The requirement for secondary egress from underground workings has long been regulated in Australia. Escape way systems have evolved from simple airleg rising ladders and timber ladders to steel galvanised ladders and more recently fully enclosed polyethylene ladders.The polyethylene ladder, Safescape Laddertube, was introduced to the underground mining industry in 2010. It is an enclosed cylindrical modular plastic ladder designed for use in underground escape ways and access ways. Since its first installation in May 2010, the Laddertube has been installed in 43 mines across four countries, totalling 8800 m of ladders installed to December 2013.The Cracow Gold mine is one operation using Laddertube, located 500 km north-west of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Upon discovering and developing both the Empire and Roses Pride orebodies, a safe and economically viable secondary egress system and surface primary ventilation exhaust shafts were necessary to support development and production activities to these workings. The need arose to merge these two critical requirements together between surface and underground mine workings some 200 m and 400 m respectively for each orebody. Neither egress has intermediate access points within their full service length from top to bottom. Several options were considered, the preferable and most feasible method adopted was Laddertube.The longest egress length requiring Laddertube within the two vertical surface exhaust shafts was 400 m long, within a 3.5 m diameter shaft. Due to the length of the vertical Laddertube system in both egresses, personnel are to be assisted by mechanical means using the Extended Ladder Climb Assist system.The Gossan Hill mine also uses Laddertube for their escape ways. Part of the Golden Grove operation, Gossan Hill is an underground sublevel open stoping mine located in the mid-west of Western Australia.With a considerable mine life remaining and a history of acidic water and stress related deterioration in vertical openings, the mine operators sought an escape way solution that would provide for the long-term needs of Gossan Hill. Laddertube was selected due to its non-corrosive properties and the ability to fill in around the ladder way to provide stability to the raise opening.Laddertube is a recent development in escape way systems, and is effectively being applied in a variety of operations, meeting the specific needs of underground mines.CITATION:Durkin, S, Hawkins, B and Lawrence, V, 2014. The Mt Keith Mining Alliance operates a fleet of large capacity hydraulic face shovels and more than 40 X 240 t capacity haul trucks to deliver annual production in excess of 40 Mbcm per annum. The Mt Keith Nickel mine is currently operating at a depth to 300 m below surface with a planned final depth of the order of 500 m. As is the case with any large open pit managing the health of the workforce on continuous shift operations is of critical importance to achieving outstanding safety and production outcomes. Fatigue management at Mt Keith is effectively managed by the personnel operating the mining equipment, with assistance and understanding of the management team and supervisors. The program has been driven through the introduction of Fatigue Champions and a comprehensive management plan that includes education, individual health plans and the use of new technologies. Mt Keith has been instrumental in trialling new technology which assists in monitoring fatigue in operations personnel. Insight into these developments is provided in the context of the overall fatigue management plan. The field trials of the OptAlert(TM) system and how it assists in measuring fatigue is explained. The implications for individual operators and the context for a fleet wide approach to fatigue management is also discussed. Mt Keith has recently completed the second phase of trials with the result that this new and exciting technology is being considered for adoption globally across BHP BillitonÆs open pit mining operations.

Current low prices for many metals mean that deposits have to be mined at high cut-offs (relative to their mean grade), which means that only a small percentage of mining blocks are above cut-off. Worse, at such high cut-offs, the blocks above cut-off are usually not grouped into convenient clumps for mining; they tend to be split into small isolated patches that are difficult to reach and hence expensive to extract. Companies wishing to acquire mineral properties have to be able to work out quickly what percentage of blocks are above cut-off and what can effectively be mined given the mining method envisaged. Moreover they need this information within a relatively short-time. The work presented here relates to typical South African gold mines (ie tabular orebodies) but the long-term objective is to develop tools for quantifying the impact of reserve breakup at high cut-offs for a wide range of underground mines including those that are not tabular. The mining method and the sampling procedure determine whether ore blocks can effectively be located and extracted economically. This project studied the impact of these two factors on the recoverable reserves for Witwatersrand gold mines. In order to be repeatable, the tests were done on numerical models of the deposit obtained by geostatistical simulations. To ensure realism, the orebody model and the mining scenarios were based on a specific mine. The recoverable reserves (ore tonnage above cut-off, the corresponding metal quantity and the average grade) were calculated for a wide range of cut-offs for four mining scenarios, as well as for the base case of free selection: ò Scenario 1: Blocks are taken if their true grade is above cut-off and if they are accessible from a raiseline (no information effect, no marginal blocks). ò Scenario 2: In addition to the accessible pay blocks, adjoining marginal blocks are taken (no information effect, + marginal blocks). ò Scenario 3: Blocks are taken if their estimated grade is above cut-off and if they are accessible from a raiseline. Here the estimator is the average of the face samples (information effect, no marginal blocks): ò Scenario 4: Accessible pay blocks are taken if their estimated grade is above cut-off. Adjoining marginal blocksare also taken (information effect, + marginal blocks). ò Free selection: All blocks whose true grade is above cut-off are taken irrespective of their accessibility. The results can be presented in different ways, for example by plotting ore tonnage above cut-off versus cut-off grade, or metal tonnage above cut-off versus cut-off grade etc. As expected, this shows the hierarchy between the five scenarios from the free selection base case to scenario No 2 (true accumulations, pay +

