Rotary kilns have been in service in the gold industry to regenerate carbon for 65 years. At the time oxide ores with gold head grades of 8 to 10 g/t were being treated. Carbon could be regenerated adequately at 650°C and solution losses were less than 1%. Forty years ago, research indicated that heavily fouled carbon from flotation circuits had to be held at 750 to 850°C for ten to twenty minutes for full reactivation (Avraamides and La Brooy, 1987), gold head grades were typically 5 g/t and solution losses typically 0.02 ppm – still less than 1%. In 2017 it was determined (Claflin et al., 2017) that a residence time of less than 1 minute at 750°C can be adequate to reactivate carbon fouled with organics sufficiently to achieve 0.005 ppm solution losses in a flotation tailings leach plant.With the potential for discovery head grades to drop below 0.6 g/t, solution losses of 0.02 ppm represent over 3% loss. Tight operation of the whole carbon circuit is required to keep gold solution losses below 1% going forward.There are alternatives to a rotary carbon kiln, e.g. vertical kilns of which the Minfurn, Rintoul and Combustion Air kilns are examples. The alternative kilns can be heated using electrical heating elements, induction, and microwave. These kilns can operate successfully under the right conditions, however, they are almost exclusively for small carbon throughputs and are not suitable for the large carbon advance rates that are required to process low head grade ore deposits. Large throughput carbon kilns are are almost exclusively fossil fuel fired rotary kilns and the subject of this paper. In the view of the principal author, a fossil fuel fired vertical carbon kiln is preferred to a rotary kiln, however, it is not currently used in the industry.Thermal regeneration of activated carbon has a major impact on gold recovery in the carbon circuit. The carbon kiln and associated equipment constitute 3 to 5% of the capital cost for an oxide processing plant and up to 10% of the capital cost if flotation tails are leached. Despite the capital cost and impact on recovery, the carbon kiln is often poorly selected, operated and maintained.Six years ago Ausenco embarked on the Carbon Kiln Initiative to reduce solution gold losses. This body of knowledge has been published in a series of papers culminating in this paper on how to:1. Select a kiln appropriate for the flowsheet;2. During 2009 the technical services staff at Barrick Gold Corporation's Australian Business Unit conducted a review of their five underground mines that utilise pastefill as the backfill component for these operations. Of the five mines reviewed three use dry tailings and two use wet tailings plants. The primary aim for these reviews was to determine whether pastefill was the right option to be used, and if not, what where the alternatives. The reviews undertaken focus on several areas including, paste plant operation, reticulation and barricade techniques, the geotechnical requirements for pastefill in regards to the current mining methods, the consideration of alternative methods, capital and operating cost histories compared to initial estimates, and a cost benefit analysis of pastefill against other mining methods. The main benefits from the use of pastefill is increasing the extraction of the resource, reducing or eliminating the need to leave pillars. In some mines the use of pastefill is geotechnically driven, to manage high stress environments or mining induced seismicity. A third benefit of using pastefill in some circumstances is that it reduces dilution, however it is considered that this is not a valid argument for most of the mines reviewed. At two mines no alternative to pastefill was determined, whilst differing extraction and filling strategies were potentially identified at the other three mines. The reviews developed cost benefit curves for those sites that had alternative mining methods to assist in determining whether pastefill is the right option to use for any particular stope. At the grades typically mined in each operation, pastefill was the preferred option to use. In all mines, pastefill was determined to be the best option at this time.

