price(s) of the metal, 6. the recovery and the grade of the concentrate, 7. the rate of interest, 8. the taxation formulae, 9. the upper limit to rate and the rate interval and 10. the upper and lower limits to cutoff and the cutoff interval. An amount of ore can be mined at various rates while applying various cutoff grades. It is assumed that a decision to mine at a certain rate during a period conducts to a certain state regardless of the cutoff grade. This assumption which is valid for several

Mining had a very considerable effect on the country's development. The visual evidence remaining is an integral part of New Zealand history. Early mining for manganese and copper in the 1840s was succeeded by alluvial gold rushes. These gave way to hard rock extraction, hydraulic elevation and dredging. Coal mining dating from the 1850s was fairly widespread. Other minerals were obtained on a small scale. Manufacture of mining' machinery stimulated industrial engineering enterprises. Schools of mines played a significant part in advancing technical skills and several remain as museums. Surviving mine structures and site relics are part of the industrial heritage signifying the technological and economic development of a small isolated nation. Some of these are described. Identification, recording and preservation where practicable is advocated.

A microcomputer based expert system is presented for fast and cheap mineral identification. Because of the increasing pipularityof and interest for minerals and precious stones (selling, hobby polishing, collecting, teaching etc.) we pointedly deal with gemstone identification. In most cases only some fundamental data are needed to identify a mineral sample (or precious stone) if we know how to use these data. The important, characterizing data of the well-known minerals are stored in the data-base of our program-system. The visible and measured optical and physical properties of the sample are compared adequately with the stored data to get the result, the name of the examined mineral. The system works in a simple, friendly way - asking questions, understanding answers - so that no special computer knowledge is necessary to use it, only the answers should be typed in. The main advantage of the system is that only relatively simple and fast measure-ments are required. Based on these measurements a fast, reliable identification is processed on a cheap com-puter running a sophisticated program-system. The MINTEST system handles even those cases when the tested mineral cannot be determined based on the given input data.

Although we have access to a wide range of sophisticated process design and improvement tools in combination with a significant range of case studies, the mineral resource industry still manages to be plagued by the negative publicity surrounding operating plant failures because they were neither smart nor safe, together with proposed projects that fail at the first or second hurdle. The general public and the finance industry are generally totally uniformed about projects that ramp-up to name plate capacity on time and on budget and even more so when ahead of schedule and under budget. As the saying goes, good news does not cut the mustard.The following is a summary of the author’s sometimes jaundiced view about why metallurgical plants do not live up to their technical and commercial expectations. In no way should the summary be construed as a negative reflection on the skills of the metallurgical profession. Rather, it is to be taken as a positive acknowledgement of those skills and is intended to highlight some of the major considerations that need to be assessed as a potential project transforms into a sustainable technical and commercial reality.While a considerable portion of the summary is directed at developing hydrometallurgical flowsheets, the general principles are equally important to all aspects of extractive metallurgy.For convenience, the summary covers the following five basic discussion points – project, people, process, patents and politicians.

The industrial practice of separating finely' around valuable minerals from associ- ated gangue materials by froth flotation is well known. Despite the obvious importance of this industrial process, the predictive tools for plant engineering evaluation of flotation process variable changes are still in a developmental stage. Consider, for example, the situation where an operating engineer is faced with evaluating a change in an existing chemical reagent scheme, possibly based on batch laboratory data. When all is said and done, the engineer must still perform detailed physical testing of the proposed reagent change on the actual equipment in plant use to be confident even of the direc- tion of change of plant results, let alone the economic viability of the change. The theory behind chemical reagent behaviour in froth flotation has been studied extensively, e.g., (Aplan {1980}, Fuerstenau {1976}, Fuerstenau {1962}, and Somasundaran {1980}), and, certainly, important progress has been made. Unfortunately, the nature of the flotation process, with its complicated heterogeneous surface chemisty activity operating on highly variable and difficut to characterize ore surfaces, coupled with com- plex mass and momentum transfer phenomena, :;l riously compromises the plant scale predictive capability of theoretically based models.

In hard rock mining, large-scale bulk mining methods such as block or panel caving (BC/PC) and sublevel caving (SLC) typically generate significant surface deformations such as subsidence. Surface deformations need to be considered in the project evaluation and planning stages of cave mines, for example, planning and location of critical underground mine planning infrastructure such as portals, haulage and vent shafts, access roads, or potential damage to existing infrastructure, changes to surface water management, waste dump, stockpile and tailings dam stability, and environmental impacts. Assessing the impact and risks associated with subsidence is a key component in robust mine planning and operations management.

