The Meekatharra mining district lies in the northern pan of the Murchison Province of the Archaean Ynlgam block of Western Australia. Since dis- covery of the Paddy's Flat belt in the district in 1897 total gold production has been 67 tonnes and a further 33 tonnes in resources have been defined by drilling. The Paddy's Flat gold deposits occur within the Gabanintha Formation, a basal formation of the Murchison greenstone sequence containing komatiitic basalts, ultramafics and minor banded iron formations. The regional control on the distribution of deposits is an anastomosing shear belt which extends over 350 km and incorporates the Mt Magnet, Reedys and Meekatharra deposits. The following gold deposit styles may be recognized based on lithological association and alteration: Albite porphyry hosted, Carbonate-fuchsite- quartz alteration hosted deposits, Banded Iron Formation hosted sulphide replacement gold deposits and quartz vein deposits. With the exception of the banded iron formation hosted deposits, the Paddy's Flat alteration zone shows strong similarities to the alteration styles at Kerr-Addison (Ontario).

Today, it is accepted that rock fragmentation by blasting affects loading and hauling operations, and also directly influences on downstream processes such as crushing and grinding. In this research, the influence of rock fragmentation by blasting on the performance of three mills at Gol-e-Gohar iron ore mine No 1 was studied. Firstly, the fragmentation of conventional blast patterns in iron ore (5 × 6 m) was studied using image analysis and the performances of three mills were monitored. Then, a new blast pattern (4 × 5 m) was designed and nine blasts were carried out using this pattern. Increasing the powder factor form 1650 gr/m3 to 2480 gr/m3 by changing the blast pattern design showed that mill throughputs increase five per cent to 30 per cent for the new pattern.CITATION:Hakami, A, Mansouri, H, Ebrahimi Farsangi, M A, Dehghan, M R and Faramarzi, F, 2015. "Recognising that the mining industry is wedded to the break-even cut-off grade rather than a cut-off grade that optimises value, the author examines some perils and pitfalls in the use of break-even grades that lead to what the author calls ‘negatively geared ore reserves’.Negatively geared ore reserves occur when a portion of the ore reserves actually has a negative value and is effectively being subsidised by the more profitable portion of the ore reserves. This situation is generally difficult to detect with the level of information available to the public investor. The ore reserves can still be quite profitable in total, but now possess a level of risk that may not be appreciated.The risk profile (financial risk) of a negatively geared ore reserve is far greater than for a non-negatively geared ore reserve. Like a negatively geared investment property in a falling property market (for readers familiar with the Australian tax minimisation investment strategy), when the price of a commodity falls, a company that possesses a negatively geared ore reserve loses value at a magnified rate relative to a company that has a neutral or positively geared ore reserve. In the extreme case of a major commodity price reduction, as happened with the gold price in mid-2013, the negatively geared ore reserve can easily become negative value in total, not just in part.The negatively geared ore reserve is sometimes intentional – for instance in order to increase published ore reserve tonnages and meet the CEO’s key performance indicators – but is also often unintentional, resulting from various errors in the break-even calculation. Common errors in calculating a break-even grade include using fixed metallurgical recoveries, not including allowances for ideal laboratory versus real plant results, ignoring available operational data and using modal rather than mean parameter values in cost and performance calculations.This paper examines a common value distribution profile in many ore reserves and the effect of common break-even grade errors on this profile.CITATION:Poniewierski, J, 2016. This paper describes a new mine backfill method based on a newly invented binder with several years of test results from laboratory and on- site applications. The new binder has several advantages over traditional Portland and slag cement binders. One tonne of the new binder can replace two to three tonne of Portland cement when used to consolidate backfill and can result in the same compressive strength within seven days. When comparing backfill slurries of the same pulp density, the new binder attains more volume of in-place backfill mass than Portland cement because of the high crystallisation of water, resulting in tightly filled stopes. The crystallisation of the water provides for less or no de- watering in the backfill stope and easier transportation of the backfill slurry. Pastefill performance can be achieved by using pulp densities typical of a hydraulic backfill and the new binder, all the while transporting with the same ease of hydraulic fill.

