Froth flotation process requires the use of frothers. These important flotation agents are commonly characterised as either æselectiveÆ or æpowerfulÆ and are chosen following general guidelines and verification by laboratory and/or pilot plant tests. Fundamental properties of the flotation frothers have been extensively studied over the last few years. These studies have led to the development of standardised procedures to characterise frothers in terms of their ability to reduce bubble size and to increase foam stability. In this research project, the performance of five frothers in flotation of coal is evaluated and related to the fundamental properties of these agents. Since the recovery of water in the concentrate is closely related to the non-selective transport of solid particles by entrainment, the tested frothers are also assessed in terms of their ability to promote the transport of water towards the froth collection zone, both in absence and in presence of solids.

The Kalgoorlie Golden Mile is proposed as an Archaean volcanogenic-type deposit, modified and redistributed along later-developed structures. Rich pyritctelluride and Green Leader gold mineralization is associated with the end phase of basic volcanism and, in a general sense, is confined to a broad interface zone between the products of marine basic volcanism and later acid volcanism. There is virtualIy no ore associated with the main body of acid volcanics.Green Leader is the local name of a type of ore that occurs at some igneous rock contacts in association with graphitic sediments and layered acidic tuffs. It is characteristicalIy green, of various shades, and commonly yields very high gold assays, the reasons for which are not apparent in hand specimen.Carbonates, carbonaceous shales, tuffites, rich gold ores, and acid and intermediate dykes, alI indicating a common heritage, are features common to the main ore hosts, viz. the Paringa Basalt (Calc Schist) and theGolden Mile Dolerite ("Quartz Dolerite Greenstone").Several probably related fracture systems have reconstituted most, but not all, of the original deposits into a large number of steep tabular lodes.Includes two sets of discussions and comments from later Proceedings volumes.

The transportation of solids by pipeline is not new. In 1891 a United States patent broadly covering a method of pumping coal with water was granted to W. C. Andrews. His pilot plant was constructed on what is now the site of the New- York Public Library in Manhattan. His process was applied to pumping coal mine waste back into the worked out portion of coal mines. On October 26, 1967, the world's first long distance iron ore slurry line was put into service by Savage River Mines. The commissioning of this 5.0 million dollar installation climaxed three years of development, testing, and construction and proved the Company's faith in pioneering' this unique transportation method for iron ore. This paper will discuss some of the more pertinent items in connection with that three-year period. Also to be discussed will be the operation of this line during the past eleven months.

For most practical rock engineering purposes, stress versus strength conditions around underground openings for which rock masses fail and their various modes of failure, are reasonably well-understood and predictable. Some rock masses and particular rock types fail slowly and relatively quietly. However, others can fail rapidly, violently and maybe with the ejection of significant broken rock. In some countries and in some mines, the latter style of violent fracturing and failure of the rock mass is referred to as ‘strain bursting’. It can be alarming and extremely hazardous to nearby miners and machines. For such situations, the design and installation of appropriate ground support, to provide a safe work place, can be challenging. At any particular mine site, it’s often generally understood which local rock masses (rock types) are prone to strain bursting. Competent and strong siliceous rocks and some massive sulphides are often the main offenders. While some neighbouring, equally-competent and strong rocks might also fail, they do so more quietly and without ejection. To understand this contrast, a better understanding of the fracturing process is required other than simple and standard strength versus stress considerations. Suites of standard intact rock properties from numerous Australian mines have been used to define and help understand different high-stress failure styles for component intact rock; especially those prone to violent fracturing (strain bursting). Simple considerations of micro-fracturing (defects in the intact material), plus the available energy at failure versus the energy consumed during fracturing, distinguishes between over-stressed and competent rock types that fracture violently and those that don’t. Backfill is usually considered a necessary evil that contributes little to the principal objective of the operation, ore production. Consequently, it is relegated to an auxiliary role in the operation with minimal equipment and resource allocation in planning and is only superficially considered during feasibility studies. In many mines, the inadequacy of the design and operation of the backfill system ultimately leads to frequent delays, excessive costs and, in the worst cases, major instabilities which result in reduced ore production and lost or unrecoverable ore reserves. The primary objective of backfill is to prevent the progressive deterioration of mined out excavations. With the exception of narrow vein operations, it is too weak to alter the mining induced stress regime and control stress concentrations caused by stope extractions. However, the direct benefits of backfill include the possibility to consider a wider range of mining methods, recovery of 100 per cent of the planned resource and the selection of a stoping sequence that minimises the regional stability problems that cause production shortfalls in the later years of mine production. Indirectly, backfill is a practical means of solving other issues, such as waste disposal, that impact the viability of mining. In Australia, the geotechnical conditions of many mines are becoming more difficult and increased attention to the importance of backfill is warranted. This paper describes realistic aspects of backfilling and the positive impacts a well co-ordinated fill system can have on mining activities as a whole. Examples are presented where an integrated approach to backfill systems have offered significant benefits to the operation.

