Froth flotation processes use different surface properties of the minerals to be sorted. In an aqueous environment the hydrophobic mineral attaches selectively to air bubbles and is lifted to the surface of a separation vessel, while the tailings settle towards its bottom. Besides the surface properties, the hydrodynamic conditions play an important role. With respect to the hydrodynamics the flotation process can be divided, for simplicity, in two sub-processes. The attachment of hydrophobic particles to air bubbles, the so-called mineralisation, demands a large number of collisions and therefore high turbulences. The phase separation however needs a deterministic movement of both the particle-bubbles-aggregates and the tailings particles and therefore a quiescent flow field. The optimisation of the overall process requires a separation of both sub-processes, especially when fine particles have to be sorted. In conventional mechanically agitated flotation cells both sub-processes take place in the same turbulent volume. For this reason they suffer from a decreasing selectivity with decreasing particle size. In flotation columns the mineralisation of air bubbles and the phase separation are performed in a quiescent environment. This results in high concentrate grades and at the same time in a very slow attachment kinetics, which must, especially for fine particles, be counterbalanced by a long residence time of the slurry.

A venturi based multi-scrubber air cleaning system has been developed for dust control along a longwall face in coal mines. The system consists of a number of scrubbers. strategically placed along the wall face which deliver cleaned air at high exhaust velocity into the middle section of the longwall cross-section thus dividing it into two zones. The aim is to maintain the walkway on the powered support side as a zone of relatively clean air. Laboratory studies have shown that the scrubber's average efficiency is 90 per cent. Field trials in three longwall faces have shown that. under normal operating conditions. 40 to 50 per cent average protection efficiency can be achieved within 3 m to 4 m downstream of the scrubber. A three-dimensional finite element computational fluid dynamic model. FIDAP. was used to simulate the airflow patterns the dust concentration and the scrubber dust control technique at a typical longwall face. Results of simulations tally very well with the field results.

Determination of stress-strain behaviour of rocks plays a crucial role in understanding the response of rocks during loading. However, it is a tedious, expensive and a time-consuming process to obtain such characteristics both in the laboratory and in situ. On the other hand, non-destructive testing methods such as ultrasonic velocities can produce a reliable and fast solution to indentify state of strain and stress in rocks. The present paper aims to provide insight into the relations amongst ultrasonic wave velocities, amplitudes and deformability properties of porous siltstone under compressive loading. For this purpose, pulse (vP) and shear wave velocities (vS) along with amplitudes (AP - AS), and applied loads with resultant strain were measured simultaneously so that response of siltstone to compression can be evaluated. In addition, initial vP and vS were recorded at the beginning of each test to calculate dynamic elastic properties of the specimens. This provided a comparison between static and dynamic elasticity properties of siltstone. Crack damage associated with the onset of dilation was also investigated. The results showed that there is a non-linear logarithmic relation between velocities and stress-strain level for siltstones.

Veolia Water Technologies was contracted by a global coal mining company to design a retrofit acid mine drainage treatment facility using DenseSludge™ technology on a former coal refuse disposal site. The project constraint was to reuse current facilities in order to reduce additional capital work cost and avoid additional footprint requirements while improving treatment performance and reducing sludge production and chemical consumption. The initial installation of 454 m3/h served as a pilot plant to demonstrate the benefits of the process and ultimately provided design criteria for the new facility. The pilot demonstrated the benefit of the technology by reducing sludge volume by 90 per cent compared to conventional processes currently in use. The sludge that is reinjected into the mine contains less water, which reduces the volume of water that returns to the mine pool for treatment and mine water balance. Furthermore, the pilot plant reduced lime usage compared to conventional processes by operating at a lower pH set point, demonstrating steady pH control and stoichiometric lime utilisation.CITATION:Dube, C and Banerjee, K, 2015. The South Deep surface shaft system is being sunk to a final depth of 2750 in below surface and on completion will be the deepest single drop haft in the world. The shafts will intersect the target reef horizon at 2650 to below surface. In order to negate the requirement for a shaft pillar, which would he extremely large at this depth, the reef horizon in the vicinity of the intersection is currently being mined. A high quality crushed waste/classified tailings backfill is being placed in the longwall stoping panels around the shaft intersection area. This kill limit closure and ride which following shaft reef intersection could have a detrimental effect on the long term shaft stability. This paper discusses underground instrumentation results and numerical modelling exercises carried out to confirm that the shaft system will he stable throughout the life of the mine. Instrumentation projects include closure and ride measured between backfill paddocks and haulage leveling exercises carried out to determine the far field rockmass response to mining with stiff backfill.

