Taquari Vasouras potash mine (Vale Fertilizantes) has many interesting features including virgin rock temperatures of 50¦C at depths of 700 m. The mine has a relatively small shaft system with limited ventilation carrying capacity, which was not adequate to exploit the full extent of the deposit. This limitation was overcome by installing two large-scale recirculation systems with underground reconditioning centres. This paper describes this unique mine ventilation and cooling system and some of its history over the past two decades. The two controlled recirculation systems have been operating safely for some ten years and the use of large-scale recirculation has been a fundamental component in the increase of production and extending the mining further-and-further from the shaft centre. The recirculation systems have played a huge role in the mine profitability and comprehensively extending the mine life. The paper also discusses a number of novel design and operating features such as reverse running pumps for energy recovery. The underground chilled water system design required a number of special safety features in order to minimise the risk of water leakage since this could be catastrophic in a potash mine. This paper describes a good example of a mine in which the final ventilation and cooling system design ends up very different to what was envisaged at the greenfields stage.CITATION:Bluhm, S, Funnell, R and de Oliveira, L, 2013. A new test coke oven of seven cubic foot capacity is described. The oven was designed to simulate conditions in a central section of a battery oven and a special feature is the achievement of unidirectional heating from the flues on either side of the charge. The method of charging permits close control of charge conditions'such as bulk density and moisture content. These conditions, as well as coking conditions (e.g. flue temper- atures., coking time) must be varied to simulate conditions in different batteries, The effects of several variables on coke quality are discussed. Using test oven conditions corresponding to those of Newcastle steelworks batteries, good agreement was obtained between strength indices of test oven and battery cokes; for 17 tests, the average A.S.T.M. stability and hardness indices for the test oven coke were 38,5% and 69.7%, while those for the battery coke were 37.1.% and 67.6%.

Through Compliance Planning, operations can not only measure their performance on intervals as short as intra-shift, but they can then apply corrective measures to ensure they remain as close as possible to the plans. Compliance Planning targets short-term and execution level teams, as these are the shortest duration planning divisions commonly found in mining operations. Compliance Planning combines live information with intelligent planning capabilities to provide a framework that enables mining operations to realise a significant improvement in reconciliation of plan to actual movements.

Tunnels are being built around the world using TBMs and prefabricated segments or in situ concrete as linings. Clients demand high quality of these linings to guarantee a long-term stability and density of the tunnels. This paper describes the development and the use of segmental lining systems, including joints, important design criteria, installation procedures, possible mistakes and consequences, repair works and final results for different sites in Europe and around the world. The experience on these sites shows that damages may occur, if some essential aspects are not considered. These aspects include:parameters of the TBMs and back-up equipment such as fixation of jacking rams, movement of the back-up on the lining or ring reformer;parameters of the segments such as quality of moulds, quantity of reinforcement or structure of the joints; andparameters of the tunnel drive such as advance rate, ring-gap grouting or experience of the tunnel crew.All these aspects have to be considered very carefully in detail to get a good lining accepted in total.

To finalise the arrangement and details of the headframe to be erected over the new No. 3 Shaft, the haulage and winding equipment requirements were first determined, then tentative designs were prepared to cover the needs of general shaft servicing work for men and materials, mullock and ore handling, and the probable requirements of a breaker station to be built adjacent to the headframe, which would provide for the crushing of the run-of-mine ore down to a size which would be suitable for feeding on to the concentrating mill.