In April 1994 the Victorian Premier announced new State initiatives, collectively termed the Victorian Initiative for Minerals and Petroleum (VIMP), for exploration totalling $16.5 m over three years. The program, initially centred on the northwest of Victoria, the Eastern Highlands and the Otway Basin, is due for completion in June 1997 and has been designed to attract explorers to highly prospective but currently under-explored parts of the State. Major components of the program include acquisition of geophysical data (including airborne magnetics and radiometrics, gravity and seismic data), stratigraphic drilling, geological mapping and mineral resource data compilation. At the completion of the current program, 70 per cent of the State will have been covered by airborne magnetic and radiometric coverage at 400 m line spacing or better (Figure I) while 20 per cent of the State will have been covered by new geological mapping. The completion of database compilations for geochemistry, mine data and exploration licence summaries during the VIMP program is shown in Figure 2. The new airborne geophysical surveys have been flown partly under the VIMP program and partly by AGSO under the National Geoscience Mapping Accord (NGMA). Data from these surveys have been interpreted and incorporated into the geological mapping in order to enhance the quality of map products, especially in areas of Cainozoic cover. The first series 1:250 000 scale geological map coverage of Victoria was completed by the Geological Survey of Victoria (GSV) in 1977, and was based on compilation of historical geological mapping with minor field checking in most cases. The first metric 1:50 000 scale geology maps were also commenced in the 1970s, but were discontinued in the 1980s in favour of 1:100 000 scale map production. Driven by customer survey findings and with the benefit of detailed airborne geophysical data in the 1990s, the GSV reverted to 1:50 000 scale map production in 1995, with 1:10 000 scale maps made in areas of significant gold production. Geological reports still cover standard 1:100 000 scale map areas, but are now accompanied by four 1:50 000 scale maps. These new series 1:50 000 scale geological maps have been supported by comprehensive mine data and exploration licence summary databases in addition to the new geophysics, and benefit from the advances made in structural geological interpretation over the last decade. The new phase of geological mapping in Victoria, commenced under the NGMA in 1990 and accelerated under VIMP in 1994, has been focused in the central Victorian goldfields and eastern Highlands areas of the State (Figure 1). Results to-date have led to a number of major advances in the understanding of the eeoloeical evolution of Victoria.

It is well known that most roof falls in coal mines typically occur at and around intersections. Room-and-pillar and longwall coal mining systems typically develop 3-way and 4-way intersections. This research develops an improved scientific understanding of stress distribution and associated instability behaviour around 3-way and 4-way coal mine intersections through 3-D numerical modelling and limited field observations. Numerical analyses were performed for an Illinois longwall coal mine to identify factors that influence intersection stability. The stability of immediate roof, floor strata, and coal ribs at and around intersections are considered with pre-mining regional horizontal stress. Non-linear failure analyses used the Hoek-Brown failure criterion for rock mass. Progressive failure zones in and around intersections were developed. For a typical 4-way intersection, pillar corners across the intersection fail first and lead to progressive failure of the immediate roof and floor layers. The mechanism of failure is similar for a 3-way intersection but the shape and extension of failed zones differ. For the 3-way intersection, the effect of off-set distance was analysed. It was found that minimum off-set distance of about 10 m (centre to centre distance between two 3-way intersections) was required to minimize interaction between two intersections. A simple instrumentation program monitor ground movements around intersections. These data were used to design the intersection geometry that is now being practiced by the mine. Over a century ago the first ship designed solely for carrying a bulk cargo was launched. This vessel, the "John Bowes", with a deadweight of 660 tonnes was a single decked ship with machinery and accommodation aft. As such she was undoubtedly the fore- runner of the bulk carrier of today only some two hundred and fifty times smaller. Whilst the "John Bowes" pioneered the present accepted mode of transporting the bulk com- modities of the world, it is unlikely that her cargo was either loaded or discharged as quickly as that of a 150, 000 tonner of today. Two decades ago the bulk carrier was beginning to feature in the bulk handling ports of the world. Cargoes of iron ore previously carried in the 'tween deck vessels of the Empire type and Second World War Liberty ships began to be poured into the unrestricted open holds of bulk or ore carriers. The size of vessels catering for this relatively new innovation has rapidly grown to pass the 150, 000 deadweight tonne mark, but only in the last few years. The growth from now into the future is not simply one of ship size evolution. Neither is it a function of the depth of water available at ports. It is in fact a function of a number of features such as ports, loading and unloading facilities, ship trading characteristics, length of voyage and total economies of the transport task from supplier to destination.

