Spiral concentrators are one of the flowing film gravity concentration devices used to beneficiate coal and mineral ores. The aim of the current study is to understand the particulate flow and separation performance of an LD9 spiral concentrator using a multi-phase Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model. The CFD model utilises the Algebraic slip mixture model to simulate particulate flows. The model employs the Renormalisation group (RNG) k-ɛ turbulence models to resolve the fluid turbulence. Initially, the volume of fluid method was adopted to track the water-air interface. Simulations were then carried out at low (0.3 and 3 wt.%) and moderate (15 wt.%) solids concentrations. Multiple particle-phase representing particles of poly sizes (75–1400 µm) and multi-densities (1450–2650 kg/m3 ) were simulated to study the particle segregation on the spiral trough surface. The numerical predictions are compared with the literature performance data at a diluted pulp flow rate of 6 m3 /hr. The results were found in close agreement. Further, the same CFD model is used to study the change in pulp velocity, streamflow rates, and separation performance at increasing solids concentration. For the same density particles, Fine particles mostly show higher volume concentration in the middle and outer trough regions, whereas coarse particles show higher volume concentration in the interior and central trough regions. It implies that the fine particles mostly segregate towards the outer region, and dense particles segregate towards the axial column.

In 2010, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) was Australia’s largest gold producer, with total annual production of 788 000 ounces. Of the gold produced by KCGM in 2010, 95 per cent was extracted from the Fimiston open pit, also known as the Superpit. The Fimiston operation encompasses the historic Golden Mile, from which more than 55 million ounces of gold have been extracted from the world-class Fimiston lode style mineralisation.The operational performance of the KCGM Fimiston open pit was reviewed for the period between 2005 and 2010. Key performance metrics reviewed included mined tonnes and grade, cost per ounce of gold produced and the mine to mill reconciliation trends. The years 2007 and 2008 were characterised by a decline in performance against key performance metrics. The ore zones were diluted, with the excess tonnes mined resulting in lower grade and an increase in the cost per ounce. Poor reconciliation between ore mined, the ore reserve model and the grade control polygons was also observed.A series of improvement initiatives were implemented in late 2008. As a result of changes made to the grade control and mining practices, the site performance recovered. Unplanned dilution was reduced, which had a positive impact on mined grade. The lower tonnes combined with higher grade reduced the cost per ounce to below budgeted levels in 2009 and 2010, enhancing the profitability of the operation. The operational performance between 2005 and 2010 was compared to the turnover statistics for the KCGM geology department over the same period. Turnover accelerated between 2005 and 2007, peaking at an annualised rate of 43 per cent. With the onset of the Global Financial Crisis and the implementation of retention initiatives, turnover reduced significantly between 2008 and 2010. A strong consistent correlation was observed between the turnover trends in geology and the performance of the grade control function and resultant site metrics.The cost of turnover is known intuitively, however, rarely quantified. To evaluate the benefit of the improved performance, a detailed financial model was used to quantify the impact of the grade control function. In 2010, the headgrade exceeding budget by just four per cent contributed an additional A$24 M of value to KCGM. In contrast, if the 2008 performance had been replicated in 2010 (-9 per cent on headgrade), the result would have removed A$61 M in value from the business. The KCGM experience between 2005 and 2010 demonstrates the value of human capital in a mining operation and the importance of a high performing geology grade control team to the profitability of a mining operation.

