The paper describes the design of the dilute medium and medium recovery circuits installed at the coal preparation plants at the Cornwall Coal Company's Fingal Mine, and the BP Coal Australia's Howick Mine. These circuits maximize the use of clarified water for rinsing to improve the mass transfer of adhering medium from the coal surface into the carrying liquid, and have been combined with the use of a two stage magnetic separator. The separator utilizes a conventional concurrent first stage and a counter-rotation second stage. This combination results in high medium recoveries during both normal operation, and start up and shut down phases when large quantities of medium can be lost from a conventional circuit. Overall losses using this circuit have been estimated to be, 200g/t, over a twelve month period. Further advantages in plant operation are also obtained, especially steady operating conditions in the centre-tube pump tank, lower slimes contamination of the product, and lower quantities of non magnetics trapped in the separator concentrates. The techniques are particularly suited to incorporation in circuits treating coals containing high percentages of sticky and difficult clays, as are found in the Walloon coal measures.

Oversize rock breaking and metal tramp removal are key issues for reducing primary crusher downtime, as well as improving the safety associated with its operation. Remote operation of such tasks would thus not only increase productivity, but also reduce the risks related to work in confined spaces, fall risks, and overhead hazards. These issues are particularly relevant in high-capacity operations such as iron ore mining, where large machines are in continuous operation. This article describes the architecture, construction and advanced testing of a novel remotely operated robotic mechanism for assessment and removal of metal tramp from primary crusher chambers. The system essentially includes a robotic-arm equipped with a hydraulic clamp tool for handling oversize material, as well as an oxy-flame module for cutting metal pieces entrapped within the primary crusher cavity. The first industrial unit was delivered to a large iron ore mine in Brazil, where the installation and testing is scheduled within the coming months.

The Kennedy Siltstone Open Cut provides graded rock for stope filling. Rotary drilling of 310 mm blastholes with a Gardner Denver GD120 is used, and the successful application of an equilateral triangular drilling pattern is described. Charging practices and the development of bulk slurry handling are outlined. Blast monitoring plays an important role in K.S.O.C. drilling and blasting operations. The proximity of nearby residential areas (1300 m) and the Mount Isa Airport (4500 m) necessitates special attention with regard to the minimisation of both air blast and ground vibration levels. The application and control of drilling and blasting parameters has had a direct bear- ing on success of the mining operations and also played an important role in reducing the disturbance to the community.

Geochemical exploration continues to play a significant role in new mineral discoveries inAustralia and elsewhere, including terrains where mineralisation is buried or otherwise obscured by regolith cover of various types. Transported regolith commonly restricts the migration of trace elements to surface, especially in arid terrains, presenting a range of problems for traditional geochemical exploration methods that employ surface samples. Regions dominated by transported cover include the northern parts of the Tasmanides in eastern Australia and the Yilgarn Craton which are variably covered by thick alluvium and Mesozoic to Cainozoic sedimentary rocks (Anand and Paine, 2002). Supergene nickel sulphide ore mined currently by Agnew Mining Company is at times partially oxidised to sulphate. The resulting soluble nickel, and calcium and magnesium in mill water, are shown to act as depressants in flotation. The depressant effect is favourably selective in that violarite, the main nickel mineral, is less affected than pyrrhotite. Nickel recovery, however, is adversely affected, probably through reduced flotation of complex sulphides. Soda ash consumption is increased markedly by the presence of the cations as shown by operating data and pulp titration tests. A significant increase in concentrate grade, from 9% to 14% Ni, was achieved late in 1981. One of the changes in plant practice which contributed to this improvement was the addition of soda ash to mill feed rather than to flotation feed as before. It is shown by laboratory tests that this reduced the depressant effects of the cations, thereby improving recovery at the expense of rougher selectivity, or equivalently, increasing concentrate grade at constant recovery. Sequencing of large underground firings is a critical aspect of blast performance. Using theory developed in open cut operations, where blast results are easier to quantify, a new technique for sequencing underground mass blasts has been developed. The basis for the technique is to identify timing regimes to control fragmentation and relief then apply non-electrics to fit these criteria. The use of computer software to graphically interpret delay statistics enables the evaluation of designs in a realistic manner.