The underground metalliferous mining industry continues to change under the influence of many factors including, to name a few, new mining techniques and equipment, new approaches to risk management, more stringent safety and health standards, new employment practices and orebodies become deeper and often lower grade. In addition, the same technological revolution and plummeting cost of technology that has brought the GPS, smart phones and digital cameras to the general population is also working its way through the mining industry impacting on communications, automation and process control as well as introducing major efficiency and productivity dividends. However, not all factors are positive including, in particular, the issues of carbon costs and electrical power. This paper explores some of the trends affecting ventilation in hard rock mines, some of the existing and likely future challenges and some of the potential future solutions to these issues.CITATION:Brake, D J, 2013. Nuggety gold-quartz reefs are characterised by localised, high-grades and in many cases coarse free-gold. Geometrical and grade complexities are often observed. The high-grade regions are generally erratic and have a low continuity; though may make the deposit economic. Viable grades are generally contained within discrete oreshoots, which are surrounded by barren/low-grade material. Drilling is an effective measure of geological continuity, however grade distribution can only be reliably obtained from underground development and bulk sampling. In general terms, only an inferred resource is likely to be estimated from surface drill data alone. Underground development, further drilling and probably bulk sampling will be required to delineate inferred and indicated resources. Closely spaced development with bulk sampling is likely to be the best way to determine a probable reserve. The resource evaluation process must driven by a clear geological model that should attempt to understand the controls to reef geometry and grade distribution. Geological interpretation has traditionally been undertaken in two-dimensions, though computer software is now being used to produce three-dimensional models. Grade interpolation has generally been undertaken using classical methods, typically weighted averages, zone of influence weighting and polygonal/sectional blocks. Tonnages can generally be calculated from diamond drill and development information with a reasonable degree of confidence. Grade is much more difficult to define with confidence because of its highly erratic and discontinuous nature. To account for variability it is recommended that a best estimate be reported within a grade range, as this more accurately reflects the uncertainties involved. Reporting should be undertaken within the framework of the JORC code, but should involve special consideration of grade reliability.

The MMG Century mine, which is the largest zinc/lead mine in Australia, began operating in 1999 and ceased mining from the open pit in July 2015, with processing completed in early 2016. Closure plans were developed from 2006, and detailed planning for closure commenced in early 2011 with the appointment of a dedicated closure planning resource. The site will continue to be managed during the active and passive closure phases to complete rehabilitation commitments and demonstrate that closure completion criteria have been achieved.Completion of the mining/processing phase of the project provides an opportunity to reflect on successes, missed opportunities and lessons learnt with respect to planning and execution of mine closure. This paper highlights examples of success at Century and also identifies key learnings and areas for improvement in progressive closure outcomes. Specific examples examine mine planning and execution involving bulk movement of waste rock and construction of permanent waste encapsulation landforms. The paper also provides recommendations for other sites that are planning for closure.Decisions made during the operational phase of the project life can result in a significant increase in closure liability and reduce the likelihood of achieving lease relinquishment. In the face of increasing energy costs, limited water resources, more stringent legislation, and lower feed grades, the mining industry is searching for more sustainable technologies and practices. Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) is undertaking a research project, ‘improving the resource and eco-efficiency of mining operations’, to help the industry meet these challenges. The project is investigating alternatives in mining and processing that reduce energy and water consumption, minimise emissions and waste, and maximise the value recovered from the deposit. The targets are to reduce energy usage by more than 30 per cent and greenhouse gas emissions by more than 50 per cent compared to current practice.Key areas of interest were identified across mining and processing operations. These were grouped into the following interrelated work areas for investigation: high intensity selective blasting, in-pit crushing and conveying, preconcentration, energy efficient comminution circuits and technologies, coarse particle flotation, and water recovery optimisation. Investigations have included reviews of industrial data, modelling, simulation, and laboratory and pilot scale trials. In some areas industrial scale trials will commence shortly. This paper discusses the investigations and key findings from the project so far; highlighting the possibilities for reducing energy consumption, water usage and carbon emissions. A particular mining process may incorporate any combination of the alternatives identified and requires tailored solutions based on a detailed understanding of the ore deposit, the process and local conditions. The focus is on improving resource efficiency; creating more value with less impact and consequently a better economic return from the available resource. Longwall mining is a form of underground mining and the principal extraction method for underground coal mining in Australia. The method is used in the mining of both thermal and metallurgical coal. The primary market for thermal longwall mines is that of the export market where price is governed against the Newcastle Thermal Benchmark index (globalCOAL, 2016).Australia’s thermal coal export outlook is considered moderate due to slower demand from major importing countries, as well as slowing domestic production. However, ‘Australia is projected to increase its share of world thermal coal exports and become the world’s largest exporter over the medium term as lower prices, increased domestic use and infrastructure constraints limit growth from other key suppliers’ (Office of the Chief Economist (OCE), 2016, pp 25, 58). On the contrary, and as a result of current global coal price trends, the basic economic principles of underground longwall coal mining are heavily stressed. From a life-of-mine perspective, influencing return on investment is at its greatest during project evaluation and execution. Production scheduling of open pit mining is a key area as it deals with the management of operating cash flows of mining companies. The efficiency of long-term schedules is usually assessed with economic criteria such as net present value (NPV), discounted cash flow rate of return (DCFROR) and payback period, which are not sufficient on their own for revealing the complex picture of the decision-making process.This paper offers a thorough analysis of the most important contemporary criteria of long-term production scheduling, as way to provide the mining practice with a new approach to the decision-making process. The list of criteria includes technological, economic and probabilistic ones. A detailed case study is provided aiming to illustrate the applicability of the criteria for comparing the scheduling approaches regarding the economic interests of a mineÆs owner and contractor. The results obtained can be used for revealing new trends in the current methodology of open-pit production scheduling optimisations.

