Ledcap Pty Ltd has developed two software tools for assisting in the determination of life-of-mine (LOM) trucking requirements. The first tool generates haul paths and the second calculates truck travel time over these paths. The two step approach allows the paths to be viewed and if required edited, to better represent the actual site haul routes.The first tool automatically creates haul paths between the mine bench and the dump. To do this the user supplies a master haul route and a scheduled block model. The master haul path and the block model are interacted to create multiple haul routes, one for each pit/dump bench pair in each scheduling period. Each path carries with it a record of the scheduling period it represents and the dry tonnage hauled over the path in that period.The second tool calculates truck travel time over the path. Data from the manufacturer's rimpull and retarder curves are used to calculate accelerations and speed over each segment of the haul path. As the paths are derived from digitised representations of mine haul routes the path f les often have over a hundred segments. This detailed representation of the haul route allows the software to automatically adjust speed for different radius corners and accurately simulates the changing accelerations over the gradient changes that occur in real life mine ramps. Rolling resistance can be specified at a global level, at a segment level and at a period level. This allows rolling resistance to be changed seasonally as well as spatially.Life-of-mine trucking studies attempt to calculate an accurate answer from extremely variable inputs. This paper will detail the features of the two software tools and how the tools provided in the software can assist the mine planner to have greater confidence in their life-of-mine trucking requirements and the subsequent production capacity inputs to their scheduling calculations.

The extent to which man's activities are influencing the earth's climate is subject to considerable debate. Internationally however, this debate has been put aside somewhat by the Kyoto Protocol. This international agreement is the political response to the threat of Global warming, predicated on the precautionary principle.NZ is seeking to be a leader in the Kyoto Protocol. Given our unique GHG emission profile and the structure of our economy, and the major uncertainties in both the science of climate change and the Kyoto Protocol itself, this desire to lead is absolutely inappropriate in this instance. We face a different, and often more severe, set of challenges in an economy that prices C emissions than virtually all of our trading partners. Unfortunately, these differences have not been reflected in climate change policy development to date. This represents a major threat to New Zealand's economy, wealth and jobs, particularly in the sectors that have been the core drivers of our economy over the last 20 years or so - agriculture, energy, primary processing. We do not, and should not, seek to avoid the issue but we must protect our economy and move with or follow our trading partners and competitors, not lead them.

Bowen Basin coalmines suffer from hot and humid ambient conditions during the summer period. The ambient conditions combined with high VRTs, increasing depth of working and significant equipment heat loads results in heat issues underground. Coalmines operate under heat stress management plans as required by legislation with associated trigger action response plans (TARPs). Some mines also employ refrigeration as part of their heat management strategy.A recent case study was conducted on a mine producing about 4.5 Mt/a from their longwall and experiences summer surface ambient temperatures of about 23.5ºCwb. The expected virgin rock temperature is 46ºC at 300 m depth. The mine currently introduces a modest amount of surface cooling at the portal using ‘off-the-shelf’ air conditioning units. This system does not effectively manage face temperature primarily due to positional inefficiency.Underground conditions remain hot in summer and work is typically undertaken in accordance with the Heat TARP. This has a direct impact on the productivity of crews, worker comfort and also negatively impacts the workforce morale. The mine commissioned a study to determine a refrigeration strategy aimed at maintaining underground conditions below TARP levels 90 per cent of the time.The ventilation network model was calibrated against actual temperature data to simulate the heat loads including longwall, conveyor system, strata and auxiliary diesel fleet. This model was then used to determine the cooling requirements for bulk surface cooling, bulk underground cooling, surface district cooling and underground district cooling strategies.These estimates were used to undertake a total owning cost trade-off for the different strategies. The study concluded that a chilled air shaft has the lowest technical risk but the highest total owning cost due to shaft development needs. Introducing chilled water to an underground cooler via boreholes offered the lowest total owning cost and was therefore recommended.CITATION:van den Berg, L and Olsen, M, 2017. Based on relative CO2, N2, and 3He contents, geothermal systems of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, TVZ, can be subdivided into two major groups: arc-type systems, associated with andesitic magmatism along the eastern boundary of the TVZ, and rift-type systems over its western parts. The highly increased N2/3He, CO2/3He and CO2/Cl ratios of the former are ascribed to entrainment of large proportions of volatiles of subducted, marine sedimentary origin. The largely rhyolitic, rift-type magmas are assumed to have formed from volatile-depleted, residual melts. Correlations of Cl and CO2 with heat contents suggest that formation of the two types of source magmas involves mixing of two end member components: a low-volatile melt with a heat/Cl ratio of 25 Ml/mol (0.7 MJ/g), and a low Cl vapor with a heat/CO2 ratio of 5 Ml/mol. On the basis of these values, the heat associated with andesitic magmas is found to be carried in close to equal parts by both vapor and melt; for the rhyolitic melts the proportion contributed from the vapor is only about 2%. The heat/He ratios of the rhyolitic source magmas for the rift-type geothermal discharges from the TVZ of 0.12¦0.05 Ml/pmol is within the range of 0.05 to 0.2 Ml/pmol of the upper mantle. The higher heat/3He ratios for the arc-related magmas of 0.4¦0.2 Ml/pmol are likely to be due to the high proportions of heat carried in the form of a separate, low 3He vapor phase derived largely from subducted sediments.

