This paper describes the application of the SBRE framework to model the Olympic Dam deposit, one of the largest copper and uranium deposits in the world. Geostatistical simulations are the best practice for quantifying uncertainty in the mineral value chain and estimating resources. However, these simulations are currently undertaken on an ad hoc basis in the mining industry due to the high requirements in computing resources and capabilities in advanced geostatistics. The SBRE project provides a standard framework to test, build, and run conditional simulation workflows, which has been applied to the Olympic Dam deposit. Conventional geostatistical methods face challenges when modelling the Olympic Dam deposit, such as non-stationarity, non-linear correlations, and a large number of grid blocks to simulate. To address these challenges, a combination of methods was used, including projection pursuit multivariate transform, trend-residual decorrelation, pluri-Gaussian simulations, and turning-bands simulations. Various tools and applications were used to build the model, including in-house developed applications, Autovariogram software (Varify), and the RMSP python library. All computations were accomplished on the AWS cloud using the EC2-Batch service. The final set of simulations was validated using various methods, such as grade-tonnage curves, histograms, swath plots, and variogram reproductions, as well as validation using historical samples back-testing. The study highlights the importance of an automated, modular, and scalable framework in the development of conditional simulation workflows and describes the learning gained from trials of different combinations of methods and software

Submerged arc welding (SAW) is one of the significant metal-joining processes for manufacturing marine vessels, steel pipes, and offshore structures with high deposition rate and engineering reliability. Welding flux serves several essential functions, including atmospheric shielding, arc stabilisation, bead morphology control and weld metal (WM) refinement. Therefore, from a thermodynamic point of view, the focus for flux design and WM compositional/microstructural modification has been placed to elucidating the transfer pathways and mechanisms of major alloying elements, such as Si, Mn, Ti and O during welding. To this end, a thermodynamic model has been established to predict alloying element contents in the WM. Such functions are enabled by the physicochemical properties of the fluxes, which are inherently rooted in the nature of the fluxes. A unique yet systematical investigation, including physicochemical property changes and structural evolution behaviours, has been conducted over the wide range of fluxes applied to actual welding of EH36 shipbuilding steels. Combined with spectroscopic methods, structural behaviours of network formers such as SiO2, Al2O3 and TiO2 and network modifiers such as MgO, MnO and CaO have been illustrated. Viscosity and ionic conductivity have been found to be positively associated with the degree of polymerisation.

‘Like every other commodity, the value of the metals is subject to variation’ (Ricardo, 1817). Mineral commodity price uncertainties have always been a significant issue in mining business due to the close relation between global economic conditions and commodity prices, which commonly generates significant and unexpected price fluctuations. Price forecasts have been driven by economic theory, which states that in the long-run market will be balanced and that prices tend to the marginal cost of production. However, this theory has been misunderstood in the mining industry and future prices through time, in real terms, are assumed to be unchanged. This is unrealistic due to regardless of the cycling nature of economy and the omission of uncertainties. Furthermore, using historical data in traditional price forecast approaches does not guarantee realistic predictions as past events will not necessarily be repeated at the same intervals and with the same intensity. Mining, finance and economic sectors have made significant research efforts to predict prices and control uncertainties through classic linear, Gaussian and probabilistic simulation approaches. However, by definition, uncertainties cannot be measured or accurately modelled. Uncertainties can be identified to measure and manage the associated risks; therefore, uncertainties in mining projects have been historically misinterpreted, erroneously measured and poorly controlled. It is widely known that supply and demand functions drive market prices. While technological development noticeably influences supply, demand is strongly driven by psychological factors, mainly related to customer preferences and lifestyle expectations. Thus, human behaviour is one, or if not, the most important variable to determine commodity prices in a competitive market. During the last decades, alternative methodologies have been used to study uncertainties in human, environmental and market behaviours. Chaos theory, fractals, artificial intelligence and econophysics have been widely and successfully used to investigate complex dynamic systems to address uncertainties over time in the fields of neurosciences, meteorology, aviation and market trading. The application of these techniques in the market suggests a more realistic approach to the business environment. Through the combination of the methodologies above a novel long-run price uncertainties simulation approach that emphasise the differences between risks and uncertainties is proposed in this paper. "Copper-ammonia-thiosulfate?leaching of gold has been researched for several decades as a potential alternative to cyanidation. However, this technology has not yet been applied commercially due to many challenges such as complex solution chemistry, reagent degradation and losses, system instability with losses of precious metals and difficulties in gold recovery from the leachate. Progress has been made at CSIRO in tackling some of these challenges including:better understanding and control of the leach conditions to minimise reagent losses whilst maximising gold recovery use of strong base ion exchange resins to recover the gold strategies to deal with polythionates that adsorb competitively with gold on ion exchange resins development and evaluation of process flow sheets.As a result there has been increased interest from the gold industry