One of the main energy efficiency opportunities identified from the majority of mine site energy audits is to optimize the comminution circuit to reduce energy consumption through improved throughput and product size distribution. Typical analysis reviews comminution process efficiency/inefficiency i.e. utilization of grinding mills, process bottlenecks and product vs. target size, to identify instances of overgrinding or undergrinding. From this, it is possible to establish the potential improvement that could be gained through formal plant optimization and what the optimization program would entail. It can also sometimes reveal immediate opportunities for process improvement. This paper presents steps that can be taken to optimize the efficiency of comminution circuits.

New Zealand contract mining has been well established for close to 50 years. The opencast industry has grown from mining quantities of less than 1 million bcm per year in the 1950s to around 20 million bcm in the late 1990s. Trends here are following those in other countries with mining companies looking to contract out more of the so called traditional mining work. The key driver behind this trend is not unique to the mining industry, but is simply a matter of concentrating on doing a few things well. In the case of the mining company this has come to mean owning and developing orebodies and where appropriate, marketing mining products, and leaving owning and operating of mining fleets to the contractor. This has the effect of reducing risk to the mining company as well as lowering costs. Both can be achieved without losing control of the key elements of the operation. Optimising performance is simply a matter of identifying the key drivers behind performance, having the right plant and the right people at the right place and providing these people with the information they need to manage the operation.

A critical issue associated with mining operations has been the stability of tailings impoundments. Some breach events have produced catastrophic tailings flows that have caused significant economic damage, mass casualties and long-lasting environmental impact in the downstream environment. This paper reports independently estimated values of runout distance, inundation area and fahrboschung of 16 tailings flows. The adopted methodology involves the geospatial analysis of satellite and aerial imagery to classify each tailings flow into a primary impact zone (Zone 1: main overland flow) and a secondary impact zone (Zone 2: along-creek diluted flow) to characterise runout. Only Zone 1 runout values are reported herein given the greater significance in relation to downstream impact. The fahrboschung is calculated using elevation data from global 30 m digital elevation models (DEMs) and source literature. The results show that all the selected tailings flows travelled long distances (2.4 km to 98.5 km) and inundated large areas (0.35 km2 to 27.0 km2) over very low fahrboschung values (0.04° to 4.8°). This indicates very high flow mobility that is largely governed by the high water content sourced from interstitial waters and, in many cases, supernatant ponds. Scatter plots display poor correlations owing to the complexity and variability in travel path characteristics (confinement, slope angle and obstructions) and the inherent properties of the flowing mass. The slope angle of the travel path exerts a strong control over the flow velocity which has implications on kinetic energy and downstream geomorphological impact. Mean tailings flow velocities may range from ~6 m/s on near-flat, open terrain to over 30 m/s in relatively steeper, channelised travel paths, indicating that tailings flows fall within the extremely rapid and high mobility spectrum of global mass movements. The presented work forms an inceptive part of the CanBreach tailings project, a major component of which is to develop a comprehensive database of case histories to examine the role of geotechnics, failure modes and downstream terrains in influencing tailings flow behaviour.

In a gold CIP/CIL circuit, adding new circuit water to a final tails thickener and then directing the thickener overflow to the head of the circuit significantly reduces the cyanide concentration at the TSF discharge spigot. The new water is used to dilute the final tails. The dilution and recycle of the tails in this manner may have the added benefit of reducing reagent consumption, in some cases to the point where the reagent savings justify the expenditure and Cyanide Code compliance is achieved at no extra cost. Potential circuit configurations and water recycles can be modelled by splicing a flowsheeting and thermodynamics package, such that changes to the composition of the water can be reduced to chemical speciation with a Gibbs free energy minimisation enabling a complete understanding of the circuit water chemistry.