Suddenly, mining has been thrust into the limelight. It has a large image that casts its shadow over New Zealand. Is it any wonder that resistance has heightened and that an almost unprepared populous is currently struggling to protect the very land they hold dear. Next to the atomic bomb, mining has the demonstrated power to massively change the land and its side effects can pollute many miles beyond the operation. During the past year, New Zealand concern over the possible effects of the mining proposals has become acute. This was specially so in the areas of special environmental quality, such as the Coromandel, and here a very unhappy situation has arisen.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, and may I thank you for inviting me once again to address your conference. I would first like to welcome you all, especially international delegates and conference speakers. ItÆs a pleasure to be with you all and I hope that you have the time to enjoy the many beautiful sights that the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty have to offer.   Holding your conference in Waihi is particularly apt, especially bearing in mind the conference theme û 'Mining in the Community'. There can be few venues in the world that can boast a world class gold deposit of the likes of Martha Hill located right here in the centre of a rural service town. ItÆs a deposit that has a mining history active now in its third century and that to date has yielded some 7.5 million ounces of gold and 50 million ounces of silver. I doubt that when John McCombie and Robert Lee discovered gold at Martha Hill in 1878 that they had any inkling that their endeavours would be the foundation for a mine that would become such an inseparable part of the economic and social fabric of Waihi for the next 130 years.   This is now my fifth appearance at a New Zealand minerals conference, I especially value such occasions as it allows me to comment on your industryÆs performance over the past year, share my thoughts on matters affecting your industry, and also to give you some feedback from central government.

Radio Detection and Ranging is an active form of remote sensing. The-imaging system sends out a source of electromagnetic energy to 'illuminate' the terrain and then records the energy returned. The wavelengths used by radar are in the microwave region and vary from a few millimetres to about a metre. Radar systems are independent of lighting conditions and weather. In addition, targets may be illuminated in the optimum direction to enhance features of interest. New Zealand was one of the principal investigators on the Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR-B) experiment, part of the payload on Challenger Mission 41-G in October 1984. Data collected over New Zealand was restricted to two very poor quality optical images and one poor quality digital data take. The digital image covered the ranges between the Hawke Bay-Wairoa Basin and the Volcanic Plateau. Variations of texture in this image frequently were indicative of variations in lithology and induration. The image also clearly depicted major faults where these had had a significant effect on the topography.

