Improving liquid blending operations in production plants is of paramount importance in many industries like mining, oils, petrochemicals and food. For accurate blending of different types of process streams, like homogeneous, heterogeneous, cold or hot streams, it is essential that the composition can be accurately monitored in real time. Advances in energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) technology offers the possibility to apply XRF for online elemental analysis. In this paper we discuss an online EDXRF analyser for accurate blending control in many industries.EDXRF has the advantage that multiple elements can be measured simultaneously over a wide concentration range of wt per cent down to a few mg/kg, for elements between sodium (Na) and americium (Am) in the periodic table. To reach the desired accuracy and precision in an online XRF analyser, it is important to bring a representative and homogeneous sample of the process flow into the optical path of the analyser. The combination of a laminar flow cell design and advanced EDXRF technology leads to low detection limits and high performance. The obtained precision and accuracy allows for much tighter process control. Ore samples from the South, Central and North ore-bodies of the King Cassilis Mine, near Omeo, Victoria, were broken and transported to Melbourne for experimental metallurgical treatment. A microscopical examination of individual unoxidised specimens, selected from these samples, was undertaken in order to thro'w as much light as possible on the occurrence of the gold which forms the valuable economic mineral in the ore.The following descriptions are the outcome' of this examination and show that very minute particles of free gold are mechanically associated with the sulphides. While the gold may be separated from the transparent gangue minerals by the flotation of the sulphides, the, actual size of the particles indicates that it is impossible to separate all the gold from the sulphides by grinding the ore to pass through a screen of 200 mesh in which the average width of the holes is 0.063 mm. The role played by lawyers in business has, in the course of the last 15 to 20 years, changed perceptively. This development has coincided with, and indeed has been a reflection of, the changing nature of Australian business, especially as the mining industry established its predominance in the Australian economy. The nature and extent of governmental regulation of business, too, has changed markedly. As a consequence, there has been a qualitative'change in the nature of commercial law practice. For the needs of business to be met, lawyers have had to develop specialist skills in new areas. Furthermore, there has been the emergence of the "in-house" lawyer, who increasingly plays a primary rather than a subordinate role in corporate law practice. There is no evidence to suggest that this trend, which is by now so well established, will prove to be ephemeral. Instead, with all indications pointing towards even greater governmental regulation of business activities, the intimate role of the lawyer in business seems entrenched.

The Gold Fields Cerro Corona copper-gold deposit in Peru has heterogeneous rock characteristics in terms of its mineralogical, geological and geotechnical properties. Blast design variations in these conditions directly impact the run-of-mine (ROM) fragmentation, which in turn influences downstream process efficiencies. In particular, when harder ore is processed, throughput and circuit performance may be limited.To evaluate the potential to increase throughput and improve overall plant performance by optimising blasting practices and comminution circuit operation, Gold Fields La Cima engaged Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) to conduct a full process integration and optimisation project at Cerro Corona. Blasting, crushing and grinding processes were reviewed to identify the potential to achieve substantial improvements in productivity when treating the most competent ore types.Site-specific models of the blasting, crushing and milling processes were developed using SmartTagTM ore tracking technology for calibration and validation. Ore tracking permitted locations in the blast volume to be queried against the geotechnical block model to determine the hardness and structural parameters of the feed to the comminution circuit. They also ensured surveys were conducted when ore from the audit blast was flowing through the crushing and grinding circuits.The predictive models developed enabled PTI to demonstrate how changes in blast design influenced both ROM fragmentation and the performance of downstream comminution processes. Outcomes of the project suggested changes to blast designs and comminution practices, and these were partially implemented for a validation trial. The trial demonstrated a 14.8 per cent increase in mill throughput for the specific ore selected for the study, and an average increase of 5.7 per cent for all ore types. There is potential to further increase throughput and process performance if all recommendations are implemented. The recycling of process water comes with increased electrolyte concentrations that affect water quality, which may in turn affect the flotation performance of valuable minerals (Hirajima et al, 2016). Electrolytes such as Ca2+, SO4 2- , Mg2+ and S2O3 2- have been surmised to have an impact on the action of flotation reagents such as collectors (Ikumapayi et al, 2012). Xanthate collectors are known to play a significant role in imparting hydrophobicity on mineral surfaces to enhance their flotation. The interaction between minerals and xanthates is well known to be electrochemical in nature. Such redox processes may be elucidated by electrochemical techniques. Since the mechanisms involving the interactions between electrolytes in process water with sulfide minerals and the subsequent adsorption kinetics of collectors are not well understood, this study therefore aims to provide fundamental knowledge to unpack the mechanisms involved when electrolytes interact with Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) and how these interactions may affect xanthate adsorption. The interaction of sodium iso-butyl xanthate (SIBX) in the presence of electrolytes at increasing ionic strength was investigated by rest potential measurements, to explain the impact of electrolytes on the adsorption of SIBX on PGMs in the flotation process. Rest potential measurements for PdTe2 and PdS were conducted in an air saturated 0.05 M di-sodium tetraborate decahydrate solution, in the absence and presence of SIBX and electrolytes. It was found that the existence of sulfide and telluride on palladium affects the mechanisms in which electrolytes interact with Pd mineral surfaces. An increase in the ionic strength of Na2S2O3, CaCl2 and MgCl2, increased the interaction between the salts and PdS, thus decreasing the extent to which SIBX interacted with PdS. An increase in ionic strength for Na2S2O3 increased the interaction between Na2S2O3 and PdTe2 and therefore decreased the extent to which SIBX interacted with PdTe2. Other salts investigated in this study increased the rate of oxidation of PdTe2 with an increase in ionic strength thereby enhancing the interaction of SIBX and PdTe2. This study has shown that mineral type, electrolyte type and concentration all have an impact on the mechanisms that result in the adsorption of SIBX on PGMs.