The fluorite/oleate system has been studied extensively since the begin- nings of flotation research. The well-defined relatively simple crystal structure of fluorite and its ionic bonding make it a model system for study. Our understanding of fluorite/ oleate flotation chemistry continues to grow but as yet remains incomplete. Besides a review of our understanding of this system, recent findings are presented in this paper, and new research horizons are identified.

The Middleback Ranges are a series of parallel northsouth ridges on the eastern side of the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, about 20 miles inland from the Spencer Gulf, as shown in Fig. 1. They extend for some 20 miles across the centre of the County of York. North of them, on the same line of strike, in, the County of Manchester, is a disconnected series of lesser which ends in the Iron Monarch-Iron Knob ridge, the principal iron ore locality. These ridges are referred to in the following pages as an integral part of the Middleback Ranges.The deposits of hematite which outcrop in these ranges (Fig. 1) form the most important group of iron ore bodies in Australia, and are exploited by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company. The largest of them is the Iron Monarch (Fig. 6) .H: The next largest are the Iron Duke, the Iron Prince and Iron Baron. The Iron Knob, Iron Duchess, the North and South Iron Knights, Iron Queen, and the small body south of it, the Kimba Lease, and the deposits in the Cook's and Ash Leases, are all smaller.Numerous small lens-like bodies of hematite occur throughout the ridges, but are not of sufficient size to be of commercial use. At present only the Iron Monarch and the Iron Prince bodies are being worked. The mostly submerged New Zealand sub-continent has a complex geological history and an active oceanographic regime that provides opportunities and challenges for offshore mineral exploration. Known deposits include polymetallic Fe-Mn nodules and crusts, polymetallic massive sulfides, phosphatic nodules, titanomagnetitie ironsands and placer gold deposits. Currently exploration interest is high with some 3.5 per cent of the EEZ under prospecting permit or application.   Article 76 of the UNCLOS convention allows coastal states to have sovereign rights over areas of the seafloor that are natural prolongations of the landmass that constitute submerged parts of the continental margin as extended continental shelf. New Zealand has substantial areas of elevated ridges and plateaux beyond the 200 M EEZ that form extended continental shelf. New Zealand has nearly completed a ten year, $44.4 M programme to define its outer extended continental shelf. New Zealand will lodge its outer limits of the extended continental shelf with the UN-appointed Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in 2006, which if accepted, will enclose ~1.8 million km2 beyond the existing EEZ. Ocean Survey 20/20 is a follow-on marine mapping programme to underpin resource exploration and environmental management of the EEZ and extended continental shelf.

In 1990, the Queensland mining industry had come to the conclusion that new safety and health legislation based on risk identification and control was required if the mining industry was to be effectively and efficiently regulated. In particular stakeholders in the coal mining industry had arrived at this opinion after the industry had suffered a number of major underground explosions over the 14-year period between 1972 and 1986. Also by 1990, a general consensus had emerged across both the coal and metalliferous mining sectors that mining industry was over regulated and, more to the point this over regulation did not encourage industry to identify and address the underlying causes that had led to a cycle of major mining accidents in the state. The prevailing opinion was that the prescriptive legislation left the ownership of risk management with the regulator and not with the mine operator. This paper discusses the background to the development of the Queensland Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 and the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 and the progress made in improving safety and health since the statutes came into force on the 16 March 2001. The paper discusses the issues that had to be addressed during the development of the legislation including the interaction with other legislation based on based on risk management principles that either overly or interface with the mining legislation. The effect the underground explosion at Moura No 2 in 1994 had on the final content of the new legislation is also considered. Health is often the neglected twin of safety and health legislation and the paper previews the health surveillance system being proposed in Queensland to ensure that health of mine and quarry workers is afforded the same priority as their safety. By increasing the structured management of occupational health problems in our mines there is an opportunity to make significant improvements in mine safety In conclusion the paper reviews the results to date since the introduction of the new mining safety and health legislation in Queensland on the 16 March 2001. Progress has been made and more is yet to be achieved

