The CSIRO ore classification scheme for Pilbara ores was used as a reference frame to target recognisable ore types/textures with potentially elevated phosphorus content for detailed analysis. Particles of each individual ore texture were separated from a Brockman high-P ore and each class was characterised using methods including XRF, XRD, EPMA and synchrotron-based XAS. Results were then correlated with optical microscopy and hand specimen identification to establish any relevant associated mineralogical phases and/or textures. This represents a more systematic approach to identification of high-P ore components based on particle and goethite type and texture. The information can then provide the basis for more targeted P-removal strategies factoring in the relationship between particle/ore texture and phosphorus deportment

With the advent of Electronic Detonator Systems in the global mining industry, as well as the development of high precision pyrotechnic delays, the measurement and analysis of delay performance (usually measured in terms of dispersion about a batch mean û precision, and the deviation of that mean from the nominal detonation time û accuracy), has become an important issue. Through the non-conventional use of existing Velocity of Detonation (VoD) measurement technology, it has been shown to be feasible to measure the precision and accuracy of delay detonator series connected in the same manner as a typical open pit bench hook up. This paper describes the work undertaken to compare and contrast performance results obtained using a range of instrumentation including High Speed Video (HSV) filming, digital counter timing using a Hewlett Packard Universal Counter and a digital VoD measurement device. The results obtained demonstrated the practical feasibility of using the latter technology in order to obtain relatively large amounts of data in a time-efficient manner, with a precision of better than 0.5 microseconds, if required. The results also confirmed the close statistical agreement obtained between the three forms of performance measurement, therefore permitting the substitution of the VoD measurement technique for the more capital cost intensive HSV technique and the slow, sample-by-sample HP Universal Counter method. In spite of the efforts done in the past to implement in Codelco best practice guidelines and standards on several important sampling, assaying and variability issues, many people, particularly top managers and operators, are still not aware of the relevance of the use of the principles and practice of geostatistics, sampling theory, analytical chemistry and the understanding of processes variability from rock to cathodes. As a result, an important challenge for the sampling community is to find out the causes of this lack of awareness and to develop communication skills to influence the organisation, particularly the top management level. This situation is not affecting only Codelco; it is a common characteristic of the copper mining industry. The main cause is cultural. Judeo-Christian and occidental sciences are deterministic. This implies a disregard of process variation and the assumption that homogeneity is omnipresent. Another important aspect of the cultural challenge is education. Education is the most efficient way to transfer a system of ideas, traditions and practices. To implement proper courses of sampling theory and geostatistics and support to multidisciplinary education at universities, mining companies will improve teamwork between geologists, mining engineers, metallurgists and chemists. The improvements will imply a more sustainable and efficient mining business.

The Warraua and Mount Poole Inliers form part of a discontinuous series of basement complexes in the northwestern corner of New South Wales. The Inliers comprise mainly clastic sediments of low metamorphic grade (Wonominta Beds) and minor sills, dykes and intrusives, particularly within the Mount Poole lnJier. The Warratta rnlier has received attention due to the occurrence of auriferous quartz-veins where reef mining activities havetaken place.The deformational history of the Warratta and Mount Poole Inljers is characterised by a continuous subhorizontally WSW-ENE directed compression. Deformation was associated with the development of NNW-trending and steeply west-dipping major faults, which bound or biscct the inliers. Chevron folds and a penetrative axial planar cleavage characterise the deformational architecture and document crustal shorterung of at least 40 per cent. In zones adjacent to the major faults and within pelitic and semi-pelitic uruts, a multiple deformational evolution becomes apparent, comprising two events (D1 and D2). Deformational structures considered significant in this study were the result of D1. Tight, northeast-vergent fold patterns FI' and associated axjal plane cleavage SI' and reverse dip-slip movements at major faults indicate early northeast-directed thrusting during D1. This was followed by dextral strike-slip deformation displayed by tight, recumbent folds, en-echelon fold patterns (F2'), a northeast trending crenulation cleavage (52'), and two sets of second order faults, the latter showing high angular relationship to the major faults. A final stage of the deformational history (D2) is represented by WSW-ENE trending kink folds (F2).Auriferous quartz veins, predominantly occurring within pelitic and semi-pelitic units, were generated syntectorucally during the early deformational event (D1) in the course of commencing development of cleavage (S2'). Vein textures point towards vein formation by repeated hydrauJjc fracturing and fracture healing (crack-seal process), and by simple accretionary vein growth. Folded pelite-dominated horizons, considered as low permeability units, are suggested preferential sites where migrating metamorphic Ouids pooled and were trapped, causing high fluid pressure.Hydraulic fracturing and vein precipitation was controlled by lithology and structural constraints such as cleavage.K-Ar dates of approximately 440 Ma (Benambran Orogeny) marking the peak of metamorphism, and coinciding with the development of cleavage S1', also indicate the time of auriferous quartz-vein formation. A period of deformation of at least 30 Ma is proposed for the development of cleavage S1', as constrained by K-Ar dating and the intrusion of a syntectonic granitoid, the Tibooburra Granodiorite.