WMC has mined the Perseverance disseminated orebody exclusively by SLC (sublevel cave) methods. Deteriorating ground conditions in the vicinity of an orebody inflection forced a re-evaluation of future mining at Perseverance and a strategy to drop down below the inflection zone and recommence the cave was implemented. This strategy has led to increased production at higher grades, resulting in lower costs and better mill recoveries. This paper describes the evolution of mine planning, development, support and production strategies through the successful process of implementing the ædrop-downÆ and re-establishing the SLC.

The Goonumbla district of central-west New South Wales, Australia, hosts four significant porphyry Cu-Au deposits that contain a combined probable ore reserve of 71.7 million tonnes at 1.2 per cent Cu and 0.5 g/t Au. Mineralisation in the Goonumbla deposits is associated with narrow, pipe-like intrusions of quartz monzonite porphyry, in which several intrusive phases have been recognised. Five textural characteristics have been used to distinguish the various intrusive phases recognised in the Goonumbla porphyry deposits: (1) phenocryst abundance; (2) nature of the groundmass; (3 and 4) proportion and mineralogy of the mafic and non-mafic phenocrysts; and (5) the presence or absence of anhedral quartz grains in the groundmass. In addition, each intrusive phase is classified according to its estimated original quartz, alkali feldspar and plagioclase contents. Features common to all of the intrusions are that they contain two types of plagioclase and two or three types of K-feldspar phenocrysts in variable proportions. Most of the intrusions also contain apatite micro-phenocrysts. The groundmass textures range from aphanitic through granular to euhedral K-feldspar in a quartz matrix. With only one exception, all of the intrusive phases recognised are either quartz monzonite porphyry or mafic (>5 per cent mafic minerals) quartz monzonite porphyry. The exception is a biotite - phyric monzodiorite, which occurs in the basal portions of one of the deposits. Textural variants of intrusive phases at Goonumbla have been investigated to establish whether specific combinations of characteristics indicate mineralised intrusions, while others suggest barren ones. Some correlations between intrusion types and Cu and Au grade have been recognised. In recent years, there has had a greater recurrence of studies and projects that consider tailings filtration followed by dry stacking to reduce the consumption of fresh water, the space required for disposal, and, eventually, to reduce the costs of the project. In addition, this technique could be required to meet new environmental restrictions to extend the life-of-mine of existing plants or to enable the development of new projects, especially in areas of high social interest. This article is intended to describe the most relevant technical aspects of the design and implementation of an iron ore tailings filtering system and its final overland disposal as well as physical and metallurgical surveys, and laboratory and pilot testing. Furthermore, it is presented how these activities are inserted in the project development to rationalise the resources. The case under study considers an iron mineral wet magnetic concentration processing plant. The outcome tailings are dewatered by means of thickeners, where the overflow water is recycled back to the plant. The underflow slurry is pumped into intermediate storage tanks before proceeding with further dewatering and final disposal. The project consists of a tailings filtration plant, belt conveying systems, a temporary stockpiling system, trucking loading and transportation system, moisture-conditioning facilities (spreading and airing), and final disposal facilities (compacting). Due to the stickiness of the filtered tailings that governs the belt conveying system design, the operating moisture range must be established. Besides, proper technical aspects such as planning, executing, and analysing both the laboratory and the pilot testing data to validate process design parameters; selecting filters; defining spare filtering capacity; handling the out-of-range filtrated moisture; sizing the belt conveying system; configuring the equipment involved, must be considered.