and renewed activities to develop thiosulfate based processes for gold recovery. One application area, which has been developed to the point of piloting, is the treatment of gravity gold concentrates using a copper-ammonia-thiosulfate leach with ion exchange recovery of the gold thiosulfate. Major diamond pipes discovered in Western Australia in the late-1970s exhibited a number of unique features that not only resulted in Australia becoming the largest diamond producer in the world in volume terms by 1986 but also changed geological thinking on the primary occurrence of diamond. They were: - lamproite is an alternative primary diamond host to kimberlite. - the extremely high mean grade of the Argyle lamproite pipe at 5 ct per tonne. - the tectonic setting of the lamproite pipes in mobile zones mar- ginal to the Kimberley Craton in contrast to the traditional African setting within stable cratons. Diamond was one of the earliest economic minerals discovered in Australia but 128 years elapsed between its first recognition and the first Australian economic pipe discovery (Argyle). During that period some 200,000 ct of alluvial diamonds were mined in Australia (mostly in New South Wales), but such alluvial output is insignificant on the world scene where annual production today runs at 95 million ct of natural stones some 76010 of which comes from primary pipe sources such as Argyle which alone produces 30 million ct per annum. Of particular significance therefore is the geological nature of the primary diamond source rocks in Australia. The Argyle and Ellendale Pipes are lamproites, differing from kimberlite in their mineralogy and geochemistry, and characterised by the presence of typical lamproite minerals such as leucite, priderite, potassic richterite, and the abnormally high content of chemical elements incompatible with ultramafic rocks. A large number of countries in the world now have some regulation for labelling the presence of genetically modified organisms (GMO) in food. For the last ten years, ISO/TC 34/SC 16 has been providing methods, guidelines and requirements concerning the evaluation of molecular biomarkers including GMOs. This activity makes sure that stakeholders on all sides of commercial transactions are satisfied and their marketing or regulatory needs are met. Developing and maintaining a transparent, science-based environment for users of horizontal methods for molecular biomarker analysis is a high priority. Sampling and analysis of molecular biomarkers has become critically important for food and agricultural organisations developing, producing, distributing and selling genetically engineered, non-genetically engineered, identity preserved and/or organic crops and their derived products and preventing their respective destructive diseases. To aid in international harmonisation, a new work item proposal to develop an ISO type A management system standard (MSS) for organisations including laboratories using molecular biomarker analysis and sampling has been submitted to ISO/TC 34/SC 16. The purpose of this MSS is ensuring that determination of the presence, absence or quantification of a particular biomarker with a relationship to a product quality determinant, a marketing claim, a regulation or a plant pathogen is carried out under a suitable quality assurance / quality control system. Red Dome Mine was a highly complex gold copper operation developed over a number of phases between mid-1986 to October 1997. With only three years of production ahead at any time, a proactive practical approach to mine closure was necessary. In 1989 the Domains Concept to life-of-mine planning and mine closure was created as a response to the proposed changes to legislation.The Domains Concept, a relatively simple idea developed to integrate mine closure during production at Red Dome, has been broadly adopted by both government agencies and industry in the intervening 20 year period. Over time the author has observed that the concept has been poorly applied, misunderstood and in some cases even misrepresented. As a consequence, the potential opportunities from applying the concept, including the optimisation and minimisation of life-of-mine costs, mitigation of long-term financial liability exposures and building credibility with the general community, have been missed.This paper examines the many benefits, advantages, applications and perceived barriers to developing and integrating a fully costed life-of-mine plan. Integrating the Domains Concept early in the project, within the operational budgeting, allows the production of a meaningful and useful document, representative of a whole life-of-mine, cradle to grave, with measurable rehabilitation and closure outcomes when the concept is used to full effect.The Domains Concept serves to optimise cost-effective, whole of mine, life cycle planning which provides beneficial outcomes for the community, significantly mitigates legacy issues and contributes to the attainment of compliance and sustainability principle objectives.CITATION:McCarthy, B E, 2014. Nuclear techniques have been used to determine the solids weight fraction (W) and ash content of (fine) coal in slurries independent of voidage variations. The method is based on the correlation between W and the hydrogen concentration Hsl (wt/wt) of the slurry. Hsl is determined by combining measurements of neutron moderation and ?-ray transmission. Both Wand ash content are determined by combining the above measurements with the ash-sensitive measurement of X-ray backscatter compensated by a measurement of iron K X-ray intensity.The nuclear analysis system, called the SIRO coal slurry gauge, has been proved in a six-week plant trial at the BHP Steelworks washery at Newcastle, NSW. Several probes, each containing a radioisotope source and scintillation detector, were immersed directly into the coal slurry in the feed box upstream from the bank of flotation cells. For 140 samples W, ash and voidage varied in the ranges of 0 to 13 wt percent, 26 to 41 wt per cent and 0 to 4 vol. per cent, respectively. The r.m.s. difference in solids weight fraction, determined by probe measurements and conventional assay, was 0·52 wt per cent. Ash was determined with an r.m.s. difference of 2·0 wt percent in the coal. Better sampling techniques were used in the last half of the plant trial, and r.m.s. differences were 0.35 wt per cent solids and 1·5 wt per cent ash.