A brief history of the mineral sands industry is given from a radiation protection standpoint, with gamma radiation and inhalation of radioactive dust being identified as the main sources of radiation exposure of persons working in the plants. The principal sources of gamma radiation exposure are identified and the history of early bagging methods is discussed. The concept of ALARA is introduced and the impact of the "bulka bags" (and more effective monazite storage facilities) are detailed as illustrative examples of dose minimization, together with the requirements for the transport of monazite. The dose from radiation received from inhaled dust is dependent on a number of parameters of the dust, some of which are not well known. ICRP 30 (1978) makes recommendations relating to the intake of radionuclides by workers. These recommendations are discussed with respect to the inhalation of dust containing thorium. The possible pathways of radioactive material throughout the body are also described. The effect of having parameters that differ from ICRP 30 is discussed and suggestions are made relating to measurements that can be carried out to more accurately determine these parameters. Since in some instances the exposures to dust yield personal doses which may exceed the annual ICRP 30 based limits, it is necessary to define more accurately parameters of the dust so as to determine more accurately personal Doses.

Fume events in coalmines are typically associated with wet conditions, soft ground and deep holes. An ACARP research project used laboratory and field testing combined with literature reviews, numerical models and field investigations to characterise the influence of these conditions on the propensity for fume. This paper highlights the results for soft ground and wet conditions and proposes a proactive fume mitigation methodology. A simple numerical model is used to show how fume arises in soft rock that yields more under the loading of high-pressure, water-resistant explosive blends than for ANFO. The blends cool more rapidly after detonation into the lower temperature zone favourable for NO2 production. Low-pressure, high detonation temperature explosives are loaded or charged into soft ground. Water resistance must be considered because soft, faulted and fractured ground can lead to fume from degradation by water flow and non-ideal detonation of product in cracks.A suite of tests were developed to quantify ANFO and emulsion blend performance over time that can be carried out in a mobile laboratory on-site. Index tests such as viscosity measurement and water resistance in beakers are proposed to quantify long-term product performance because small components, such as surfactant, prill impurities and prill fines, contribute to inconsistent product performance. Water ingress experiments and detonation tests aligned with field investigations identified and characterised the role of groundwater in damaging ANFO and causing fume.Fume risk management is achieved using a proposed proactive fume mitigation methodology to characterise influences such as seasonal rain variation, groundwater flow hydrogeology, rock mass strength and structure well ahead of blast design. In taking the chair at this meeting of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, I feel it my duty to thank you for the honour you have conferred upon me by electing me President for the current year, especially as Bwken Hill is the birth place of the Institute and myself one of its foundation members. I will now endeavour to entertain you for a short time with a few reminiscences of Broken Hill from its inception. Beyond the fact that the mines on the Broken Hill lode have paid to their shareholders in dividends and bonuses no less a sum than £896,500, created and maintained a city of 25,000 inhabitants. supplied a large proportion of the revenue on the railways of a sister state, and made their influence felt throughout the 'commercial centres of the world, very little, I regret to say, is known by the general public as to the form, extent, or vastness of the ore bodies, or the mode of occurrence of the various classes of ore which have been found to exist in them. It has occurred to me that a short paper by the senior mining manager on the line of lode might prove interesting. There has been great difficulty in getting some of the figures relating to the field, the total output of metals from the Broken Hill mines not being obtainable from the Mining Department in Sydney j but an inscription on the foundation stone of the Technical College recently opened in this City, sets forth that the Broken Hill Mines started in 1880...

