The Portia Au and North Portia Cu-Au-Mo prospects are located on a magnetic structure called the Benagerie Ridge Magnetic Complex, comprising varying pyrite-bearing Proterozoic albitite, phyllite and carbonaceous phyllite. The prospects are covered by up to 75 m of Cainozoic sediments, which comprise from top down, surface soils, Quaternary sediments, the Miocene Namba Formation and the (Late-Oligocene?) Portia Unit.The Portia Unit is dominantly clay-rich with local sand-rich base and it fills palaeo-topographic lows and a palaeo-valley that incised into the weathered basement rock (saprolite). This sedimentary unit hosts the majority of the Au grains found at Portia, with additional Au grains also present in the underlying saprolite. The North Portia prospect comprises saprolite hosted Cu-Au-Mo, with elevated concentrations of As-Pb-V present in the northern part of the prospect. These two groups of elements are delineated using factor analysis, and are regarded as the pathfinder elements for the North Portia mineralisation.Secondary Cu minerals including covellite and native Cu are present in the lower saprolite, and are stable under reducing conditions in the saturated zone.In the upper saprolite (unsaturated), Cu, Au, As, Mo and Pb are associated with Fe-oxides, mainly goethite and hematite. Saprolite leached of Fe generally contains low pathfinder elements concentrations.

"Flotation of nickel sulfide ores are generally constrained by nickel grade and impurity concentrations (notably magnesium and arsenic) in the product delivered to smelters. Being a physical separation process, flotation recoveries and grades are limited by the grade recovery curve of a particular operation, where increasing product grades are invariably associated with lower recoveries. Impurities put further pressure on this relationship, as removal of impurities from the final concentrate is almost always associated with nickel losses.Western Areas Ltd are developing a proposed expansion to its Cosmic Boy concentrator to treat an impurity stream, that is high in nickel and would otherwise report to tails. Through the use of BioHeap® technology Western Areas aims to recover the nickel and discard the arsenic to tailings. This expansion will consist of a biohydrometallurgical plant that leaches the nickel arsenic minerals, removing the arsenic as a stable iron/arsenic hydroxide, while recovering the nickel as a high-grade nickel sulfide product (at approximately 50 per cent nickel). This can then be blended with final concentrate to improve nickel grades and recoveries, while simultaneously reducing impurity levels or used to produce high value products like nickel sulfate.The introduction of a small microbial leach plant may be beneficial to base metal concentrators constrained by impurities or grade.Citation:Fewings, J, Seet, S, McCredden, T and Fitzmaurice, C, 2016. The drive to maximise performance, reduce maintenance times, improve safety of operation and maintenance on mining equipment while keeping both operational and capital costs down has provided good nourishment to the creative thinking of designers of skip loading facilities for hoisting systems. Early systems were as simple as manual loading which evolved into a surge bin feeding a skip through a chute finally maturing into a measuring flask discharging into a chute to feed the skip and more recently high capacity skip feed conveyors. This paper will compare the concepts of the skip loading flask and the skip loading conveyor systems over a range of winding distances and hoisted tonnages. The comparison will draw on actual installations and review operational, maintenance and safety. An order of magnitude capital cost estimate will be used to complete the financial comparison. This will enable the reader to understand the concepts and costs and assist in selecting the appropriate skip loading system.

In the fields of geotechnical engineering and slope management, various software packages are used to assess the behaviour or propensity for a slope to fail. Traditional kinematic analysis calculates the probability of failure of design sectors with respect to dominant structural set orientations. A novel methodology is provided here to view potential hazardous slope behaviour in 3D, allowing engineers to make informed decisions regarding various pit slope geometries. Apparent dips are calculated for every point in space with respect to every slope orientation of the entire pit surface/design, specifically in reference to bench and inter-ramp planar failure mechanisms. Implementing a proactive approach to slope design will not only lead to early mitigation of risk but can also add direct value by enhancing or improving upon slope angles for earlier access to ore. From a safety perspective, identification of unfavourably oriented slope geometries can be dealt with before failure occurs. This methodology relies on a strong understanding of the existing rock mass anisotropy, particularly behind the face, thereby removing some of the uncertainty surrounding pit design as well as presenting engineers with an additional means to manage risk.