A major Ventilation Upgrade Project commenced at the Fosterville Gold Mine (FGM) in 2017 to service the ongoing ventilation requirements of the underground mining operation. The project consists of three large diameter ventilation raises totalling 1100 metres, and new axial primary ventilation fans to upgrade the mine ventilation system. With a mining depth of 1200 metres and a thermal gradient of approximately 2.7 °C per 100 metres of depth, the completion of the Ventilation Upgrade Project is key to the ongoing success at FGM. The Ventilation Upgrade Project will allow continued mining, including high-grade gold deposits, lower in the mine where heat is increasing. Figure 1 below illustrates the underground workings at FGM, and provides a general view of the ventilation upgrade works to establish the new exhaust system from the lower workings to surface. Whilst raisebore pilot drilling the H4760 Return Air Rise (RAR) from surface to 395 metres, the raisebore drill string became stuck in the raisebore pilot hole at approximately 300 metres down hole, presenting a significant technical problem and delays to the project. This Case Study provides an overview of the recovery process undertaken at FGM including the recovery of the stuck drill string. The value of the stuck in-hole equipment, the investment in the shaft site preparation, the collar stabilisation, the underground development to the base of the ventilation raise, the surface footprint prepared for the Primary Fans construction and the limited available space on the site were all motivations to recover the raisebore drill sting and ultimately recover the ventilation raise location. More importantly, the long lead-time required should a new shaft location be the final solution, and the delay this would incur to the ventilation upgrade was unacceptable. Recovery of the drill string was not possible using the capability of the Contractor’s Raise Drill. An alternative method for freeing the drill string was required. A significant amount of engagement with industry was undertaken to seek out potential solutions and draw from the experience of others. All methodologies available were considered and assessed. Ultimately, after several attempts at freeing the raisebore drill string using various methodologies, Adams Drillers and Clear Cut Interventions were engaged to provide a turnkey recovery solution.

Ingress of air into the longwall goaf environment needs to be managed appropriately to reduce the risk of creating a spontaneous combustion event. The maingate goaf edge is an area of particular concern in this respect, as air often penetrates for some distance into the goaf along this region inbye of the longwall face. Since the flow rate in this part of the goaf is also quite low, an opportunity exists to disrupt the air pathway by implementing a barrier to the airflow. Previous attempts using plugs made from an assortment of materials have resulted in varying degrees of success. More recently, Narrabri Coal Operations (NCO) has introduced the use of a chemical foam that is mixed with nitrogen to produce a standing barrier with the consistency of shaving cream. The implementation of this practice has consistently proven to be very effective for reducing the oxygen concentration along the maingate goaf edge by systematically retreating the foaming unit with the longwall. This paper presents how the foam is applied in the underground goaf environment to prevent oxygen ingress and uses results from gas monitoring to confirm the foam effectiveness.

Sungun Copper Mine, which is the second largest copper mining operation in Iran has a large tailings storage facility with a seepage control dam located downstream of the main dam. Surface and groundwater in surrounding area of the tailings storage facility has been monitored for ten years. This paper will discuss the results of the surface and groundwater monitoring and seepage control at the Sungun Copper Mine. The results of the study show that if the tailings storage facility influence the water quality of the rivers, this effect is not significant, so that the prevailing parameters of the measured parameters were within the permissible standard of drinking water in Iran.CITATION:Rashidi Nejad, F, Naraghi, S and Pirouznia, N, 2018. The Wonawinta silver project near Cobar in NSW is under development by Cobar Consolidated Resources Limited (CCR). RMDSTEM Limited is part of the owner’s team for feasibility, design, engineering, construction and commissioning.With a 51Moz resource CCR is one of the largest pure silver players in Australia. A probable reserve of 14.3Moz has been defined for a mine life of approximately five years. The silver mineralization is contained in host rock composed of clays and oxidized limestone. The ore also contains on average 1.3% lead as cerussite, and other minerals. A simple circuit consisting of slurrying of the ore, gravity treatment of the coarse fraction to recover lead, silver extraction using CIL, elution and the Merrill Crowe silver recovery process, has been developed.The “value engineering” approach to this development pioneered over the past decade by RMDSTEM has meant that RMDSTEM has delivered the bankable feasibility study at a cost of $0.07 per resource ounce. It is highly cost effective making efficient use of shareholders funds as well as being very time efficient. This paper describes the application of the value engineering approach to the development of the Wonawinta project.