As mining and extraction processes improve and lower grade ores become economic, mining for most ores have extended to depths beneath the zone of weathering oxidation created over geological history. These deeper openings expose sulphidic formations and reduced mineral species as either primary ore or simply as accessory or gangue minerals in the country rock. This is not new, underground mining for primary base metal and gold have long been familiar with these problems, as have coal and uranium miners. The change is simply that the number of mines exposing sulphidic waste rocks, tailings to the atmosphere and/or leaving behind dewatered sulphidic rock surrounding the mine void has increased the number of sites from where acid mine drainage (AMD) may emanate with consequential problems for the hydrological environment including downstream catchments (Miller et al, 1996). The principles of ecologically sustainable development (Brundtland, 1987) have been more or less ratified by all the developed nations of the world and this has led, amongst other things, to an expansion unprecedented in the research and documentation of means for achieving long-term environmentally acceptable stabilisation of solid wastes of all sorts. These have revealed that AMD problems can be minimised and even reversed in many cases by the integration or co-disposal of biodegradable organic wastes with oxidising sulphidic wastes (Elliott et al, 1996). This paper considers how this might be achieved at mine sites in Australia and the results encountered at some relevant sites.

The Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) has been procuring the expansion of their underground mass rapid transit rail network at a prodigious rate since the first line opened in 1987. Four lines (149 km) are currently operating and several more lines are at various stages of planning/construction; one of these is the Downtown line stage 2 (DTL 2).DTL 2 contract C917 was awarded in September 2009 for S$320 M. On 18 June 2013 the original contractor became insolvent, leaving the works incomplete. Following a fast-tracked tender process, McConnell Dowell was awarded the S$254 M contract on 29 August 2013 to complete the works. This contract includes two underground stations constructed by cut-and-cover methods and twin bored tunnels between the stations. Each tunnel is 1400 m long, excavated by earth pressure balanced (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) at an average depth of 20 m and segment lined to 5.8 m inner diameter. The tunnel alignment is located under a busy five-lane road lined with prime residential real estate and congested with utilities.To compound the difficulty the tunnels are located within the notorious Bukit Timah Granite formation. This has a very wide range of strength, from below 1 MPa to over 300 MPa. This strength range is a consequence of six weathering grades, from soil to fresh rock, with the fresh granite causing severe abrasion problems. The various grades can occur within a very short distance of each other. Consequently, the problem of supporting a mixed face exists, particularly in the intermediate weathering grades where intact rock is encountered in the invert and corestones within a loose soil matrix in the crown, which can increase the instability by allowing the ground to flow into the TBM.The focus of this paper will be the excavation of the bored tunnels by EPB TBM used by McConnell Dowell to complete these challenging works.CITATION:Jones, G and Shepherd, J, 2014. With a worldwide growing population the demand for higher living standards, food and the development of new technology is rapidly rising. To allow for a continuous growth, larger quantities of minerals and raw materials are needed at a faster pace. Different methods have been developed to access or tap ore more quickly, such as improved drill and blast operations, mechanical mining methods using equipment such as roadheaders (RH), longwall miners and other technical equipment. Another possibility to access and develop mines faster is the use of a tunnel boring machine (TBM).The historical usage of TBMs is surprisingly long, but the opportunity for technology adoption by the majority of worldwide mining companies remains largely untapped. Dozens of full face TBMs have been used by mines around the world, including two that