Since iron oxide and silicon oxide are major gangue components in various types of ore, FeO-SiO2 base slag, ie fayalite slag, has been often encountered in pyrometallurgical processes of non-ferrous metals. During most matte production processes such as the smelting of Cu, Pb, and Ni, the FeOSiO2 based slag is inevitably formed and plays an important role in refining crude metal as well as engineering aspects. Recently, similar pyrometallurgical approaches have been attempted in the recovery of valuable metals (Ni, Co, Cr) from wasted secondary batteries. Thus, the viscosity of the FeO-SiO2 based slag has great significance in properly controlling smelting processes. However, when molten metal or matte does not coexist with the slag during the measurement, there has been a serious difficulty in maintaining Fe valance and consequently, the slag composition. In the present research, the viscosity of molten FeO-SiO2 slag was measured in 1573~1673 K using a rotational viscometer. In order to keep the state of iron oxides, the oxygen partial pressure was controlled using CO/CO2 gas mixture. The optimised ratio of CO/CO2 could be calculated using Fe/Fe2+ and Fe2+/Fe3+ equilibria at each temperature. The composition of the slag, particularly Fe valance, after the measurement was analysed with the aid of an inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and an automatic potentiometric titrator. The measurement showed that the FeO-SiO2 slag has considerably low viscosity values in the molten state, and it sharply increases as the temperature decreases. In spite of the careful oxygen partial pressure control, a part of Fe2+ was found to be oxidised to Fe3+, with a maximal case reaching about 20 per cent. The increase in viscosity of FeO-SiO2 at low temperatures can be attributed to the composition change due to an unavoidable Fe2+ oxidation. In addition, the relationship between the change in the viscosity and the liquidus temperature of FeO-SiO2 based slag was discussed to understand the composition dependence of viscosity.

The Coronation Hill gold-platinum-palladium prospect is located in the valley of the South Alligator River (latitude 13'35'S, longitude 132'36'E), about 80 kilometres east of Pine Creek in the Northern Territory. Coronation Hill was one of thirteen sites in the South Alligator Valley at which uranium was mined between 1955 and 1964 after initial discovery by the Bureau of Mineral Resources in 1953. Most of the mines were operated by United Uranium No Liability. The Sleisbeck mine 25 kilometres south of Coronation Hill was operated by North Australian Uranium Corporation and the group of mines at Rockhole about 20 kilometres to the north-west of Coronation Hill was operated by South Alligator Uranium No Liability. The uranium mine at Coronation Hill produced about 26000 tonnes of ore averaging 2.6 kg/t U308 with an estimated average gold grade of 10.4 g/ gold. Gold was commonly associated with the uranium mineralisation and was recovered at the gravity treatment plant at El Sherana. Gold was also recovered in 1986 by Pacific Gold Mines Limited by treating the tailings from the Moline and Rockhole uranium leach plants at a CIP plant at Moline. With the completion of uranium contracts in 1964 mining in the South Alligator Valley ceased. Exploration for uranium continued in the area during the 1960s and 1970s with no success. The Coronation Hill Joint Venture (BHP Gold Mines Limited 45 per cent, Pioneer Minerals (Gold) Pry Ltd 45 per cent, Notgold Limited 10 per cent)carried out the first exploration specifically targetted at gold in 1984 with the drilling of five vertical drill holes which indicated high potential for a substantial gold resource at Coronation Hill with no associated uranium. The Joint Venture has sub- sequently drilled about 25000 metres of diamond drill holes at Coronation Hill alone. Analytical results from 1985 drilling established that platinum and palladium were associated with gold. An indicated resource of 3.49Mt at 5.12g/t Au, 0.21g/t Pt and 0.56g/t Pd has been calculated using a lg/t Au cut off.

Efficient project planning during the detailed feasibility to final engineering stages of a project requires not only the accurate prediction of the grade, tonnes and recovery, but their degree of variability as well. An understanding of the major parameters involved in the grade and tonnage estimates is essential, and the communication to those receiving the results is most important. The personnel involved in the project require more than just a global reserves classification. Quality parameters other than grade should be evaluated as carefully as the estimate itself. This paper does not present any novel ideas to overcome or enhance any of this. Rather, it takes a step back and tries to look at the global picture of requirements for proper project planning.