The Wambo Rail Spur located near Singleton, New South Wales, Australia, runs for 14 km linking the Mt Thorley rail loop and running north-west alongside Jerrys Plain Road to the Wambo Coal Mine at Warkworth. A portion of the project is a 260 m long tunnel located where the rail line passes under Jerrys Plain Road. The tunnel has a low cover and is mostly within highly weathered to fresh laminated siltstone interbedded with coal seams, sandstone and conglomerate. This paper presents the design basis and construction methods used to achieve the 100 year design life of the tunnel required by Wambo Coal while also satisfying settlement and vibration limits imposed on Jerrys Plain Road.

Natural gas from the south west Queensland gas fields is now available in north west Queensland to fuel the development of many Carpentaria Mineral Province projects. Like these projects, the south west Queensland gas project, developed under the operatorship of Santos Ltd, has its own æMining CycleÆ. While the project is entering its third expansion phase, it is at the same time actively extending its discovery phase, with large programs of gas exploration and reserves definition. This paper outlines the history of the south west Queensland gas project, with particular emphasis on the relationship of the project to north west Queensland.

Traditionally, surface coal mines in the Western United States have been limited by economics to depths between 150 to 200 feet. Utah International Inc., however, is now planning to strip coal its San Juan Mine in Northwestern New Mexico to depths ranging up to 400 feet while uncovering 20 feet of steam coal. This method is cost-competitive with nearby shallower coal deposits and underground mining of the same property. How trucks and shovels can pre-strip for a dragline, along with results of the planning process, comparison with alternate systems, capital requirements, operating costs and comparisons with other coal sources are all detailed. Also discussed are the major problems anticipated, how they might be corrected, and potential improvements to the concept. Introduction The San Juan Deep Stripping Project will be situated at Utah International's San Jean Mine. The mine is in the Four Corners region, so-called because four states enjoy a common border point about 30 miles to the northwest.(see Figure 1). The area is a semi-arid plateau region with an average elevation of 5,200 feet, receiving an average of 6 inches of precipitation annually

Seismic systems are a tool for the monitoring and forecasting the rock mass response to excavation. Common issues encountered at mine site audits and reviews are: how to design an effective seismic system, implementation of the design, interpretation of seismic source results and understanding the reliability of the seismic source. These issues are often a function of several items including: • Experience of site personnel in undertaking seismic system design. • Personnel not envisioning multiple phases of system expansion to understand system robustness issues. • System design/expansion occurring in response to damaging seismic activity rather than planned expansion of a system • The mine access development is often localised in comparison to the total orebody being mined hence, planning sensors in longholes in advance of development rather than in short holes close to development will improve the three-dimensional aspect of the network. • Limited site processing of the seismic event data, hence engineers do not see the uncertainty associated with event location, size, source and system layout. Mine site users require a framework to appreciate the challenges and limitations in locating large events. For example, event locations are given as precise measurements (to the nearest centimetre) whereas the volume of deformation resulting in the event often has dimensions of tens of metres or more (as defined by the source radius). A stronger awareness of the uncertainty of rock mass yield within large seismic sources will assist site users in the interpretation of rock mass damage. The encountered design and implementation errors are reviewed and discussed with a practical set of rules presented to provide a robust seismic system that provides consistent results and increases the user’s understanding of uncertainty in source location and size. The authors’ experience across multiple mine sites, seismic systems and damaging seismic events over a 30 year period has been summarised into practical rules for site personnel of all experience levels.

The general types of industrial behaviour of liberated valuable sulfide minerals in the 0 - 10 ¦m size fraction are described and tests to explore on site at a concentrator the general nature of any deficient behaviour are discussed. In addition, the general types of behaviour of the gangue minerals in this size fraction are also described in terms of their mechanisms for recovery. These behaviours are also discussed in terms of the type of grinding device and grinding environment in which they were produced and the target grinding product size. Major recent improvements in the industrial capabilities of grinding devices are discussed.Present difficulties in characterisation of particles in the 0 - 10 ¦m range are described and desirable improvements for the future are outlined. Further, desirable improvements for industrial processing of valuable minerals in this size range are discussed along with some remedial actions.