will begin operation soon in Australia. TBMs have been used to safely and rapidly gain access to the orebody, or to expand access to the orebody to increase output by running a TBM along the edge of the orebody for several kilometres. These machines have also been used for ventilation and for conveyor tunnels for ore removal. They have been used to quickly excavate long and winding declines giving access to an orebody at several levels in a short period of time.Tunnel boring technology can be used for mine declines, mine access tunnels and all sorts of different mine designs and set-ups. TBM technology simply needs to be adapted to the mine conditions and, if manufacturers are involved early on in the planning process for mine development, the operation can be very successful. In some cases, historically typical mine designs may need to be re-thought.One mine, the Stillwater Platinum mine in Nye, Montana, is currently employing its fourth TBM in 25 years. Two were used to create tunnels running alongside the orebody, rapidly expanding access to the orebody in many locations for increased output. Two were used to create parallel access tunnels to a mine expansion at the East Boulder orebody; one tunnel is for conveyor haulage and the other for vehicular access. TBMs have been employed successfully many times to rapidly drive vehicular decline tunnels to multiple mine levels, such as at the San Manuel – Magma Copper mine in the USA. While TBM technology may not seem to be optimal for every mine, these success stories show that the method can provide vast benefits for the right projects.Early use of TBMs in extremely hard rock metal mines, in the 1960s and 1970s, had limited success since performance was low. However there have been great improvements made over the years in the strength of rock which can be excavated by TBMs with high performance. Other important improvements involve the provision of a safe work environment, safely and rapidly supporting the rock and predicting geology ahead of the TBM.This paper will briefly note the more than 20 TBM mining projects and highlight some notable successes. It will then go on to give a status report on the two active TBM mining projects in Australia and the difference between a TBM operation versus other excavation methods such as drill and blast (D&B) or RH excavation.CITATION:Rauer, M, 2014. Rio Tinto’s Hope Downs Operations are currently mining iron ore in their South Central Pit. Prior to the commencement of mine operations, Hope Downs carried out an extensive archaeological investigation and identified an ancient rock shelter lying within the proposed mine boundaries. The site is significant to the traditional owners/custodians of the land in this part of the Pilbara, and thus the final pit design was changed to preserve the rock shelter, which now lies 30 m outside the mine boundary. In order to further preserve this ancient dwelling from blast-induced damage, blast design procedures were improved over time to minimise the vibration impact when blasting close to the shelter. Blasting and vibration monitoring commenced in May 2008 using pyrotechnic delay sequences and normal-direction firing. In October 2009 electronic delays were used to reverse-fire blasts close to the shelter in order to create a damage zone between the initiating holes and the rock shelter. A detailed statistical analysis of the vibration data shows a reduction in the higher levels of vibration for blasts fired after October 2009, which is most likely caused by the created damage zone. In May 2010, a site-specific vibration model was developed and implemented, and based on Monte Carlo waveform superposition. This model was used to give a further insight and improvement to the blast delay sequences when blasting close to the shelter. However, such models are expensive to implement and have limitations, which reduces their potential for estimating the probability of getting an excessive vibration due to a given blast design. In this regard, it is more realistic and significantly less expensive to use a recently developed probabilistic analysis based on simple charge weight scaling. This analysis shows that there was a higher probability of exceeding prescribed vibration limits at the rock shelter for blasts fired before October 2009 than there was for blasts fired after October 2009.

