This paper reviews the historical data on relative height changes of landmasses with respect to sea level for Pacific Rim countries.It discusses existing theories of the Greenhouse effect, and the interaction with the vertical movements of the continental plates which leads to different effects for different places. Possible future scenarios are described and directions for future research and measurement programs are given.Relative sea levels are governed not only the increase of water from deglaciation but also by a range of other factors such as variable water storage in lakes and the atmosphere, thermal expansion of the ocean, ocean currents, and the shape of the ocean and the continents. Sea floor spreading, for example, is ultimately more significant than deglaciation in sea level control but is generally much slower.

Ventilation is part of all underground mine operations and is undertaken in order to introduce fresh, cool air to the workings and to remove stale, affected air. It is problematic to obtain efficient and accurate estimates of volume flow and static pressure in the installed operational configuration for the auxiliary axial flow fans.An empirical method was developed to estimate the static pressure and volume flow through a calibrated differential pressure port on axial flow fans. Prior to shipping, each fan is performance tested according to BS 848 (ISO 5801) to establish the fan performance curves. In addition to the standard required parameters captured to fully describe the performance, the differential pressure is measured across the fan rotor to enable correlation with the characteristic fan curve.The method was implemented on a ruggedised tablet PC platform. This compact platform is then used to calculate the volume flow rate from the differential pressure sensor measurement input via a USB port. The result is a real-time measurement of volume flow and operating point of the fan system. This can be used effectively in overall modelling of the mine auxiliary ventilation systems and calculation of system resistance could provide a health indication of the fan and duct system.CITATION:Ratner, G and Viviers, S, 2013. In the last eight years inclined conveyor haulage systems have established themselves in the mainstream for hard rock underground mine haulage. This leaves the question; what else might be on the horizon for mine haulage and how do we address the process of selecting haulage systems for new mines? This paper considers the identification of viable haulage technologies for underground mines and explores an approach for assessing existing and potential technologies. The example of a large deep mine is considered here. The evaluation of existing haulage systems relies on precedence and the assessment of the system capacity to meet the haulage requirements envisaged for a particular mining project. The assessment of potential technologies for mine haulage relies on the capacity to deliver a viable production-scale system within the timeline envisaged for developing a mining project. The haulage technologies addressed in this paper include: shaft hoisting,conveyor haulage,truck haulage,vertical conveyors, andhydraulic hoisting. This paper does not consider rail haulage out of a mine. This is simply because Australian topography typically has insufficient relief to bring them into consideration. However, rail haulage is a widely used and effective haulage solution in situations where significant topographical relief is present. The assessment of haulage system capability focuses on the following fundamental questions: How reliable are they? What is the degree of technical risk in a business context?What levels of flexibility do they offer?How capital effective are they? What returns are indicated by the balance of capital and operating cost estimates?

Successful heap leaching depends on three major factors: 1. Chemical conditions appropriate for the dissolution of the valuable metal; 2. Contact between the leach solution and the valuable metal particles; and 3. Movement of the leach solution through, and out of, the heap. Given that appropriate chemical conditions can be provided, and the individual particles have sufficient permeability to allow solute/solvent contact, the problem of getting the solution to and from the particles remains. Non-uniform percolation of solution throughout the heap, caused by the presence of fines, is a common problem which occurs, to some extent, with all heap leachable ore. The conventional solution to this problem is agglomeration, which involves the attachment of fine particles to larger particles, effectively modifying the size distribution by preventing the fine particles from acting on their own. While agglomeration must be considered as an extremely effective technique with virtually no limit to its application from a technical point of view, its application is limited by economic considerations. A new technique has been developed which is not only a low cost alternative to agglomeration, but also has the potential for enabling the application of low cost heap and vat leach techniques to a significantly wider range of ores than current practice would suggest. The new technique, known as Electrokinetic Leaching, utilises electro-osmotic flow to enhance percolation through the heap. This paper describes and presents results of the laboratory testing, pilot heap operation and commercial application of Electrokinetic Leaching of a low grade gold ore and a tailings deposit. Comparative cost analyses between conventional and the alternative processing techniques are presented.