Thiess Pty LtdÆs Australian Mining business unit used 7.6 PJ of energy in the 2007/2008 financial year. This represented more than 85 per cent of Thiess Pty LtdÆs total energy use and therefore meant that the Australian Mining business unit is required to conduct energy efficiency assessments and report publicly on the outcomes by December 2008 under the Federal GovernmentÆs Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO) Act. Thiess Pty Ltd has a policy commitment to sustainable development throughout its operations. This includes minimisation of its carbon footprint and the Australian Mining business unit has a strong focus on efficiency in all of its operations. It approached the energy efficiency assessment as an opportunity to further improve and build on its energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction focus in the business. As a mine contractor, Thiess faced a number of challenges in designing an assessment process that would be both effective and efficient to deliver. For example, unlike most other companies involved in the Energy Efficiency Opportunities program, the energy use associated with the Australian Mining business unit is not fixed to any single geographic location in Australia. Mining vehicles are moved from site to site according to the specific requirements of mine owners and the timing associated with the commencement and completion of contracts. Thiess departed from a traditional æsite by siteÆ based assessment and designed a ærepresentative assessmentÆ approach that involved detailed investigation of data across all sites and a focused assessment on a single site.Data and analysis was an essential part of the assessment and indicators at company, mine and site level were essential in identifying opportunities and tracking progress. Forty-six potential energy saving opportunities were identified and four of these are currently being implemented. The projects being implemented are: payload management, automating mobile lighting equipment, plant idle time management, and turbo idle downtime. The potential savings from the four major projects that have been identified are approximately 150 800 GJ/annum, equivalent to 10 600 tonnes of CO2-e/annum with a simple payback period of less than two years. Beyond the fuel savings however, there are a number of other benefits from the assessment, including operational efficiency, reduced maintenance costs and even a potential reduction in the number of vehicles required to complete the work. The EEO assessment has significantly increased the importance and urgency of energy efficiency and facilitated the sharing of good practice across all Thiess operations. Not only have four projects been adopted for immediate implementation but a further pipeline of projects is available for future possible implementation. This case study describes: how Thiess conducted its assessment including the use of energy data and indicators, the opportunities identified that are currently being implemented, and the lessons learnt and how other organisations can use these to improve their approach to energy efficiency assessments. This case study is a more comprehensive version of a case study developed for the Commonwealth Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism. The assessment results reported in this case study are drawn from the Thiess Energy Efficiency Opportunities Report 2008.

This paper explores the use of a Process Safety Management (PSM) system to manage risk in the mineral processing and metallurgical refining industries. Important elements of a PSM system are described. International regulations and non-regulatory guidelines covering PSM for high hazard industries are reviewed. Case studies of incidents in the mineral processing and metallurgical refining industries are presented to understand the lessons learned from failure to manage risks using a PSM system. Conclusions are drawn to adopt PSM in the minerals and metals processing industry as a tool for loss prevention and risk management.

A major challenge in managing coal seam gas (CSG) water is predicting how much water will be produced as the industry develops. Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd (KCB) was commissioned by the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM) to develop a tool to forecast where, when and how much CSG water will be produced in the Surat and Southern Bowen Basins under various industry expansion scenarios.The water production tool (WPT) uses the Theis equation, a non-equilibrium groundwater flow equation that accounts for the effect of pumping time on well yield in confined aquifers, to predict water production volumes. Where multiple pumping wells are in close proximity, the required pumping rates for coal seam depressurisation are reduced. Therefore, pumping effects are projected spatially to assess interference effects between wells. Water production is then upscaled to the projected scale of the CSG industry within the Surat and Southern Bowen Basins.Two modifications were made to address the dual phase nature of CSG extraction (a transmissivity reduction factor) and the impact of weathering at the eastern margin of the Surat Basin (a ænear edge effectÆ factor). These factors modify relevant hydrogeological parameters in a consistent and defensible manner to more closely match observed water production.The WPT was verified by comparing results to equivalent Theis equation calculations and to type curves provided by CSG proponents. Calibration was achieved by varying the spatial distribution and intensity of the near edge effect factor in conjunction with a chi-squared analysis of residuals.The tool, which is now being maintained and further developed by the Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry (CWiMI), was built to balance numerical complexity against relative flexibility and simulation speed. The result is a tool that can produce statistically relevant results of prescribed scenarios to plan water handling and treatment requirements in discrete zones of operation.CITATION:Strand, R, Reading, L and Keir, G, 2013. In many cases mine design is the most important driver of the profitability of a mining project, however to reach an æoptimumÆ mine plan many compromises have to be made. Some of the fundamental profit (and loss) drivers relate to stoping methods and stope design parameters. Inevitably trade-offs have to be made between the stability of underground openings, ground support costs and production efficiency. This paper looks at the role of geomechanics in the mine planning and design process. The concepts of æcontrollable lossesÆ and æuncontrollable lossesÆ are developed as a means of partitioning ground control costs. A stope design example is given which provides a method of examining mining costs, and includes a decision making element in order to quantify geotechnical impacts and select stope dimensions. The method also provides a general framework as a means of balancing ground control costs against maximising returns from an underground mining project.