This paper addresses the problem of prediction of grade variables over volumes (block estimation) for an autonomous mine. Resource estimation is usually concerned with the prediction of the quality of material over volumes (blocks in resource models). This problem is tackled by developing Bayesian block estimation with the Gaussian processes (GPs) framework. GPs are commonly used for nonparametric regression and classification and offer an elegant solution to deal with incomplete knowledge and information. A GP is defined by its mean and covariance function. The parameters of the covariance function can be learnt by maximising the marginal likelihood of the data. This offers a way of automating the covariance fitting process, while at the same time allowing for an assessment of how well the covariance function fits the data. Within the GP framework the calculation of the average grade over a volume can be performed using Bayesian quadrature, which treats an integral as a random variable. First, it is demonstrated that the block kriging equations in geostatistics are the same as Bayesian quadrature. Then, it is determined when closed form analytical solutions for the integrals are possible and quadrature approaches for approximations are briefly discussed.

Copper-Cobalt hydrometallurgy has seen a resurgence in recent years with the development of projects in Zambia and the DRC. Many of the flow sheets are unique in their use of hydrometallurgical techniques to improve performance compared to the older types in current use. The emphasis has moved from direct copper electrowinning/stripping, with multiple stages of precipitation for removal of impurities and concentration of cobalt, to innovative use of solvent extraction and ion exchange with higher cobalt recoveries to final product. The poor quality direct electro-won copper has been supplanted with solvent extraction-electrowinning; with consequent production of LME 'A' quality metal. Many of the precipitation steps in cobalt recovery and concentration, have been replaced with solvent extraction; while the remaining precipitation stages have been enhanced with use of oxidants to improve impurity removal. Operating experience from two of these circuits has shown the benefits of the new technologies and the improved overall recovery of both copper and cobalt into higher quality products.

There are two fundamental methods for metalliferous sensing of primary crushed ore available for deployment at operations. These methods can be classed as surface measurement techniques (including XRF, LIBS, NIR, SWIR) or penetrative/semi-penetrative measurement techniques (including PGNAA, PFTNA, GAA, MR). While the individual sensing technologies exploit different physical phenomena to measure metal content, penetrative sensor measurements of grade are often regarded to be superior to surface measurement techniques due to the much larger sampling volume penetrative techniques provide. Surface sensing techniques often utilise simpler, established technologies that have considerable benefits in the speed of analysis, capital costs, ease of deployment, social license to operate and operational safety. This paper investigates whether surface sensing techniques achieve adequate sampling representativity of primary crushed rock mass to provide economic benefit over penetrative sensing technologies for bulk ore sorting applications. The paper details the methodology used to assess whether surface XRF measurements change throughout various stages of comminution, and increased surface exposure, from primary crushed ore (top size of -175mm) to finely crushed product for assay (top size -2mm). The methodology was applied to 2 ore mineralisation styles, across variable metals and grades, to identify any associated opportunities and limitations to surface sensing techniques. The results assist in developing a method to determine if surface sensing and measuring via XRF is an adequate representation of the rock mass for bulk ore sorting applications and identify any associated limitations in particle size distribution, mineralisation or natural deportment strength to guide suitable application of surface sensing techniques.

Pre-splitting for smooth highwall formation is conducted in around 75 per cent of surface coal operations within Australia. The CMTE (Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment) in conjunction with BHPAC (BHP Australia Coal) initiated a project to look at pre-splitting and to investigate the notching of blastholes for fracture plane control. The notching was specifically for pre-split initiation and also for discing of the toe of the production holes to minimise coal loss from the top of the coal seam. There are currently a number of factors which are driving the introduction of new pre-splitting technologies and products. The first is the ever increasing bench height being employed in strip mines which require a higher quality wall with less blast damage to maintain stability. Currently depths of 55 metres are common place with depths of 70 - 80 metres fast approaching. The second factor is the introduction of new technologies or methods which require a high quality highwall produced, eg highwall mining. This paper discusses the current state-of-the-art in pre-splitting and the main issues facing successful pre-splitting in the future. The use of a blasthole notching technology to promote fracturing along the pre-split line is also analysed. The review indicates that most pre-splitting challenges in the future can be addressed through better use and developments of current drill and blast technology. It is also concluded that a blasthole notching technique may find niche applications in improving final walls within a surface coal mine, especially where a high quality wall is required. The notched blasthole method may also allow pre-splitting in ground conditions and adverse rock structure which currently cannot be pre-split by existing technology.

New developments are taking place in the recovery of gold from leached pulps that are based upon the adsorption of the metal cyanide species onto ion exchange resins. Despite the success of several resin-in-pulp pilot plant operations in the Western World and large-scale plants in the former Soviet Union, the process is yet to gain recognition as a viable alternative to the carbon-in-pulp process. An experimental research program has investigated the use of a variety of different types of resins for the recovery of gold, but to-date no resin studied has the desired properties of high selective loading capacity for gold cyanide and a simple inexpensive elution procedure. In addition very little is known concerning the physical strength of resins and their ability to resist shattering due to osmotic shock during cycles of adsorption and elution. The ability of ion exchange resins to enhance the leaching of refractory and re-adsorbing ores has not been investigated. This paper highlights the necessary factors that need to be addressed before commercialisation of ion exchange technology for gold extraction is feasible.