In a recent publication (Bueno and Lane, 2011) the authors presented the analysis of a consolidated dataset composed by 137 autogenous/semi-autogenous grinding (AG/SAG) mill pilot trials. By comparing the measured data against theoretical specific energy consumption, the analysis indicated which circuit configurations were more or less energy efficient. However, the analysis has also indicated that the energy efficiency of each of the types of circuits vary significantly.There are numerous factors that contribute to the variations of energy efficiency of AG/SAG mill-based circuits, such as feed size distribution, recycle ratios and ore characteristics. In view of this, the present work accesses these factors individually and discusses what may lead a particular circuit configuration to be more or less efficient in terms of energy and costs.CITATION:Bueno, M and Lane, G, 2012. The problem of spontaneous heating/fire is very common in coal mines all over the world. The coal industry faces many problems day by day due to the occurrence of spontaneous heating in the open pit coal mines. Presently, about 70 per cent of total coal production in Indian mines is being carried out by open pit mining. Fire in coal, particularly in open pit mines not only causes irreparable loss of natural wealth but also damages the surface structures and pollutes the environment. It is well known that 75 per cent of the fires occur due to the spontaneous combustion of coal. Spontaneous heating is a very common occurrence in coal mines and is a major factor contributing to mine fire. The liability of coal to spontaneous heating causes many serious problems before, during and after mining. In opencast mines, coal immediately oxidises and catches fire due to the intrinsic characteristics of coal, such as low rank, high moisture, high volatile matter, presence of sulfur in the form of pyrites, low crossing point temperature (CPT) and ignition point temperature (IPT) value and less incubation period. In opencast mines, when the coal benches are left idle for a longer time, heat accumulation takes place in favourable conditions and sometimes leads to fire. The purpose of this paper is to present the different successful case studies regarding the safety management of open pit coal mines from occurrences of spontaneous heating/fire.

Gold Tellurides are important sources of gold at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, Cripple Creek, Colorado and Vatukoula, Fiji. Unlike free gold, the tellurides of gold are rather refractory and the usual treatment practice has been to oxidize the tellurides, either chemically or by roasting prior to cyanidation of the liberated free gold. There is a large measure of disagree- ment as to the actual cause of the refractory nature of gold tellurides. In order to investigate the leaching chemistry of gold telluride, a study was undertaken on the thermodynamics and kinetics of its dissolution using electrochemical methods. From this study suitable direct leaching condi- tions are suggested. In acidic chloride solutions gold telluride can be leached using iron(III) as the oxidant. At lower acid concentrations the reaction is controlled by the formation of a passivating film of H2TeO3. In alkaline solutions containing cyanide the rate of gold telluride dissolution increases with increasing pH and strength of oxidant. However, this can result in excessive consumption of cyanide in the presence of stronger oxidants.

AustraliaÆs current interest in renewable energy is based on a desire to reduce the countryÆs greenhouse gas emissions. Wood from sustainable sources offers a unique opportunity to combine greenhouse gas benefits with other significant environmental and social benefits, including salinity mitigation, carbon sequestration, soil replenishment and rural industry. The challenge is to make renewable energy from wood in a cost competitive manner, so that this broad range of benefits may be best realised. Bioenergy and carbon products are of great interest as new, commercial forestry products that can drive large-scale environmental tree planting:In Western Australia, Enecon has worked with Western Power Corporation to build the first full-scale plant for integrated processing of mallee eucalypts, to produce activated carbon, renewable power and eucalyptus oil. It is intended that this plant is the first of a number of such plants to help catalyse environmental tree planting in Western Australia. New technologies being developed overseas may provide competitive bioenergy in areas where traditional markets for wood do not exist. For example, pyrolysis converts wood into a bio-oil that may be transported to remote sites for power generation in gas turbines. Pyrolysis also produces wood char. Pyrolysis and wood-to-ethanol technologies, coupled with short rotation coppicing trees, offer the long-term prospect of large-scale production of renewable fuels around the country.