The Big Bend and Cobra molybdenum prospects which occur near the margin of the Karamea Batholith in the Northwest Nelson molybdenum province are compared. The Big Bend Prospect is a 3000 m by 800 m area of disseminated pyrite and anomalous molybdenum associated with Cretaceous porphyry intrusives and later argillic and potassic alteration within Ordovician schists and phyllites adjacent to the batholith margin. The Cobra Prospect is a 1200 m by 1200 m area of weakly disseminated pyrite mineralisation and anomalous molybdenum-in-rock associated with moderate to strong quartz-molybdenite and quartz-orthoclase-molybdenite veining in quartzite.

The behaviour of cationic and anionic collector mixtures in the feldspar-quartz flotation system has been investigated througl conductivity, surface tension, zeta-potential and flotation studies. Tht results show the formation of molecular complexes between oppositel; charged collector ions through charge neutralisation. The molecular complexes are found to have a higher surface activity than the individua components. The mole ratio of the mixed composition is found to have, significant effect on flotation. Primay (syngenetic and protogenetic) inclusions - i.e. minerals formed during or before diamond growth and encapsulated in the diamond - provide important information on the origin of diamond. Recent Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd dating of such inclusions has yielded crystallization ages older than their volcanic host, implying that diamonds are mantle xenocrysts. In this paper we report results of studies on the nature of syngenetic inclusions and the carbon isotopic compositons of the host diamond from the West Australian diamond deposits at Argyle and Elllendale. Several mineral resources have been recognised to alkaline igneous rocks. In general, these mineralisations present low P grades, so a complex concentration process is required to achieve commercial grade concentrates. This process is guided not only by the ore characteristics, such as apatite grain size and liberation degree, gangue minerals and slimes content, but also by different apatite varieties, iron oxi-hydroxide surface coating and roughness. The main techniques applied to apatite and phosphate ore characterisation, such as optical microscopy, cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), surface techniques and magnetic separation are discussed, aiming to evaluate distinct apatite varieties and their technological behaviour.

The Lady Loretta lead-zinc-silver mineral isation of north-west Queensland was discovered first by Placer geologists in 1968 as a result of a geochemical soil survey. The stratigraphic position, mineralisation and rock associations of the deposit are very similar to those of the Mount Isa lead-zinc-silver orebodies. Aspects of the exploration history, geo- chemistry and structural geology of the Lady Loretta deposit, are discussed. A geometric model of the Ore Horizon is given.

A vehicle proximity warning system is being developed using GPS and wireless local area networks to improve safety of off-highway trucks in open pit mines. After two an a half years of research, software development, and laboratory testing, field tests were carried out at operating limestone quarries and open pit mining operations to evaluate GPS accuracy and overall system effectiveness under rugged operating conditions. This article describes the progress made on this NIOSH funded project and discusses the GPS accuracy tests and overall system tests that were carried out during 2001 at the Morenci open pit copper mine in Arizona.

Recent events have raised the issue of whether, and if so when and how, an explorer may gather data from a mining tenement or permit which is held under the relevant mining Act by another party. Two situations arise: that of the small operator who wishes to prospect, and if successful mark off, ground held by others by virtue of the local form of exploration permit; and that of a regional explorer who may wish to enter on to some one else's existing mining tenement within the region of interest. The legal situation varies from state to state. At present the broad consensus seems to be that, provided consent is given, small-scale prospecting on another's exploration permit is at least tolerated if not actually provided for by the relevant Act. Entry onto a granted tenement to carry out any form of exploration is, however, prohibited in all jurisdictions unless consent is given. Furthermore it would appear that the proposal and conclusion of a joint venture agreement places certain obligations upon the party proposing to carry out exploration. These conclusions apply where ground surveys are proposed. Where data acquisition is by aerial survey the situation is much less clear, principally it would appear, because up to now little thought has been given to it. If trespass applies at ground level, at what height does it cease to apply? Can aerial magnetometry or photography be classified as prospecting? Is there an obligation upon public authorities who carry out remote sensing to make data available to the holders of mining tenements within the surveyed areas? Moves are now afoot to address these and other considerations, and it would be in the interests of everyone if a national approach to the problem could be adopted from the beginning. Certain suggestions in this respect are put forward.

