Coal mining ceased at Strongman Mine this year after 70 years of production. Underground mining finished in 2003 and opencast methods began in 1998. During the life of the mine, 8 million tonnes of coal was extracted from two underground mines and 1.2 million tonnes removed through opencast methods. Strongman Mine is within the Grey Coal Fields; various seams have been extracted from the Rewanui Coal Measures. Coal extracted was predominantly of thermal or semi-soft specifications and characterised by low sulphur and low ash.   The area has steep topography, high rainfall (>3000 mm/yr) and is particularly exposed to westerly quarter winds. Strongman 1 and 2 underground mines are located in the steep, narrow valley which leads to the Strongman Opencast at the top of the valley. Subsidence from underground mining combined with spontaneous combustion, has resulted in an underground fire which has had substantial surface effects. Opencast mining in the steep topography resulted in several landslides at the perimeters of the site. These factors, along with water management, topsoil management and erosion control have added to the complexity of rehabilitating the site.   Rehabilitation of the site is well underway, including infrastructure removal, final landform creation and revegetation of the Strongman Opencast footprint (~45 hectares). Some innovative methods of rehabilitation have been trialled. Successful trials such as helicopter-seeding and moss hydro-seeding on highwalls are now routinely used along with traditional revegetation practices. 18 hectares disturbed land has been replanted with 88 000 seedlings, and another 200 000 seedlings are scheduled for planting over the three years. Fire management is an ongoing challenge; however thermal photography shows a steady decrease in hot areas which have been contained by grout curtains.   Mine closure is some time away and will occur after all standards set by Solid Energy and regulatory bodies are achieved.

"One of the contributing factors to the extreme cost escalation in the first decade of the 21st century was the increase in the amount and cost of engineering work that went into studies and projects. Various reasons for this were identified, including unsatisfactory productivity due to a shortage of experienced/qualified engineers, the increased complexity and infrastructure requirements of many projects due to location, metallurgy that is more challenging and increasing environmental and social requirements. These conditions often led to unsatisfactory project results in terms of cost and schedule blowouts and created a loss of confidence – both internally and externally – in the industry’s ability to complete projects on time and on budget.Technical fundamentals aside, the experience and effectiveness of project teams has had, and continues to have, a major impact on project cost, schedule and ramp-up to nameplate capacity and operating parameters. There are unfortunately too many examples of where project teams have not been as effective as they could or should have been, all to the ultimate detriment of the project.Using the authors’ extensive experience on both owner’s and engineer’s teams, this paper discusses some of the main reasons for suboptimal team, and hence project, performance and offers thoughts on how best to build and maintain project teams. The analysis and conclusions drawn are built around the Tuckman model of group development known as ‘forming-storming-norming-performing’, which was first proposed some 50 years ago. In the 1989 best-seller The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, the author, Stephen Covey, highlights the importance of maintaining not only ‘production’, but also, ‘production capacity’. When operating a modern flotation concentrator, production is often measured in terms of concentrate tonnage, tonnes milled and plant utilisation. There are very few metrics that focus directly on flotation equipment condition in relation to performance, which is analogous to Covey’s production capacity principal. It is evident on many mine sites that flotation equipment condition is not monitored on a proactive basis and that the prevailing culture is to wait for a failure, before addressing an issue.This paper discusses examples of how poor equipment condition can lead to production loss through poor metallurgical performance. Actual examples are given where these problems have occurred in operating plants. The philosophical context of many activities in mine geology can be an important lever in adding value to operations. For mine geologists (including resource and grade control geologists) we argue that the tasks of problem formulation, observation and data collection, interpretation and modelling invoke various philosophical considerations whether the practitioner is aware of them or not.Constructing testable models to explain reality is the definitive aspect of any activity claiming to be ‘scientific’. A primary goal of mining geology is to build models that accurately predict reality to an acceptable degree and these include litho-structural, stratigraphic, grade control, resource or reconciliation models. What’s more, in mine geology we are often able collect additional drill samples or access new underground openings, for example, that can provide relatively rapid feedback on how predictive, and therefore useful, our models are. In this paper, we describe the key philosophical frameworks proposed for conducting scientific investigations, including falsification, the method of multiple working hypotheses and structural concepts of scientific theory. The strengths and weaknesses of these