This paper presents the development of a regrind facility design at BHP BillitonÆs Leinster Nickel Operations (LNO) in Western Australia. The recovery opportunity was identified from an analysis of plant operating data together with scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurements on relevant tailings streams from LNO. A laboratory procedure was developed to determine the potential recovery improvement of installing a regrind facility at LNO. The last step in formulating the process flow sheet and defining the process design criteria was to construct and operate a pilot plant, which incorporated four banks of flotation cells and an Xstrata M20 Isa Mill. Pilot plant on/off trials were used to define the expected metallurgical benefit. A prefeasibility engineering design and cost estimate was completed. Following a successful internal business evaluation, a feasibility study is currently underway.

In order to utilise the powerful thermodynamic databases for process simulations, a concept called Effective Equilibrium Reaction Zone (EERZ) was introduced to couple thermodynamic database calculations and reaction kinetics. Using the EERZ concept, many process simulation models for steelmaking processes have been developed within the FactSage steelmaking consortium. After validation of the simulation results by comparing with plant data, the simulation models have been applied to improve plant operations. Several success stories of the improvement of real steelmaking operations are shared. A new user-friendly FactProSim software developed for building process simulations is introduced.

The Apeketon Business Hub in Lihir, Papua New Guinea, emerged in 2019 through a partnership between Australian Business Volunteers (ABV) and Lihir Gold Limited (LGL), a subsidiary of Newmont Corporation. This development was driven by a shared vision for the Lihir gold mining operation to further enhance opportunities for the local community and strengthen the economy’s resilience post-mine. At its core, the business hub serves as the epicentre of ABV’s operations in the region. It includes a drop-in resource centre which provides the community with mentoring and consulting services, and access to a range of impactful workshops facilitated by ABV’s local staff and skilled volunteers. These workshops focus on local Lihirians but are open to the entire community, including Newmont employees. We design and continually refine Apeketon Business Hub support programs and offerings driven by community priorities, building trust through long-term relationships, and working side-by-side on real-time challenges. We offer three core programs to different levels of the community, from individuals and families to start-ups, large corporations, and landowner groups. There is significant demand for the support services provided by ABV, with over 350 Lihirians participating in our workshops over the 2023 calendar year. One of the hub’s core offerings is the Family Money Management Program, which addresses crucial challenges faced by Lihir households, particularly in terms of financial resilience. The program takes a comprehensive approach, assisting families in long-term planning and developing skills to effectively manage the income they derive from their employment with LGL and other enterprises. Significantly, the program also addresses financial stress, a factor often associated with domestic violence (Fox et al, 2002). By empowering women and promoting joint financial decision-making, the Family Money Management Program fosters a culture of savings and improved financial management, ultimately enhancing economic resilience within the community.

In the period since 1989 the Yabulu Nickel Refinery of Queensland Nickel has undergone a transformation both in terms of the nickel laterite ore feed and the refined nickel product. These two changes were mutually supporting, as will be shown in the following paper. It had been realised since the early-1980s that the Greenvale orebody would be exhausted by 1992. Consequently planning had been in progress throughout the 1980s for the importation of overseas ore as a replacement for the Greenvale ore. The existence of extensive lateritic ore deposits in New Caledonia and Indonesia made these locations the natural focus of attention. With the three Japanese ferronickel smelters sourcing their nickel garnierite ore feed from these locations it was relatively easy for the miners to supply the overlying limonite ore to Yabulu. This limonite ore was previously discarded as waste. The Yabulu refinery now receives about 85 per cent of its ore from these two overseas sources. The transition from Greenvale ore to imported ore occurred gradually between 1989 and 1993. It was during the ore importation planning stage of the mid 1980s that Queensland Nickel commenced the technical investigation which led to the ammoniacal solvent extraction (ASX) plant installation and the product change from nickel oxide to nickel metal.

