AGL is one of Australia’s leading integrated energy companies and the largest ASX listed owner, operator and developer of renewable energy and thermal generation in the country. AGL owns and operates the 2210 MW Loy Yang A power station and adjacent 30 Mt/a brown coalmine in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria. In addition to GHD’s global footprint, the company also has a significant Victorian presence, including a permanent, well-resourced regional office in Traralgon, approximately 10 km from Loy Yang, as well as a permanent site office.A joint paper on the Loy Yang mine professional services alliance model was written for the AusIMM International Mine Management Conference in 2006 by Woods and Wood. Now ten years on, this paper provides an overview of the present relationship and arrangements, including the continued transformation of the alliance model and maturing of the relationship contract.These are challenging times, with increasing cost and regulatory pressure driving change in the broader energy and resources industry, and locally including both the mining and power sectors at Loy Yang. Flexible models to achieve a balance between internal personnel and access to key external skills, whilst achieving value for money and transparency, is increasingly critical. The right drivers and performance measures are essential, particularly when confronted with potential major technical and environmental risks (considering significant ground failure and fire events that have occurred elsewhere within the Latrobe Valley over the last decade) within a sector that is reducing costs and optimising production.This case study discusses the alliance status and changes, reasons behind adjustments and what the future is likely to hold. The paper also explores the validity of the original objectives and the extent to which they have been achieved. The philosophy of the alliance is to continue closely aligning the objectives of the two companies in the best interests of the Loy Yang site and immediate surrounds/stakeholders. This paper addresses critical environmental, health, regulatory and scientific concerns related to gold mining activities in the specific area of Barberton, Mpumalanga, South Africa. The paper thus calls for informed decisions to be made by the authorities to safeguard both the environment and people’s health. The novelty of this study is based on its comprehensive nature of the simultaneous assessment of both cyanide and potential toxic elements (PTEs) in tailings, while taking into account their composition variability over time. By combining these aspects, it is then possible to provide a holistic understanding of the contamination risks associated with mining tailings and thus justify the need for regular monitoring and supervision to ensure compliance against regulatory limits. Additionally, this paper considered investigating the dynamic nature of tailings, which are subject to changes in their chemical composition due to exposure to weathering by various agents. In this study, the determination of weak acid dissociable (WAD) and free cyanide in tailings was performed using a validated method employing the South African Council for Mineral Technology (MINTEK) Laboratory Cynoprobe. The PTEs in tailings were determined by an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). The results revealed that the tailings contained primarily substantial amounts of PTEs, including Fe (87 566 to 37 800 mg/L), Cu (271 to 110 mg/L), Mn (2100 to 680 mg/L), Ni (400 to 390 mg/L), Zn (180 to 68 mg/L), Cr (645 to 510 mg/L), As (450 to 128 mg/L), and Pb (up to 35 mg/L). The cyanide concentrations in tailings varied between 0.20 mg/L and 0.26 mg/L for free CN (with a mean of 0.23 mg/L in water leaching), 0.23 mg/L to 0.28 mg/L for free CN (with a mean of 0.25 mg/L in alkali leaching), 0.24 mg/L to 0.35 mg/L for WAD CN (with a mean of 0.28 mg/L in water leaching), and 0.31 mg/L to 0.39 mg/L for WAD CN (with a mean of 0.35 mg/L in alkali leaching). The measured concentration of cyanide and the PTEs was compared to the minimum permissible levels enforced by the South African Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) and the Water Research Commission (WRC) regulations that govern the disposal of hazardous constituents into the environment. Additionally, it was observed that the concentrations of contaminants in the tailings exceeded the acceptable minimum limits for hazardous waste exposure, posing risks to the environment and human health.