It is crucial to record ground movement of any magnitude to enable the safe and economical design of excavations and infrastructure. The DigiMine Laboratory is equipped with technologies to record such movements. This paper analyses the effectiveness of the Digital Mine instrumentation in recording earth movements in light of the Botswanan earthquake which occurred on the 3rd of April 2017 at 17:40 UTC. Recordings from the Digital Mine are compared with other ground sensing technologies which also captured the event (USGS and GEOFON systems). USGS and GEOFON system’s recordings suggest that, there are a number of possible mechanisms that could have resulted in the earthquake as discussed in the paper. Compared to the USGS and GEOFON systems, DigiMine system could not provide an analysis that could give possible source mechanisms. However, the system’s success in recording the Botswanan earthquake, is an indication that the system works and can be further developed or improved. For a comprehensive analysis, more data from various sensors needs to be collected. For example, DigiMine connecting to the national seismic monitoring system or to the local mine’s seismic monitoring system. Such connections will enable the development of a better self-analysis system and possibly prediction of future events. Across the globe, it is a common scenario that tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are being decommissioned; however, their subsequent impact on the local environment and landscape can often be overlooked during the mine planning process. In addition, the requirement of a cover system for a facilities closure may not be a priority until the latter stages of the mine/mill operation when potential cover materials may have been utilised elsewhere or, worse, buried. Developing a conceptual design and closure plan for a TSF early in a mining venture is fundamental to its success once operations have ceased. If a cover system is a planned component for rehabilitation of a TSF, it is vital that its design is appropriate to the facility and any local site constraints, such as climate and cover system material availability. It is also strongly recommended that various cover system options are physically trialled at the site by using performance-monitoring instrumentation. Through this process, an informed decision can be made regarding the most appropriate cover system design to meet any regulatory and stakeholder closure objectives and criteria specific to the site in question; however, in order for the cover system’s performance to be determined through on-site trials, it is essential that an appropriate instrumentation design is utilised. Often, little attention is paid to the data that is being obtained, and its importance may only become apparent after several years of monitoring at an expense to the venture. This should not be the case. Many sites have used an appropriate initial planning stage to understand what is required for the successful closure of a TSF, how it can be achieved and how monitoring data can be utilised to prove, or otherwise, that a cover system design will be a success.CITATION:Barritt, R and Scott, P, 2015. Australia has been slow in adopting the use of underground space as a part of our urban planning process. Australia has one of the highest levels of tunnel advance per capita per annum in the world, yet the use of underground space in our cities appears difficult for our planners and politicians to comprehend, not withstanding the general availability of good quality rock and contractor expertise in Australia. However, the lack of space in our urban areas is being highlighted as our major cities expand outwards and people and businesses gravitate towards city centres. Typical potential underground space uses include car parking, self-storage and archiving facilities, water storage, underground quarrying, small industrial facilities and another layer of traffic (electric and fuel cell) and services network. Historically, blasting in high density population areas has resulted in blast vibrations and blast overpressures exceeding the limits, which in some case have been set extremely low in terms of peak particle velocity (PPV). This makes conventional blasting difficult, often requiring low charge weights per delay and associated small blast sizes and slow advance rates. However, the introduction of new technologies, such as computer aided drilling, electronic delays and low-energy explosives has made this task considerably easier. Although more expensive than conventional blasting, excavation by blasting using these products and technologies in relatively good quality ground is believed, in most cases, to be less than the cost of mechanical excavation. In this paper, the authors look at innovative trends in underground quarrying, underground commercial space and tunnelling and put forward their concept of future excavation demand, future product requirements and technical specifications to the drill and blast community.

"The Coal Seam Gas (CSG) industry has seen a rapid increase in activity over a 30-year periodfrom the early 1990s within Australia. Despite public concerns over environmental issues, theCSG industry has increased in Queensland to the point where more than 90 per cent of naturalgas consumed in Queensland is CSG. The New South Wales (NSW) CSG industry has been slowerto respond for many reasons. Ninety-five per cent of natural gas consumed in NSW comes frominterstate. However, CSG activity in New South Wales is increasing notwithstanding publicconcerns. The CSG potential of three Petroleum Exploration Licenses (PELs) are being assessedwithin the Southern Sydney Basin that provides a unique opportunity to develop resourcesstrategically around many abandoned coal mines. The question has been asked - what do theseabandoned coal mines mean to the project? Are they good or bad? Are they friend or foe? Thispaper att empts to answer these questions and in doing so describes the coal mine ventilation andgas management philosophies and practices used to assess gas production potential. The coalmining philosophies not only have the potential to assist in the construction of a highly successfulCSG project, but they also potentially add signifi cant pre production value by re defi ning how theresources and reserves are assessed and therefore valued. The behaviour of abandoned coal minesand the goaves within the PELs are not well understood by the petroleum industry. However, in the Illawarra region there is an abundance of coal mining knowledge and expertise that if properly focused can greatly increase the chances of project success."