The emission of seam gases into underground workings in coal mines is acknowledged as a major hazard, particularly methane due to its possible ignition. Acknowledge of seam gas parameters is important for the prediction of gas emission rates into the ventilating air current. They are also important as the basis for the evaluation of the likely contained gas as a possible energy source.   Gas content determinations for the Kupakupa seam have been made at the Huntly West Mine.  Applying the method of Creedy (1986) to face samples, gas contents of 1.80 and 1.66 have been determined. Using desorbed and residual gas content data a content of 1.92 m3/t has been derived. These are on an ash included basis. Calculations using the adsorption equation of Kim (1977) and coal quality have given a gas content of 2.19 m3 t. Long-hole exploration drilling at Huntly West Mine has provided information on gas pressure. A pressure rise test has given a reading of 500 kPa (absolute); this is low compared with the pressure given for the determined gas content from theoretical adsorption isotherms.

Arc-type volcanic activity has been a major feature of the late Cenozoic geological evolution of the Pacific-Australian plate boundary in the northernNew Zealand region. The time/space distribution patterns of arc-type rocks reflect changes in the nature of the plate boundary as it has evolved. Inception of volcanism began in the north during earliest Miocene times (26 Ma) following ophiolite emplacement and during the next 10 Ma developed into a volcanic arc segment extending south to the present position of the central North Island. The northern part of the arc became extinct about 15Ma ago, but activity continued in the central (Coromandel) part of the arc until about 5 Ma ago. In late Pliocene and Quaternary times volcanic activity has become concentrated in a northeast trending zone which is collinear with the Tonga-Kermadec Arc.   These time/space patterns can be interpreted in two ways. Firstly, if relative plate motion was essentially transform in the region prior to 26 Ma then a small change in the relative plate vectors may have initiated subduction and the associated volcanism. Southward evolution of the arc can then be seen as the straightening and extension of a single arc. Alternatively, the distribution of volcanic rocks can be interpreted as the capture of a relatively short lived arc by southward migration of the dominant Tonga-Kermadec subduction system.

I report results of over 850 microprobe analyses of sulfides, sulfosalts and electrum from the Favona adularia-sericite epithermal deposit of the Waihi district in the southern Hauraki Goldfield of New Zealand. Pyrite and marcasite from altered wall rocks that enclose the veins are stoichiometric, with compositions of FeS2, and no significant trace elements. In contrast, pyrite in veins commonly contains appreciable As (up to 3.2 wt per cent), and locally contains several tenths of a percent of Cu, Zn, Co, Ag and Sb. Vein pyrite may contain up to 0.22 per cent Au, but Au contents do not show a positive correlation with As. Limited electrum data indicate that it ranges from Ag0.47 Au0.53 to Ag0.54Au0.41Cu0.01Zn0.04. Chalcopyrite is stoichiometric CuFeS2, and most galena is PbS, but some galena contains up to 4.4 wt per cent Se, which substitutes for S in its lattice. The galena is not argentiferous; the highest Ag content is 0.45 wt per cent Ag. Sphalerite averages 4 mol per cent FeS, but ranges up to 15 mol per cent. Tetrahedrites [(Cu,Ag)10(Zn,Fe)2(As,Sb)4S13] show variable substitution, but most are Cu- Zn- and Sb-rich. Veins also contain aguilarite (Ag4SeS), stromeyerite (CuAgS), naumannite (Ag2Se), and mckinstryite [(Ag,Cu)2S].

The purpose of this paper is to provide an illustration of the Resource Management Act processes at their best. Many of you will be aware of the Martha Mine situated in the middle of Waihi Township in Hauraki District. Underground mining ceased on Martha Hill in the 1950s. A new mining licence was issued in the late 1980s and since that date open cast mining has continued at the site. The Hauraki District Council notified its proposed plan in October 1994. Prior to that date numerous discussion papers and draft sections of the plan had been disseminated in the community. Considerable consultation was undertaken with all interest groups. As an indication of the success of that consultation process only 17 references to the Environment Court were lodged following the making of decisions on submissions and further submissions. Those references, which included a number from the Minerals Industry, were all resolved by consent. Out of the reference and consent order process EMMA (Extended Martha Mineral Area) was born.