Geometallurgical parameters are descriptions of the mineralogy and microstructure of the ore determining its mineralogical and microstructural characteristics. From a conditional geostatistical simulation of such properties, a processing model can compute recovery, equipment usage, processing costs, and thus the monetary value for mining and processing a block with certain processing parameters. The output can be used for optimising mining sequences or finding optimal processing parameters by solving the corresponding stochastic optimisation problem.The approach requires two properties of the simulation not provided by established geostatistical techniques:Many relevant geometallurgical parameters are from non-Euclidean statistical scales such as (mineral) compositions, (grain size) distribution, (grain) geometry, and (stratigraphic type) categorical, which might produce nonsensical values (for example, negative proportions, negative facies probablities, planar grains) when simulated with standard geostatistical techniques.Due to the nonlinearity of processing, the entire conditional distribution of the geometallurgical parameters is relevant, not only its mean and variance. The geostatistical simulation needs to reproduce the joint conditional distributions of all the geometallurgical parameters.The multipoint conditional geostatistical simulation technique discussed here allows for jointly simulating dependent spatial variables from various sample spaces. The technique combines an infill simulation, similar to the one used in multipoint geostatistics, with a new form of distributional regression to estimate conditional distributions of arbitrary scales from different information sources, including training images, training models and observed data. The distributional regression is based on a generalisation of logistic regression and is related to both Bayesian Maximum Entropy geostatistics and high order cumulants.The method ensures that simulated data reside in the set of possible values and honour the characteristics of the joint distribution to be reproduced. A major challenge for closure planning at mining operations below the water table is evaporation from final void pit lakes and concentration of salts, which can impact on downstream groundwater (and surface water) flows and quality. Where such impacts are deemed unacceptable, the closure approach that is often adopted is to infill the final voids with waste rock to above the pre-mining water table to prevent the development of a pit lake and subsequent evaporative losses. BHP Billiton Iron OreÆs Marillana Creek (Yandi) mining operations face these issues. The orebody is a channel iron deposit that forms the major aquifer in the region, which will be completely mined as a series of elongated open pits over tens of kilometres. The major constraint on mine closure planning was the stripping ratio of less than one, which means that there is insufficient waste rock to infill all areas to the pre-mining water table. Hydrogeological investigations and groundwater modelling indicated that standard mine closure approaches would result in pit void lakes becoming saline sinks unless the residual void geometry was optimised to minimise evaporation and maximise throughflow. The solution developed is a cost-effective long-term mine plan that meets all mine closure objectives, and involved:the selective infilling of all pits, largely using run-of-mine waste dumping with limited re-handling; the diversion of the major part of up-catchment creek flows around the mining operations to allow mining of the resource under Marillana Creek crossings, which in turn restricted overall aquifer recharge and reduced the elevation of the long-term water table; the diversion of some minor creek tributary flows into specific locations within the mine path to induce hydraulic gradients to maintain groundwater throughflow and water quality; and close integration of mine plan optimisation (mining and waste dumping schedules) with groundwater modelling scenarios to achieve acceptable environmental outcomes. This approach is designed to result in no reduction in downstream surface water flows or quality, maintenance of adequate downstream groundwater throughflow to support groundwater dependent ecosystems, and no reduction in the beneficial use status of the downstream groundwater resource.