More than 200 bursts in coal occurred at Leichhardt Colliery prior to December 1978 during mine development in the 6 m thick Gemini seam at depths approximating 400 m. Three large bursts each displaced more than 300 tonnes of coal and stone. Two of these which occurred in continuous miner developments, are described and compared. Geological settings, mining strains including induced cleavage and roof failures associated with bursts are described. A shotfiring technique replaced mechanised mining following a major incident at the colliery. Present mining procedures, the apparent improvement in stability of workings and ongoing geotechnical monitoring programme are discussed.

Favona is a blind low-sulfidation epithermal vein deposit in the Waihi Vein System approximately two kilometres east of the world class Martha Hill deposit that has produced nearly 6.8 M oz Au to date. The Favona epithermal system has surface expression in variously altered and mineralised hydrothermal eruption breccias forming a series of low hills that are windows through post mineral dacites and ignimbrites. The tip line of the Favona vein is about 50 û 100 m below surface with a steeply east dipping principal vein structure carrying numerous hanging wall splays in the upper flatter section and thickening down dip where the vein steepens. Host rocks comprise feldspar phyric andesite flows with minor pyroclastics. Although Favona has a strike length in excess of 1000 m and vein widths up to 25 m over a vertical range in excess of 400 m it was only recently discovered after nearly thirty years of exploration by various companies involved in the Martha Hill joint venture that operates the Martha Mine. Since discovery in 2001 a feasibility study based on 27.5 km of diamond drilling in 83 holes has been completed reporting a reserve of 1 Mt @ 10 g/t Au against a resource of 1.8 Mt @ 10.3 g/t Au. Exploration is continuing with a further 20.5km of diamond drilling completed to date on nearby prospects.

Australia has a large resource of manganese at BHP's Groote Eylandt mine which has been progressively developed over the last two decades. While much of the product is marketed internationally to the iron and steel industry, substantial quantities are processed in Australia at the Company's ferro alloy works in Tasmania. In addition, small but increasing quantities of ore are being consumed by the non-metallurgical industry. Fluctuating fortunes in the steel industry produce similar trends in the marketing of manganese. The increasing cost of freight and power together with strict environmental control is further affecting the market balance. Mine operators are expanding into the alloy making field. Reduction in usage in less developed countries is occurring.

A pilot plant study has been made of the liberation characteristics of a nickel ore under different milling conditions. A series of runs were made ranging from fully autogenous grinding to semi-autogenous grinding with a ball load of 8%. The mill products were sized and assayed then analysed by QEM4SEM. This enabled a full liberation analysis to be carried out to see whether the autogenous grinding leads to improved liberation by promoting selective breakage. Though it is frequently claimed that fully autogenous grinding yields superior liberation this could not be detected in the present study.

A number of gold processing plants in Western Australia have nickel in their ores, leading to significant levels of nickel on their loaded carbon. The presence of nickel during leaching, adsorption and elution'may have detrimental effects on cyanide consumption, carbon inventory requirements, stripping costs, electrowinning efficiencies and may contaminate the gold bullion.This paper discusses the competitive adsorption of gold and nickel cyanides onto activated carbon and investigates changes in solution parameters that may improve gold adsorption and/or inhibit nickel adsorotion.

The Cambrian structure in the Mt Read Volcanics was produced by four deformational events: obduction of forearc-derived mafic/ultramalic complexes in the early Middle Cambrian, a middle Middle Cambrian extensional phase related to the post-collisional Mt Read volcanism and VHMS mineralisation, Middle Cambrian E-W folding, and Late Cambrian N-S folding and basin inversion. The major phase of VHMS mineralisation in western Tasmania is restricted to the very brief period of extensional tectonics within the middle Middle Cambrian. Within this period a N-S graben was produced with a complex series of transfer zones, largely striking E-W. Most VHMS mineralisation is restricted to the top of massive volcanic successions, with several mines close to Cambrian transfer structures. Many of the transfer structures continued to be active until the Devonian. The later compressional Cambrian events are not significant in localising orc formation. Within the Rosebery mine a complex pattern of minor Cambrian normal faults has a second order control on the distribution of the mineralisation.