Experimental Study of Ore Characterisation Methods for AG/SAG Mills Mining companies have long recognised the importance of ore breakage characterisation in design and optimisation of their crushing and grinding circuits. In one of the industry standard methods relevant to AG/SAG milling, ore is characterised using mainly high energy single impact tests. However recent DEM studies have suggested that breakage in AG/SAG mills is mainly due to low energy repetitive (or multiple) collisions rather than single high energy impacts. Hence a study was initiated at the JKMRC to investigate the behaviour of ores under such conditions. Carefully designed experiments have been performed using two laboratory mill sizes (0.6 m and 1.1 m diameter) to mimic the reported low energy repetitive impact breakage under low load conditions. The breakage characterisation parameters derived from standard high energy single impact tests on the same ores was then used to predict the low energy repetitive impact breakage. Significant bias was found in the simulations which clearly warranted further investigation. The extensive experimental program which followed employed three separate methods: the JKRBT (JK Rotary Breakage Tester) for high energy single impact and low energy repetitive impacts, gravity drops for low energy repetitive impacts, and laboratory mills to provide an extended number of low energy repetitive impacts. The breakage energies associated with these experiments were accurately measured with a high speed video camera. Two breakage indices, the degree of breakage (t10) and the breakage probability (S) were used to describe the breakage test results. This paper summarises the major results from this experimental study, which has facilitated the development of a new breakage characterization method relevant to AG/SAG mill modelling.

Alteration and mineralisation at the Island Copper deposit is related to the intrusion of Early Jurassic quartz feldspar porphyry dykes into surrounding comagmatic Bonanza volcanic rocks. The pyrophyilite alteration zone forms an upward flaring cone, largely hosted within a breccia body that cross-cuts the Co, Mo, and Au-rich ore shell. This alteration zone contains pyrophyllite, dumortierite and diaspore and resembles alteration occurring in some high-sulfidation deposits, but which is barren. Fluid-mineral equilibria and fluid inclusion studies indicate formation at approximately 300 ¦C from fluids dominated by steam and gases. These fluids appear highly acidic, but sulfur poor, leading to extreme base leaching within the breccia body and surrounding rocks.

Alluvial platinum was recovered during gold mining operations in Maud Creek, a tributary of the Howard River. Average electron probe analyses give Pt 88.75, Fe 5.27, Ir 0.70, Os 1.06, Pd 0.34, Ru 0.14, Rh 1.29, Cu 1.06. Rare grains of a Pt-Fe-Cu alloy are also present and an unusual feature of all grains is the relatively high rhodium content which finds expression in segregations of rhodium arsenide, cherepanovite. Platinum is found in the Orepuki area of Southland, where it is probably partly derived from the mafic rocks of the Longwood Complex. Rocks of the Rotoroa Complex, similar to those of the Longwood Complex, form bedrock in Maud Creek and are possibly the source of the Howard platinum. Alternatively, it might be derived by glacial transport from the Matakitaki ultramafic block 30 km to the southwest. Origin from the Rotoroa rocks is preferred as, if the Matakitaki rocks are part of the Dun Mountain Ophiolites, they might be expected to contain osmiridium rather than platinum. The ratio Pt:Ir-Os has been widely used to distinguish low Pt:Ir-Os ophiolitic from high Pt:Ir-Os gabbroic assemblages. Mafic complexes such as Longwoods, Darran, Rotoroa, and Riwaka might be expected to show similar high Pt:Ir-Os ratios and be targets for platinum exploration. Detrital platinum examined from the Parapara area, Golden Bay is mainly osmiridium, with rare grains of rutheniridosmine, very similar in composition to that found in concentrates from the Kaniere dredge, West Coast.