Globally, it is anticipated that the mineral sands industry will enter a period of short supply. Demand for both titanium dioxide and zircon is forecast to continue increasing, with new projects needed to come on-stream to fill the supply gap. Victoria is well placed under this scenario as a source due to the high quality of its mineral assemblage, its excellent resource grade and the globally significant size of its mineral sands resources.Australia’s mineral sands rich Murray Basin remains under-developed, especially at its extensive Victorian margins. Development to date has not progressed adequately for the reasons of technology difficulty, history of competition with other jurisdictions and the absence of a platform that requires development as a consideration for security of tenure. Victoria’s mineral sands potential is not just about the Murray Basin, in addition, there have been discoveries in the Gippsland Basin and prospective sites in the Gippsland Basin remain under-explored. Key problems included the lack of available ground for potential developers and the intellectual property of solutions to technological problems associated with the fine grained mineral deposits belonging to a previous developer (with patents now expired).As such, the timing is right to re-visit the potential of the Murray Basin as a site for long-term development with high returns based on current and predicted prices.In order to understand why Victoria’s earth resources in general, and mineral sands in particular, remain under-explored and undeveloped, the Department of Primary Industries initiated an internal review of its role in encouraging and supporting investment in the earth resources sector.As a result, the Victorian Government has committed to taking action to encourage effective ground turnover and acknowledges that a new focus on engagement with industry is needed to bring new investment to the State. The revision of the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990 provides an opportunity for the government to better align its legislative processes with industry project lifecycles and facilitate access to valuable resources that currently remain undeveloped.Victoria has a track record in assisting projects reach development stage. Iluka currently has two operations in the State in addition to its mineral separation plant that is capable of processing HMC from its South Australian operations. Iluka is expected to ramp up its Murray Basin Stage 2 operations with the WRP mine scheduled to come on line in early 2012. Meanwhile, Astron is actively seeking partners for its Donald Mineral Sands project. The project is becoming increasingly attractive given the recent price hike in zircon; Astron has access to an estimated five to 6 Mt of zircon in its Donald WIM 250 deposit.Given its substantial and valuable mineral sands endowments, the State of Victoria should sensibly be the centre of future investment in project development. However, as previously mentioned this is currently not the case. The Government is therefore committed to implementing new measures that protect security of tenure but ensure that genuine companies can access endowments where they have a clear intent to work those resources.

The Louvicourt Mine is located 600 km north of Montreal in the province of Quebec, Canada. The owners are Aur Resources Inc (30 per cent), mine operator, Novicourt Inc (45 per cent) and Teck Corporation (25 per cent). It is an underground mechanised operation with a total work of 290 employees. Since 1994, the mine production is 11 120 456 tonnes at 3.60 per cent Cu, 1.51 per cent Zn, 26.07 g/mt Ag and 0.96 g/mt Au. At a rate of 4300 tonnes per day 365 days per year. Louvicourt Mine is a copper operation since 80 per cent of our revenue is from copper. The mining method is transverse blasthole stoping, mining primary and secondary stopes. The stope dimension is 15 m wide by 30 m high and 10 m to 80 m long for primary stopes. The secondary stopes are limited at 25 m long. Close to 100 000 metres of production drilling per year is required for 115 mm and 165 mm diameter holes. Backfilling is done with pastefill from the start of the operation in 1994. The binder ratio is 4.5 per cent in primary and two per cent in secondary stopes (80 per cent slag and 20 per cent cement). Development requirement to maintain production was 5000 m from 1996, 1997, 1998, 4200 in year 1999, 3200 m in year 2000 and an average of 2500 m in 2001 and 2002. Typical 6.0 m + 4.3 m, 4.9 m + 4.6 m and 4.5 m + 4.6 m headings. In addition more than 1500 metres of development will be excavated in/under paste backfill before 2004. A total of 60 mobile units are required among which for lateral development (three two boom electric hydraulic jumbos û AC Boomer 322, four electric hydraulic roofbolters û Maclean MEM-928 and AC Boltec PL350 and two anfo loader truck û Dux) and for production (four ITH drills û MTI, one electric hydraulic longhole drill û AC Simba H1357, eight LHD û AC-Wagner ST8-B, 1 LHD ST-1000 and two haulage 30 tons trucks û Dux. The 1 January 2002 reserves are 4.1 M tonnes grading 3.1 per cent Cu and 1.9 per cent Zn at an NSR (Net Smelter Revenue) of $US 53. The operating mining costs were at an average of $US 23 from 1996 to year 2000 and $US 25 in 2001. The operating costs ranged from a low of $US 0.41 per pound of copper in 1999 to a high of $US 0.49 per pound of copper in 1998.