"To provide an indication of expected performance of the mine and mill, feasibility studies should include an assessment of the expected day-to-day variability in process plant feed. Attempts to do this based on conventional resource models will be flawed as such studies fail to consider and account for the in-built smoothing (averaging) of input data.This can lead to one of two situations: an expensive, over-engineered process plant that can cope with every possible situation, or operational strategies that fail to manage the natural variability within the orebody and the impact of day-to-day operational decision-making.In both cases the value of the project diminishes through excessive capital costs or reduced throughput or recovery during operations.Unlike conventional estimation techniques, the geostatistical method of conditional simulation can reproduce the inherent variability of the deposit. Once a valid model has been developed, it is possible to analyse the model using a transfer function that simulates the proposed mining processes and provides a representation of the likely variation of mill feed characteristics at any time scale.The case study demonstrates how the proposed mining strategy would result in mill feed being considerably more variable than expected, resulting in poor recovery, low throughput and potential breaches of environmental conditions. Mitigation measures included budgeting for additional mining equipment to enable greater flexibility during mining and revised stockpiling and crusher feed strategies.Awareness of the benefits of modelling the variability of geometallurgical parameters will increase the use of this approach in producing more realistic financial models of expected mine performance at the design stage.CITATION:Shaw, W J, Khosrowshahi, S and Weeks, A, 2013. In this paper, the history of Japanese coal and gas outbursts is presented and circumstances and countermeasures at the time cf outbursts are summarized statistically. Then the present meth- ods for prevention used practically in Japan are introduced. From statistics, it was reconfirmed that Japanese coal and gas outbursts have occur- ed frequently in the district of geological disturbance, symptoms immediately before out- burst occurrence were the phenomena in connec- tion with failure of a coal seam and outbursts have occurred many times when the number of boreholes had not been sufficient to degas. One of the principal protective method adopted in Japan is the large diameter gas drainage boring which also posesses a stress relief effects. There is a tendency to make diameter of borehole larger to increase both stress relief and degassing effects.

The Nelson province was chosen as the prime area for rhenium sampling, based on its mineral associations. Sample preparation involved benefication by grinding and flotation A modification of published procedures for rhenium analysis was developed and the results compared with those obtained for molybdenum on the same samples using atomic absorption spectroscopy. The results of the analysis for both metals is discussed and the relationships between rhenium and the molybdenum mineralisa- tion of this region is commented on. A metal- 1ngenic province is defined for molybdenum and r'.ienium and the tectonic setting for this is discussed. Some consideration has been given to rhenium possibilities in Fiordland and the Coromandel Range.

It is estimated that substandard ground support installations and elements cost the Rio Tinto Copper Group millions of dollars between 2000 and 2014. These issues have also created significant safety and financial risks in Rio Tinto mines. As a result, Rio Tinto Copper has developed CaveCAD, an integrated system to collect, store and analyse all ground support-related data. The CaveCAD system stores geotechnical data and has the ability to automatically import data, collect data through tablet applications, report processed/analysed data and present this data through 3D visualisation software.The CaveCAD Ground Support module closes the design–implementation–verification loop by providing a method of verifying the compliance of all installed ground support, recording manufacturer specifications, recording quality control test compliance and rectifying any non-conformant areas. The module uses innovative technology to create value through cost saving, safety improvements and data collection efficiency. Cost savings will be achieved by a decreased need for excavation rehabilitation, less ‘waste’ due to faulty installation and quality assurance checks reducing the likelihood of substandard support units being used. The Coeur d'Alene mining district in northern Idaho, USA is the second largest producer of silver in the world. Mesothermal silver-lead-zinc veins occur in the metasedimentary rocks of the Belt Supergroup with five main types of associated hydrothermal alteration: 1) feldspar destruction, 2) hydrothermal bleaching, 3) carbonatisation, 4) sulfidation, and 5) silicification. Hydrothermal bleaching is characterised by hematite destruction with associated siderite and quartz veins and veinlets, coarse euhedral pyrite and magnetite. Bleached zones envelop both mineralised and barren veins and extend for metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Carbonatisation consists of addition of siderite, which occurs as veins, veinlets, stockwork, irregular blebs or spots, and coarsely disseminated grains, depending on the relative distance from the main vein structure. Siderite envelops nearly all mineralised veins, relates to all other alteration types and extends from several metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Pyrite and galena alteration dominate sulfidation and are associated with some mineralised veins. Pyrite alteration strongly correlates with siderite alteration and exists in three main forms: a) very fine-grained pyrite flooding, which can extend for metres to tens of metres into wall rocks; b) coarse-grained, euhedral pyrite, which is sporadic and associated with the redox boundary in hydrothermally bleached zones; and c) small isolated zones (6 - 15 cm) of medium-grained, subhedral to euhedral pyrite associated with pervasive siderite alteration. Where present, disseminated galena extends for metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Silicification is characterised by veins, veinlets, stringers, irregular patches and variable hardness in siltites and commonly appears in association with hydrothermal bleaching and siderite alteration. Although related to mineralisation, silicification is sporadic and in most places a clear envelope around mineralised veins cannot be identified.