The Pic de Fon iron oxide deposit is a potential major new source of iron ore, located at the southern end of the Simandou range in eastern Guinea on the West African Craton. The deposit is hosted by banded iron formations (BIFs) within a supracrustal sequence, which lies unconformably upon a crystalline basement. The host BIFs and shales have been metamorphosed up to staurolite-grade itabirite and phyllite respectively. Stratigraphic relationships are obscured by polyphase deformation, although the sequence appears to comprise a lower phyllite(-minor quartzite) unit and transitional phyllite-iron formation overlain by three itabirite units. It is the itabirite units, selectively enriched to iron grades in excess of 65 per cent Fe (with low deleterious elements), that constitute the Pic de Fon deposit. Samples acquired from exploration diamond drill holes and outcrop across the deposit have been collected to investigate the Pic de Fon lithologies and iron-rich material types. Initial research techniques have included geological mapping, reflected light microscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD) studies and ICP-AES geochemistry. The aim is to develop a model for deposit genesis that may assist future exploration and deposit exploitation planning. Results to date have identified a variety of hematite textures, which include recrystallised trellis, interlobate and granoblastic hematite after magnetite. In addition, fine-grained bladed to acicular microplaty hematite appears to both replace itabirite banding and infill porosity. Field relationships indicate a structural control of microplaty hematite development. Geochemistry and XRD results suggest a loss of silica with negligible iron addition during the conversion of itabirite to ore grade mineralisation. The enrichment process(es) is also accompanied by a gradual increase in K, Mg, Na, (Ca and Al).

During the last century Allis-Chalmers has supplied many screens of various types to industry, from revolving screens to the large capacity highly efficient screen available today. The features incorporated over these years in horizontal and inclined screens are varied and numerous and include many innovations such as tri-and bi-sloped screen decks. Today the emphasis is on wide vibrating screens with good "G" value, with large "throw", to achieve high capacity. Larger screens lead the way to treating a somewhat neglected area of mining operations - that of concentrator mine flotation tailings to allow effective transportation and stacking by conveyor belt. The benefits from a cost, water saving and environment view point are discussed in this paper.

Copper plays an essential role in our society. It is one of the key materials supporting economic growth and human development in emerging economies, for its common use in construction, power generation and transmission. It is also a critical metal for the transition to a low carbon future, particularly for its uses in renewable energy and electric vehicles. As a result, global demand for copper has been increasing steadily and is predicted to continue in the future. The demand-supply gap is currently growing, and new mines will be needed to fill it. This project observes the current pipeline of copper mining projects, which are characterised by technical complexity (lower grades, deeper deposits, complex mineralogy etc.) but also environmental, social and governance (ESG) complexities. A common assumption in the mining industry is that a rise in copper prices will unlock these deposits. However, while most technical complexities are price sensitive and are likely to be overcome in favourable economic conditions, the influence of ESG complexities is more difficult to evaluate. Although the bromo-cyanide or Diehl process for the extraction of gold from its ores is used on several of the Kalgoorlie mines, very little information has been published on the original process, and no details are available from the various mines now using it. The following description of the process as carried on at the Hannan's Star plant, where several modifications were introduced by the author, will therefore be of interest to mining men, and it is hoped that some discussion on this paper will provide further useful information to the mining community.The process was first installed on the Hannan's Star mine, where a full working plant was erected by the London-Hamburg Co. In their contract they guaranteed a 91 per cent. extraction on a sulphide ore of 15 dwt value. This was considered a very high extraction at the time, and the plant successfully carried out its work.The new features in the process were the finer grinding of the ore, for which purpose the tube mill was introduced, and the addition of a solution of bromo-cyanide to the vats under ordinary cyanide treatment, whereby a higher extraction was obtained in a shorter time. The main difficulty in the process was the easy manufacture of the bromo-cyanide solution, but this was eventually overcome. The mixed salts now supplied by the LondonHamburg Co. are in every way satisfactory, and are supplied at such a price that the process compares favourably with any other from a cost point of view.

Why go to the CIS? The vast mineral potential of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) has long been recognised, but it has taken the lowering of the iron curtain to open up the region to serious mineral development consideration by the Western World. The advent of a free market economy and the emergence of the Independent States with pressing needs for foreign investment has led to a greatly improved investment climate. Coupled with the desire for some of the more entrepreneurial resources companies to head the wave of investment to the region, this sequence of events has promised a great deal, but delivered only modest progress to-date. Potential gold project development has provided the major focus, for three reasons: the region is highly prospective for gold, gold projects tend to have a relatively lower start-up capital cost compared to base metal and fossil fuel projects and finally bullion or refined gold is more readily transportable and easier to sell.