approaches are discussed and an attempt is made to relate them to activities undertaken by mine geologists. Common perceptions of what constitutes the scientific method have been dominated by how scientists do experimental physics and chemistry in particular. There are very important differences in the types of problem confronted in these experimental sciences compared to the ‘historical sciences’, such as geology, where the processes studied are unique and only evidential traces of past events are available. The philosophical implications of attempting to validate numerical geological models, such as resource estimates are also briefly considered.Some practical conclusions are drawn about how mine geology activities can be better implemented if practitioners are cognisant of the importance of philosophical considerations when attempting to gain new knowledge through a scientific investigation. We believe that the implications for creating additional value to a project or operation can be very significant when geology is applied by a practitioner with an understanding of the philosophical basis of the activities we think of as constituting a scientific investigation.Remember that all models are wrong; the practical question is how wrong do they have to be to not be useful? (Box and Draper, 1987, 74 p).The demand that theories be highly falsifiable has the attractive consequence that theories should be clearly stated and precise. If a theory is so vaguely stated that it is not exactly clear what it is claiming, then when tested by observation or experiment it can always be interpreted so as to be consistent with the results of the test. The paper discusses the state of the progress reached in the development of the diamond wire tool for cutting hard rocks. To the advances of this relatively new technology a substantial contribution has been provided by the research being carried out at the University of Cagliari on samples of granite rocks from different Sardinian stone quarries. On the basis of field experiments and laboratory test data, the mechanism of diamond wire cutting has been assessed. In particular the influence of the rock features and operational variables on tool performance (cutting rate and bead wear) has been Elucidated.

The New Broken Hill Consolidated Airshaft is the first major undertaking in the development of New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd's. property, which adjoins that of The Zinc Corporation Ltd. on the latter's southern boundary.The Zinc Corporation ore-body has a southerly pitch. The Zinc Corporation's New Main Shaft is 1000 ft. north of the common boundary, and the general plan of development of the New Broken Hill Consolidated property is by driving south from this shaft on the lower levels. No downcast airway from the surface was available south of the Zinc Corporation's New Main Shaft; this shaft acts as the main downcast to the bottom of the Zinc Corporation mine, the general air flow then being northward and upward to the upcast shaft at the extreme north end of the Zinc Corporation property.Rock temperature is 920 F. at 2000 ft., increasing by 10 Fahr. each 72 ft., the rock temperature at 3000 ft. being estimated at 1060 Fahr. With the general air flow northward from the Zinc Corporation's New Main Shaft, adequate ventilation under these temperature conditions would not be practicable for any great distance south of this shaft without another main airway from the surface. Accordingly the New Broken Hill Consolidated Airshaft is being sunk at a point 1000 ft. south of the common boundary, i.e., 2000 ft. south of the Zinc Corporation's New Main Shaft, to ventilate future New Broken Hill Consolidated workings and that part of the Zinc Corporation mine between the boundary and the New Main Shaft.

Underground fires represent a constant threat to the safety of underground personnel. Miners in the immediate vicinity may face intense heat, blinding smoke, toxic fumes, fall of ground and other direct effects of a fire. However, the vast majority of victims never actually see the fire, and are overcome either by deadly fumes in the ventilating current or by asphyxiation. The mine ventilation system, which maintains a sustainable atmosphere to the working places, can transport products of combustion with equal efficiency. Miners who are remotely situated from a fire may be forced to evacuate considerable distances, through dense smoke and fumes, or even become cut-off from escape. Additionally, miners may become confused by unfamiliar ventilation characteristics caused by fires. Conveyor belts are widely used for transporting minerals in mines as well as in many other industrial situations. Because they contain large amounts of polymeric materials their use in certain environments, especially coal mines, but also in steel works, power stations and other enclosed areas must be controlled to minimise the fire risk. Over last nine years there have been 60 fires in underground mines in the UK alone and that of these, half have been associated with conveyors. This paper summarises the results obtained from a recent research project that has developed a preliminary computational thermal and fluid dynamic model to represent the spread of flame along a typical conveyor belt used in UK deep coal mines. The results of these models have been calibrated against a series of experimental tests performed within a surface fire test gallery. An improved knowledge of the burn characteristics and rate of release of the products of combustion from conveyor belt fires will assist in the development of better fire detection and fire fighting techniques.