The metal production industry is a significant contributor to global CO2 emissions due to the use of fossil fuels such as coal and coke. To mitigate these emissions and meet climate goals, innovative and sustainable technologies are required. Molten salt electrolysis is a promising technology that directly produces metals from their precursor sulfides or oxides using electricity. When combined with renewable electricity and an inert anode, the electrolysis process can be carbon neutral. This paper presents the results of two pilot-scale studies on the electrolytic reduction of metal oxides and sulfides in molten salts. The first study focuses on the electrolytic reduction of chalcopyrite in molten NaCl-KCl salt. The results demonstrate that in situ separation of copper, iron, and sulfur is possible, enabling the extraction of all valuable elements without CO2 emissions. Furthermore, the findings underscore the capability to eliminate impurities like zinc, antimony, arsenic, and mercury from the electrolysis product. The second study investigates the electrolytic reduction of pure/synthetic chemicals of wüstite, hematite, and magnetite, as well as a magnetite-type iron ore in molten NaOH salt. The findings reveal a stepwise reduction of iron oxides from high valence to low valence, ultimately leading to the production of metallic iron electrolytically. Notably, this study underscores the challenges associated with the selection of an economically viable and durable inert anode material for efficient oxygen generation. These results indicate that molten salt electrolysis provides a sustainable and green route for base metal production. The use of this technology has the potential to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in the metal production industry, contributing to achieving climate goals.

Measuring cyanide in the leach liquors associated with high copper and/or sulfide ores is a non-trivial exercise. It is well known that copper complexes with cyanide and reduces the amount of cyanide available for gold leaching. What is not so well known is that the rhodanine end point overestimates the amount of cyanide available for leaching in the presence of copper. Sulfide ions also interfere with a rhodanine end point titration, although this is less of a problem as the black silver sulfide precipitate formed clearly indicates to the operator that something is wrong. Thiosulfate, which forms readily from the alkaline oxidation of sulfides, causes an overestimation of the cyanide available for leaching due to the formation of Ag(S2O3)-. The net result of these observations is that rhodanine is rarely of value as an end point indicator in complex solutions. It generally overestimates the amount of cyanide available, providing plant metallurgists with a false sense of security. Potentiometric titrations are generally much more capable of accurately measuring cyanide in complex solutions. The interfering effect of copper can be resolved and it is even possible to estimate the copper concentration using the inflexions associated with the titration of CN- + Cu(CN)43- versus Cu(CN)32-. Using the potentiometric method sulfide ions can be determined before the cyanide measurement is made due to the formation of AgS2, although the electrode will foul with repeated measurements. Thiosulfate can also be distinguished from cyanide with a potentiometric titration. Rhodanine and potentiometric titrations are both affected by the pH of the liquor. At pH 9.2 half the cyanide will be present as CN- and half as HCN(aq) with only the CN- being titratable. This does not hold in the presence of a buffer active around pH 9. In the presence of sufficient buffer, both the CN- and HCN(aq) are titrated. Ca(OH)+ may buffer the pH when large amounts of lime have been added.

The Sundance gold mine, located 2.5 km east of the town of Batchelor in the Northern Territiory, has produced over 5300 oz of gold since it was discovered in 1978. Sundance is unique in the Pine Creek Inlier in that the ore is hosted in palaeo-karst detritus and crystalline magnesite of the Early Proterozoic Coomalie Dolomite. This paper presents a summary of the geology of the mine, and describes the methods used during the two periods of mining.

The anticipated economic life of the mine, which defines the rate of mine production, is dictated initially by the design capacity of the mill/concentrator and the production capacity of the mine relative to the grade and tonnage of ore that can be encompassed by the pit design. A small pit will result in smaller investment and cash flow; in contrast, a larger size of pit will increase capital investment and annual revenue. Since open pit mine design and long-term production sequencing are essentially based on three-dimensional block models, changes in block dimensions leads to different mine sizes, and therefore changes in the mine life. The physical characteristics of the deposit, such as reserve tonnage and ore grade, affect the expected future revenues from the mining project, and consequently they affect the life of the mine. Large blocks will increase the recoverable ore reserves and production rates and hence increase the mine life. This paper discusses the effects of the block dimension on the commercial ore reserve, grade-tonnage curve and its effect on the production rate, ultimate pit size, mining cost and consequently the mine life. The result shows that block height is the most effective parameter governing the economical life of the mine.

The Australian lead-zinc industry faces a future in which the world market is likely to show at best only minimal growth and in which there will be increasing competition. Its production facilities use mature technologies employing expensive labour and increasingly costly energy in a country which demands the highest standards of environmental performance. Returns on investment are already unsatisfactory.Technology for survival would appear to indicate a need not only for more efficient capital, labour and energy usage combined with improved environmental performance, but also flexibility to handle more complex materials than the traditional, virtually single metal concentrates. This offers the potential for improved overall economics from the mine onwards, but will demand efficient separation and by-product recovery processes.In the lead industry these problems are being addressed in several emerging technologies. With zinc, the situation is less clear.