The demand for gallium has increased significantly over the last few decades due to the expanding use of Ga compounds in the electronics industry. Because it is widely dispersed and rarely found naturally in concentrations greater than 0.1%, Ga is expensive (approximately US$500/kg) and difficult to produce in large quantities.   A previous study of metals in geothermal systems reported significant quantities of Ga present in the muds on the northeast margin of Lake Rotokawa, an acidic lake associated with a high-temperature geothermal field situated in the Taupo Volcanic Zone of New Zealand. Similar muds are present in many other geothermal fields in the zone, suggesting that geothermal muds could be a commercial source ofGa.

Grinding and Flowing Investigation on Dry Stirred Ball Milling in Order to Determine the Influence of Grinding Aids Huge difficulties of the great ultra fine ground material production in dry stirred ball mill are the cohesion and agglomeration of the particles. During grinding the material stick on the grinding wall and the grinding media furthermore the grinds start cohere, making aggregation and agglomeration to appear. Due to these effects the particle size will not decrease after a certain value during grinding and the energy demand increases significantly. According to experience on fine grinding in ball mill, it is well known that these effects can be reduced with the use of grinding aids. The influence of grinding aids has three different effects: due to the adsorption strength reduction (Rebinder effect) the grinding resistance of the material decreases; the surface energy diminishes and the agglomeration liability decreases; and the flow properties of material improve. The aim of this study is to investigate the flow properties of fine grinds and the effect of grinding aids on flow properties in case of dry stirred ball milling. In addition, the influence of grinding aids was investigated based on the particle size distribution and specific surface area of grinds and the specific energy demand of grinding. The examinations were carried out with three different model materials (limestone, clinker, quartz) using the usually applied grinding aid. The flow properties were measured by the Jenike shear cell; the particle size distribution and specific surface area were measured by laser particle size analyser (Fritsch Analysette 22), grinding energy demand was measured with microcomputer controlled digital energy meter. It can be said that under certain measuring circumstances the influence of grinding aid on flow properties can be demonstrated by Jenike shear cell, so the grinding result is in correlation with the flow properties of grind.

The Scanning Electron Microscope – Mineral Liberation Analyzer (SEM-MLA) laboratory, as part of the Core Research Equipment and Instrument Training (CREAIT) network of laboratories at Memorial University, NL, Canada, has recently published efforts towards increasing the throughput of automated mineralogy systems by producing single-step trans-vertical moulds, rather than traditional 30 mm polished epoxy moulds. Due to the small particle size of iron ore grains in the -200 mesh size fraction (<75 µm), not all of the surface area on a mould is needed for measurement in achieving good statistical representation. In a new study, trimming of the excess area of a mould results in a smaller sample and increases the quantity of unique samples that can fit in a newly designed trans-vertical adapter for a FEITM MLA 650 field emission gun (FEG) scanning electron microscope. The complete analysis, using a newly designed sample block holder capable of holding 98 samples, required 57 hours of running time where each sample had an average of 33?400 particles measured and identified. The analysis was calibrated to allow for off-line discrimination of hematite/magnetite. The calculated Fe-assay values derived from MLA results were compared to those from bulk sample chemical assay. This shows the Fe assay having a correlation coefficient of >0.99 when the particle count is greater than 20?000. This study represents the most expedient method yet reported to prepare well-polished samples and analyse them in a timely manner that can allow for quicker results in process mineralogy.CITATION:Grant, D C, Goudie, D J and Baird, E, 2017. The banded nature of the quartz veins which form the Empire lode at the Golden Cross mine, is perhaps their most striking feature. Petrographic studies show that significant differences occur between the bands in terms of textures, quartz grain size, calcite, adularia and kaolinite content, and the form, concentration and mineralogy of sulfide phases.   The d18Oquartz values of individual bands within the vein material range from 7.3-10.9ë. Calculations show that the d18Oquartz values can be adequately explained by temporal variations in the system temperature, boiling and/or variations in the systems fluid/rock ratios.