"Our understanding of mineral resources relies on three basic steps: data capture data interpretation model construction. Until recently, all three of these steps required significant time and manual effort to produce a single resource model for mine planning, typically taking more than a year to progress from drilling to the final block model. Over the past several years, BHP Billiton has been developing innovative workflows in rapid resource modelling projects to significantly reduce these time constraints and make the process more productive by replacing manual activities with automated ones. Rapid resource modelling is the process of combining recently developed off-the-shelf technology with internal technology developments to fundamentally change the way we collect, interpret, model and evaluate geoscience data. Initiatives include automated systems and standardised workflows to make it safer, faster and cheaper to continuously update multidiscipline resource models. Specifically, rapid resource modelling workflows combine: real-time analysis of drill holes and drill samples with downhole tools and hyperspectral scanning systemsautomated interpretation of drill hole intervals based on pattern-recognition algorithmscontinuous modelling workflows using implicit modelling software. We outline a first version of an ambitious goal: The world's first horizontal (matrix-independent) generic sampling standard. The specific needs and requirements are overwhelming, as all the world's analytical standards follow strict matrix or material type classification pigeonholes, leading to a plethora of analytical standards. One could rightly expect a similar multiplication regarding sampling standards, yet the singular HORIZONTAL is aimed at being truly generic. Also the existing style of standards writing is cumbersome and partly contradictory. The current work is presently being pursued in CEN and European Union standardisation regimens, for which reason full disclosure and publication is not allowed. Respecting this constraint, we unofficially present selected key issues involved in developing HORIZONTAL: The objective and scope of a horizontal sampling standard is to delineate the minimum set of principles and procedures needed to guarantee documented representative sampling for all types of materials. The horizontal standard is designed for two types of use: 1. auditing/assessing/ improving the reliability of an existing sampling procedure, and 2. design and implementation of a new sampling procedure (new lot type). The principles in this standard are all derived from the Theory of Sampling (TOS), but the standard is far from a mere collection of TOS principles. Representativeness is a characteristic of the sampling process, not of samples themselves. For practical purposes, the horizontal standard follows the fundamental distinction between 'stationary lots' (0-D, 2-D, 3-D lots) and 'dynamic lots' (within TOS aka process sampling - including extended, non-moving 1-D lots). TOS' principles of 'correctness' must never be broken at any stage, lest representativeness is irretrievably lost. The horizontal standard is not written in the mandatory fashion for legally binding matrix-specific standards, eg ISO - for the present overarching purpose a different style had to be developed. The standard must be immediately understandable in full, which merits special demands, eg extensive use of didactic illustrations. HORIZONTAL introduces an all-inclusive sampling variability measure, Relative Sampling Variance (RSV) which is for sampling of stationary lots as variographics is for process sampling - RSV is to be used as a quality criterion for any stationary sampling procedure as applied to a specific heterogeneity (lot/material). The target for this standard is all individuals, companies, organisations and regulatory bodies who are responsible for sampling: technicians, process engineers, laboratory personal, academic and industrial scientists as well as project leaders, technical managers/directors and top managers. Based on current R&D we illustrate the principles promulgated by HORIZONTAL with cases from exploration and mining of minerals commodities, a Finnsh 'Autosampler' at work in the mining context (RSV) as well as sampling equipment for use in the cement and mineral commodities industries. At Newmont’s Jundee Operation, exploration and resource geologists collaborated to produce an open pit resource model. Using a variety of modelling and estimation techniques but no new data, an uneconomic underground target was converted into a potentially economic open pit evaluation. During an industry downturn, it is more important than ever to efficiently share expertise, ideas and resources to problem solve and produce meaningful project outcomes. The two departments brought together different methods and ideas, and the process showed that certain methods worked better than others in different situations, thus the appropriate method was applied to each part of the evaluation. The results were used to create new procedures and improved lithology modelling and resource model estimations. Over the past 20 years drum scrubbers have become a widely adopted technology within iron ore beneficiation plants. Generally, the drum scrubbers in use are considered high-capacity machines capable of accepting larger-sized feed material. Together with a water addition to a desired pulp density and a mild energy input, these large rotating machines effect an attritioning action that removes water soluble clays and other deleterious materials. Within the Western Australian iron ore industry, drum scrubbers have been successfully applied to Channel Iron, Marra Mamba, Bedded and Detrital orebodies. The introduction of drum scrubbers has enabled Western Australian producers to satisfy the substantial increase in demand for iron ore from Chinese steelmakers by making the lower-grade sections of the above orebodies economic. However, despite being a relatively simple unit process, the requirements for successful design and operation of these machines are not fully understood. This paper draws on the collective experience of both authors to provide some points to consider for incorporating drum scrubbers into iron ore beneficiation plant flow sheets.

