The copper ore reserves at the Chuquicamata mine were re-estimated during March to June 1994, as part of a comprehensive audit of the mine's overall short- and long-term planning. The basic principles essential to all ore reserve estimates were implemented viz: 1. A detailed study of the geology, in this case particularly of the orientations of structural features of copper mineralisation and the subdivision of the orebody into geologically homogeneous sections, 2. the use of both drillhole and blasthole data sets, 3. statistical and geostatistical analyses of both data sets to model anisotropic spatial structures for all the geologically homogeneous sections, 4. block kriging using both data sets individually; and 5. a comprehensive validation of the block valuations to confirm the absence of global and conditional biases and to quantify the actual improvement achieved in the overall quality of the estimates compared to those executed on earlier techniques.

Historically mining engineers haven't spent enough time planning waste dumps, but waste movement costs often outweigh ore haulage costs. There is a real incentive to plan waste dumps right the first time to minimise rehandle and final closure costs. At BHP Billiton Iron Ore there has been an increasing sophistication in waste dump design and they are becoming as important as the pit design. Closure landforms are now included in mining studies. Closure is embedded in the business planning cycle. The results from the recent life of mine study at Whaleback is a case in point where a base case of the shortest hauls with no closure constraints was compared against a closure case. A properly planned and executed waste plan revealed that no rehandle was required and haulage costs were eight per cent less if closure design implementation was carried out concurrent with mining. At cessation of mining the landforms were such that decommissioning of critical acid rock drainage dams and coverage of exposed pyrite areas could occur straight away, without the need for additional rehandle.  The paper also covers design and scheduling elements of waste design both in-pit and ex-pit, management of potentially acid forming material (PAF) and trends in PAF management and designing for final landform closure. This paper illustrates that there is value in terms of costs savings, sustainable outcomes and reputation if the mine planners are involved in the closure planning process.

The diverse nature of inadvertent mine fires does not lend them to general treatment. But evolving from the unfortunate fires over past years is a simple principle in dealing with all fires to bring combustion under control. Control, in brief, means that the products of combustion, themselves possibly still with fuel values, are not revitalised by addition of fresh air. There are problems with fire- fighting, especially with water, as this may lead to production of CO and H2. Panel ventilation upstream of the fire must be controlled to direct all air over the fire. Some advantages in fire fighting are found by the use of "sails". Early diagnosis of fires and early treatment are essential for safety of personnel and safeguarding and recovery of property. Preparedness extends to up to date documentation, but first hand knowledge also is invaluable to the diverse personnel gathered to fight a fire, and in the decision making Involved.

This paper discusses the dewatering strategy adopted and the considerations and procedures required to incorporate a dewaterinq scheme into the Mt Whaleback mining operation. It concludes that in pit pre-dewaterinq has successfully allowed mining to progress below the standing water level with the minimum of disruption or radical change to the mining method. It is recognised however, that dewatering is not a static activity and there is a requirement for ongoing investigations and development. Pre-dewatering commenced in October, 1984. Purpose designed pumping trailers have been employed to minimise the loss of pump availability resulting from the frequent. need to remove and reinstall pumps when close vicinity blasts occur. To July, 1986, some 0.5 Mm' of groundwater had been pumped from the unconfined orebody aquifer. Mining has progressed to some 20 m below the standing water level without. any undue water associated problems. Ultimately, it is ,cheduled to extend some 300 in below the original water level in the West Pit. With the development of an increasing area of the mine below the standing water level, the influence of seasonal high intensity rainfall events, which had previously caused little concern, now need to be addressed. Mining of the massive complex sulphides orebodies of Campo Pisano and San Benedetto (Southern Sardinia, Italy), dates back to before Christ, though their exploitation with modern technology was only resumed in the middle of the last century. The increasingly adverse economic conditions and the weakness of both country rock and mineralization were concurrent in forcing the Company's management to develop suitable high-productivity stoping methods. In the framework of a project fi- nanced in part by the Commission of the European Coranunities, and carried out in cooperation with the Universities of Cagliari (Italy) and Clausthal (Germany), a cemented backfill stoping method was developed. The concrete mix preparation and placement facil- ities, study of the cement mixes and endeavaa-s to optimize the methods are described. The monitoring system for measuring stress evolution within the emplaced backfill is illustrated together with the successful replacement of part of the Portland cement

In order to understand the technique, basic theoretical principles of radiation emission and in- strumentation theory are reviewed. Methods of surveying, reduction of data and interpretation are outlined. Other applications of the technique (e.g. in airborne geological mapping), as well as its specific use in uranium exploration, are discussed. By means of case history-type examples the successful applicant of gamma-ray spectrometry, as a tool in Australian mineral search, is demonstrated.

Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited have recently commissioned a 14 Megawatt power station adjacent to its underground coal mining operation at Appin NSW. The power station is fuelled by methane gas extracted from the coal seams 500 metres below the surface. The methane is compressed and cooled prior to its injection into the combustor of a single shaft gas turbine. The turbine is coupled through a reduction gearbox to an alternator. There is sufficient power generated to cover colliery load, with any excess being exported to Prospect County Council, which is the supply authority for the south western region of Sydney.

This paper describes the design of the precast concrete segmental lining for the 13.1 m internal diameter and 450 mm thick, 2.4 km long mainline tunnels for the Waterview Connection project in Auckland for the New Zealand Transport Agency.The design and detailing of this segmental lining presented some noteworthy challenges, including an alignment that has sections of low cover in soft ground. Key points of interest are that this precast segmental lining is the largest to ever include steel fibres as the primary method of reinforcement and the lining includes cams on circumferential joints to control ring deformation.The paper describes some of the key design decisions that were made in a collaborative manner with the construction team, tunnel boring machine manufacturer, segment manufacturer and the designers.CITATION:Mahajan, R, Kuras, A and Pradhan, S, 2014. Waste blasting in iron ore operations can pose a number of technical challenges, including blasting through variable geology and blasting soft ground in wet conditions. Blast patterns are designed to be loaded with a specific range of explosives with unique characteristics and properties. Each explosive product will produce an optimal blast outcome for a given set of blast parameters and ground conditions. Sites characterised by softer rock typically require low-density, low-energy explosives. Historically, these products have contained a high ratio of porous ammonium nitrate prill and are only suitable for dry blastholes. When blastholes within a pattern are found to be unsuitable for such explosives due to wet, damp or muddy blasthole conditions, a new product is selected. While it is easy to switch products to match blasthole conditions, the different properties of the new non-ideal product can impact blast performance and increase loading times and costs.Flexigel™ is a solids-sensitised emulsion blend suitable for loading at variable densities and energies in dry, damp, muddy or wet blastholes. It is a universal product that can be loaded to match ground and blasthole conditions or complement other explosive products.At Fortescue Metals Group’s Cloudbreak site, Flexigel™ was trialled through a series of matched pair blasts in order to optimise blast outcomes in conditions that were non-ideal for existing explosive products and to reduce the overall cost of drill and blast operations. Flexigel™ yielded improved instantaneous dig rates and improved loading efficiency when compared to a traditional emulsion blend. The results also indicated that variable-density and variable-energy products afford greater flexibility for optimising blast outcomes across all ground and blasthole conditions trialled.Trials of Flexigel™ at Cloudbreak have shown that a variable-density solution is available for conditions where traditional explosive products are non-ideal. Energetics has been in the business of climate change for more than twenty years. This experience has only served to cement the understanding that decisions taken during design define the environmental and economic performance of any project. The 80-20 rule definitely applies, with 80% of a project’s performance being set through the first 20% of design decisions. This in depth knowledge is used for determining energy price forecasts, future carbon markets and carbon costs, current and future energy technologies, as well as giving a thorough understanding of the processes and technologies in place in the mining industry to work out what the most carbon and energy sensitive decisions during design are. Project selection and design is a gated process where decisions are taken in line with the information available at that point in the evolution of the project. Design decisions are, by their nature, dominated by uncertainty. In order to ensure that robust decisions are taken, it is necessary to ensure that the correct information is brought to bear at the correct decision point. This then defines and supplies the necessary carbon and energy information for design decisions to be correctly made. One of the most significant risks facing design engineers and decision makers in the mining industry is the future cost of energy. Part of this risk is associated with a future cost of carbon, however, a significant part of this risk is the cost, and variability in this cost, of the energy itself. This paper investigates the information required to support good decision taking during the design process.Project Managers and MetPlant Operators accept poor quality evaluations because they are generally unaware of what they should expect.The 2010 draft AusIMM ‘Guidelines for Techno-Economic Evaluations’ were collated by a subcommittee of practitioners and are regarded as best practice.They apply directly to projects and metallurgical plant evaluations, including those with a heavy technical basis. They can be applied to technical problem solving where there are no monetary computations.Project Managers and MetPlant Operators should demand that economic models and evaluations follow the six principles. They should become working tools which are easy to understand, fit for purpose, consistent, rigorous, record sources of input data, have key graphs and are rapid to audit.