Societal expectations about how the industry operates and treats its people will be a key driver in the development of the Australian mining industry over the next 20 - 30 years (Moffat, Mason and Littleboy, 2009). Understanding these expectations will be critical in maintaining what much of the minerals industry calls its 'social licence to operate', or its public acceptance or approval. Yet what constitutes this social licence is poorly articulated, with little published research exploring the concept at a local operational level or at the national level in Australia or internationally. This research aimed to explore the societal expectations of the mining industry in Australia and test a participatory methodology to articulate them. Three workshops were conducted with a sample of 24 members of the 'Australian voting public' to explore community objectives for the onshore exploration and mining industry, and the underlying expectations for how the industry should operate in the future. Qualitative analysis of this data revealed three overarching objectives for the onshore mining industry held by participants. They thought that the industry should: advance Australia's national interests (including social well-being); minimise environmental impact, and; act in a socially responsible manner. Within each of these three key themes, or objectives, a number of tensions were evident in the views of participants regarding the trade-offs they are willing to make to secure economic benefit from mining, as well as the basic conditions for socially acceptable mining. These data provide an insight into the conditions for a national social licence in Australia for the mining industry, and the means for its realisation.

Rock breakage is a major component of all mining and mineral processing operations with the particle size distribution linked to productivity through the comminution chain. Optimisation and automatic control of comminution, material handling, and agglomeration processes is a complex task with large potential for gains in productivity, and energy efficiency. A key factor in realising these gains is the requirement for fully-automated online particle size distribution measurement to provide the necessary feedback and input for control. Moreover, to enable automatic control system it is necessary to provide a consistent, reliable size distribution measurement that avoids the significant errors resulting from under-sizing overlapped particles and over-sizing clusters of fine particles. Published literature and observation of commercial systems indicate a body of predominantly 2D photographic based particle size measurement systems that suffer from a number of significant errors except in the simplest case of a monolayer of particles under good illumination with limited colour variation in the material. In order to overcome these limitations a university and industry collaboration developed three-dimensional particle measurement (3DPM) between 2006 and 2012, based on 3D surface profile measurement of the visible material on conveyor. 3DPM avoids particle delineation errors due to variation in material colour and shadows, detects overlapping versus non-overlapping particles, and identifies areas of fine particles as fines and not large rocks. 3DPM measures: the visible material and calculates its particle size distribution, bulk volume, detects boulders, and conveyor belt fill factor in an automated consistent manner. Furthermore, 3DPM’s advanced algorithms allow observation of particle variation that would otherwise be undetected without the capacity to identify visible areas-of-fines and overlapped particles. Boliden Mines has installed 3DPM at three operations for measurement between the stockpile silo and grinding mill, and measurement after the primary crusher. Fragmentation measurements across multiple years of measurement are presented with some observations of plant behaviour. In the future 3DPM results will be incorporated into automatic control strategies for plant optimisation. 3DPM is used across a wide range of material types and applications that also includes; limestone aggregate for quality control in manufacturing, agglomerates for closed-loop automatic control in chemical production, and measurement of coke for size-based blending feed control to the blast furnace in steel production. At Cliffs Natural Resources Ltd (CNR) crushing and shipping sample stations, precisions are estimated for the sampling, preparation and measurement stages of iron ore sampling in accordance with ISO 3085 (2002). In this Standard, gross duplicate samples are prepared at each of the three stages, yielding eight measurement assays. Appropriate calculations of the differences between assay pairs are then made to estimate precision of each stage of sampling. The International Standard for checking precision in iron ore sampling, ISO 3085 (2002) prescribes a method for identifying outliers that is ambiguous and possibly inappropriate. The procedure also makes an unnecessary implicit assumption, that the differences between assay pairs are normally distributed. The Anderson-Darling statistic is used to demonstrate that in some cases the assay pair differences have distributions significantly different from normal. When applied at CNR as specified, the Standard leads to precision estimates well below the expected values, thus overestimating the sampling method's capability and limiting the opportunity for real process improvement. This paper suggests an improved method of estimating sampling, preparation and measurement precision. A bootstrap procedure is used to estimate confidence limits for the calculated precision estimates. The proposed method would be suitable for testing blasthole precision. The discussion is supported by extensive simulation modelling of realistic data.