During the later part of 2007 I was lucky enough to visit the Atlas Copco facilities in Sweden, and to see first hand what a large and diverse company Atlas Copco is. The reason this paper calls the Atlas Copco experience a bonanza is that it means a source of great and sudden wealth or luck; a spectacular windfall or a rich mass of ore, as found in mining. I think this aptly describes the scholarship as it has greatly increased my wealth of knowledge of the mining industry. This paper intends to encourage all those eligible to apply for this fantastic scholarship opportunity, and seeks to thank all those involved who made this scholarship the amazing experience that it was. Atlas Copco produces most of its Swedish products in the town of +rebro, and it was here that I spent most of my time, visiting the Underground Rock Excavation group, the Surface Mining Equipment group and Rocktec. I also travelled around Sweden and was able to visit one of OricaÆs manufacturing plants, the Secoroc groupÆs manufacturing plant, the Geotechnical Drilling and Exploration group as well as being fortunate enough to visit the LKAB mine in the Arctic Circle in Sweden. The trip was not all information on Atlas Copco products and services however; I was able to go to the Ice Hotel in JukkasjSrvi and drink Absolut Vodka out of ice glasses, go on a reindeer safari (as well as eat them!), sample the fine meat from a moose, drink local schnapps, attend the Atlas Copco Christmas party, wander around the wonderful city of Stockholm and generally immerse myself in the great Swedish culture.

Block caving is an important mining method for the future economic exploitation of large, low-grade, steeply dipping orebodies. While block caving is not a new method, there are still many unknowns surrounding the mechanics driving the process, particularly as we are forced into deeper, higher-stressed and stronger ore deposits. The caving industry is desperate to provide some explanation behind the myths of caving geomechanics to better predict and manage current caves and caves of the future. Large amounts of data are collected to help understand caving, but it is not fully utilised and current approaches for analysing the data are capacity limited. The application of virtual reality and scientific visualisation (VRSV) technology to visualise and analyse block caving is a critical future component in the assessment toolbox. VRSV enables large, complex, multidimensional data sets to be analysed and the power of human visual problem solving processes to be utilised. Block caving is a complex system and needs to be analysed as a system, rather than looking at individual factors one at a time. A software module has been developed at UNSW Australia for use in the advanced visualisation interactive environment for analysis of the block cave mining system (BCMS). This fully immersive, 3D virtual assessment tool shows exciting potential and is used to analyse the BCMS with a close linkage to time (ie the chronological occurrence of data). This tool will enable a true investigation into the cause and effect relations within the BCMS. Current research is investigating Newcrest Mining Limited’s Ridgeway Deeps operation and is aiming to turn some of the cause/effect relationships into increased geomechanics understanding to provide improvements to ground control management. Ore textures in Australian BIF-derived ores are quite complex and have formed the basis for ore genesis models, which includes hypogene upgrading or supergene upgrading then regional metamorphism for the microplaty hematite ores and supergene upgrading for the martite-goethite ores. Despite a high level of ore texture knowledge, little is known about the spatial distribution of ore textures within deposits or their relationship to downstream processing. This paper describes a new iron ore texture classification system to better understand the vertical textural zonation characteristics of Australian BIF-derived deposits, the interpreted role of recent supergene upgrading processes on modifying primary ore textures and their implications for downstream mineral processing. The iron ore textural classification scheme presented uses textural groupings defined on the basis of similarities in mineralogy, ore texture, porosity, mineral associations and hardness. The scheme is non-genetic and has been successfully applied to deposits in the Pilbara, Yilgarn and Gawler cratons. The main ore texture groups include dense martite/hematite, microplaty hematite, microplaty hematite-goethite, martite-goethite, goethite-martite and goethite-rich. Each group can be further subdivided into physically hard to softer subcategories. The ore textural groups can be divided into those interpreted to be associated with primary replacement of BIF and secondary textures resulting from more recent modification by near-surface hydration or dehydration processes. A schematic vertical section through BIF-derived deposits consists (from surface) of detritals underlain by a carapace, both of which may have been eroded, followed by a hydrated zone with replacement of primary ore martite and microplaty hematite by vitreous goethite. The hydrated zone is underlain by 0.2 - 6 m thick zones of intense dehydration and textural infilling of porosity with hematite and hydrohematite. Immediately below the dehydration zone is a strong zone of leaching, where more porous and friable ore textures occur, followed underneath by a gradational contact with primary ore. Secondary supergene processes can impact on beneficiation with hydration and leaching resulting in more difficult density separations at the concentrator stage due to reductions in density differences between ore and gangue and loss of heavy media into pores. Supergene modification of primary BIF-derived ore textures can substantially change lump metallurgical properties, with hydration and dehydration favourably increasing lump yield but reducing resistance to thermal shock whilst leaching will give the opposing outcome. The lump properties of ore textural groups appear to be relatively consistent within and between the iron ore deposits examined.