Most mine ventilation engineers are involved in ventilation planning and design in some capacity. Ventilation modelling software used by a competent experienced ventilation engineer is extremely useful in developing good ventilation designs by allowing assessment of a wide range of potential options. Unfortunately, ventilation modelling undertaken by persons who do not have sufficient experience or knowledge usually results in a façade that covers up a fundamentally unsatisfactory design. Ventilation models are produced for a wide variety of purposes including: fault-finding of a problem area in a mine and options analysis for resolution of such problems; a complete review or optimisation exercise of an entire mine’s ventilation system; or a much longer life-of-mine type of study. Models can be intended as the basis for studies with diverse purposes such as primary shaft or airway sizing, primary fan specification, examining re-entry times after blasting, resolving leakage or recirculation, or investigating the impact of fires or underground climate or cooling requirements. The concepts of ‘materiality’ and ‘fitness for purpose’ are essential to developing or using a ventilation model and serious mistakes have been made in wrongly using a ventilation model for purposes for which it was never intended, often because it is simply the most recent model on the mine site. Mistakes at this level often translate into faulty ventilation strategies and inefficient or ineffective use of scarce capital for ventilation projects. Validating a ventilation model is a time-consuming and expensive process and not every model must (or even should) be fully validated to meet the objectives at that time. This paper discusses the application of quality assurance in ventilation planning with particular respect to the ‘basis of design’ (BOD) as well as the standards for validating a ventilation model. It also provides a recommended way of dealing with non-conformances in measured versus modelled values of critical parameters in the model.CITATION:Brake, D J, 2015. During a period of twelve months between FY18-19, a series of trials were conducted to compare production drilling accuracy using two different methodologies, and the subsequent impact this had on stope performance (dilution and recovery). Testing was conducted at a series of underground mines in Australia. The drill rig’s existing alignment processes were compared to a new technology system, with the following observations: • The new technology was proven to limit rig alignment error, thereby reducing average blasthole deviation, resulting in an increase in the number of holes drilled within tolerance by up to 160%. • The increased accuracy reduced stope dilution significantly by reducing over-break of subgrade ore, whilst also increasing drilled meters (faster stope-cycle time), reducing the bridged tonnes ratio, and facilitating the capture of previously uneconomical stopes. A cost-benefit analysis extrapolated from each of the trials showed the extent to which the new technology, when applied to production data, reduced average dilution, increased ore recovery as well as general drill and blast productivity. In one such trial, the new technology was proven to have reduced average dilution by net 45.4%, which if applied to a full year’s production data, would result in AUD8.2M additional ore recovered, with AUD4.5M less spent on wasted cost of haulage and processing of diluted ore. As a result, return per tonne would increase 22%, from AUD87 to AUD106. This improvement was maintained over the following 12 months – reducing average dilution from 22% in FY17 to 12.1% in FY19.

In this paper current net present value (NPV) based mine valuation techniques that take into account market and private risk are discussed and analysed. Potential pitfalls that arise from the application of a portfolio, market or commodity based risk metric to a mining project are identified. An alternative non-simulative framework for quantifying and factoring market and private risk in NPV calculations is proposed and then applied to a hypothetical case study in an attempt to overcome identified pitfalls. Mathematical proof that a static discounted cash flow (DCF) calculation can underestimate or overestimate mine NPV is presented, the conditions for each are outlined and the degree of underestimation defined.CITATION:Dube, T Y, 2012. Obuasi Mine in Ghana, with more than 100 years of mining history, developed from a surface operation into a deep >2000 m underground gold mine. The challenge is to extract value from narrow veins left after extensive mining in the wider ore zones of the mine. Since the merger of AngloGold and Ashanti Goldfields in 2004 the mine strives to achieve optimum extraction through an integrated Mineral Resource management process from geological modelling, resource evaluation to mine design and scheduling. The shear hosted gold deposit displays complex secondary shears of variable thickness and continuity. There is an ongoing process of changes taking place in the way that geological modelling and resource estimation is done. Recent developments include the use of computerised systems that support the whole resource management chain from resource modelling to reserve optimisation. The change in thought and technology now allows for targeting narrow veins previously ignored in optimisation and mine design since moving into mechanised mining. The increased knowledge and confidence in the resource models now allows for flexibility in mine design, selection of mining method and scheduling and extraction of the reserves. The focus area for change is the way the orebody is evaluated and extraction designed. Since 2005 major changes were made to the process. This paper considers the historical approach of resource management. It looks at the individual process changes and qualifying the way ahead.