The current surge of interest in lithium (Li) is due to the anticipated demand for electric vehicles and small scale power storage. Brine deposits contain most of the global Li resource, however hard rock deposits can be more readily and rapidly developed and comprise the majority of proposed projects. These projects plan to use the conventional processing routes of dense medium separation and / or flotation to produce a spodumene concentrate for sale. The standard route for subsequent processing of spodumene concentrate is thermal decrepitation, acid leaching, solution purification and precipitation of lithium carbonate. This is typically followed by further purification. A number of projects have ores which contain other lithium minerals, principally micas, lepidolite and zinnwaldite, necessitating an alternative treatment route. Several different routes for spodumene processing are under development to reduce costs to compete with brine projects. Long hole drilling underground has come a long way since 'down the hole' surface drills were first taken underground. The underground miners have progressively developed the use of long hole stope drilling from the 'quarry blast' to a precise and selective removal of ore while leaving the remaining structure as undamaged as possible. To reach this position has involved the development of equipment and explosives to give the desired results. This paper reviews some aspects of long hole stope production drilling.

TSL Concepts and Practical Examples of the Non-Reactive System - Meyco TSL 865 Thin Spray-on Liners (TSLs) have been intensively investigated by mining and chemical industries within the last decade. Apart from the basic concept of spraying thin liners, expectations of the product's performance vary, eg immediate active strata support is seen as a key to control the ground permanently. For many coal mines this is an important factor to reduce maintenance in their roadways and enable permanent production from the long wall. In opposition to a passive mesh system this technology offers immediate active support to the strata. But not only coal mines are interested in TSL technology, there are potential applications in hard rock mines, during shaft sinking, pillar support and as an anti-weathering sealant. This paper will explain the advantages and disadvantages of TSL concepts; it will give examples of successfully applied TSLs with a main focus on the non-reactive and flexible system MEYCO TSL 865 by BASF. Furthermore, it will indicate the limitations and discuss briefly the bearing capacity and reasonable lab testing of such systems.

In terms of underground tunnelling in metres advance per capita, Australasia compares well with the best world performers. This is because of the large number of metalliferous mines, coalmines and civil tunnelling projects, with the Australian tunnel advance for civil and mining projects exceeding 625?km/a. In terms of hard rock quarry extraction, Australia produces approximately 200?Mt/a of aggregates, roadbase, fill material and specialist rock products from its quarries, which equates to approximately 8?t/capita. Australian mining and tunnelling contractors are also of world standard and are used to excavating in a variable range of ground conditions in a competitive environment. One author has been involved in tunnel and underground space planning and quarrying in Australia for the past 25 years and predicts that, over the next 20 years, there will be a major swing towards underground space for commercial uses. This paper identifies the potential uses of underground commercial excavation and the planning and geotechnical challenges for the future. Underground quarrying creates new opportunities to extend existing quarries within their urban footprint with minimum impact on the surrounding community. Investigations by the authors reveal that there are very few cities in the world that actually incorporate underground space planning in their city plans. However, cities such as Helsinki have been planned in detail to utilise the rock resources beneath them. ‘Every mine is a pilot’ is an attitude which encourages the mining paradox of optimistic mine plans and equipment under performance; propped up by an environment lacking accountability. The premise that ‘every mine is a pilot’, appears to underlie the development and operating approach to most mines. It is the hypothesis of this paper that many mining companies, development teams and their managers largely ignore what is done elsewhere. Anecdotally, most planners don’t know whether the selected rates are high or low (rates based on theoretical models tend to be high – certainly higher than what most companies can achieve). Mines then consistently operate the equipment at rates well below targets; often more than 20 per cent below. Further to this paradox, mine performance data demonstrates the average mine is currently operating their equipment at levels of output not much more than half the output of those in the top ten per cent. On the whole mines don’t know the potential of their equipment and therefore don’t put appropriate plans in place to do better. After all, when ‘every mine is a pilot’ there is little reason to look to one’s peers for an indication of potential. This paper will outline why every mine is not a pilot and how mines do value some knowledge, but not as much as they should. This paper proposes a two-pronged approach to address this issue in the area of equipment performance. Magnetic separation equipment has long been used to upgrade and beneficiate a wide variety of minerals and materials. Over the years, significant advances in both wet and dry magnetic separators have improved their operability and separation performances, broadening their use.But no one answer exists to the question: what is the right type of magnetic separator? For many minerals, including ilmenite, both process routes may be viable. There are technical, production, as well as economic reasons for choosing wet versus dry. However, recent developments illustrate that a new generation of wet magnetic separators is approaching performance once seen only in dry magnetic separation. With quality and production performance becoming similar, the choice between wet and dry magnetic separation is not as cut and dry as it once was.