Local communities are undertaking an increased role in mine project decision making processes, associated with growing pressure and expectations from regulators, financiers and the general public. This is particularly evident in international projects within developing economies. Environmental and social issues are often complex. Solutions demand difficult choices and trade-offs between sustainable development dimensions: economic growth, social equity and environmental integrity. Proactive stakeholder engagement can play a critical role in assisting decision-makers in determining the operational reality of sustainable development by jointly exploring project trade-offs between proponents and affected stakeholders. Good stakeholder engagement has other potential benefits, ranging from reduced financial risk due to regulator delays, legal disputes or negative publicity to increasing market share through good public image. Approaches to consultation and disclosure have changed from short-term regulatory based focuses, to longer-term, strategic tools for relationship building, proactive risk management and new business identification. Approaches to consultation form a significant opportunity to contribute to overall social sustainability. This paper discusses, based on authorsÆ experience, the broader concept of stakeholder engagement and its contribution to social sustainability of the mining industry. The focus is on key considerations for an effective stakeholder engagement. Three case studies outline how broad based, proactive stakeholder engagement can contribute to improved operation and overall sustainability. The case studies include: a greenfields project in Ghana; a long-term mine in Australia; and an open-pit mine in Vietnam.

An improved ground support method for development intersections, wide spans and stope brows was implemented at Kanmantoo mine. The method uses a jumbo to simultaneously drill and install self-drilling anchors (SDAs) to depths from 4.5 m to 7.0 m. Resin is subsequently pumped into each SDA using a specially designed integrated tool carrier basket, with plating occurring within 10 mins due to rapid resin cure. This methodology means that SDAs can be installed rapidly due to reduced process steps and wait times with reduced hazards to personnel. Cablebolts are used extensively in underground mines to reinforce the ground in wide spans, such as at intersections and stope brows. The flexible cablebolt tendon allows for a long, continuous and high-capacity reinforcing element to be inserted into the rock. A common cablebolt installation practice at Australian underground mines that do not utilise a mechanised cable bolter, is for cablebolt holes to be drilled by a jumbo or longhole rig, hand installation and grouting by a service crew, then plate tensioning following a grout curing wait time of typically 12 to 24 hours. This process involves multiple separate labour-intensive work processes and results in reduced availability of priority headings. This paper discusses the development history of vertical SDA use in wide spans at Kanmantoo mine. The installation process is fully described, including aspects such as reliable in-hole coupling of SDAs, resin selection and pumping aspects. A cost benefit assessment, and a case for ground stability are presented to compare cablebolt use to SDAs in development intersections.

Small orogenic gold deposits have the same deposit-scale geological and geochemical features as those that characterise giant orogenic gold systems (>16 Moz Au). Therefore, a broader-scale approach is needed to identify the critical controls on giant deposits and their disproportionate distribution throughout time and space. Ages of giant gold systems cluster around well-defined periods of lithospheric growth at continental margins, and it is orogen-scale processes during these Late Archaean, Early Proterozoic and Phanerozoic times that determine gold endowment of a province.   A critical factor for giant orogenic gold provinces appears to be asthenospheric upwelling at the time of gold mineralisation to most effectively transfer the thermal energy required to initiate and sustain high hydrothermal fluid flux. The extent of this fluid flux should be related to thickness of the lithosphere beneath a province at the time of gold mineralisation, such that giant gold deposits are much more likely to develop in orogens with oceanic or thinned continental lithosphere. A proxy for the latter is likely to be a short premineralisation crustal history such that thick subcontinental lithospheric mantle was not developed. Conversely, orogens with protracted premineralisation crustal histories are more likely to have a thick subcontinental lithospheric mantle, which is difficult to delaminate and, hence, such provinces will normally be poorly endowed. The nature of the lithosphere also influences the intrinsic gold concentrations of potential source rocks, with back-arc basalts, transitional basalts and basanites enriched in gold relative to other rock sequences. Thus, segments of orogens with thin lithosphere may be defined by conjunction of giant-scale fluid flux through gold-enriched sequences.   Although the nature of the lithosphere plays the crucial role in dictating which orogenic gold provinces will contain one or more giant deposits, the precise siting of those giants depends on the critical conjunction of a number of province-scale factors that control fluid conduits, traps, and seals in tectonically and lithospherically suitable terranes within accretionary orogens.