It is recognised by the major international codes that resource classification involves the interaction of numerous qualitative and quantitative criteria such as data quality, geological and grade continuity, etc. However, the difficulty in quantifying the degree of uncertainty associated with mineral resources estimation has led to the creation of a large suite of methodologies, terms and definitions, with almost every mining company having its own set of standards. It is also intuitively known that several traditionally used methods to evaluate resources do not take into account the spatial continuity of the grades, being unable to provide a reliable measure of the error associated with their estimates. Since they do not provide an error assessment, these methods are inappropriate to assess local or global uncertainty associated with an estimate. Faced with these problems, this work aims at developing a methodology for either quantitative or qualitative analysis of mineral resources estimation, through incorporation of uncertainty and the correct definition of the associated risk or error. The proposed methodology includes the development of a software code incorporating all the main classification techniques used by the mineral industry. A comprehensive study about each technique was conducted allowing a comparison of the parameters affecting mineral inventory assessment. A case study was conducted with a typical iron ore deposit data set from the Conceitpo mine of the Itabira Complex in the Iron Quadrangle, Brazil. The results showed the specific limitations of each classification system and the influence in selecting their key parameters, always based on subjective choices.

Development of a global failure criterion for rocks has been a desired goal in rock mechanics. Due to variations in factors affecting rock specifications and their mechanical properties, proposing a single failure criterion suitable for all rock types has proven to be unachievable. The theoretical failure criteria do not fit the real data correctly. Amongst empirical criteria, the Bieniawski criterion has demonstrated an acceptable agreement with laboratory generated data. It has been experienced that the ability to estimate rock strength via the modified form of this criterion is significantly improved. Based on the modified Bieniawski criterion and using VB.net, an associated Microsoft Windows program named 'RAMOCE' has been developed. The inputs of RAMOCE can be triaxial compressive strength data, Bieniawski parameters of a specific rock or the type of given rock. Based on input data, potential outputs of the program are Bieniawski's rock parameters, sensitivity analysis of the effective parameters, rock failure prediction and defining the type of given rock.

Pyrite depression with prolonged pre-conditioning treatment in high salinity water has attracted much of researchers’ interest in recent years considering the increased utilisation of multiple stage flotation, closed water circuits, clay minerals, and sea water in flotation plants. In this study, the role of calcium (Ca)/magnesium (Mg) precipitates in stabilising the dissociative ferric hydroxy-xanthate (FHX), and its effect on modifying the balance of hydrophobic/hydrophilic species on the pyrite surface were primarily investigated. The total amount of extractable Fe-bearing species on pyrite concentrates and tailings after floatability test was quantitively determined using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) extraction tests combined with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). A more evident accumulation of extracted-Fe in pyrite concentrates rather than it in pyrite tailings was observed at both pH 9 and 10.5 when pyrite was pre-conditioned in Ca/Mg-bearing solutions for 360 min. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed the main xanthate derivatives changed from di-xanthogen (1155 cm-1 ) to FHX (1167 cm-1 ) on the oxidised pyrite samples that were preconditioned in Ca/Mg-bearing solutions. Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS) suggested the preferential accumulation of FHX upon secondary Ca/Mg-bearing precipitates as reflected by the higher Fe/S ratio together with the decrease of O element herein after xanthate conditioning. Although the hydrophilic secondary Ca/Mg/Fe-bearing minerals on the pyrite surface generally deteriorate pyrite’s floatability, the upper section of these secondary hydrophilic aggregates is partially covered by FHX alongside with further multilayer-adsorbed di-xanthogen. The precipitated Ca/Mg-bearing precipitates promotes the immobilisation of dissociated FHX derived from the reaction among iron oxyhydroxides and xanthate anions upon the localised secondary Ca/Mg/Fe-bearing minerals via acid–base complexation. Therefore, this phenomenon alleviates the hydrophilic modification of secondary Ca/Mg/Fe-bearing minerals to pyrite considering the immobilised FHX upon localised precipitates shows a slight hydrophobicity, and meanwhile, the upper FHX benefits the multilayer adsorption of di-xanthogen via the interaction among their inner hydrophobic alkyl chains.