A commercial wet scrubber was used in the SIU-Joy dust control laboratory to test several concepts for improving the dust control efficiency of a wet scrubber. The concepts tested included two filter-two-spray systems, hollow and full-cone sprays, horizontal and vertical sprays, different layer filters and addition of surfactant. The optimised scrubber configuration had water-only vertical sprays for pre-wetting coarse dust, and vertical surfactant-laden water sprays for wetting ultrafine particles. This scrubber configuration reduced dust concentrations from 250 mg/m3 to 1.8 mg/m3. In comparison, the conventional scrubber configuration in the feed provides an outlet dust concentration of 3 - 4 mg/m3 in field operation. Upon successful testing and optimisation of parameters in the laboratory, field demonstration of the concepts was conducted at an Illinois coal mine. The optimised scrubber configuration was tested in the field with good results in terms of improved visibility in the face area and reduced respirable and quartz dust concentrations. Additional modifications in the field involved relocation of the scrubber suction inlets from the bottom to the side and changing the water spray configuration on the miner head. These additional changes were based on a conceptualised spatial dust distribution profile in the face area. The results of these laboratory development and field demonstration studies are presented in this paper.

Large GDP increases in the Pacific Rim countries have been accompanied by similarly large increases in demand for oil products. In the case of residual fuels, this demand has been tempered by the substitution of other energy products such as coal or gas.In the region's developing and newly industrialised nations, it has not been possible to make the very large investements in infrastructure which allow other energy sources to be used for transportation. As a result, GDP growth has been mirrored in the demand growth for automotive fuels. Other non-sustitutable products such as lubricants have also benefitted by the region's GDP growth.The combination of a number of years of sustained growth, coupled with increasing quality requirements is now stretching the upgrading capacity of the region's refineries. If, as seems likely, the region continues to enjoy a high GDP growth rate, then this will be accompanied by increasing reliance on finished products coming out of the Middle East. The owners of the most simple form of refinery in which crude is simply distilled and the naphtha reformed into petrol will face major capital investments. If they decide not to bear this cost, they will face increasing problems in selling their surplus residual fuel oil at an economic price. Quality will become an increasingly important issue. Not only in the well publicised areas such as unleaded petrol, but also for products such as lubricants which play a major role in the efficiency of modem equipment. Quality of service such as hours of opening, ease of access, and service station facilities will also become increasingly important as the oil companies use these to attract customers and gain brand differentiation.

Among the problems of the flotation of sulphides by the thiol collectors is the dependence and varieties of the flotation starting with the time and oxygen contents in the slurry. For sulphides, the flotation stage follows after the electrocatalytic oxidation of the collector with oxygen on the surface of the conductor minerals. The necessity of the oxygen for sulphide flotation (Plaksin and Bessonov, 1957) is in accordance with a corrosion model of a collector surface sorption (Salamy and Nixon, 1954). As Golikov and Nagimyak (1961) showed, the sulphides possess catalytic activity which provides the autoxidation of the xanthates in the sluny to the dixanthogen. This stage can be rather protracted, which limits the speed of the total process. Disulphides constitute important collectors for the sulphide flotation and the optimal degree of the xanthate oxidation is about 20 per cent for different ores (Abramov, 1978) or, following Chanturiya and Nazarova (1977) the surface compositions for various sulphide ores are different and an optimal oxidation degree is variable from five to 25 per cent according to the ore nature. The optimisation of the surface composition is possible by application of the dixanthogens, or by a partial chemical, electrochemical, or catalytic oxidation of xanthates (Desains, 1847; Schall, 1896; Vigdergauz, 1989). According to Rand (1977) and Vigdergauz (1991) sulphides possess different catalytic activities for oxygen electroreduction. In neutral solutions, for example, the following decrease in the order: FeS2 (Fe,Ni)9S8 CuFeS2 FeS; Cu5FeS4 Cu2S; PbS (Vigdergauz, 1991). For the cases of low catalytic activities of the sulphides, the preflotation oxidation of xanthate could be useful to optimise the process kinetics.

