Wall control blasting practices are necessary to reduce the impact of blasting on mine faces but can also have a significant negative impact on mine productivity and operating costs. The conventional practice in deep open pit mines is to use so-called trim blasts adjacent to pit walls. To provide burden relief these trim blasts have fewer rows than full production blasts and are fired to a cleared free-face; hence they are termed æunchokedÆ. This practice leads to scheduling constraints on the pit operations and can cause ore dilution due to excessive muckpile movement. The use of such trim blasts stems from the perception that increased wall damage results from æchokedÆ blasts. These concerns are based on the unproven assumptions that blast vibration levels and explosive gas penetration increase with increased blast burden and face confinement. This paper describes work undertaken as part of a major investigation into wall control blasting at the KCGM Fimiston Mine, Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. It details a study to assess damage effects due to blast burden. Borehole air pressure measurements and borehole video camera inspections were done behind a series of single blastholes drilled with varying burden distances, as well as behind a dedicated trim blast and a full production blast. It was found that the measured damage effects, including visible rock cracking, dilation, and the limited extent of gas penetration behind the blastholes, did not vary significantly with burden or blast type for the cases tested. This result was in complete agreement with detailed vibration measurements conducted by Blair and Armstrong (2001) during the study, which found that vibration was independent of blast burden. As a result of these investigations, changes to the blasting practices at the mine were implemented. Dedicated trim blasts and free-face blasting have been replaced by modified production blasts and the practice of æchokingÆ blasts has been introduced. This has resulted in a significant improvement in productivity and cost savings without compromising pit wall integrity.

This paper presents an empirical design methodology that is based on successful US roof support systems using both primary and secondary support in coal mining entries and intersections. The recent nationwide dramatic reduction of roof fall rates, especially in areas with weaker roof, can be directly correlated to the effectiveness of the roof support systems. A large database of roof fall histories at several mines is used to define the approximate boundaries of three modes of roof support with respect to roof strength as classified by the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) and in situ vertical stress as indicated by the depth of cover. These roof support classifications are: • Suspension, where roof bolts mainly provide skin control for strong roof. • Beam building or reinforcement, where a roof of moderate strength can be supported by roof bolts only. • Supplemental (secondary) support, where the primary support by roof bolts may be augmented by several secondary support systems, eg cable bolts, trusses, additional roof bolts or standing supports. The Primary Support Rating index (PSUP) captures the capacity of the primary roof bolt system as a function of the actually implemented roof control plan, ie roof bolt length, roof bolt density, and roof bolt capacity, while it does not consider the type of bolt. The actual PSUP value is compared against a suggested PSUP value derived from statistical analysis of US case histories. Where secondary support is indicated, the expected rock load determines the necessary capacity of the secondary support system. A new (free) software package, Analysis of Mine Roof Support (AMRS), implements the design methodology and also allows comparison with other international indices such as the Reinforcement Density Index (RDI), the PRSUP, etc.