The trend of global copper production has prospectively increased over time. Based on typical mined ore grades, 1 t of copper ore generates approximately 6–10 kg of copper, which requires much energy, usually in the form of metallurgical coke. Copper production using carbon as a fuel and reductant contributes up to 0.3 per cent to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As a result, research into decarbonisation processes applicable to reducing low-grade copper sulfide ores, copper oxides, electronic wastes and other alternative complex Cu-rich materials has increased. Alternative fuels for reducing carbon-rich emissions in pyrometallurgical copper processing include methane, ammonia, biomass, solar and wind power, but in recent times increased focus has been on hydrogen as a potential fuel and reducing agent for materials such as oxidised copper scrap, Cu2O/CuO and Cu-rich slags/e-wastes. From a thermodynamic perspective, hydrogen exhibits a significantly more negative standard Gibbs free energy (ΔG°) than copper oxide making it a suitable reductant and the exothermic thermal effect from reaction between hydrogen and Cu2O/CuO may be used to control process parameters. These characteristics renders hydrogen an ideal gas for reducing copper oxides and copper-containing slags/e-wastes. This review article assesses previous research on utilising hydrogen for producing and refining copper from primary and secondary feed materials.

Ground subsidence due to mining is a common dilemma confronting the underground coal mining industry. The effects of underground longwall mining on river valleys have come under scrutiny, especially when mining is located underneath catchment areas. As public awareness of mining impacts on the environment increases, there is the need to develop damage mitigation strategies. Results of numerical modelling show that river valley response to underground longwall mining can be simulated and evaluated.

The Kucing Liar skarn deposit is located in the Ertsberg mining district, which also contains other skarn deposits and the Grasberg porphyry copper û gold deposit. The Ertsberg district is located in the province of Irian Jaya, IndonesiaÆs easternmost province. Mining development began in the Ertsberg district in 1972 with the mining of the Ertsberg deposit. Daily production in the district now averages about 230 000 tonnes of ore, with the bulk of the ore coming from the Grasberg open pit and the balance from underground mining of skarn deposits. During 1998, 45 218 additional metres of drilling were conducted to delineate and understand the Kucing Liar orebody. The deposit was first intersected in drill holes in 1994 and then was intersected in underground workings located about 1000 metres from the discovery drill hole in 1995. Initially, the two intersections were thought to be different orebodies but are now realised to be different parts of the same orebody. The Kucing Liar deposit consists of magnetite û copper û gold replacement and skarn mineralisation in favorable Tertiary and Cretaceous units. The deposit is approximately 2000 metres in length and averages about 200 to 250 metres in thickness. The width varies from 400 to 600 metres. Drilling in 1998 was directed towards delineating the deposit on its NW and SE ends and to determine its down dip extension. Reserves for the deposit at the end of 1998 stand at 320 million tonnes at 1.4 per cent copper, 1.4 g/t gold, and 5.3 g/t silver. Many important questions remain to be answered concerning the relationship of the Kucing Liar orebody to the major faults in the district and to the Grasberg intrusive complex which contains the Grasberg orebody. Continued exciting developments are anticipated as work to understand the deposit by drilling and geologic study continues.