Henty Gold Mine is an underground operation producing 100 000 ounces of gold per annum. The original mining method used was flatbacking with paste fill. However, a non-entry method û uphole benching û was introduced in 1998 to recover the deteriorating crown pillars. Initial challenges were encountered, including poor drilling accuracy, difficulty in charging holes and poor rise performance. These challenges were overcome by a Continuous Improvement Team, consisting of mining engineers, supervisors and miners. Following this, the Team implemented further changes aimed at reducing ore loss and dilution. A second area addressed by the Team was development blasting, where innovative detonator technology known as the ExelTM DevelDetTM was introduced and rapidly accepted by the operators. Continued use of the ExelTM DevelDetTM resulted in a number of benefits, such as easier bogging, less perimeter damage, faster charging and hook-up and decreased wastage. Finally, improvements were made in the area of explosive handling, where competency-based training of operators was conducted and manual handling of ANFO has been significantly reduced by the introduction of the MiniMoverTM into the underground magazine.

Social licence to mine is influenced by society’s perception of the mining sector’s ability to effectively rehabilitate mined land and for governments to appropriately regulate that process for the broader community benefit. In Queensland, Australia, many mine rehabilitation personnel working for active coalmines, as either staff, consultants or contractors, belong to the Central Queensland Mine Rehabilitation Group (CQMRG). The CQMRG was established 23 years ago with the aim of sharing informal knowledge related to practical aspects of rehabilitation in order to leave as positive a legacy as possible from mined land. This voluntary group of professionals also includes members from regulatory agencies and civil society. Within the dynamic regional mining environment, mine rehabilitation professionals benefit from sharing their informal knowledge.CQMRG is currently a group in transition. Mining boom and downturn cycles have exacerbated the loss of accumulated knowledge in the core CQMRG membership due to rapid changes in personnel at mines in the region. Additionally, some of the most experienced CQMRG-affiliated rehabilitation practitioners are approaching the end of their careers and want their valuable and less formal knowledge retained. Traditionally, the development of a mineral resource project goes through a fairly set pattern of decisions from what commodities to search for; where to look; how to locate; what are the reserves; how can they be exploited with optimum returns for all stakeholders; where are the markets and what will be the price received; what financing arrangments? However, due to the unique nature of most mineral resource properties, the relative significance of individual parameters on the ultimate development decision will vary from project to project. Sensitivity analysis in its formal sense is most frequently related to the economic analysis of a project particularly in conjunction with the ultimate development decision making process, and acknowledges the uncertainty of the actual values with their impact on the corporate decision making yardsticks. In many cases, this analysis merely adds more values to confuse the decision makers who may well opt for some subjective rationale to overcome the numeric confusion. However, sensitivity analysis should be used more frequently to exploit the development dollar to its maximum, THROUGHOUT the phases leading to the development decision. It is essential to identify the critical inputs to the various decision tiers in a project as early as possible and direct the funds to ensure that these parameters are determined as accurately as possible. Examples are used to illustrate the need for an even-handed quantification of the parameters which affect the outcome of decisions en route to the final one while minimising the risk in making an optimum assessment in relation to development funds Available.

The Engel Model search simulator is described with particular emphasis on preparation of input parameters. The computer has a "black box" role in the same way a telephone or radio is a "black box" in communications. A search technique (sensor) is selected and applied in two stages of'search, namely, reconnaissance and detailed. The model relies on knowing and quantifying the parameters of the target sought and the search technique; this is usually done by analogy studies from available literature and experience. The parameters are then balanced by feasibility studies on the search area. Case histories show that the study makes the user aware of what he is likely to find rather than what he wants or needs to find to be viable. Two case histories are presented: one for Mississippi Valley type lead- zinc deposits and another for stratiform copper. The first study showed particular benefits in the input stage and highlighted the fact that one could expect a lot of encouragement by way of interesting results but with little chance of finding the high-grade,