The paper presents the results of chlorination of beneficiated rutile and struverite (a tantalum-niobium bearing, rutile type mineral in alluvial tin deposits) by carbon tetrachloride in the range 623¦K to 773¦K. The chlorination of rutile could reach near completion at 773¦K in about an hour. The process was found to follow a modified pore-blocking law, with the basic reaction constant K varying inversely with the particle size, so that the basic process may be a reaction under interface control (chemical control) as modified by the pore blocking effect. The pore blocking factors for the various experimental conditions were evaluated and the predicted curves showed good agreement with the experimental data. In the case of Struverite, a similar kinetic behaviour was observed but the chlorination process was relatively slower than that in rutile. It was also observed that in struverite, niobium got chlorinated faster, followed by tantalum and titanium, indicating a good possibility of separation by chlorination using carbon tetrachloride.

An exploration and preliminary mine design contract was undertaken in Thailand to establish whether adequate lignite resources existed for the addition of future power generation plant through to the year 2000. The lignite ranges in heat value from 14 to 24 MJ/Kg (air dry basis) and occurs in 2 major seams consistituting measured reserves of 536 Mt (with an ash cut-off level of 45 % on an air dry basis) and a strip ratio of 4.1 bank cm/t. The paper describes the pre-planning, programming, equipment used, project management, logistics and exploration methods adopted to undertake the contract in a monsoonal area using Australian drilling and geophysical contractors.

The role of chemical speciation in alkaline cyanide solutions is discussed by reference to recent experimental data from the authors' laboratories. It is shown that serious gaps exist in our present knowledge of the thermodynamics of cyanide complexes in solution. Nevertheless, using the available data and the JESS suite of computer programs it has been possible to develop a simplified chemical speciation model for alkaline cyanide solutions under conditions relevant to the gold extraction process. Some possible implications of the model for plant operations are Discussed.

The minerals industry has enormous potential to positively contribute to sustainable development and many leading companies have concluded that their long-term success is directly linked to their ability to leave a lasting positive legacy. While there are many examples of success, there have been failures as well and much work has been done in recent years to define the role of the minerals industry in sustainable development and identify the key elements for success. In the past, our sector could point to the taxes and royalties it paid, the exports it generated and employment it created and felt confident that its contribution would be recognised and duly acknowledged. This is no longer the case. Critics of the industry have highlighted resource-rich countries that have failed to capitalise on their resource wealth and have arguably lower standards of living than their resource-poor peers û the æresource curseÆ hypothesis. Recent research has done much to clarify the factors that contribute to a countryÆs success or failure and all stakeholders in the industry now need to include these learnings in their approaches going forward. We know that our long-term success relies on embedding a company- wide approach to sustainable development into all aspects of our business operations. In this paper we highlight BHP BillitonÆs experience in the development and implementation of policies and systems designed to enhance our contribution to sustainable development. We detail the business drivers for excellence in this area and the key external codes and initiatives that have shaped our approach. The values-based BHP Billiton Charter, Sustainable Development Policy and associated Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) Management Standards are central to our approach. Implementation is reviewed through our HSEC audit program. One area in which we have placed particular emphasis is our approach to community development. BHP Billiton has a corporate target to contribute one per cent of its pre-tax profit on a three year rolling average to voluntary community programs. As our profit stream has increased with the minerals boom this is approaching an A$100 million commitment. In our paper we detail how we are working to ensure we maximise the value of this contribution for our communities and our shareholders.