This paper presents the research achievements from these studies, including a rock mass quality evaluation method, cavability prediction, fragmentation evaluation, caving mechanisms, a computerised production scheduling model and the optimised draw control system. The main features of the block caving system in the Tongkuangyu Copper Mine are also discussed.

The coal seam gas (CSG) industry is expanding rapidly in the Surat and Bowen basins. CSG production involves pumping water from the coal seams to release the gas adsorbed to coal particles. The reduction in water pressure in the coal seams will cause some reductions in water pressure in overlying and underlying aquifers because there will always be some interconnectivity between the formations. The Surat Basin is a sub-basin of the Great Artesian Basin, which contains aquifers of high economic, environmental and cultural value. The Condamine Alluvium is also an important water resource, which overlies parts of the eastern margin of the Surat Basin.Under the Queensland (Qld) regulatory framework, an area of intensive CSG development involving multiple CSG operators can be declared to be a cumulative management area. For such areas the Office of Groundwater Impact Assessment develops assessments of future impacts on aquifer water pressures and develops and manages arrangements. The results are published in underground water impact reports.The Surat underground water impact report (QWC, 2012) was approved in December 2012. In considering the organization of research, it is necessary to know just what research is, what objects are in mind when setting out to conduct research, and what are the functional units which are required to enable a coordinated effort in research to proceed.The dictionary defines research in the following terms: Laborious and patient search, as for truth, diligent inquiry or examination in seeking facts or principles; inquiry, scrutiny; to search or examine with continued care; to seek diligently; to search again; to examine anew.This is, of course, simply a formal definition, but the reference to "labour", "patience" and "diligence" should be noted.The following quotation from an answer to the question "What is Research?", published recently in a technical journal, puts some life into the formal definition:- Essentially, it (Research) is nothing but a state of mind a friendly, welcoming attitude toward change. Going out to look for a change instead of waiting for it to come. Research, for practical men, is an effort to do things better... The research state of mind can apply to anything: personal affairs or any kind of business, big or little. It is the problem-solving mind as contrasted with the let-well-enough-alone mind . . . It is the "to-morrow" mind instead of the "yesterday" mind. Note the statements that: Essentially, it (Research) is nothing but a state of mind, and the research state of mind can apply to anything.

Gold deposits in Eastern China have characteristic of belted distribution. The concentrating belts of gold mineralization are about parallel to the island are belt in Western Pacific Ocean. Gold deposits are mainly concentrated in the aged metamorphic rock series on the upwarping zones and upwarping fault zones, and obviously controlled by the deep fractures and their deriva-tive secondary faults. Gold mineralization had genetic relation to the Mesozoic (especially Yanshan period) magmatic activity. The distribution and genesis of gold deposits can be explained by the assumption of wavy structure. The formation of wavy structure is related to the process of Pacific plate and India plate.

High temperature roasting studies on chrome-spinel contaminated ilmenite concentrates showed that sulfur, introduced through a sulfidising roast treatment, selectively reacted with the chromium in the spinels. The roast treatments were carried out in a laboratory scale rotating drum kiln using a standard Becher-style heating profile (10 h, 1075ºC), char as the reductant, and variable amounts of added elemental sulfur (0 - 3 wt per cent).After roasting, bronze-coloured grains were visible representing chrome-spinels that had undergone selective sulfidisation. SEM imaging of the products showed that sulfur was preferentially concentrated in ~5 - 15 µm thick rims fully enclosing the chrome-spinel grains. The sulfur-rich rims became a sink for manganese (Mn) from the ilmenite resulting in the rims being rich in Cr-Mn-Fe-sulfides. Quantitative electron probe microanalysis of phases present within the rims identified two sulfide phases. The first sulfur-phase (S-phase) was low in Mn (1 - 3 wt per cent) and high in Fe, Cr and S, while the second S-phase was considerably higher in Mn (30 - 35 wt per cent Mn) and lower in Fe and Cr. The dramatic change in the composition of the chrome spinels after sulfidisation is likely to significantly alter their physical properties (eg hydrophobicity, conductivity, etc). This should make their physical separation from the ilmenite potentially easier than roasting/magnetic separation methods.