A brick veneer house located on a open-pit coal mine lease has been subject to ground vibration levels of up to 222 mm/s, and air vibration levels of up to 145 dBL. The dynamic response of the structure was measured with accelerometers, geophones, and strain gauges as part of a project investigating the response of brick veneer houses to blasting. This paper outlines the project, and provides information on brickwork strength, foundation investigations, and observations on damage due to blasting. Correlations have been made between crack behaviour and factors such as blast vibration levels and rainfall.

Many changes have occurred in the world market for manganese over the last five years. Among these, the emergence of divided steel processes for the hot metal refining of pig iron is affecting the use of both ferruginous manganese ore and ferro manganese, at this stage particularly in the Japanese steel industry. Subsequent demand for higher quality manganese materials is promoting the use of thermally beneficiated products such as sinter. In addition, many processes are being developed for the direct smelting of fine manganese ores, of which plasma technology is the most advanced. Cost pressures and product quality requirements are encouraging pre- viously self sufficient countries such as The People's Republic of China and the USSR to import high grade manganese ores to supplement indigenous lower quality supplies. At the same time, Brazil has been provided with the impetus to convert its substantial reserves of ore to value added products.

"The Stockman base metals project is situated in State Forest in the alpine area of East Gippsland, Victoria, adjacent to a National Park and within the headwaters of a major Ramsar-listed wetland catchment and the Murray-Darling River system. Site topography is steep, and elevated (650 m – 1200 m above sea level), and subject to circa 1 m annual rainfall, with occasional winter snowfall. The project consists of two volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits to be mined by underground methods and treated in a 1.0 Mt/a central concentrator to produce copper and zinc concentrates for export over a ten year operational life. New resource projects are rare in Victoria. Recognising the sensitive setting, planning for the Stockman Project, which is now in the advanced permitting stage, has focused on balancing economic, environmental and social outcomes to ensure social licence to operate is secured and can be maintained. This has involved close attention to triple bottom line (TBL) risks and outcomes. Stockman has successfully gained State and Federal approvals via the Environmental Effects Statement process. The process of obtaining these approvals has required close attention to effective stakeholder involvement, and management of a lengthy and difficult approvals process, which is still to be finally concluded. This paper is a case study of the process of that permitting and the issues encountered to date. Key learnings from the experience have included: successful approvals require close attention to much more than just the project and its technical aspects and physical setting – effective stakeholder involvement and endorsement is critical the differing consultation requirements for local, regional and government stakeholders, to design and plan implementation of a project to meet TBL objectives, and to gain social licence to operate within the Victorian approvals process, the need for an effective lead government agency with policy authority dealing with material policy change requiring post-closure financial sureties estimating realistic permitting time and cost during the project evaluation phase. After reviewing the various approach es,namely, empirical,analytical.observational and numerical, a logical systematic approach is proposed for the estimation of compressive strength of coal pillars. In this approach first,uniaxial compressive strength of coal in pillars is estimated,taking into account the size effect and the effect of discontinuities. Next,the compressive strength of coal pillars is estimated by determining the stress distribution in the pillar and the Bieniawski strength criterion. The results appear to be compatible to the ones obtained by Wilson's method. The traditional pillar design equations give improper answers for deep workings.