The Thalanga massive sulphide deposit is hosted by Upper Cambrian rhyolites and volcaniclastics of the Mt. Windsor Volcanics near their contact with overlying dacites, rhyolites and sediments of the Trooper Creek Formation. The ores and host rocks have been subjected to a single strong deformation and to lower to middle greenschist facies metamorphism. A main lens with surface gossan dimensions of 55U m x 6 m dips steeply, plunges shallowly to the west and is offset by a series of normal faults. It is flanked by smaller lenses to the east where the mineralized horizon is stopea out by granite. The area to the east and south of the gossan is masked by Tertiary cover. A complex exhalite package is represented by banded sphalerite-pyrite- galena-chalcopyrite, massive pyrite and chalcopyrite and assemblages dominated by dolomite, chlorite-actinolite, tremolite, talc, barite and rare gypsum. Accessory tetrahedrite, arsenopyrite, bismuthinite, magnetite and native gold are associated locally. Pods of quartz-magnetite formed distally. The ores are underlain by strongly to moderately pyrite-silica-sericite altered rhyolites with the strongest alteration closest to an interred synvolcanic fault. This alteration is characterised by an enrichment in MgO, Na2O, FeS2 and base metals with a depletion in CaO and Na2O. There is a general enrichment in Pb and Zn towards the hanging wall with some enrichment of Cu near the base of the main lens due to replacement by ore tiuias near vent discharge sites. Mining operations in the Obuasi mine of AngloGold Ashanti Limited began in 1897 using mainly gravity concentration and amalgamation to recover the gold from predominantly high-grade quartz ores. The mine is primarily an underground operation, although some surface mining still takes place. Ore is currently processed by two main treatment plants: the Sulfide Treatment Plant (STP) for underground ore and the tailings treatment plant for tailings reclamation operations. STP was commissioned in February 1994 to treat 180 000 t/m of double refractory gold ore and it hosted the then world's largest commercial scale bacterial oxidation plant which uses Gencor's BIOX« technology. Gold is recovered by gravity and flotation, with the regrinding of the sulfide concentrate before bio-oxidation to liberate locked gold in sulfi de minerals. The BIOX« product is leached using the carbon in leach (CIL) process. Gravity gold recovery is a major component of STP operations and its contribution to overall plant recovery is about ten to 13 per cent. Gravity recovery has undergone series of technological upgrading, since the very first circuit which consisted of a Knelson concentrator and a Gemeni shaking table which was incorporated into the milling circuit at the start of the plant. Presently, each of the gravity circuits which consists of Knelson concentrator(s), cyclones and Gekko InLine Reactors (ILR), are located at the Milling and BIOX« circuits. More recently a new gravity recovery facility comprising of four 48 inch Knelson concentrators and cluster of ten inch cyclones have been incorporated at the tail of the flotation circuit. An additional ILR will be commissioned in 2010 to treat the concentrate generated from the new Semi Autogenous Mill #2 (SAG 2) Knelson: concentrator tower under construction. Since the inception of STP, significant gravity recoverable gold has been recovered via Knelson concentrators and the employed circuits have seen a number of modifications and upgrades, motivated by ore mineralogical changes and recovery concerns. The pioneering adoption of the ILR technology in 2001 and 2003 was a critical factor in enhancing the improved recovery benefit of the gravity circuits. Therefore the objective of this paper is to highlight the mine's experience in the gravity recoverable gold process with emphasis on plant modifications and gravity equipment upgrade. Operational challenges and the contribution of gravity gold to overall plant recovery are also discussed.

The decision making check-list and hierarchy of information for process and plant design is generally wide-ranging and complex. The nature of grades, mineralisation and ore types in an ore body, its mine development sequence, and the body of results from metallurgical and physical test work present complex and competing influences on flowsheet development, values for design, equipment selection, plant efficiencies and operating strategy. The challenge is how to manage all these variables, to understand their impacts on performance, and how best to provide a cost-effective plant design and robust process that meets daily/weekly/monthly operating objectives. Throughput, production and grade or product specifications need to be met. The ore body is not average; its range of metallurgical and physical characteristics may be moderately to highly variable. This paper assesses some of the key competing influences and conflicting issues in design and equipment selection, and their effect on production and performance expectations.