PT. Indo Muro Kencana (PT.IMK) is gold and silver mine located in Central Kalimantan province, Indonesia. Mining activities in PT.IMK is conducted in Bantian pit area by applying surface mining method and using combination of excavator and hauler (articulated dump truck and rigid haul truck) as the transportation for ore to the crushing plant and waste material to the waste dump. Current blasting practice is ore-waste blasting. Ore-waste blasting is the term where the ore and waste rock are blasted in the same blasting process. Blasting is conducted by using nonel initiation system. By multiple pits operation, monthly powder factor is varied from 0.23 kg/t to 0.27 kg/t. Emulsion blend with density 1.15 g/cc is used as bulk explosive. At this stage, the concept of geoblast is proposed as an engineering tool for Drill and Blast engineering practice in PT.IMK. In addition, there is a need to maintain rock fragmentation by blasting, to maintain monthly powder factor, and to maintain excavator’s productivity. Next, the concept of scaled depth of burial (Chiappetta and Treleven, 1997) and the concept of blastability index (Lilly, 1986) are proposed as geoblast’s tools to improve blasting practice in PT.IMK. It is expected that rock fragmentation by blasting, explosive consumption and excavator’s productivity will be maintained by integration of geoblast and drill and blast engineering. Furthermore, the objective of this paper is to integrate geoblast and drill and blast engineering in order to create an engineering guideline in PT.IMK. Additionally, blasting trials with air decking application is proposed in order to support the geoblast’s improvement. It is planned that these blasting trials will be conducted in 2022. In conclusion, it can be seen that integration of geoblast and D&B engineering in PT.IMK is relevant to improve current drill and blast current practice and applicable to maintain rock fragmentation by blasting.

Reliable prediction of longwall gas emission sources and rate plays a critical role in mine ventilation and methane drainage capacity planning. Over the years, Australian longwall mines have been using the historic Winter method and the Flugge method in modelling specific gas emissions (SGE). The predicted results often experience high discrepancies from the operational reality. To improve gas emission prediction, post-mining gas contents were measured in several mines in Qld and NSW by safely drilling core holes into the longwall goaf. The results revealed many new insights into gas emission characteristics from different coal seams and the drawbacks of the European methods in their use in high-production gassy Australian longwall mines. Based on measurement data, a new, time-dependent gas emission prediction model has been developed. Considering several factors such as caving, desorption and production rate, the new model can predict more accurate and meaningful gas emissions to meet today’s needs in mine gas emission management. A case study is provided to demonstrate the application of the new SGE model.

Safety and stability of underground mine openings, coal pillars and water dams in the near vicinity of operating surface mines are endangered from excessive blast induced vibrations. This paper deals with the investigations carried out in four coal mines. Simultaneous measurements at equal distances from the source indicated higher level of vibration on the surface than those produced in the underground workings. The values of peak particle velocity (PPV) measured on coal pillars, body of water dam were lower than those measured on roof and junctions of the roadways. The parting of coal (3-4.5 m) between two sections vibrated with higher PPV compared to the roof of top section and floor of bottom section. In one case the influence of total charge fired in a round was significant in generation of vibration compared to the maximum charge/delay where monitoring was done vertically below the source.