An inrush of water or mud into an underground mine, or sudden subsidence above mining voids represent low probability but high impact risks in underground mining. About two such incidents involving multiple fatalities or loss of production are reported each year worldwide. On average, Australia experiences one such incident every three to four years. This paper reports the development of a Standard that is intended to eliminate fatalities due to inrushes and subsidence.

Inclined troughed belt conveyors are more frequently being selected from a range of alternatives, which include shafts and trucks for ore haulage in underground mass mining projects. Belt conveyor haulage systems are being operated with lifts exceeding those normally associated with truck haulage systems and approaching the limits of shaft haulage systems. A belt conveyor haulage system, in this context, incorporates subsystems for: crushing,tramp detection and removal, andhaulage. This paper presents details of recent inclined troughed belt conveyor systems for underground mining operations, and explores the application of inclined troughed belt conveyors for the increasing demands of future underground mass mining projects.

"Column leach tests are used frequently to predict recoveries and reagent consumption for nickel laterite heap leaches. These column leaches often run for more than 100 days and therefore require long-term monitoring and data analysis to achieve the desired information. To minimise the cost and time required to obtain relevant information for nickel laterite heap leaching, we have developed a small-scale hydrogeometallurgical laboratory test to serve as a proxy to column, and by inference, heap leaching. In excess of 50 leach tests were conducted using four different small-scale proxy and column leach tests to compare predicted nickel recoveries, acid consumption and leach kinetics and to determine whether insight into potential scale-up effects can be obtained. The most promising proxy test was identified and we achieved a statistically significant recovery and acid consumption correlations between this test and the column leach tests. The accuracy of the small-scale tests was confirmed by column tests run on new laterite ores. Active geothermal systems occur widely in Sumatra and in the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ) of New Zealand. There are also many occurrences of epithermal gold mineralisation in Sumatra, some of which are economic. Minor sub-economic occurrences of gold have been reported in the TVZ but none have yet been mined. There are both similarities and differences in the nature of the active geothermal systems and mineral deposits in Sumatra and New Zealand, which can be systematically related to the tectonic setting. The thicker crust and consequent predominance of silicic volcanism in New Zealand leads to hydrothermal. systems which are little eroded and with limited lateral outflows. The systems in Sumatra are of mixed character, with some of the characteristics of those in andesitic island arcs such as Java or the Philippines, eg a higher proportion of systems with identifiable acid magmatic volatiles, a greater potential for deep erosion and lateral outflows than in New Zealand; but modified by the more oblique component of subduction and thickened crust so that some are localised in volcano-tectonic depressions and consequently have high piezometric levels of primary hydrothermal fluid. The unusual occurrence of calcic zeolites in veins associated with gold mineralisation in Sumatra is thought to be indicative of "satellite" boiling zones along de-gassed hydrothermal outflows.