Responsibility for the administration of mineral resources is divided between federal and provincial governments. The paper traces the evolution of mineral policies at both levels of government, from the end of World War II to the present. In the immediate post-World War II years, the emphasis was on supplying the raw material needs of a rapidly growing world economy. Policies favouring growth and development of the Canadian mining industry were instituted during this period. Two decades of uninterrupted expansion (the 1950s and 1960s) ensued. The decade of the 1970s was a turbulent one for Canadian mineral producers. Governments intervened more substantially than ever before. Moreover, the industry suffered from an intense period of competition for resource revenues by the two levels of government. At the same time, far reaching changes were taking place in the structure of world mineral markets. To date in the 1980s, the mineral industry has, perforce, adapted to existing mineral market structures. Mineral policies, too, have shown signs of adapting to the needs of the mineral industry. Whether the resulting mix of policies will permit the revitalization of the Canadian mining sector remains to be seen.

On 8 July 1993, a landslide of about one million cubic metres of rock blocked the river Satluj near Sanjay Vidyut Pariyojana - Bhaba project and caused flooding into the Bhaba Power House (120 MW) resulting in suspension of power generation. The concerned authorities desired an early removal of the blockade by an underwater blasting operation into the over topping water to reduce the water level at the blockade and resume power generation in the power house. In the absence of underwater drilling, it was essential for the blasting technique to be used where no cavity to confine the explosive was required. For this reason mud capping and plaster shooting with directional throw were used and additional specially fabricated mild steel pipe charges were used under high current for an underwater trenching operation. By employing these techniques the river blockade was removed up to the required depth and on 8 September 1993 the Power House resumed the power generation.

Traditionally, operators on mineral flotation plants have relied on visual inspection of the froth surface when making adjustments to process set-points. Machine vision systems are being developed to relate froth surface descriptors, which can be consistently measured in real time, to flotation performance. By investigating the impact of various selected operating variables on both froth surface characteristics and metallurgical performance it is possible to develop a management strategy for the control and optimisation of the process. This paper presents the results of testwork conducted at Kennecott copper mine which investigates the relationship between the froth colour and the concentrate grade and discusses the factors which affect the froth colour. This work shows that the main factors that influence the froth colour in this system are molybdenum, copper and iron concentrate grade, pulp and concentrate per cent solids and pulp iron grade.It goes on to develop models to predict the concentrate grade based on colour information and velocity and stability information. It also shows that the most accurate prediction is made with combined colour and stability information.

Geological structures are irregular and intricate, so creating a 31) solid geology model is a complicated process. A software system can only partially automate this process, since geological knowledge and experience are required. Therefore, the interaction of a geologist is critical for such a system. This paper discusses some useful advanced functions for enhancing the visualisation and manipulation of 3D solid geology models: flexible attribute display, multiple views, auxiliary display objects, and geologically sensitive operations. It also describes some experiments to explore the effectiveness of these functions and presents sample output. Most existing 3D solid geology modelling systems are implemented in an ad hoc way, which greatly reduces their reusability and extensibility. This paper presents a generic framework for 3D solid geology modelling systems, which is based on object-oriented technology. The deficiencies of current systems may be improved by using this generic framework. A modelling process based on drillhole data is discusses as a case study.