An 8 ha trial landform was constructed in late 2009 at the Ranger Uranium Mine, located 250 km east of Darwin in the wet-dry monsoonal tropics of northern Australia. The objective of the trial, which comprises two surface cover types on a uniform two per cent slope, is to provide long-term data to guide the development by Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA) of its landform closure strategy. The scope of the work program for the landform includes many aspects; however, this paper is focusing on run-off and erosion rates. The run-off and erosion rates are used to assess the long-term geomorphic stability by comparing measured with modelled export rates from a landform evolution model.Monitoring of wet season run-off is undertaken collaboratively by the Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist (ERISS) and ERA, on four purpose-instrumented 30 m by 30 m erosion plots. Continuous measurements are made in rectangular broad crested (RBC) flumes located at the outflow of each plot, of water level, turbidity (a surrogate for fine suspended sediment) and electrical conductivity (EC) (a surrogate for solutes). Each plot has a tipping bucket pluviometer located near the RBC flume. Bed load is collected monthly.This paper reports the findings of rainfall and bed load from the first two wet seasons (2009 - 2010 and 2010 - 2011) following construction. The field measured loads will be compared with the predictions made by the Cellular Automaton Evolutionary Slope and River (CAESAR) landform evolution model. Initial results indicate that predicted rates of sediment export from the CAESAR model are similar to measured export rates. This provides confidence in the capability of the model to predict stability of the future rehabilitated mine area, especially during the critical initial years following construction. The lowering of the pollutant concentration limits at the workplace subjects the mining industry to higher requirements for dilution; this situation is worsened with the current discussions within the European Union (EU) to set new stricter exposure limits for nitrogen oxides in the workplace. This is directly reflected in the performance of the mine ventilation system, which may need to be revised to meet the new standards. The after blast re-entry time, being inversely proportional to the threshold limits, will be higher for a lower limit. This in turn increases the down time for production from the blasted area.Numerical tools have been very useful in predicting the effectiveness of ventilation. This study aims at analysing the dilution time for NOx gases from an ANFO blast in a room and pillar panel. To speed up multivariate geostatistical simulation it is common to transform the set of attributes into spatially uncorrelated factors that can be simulated independently. One decorrelation method is the method of minimum/maximum autocorrelation factors (MAF), where a two structure linear model of coregionalisation is assumed. The transformation decorrelates the theoretical model exactly, but the actual data are only approximately decorrelated. The MAF transformation can therefore be seen as a special case of a non-orthogonal approximate diagonaliser of a set of symmetric matrices. A more general approach for approximate joint diagonalisation (AJD) has been developed in the context of blind source separation. For these AJD algorithms no assumptions are made beyond symmetry of the individual matrices and so they can be applied to a family of experimental semivariogram matrices. In their application there are no restrictions on the number of structures in the linear model of coregionalisation (LMC) thus removing one of the conditions placed on the subsequent modelling of the spatial structure of the factors. In this paper the general background for the U-WEDGE AJD method is presented. It is shown that the U-WEDGE method achieves better spatial decorrelation than the MAF method. The factors derived from U-WEDGE are simulated using conditional turning bands simulation and then backtransformed to attribute space.