There is a sense of geometallurgy being new; a new methodology for mining project development and improved operational strategy. One of the main challenges that any ænewÆ technology faces is a validation of the value and the need to produce case studies. However, producing case studies can often be problematic particularly given the long cycle from mineral deposit project, through feasibility and construction to stabilised operation of a mine.However, the roots of geometallurgy go back quite some time. Successful practices with geometallurgy can be seen from as early as the 1980s. Many times those practices were not called geometallurgy but something else and, in other cases, what can be seen are various components of the geometallurgical ævalue chainÆ.This paper will analyse a selection of published past practices from a geometallurgical perspective to demonstrate the value realised from the application of this methodology. The paper will then make some general comments on where this history of work in geometallurgy has lead us to and what are the challenges today for the geometallurgical effort.CITATION:S R Williams, 2013. Ventilation on demand (VOD) has been demonstrated to significantly reduce operating costs for ventilation fans, by reducing fan output to meet demand. The most effective method for reducing operating costs is to use variable speed drives to adjust the speed of ventilation fans as required – this achieves significantly larger power savings that damper or vane control alone.However, this mode of control will significantly increase the number of speed cycles the ventilation fans will experience. Fabricated impellers have a limited number of start stop cycles based on the materials and method of construction, and the operating stresses due to centrifugal forces. This means that fans experiencing constant or regular speed changes will experience a reduced fatiguelife compared with fans that are run at constant speed.The fatigue life of fans operated under various speeds using VOD is difficult to predict, as it is dependent on the magnitude of speed changes, and the frequency, which will be varied to meet demand. It is important to be able to estimate remaining fatigue life to assist in maintenance planning and avoid unplanned maintenance activities.This paper will review extensive VOD data on fan operating conditions from two primary mine ventilation fans. This paper will demonstrate how this data can be used to calculate accumulated fatigue and predict the remaining fatigue life, and how this compares with fixed speed or non-VOD controlled fans.The increased maintenance costs for the impellers will also be estimated, and compared to the operating cost savings using VOD, to determine if the savings outweigh the additional maintenance costs.

Recognising the importance and significance of fundamental scientific knowledge of these systems, the International MOLTEN Conference series was established to provide a forum to bring together leading academic researchers and industrial engineers to present and discuss the latest scientific ideas and findings, and their application in their respective fields. This article presents an analysis of the research carried out in this field over time in terms of the number of journal articles, fields and slag systems studied and geographical origin of the research.

Rock mass response in blasting is an important element to determine the performance of a blast along with its other outcomes. The near-field monitoring for rock mass response analysis is vital for determining the behaviour of a blast; however, due to costly and cumbersome methods involved in such measurements the subject has received scant attention so far and the publications on this account are perfunctory in nature. This paper presents a non-destructive method to monitor the blast-induced pressure in the rock mass at a distance from a blasthole. The methodology of monitoring and a few examples of actual field monitoring are detailed in this paper. The responses of the rock in the near-field of a blasthole under dynamic loading have been documented to predict fragmentation and throw. The proposed method has also been used in limited cases earlier by the author to predict flyrock using a semi-empirical method and trajectory equation. Crandallite and millisite in Christmas Island 'B' and 'C' phosphate ores are rapidly decomposed by sodium hydroxide solutions at about 80QC. As these phosphates generally contain less than 1% silica, an alkaline extraction process can be designed, in which up to 95% of the sodium hydroxide used, may be recycled. The insoluble residue consists of an impure, highly reactive apatite, which in pot trials, has given good responses as a direct application fertiliser; alternatively this residue can be underacidulated to give a granular product with fertiliser potential. The hot leaching solution contains up to 95% of the alumina and approx- imately half of the phosphate from the original ore. Simple crystallising techniques have been developed on a laboratory-scale to use this leaching solution for producing smelter-grade alumina and detergent-quality trisodium phosphate. As the demand for detergents is limited, an investigation was made of the reaction between trisodium phosphate and slaked lime, derived from a high-grade New Zealand limestone occurring near Oamaru. The product is calcium phosphate, containing up to 40% P205, and less than 0.2% each of iron, aluminium and fluorine, and it should be a useful raw material for phosphoric acid manufacture. A preliminary economic evaluation of the whole process looks promising, And warrants further investigations, including pilot-plant work.