Mining companies are moving towards automated haul trucks and other equipment. One reason for this is that if automated trucks can operate in a standard pattern over and over again without variation, then human error is reduced, if not eliminated.The challenge for mining production leaders/managers is to ensure operators follow standard operating procedures for load and dump operations, with each operator doing the same thing, every time. However, operators are only human and inconsistent performance is rife at every mine site. The finger may be pointed at the operators for not doing as instructed. The clarity and variability of trainer instructions may be considered causal to the problem. Herein lies the problem. Almost all operators believe they are following the procedure very closely; moreover, they all demonstrate a strong desire to conform to instruction.Using video analysis and feedback, each operator can be shown where and by how much they differ from the benchmark set by their company. Operators, often for the first time, can see definitively what they are doing, compared to industry best practice.The technology utilised by real-time video (RTV) crews measures time, distance and angles. It can overlay the video of the operator at the load site, with video of the perfect pass. Operators are amazed when they see how near to, or how far they are from best practice.The footage and data gathered by RTV assists operators in understanding exactly what adjustments are required to increase proficiency. It also assists load and dump superintendents to identify where in the process they are losing time. The smelter building at Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex, Iran, houses two reverberatory furnaces and five Pierce-Smith converters. Under normal operating conditions SO2 emissions fill the building, posing a major health problem for all workers in the building, and reducing their ability to maintain the plant. The converter fume extraction system was analysed using plant measurements, engineering modelling of the entire system and CFD modelling of the extraction hoods. By applying fundamental engineering concepts, a user-interactive computer program was developed that enabled plant engineers and operators to gain a detailed understanding of the system. In conjunction with plant measurements, the model quantified the amount of inleakage throughout the system, identifying it as a significant contributor to the poor extraction performance. Furthermore, it enabled investigation of the effects of hood gates, converters on line, hood dampers, flue insulation, electrostatic precipitator (ESP) operation, and inclusion of an acid plant. The model gave unprecedented insight into the operation of a counterintuitive buoyancy-driven extraction system.

From 2002 to 2006, longwall mining was undertaken directly beneath the Cataract Tunnel, which is a 100-year-old, heritage-listed tunnel in Hawkesbury Sandstone responsible for delivering 20 per cent of Sydney’s annual water supply. At one location, undermining resulted in movement of at least 350 mm along a known fault that transects the tunnel. During this movement, the continued operation of the tunnel was ensured through a careful system of planning, monitoring and management.Of key importance to the success of the operation was the use of advanced numerical modelling to guide operations at all levels, including feasibility assessment, pre-mine mitigation works, monitoring design, operation performance and post-mining condition. This allowed many aspects of the potential impacts to be explored, including joint movements, rock mass deformations and changes in permeability. A key challenge was to successfully model near-field influences on adverse geological structure due to very far-field effects. This paper explains the model’s conceptual development, calibration, performance and limitations.Modelling provided the confidence to manage the impacts of large mining-induced movement on key infrastructure and ultimately predicted fault movement accurately. Cerro Vanguardia SA (CVSA), property of AngloGold Ashanti, mines gold and silver from a system of vetiforme orebodies located in the south of the Argentine Patagonia, in the Province of Santa Cruz.Surface mining techniques are applied to develop a series of narrow pits with an average waste to ore ratio of 26:1. This quite unique constraint brings into focus the need to maximise inter-ramp and final wall angles, leading to a strong need to optimise wall control drilling and blasting in order to reduce back-break damage to an absolute minimum.The paper describes a program of applied investigation and design modification implemented during?2008?and?2009 in?two?separate pits of Cerro Vanguardia. Three distinct yet complementary damage mechanisms were identified and observed during the field components of the work; vibration induced strain fracturing, surface cratering around blasthole collars and quasi-static loading and unloading of the surrounding rock mass as a consequence of poorly controlled confinement.With these mechanisms identified, a measurement, modelling and modification campaign was conducted in order to reduce the incidence of each source of damage. Interactive design analysis and modelling, near-field vibration measurement, video capture and the application of electronic initiation technology were supported by seed wave modelling and topographic evaluation of the achieved results.Results point to the usefulness of simulation techniques for determining optimum delay timing to reduce vibration impact, while the visualisation of explosive energy distribution produced by drilling and explosive loading decisions assists in reducing the probability of over-confinement.This paper presents relevant aspects of the two fieldwork campaigns:1) describing the application of the techniques, and2) summarising the results obtained.