"Quebrada Blanca is a porphyry copper deposit located in the Eocene-Oligocene belt of Chilean Andes. Operation started in 1994 and original reserves for supergene mineralisation gave a life-of-mine (LOM) of 20 years; however, further exploration extended the LOM until 2020.In order to optimise the remaining five years of supergene resource, geometallurgical variables were added to the geological model including copper recovery and acid consumption. LOM plan encompasses finishing the phase number eight and the future development of phases 11 and 13.LOM lithologies include diorites, quartz monzonites, porphyries, igneous and tourmaline breccias. Main alterations are: potassic, phyllic and argillic. Litho-alterations or geometallurgical units were formed by combining five types of rocks with three types of alteration. According to statistical information, the deposit can be represented with 12 litho-alteration units, which cover 98 per cent of the LOM volume.For copper recovery information, there were 40 mini-columns tests made in order to obtain kinetics curves and copper recovery values after comparing the difference between head and tails grades. Acid consumption was obtained using an automatic neutraliser device-based test.Historical data said that copper recovery in pads after 450 days of irrigation is around 75 per cent of recoverable copper while acid consumption is around 5.5 kg/t.According to this study, lower recoveries are related with potassic-altered diorites and argillic-altered quartz monzonites with values around 60 per cent. On the other hand, best recoveries could be found in potassic-altered quartz monzonites and argillic-altered diorites with values closer to 80 per cent.It was also revealed that the most reactive rock is the potassic-altered diorite with 12 kg/t of acid consumption. This rock covers approximately 40 per cent from phases 11 and 13.The final geomet model was calculated using a program that relates each geometallurgical unit with a specific copper recovery and acid consumption value. ArcelorMittal Prijedor is a goethitic iron ore mine located in the north-west of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which mainly supplies ArcelorMittal’s European subsidiaries. Annual production of the asset stands at the level of 1.5–2.1 million tons of iron ore product which is sent to ArcelorMittal Zenica steelmaking plant. Two types of products with approximately 50 per cent Fe are generated in Prijedor through a process composed by crushing, screening, and magnetic separation stages. Within this process one of the tailings produced is called ‘ultrafines’. The ‘ultrafines’ product corresponds to the desliming hydrocyclones overflow in Prijedor plant, which is classified in a size fraction below 25 μm and corresponds to about 5 per cent of feed. This material is richer in iron than the coarser size fractions of the ore but do not present a good performance in concentration processes. In this way, several studies have been carried out during the last years to find solutions to use the ‘ultrafines’ material without success. In this context, the possibility of dehydroxylate the goethite contained in the material transforming the mineral into hematite and thus increasing the iron grade of the final product was investigated. During the research, several dehydroxylation tests with different temperatures and time of exposure were performed. Using dihydroxylation process at temperatures higher than 800°C it was possible to produce a material with 43 per cent Fe from the original 39 per cent Fe ‘ultrafines’ sample. In addition, the dehydroxylation tests confirmed that goethite becomes completely transformed into hematite at 400°C (with an exposure time of 60 mins) and material is completely sintered at 1200°C. A simulation study based on dehydroxylation tests results showed that it would be possible to use a ‘ultrafines’ product with Fe grade higher than 45 per cent to produce a material with 50 per cent Fe through a complete dehydroxylation process.

The magnitude of the payloads carried by mine haul trucks can have a strong influence on the mine production rates and costs. Consequently control of truck payloads is highly desirable, but in many mines the unavailability of means for measuring payloads reliably, accurately and easily has resulted in a low level of control over truck payloads. Consideration is given to two techniques which are applicable to the measurement of payloads carried by mine haul trucks, namely truck weighing and direct measurement of payloads with truck based systems. Accuracy assessments for two types of truck weighing platforms and two prototype truck based direct payload measurement systems are provided. Results show that weighing platforms based on hydraulic components have proved inadequate, while strain gauge type weighing platforms can estimate payloads to within 2% of true payload when installed, maintained and used correctly. The assessment of the two prototype truck based direct payload measurement systems shows that a high proportion of payloads were estimated to within 5% of the payloads derived from accurate weighing platforms and that these systems appear to have the potential to provide convenient and accurate measurement of payloads. This should enable payloads to be much better controlled than has been possible to date. Predictions of the effect of payloads on production rates and some components of truck haulage costs are possible and some typical results are presented. Accurate prediction of the effect of payloads are not yet possible for some major components of truck haulage costs.