Water in mining, mineral processing and metal production on a life cycle basis has been at the top of agendas for various industries, government agencies, research organisations, academic institutions and communities. As a result, a number of water footprint assessment methodologies have been developed. However, their practical applications in mining and mineral processing industries with specific case studies are still rare.A key objective of the Minerals Down Under Flagship is to contribute to the long-term sustainability of the Australian mining and mineral industries. Researchers in the Mineral Futures theme have developed robust assessment methods to evaluate the impact of mining and minerals technology development on the environment. The future of mining and the mineral industry is strongly linked with its sustainability - better water management strategies will need to be implemented.Life cycle assessment (LCA) has been a recognised method for measuring the environmental impacts of products, processes and services. It provides a scientifically sound method of comparing products and processes using a common basis and identifies so called æhot spotsÆ and opportunities for reducing environmental impacts. The water footprint of mining, mineral processing and metal production using an LCA basis is still scarce in the literature. Research methodology is now being applied in detail for copper, gold and nickel. A primary focus has been the relationship between ore grade and water use for which mathematical models are being developed. These types of models provide inputs for LCA of mining and mineral processing plants and can identify water saving opportunities through scenarios and process route analysis.CITATION:Northey, S and Haque, N, 2013. The brown coal deposits of the Latrobe Valley are ideal for open cut mining and this method has been used since the start of coal winning in 1894. Operations at the main Yall9urn open cut commenced in 1922, but after a few years the main excavators were replaced by German continuous excavators and subsequent developments of Yallourn and the newer Morwell open cut have been based on this type of plant. The reasons for preferring continuous to intermittent excavators in the Latrobe Valley are indicated in this paper.Under the pressure of post-war conditions, and from their long experience and ability, German engineers have recently made substantial improvements in their continuous excavators and these developments have been enhanced by some American innovations. These changes have extended the economic limits of open cut mining and also serve to emphasize the close inter-relation between the nature of coal and overburden deposits, excavator design and methods of operation.As an aid to descriRing recent excavator developments, this interdependence is demonstrated by means of diagrams which show typical methods of operations, together with examples of actual machines using these methods. The types of excavator dealt with are mainly those in use at, or destined for Yallourn or Morwell open cuts, together with additional types used in U.S.A. and Western Europe. For completeness, and also because they will continue in service at Yallourn and Morwell for some years, rail-mounted dredgers have been included in this paper even though in Europe they are now regarded as obsolescent.Explanations are given of how the intrinsic qualities of Latrobe Valley brown coal and overburden have sometimes prevented overseas plants from operating with the full efficiencies and/or in the methods visualized by the manufacturer, and references are made to the modifications and investigations being undertaken to overcome these problems.A compresensive bibliography is given. Dates shown on illustrations are not commissioning dates of the plant concerned, but the year when photographed.