Research in the field of cut-off grade optimisation has shown a relationship between cut-off grade, project life and net present value (NPV). Lane’s theory demonstrates that cut-off grades can be optimised in order to maximise project profitability. Although the theory forms the basis for many open pit mining projects, application of the theory in underground mining remains limited to-date. The main reason for this is the complex interaction between all processes in underground mine planning, which makes it difficult to apply Lane’s mathematical optimisation approach.Recently a new stope optimiser product was released. The AMS Stope Optimiser automates the design of underground stopes at user-defined cut-off grades and allows for rapid evaluation of mine designs at different cut-off grades. Using this software, an optimisation approach was developed and validated on an underground gold deposit in northern Sweden. Potential project NPV increased by approximately 30 per cent when using this new approach.Spatial grade uncertainty in mineral resources was identified to be a major risk in underground stope design. The optimisation approach was further extended to account for grade risk using estimated and stochastic simulated resource models. High fluid pressures and deformation have been instrumental in the formation of high-grade gold lodes at the Archaean granite greenstone 12 Moz Sunrise Dam gold deposit in Western Australia. Historically, predicting the location of these lodes has been difficult due to the irregular nature and high-grade nugget characteristics of the deposit. Recent exploration successes and the discovery of the Vogue system have led to an improved knowledge of the deep extents of the mine. This new structural and gold distribution data has enabled a new 3D interpretation of the system and has provided a better insight into the links between deformation, fluid pressure evolution and gold deposition. Here we employ 3D geomechanical and coupled fluid flow modelling to better constrain areas of high strain partitioning, rheological failure and focused fluid flow, which provides a substantially increased predictive capacity for further within-mine exploration. The localisation of deformation in and around the main felsic porphyry and major shallow shear zones provides critical insights into fluid pathways that have contributed to the distribution of fracture networks and ultimately gold deposition during late stage deformation events. Best practice standards generally recommend assessment of the environmental and societal risks posed by tailings storage facilities, but they rarely specify how the analysis should be made. As a case study, this paper describes a safety assessment of the Zelazny Most tailings pond operated by the Hydrotechnical Unit of KGHM Polska Miedz SA in Poland. The complete assessment includes a failure mode effect criticality analysis (FMECA) that considers all conceivable failure modes, but this paper focuses on one key mode, the loss of stability during the planned raising of the crest above its current level. Reliability against static dam failure considers uncertainty on the safety factor in a limit equilibrium approach. The threat of dynamic (earthquake induced) instability is assessed by developing a model of future seismicity as a function of the mining plan and considering uncertainty on the induced permanent displacements along critical sliding surfaces. We quantify the additional level of protection against outflow provided by the beach using an event tree with expert-assigned probabilities. Continuous monitoring of the dam for premonitory signs of instability and a set of loss-prevention plans in the case of a spill provide additional layers of protection; their effectiveness is quantified by estimating the fraction of the population that could be evacuated as a function of warning time. The Kanmantoo Copper Project is owned and operated by Hillgrove Resources Limited and is situated in the Adelaide Hills region in South Australia. Mining in the area has taken place off and on over the last 140 years to recover metal from both copper and lead-zinc ores. A new framework that collates and interprets pre-existing data to assess vulnerability and ultimately plan to avoid or minimise flood-related risk to infrastructure, people, downtime, environment and revenue has been developed. The æClimate Related Adaptation from Terrain Evaluation ResultsÆ (CRATER) method tested at a coal mine in Queensland, provides semi-quantitative information to assist decision makers when designating investment for minimising vulnerability of mining operations to climate. Here we present the processes involved in this three-step approach that uses pre-existing spatial data of the mine site and local knowledge to build a set of visual tools to assist decision-making. The first step of the process is performing multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) within a geographic information system (GIS) on ranked natural conditions at the mine, such as elevation, slope, drainage, soil and vegetation, which is performed to identify critical flood areas. Secondly, a fault-tree analysis identifies how impact can occur and what options there are for impact reduction. Finally, a resource assessment of the mineÆs capacity to adapt reduces the adaptation options to those most