With the depletion of high-grade lump iron ore, concentrates have been identified as an alternative material for sinter making. Adding concentrates to the sinter mixture reduces sinter bed porosity and gas flow through the sinter bed. This will result in lower sinter strand productivity. A potential solution to this problem is to add concentrate in the form of micropellets. This study investigates the effect of concentrate and micropellet additions on the permeability of the sinter mixture. Permeability was measured on sinter mixtures containing ten to 40 per cent concentrates and micropellets at various moisture contents. The effect of concentrate and micropellet addition on the permeability–moisture relationship was examined. The results confirmed that the addition of concentrates into the sinter mix decreases the maximum permeability of the sinter bed. The incorporation of micropellets into the sinter mix reduced the permeability less than concentrate addition. The study also showed that the maximum permeability of sinter mixes containing concentrate is reached at the same moisture content as the sinter mixture without concentrate addition. For sinter mixes containing micropellets, additional water must be added to obtain maximum permeability. Three principal features of the ore at Captain's Flat, New South Wales, tend to complicate concentration of the valuable minerals, these being:1. The ore occurs in three more or less separate bodies which vary in texture and mineral ratios. Mining of constant proportions of the three sections, or adequate blending of the ore, is not fully effective, and consequently the flotation section is subjected to feedof varying texture.2. The mineral association in the heavily pyritic ore is extremely intimate. Composite particles exist even at 20 micron sizeI, and probably finer.3. The copper content of the ore averages_about 0,6%, which is high enough to justify recovery of the chalcopyrite in a separate concentrate. A review of the metallurgical history of the mine shows that this feature has been the cause of the several major changes in flowsheet of the flotation section since the commencement of milling.METALLURGICAL HISTORYThe mine started production in January 1939, at the rate of 250 tons per day of sulphide ore, assaying 0·68% Cu, 6·52% Pb, 10·8% Zn, and about 1 dwt. The Mount Isa copper deposit is located adjacent to the city of Mount Isa, Queensland, and lies within a series of Palaeoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic Superbasins. The deposit is hosted almost entirely within the Urquhart Shale (US), a unit of the Mount Isa Group sediments and part of the Isa Superbasin. The copper mineralisation is separated into two distinct orebodies: the X41 mine (1100 and 1900 orebodies) and the Enterprise mine (3000 and 3500 orebodies). The orebodies are situated in the hanging wall of the major controlling structures, the Paroo Fault, which has juxtaposed older basement Eastern Creek Volcanics against the younger Mount Isa Group sediments cf 1655 ± 4 Ma. Conjecture remains over the exact timing of this thrust event. However, it is clear that inflections on the Paroo Fault have a close association with the orebodies and are an important structural feature in the mineralisation of the Mount Isa copper deposit.The life-of-mine is reducing steadily and new geomechanical modelling techniques were employed to target structurally controlled mineralised zones in three dimensions. Following a structural review of the mine using underground mapping, structural data and core shed observations, a conceptual 3D mine model was constructed utilising existing data modelled in MineSight®. This conceptual model included all the main lithological units and structures. The conceptual model aimed to test the effects of deformation on the main lithological and structural components of the system and attempted to highlight areas of anomalous stress and strain that may indicate a higher likelihood of fluid focusing and mineralisation potential. This project was focused on testing the latter stages of a D3 event (NE–SW compression) and D4 event (SE–NW compression), which are considered to be responsible for the current location of the mineralisation.The fully coupled 3D finite element analysis models resulted in highlighting anomalous patterns of stress and strain and subsequent fluid flow as a result of the two deformation events. The NE–SW D3 simulation provided the best correlation with the known distribution of mineralisation. This event also indicated several areas on the Paroo Fault and within the US that have potential to host further areas of mineralisation. The SE–NW D4 simulation provided less of a correlation with known mineralised zones. However, this event may have been responsible for post mineralisation re-mobilisation of copper on a relatively small scale. Areas of maximum shear strain, shear stress, volumetric strain and fluid flow correlated well with areas of minimum principal stress and provided the best overall match with known mineralised zones. Furthermore, several additional highlighted areas provide a high potential for further discovery of copper mineralisation. Recent exploration drilling north of the Enterprise mine 3000 orebody, utilising geomechanical modelling as part of the targeting criteria, intersected copper mineralisation, providing further validation of the modelling results.CITATION:McLellan, J G, O’Sullivan, R, Miller, B and Taylor, D, 2014. Channel iron deposits (CID) currently supply over 40 per cent of the seaborne iron ore trade out of the Hamersley Province. The two well documented producing systems (Robe and Marillana palaeochannels) were both discovered during early reconnaissance mapping principally by BHP Billiton (BHPB) and Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA) during the mid 1950s to early 1960s. Both crop out extensively over the majority of their length. Hot on the heels of Fortescue Metals Group 2004 - 2005 discovery of approximately 2.6 billion tonnes (Bt) of undercover iron ore mineralisation in the Chichester Range, the Fortescue Exploration Department turned its attention elsewhere throughout the Hamersley Province. Reappraisal and analysis of publicly available data and ground truthing of developing models led to the recognition of the Solomon palaeochannel system. Subsequent exploration defined a world-class Resource of some 1.9 Bt of iron ore mineralisation of which the great majority is buried CID. Apart from the Marillana CID system, the Solomon region is the only major CID with significant tonnes of sub two per cent alumina CID with over 500 Mt delineated to date. Exploration has also outlined significant supergene bedded and detrital iron ore mineralisation. Ongoing drilling is expected to increase the resource base both in terms of tonnes and confidence. This paper outlines the principal contributing factors which led to the discovery of the Solomon CID and compares its geology with the Robe and Marillana palaeochannel systems.