The feasibility of increasing the deportment of titanium species and the stability of the pseudobrookite solid solution (M3O5) in a titaniferous slag was investigated, to facilitate the valourisation of titaniferous slags. Thermochemical simulations using FactSage™ software, ver 8.3 (by Thermofact/CRTC and GTT-Technologies), and equilibration-quench experiments were conducted using an appropriate synthetic titaniferous slag composition in an oxygen partial pressure (pO2) ranging from air to 10-16 atm under non-isothermal conditions. The temperature-pressure phase stability diagram for the synthetic slag containing 37.19 per cent TiO2, 19.69 per cent SiO2, 13.12 per cent Al2O3, 16.00 per cent CaO and 14.00 per cent MgO showed that the spinel solid solution (M3O4) was the primary phase until a pO2 of 10-10.5 atm, thereafter M3O5 was the primary phase until a pO2 10-13.2 atm. M3O4 again was the primary phase between a pO2 10-13.2 and 10-16 atm. The changeover of the primary phase coincided with an increase in the liquidus surface. When cooling the slag in a pO2 of 10-16 atm, M3O5 crystallised as a ternary phase that showed a rapid increase in mass while that of the primary M3O4 phase decreased and that of the secondary perovskite (CaTiO3) phase increased at a slower rate. At 1300°C under sub-liquidus conditions, the contents of M3O5, M3O4 and CaTiO3 were about 20 per cent, 15 per cent, and 11 per cent, respectively. Experimental results showed that the Ti3+/Ti4+ mass ratio in the M3O5 phase, ie a measure of the reduction of titanium species, is not considerably sensitive to equilibration temperature in the reviewed range. Slow cooling and minimum/no oxidation during cooling of titaniferous slag would increase the deportment of titanium species to, and the growth and stability of the M3O5 phase.

The Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) is situated 38 km north-east of Cloncurry in the Mount Isa – Cloncurry mineral district of northwest Queensland. The EHM orebody is an iron oxide copper gold deposit with an average grade of one per cent copper, 0.5 g/t gold and 23 per cent magnetite, with current reserves of approximately 88 Mt.The copper concentrator is a single line plant with a nominal throughput rate of 1300 tonnes per hour. An average of 350 000 tonnes of concentrate is produced each year containing around 100 000 tonnes of copper metal and 120 000 troy ounces of gold.In December 2009, Xstrata Copper announced approval of a $589 M investment to extend the life of EHM to at least 2024, through the transformation of open pit mining operations to a major underground mine together with the construction of an associated magnetite extraction plant.The EHM magnetite plant extracts the magnetite from the copper concentrator’s tailings stream. It will produce approximately 1.2 Mt of magnetite concentrate per annum at full capacity for export to Asia, making EHM Queensland’s first iron ore concentrate exporter. Construction of the magnetite extraction plant commenced in July 2010 and was completed in January 2011.This paper gives an overview of the development of the EHM magnetite extraction plant flow sheet from the early mineralogy and laboratory test work through to the plant commissioning and early operation of the base plant. It has a major focus on the commissioning learnings from the plant start-up and includes a review of the operational performance of the plant versus original design and expectations.

FLSmidth (FLS) has spent the last 15 years, working with customers and engineering houses to deliver innovative improvements in crusher safety, coupled with the latest, maintenance friendly, crusher design. The key focus being to prevent service personnel from working underneath the crusher during maintenance and obviate the need for personnel to be exposed to suspended loads when performing tasks such as, main shaft installation, for example. Improvements include: full top-service capability to ensure the safest and fastest way to disassemble the crusher for maintenance purposes, which also removes the requirement for a service cart; a selfaligning main shaft which ensures remote assembly is now possible, keeping service personnel well out of harm’s way; And rotable shells, or the ability to perform relines off-station, allows for quick shell ‘swap-over’ without the downtime associated with removing, refitting and curing time associated with epoxy backing. The high flow spider improves large material entry into the crusher, reducing blockages and downtime and therefore maintains crusher capacity. Each size of crusher in the range comes with an option to increase the standard feed opening to a larger one if desired to compensate for ‘blocky’ or ‘elongated’ feed material, a common problem for Pilbara hematite iron ores. Power capability has also been increased with a maximum of 1500 kW, to match the higher throughput capacities being achieved. This due to uprated eccentric speeds and larger discharge annulus. Increased eccentric throws and mantle diameters are also now a reality, when compared to more traditional designed gyratory crushers. To keep up with the improved design features of the Mk V, digitalisation has also been upgraded to maximise performance capabilities to ensure that the most efficient reduction and throughput capacities are achieved, whilst utilising the higher powers now available as standard. Condition monitoring ensures that the crusher is at its optimum operating capability by monitoring and adjusting the crusher settings via feedback from additional sensors, ie main shaft spin, temperature and vibration. Camera monitoring capabilities are available as is an advanced oil contamination monitoring system. As a result of the above design improvements, it will be shown that the Mk V range offers benefits such as: enhanced safety features, increased availability, faster maintenance turnarounds, higher power utilisation, equivalent product size at higher throughput capacities and with Remote operation capabilities. All of which result in a gyratory crusher with higher levels of safety and a lower per tonne operating cost.