suited to the mine. The results are confidential, but for the purpose of introducing the methodology, we present simplified results, particularly of steps 2 and 3. CRATER can also be used for future æwhat-ifÆ flooding scenarios to identify the most suitable locations for roads, buildings or other critical infrastructure. The methodology is transferable to any mine, series of mines or locations along the mining value chain that have sufficient data, providing a practical decision-making tool to identify æno-regretsÆ actions that not only could reduce downtime after or during an event, but in some cases may enhance production between extreme events. The Croydon Gold Mine is located in northwest Queensland and is a joint venture between Central Coast Exploration N.L. and Pancontinental Mining Ltd. The mining operation commenced in 1987 and consists of satellite open pit mines feeding a central Carbon-In-Pulp gold Treatment Plant. The gold mineralisation is hosted by quartz veins within the Croydon Volcanic Group and the Esmeralda Granite, a cogenetic igneous suite of Middle Proterozoic age. The mineralisation comprises gold and silver with associated basemetals. The gold and silver electrum occurs as extremely fine free grains. The gold distribution is heterogenous occuring across the full vein width, or restricted to the footwall or hangingwall. The average mineral resource grade is 3.5 g/t. The deposits are all hard rock and mining is carried out by drill and blast technique. All mining activity is carried out by a mining contractor. Mining is by a selective mining method which entails the drilling, blasting and extraction of the hangingwall waste prior to orebody extraction.

The Filblast Cyanidation Process incorporates the advantages of intense high shear mixing, high dissolved oxygen concentration and high pressure to achieve extremely rapid gold dissolution rates. This is made possible by the unique design of the Filblast gas shear reactor. The reactor is a rugged and compact in-line device. The outer casing is protected by a polyurethane coating and the internal parts are of wear resistant polymer. The largest unit built to-date has overall dimensions of 1200 mm length by 300 mm diameter and has a capacity of 150 dry tonnes per hour at 40 - 45 per cent solids. Service life at this throughput is at least three months. The process may further be applied to high temperature leaching of refractory gold ores or other metals. Wear resistant metal or ceramic materials would be employed for this duty. Four mines are currently employing the Filblast Process for treating a variety of ore types ranging from highly reactive, almost impossible to treat, pyrrhotite/arsenopyrite to deeply weathered clay ore which forms a highly viscous pulp. The effect of shear thinning has resulted in improved adsorption kinetics resulting in higher carbon loading and reduced soluble gold loss. Total tonnage treated is approximately four million. Operating costs which include leasing and maintenance charges for the Filblast and pump power costs are about 16 cents per tonne. This is equivalent to about ten per cent of savings. Laboratory scale units having capacities up to 30 litres/min are available for test work but laboratory testing techniques so far developed do not accurately reflect the oxygen and cyanide savings which have been achieved in the plant.

Hard rock TBMs are very often open machine layouts, with just a part roof shield over the front of the machine. The whole system is designed for fast face advance and the economy of the project often depends entirely on the rate of advance. Typically, hard rock conditions will demonstrate stable and good ground for a major part of the tunnel. However, short sections of crushed shear zones with clay and gouge material may cause serious time delays. Spiling rock bolting has been proven to be very efficient under such circumstances, provided the fully grouted rebar bolts can be placed in a controlled and practical manner.Environmental restrictions are becoming more and more a part of tunnel excavation projects. Even hard rock TBM tunnelling may require a strict ground water control, because of consequences on the ground surface from lowering the ground water level. Such consequences may be surface settlement, negative influence on ground water resources or damage to vegetation.Pressure injection ahead of the advancing tunnel face (in this paper named pre-injection), using microfine cement and chemical grouts, is today a proven technology. As examples can be mentioned (Garshol, 1997) about 100 km of pre-injected tunnels below Oslo City and about the same length of subsea tunnelling elsewhere in Norway. Examples from other parts of the world are also available, like below Stockholm, Sweden, the Inland Feeder project and Hollywood Metro both in Southern California.To take advantage of spiling rockbolts and pre-injection, it is an obvious prerequisite to be able to drill the necessary boreholes in the right positions and at the correct angle. In drill and blast excavation this is simple, but in TBM projects it has repeatedly turned out to be difficult. More than once owners have accepted bids containing reassurance from the contractor that the drilling method will be sorted out later. Experience shows that if ælaterÆ means after start of the TBM operation, it is often too late.