This abstract discusses a heap leach copper mine that was failing to perform and as a result was not meeting targeted production. The mine had numerous technical challenges including: high water inflows, low levels of geotechnical monitoring, performance issues with mining, resource model and grade control reconciliation issues, and unexplained low levels of performance from the heap leaching operations. A team from various organisations with specialist skill sets including: a forensic accountant, the owner’s representative and a mining engineer, was arranged to visit the site. The task was to investigate the situation and determine what could be done to turn the performance of the mine around. After an initial assessment in late 2018, efforts were directed to better understanding the operations and improving the performance of the site through preventative management. A key part included the creation of production forecasts that could be achieved that would help restore confidence in the operations. Uncertainty in the mine achieving production forecasts and the performance of the heap leaching operations were contributing to the decline of the operations. Investigations uncovered the fact that while the resource model could reliably predict total copper, a lack of sequential leach data meant the accurate prediction of soluble and insoluble copper species, both important for heap leaching, was difficult to do with any degree of certainty. The crushing and mining contractors also appeared to have suffered somewhat from a lack of management by the owner’s team and performance had affected the production of copper. Collaboration and management were used by the team to understand and stabilise the operations. Ongoing collaborative efforts by the management team, site personnel and contractors resulted in a positive outcome for the owners and their mine – and could at yours.

This study data has been collected on a three-month period from November 2020 to January 2021 and based on three different pits: Vindaloo Main, Vindaloo Central and Bouere. Both pits having specific geotechnical and geological properties. Vindaloo Main, VIM, and Central, VIC, have the same mineral composition as volcanic tuff with felsic intrusion or monzodiorite, both rock mass is fractured with small joint. Geotechnically the uniaxial compressive strength UCS between 200 to 300 Mpa, Young’s Modulus 110 Gpa and Poisson’s ratio between 0.1 to 0.2. Bouere pit is basically made of volcanic tuff stock works as intrusive, UCS between 200 to 300 Mpa, Young’s Modulus 103 Gpa and Poisson’s ratio between 0.2 to 0.3. The first step of this study was to collect various data from mining operations around the drilling and blasting inputs. This was based around the different scenario of drilling parameters and the outcomes on the blasting, and how they impact load and haul operations and productivities of excavators from the heave to the last flitch. In most cases surface photos of the blast do not represent the overall fragmentation in the blast volume. Photos of the different flitches will not show only the effect of blast, as the loading operation generating more fragmentation by applying weight on the muck pile. Then the record of the different material uses for feeding. The last part of the analysis is the physical data from process plant such as particle size, throughput rate, both for the crusher and the mill, per pit and material and the specific Bond Work index (BWI). Fine particle quantity production is also a key point as is one direct indicator of milling performance. In overall, making link to BWI can influence at each stage of the mining to the processing operation. Drill and blast constitute a high cost in hard rock mining and trying to reduce these costs without an overview of all the integrated processes and context could end up by cost relocating to other activities in the process. However, the cost associated to size reduction builds exponentially as the particle size becomes smaller.

In the present study, from experimental results, a new concept of possibility of flotation separation of quartz from feldspar is presented. The effect of the nonionic surfactant Brij 58 on the flotation behaviour of quartz and feldspar has been investigated. The effect of the surfactant adsorption at the solid-liquid interface was also studied. The results demonstrate that maximum flotability of quartz occurred at low concentration of surfactant. Feldspar is not collected by this surfactant. Flotation tests with feldspar that had previously been subjected to leaching by hydrochloric acid yielded similar flotation response as that of quartz. The effect of removal of alkali cations from feldspar surface on its flotability was investigated. The effects of inorganic and organic additives on the flotation recovery of quartz are discussed in terms of the slating-out or salting-in properties of these additives. This paper presents the results of in-situ and laboratory investigations into a mining method which utilises conventional continuous mining techniques to carry out two passes in thick coal seams, resulting in the development of stable pillars with relatively small width dimensions and heights up to 6 m. Geotechnical investigations included structural mapping, brightness logging and standard laboratory testing. Virgin stress was measured using overcoring techniques. Two approaches to pillar design were used in the study. These were; pillar design based on empirical formulae and laboratory testing, and pillar disign using calibrated mathematical models. A trial panel was developed at 300 m depth to study pillar deformation and stress changes due to mining. The extent of rib deformation was studied using borescopes and extensometers. In-situ geotechnical measurements were used to calibrate displacement discontinuity and finite element mathematical models of the coal seam. These models were then used to predict the behaviour of a small panel of pillars which were to be developed to 6 m height. The mining method was shown to be feasible provided adequate rib support was installed. The benefit of rib support was found to be two-fold, in that it increased confinement of the pillar in zones of low horizontal stress, while reducing horizontal stress relaxation in zones of high horizontal virgin stress. The possiblity of roof control by designing the small pillars to yield on retreat is discussed.