Fibre-reinforced geopolymer concrete (FRGC) contains no Portland cement or steel reinforcement, but instead uses synthetic fibre reinforcement and a geopolymer binder. The use of geopolymer binder in lieu of Portland cement reduces the concrete’s embedded energy (CO2 emissions) whilst the use of synthetic fibres eliminates the issue of reinforcement corrosion, thus enhancing the overall long-term durability of concrete. This paper presents the development of FRGC during a three-year project funded by the Victorian Science Agenda and a consortium of five organisations. The work involved laboratory and field trials and the production of prototype tunnel segments that have been subject to durability and fire testing.FRGC has exceeded the performance of the Portland cement-based control mix in terms of flexural strength, chloride diffusion, water sorptivity and drying shrinkage. Furthermore, the FRGC segments subjected to a simulated hydrocarbon fire test did not exhibit explosive spalling; however, the creep of FRGC was approximately three times that of the steel fibre-reinforced Portland cement-based control mix. The compressive strength and tensile splitting strength of the FRGC were also lower than the control mix. These differences need to be allowed for in the design using FRGC.Prototype bolted tunnel segments of up to 0.8?t mass have been produced from FRGC using standard production techniques and ambient curing. These were successfully produced within a 24-hour production cycle. Cut sections through the segments showed good compaction and even distribution of fibres. The estimated carbon footprint of tunnel segments produced using FRGC is approximately 70 per cent less than that of Portland cement-based segments containing 25 per cent fly ash and steel reinforcement.The results to date indicate that FRGC has the potential to produce a new generation of tunnel segments and, in general, precast concrete products with increased durability and substantially reduced carbon emissions compared to the Portland cement-based concrete with steel reinforcement.A summary of further research carried out by CH2M HILL into a complete elimination of ferrous inserts from segmental concrete tunnel lining is also summarised in this paper. The use of non-ferrous connectors for radial joints in combination with the FRGC technology in the manufacture of tunnel segments will effectively lead to development of a new generation of segmental tunnel lining systems.CITATION:Wimpenny, D, Chappell, M and Wieloch, M, 2014. Mine-derived solutes from Energy Resources of Australia’s (ERA’s) Ranger uranium mine have been closely monitored for decades. Ranger is surrounded by the Northern Territory’s Kakadu National Park and is upstream of Ramsar convention wetlands. Modelling of groundwater flow and solute egress from mine wastes to surface waters has helped ERA successfully assess closure options and secure intermediate regulatory approvals during the site closure process. Potential environmental impacts were assessed using groundwater modelling in support of three ERA applications involving disposal of tailings-derived mine waste. Model results were an important part of the basis for obtaining regulatory approval. Three case studies are presented describing the three applications and how the groundwater modelling supported approval of the applications. For case study #1, INTERA supported ERA in addressing stakeholder concerns in 2017 regarding two aspects of tailings deposition in Pit 3. The first was the potential for flow of tailings fluid into the surrounding formations during tailings deposition. The second was the difference in post-closure magnesium (Mg) loading to surface water for two tailings deposition scenarios. INTERA developed a two-dimensional (2D) model that showed excess tailings pore pressures would not cause outflow and solute egress from the pit during deposition. INTERA’s three-dimensional (3D) models demonstrated that post-closure Mg loading to creeks for both tailings scenarios differed marginally and would be a small fraction of natural creek Mg loads. The modelling results helped avoid delays in completing tailings deposition driven by stakeholders’ environmental concerns. Case study #2 consisted of supporting ERA’s 2019 request for approval to change the tailings deposition method and final tailings level in Pit 3. INTERA’s model results for the permitted and proposed deposition methods showed minimal differences in post-closure Mg loading to creeks. The model results helped ERA obtain the needed approval for the tailings deposition method and water and tailings levels in Pit 3. For case study #3, INTERA modelled the comparative impacts from leaving the entire contaminant plume from the temporary tailings storage facility (TSF) in situ or excavating a portion of the contaminated material from beneath the TSF floor and placing it in Pit 3. The modelling results supported an approved TSF contaminated material application important for ERA to stay on schedule and minimise both closure costs and environmental impacts.