The difficulty in creating and obtaining a competitive edge in the mineral industry is rapidly increasing. The Kiruna Iron Ore Mine in the far north of Sweden is currently thriving on the world market through firm managerial strategy. LKAB believes in upgrading its raw material to produce a high quality iron ore product for sale to steelworks throughout the world. It is vital that this product is also of uniform quality and quantity to provide quality assurance to customers. The first link in meeting these product requirements starts in the underground workings. Mining methods and operations are of large-scale. Automation and continuous production streamline operations and reduce operating costs. These factors have built Kiruna Iron Ore Mine into the world's biggest, most modern, underground iron ore mine. To remain competitive on the world market, LKAB relies heavily on research and development. The mine is currently in a phase of upgrading its operations. A 25-tonne Toro electric loader is being tested to improve the rate of output of ore from the mine. Long hole drills are being improved to increase accuracy and efficiency. An electronic detonating system will improve detonator delay precision. Projects are underway to better understand ore flow mechanisms from a caving orebody. Benefits include improved ore recovery along with better rock quality control at the caving front. The continued updating of mining operations at Kiruna will enable LKAB to continue to maintain its competitive advantage on the world market in the production of high quality iron ore products.

In April 2006, Orica Quarry Services undertook an investigation to determine the likely vibration and frequency response of three water storage tanks to quarry blasting, immediately adjacent to the tanks. Of the three tanks that were studied, two are relatively tall with a æwineglassÆ shape; one is constructed of steel (4 ML storage capacity) while the other is constructed of concrete (2 ML storage capacity). The third is a ground-embedded concrete tank that is relatively squat and broad in shape (38 ML storage capacity). A vibration limit of 25 mm/s and an acceleration limit of 0.16 g were imposed on the tanks. However, this report shows that this acceleration limit, whilst having relevance to low frequency earthquake motions, is quite inappropriate for the high frequency blast vibrations that are typical in a quarry blasting environment. The investigation involved firing 11 single blastholes of known charge weights and distances from the tanks, and measuring the tank vibration response using blast monitors placed on and around each tank. Analysis of the data collected from the cement tanks showed resonant responses over a broad range of frequencies, with dominant and lesser responses in vertical and lateral motion recorded at 9.8 Hz, 12 Hz, 16.8 Hz, 17 Hz, 31.3 Hz and 38.1 Hz. Unfortunately, most of the data collected on the steel tank was corrupted by noise due to electrical sources and/or mechanical sources such as the water agitator inside the tank. Advanced Monte Carlo vibration models were then constructed using the single blasthole information. Knowing the resonant frequencies enabled the modelling of electronic delay sequences for the reduction of resonant vibrations. Ultimately programmable and accurate electronic delay detonators were deemed essential to allow blasting in relatively close proximity to the tanks while avoiding resonant frequencies. Three blast designs were modelled, ranging in maximum instantaneous charge (MIC) from 4 kg to 22 kg, and 60 holes to 160 holes. The modelling showed that two of the designs (using small charge weights) could be used no closer than 71 m from the storage tanks. This is based on a 90 per cent confidence level of achieving vibration levels within the 0.16 g acceleration limit, even though the velocity levels predicted to be generated at this distance were significantly less than the 25 mm/s limit. The third design incorporated larger charge weights and could be used for blasting at distances no closer than 220 m from the tanks. The present work, conducted in an operating quarry, demonstrates the usefulness of Monte Carlo waveform superposition techniques for the control and reduction of ground vibration (either velocity or acceleration) under restrictive environmental constraints. However, a discussion is also presented to demonstrate that it is somewhat restrictive to impose an acceleration limit based on the motion produced by low frequency earthquakes rather than the motion produced by high frequency blast vibrations.

The current methodology for delineating and subsequently evaluating coal reserves is based on the use of vertical drill holes and surface based geophysics/geology. These techniques have three major problems, these being respectively:-a) Vertical drill holes can only provide a small sample of the coal seam and stratigraphy. Therefore the planar variation in coal reserve and environment parameters can only be approximated.b) Although surface based geophysics has had its fair share of success in recent years, there are still environments which have masked the finding of major structures.c) Access to drill sites is difficult at some locations due to mountaineous terrain, standing water and environmental impact.

A combination of flotation and smelting technologies is proposed as a cost-effective means to maximise the revenue of base metal operations. The proposed treatment route breaks the grade - recovery nexus associated with the treatment of ores exhibiting difficult mineralogy in conventional plants. Aspects of the two technologies are reviewed and typical capital and operating costs presented. A significant improvement in revenue is demonstrated in a worked example, where a copper-lead-zinc operation is examined in terms of the conventional and proposed treatment options. For the selected ore, the net smelter return per tonne of mill feed improved 57 per cent, from US$89.70 to US$141.10 with the proposed treatment option. This represents an additional US$51.4 million in annual revenue. Metallurgical operating costs increased by US$20.12 per tonne of mill feed for an incremental capital requirement of US$30.3 million for an existing operation.