Major cities are not only the focal point for AustralianÆs work, leisure and homes, they also are the focal point for the flow of resources into the built environment, motor cars and transportation and urban consumables. The steady increases in æstockÆ and waste generation, in line with GDP growth, means that cities will become the mine sites of the future if the inherent value is recovered from these materials at end of life. The urban waste stream can be characterised as containing approximately nine per cent hydrocarbon-based materials; 57 per cent biomass-based material; 28 per cent fully mineralised materials that are inert, five per cent metals and less than one per cent of problematic materials that are potentially hazardous and toxic. In order to convert these wastes into value added inputs into the economy, a number of technological interventions are required. These æurban waste mining techniquesÆ revolve around source separation and material streaming. One issue that needs to be overcome when determining which mining technique to implement, is identifying the option that will deliver optimal value, both from a financial and a sustainability perspective. The difference between embodied energy and calorific value is a case in point. Highest net resource value (HNRV) is a concept that can assist in choosing between different resource recovery options. The assessment can be done at a strategic level, or can be used to work out material specific issues. For example, used tyres can be recovered for their energy content at an approximate cost of $120 per tonne, whereas mechanical processing of used tyres can deliver a net benefit of $192.

PanAust’s Phu Kham copper-gold operation (Phu Kham) in Laos is currently limited by throughput in the Semi Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mill. The ability to accurately predict SAG mill throughput (throughput) is therefore critical to accurately forecast copper and gold production. During the fourth quarter of 2016 the proportion of hard unweathered rocks in the mill feed increased, resulting in a period of lower than expected throughput. These low throughput rates prompted a study with the aim of identifying a practical solution for throughput predictions. The study identified an empirical modelling approach based on actual SAG mill throughput rates. The empirical model was then optimised by linear programming to identify the ideal feed blend of unweathered rocks to achieve a maximum SAG mill throughput.Rock strength was the initial focus of the throughput study at Phu Kham because previous studies had identified a strong link between rock strength and throughput. It was determined that there was insufficient valid data to adequately model but sufficient data to qualitatively characterise rock strength. The data identified that the weathering and lithology had a controlling influence on the rock strength. Complicating throughput predictions were operational improvements (changes to blasting and mill settings) implemented in response to the lower than expected throughput. This created uncertainty with the throughput equations. A self-learning empirical modelling method was developed to predict the throughput by incorporating fundamental rock properties with operational practices and improvements. The method is based on the proportion of mill feed with similar weathering and lithology (a proxy for comminution performance) and the actual mill throughput using the SAG mill as the analytical instrument. The modelling method simultaneously incorporated the sum and interaction of unmodelled influences including blasting, crushing and mill settings. The empirical modelling method worked at Phu Kham because the lithology and weathering has an intuitive and observable controlling influence on SAG mill throughput. Bendigo Mining Limited has established a modern underground gold mine and processing plant at Bendigo in central Victoria. The Bendigo goldfield produced around 22 000 000 oz of gold between 1851 and 1954. Approximately 4 000 000 oz were sourced from surface alluvial workings with the remaining 18 000 000 oz won from underground quartz reefs. The modern mine is accessed via the Swan Decline, which commences at the Kangaroo Flat site on the southern outskirts of Bendigo and progresses in a north easterly direction between the Deborah and Sheepshead anticlines, reaching a depth of almost 1000 m below the City of Bendigo. Development of this decline commenced in 1998. Since that time 20 km of underground development has been completed. Exploration drilling, on-reef development and bulk sampling carried out between 1999 and 2005 resulted in the estimation of a Probable Ore Reserve of 700 000 tonnes at 9.0 g/t gold for 207 000 oz of gold. These Ore Reserves were contained within four reefs located on the Deborah and Sheepshead anticlines. Reef mining commenced in late 2005 from the Shywolup and Greater Garrard reefs. Material mined was stockpiled on the surface in preparation for commissioning of the process plant which commenced in mid 2006. Mining and processing were carried out between August 2006 and May 2007 during which time 176 000 tonnes were processed at an average grade of 5.4 g/t gold to produce 26 735 oz of gold. Plant feed was sourced from four reefs. This paper discusses some of the issues which were encountered with the definition and mining of these geologically variable and nuggetty reefs. This paper covers exploration techniques, grade estimation, mine geological control, mining methods, geotechnical issues and reconciliations. It will also discuss some of the lessons learnt and how these will be applied to future Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimation, as well as underground operations.