"Automated mining systems are increasingly being seen as a key requirement for a productive mining operation in the future. The importance of an integrated communication network infrastructure to support such systems is growing.This paper outlines the introduction of automated mining systems in large conventional mines as well as their growing role in block cave mines currently operating or being developed. The paper will then focus on a case study of how the communication infrastructure is fundamental to the operation of such systems and explain why the resultant communication networks require much more than just increased bandwidth (data capacity) to properly support the automation system within the overall mine operation.Mining operations already embarking down this road are discovering that the required network must be based on a true enterprise level architecture to not only enable the mine’s current plans for remote and automated mining, but also provide a scalable and integrated platform for future developments and requirements. The emerging issues for the communication network to truly support automation systems include: increased complexities of operating and maintaining multiple networks integration issues with disparate systems problems with reporting particularly as demands for corporate reporting and compatibility with enterprise systems become the norm ongoing management challenges, which will only increase with the proliferation of new technologies.The paper will explore how certain mining operations are addressing this by adopting a long-term strategy for automation deployment, which includes laying the necessary foundation architecture to meet their current requirements, while supporting their future visions for the fully automated mine.CITATION:Paine, R and Kent, D, 2014. A strategic mine plan is a fundamental part of any mining operation. It must provide a realistic and operative extraction and processing schedule, and yield the highest value for the business. For open pit mines, the problem can be modelled as a set of blocks representing the deposit, for each of which we need to decide if it is going to be mined, if so, when and where it will be sent (process, stock or dump).This problem can be proven to be of NP-Hard complexity. The traditional approach used by mining engineers to tackle this complexity is to separate the problem into more tractable components, solving each separately. The first step is to use the Lerchs-Grossman (LG) algorithm to obtain the final pit limit, as well as a set of optimised pit shells (nested pits), using different input prices. Then, using this input, operational phases are designed. Third, the set of phases can be used as an input for a phase-bench style optimisation, usually using a mathematical programming-based algorithm.There are, however, several problems with this approach. First, dividing the problem into simpler parts has the consequence that any compromises made at early stages limit the potential value left for the following steps. Second, LG is a static algorithm, with no concept of the time-value of money, capacity limits, opportunity costs, etc. Phase design is essentially a manual step, for which nested pits provide insufficient information in practice, and therefore the quality of the result in terms of potential net present value (NPV) depends strongly on the experience and expertise of the designer. This means that key input data such as commodity prices, different processes capacities and mine movement limits, are considered only at scheduling, when there is little room for optimisation. This sequential approach limits the potential value in each step, where a simplified problem is addressed, instead of addressing the real, and more complex problem, which is dynamic and should be solved as a whole.We present in this paper an algorithm, and its commercial software implementation, that addresses the dynamic problem as a whole, simultaneously and automatically creating a high-value strategic mine plan that adheres to basic operational constraints, determining dynamic cut-off grades and delivering a set of phases which can serve as a much stronger guide than nested pits for the final design. We discuss some of the key elements of the algorithm and propose a new methodology for strategic mine planning, where phase design dynamically responds to mining strategy definition. In flotation simulation models, the effects of pulp chemistry other than pH are often ignored and reduced to particles hydrophobicity or contact angle, neither of which can be measured readily in real time in an operating plant. The flotation response of a given sulphide mineral is known to be influenced and can be improved by changing the chemical characteristics of the pulp during grinding and flotation. The on-line measurement of pulp pH, potential, dissolved oxygen, temperature and oxygen demand of a process stream was completed with the PCM® (Pulp Chemistry Monitor) developed by Magotteaux in this study. The data generated together with relevant plant operating parameters were used to construct an empirical model and simulate the metallurgical performance of the ore. The same approach was also applied to laboratory flotation tests data using various grinding media types. Traditional engineering practice for concentrator design uses a mixture of risk minimisation options and capital minimisation approaches. Often this is based on the preferences and experiences of the engineers involved.A geometallurgical approach involves identifying primary lithology, alteration, and mineral dispersion patterns within a deposit to allow representative samples for test programs. This provides a method to infer from laboratory test results meaningful production data for larger amounts of the ore body. Geometallurgical models can be integrated into the resource block model and subsequent mine plan and can assist in predicting when difficulties in the processing route might be expected, allow adjustment of the design to compensate for these or provide an early warning system so that production forecasts can be more adequately developed. Simulation modelling is the process of creating a computer model of a real system based on mathematical logic. In simulated time, the model explores the randomness and chronological sequencing of events observed on real systems. The objective is to mimic the real system with sufficient accuracy to make predictions of real behaviour under experimental conditions. Amec Foster Wheeler often use the ‘discrete-event’ simulation modelling technique. This method is well suited for inclusion of the statistical variation of effects in unit operation, mechanical availability, throughput and operating strategy (based on historical operating data for equipment downtime), operating schedules and equipment capacity. With the advances in software speed and capability, many of us now are running multiple scenarios on entire models rather than just testing small areas or a few blocks. In the authors experience both the geological and geostatistical academic theory and our rules of thumb, often prove un-useable or incorrect in the real world we work in. The only way to truly validate and tune our models is to complete the entire model and ‘see if it works’. If it lacks some property we were expecting, then we need to find out why and/or run different scenarios to see what changes. This is not always possible with tight project timelines but we find ourselves doing more and more of this sort of thing, and in so doing, understand that every deposit is different and requires its own ‘rules’ to get valid and useful results. For the purposes of this paper, this process is termed Empirical Geostatistics. Take Clayton Deutsch’s ‘all realisations all of the time’ concept a step back. Before you even think of simulating, test the alternate realisations generated by alternate parameters such as different domaining, varying search neighbourhood parameters etc.