In Europe, a major interest in the infrastructure and tunnelling fields is in the new crossings of Alps in the form of base tunnels, which are important components of the high-speed (for passengers)/high-capacity (for freight) Trans European railway corridors. These tunnels cross the mountain belt at the elevation of the main cities and basins located all around the Alps and are longer (up to 57 km) and deeper (up to 2500 m) than all tunnels constructed in the centuries before. The excavation of the first Alpine railway and road traffi c tunnels could in general be carried out successfully by conventional excavation methods. With the great lengths of the new base tunnels, mechanised excavation by using tunnel boring machines (TBMs) is imperative as it contributes significantly to savings in construction time and costs. Questions are however posed on the adoption of such a systematic tunnel construction method given the severe ground conditions which are some time anticipated along the tunnel alignment, with possible major geological hazards such as water inflow in heterogeneous fractured or karstifi ed rock masses, stress-induced tensile failure of hard rocks, and plastic shear failure and squeezing of weak rocks, etc. This lecture is to briefly review the current state-of-the-art in the understanding and modelling of two such critical hazards as spalling/bursting and squeezing ground behaviour. With the present interest in the design of mechanised tunnelling with TBMs in such conditions, the complex interaction between the rock mass, the tunnel machine and its system components, and the tunnel support is studied in detail by numerical modelling. The research and development efforts presently underway with the intention to provide the designer with a novel three-dimensional (3D) simulator of mechanised tunnel excavation are presented. Case examples are discussed with reference to the Lyon-Turin Base Tunnel design.

In the year 1926, Edie Creek, in the Morobe District of the Mandated Territory of New Guinea, saw the greatest gold rush of recent years. Situated 35 miles inland from the coast, and at an altitude of over 6000 feet, Edie Creek presented to the original prospectors a wet, jungle-clad uninhabited, and inhospitable region. There were no roads; and the only means of approach from the equally inhospitable coast was by an eight to ten days' tramp through coastal swamps and gorge-scarred mountains. All food supplies and equipment had to be carried on the backs of "kanakas," and in many cases through country occupied by hostile natives.Since the first discovery of payable gold at Edie Creek, mining on the Morobe Goldfield has shown remarkable progress, and in spite of the tremendous natural difficulties, the field today ranks as one of the most important in Australasia.Aeroplanes, more than any other factor, have been responsible for this rapid development. They provide the only means of transport from the coast, and at present serve the needs of over 600 Europeans and 3000 indentured native labourers engaged in the industry.

Australia has seen unprecedented demand for coal exports in the last ten years and this demand is set to expand further still according to many analysts. This rapid increase in demand has placed pressure on multi-user coal chains to guarantee the capability to meet the required demand, in terms of both current operations and capacity expansion.The projects required to deliver these forecast tonnages take place in an increasingly complex commercial and technical environment. These challenges include brownfield and greenfield projects, multiple rail and terminal service providers as well as a myriad of mine operators, all needing to operate in an increasingly integrated manner to get the most out of expensive shared assets.Increasing complexity and integration drives the need for more holistic and sophisticated analysis tools. The capacity of coal chain subsystems, such as mine, rail and port, can no longer be determined effectively in isolation. Understanding the nature of the interactions between these subsystems and the resultant capacity of the integrated system is the key to maximising value. TSG advocates the use of a total integrated system approach to understand the behaviour and performance of complex coal chains.Recently, TSG has worked in conjunction with the Integrated Logistics Company and a number of stakeholders in the Dalrymple Bay Coal Chain to deliver the first independent system master plan. This master plan has provided a quantitative and rational assessment of coal chain capacity in its current state and a prediction of its capacity once a pipeline of committed capacity improvements is in place. It is underpinned by a highly detailed discrete-event simulation model of the complete coal chain as an integrated system, including mine load-outs, rail, terminal and port operations.This paper provides an overview of the study and describes the differences between subsystem and total integrated system model performance.