Maximising margins in today's competitive international commodity markets demands superior productivity. This requires more than simply selecting the best equipment. It requires efficient production and commercial processes together with management systems recognised as international best practice. This paper introduces an integrated way of working that includes management systems for successfully changing work practices and attitudes, developing managers and increasing accountability. It provides an improvement methodology that includes systematic involvement of people in true continuous improvement of processes for maximising productivity and safety while minimising costs. Even though the principles are proven in all industry sectors worldwide, they are not always used correctly. This paper provides examples of traditional performance measurement systems to show how managers miss opportunities to control and improve both production and supporting service processes. It also describes the basic methodology for correct use of the principles and provides examples of correct implementation of modem systems in mining. The charts from actual mining case studies will be elaborated upon in the conference presentation. This paper's main aim is to provide background material for the presentation by introducing integrated principles for building best practice management systems for superior productivity and safety - for higher margins.

Although the Mt Charlotte gold resource was discovered in 1893, it was only in 1954 that geologists correctly interpreted drill data and defined a large low-grade orebody. The mine has been a large, low-cost and profitable producer since 1962 when bulk mining commenced using cut and fill. From 1968 a combination of long hole open stoping with delayed mass blasting was used. This proved to be an excellent mining method for the large, separate subvertical orebodies. The structured but otherwise good quality rock allowed very large stopes to stand unsupported. Exceptionally large equipment, for its time, was used to efficiently mine, muck and move the ore at low-cost. The mine only just survived severe cost pressures in 1974-76, due to very low gold prices. Better gold prices in 1979 and a need to access deeper ore meant a bold commitment to sink the Cassidy Shaft and refurbish the mine to sustain future profitability. In 1997 the Sam Pearce Decline connected to the underground workings, making it profitable to mine upper level remnant ore. Mining-induced seismicity has been a feature of mining at Mt Charlotte. The main cause has been shearing on structures. A mine-wide seismic system was installed in 1994. Large seismic events have occasionally made management question whether a safe working environment can be maintained. Thorough investigations led to an understanding of the problem and development of procedures to minimise seismicity.

The acid mine drainage (AMD) situation at three opencast collieries in the Witbank Coalfield, South Africa, was evaluated from different perspectives. Twenty-seven test pits were dug into the spoils of these collieries to characterise the in situ conditions of spoils of varying age. Detailed static testing was done on surrounding drill holes and additional samples were taken from the test pits. Selected samples were tested using different techniques, namely ABA, mineralogy and kinetic tests. Groundwater monitoring boreholes from the areas surrounding these spoils were also used for characterisation. The ABA results compared favourably with the in situ determinations; acidic test pits proved to be potentially acid-generating from ABA, even when the samples had neutral paste pH. Kinetic test results showed these samples to yield low pH leachate over the test period. In several of these results, the theoretical depletion of neutralising potential and the onset of acidity were well matched. NAG pH-values and final observed water chemistry corresponded for the cells predicted by ABA to acidify, but compared poorly in cells that did not acidify. Results from the non-acidic spoils were consistent with the in situ observations. Alternative kinetic test methodologies were also employed. Duplicate samples were tested in humidity cells and in aerated trays that were manually wetted on a regular basis. Results from these tests showed an excellent correlation. Detailed mineralogical determinations using XRD and XRF were used for comparison to the ABA and, in some cases, humidity cell results. These comparisons show that the ABA results are consistent with the results expected from the mineralogy. The conclusion from these assessments is that ABA, in most cases, provides information that can be correlated to the field, mineralogy and to humidity cells. The use of multiple techniques leads to a higher degree of confidence in the use of the data.

The commonly accepted genetic theories of Pilbara iron ores and Woodie Woodie manganese ores have often presented them as quite unique. This apparent uniqueness is not confined to just iron and manganese, but is also seen in gold and copper deposits in Western Australia. The published material on iron and manganese ores would seem to have either a quite complicated genesis or none at all. An alternate theory for the origin of these deposits is presented which involves a protore with simple oxidation and pH controls with hydrothermal fluid sources from the diagenesis and dewatering of the underlying strata. This theory explains the distribution, thinning, cold dolerites and very high concentrations of deleterious minerals observed in these deposits. This genesis system is also related to the systems that deposit hydrothermal gold and copper in sediments in the region.This paper presents the author’s observations, sampling and mapping after several decades studying and exploring for the minerals in Australia and locations overseas. All of these theories were developed with (or in spite of!) the guidance of Mal Kneeshaw, but would never have seen the light of day without him and the others presenting here. It is not what I would call scientifically polished, and possibly deserves more detailed studies; it is, however, presented as a discussion paper.CITATION:Schwann, P B, 2015.