The South Junction deposit of St Barbara Mines Limited was discovered in 1989 by the geologists of Ross Atkins Mining.The deposit occurs in the lower part of the Gabanintha Formation of the Lukes Creek Group in the Mt Magnet -Meekatharra greenstone belt. Country rock is predominantly talc-chlorite schist. Gold mineralisation is associated with north-south shear zones, quartz-carbonate-fuchsite alteration of the ultramafic rocks and in particular close to deeply weathered quartz-albite porphyry. "Recent project failures have called into question the use and relevance of benchmarking and independent reviews, forcing a rethink of traditional processes and procedures.With cost estimates and schedules dramatically varying from lows seen around the global financial crisis to peaks experienced in the recent mining boom, benchmarking has ranged between essential and misleading.Profound shifts are now underway in future project delivery strategies as the market moves away from cost-plus engineering, procurement and construction management. The current trends in project implementation are to utilise more lump-sum design and construct or fixed-price supply and construct contracts. This trend will remove transparency in detailed cost information by reducing the sources and clarity of cost data.Independent peer reviews (IPRs) of studies and investment recommendations performed over the last decade have both failed to prevent flawed or deficient projects from proceeding to approval and funding, and been successful in ensuring that owners did not proceed with doomed investments.In recent times, it has been recognised by some owners, contractors and engineers that traditional benchmarking checks or IPRs, or a combination of both, will not necessarily produce reliable assessments of study conclusions and of the forecasts of project outcomes. To be of value, the benchmarking process now also needs to recognise the highly volatile responses from the engineering and construction industry to the current and future markets for their services.Similarly, reviewers who draw upon benchmarks of past project experiences on an understanding of the things that shaped and influenced their outcomes need to be more aware of how a future dynamic market may impact the outcome of the projects and raise warning flags accordingly.With the commodity cycle currently approaching what is hoped is its bottom, ensuring that benchmarking and independent reviews evolve into reliable, transparent and worthwhile processes becomes even more important. The paper discusses the improvements achieved after an external sparger flotation column, 1.42 m diameter by 9.5 m high, was installed as a re-recleaner unit at the Northam Platinum LtdÆs UG 2 plant in South Africa. The paper also evaluates the pilot plant data prior to the industrial size column installation as well as the accuracy of scale up from pilot to full-scale operation. Since the installation of the PrepQuip flotation column, the final concentrate upgrade ratio improved from 83 to 105, the 3PGM+Auå recovery improved from 79.7 per cent to 81 per cent and the Cr2O3 content in the final concentrate decreased from five per cent to 2.8 per cent. The upgrade ratio can be improved to 125 with an overall 3PGM+Au recovery of 80 per cent. Conventional mechanically agitated flotation cells achieved only 74 per cent recovery at an upgrade ratio of 125.

The treatment of the Broken Hill ores has,undergone many changes during the last ten years, and it may be of interest to some of the members to know what are the main lines on which the Proprietary Mine works at present. It must be understood that the want of absolute uniformity in the treatment amongst the various mines at the Barrier does not prove that some of the mines are working on wrong lines, for the ore is not exactly the same along the whole line of lode; this necessitates a variation in treatment, although generally only in detail.At the Proprietary Mine the ore is all mined by contract the miners are paid so much per ton for clean ore. The ore in the mine in most stopes is mixed with gangue, and the inclination of the uliners is, of course, to mix gangue with the ore, so as to be paid for as large 3 tonnage as possible. This is quite natural clean ore is easily distinguishable from clean gangue, but most lumps are a mixture of clean ore and gangue in varying proportions. The miner will naturally throw into his heap pieces which he considers still good enough, whilst the management may consider these pieces just a trifle too poor; consequently a check must be kept on this.This necessitates the first operation to which the ore is submitted.