Longwall mining is by far the most common method of underground coal extraction in Australia. Industry trends and expectations are placing increasing emphasis on the reliability and productivity of these operations. Longwalls are becoming wider and longer while retreat rates are continuously increasing due to significant improvements achieved in longwall equipment reliability and automation. This increased longwall productivity is placing significant emphasis on the reliability of longwall panel development.Although there have been significant improvements in the reliability of continuous miners and hydraulic drill rigs, the traditional resin-encapsulated bolt installation is still the principal method used in all major coal producing countries around the world. Anglo American realised that an opportunity existed to introduce an alternative roof bolt installation technique called ‘spin-to-stall’ (STS) into Australia. STS was first introduced by Anglo American Coal in South Africa, where it has been successfully used for over a decade, though implementation of South African STS resin in Australia has proven to be near impossible. Therefore, a new STS development project was initiated between Anglo American Coal and Jennmar Australia. The long-term production schedule of open pit mines that maximises the net present value (NPV) of a given project relies on the proper design of phases (pushbacks) within the ultimate pit limits. There is not a phase design algorithm applied in the mining industry today that gives yearly production schedules that are optimum.The majority of phase design algorithms currently in use by the mining industry aims at grouping the blocks that fall within the ultimate pit limits into phases such that the average value of the blocks within each phase decrease as the size of the phases increase. Current phase design methods are typically based on a pit limit optimisation algorithm, originally introduced by Lerchs and Grossmann (LG) in 1965. To obtain multiple pit shells to be used for the phase design, the LG pit limit algorithm successively applied to economic block models by changing the price of the commodity or some other factor that properly parameterises the size of the pit. These modified economic block models are developed by predetermining the destination for each block in the model based on a breakeven analysis and highest economic outcome between alternative destinations. Phase designs determined by these existing algorithms may be suboptimal if a given project utilises multiple processing facilities for metal recovery and particularly if these facilities have restrictions (constraints) that require blending of attributes in the feed. To overcome these problems in obtaining phases that optimise overall production schedules, a new algorithm is developed at the Colorado School of Mines. The algorithm determines the phases of an open pit mine by taking into account multiple process options for the blocks and period by period blending requirements. This algorithm has been implemented within a software program (the software) and is being prototyped successfully in the design of improved pushbacks at a copper mine in South America and on a gold mine in Nevada. This presentation will demonstrate the shortcomings of the traditional phase design methodologies based on comparison of results coming from the new approach versus the traditional.

Currently, social impact assessment (SIA) is used to determine social impacts across the life-of-mine (LOM) to closure. This paper draws on recently completed SIA reports from the Martha gold mine in Waihi and qualitative interviews in the community that explored post-closure options, to review the challenges mining companies face when engaging with iwi4 through the SIA process and what that may mean for closure planning. The Maori of New Zealand consistently lobby to have a distinct voice in resource management issues. This is in line with the evolution of indigenous participation in SIA globally and with New Zealand policies, not least of which, the Treaty of Waitangi (the founding document of New Zealand) makes provision for Maori self-determination with regard to natural resources. Land use for mining has been a source of conflict for Maori and mining can have profound cultural and social impacts on the Maori community, yet despite Treaty intentions their representation in SIA has been comparatively limited. With this in mind, the Waitangi Tribunal has released the Ko Aotearoa Tenei (Wai 262) report, which recommends far reaching reforms to laws and policies affecting Maori culture and identity including natural resource management. This landmark report seeks to move the Maori-Government relationship beyond grievance to partnership. Given suggested policy changes in Wai 262 and the risks of poorly conceived closure planning, it is timely to review where Maori currently fit into the SIA process. The findings of this research suggest that improvements to the outcomes of this process will require companies to act beyond compliance. "Decision-making in mining is a challenging task. Optimal decisions regarding shovel and truck allocations, aligned with the optimal short-term production schedules, are crucial in keeping the operations in line with the company’s long-term objectives. In this paper, we present two main modelling components as the means to achieve near-optimal operational plans: a mixed integer linear goal programming model to allocate trucks and shovels to mining faces over a shift-by-shift basis so that operating costs are minimised and resource utilisations are maximised through the planning horizon a discrete-event simulation model to investigate the behaviour of a truck-and-shovel haulage system in the presence of uncertainty within mining operations. The goals integrated into the mathematical model are to: maximise production minimise deviations from the target head grade minimise deviations in tonnage feed to the processing plants from the desired feed minimise operating cost.The mathematical model provides shovel assignments and the target productions as an input to the discrete event simulation model while meeting the desired goals and constraints of the mining operation. We illustrate the applications of the discrete event simulation model by presenting a large-scale oil sands case study.