This research is about human development and socio-economic progress of the main mining areas of Chile in the period 1990 - 2007, and especially about the positive effects that mining activity has on poverty reduction and indicators related to the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations. The analysis is doubly interesting, if one considers that the economic and social developments in Chile, recognised and prominent among the Latin American economies and developing nations, are more evident in mining areas as Tarapacß and Antofagasta (northern Chile), which concentrated than more 70 per cent of investments and mining assets in the country. Additionally, the study concludes with methodological reflections for the evaluation of socio-economic impact in the mining industry in developing countries.

The Selwyn Gold-Copper Mine is located 150 km southeast of Mount Isa within Proterozoic units of the Mount Isa inlier (Figure 1). Mineralization in the mine area is associated with strongly sheared ironstones and iron rich schists at the base of the mid- Proterozoic Staveley Formation. The ironstone horizons outcrop as a series of dominant ridges over a 10 km strike. Economic gold-copper mineralization has been defined in 4 separate zones within a 3.5 km length of the outcropping ridges. A current combined geological resource for the deposits is 5.3 million tonnes of 5.0 g/t Au and 2.02 Cu. Weathering of the deposits has resulted in a pronounced vertical zonation of mineralogy, especially copper, within the ore zones. This has produced 3 separate ore types which require different treatment techniques. The categorization is based on copper content and zones are termed leached (surface), oxide and sulfide. Ore removed from the pits will be mainly leached and oxidized with minor sulfide near the pits final depths, while the underground ore will be from the sulfide zone with minor oxide in some areas.

Occurrence data of Tastubian,Sterlitamakian, and Aktastinian (all of Sakmarian Stage of Early Permian) brachiopod genera are analysed by Q-mode cluster analysis, principal component analysis, and discriminant analysis based on presence or absence of genera. Five faunal provinces and their corresponding generic associations persisted throughout the Sakmarian Stage. The additional Sasian Province incorporating the Lhasa and Shan-Thai terranes became recognisable in Sterlitarakian and strengthened in òAktastinian, implying a Tastubian-Sterlitamakian rifting event, followed by subsequent northward drift and divergence from Gondwana, and convergence with Laurasia. The nature of Permian 'Tethys' is discussed on the basis of faunal migration and abrupt changes of faunal provinciality in Lhasa and Shan-Thai terranes.

The complexity in treating environmentally harmful impurities such as As, Sb, Bi from the base metal matte or metal in the smelting stage are responsible for the high cost of the refining process. The impurity capacities (such as arsenic, antimony and bismuth) of slags were calculated a priori using Reddy-Blander (RB) model. The capacity predictions were for a wide range of matte and slag compositions in copper smelting conditions. The calculated impurities capacities and impurity distribution ratios results are in good agreement with the available experimental and industrial slags data. The a priori knowledge of impurities is useful for reduction of energy consumption and enhanced environmental control in the current and future non-ferrous metal processes.