U-Th isotope studies of recent volcanic rocks may be used to evaluate the depths and rates of melt generation beneath mid- ocean ridges and ocean islands. Island arc rocks exhibit a similar range in Th isotopes to that seen in both MORB and OIB, but while those with high (230Th/232Th) tend to have excess 238U, many of those with low (230Th/232Th) are in isotope equilibrium. The excess 238U is attributed to the preferential mobilisation of U in hydrous fluids from the subducted slab within the last 100,000 years, whereas the low Th isotope ratios in the higher-K arcs are primarily due to the introduction of subducted sediment. Preliminary results from mineral separates from lavas on Soufriere on the island of St. Vincent indicate that some of the minerals crystallised up to 50,000 years prior to eruption.

The legacy of underground coal mining may be a land surface which, in parts, may be unstable in the long term. A case study analysis has been undertaken to explain some of the hazards and how the risk may be assessed and managed.The Ipswich Coal Measures were extensively mined with shallow underground workings, which now underlie a number of suburbs in the eastern side of the city of Ipswich in south eastern Queensland. The area was subject to underground mining from the 1840s to 1997. In general, the mines were small, family-owned operations that were restricted by complex geology, interactions with neighbouring operations and ownership of surface facilities. The oldest available mine plans date back to the late 1890s.The residents in these mining areas have a long history of unexpected mining subsidence events. A level of risk management for property owners has been implemented by the Ipswich City Council, which requires a mining subsidence risk assessment to be submitted as part of building applications for property development in the areas suspected of having mining subsidence risk. This discussion examines a series of generic subsidence events and how the risk may be assessed and managed and the hazard controlled.CITATION:Ham, B?W, 2014. British Coal's Selby Complex is the newest producing mine in the United Kingdom. The reasons behind its origins, planning and design are explained. Some detail is given of equipment used, with the emphasis being placed on the unique features of its layout. The entire project has been planned and constructed over many years and the design has consequently changed, principally in response to the geology of the coalfield and improving technology. In spite of many totally unexpected difficulties, the mine, which is not yet in full production, has the highest productivity in the United Kingdom.

Chemical and isotopic analyses of fumarole gases from Galeras Volcano, Colombia provide significant insights into the origin of volatile components in the magma.. Water comprises a mixture of magmatic (rock-equilibrated at high temperature) and meteoric, with the relative proportions varying through time. Carbon isotopes are most consistent with a mantle source, although other contributions to the system cannot be ruled out. Nitrogen most likely originated from organic matter in subducted oceanic sediments. All of these "primary" components have been modified somewhat by interaction or exchange with other reservoirs during ascent to the surface. In addition to information on the origin of the gases, these data show significant temporal variations precursory to eruptive events. Chemical ratios change and water becomes more meteoric in character prior to eruptions.

The reverse flotation of Itabirite iron ore is typically performed after a desliming step in which most of the sub-10 µm particles are removed. This is done to limit processing problems such as poor flotation recovery of SiO2 due to slime coatings and increased slurry viscosities, unmanageable froths and increased losses of hematite particles due to entrainment. However, the rejection of ultrafine particles contributes to large losses in iron recovery and may contribute to the instability of tailings dams. The aim of this study is to decouple the effects of ultrafine particles in the pulp and froth phases to better understand the processing capabilities of the fines fraction. The flotation test work was performed in a special-purpose continuously operated laboratory flotation cell that has a deep froth section to simulate plant-scale froth conditions. Five conditions of fines addition were investigated at three different froth heights and a solids concentration of 50 per cent. The behaviour of the pulp and the froth were decoupled using froth stability and froth recovery tests. This showed that, even though there is an exponential increase in froth stability at increasing fines quantities, the performance of the pulp has the overriding effect on the overall SiO2 recovery. Pulp zone, froth zone and overall SiO2 recoveries showed that overall recoveries increased by about 3.6 per cent for every 1 per cent decrease in fines content. This meant a large increase of 20 per cent in SiO2 recovery when going from undeslimed to deslimed feed. This was driven largely by increases in the pulp zone recoveries, which were about 4 per cent for every 1 per cent decrease in fines content. The froth recoveries, on the other hand, decreased by between 0.75 per cent and 2.5 per cent for every 1 per cent decrease in fines content, depending on froth height. This paper explores further insights into iron ore flotation processing at different slimes concentrations.