The need to solve the problems associated with spontaneous combustion, system of ventil- ation and methane drainage in gassy coal mines has brought about the development of mining and degassing methods which has made possible up to 80% gas recovery in retreating longwalls. Beneficial results also were obtained mostly in the double or multiple-entry systems, but for single-entry systems and for a seam thickness exceeding 3 m, gas recovery rate is still very low. With some single-heading systems, such as those where a return roadway is not maintained in the goaf behind the face line, a new methane drainage technology is practiced. Attempts were made to extract methane from roof holes drilled from offsets in the ribside of the longwall block. The inclinations and lengths of the boreholes were planned and designed on the basis of the geological and mining condit- ions encountered at the time and every second hole was terminated precisely at the point where the previous hole intersected the immed- iate roof goaf area above the face. There are mathematical relations approp- riate to the design of the above drainage systems to give optimum methane recovery under the given conditions. Some examples of drainage have reached 87% recovery and have attained 94% CH4 purity.

Environmental compliance and mine designs are increasingly including assessment of flows and water qualities as a key driver to decision-making over life-of-mine. Integrated site-wide water quality models linked to dynamic water balances have been used for regulatory submissions, feasibility studies, operating mines and mine closure studies. These models, developed in GoldSim, link aqueous chemistry to the physical system of the site-wide water balance. Geochemical mechanisms included are determined from geochemical characterisation and site water monitoring, depending on the data availability at each site. External geochemical modelling using PHREEQC, version 2 (by D?L?Parkhurst and C?A?J?Appelo) and Geochemists Workbench (GWB), (by C?M?Bethke and The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois) identifies the most important geochemical processes to be included in the model as a series of geochemical mechanisms which include source term loading rates, pH-buffering and equilibration of water quality. Water balance components include seasonal flow variability; waste facility water storage and system lags; run-off variability; milling processes and tailings production as a function of ore types; simulation of automated and scheduled maintenance of settling ponds; water re-routing for water treatment and freshwater demand, usage and storage.Case studies illustrating the use of these models for regulatory submissions and mine feasibility studies in a variety of climatic and regulatory environments show the utility and applicability of these models. Site-specific examples of these models developed by Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd are currently used at operating mines across the world. One of the larger mines where this is used is a mature poly-metallic mine in South America where the model has aided mine managers in understanding how various planned initiatives and potential water options will result in changes to flows and water quality. It is used regularly to inform water and waste management to minimise impacts to the receiving environment as a consideration of both flows and concentrations. The mine has also used the model in support of water treatment design, regulatory submissions and mine closure planning.Further examples of feasibility and operational/compliance assessment in arid and strongly seasonal environments for planning, regulatory and closure consideration of mine wastes and pits have shown the utility and usefulness of these approaches for a range of mining operations at various stages of mine life.CITATION:Strand, R and Usher, B, ?2014. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Mineral exploration and mining are challenging businesses. Remote and at times harsh conditions have always made it difficult for exploration, but modern explorers also have to deal with cover, numerous technologies, an explosion of data and critical early community engagement. Mining deals with the reality of moving and breaking thousands of tonnes of rock each day to extract what can be a very minor component of economic value, and, furthermore, society expects that this will be done in a clean and sustainable manner. The exploration and mining challenges appear disparate, but they are intimately related.Although not widely appreciated, both exploration and mining have a long tradition of innovation. Over the last 50 years, major step changes in exploration have resulted from radical advances in our understanding of ore forming processes, new geophysical, geochemical and remote sensing technologies, and new ways to integrate and interrogate data. Over a more extended period, close to 100 years, mining has developed bulk surface and underground methods, selective extraction through flotation and leaching and global positioning system–geographic information system control systems that collectively facilitate mining at a massive scale. And yet, in spite of these successes and the boom that we have enjoyed in the last ten years, the industry is under pressure and the need for innovation and change is paramount.The major drivers for innovation are the need for increased quality in discoveries and mines and the need to interact effectively with communities and jurisdictions such that the benefits of quality mines are recognised and enjoyed widely.We are still making new discoveries around the Pacific Rim and elsewhere, but many argue that the quality – grade and accessibility – of these discoveries is decreasing. The net result is that explorers are delivering resources and reserves for development at lower grades and with higher capital and operating costs than current operations. For mining, the increasing age of many existing operations contributes to increasing costs, which, when combined with decreasing cut-offs and lower grades, also results in declining quality. The combined picture does not look good.Just as the pressure to improve performance and margins in the face of declining inputs increases, we are simultaneously faced with increasing societal demands for improved environmental performance and sustainable practices. This is most apparent at the local, community level, where opposition ultimately leads to delays or even cancellation of new projects. A critical aspect of geometallurgy is quantifying mineralogical and textural relationships that affect mineral processing (eg, liberation and recovery). However, to date, this has been an expensive and time consuming venture and only minimal amounts of this type of data are typically available to be included in the mine planning process. Our research is focused on developing methods that will produce the required mineralogical and textural data rapidly and inexpensively. New methods of characterising liberation potential from image analysis of coarse particulate material and direct small-scale flotation measurement are compared with measurement of liberation at final grind size (ie conventional tests on MLA). The new tests are designed to rank the liberation potential of samples in order to classify an ore deposit into domains of low, medium and high liberation potential. This parameter can then be used to adjust the cutoff used to differentiate ore from waste. Results to date show that all tests provide the same ranking for the samples. The measurement based on coarse particulate material compares favourably to the results from MLA analyses on the same samples. Further work is being carried out to determine which of the tests will be the most effective in terms of time, effort and cost