The Douglas mineral sands deposit is located 75 km north of Hamilton in western Victoria, Australia. The deposit was discovered in the late 1990s by Basin Minerals Limited and purchased by Iluka Resources Ltd in 2002. Prestrip mining commenced in December 2004, with ore mining commencing in August 2005. Douglas is the first of several projects being implemented by Iluka Resources Ltd in the Murray Basin, with all heavy mineral concentrate planned to be treated at the companyÆs mineral separation plant in Hamilton. The mineralisation at Douglas lies along the south-eastern margin of the Murray Basin. It is hosted by marine Pliocene Loxton-Parilla Sands and consists of three discrete deposits; Bondi Main, Bondi West and Bondi East. The mineralised sediments dip at a low angle to the west and lie unconformably beneath a veneer of top soil (50 - 100 mm) and subsoil (up to 600 mm) and between three to 12 m of overburden. The barren overburden, characterised by high clay content (<53 ¦m material) generally provides a stark contrast to the sandy ore, which is between 1 m (parts of Bondi East) and 15 m (Bondi Main) thick. Both overburden and ore are removed utilising standard dry mining techniques using both scraper-bulldozer and truck-excavator combinations. All ore is delivered to run-of-mine (ROM) stockpiles before being reclaimed by front end loader into the processing plant. Grade control at Douglas is based around visual dig control aided by high precision survey, which enables accurate reference to the resource drilling and block model data. Vertical excavator faces, inclined scraper faces plus regular test pits and trenches provide opportunities for in pit mapping and sampling. This data is used to refine not only the resource estimate for Douglas but also the drilling, interpretation and resource modelling methods used for similar deposits across the basin. The foundations of the geological reconciliation process at Douglas are the in pit surveys undertaken each time the mining fleet has completed building a ROM stockpile. These surveys and the subsequent interrogation of resource models enable robust estimations of the heavy mineral content of the stockpiles, which are subsequently used to predict the daily input grades into the plant during their reclamation. Reconciliation of this daily data is then undertaken at the end of each month against metallurgical production data and plant balances. Learnings and results from the reconciliation process are used to further refine subsequent resource models and modelling methods.

Legislation up to the early 1950s prevented the mechanical extraction of pillars. The mines operating at that time had formed extensive areas of pillars. When permission for the mechanical extraction was gazetted, conventional equipment was employed for pillar extraction and generally using hand mining systems. The mid-fifty's saw the of continuous miners. These machines eliminated the disadvantages of conventional equipment and the necessity for multiple working places. Some new layouts for panels emerged; however, actual extraction methods of pillars still followed closely that of hand mining. During the early sixty's the extraction of standing or new formed pillars was undertaken by the "open-end lift" or a "split and lift" method.

Northern Star Resources (NSR) operates several operations utilising narrow vein stoping operations in the Kundana area. Stope dilution performance is variable across these operations, with unplanned dilution reducing individual stope economic viability, increasing risk to personnel and machinery operating in and around the stope and delaying the overall stoping sequence. Technical investigations were undertaken to objectively understand the variables which had the largest impact on stope performance and then use the findings to help develop mining strategies to reduce dilution. A stope reconciliation process was developed to compile key stope performance information such as stope design parameters, geotechnical and drill and blast factors. These were compared against the measured dilution. Production targets necessitated a high turnover of stopes in the operations, and hence a requirement for an expeditious process and mine design software with automated tools. The output of these results, together with numerical variables from geological, geotechnical and drill and blast data were analysed via multivariate regression. The analysis identified the factors with the greatest influence over stope dilution, and a forecast model was consequently created. Confidence was gained in the model when the subsequent stopes performed in line with prediction. Different drill and blast designs were subsequently trialled and found to reduce dilution. The model was then updated with the new practices, facilitating further regression analysis to identify revised key controlling factors. The subsequent production results however, displayed a poor correlation with the prediction from the revised model. Inconsistencies in drill and blast designs and execution were identified as key factors in the dilution performance. This was an important finding as the correct implementation of the design is critical and this has become a key focus for future stoping. Overall the technique presents an objective process to identify causal factors of stope dilution resulting in improved economic metrics for stope production. The process will be applied to other similar Northern Star operations.

Reprocessing Queensland’s historical copper tailings for critical minerals is an opportunity to circularise the state’s mining industry by converting waste liabilities into assets. Mine waste valorisation enables economic rehabilitation of legacy mining sites, improves environmental outcomes, and can establish a secondary resources sector that produces a sustainable supply of critical minerals to supplement growing global demands (Australian Government, 2023). The North-West Queensland Minerals Province (NWQMP) hosts numerous copper mines with known cobalt mineralisation (Degeling, 2020). Cobalt is a critical metal essential for green energy and battery technologies, however its global supply is at risk due to geopolitical and ethical concerns (Rachidi et al, 2021). Historically mining in the NWQMP has focused on copper, leaving cobalt to theoretically accumulate in the mine waste. First-pass geometallurgical characterisation of waste repositories by the Sustainable Minerals Institute identified Capricorn Copper as a key site for further investigation into cobalt deportment and recovery potential.