Multielement reconnaissance geochemistry coupled with ground scintillation gamma ray measurements has been used to investigate the dispersion patterns of uranium and other major and trace elements in the arid Palmyrides region of central Syria. This region occupies an interplatform depression in the northern part of the Arabia Plate, upon which sediments up to 10 km thick have accumulated. Outcrops of strongly fractured Mesozoic and Cenozoic rocks form two major mountain belts, the northern and southern Palmyrides, between which is located the closed Ad-Daww basin, with a thick Neogene and Quaternary clastic cover. Among the various lithologies, phosphorites are well represented. Uranium and associated elements have been incorporated into the Upper Cretaceous and Lower Palaeogene sediments, especially the phosphorites, which are well represented in the region. These elements are derived from three possible sources, namely, sea water, Lower Cretaceous volcanism and metalliferous fluids leaking along taphrogenic lineaments. In and around the phosphorites, numerous traces of secondary uranium mineralization occur. Over 500 geochemical samples of outcropping rock, wadi and playa sediments, overburden and groundwaters were taken over an area of approximately 9000 sq km. Most samples were analyzed for 25 major and trace elements by nebulization ICPAES; for As, Sb, Bi and Se by hydride generation and ICPAES; and for U, Th and La and other REE by neutron activation analysis.

The mines of the future can be envisioned as complex, large-scale technological systems being operated remotely from few centrally located (major cities) operating centres and skeletal crew stationed at the site. These systems will require remotely located human operators to constantly adapt to new and unforeseen system and environmental demands. In addition, the remote operators will need to match system properties to the changing demands and operational conditions, ie must be able to handle the ‘non-design’ emergencies, because the system designers would not have been able to foresee all possible scenarios of failures and provide automatic safety devices for every contingency. Therefore, it is highly important that the operators’ job, which involves problem solving and decision making at the workstation level, is facilitated by the proper interface designs. This paper argues that decision support systems and thus human-system interfaces for the mines of the future should be developed based on the principles of human-system integration that take into account human information processing and cognitive abilities. The information presented to the operator must support the operator in taking appropriate action through a human-system interface designed according to scientific principles of User Centred Design. A case study is presented where an iterative design process was used by CSIRO researchers as an evaluation method involving users (control room operators) at several stages of the user interface design in order to correct any design inadequacies as they emerged. This process allowed the designers to identify any usability issues before the user interface was fully implemented, which subsequently enabled the control room operators to easily adapt to the new interface and carry out all designated tasks in a timely and effective manner.

Late in 2005 it became apparent that cave propagation at the Northparkes Mine was not progressing as planned. By mid-2006 sufficient Reserves were identified to warrant an extensive drill and blast program to assist in cave propagation. This program began late in 2006 and concluded early 2007. A significant challenge faced was the drilling and blasting of holes between 75 - 240 m in length in the South Wedge in Lift 2 at Northparkes Mines E26 orebody. The project set new benchmarks in production drilling and charging in underground metalliferous mining. This paper discusses the drill and blast designs, the challenges and the operational issues encountered with this project. Also highlighted are ways in which these were overcome.