Resource characterisation is critical for informed decisions in both strategic and operational space. The sources of information for resource characterisation are limited by: direct measurement of resource attributes, such as grades, rock-types, mineralogy, and are available only from sparse locations, ie drill holes; or indirect geophysical measurements such as seismic, gravity or electro[1]magnetic survey. Data collection tools, methods, and processing technologies are constantly improving providing a broad spectrum of options for data collection strategies. The cost of each data survey varies from thousands to millions of dollars with the value of each additional data having diminishing return for a particular business decision. The value of information analysis provides the optimal decision on data collection strategy within a limited available budget. This work presents an example of value of information analysis for new Blast Hole Assay Tool (BHAT) and Reverse Circulation Grade Control (RCGC) data used in addition to the wider spaced exploration data. The value of information is quantified in terms of reduction of grade uncertainty, ore loss and dilution by comparing different combinations of data collection methods. Four different strategies were considered: exploration samples in addition to 50 per cent of blastholes surveyed with BHAT, exploration samples in addition to 33 per cent of blastholes surveyed with BHAT, exploration with wide-spaced RCGC data, and exploration without additional grade control. For each strategy the observed values have been simulated using advanced multivariate geostatistical simulations and compared with simulated ground truth models. The calculated uncertainty, ore loss and dilution informed the optimal data collection strategy. Opportunity to reduce sample density from the nominal 50 per cent of drill holes was evaluated.

Minera Alumbrera Limited operates the Alumbrera concentrator, treating a nominal 80 000 tpd of porphyry gold/copper ore. It is located in Argentina, 1200 km north-west of Buenos Aires in Catamarca Province, at an elevation of 2550 m above sea level. Treatment facilities consist of crushing, SAG and primary ball mill grinding circuits, rougher flotation, ball mill regrinding, gravity recovery and cleaner flotation. It is one of only a small number of concentrators in the world, which uses Jameson Cells alone for cleaner circuit flotation. Plant design was started in June 1995, with commissioning commencing in July 1997. Following a successful ramping up to design tonnages and recoveries, a number of options were reviewed to improve gold and copper recoveries. This paper concentrates on a detailed size by size flotation recovery project, commenced in May 1999. Utilising optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and analysis of surface chemistry it has allowed losses by size fraction to be quantified and options for enhanced recoveries to be developed. Coupled with extensive circuit surveys it has also provided an insight into previously unknown properties of Jameson Cell operation. Among these are unique residence time and bubble formation reactions to reagent and pulp flow variations, which has permitted a number of novel changes to the operation to maximise capacity and recovery.

The blasting process involves a complex interaction of a delayed sequence of moving sources of seismic energy which produce nonlinear behaviour near the blast holes. A deterministic description of this nonlinear behaviour represents a formidable problem. The modelling of blast vibrations remote from the blast source may use some of the primary features of the blast design such as charge type, charge weight and initiation sequence. Such modelling of blast vibrations usually assumes linear behaviour remote from the blast holes. Site specific charge weight scaling laws may be used to predict the blast vibration levels with relatively poor accuracy. An important ingredient which is missing from charge weight scaling laws is the seismic source wavelet emanating from each blast hole. The present paper considers some approaches which may be used to determine a suitable source wavelet. The wavelets are suitable for use in the region where linearity may be assumed. In that region, it is possible to model the attenuation and scattering of the seismic wave as it propagates from the blast source to the measurement location.