This paper presents the findings and analysis of the investigation of effectiveness of thin spray-on liners (TSLs) as a gas management tool in underground coalmines. The project involves spraying TSL on the area surrounding gas drainage holes whereby the TSL acts as a thin membrane decreasing the permeability of the coal. This restricts air migrating through the coal seam and diluting gas from the drainage holes. There are a number of potential benefits from this technique but key points are that gas drainage holes produce gas with higher concentrations of methane. The design and execution of a field trial to investigate the effectiveness of a TSL on purity of in situ methane from gas drainage holes is presented in this report. For eight drainage holes, the results show an average increase in methane purity by 9.14 per cent and a reduction in air contamination by an average 7.93 per cent. Overall methane flow rate decreased by 27.6 L/s; however, flow rates were unreliable due to poor measuring equipment. For most holes, methane purity was not changed significantly; however, certain boreholes were responsible for most of the variation in methane purity. The boreholes showing a dramatic improvement in methane purity were likely those with intersecting cleats covered by the TSL. If the TSL was sprayed over more area, specifically in areas where the cleats are intersecting with holes, it is likely that purity of methane in the drainage holes will increase.CITATION:Tenney, J M, Chalmers, D and Li, Z, 2015. There is no other effective way for study ing firedamp and coaldust explosions than to produce controlled explosions in a pre-monitor- ed environment - either mine openings kept for the purpose, or special surface galleries. Such explosion testing facilities have been employed historically at Buxton in U.K., with lesser known installations at Bruceton, U.S.A., Tremonia, West Germany, Katowice-Mikolow, Poland and elsewhere. Both firedamp and coal dust explosions are studied. Normally coal dust explosions are initiated by somewhat standardised methane air mixtures, by explosives, or purely by coal dust. Various structures and suppression installations are installed in roadways and galleries prior to explosion to simulate destruction and suppression, and the results of such tests form the basis of suppression installations, especially stone dust barriers and water barriers. Other data collected from these experiments include rev- ersals of explosion waves, pressures and temperatures and duration of explosion waves, analyses of aftergases etc. Other uses of explosion testing galleries include testing of explosives, electrical equipment and frictional . sparking.

Gas problems, largely instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas, arose in the early days of coal mining in Australia, leading to attempts at predrainage often including destressing. With deeper mining and new gassy areas being mined, gas problems have increased. This has led to more research, such as into coal-gas relationships, and more practical trials into seam gas drainage in both the Sydney and Bowen basins. Predrainage techniques have been devised to suit the special Australian geological conditions and to take into account the erratic occurrence of CO, (nearly 100 per cent in some cases) in the seam gas. Better mining methods and other improvements are continuing. The introduction of post-drainage has been simplified by the adaptation of long established overseas techniques and equipment.Utilisation of seam gases in Australia is complicated by the presence of CO, but even with pure CH. little has been done.Seam gas drainage has some disadvantages such as the need for, and the dangers of, complex and rigorously controlled plant. Also drained coal becomes harder and dustier.

Effective exploration, testing and analysis is essential for good process design and optimisation of coal preparation plants. Coal processing relies on the sizing and washability characteristics of the particular coal to define the most cost effective design to meet the market requirements. Flowsheet development and equipment selection is dependent on the natural quality characteristics of the coal, its physical properties and the value of the final product in its market. The methodology of process selection and the key elements in design are discussed. Coal is consumed in two general markets: ò steaming coal - both domestic and export, and ò metallurgical coal. This paper discusses the typical economic analysis required to evaluate the potential for, and cost benefit of, providing the flexibility to switch coals between markets. A case study illustrates the methodology of process selection in a typical high value metallurgical coal.