Blast fragmentation size distribution and thus blast design have been found to have a direct impact on the load and haul cycle through excavator dig time and bucket payload. Previous studies have demonstrated that by reducing the excavator dig time and increasing bucket payload, significant improvements can be made in both productivity and unit cost. Simulation work reported in the literature indicates that a 20 per cent improvement in dig time may result in only a three per cent improvement in load and haul productivity and unit cost. At the same time, a ten per cent improvement in bucket payload will directly translate to a ten per cent improvement in load and haul productivity and unit cost. Based upon these findings, extensive laboratory and field work have been undertaken in the past to correlate blast fragmentation distribution to bucket payload. In contrast, the literature reports limited studies quantifying the impact of blast fragmentation on excavator dig time. Field work was conducted at Placer Dome Asia PacificÆs Granny Smith Mine (Wallaby Pit) in Western Australia, concentrating on quantifying the impact of blast fragmentation on the dig time of a Liebherr 994 hydraulic excavator (shovel attachment with 14 m3 bucket). Fragmentation was assessed for each truck load of material using the Split Desktop system, while the excavator cycle analysis was conducted manually. Measured fragmentation P80 (fragment size at which 80 per cent of material passes) values ranged from 200 mm to 1200 mm. The field study investigated the impact of various fragmentation parameters (P20, P50, P80, cumulative per cent passing 250 mm size fraction, and uniformity index) on the average and total dig times. The results indicate that the fragmentation P80 provides the best correlation to average dig time (total dig time divided by the number of bucket passes to load a truck). The total dig time was found to be dependant upon the fragmentation P80 and the number of bucket passes to fill a truck. Monte Carlo simulation results, based upon these relationships, indicate a 26 per cent improvement in average dig time and a 12 per cent to 46 per cent improvement in total dig time (bucket passes ranging from 4 to 8), with a change in fragmentation P80 from 600 mm to 200 mm.

Mineral processing is characterised by a constant adaptation to changing raw materials and market conditions. It is the link between the mined raw material and a marketable product. As a lot of high-grade reserves are exploited, a steady deterioration of raw material quality can be observed. At the same time, the customer’s requirement for product purity and consistent quality increases.Over recent years beneficiation techniques for iron ore fines have become more important in order to achieve a maximised utilisation of ore resources and to produce competitive products according to international standards.Many high capacity iron ore beneficiation plants that target the production of fines focus on gravity separation processes using fluidised bed classifiers and spirals or wet high intensity magnetic separators as an alternative. This paper demonstrates the suitability of utilising the allflux® two-stage fluidised bed classifiers to treat iron ore particles up to 2 mm in size as well as showing how the high capacity gaustec® wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) technology offers several advantages compared to other WHIMS technology.The combination of the allflux® and gaustec® technologies offer the following benefits:The two-stage fluidised bed classification extracts a significant amount of concentrate from the feed. This in turn reduces the feed capacity required for the gaustec® WHIMS located downstream.The second classification stage produces a -0.5 + 0.1 mm product and a -0.1 mm product. The efficiency of the magnetic separation on these classifi ed products is high due to optimised settings for each size fraction.

Area selection criteria for gold exploration have historically highlighted the low prospectivity of high-metamorphic grade terranes relative to regions with lower metamorphic grades. The Tropicana gold project, Western Australia, is a rare example of a major greenfields gold discovery in Archean mid-amphibolite to granulite-facies gneissic rocks that have experienced widespread recrystallisation and partial melting.The project, located on the tectonically reworked eastern margin of the Yilgarn Craton, is part of the Tropicana Joint Venture, which is 70 per cent owned by AngloGold Ashanti Australia (manager) and 30 per cent by Independence Group NL. Construction of the mine commenced in the June quarter of 2011 and first gold pour from open pit mining is anticipated in the December quarter of 2013. The approved project will have a ten-year mine life and in the first three years of operation, gold production will be between 470 000 - 490 000 oz/a at a cash cost of A$590 - A$630/oz.Reserves as at 31 December 2011 total 56.4 Mt grading 2.16 g/t for 3.91 Moz of gold. The mineral resource, as of 30 December 2012, has grown to 7.89 Moz of contained gold, including Inferred Resources of 11.9 Mt at 2.83 g/t for 1.08 Moz.Economic gold mineralisation post-dates peak metamorphism and is interpreted as younger in age (ca. 2500 Ma) than other gold deposits in the Yilgarn Craton on the basis of structural and geochronological constraints. Mineralisation is genetically related to an imbricate thrust stack that records a prolonged history of reactivation during the Proterozoic era. Gold mineralisation formed from higher temperature (>350¦C) silica-undersaturated fluids that preferentially migrated though a favourable intensely potassium metasomatised zone. Permeability created during brittle fragmentation was accompanied by replacement of mafic metamorphic minerals, and synchronous partitioning of strain into pervasively biotite-sericite-pyrite-altered stylolites and shear planes that bound more competent lithons.CITATION:Doyle, M, Savage, J, Blenkinsop, T G, Crawford, A and McNaughton, N, 2013.