The initial results for the cyanide leach gold recoveries were very poor on a high-grade primary sulphide ore of 6.2 g/t Au with no silver. Subsequent mineralogy showed the ore to be a characteristic pyrite, carbonaceous refractory gold ore (double refractory). This was a very disappointing finding. A small scale gravity and flotation test programme was developed to produce a concentrate with the majority of the gold. This also failed with most of the gold remaining in the tailings. An ICP scan also showed variable levels of antimony. A Desktop Study was undertaken with minimal laboratory test work looking at Pressure Oxidation (POX), roasting, ultra-fine grinding, graphite passivation and consideration of any new technologies that might be applicable to this type of ore. The subsequent Study highlighted how difficult these double refractory gold ores are to process and highlighted some recent technology developments may be applicable. CITATION: Connelly, D, 2018. Blast furnace slags which fall into the quaternary system SiO2 - A1203 - MgO - CaO have latent hydraulic properties which depend on the degree of vitrification. When the oxides com- bine to form Calcium Silicate Hydrates and other products of hydration the bonds between elements are at a lower energy level than those which exist in the glassy state. Transition from the glassy state to the crystalline state is thermo- dynamically favoured and, in the context of this paper, such slags possess internal energy. Manufacture of Portland cement is respon- sible for about 3.6 per cent of total industrial energy consumption in Canada. Pyroprocessing accounts for about 83 per cent of this figure or 3 per cent of the total. The processing of blast furnace slag to a condition in which it can be used as a partial substitute for Portland cement requires no pyroprocessing and, on average, only about 11 per cent of the energy needed for Portland cement. In North America the benefits of slag as a cementitious materials have been obscured by other considerations, the most important being commercial strategy. This situation has under- gone radical change as a result of the rising cost of energy, and government pressures to conserve energy.

Very little public domain information is available on the exploration signature of the Coronation Hill Au+Pd+Pt deposit. From 1987 to 1990 the BMR (now AGSO) carried out geological, geophysical and geochemical (whole-rock, stream, soil and rock chip) surveys within the South Alligator and Kakadu Conservation Zones and defined several key parameters useful for exploration programs. The essential geological ingredients for the style of Coronation Hill Au+Pd+Pt¦U deposit are oxidised, low pH fluids, dilatant fault structures, a thick neutral to oxidised cover sequence and chemical traps in the basement. In geophysical data, the areas surrounding the mineralisation can be detected by airborne magnetics as major lows in magnetite-rich rocks, whereas in airborne gamma-ray spectrometry data, imaged spectrometric channel ratios such as U2/I'h and U2/K highlighted alteration surrounding the deposits. Three types of stream-sediment and soil samples were taken from each site: (1) -1 mm mesh, 5 kg sample for bulk cyanide leach (BCL) analysis for Au, Pd, and Pt; (2) 1 kg sample of -1 mm mesh sediment for fire assay/ICPMS analysis for Au, Pt and Pd; and (3) 50 g - 180¦ mesh sample for a variety of trace element analyses, including Au, Pd and Pt. Techniques 2 and 3 gave similar results for Au, Pt and Pd, while the recovery rates for Pd and Pt from the BCL samples were considerably lower. Other trace elements did not define unique indicators for Pt or Pd mineralisation, as each sample reflected the dominant lithology in the drainage basin. Rock chip surveys were useful in determining which faults were associated with the ore fluid in regions of multiple fracturing. Results from these exploration-style surveys also confirmed that the Coronation Hill deposit is a variant of the unconformity-style of mineralisation, as all significant geochemical and/or geophysical results occur at or below the unconformity.

Hydrometallurgy has a history of over 300 years with copper leaching and cementation having been exploited in Spain as far back as 1670. Since then, hydrometallurgy has become an integral, expanding branch of extractive metallurgy. This paper reviews major developments in hydrometallurgy over the past century with emphasis on recent commercial developments and their impact on the mining and metals industries. The environment in which these developments has taken place has changed significantly in the past two decades and many factors, often non-technical, have emerged as constraints on the operation of existing plants and the expansion and development of new hydrometallurgical operations. Finally, a number of possible new developments that will shape the future of hydrometallurgy in the new millennium are discussed, particularly as they relate to the assimilation of technical advances in other areas of science and engineering. The impact of current trends in the education of hydrometallurgists and the provision of research in support of these future developments is also addressed.