Transport infrastructure constitutes, since always, an essential link between regions, countries and continents, for economical, commercial and human purposes. Permanently growing mobility needs, which are encountered in the whole world, lead to a more and more clear necessity to increase and modernise these transport infrastructures, as well in quantity as in quality, for all transport modes, and for all what is able to be transported, from people to consumption goods and energy. With only very few exceptions, transport infrastructure achievements have for long been the concern of the sole public authorities, at the various levels, which put them, mostly free of charge or at very low cost, at the disposition of the user or the customer.

High-chromium vanadium-titanium magnetite has not been exploited and made full use of on a large scale so far due to the immature utilisation technology and the reality that the utilisation efficiency of valuable metals still urgently needs to be improved. In the present paper, the isothermal reduction kinetics and mechanism of high-chromium vanadium-titanium pellets were studied at 800–1100°C. The mineral composition transformation of pellets before and after reduction was analysed by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the microstructures were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) to reveal the elemental distributions. The effect of reduction temperature on the volumetric swelling degree and cold crushing strength was also studied. It was found that reduction temperature has a large effect on the reduction rate of pellets, and the increase in reduction rate is more obvious in the range 1000–1100°C than 800–1000°C. The volumetric swelling degree of pellets increased with increasing reduction temperature, while the cold crushing strength decreased. The transformation of mineral species can be expressed as Fe2O3 ? Fe3O4 ? FeO ? Fe, Fe2O3·3TiO2 ? Fe3O4· (2FeO·TiO2 ) ? 2FeO· TiO2 ? FeO·TiO2, (Fe0.6Cr0.4)2O3 ? FeO· Cr2O3 ? Cr2O3 , and Fe2O3· VO/V2O3 ? VO. The apparent activation energy of the reduction reaction was calculated to be 44.3 kJ/mol, and the reduction rate is controlled by the combined effect of interfacial chemical reaction and gas diffusion through the porous product layer. The rate controlling steps were further studied by calculating the resistance percentages. The interfacial chemical reaction was found to be predominant in the initial reduction stage, with the percentage effect of gas diffusion through the porous product layer gradually increasing during reduction.CITATION:Cheng, G J, Xue, X X, Liu, J X, Liu, Z G, Chu, M S, Jiang, T, Liu, B and Duan, P N, 2015.