Fortescue Metals Group flagship operation, Cloudbreak, is located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The mine is capable of delivering an annualised production rate of 40 Mt/a. Positioned 50 km to the east of Cloudbreak is Fortescue’s Christmas Creek operation, which has a combined processing capacity in excess of 50 Mt/a. Following on from these successes, Fortescue advanced development of its western Pilbara mines at the 60 Mt/a Solomon Hub. These processing installations place Fortescue in a strong position to deliver on a guidance of between 155–160 Mt/a for financial year 2014/2015.As Fortescue enters a phase of asset consolidation and debt repayment over expansion, the business is commanding stronger performance through enhanced plant operating practices and mine site cost reduction initiatives. To this end, the strategic placement of instrumentation is an area being given greater consideration. Access to real-time information pertaining to conveyed materials is of major interest to operators for making timely process control decisions. Fortescue has recognised the importance of accurate and up-to-date process information about their ores and hence, has adopted the use of Scantech’s Geoscan mineral analysers at two of their mines.There are two Geoscans at Cloudbreak; one on the ROM feed conveyor and another on the final product conveyor. These allow the in-feed material grade characteristics to be assessed. Moreover, the final product stream can be monitored to ensure product quality is maintained within acceptable quality tolerances. A third Geoscan is installed at Christmas Creek mine on a conveyor that transfers final products to Stockyards.This paper discusses the use of the Geoscans in these installations, including benefits to Fortescue’s operations, as well as functional considerations such as the impact of maintenance and calibration. The Late Permian intermediate to silicic talc-alkaline Drake Volcanics of New England, N.S.W., consist largely of shallow marine, redeposited volcaniclastic rocks which host epithermal Ag-Au deposits. Pervasive hydro- thermal alteration is widespread. The 200-300 m Cataract River Member includes several sedimen- tation cycles composed of massive pumice brec- cias, overlain by laminated sandstones and siltstones, interbedded with marine, fossil- iferous mudstones. Two distinct groups of cla- sts exist within the volcaniclastic beds: 1. Lithics of predominantly intermediate compos- ition lavas that have undergone subaerial epi- clastic erosion and transportation; 2.Pumice, quartz and plagioclase crystals which have not been reworked by epiclastic processes. The lithic clasts were derived locally in a sub- aerial environment within the Drake Volcanics, and pumice and crystal fragments from contem- poraneous centres of silicic volcanism else- where in New England, N.S.W. The latter group of clasts was transported to Drake by Plinian airfall or rafting, and fell and was washed on- to emergent portions of the Drake Volcanics, where reworked locally derived fragments occ- urred. Cold state subaqueous mass-flows, prod- uced by slumping, resedimented the mixed vol- caniclastic detritus into the marine basin in a series of cyclic units with massive lower parts, and laminated upper zones. Modern ana- logs of the palaeogeographic setting in New England, N.S.W., in the Late Permian are pro- vided by the Taupo Zone, New Zealand, and sou- thern Kyushu, Japan.

Assessment of mineral reserves in any ore- body hinges on both mineralisation characteris- tics and the economics of extraction. The mineral reserves statement depends on interpre- tation of diamond drill information by geolo- gists, determination of the production plan and operating costs by mining and metallurgical engineers and prediction of future income by economists. The techniques used to generate the mineral reserves statement for Bougainville Copper Limited in 1969 are described and the accuracy of predictions discussed. Preliminary results from a geostatistical reassessment are comp- ared with the ore zone model, blast hole data and concentrator reconciled production results.

The Mons Cupri Cu-Pb-Zn deposit is situated within a complex Archaean volcanic sequence dominated by rhyolitic fragmental rocks. This sequence is underlain by a 150 m group of rhyolitic ash flow tuffs with minor conglomerate and sandstone, and is overlain by approximately 180 m of dacite and andesite flows. The Mons Cupri sequence itself consists of several elongate or circular rhyolite domes, flanked by rhyolitic fragmental rocks ranging up to 400 m in thickness away from the domes. The lithology of clasts (typically 1 cm to 1.5 m in size) provides strong evidence that the flanking fragmental unit was derived by explosive eruptions associated with the rhyolite domes. An approximately 15 m thick shale horizon, bleached and silicified at its base, overlies both the rhyolite domes and the frag- mental unit. A south-dipping chloritic pipe-like body, with near-surface dimensions of 1,000 by 250 m and narrowing at depth to produce a cone-shaped cross section, lies within the rhyolitic frag- mental rocks about 250 m north of the largest rhyolite'dome in the Mons Cupri vicinity. Its east west elongation parallels that of the rhyolite dome. Ghost fragments indicate that the material in this fissure is a severely chloritized derivative of the rhyolitic frag- mental unit. In recent years the column flotation process has gained worldwide acceptance for processing various types of minerals under different circuit configurations. In an age when real prices of many mineral commodities are in decline and mining and labour costs are rising in real terms, it is more important than ever that concentration processes be not only efficient but also cost-effective. The column flotation process can give better metallurgical performance as well as involve lower capital and operating costs compared to conventional mechanical cells.This paper reviews the literature on columns and the effects of various column parameters on performance of the column flotation process. The history and principles of operation of the column flotation process are briefly discussed by way of introduction.
