Sulfide chimney samples collected during the 1998 - 1999 R/V Atlantis û DSV Alvin 3 - 30 research cruise have been examined and classified into four types, based on common characteristics. Chimney morphology is the most important characteristic and resulted in the following groups: 1. flutes, 2. cones, 3. wide-flats, and 4. beehives. Other characteristics resulted in the classification of subgroups within the flute, cone and wide-flat groups. The combination of characteristics, including; the presence of an orifice, internal chimney fabrics, wall thickness, extent of weathering, and the presence of Alvinella worm casts, enable evolutionary trends between the different chimneys types to be established. These trends indicate that with time, flutes evolve from immature zoned chimneys with a central orifice and smooth thin-walls, into cone chimneys with thick walls and massive fabrics which have their orifices infilled by massive sulfides, and a rough exterior. Repeated mineralisation within, cones may result in the formation of wide-flat chimneys. Beehive chimneys can form at any time during chimney growth.

In coal mining, geophysical techniques have an established application in determining the location of seam boundaries ahead of the face so that underground mines can be planned to avoid any geological structures that might disrupt production. Geophysics can also be used in geotechnical studies to determine the in situ properties of the rock mass and the response of the rock mass to the mining. The use of geophysical logs and microseismic monitoring in these geotechnical applications are discussed in this paper.

SYMONS) IN PRESENTING THE MEDAL TO LAURENCE CHARLES BRODlE-HALL, C.M.G.The Institute Medal is awarded to a select band of people who have rendered great service to the mining industry and the community. Tonight it is my privilege to present the 1976 Institute Medal to one of our members, Mr L. C. Brodie-Hall, C.M.G.Laurence Charles Brodie-Hall, as chief executive in Western Australia for Western Mining Corporation Limited (WMC) from 1958 to his retirement in 1975, had a profound influence on the company's growth and development which had a significant influence on the prosperity of the State of Western Australia and, in turn, Australia.Following the company's decision in 1952 to diversify from gold mining, he took a leading part in the exploration and development of the bauxite deposits in the Darling Ranges by a subsidiary company, Western Aluminium N.L., and the subsequent formation of Alcoa of Australia Limited, the development of the first long term export contract for iron ore from Western Australia, the development of the nickel deposits at Kambalda and the subsequent establishment of a nickel refinery and nickel smelter in Western Australia.

The mesothermal quartz-scheelite lodes of the Wakamarina valley are one of twelve known mined or prospected gold-bearing areas in the Marlborough Schist. Recorded production was 556 kg gold, a little silver, and c. 390 t scheelite. 134 m of the 1800 m long Golden Bar reef are accessible in the No 2 level of the Golden Bar mine. The reef is a typical multi-banded mesothermal vein, mostly c. 1.75 m wide, enclosing narrow horses of schist country rock. Scheelite is sparsely distributed, and is more common in small veinlets in the hanging wall schist. The country rocks are textural zone I-1m schists of prehnite-pumpellyite to pumpellyite-actinolite metamorphic facies. Their geochemistry suggests they are part of the Caples Terrane, and of calc-alkaline volcanogenic arc origin. The associated Wakamarina Quartzite is strongly recumbent folded, and of the same metamorphic grade, with abundant pumpellyite, stilpnomelane, and garnet, presumably spessartine. Although it has geochemical signatures of a deep sea sediment, it is depleted in Cr and Cu, and greatly enhanced in K and Ti, when compared with a standard chert. It also has trace element characteristics of a calc-alkaline arc-related sediment. However, associated greenschist has MORB-like incompatible element chemistry. The Golden Bar reef lies within a steeply dipping, normal to transtensional dip-slip fault adjacent to a shallow-dipping mylonite shear zone, which, at least on the footwall side, is 040 m wide. The shear foliation has been severely dragged down to nearly parallel the Golden Bar reef within 1 m of the quartz lode. Preliminary structural analysis suggests that the shear zone is extensional. X-ray diffraction analyses of the wall rocks show a progressive depletion of amphibole, stilpnomelane, and pumpellyite towards the reef, and enhanced illite/muscovite and Kfeldspar adjacent to the lode, along with possible graphitic carbon within 10m. Two zones of intense quartz veining occur, one adjacent to the hanging wall for 12 m and one from 40 m outwards. Quartz vein systems in the country rock are complex and span from pre-schistosity to post-mylonite. They include multiple generations of quartz, actinolite, stilpnomelane, pumpellyite, albite, adularia, chlorites, illite/muscovite, calcite, and scheelite. Metal analyses across the Golden Bar reef showed gold values of 0.13.1 ppm, and low tungsten values, consistent with the observed sporadic scheelite occurrences. As and Sb are at background levels, but enhanced Cr (150 - 430 ppm) relative to the schists (30 - 41 ppm) suggests that the source hydrothermal fluids passed through and leached mafic to ultramafic rocks.

Southland contains over 70 per cent of New ZealandÆs recoverable coal resources, and an investigation into the potential effects of coal mining on SouthlandÆs water resources is therefore of interest. This paper investigates pit-lake water quality in relation to current mining activities within the sub-bituminous coal and lignite deposits of Southland.   Water quality data was collected from pit-lakes in sub-bituminous and lignite deposits from October 2005 to March 2006. After periods of settled weather, turbidity increased with depth at the sub-bituminous pit-lake (10 - 21 NTUs from 5 - 30 m). In the stratified sub-bituminous pit-lake in March 2006, heavy rainfall caused higher turbidity in the epilimnion than the top of the hypolimnion (20 NTU vs 13 NTU) reflecting surface water runoff (up to 1993 NTUs) and epilimnion mixing. In contrast, turbidity at the lignite sites was variable due to the shallowness of the lakes, but noticeable increases following disturbance and adverse weather were recorded. High turbidity at the sub-bituminous deposits was attributed to the presence of clay minerals such as kaolinite whereas turbidity at the lignite sites was more likely short term and a result of heavier minerals such as quartz.   Trace element concentrations at both sites were low when compared to mine waters in other coal areas in New Zealand and no samples exceeded ANZECC water quality trigger values for 80 per cent species protection. Pit-lake water pH levels were lower and more variable in the lignite deposit (4.18 - 7.30 vs 7.24 - 8.98 in the sub-bituminous deposits). In the lignite pit-lakes, higher concentrations of trace elements (eg Dissolved As - 0.034 ppm and Dissolved Mn - 1.09 ppm) and lower pH (ÿ4) were observed at the bottom of active pits compared to inactive pits. It is possible that quartz pebble conglomerates containing sulphide minerals within the lignite seams are responsible for this.   Further investigation into the mine waters, waste rock and lake sediments will help get a better understanding of the results observed and long term processes that occur.

Solid EnergyÆs Wangaloa open cast coal mine was operated between 1945 - 1989, and remained closed and disused until 2001 when SENZ initiated a mine rehabilitation programme. It is nearing the final stages of physical and environmental rehabilitation, aimed at creating an aesthetically pleasing and useful landscape. The final goals of these efforts are to produce an area, which has recreational and educational value. SENZÆs holistic approach to rehabilitation has been undertaken, treating the entire historical mine footprint instead of focusing only on those disturbed areas and the minimum range of issues just to meet with legal compliance. Rehabilitation at the site has included overburden modification with an emphasis on stability, removal and replacement of unhealthy and invasive plant species, and an AgLime amendment to alter soil pH conditions, which would support native plant species. To date, most ongoing activities relate to final planting and plant upkeep, and maintenance of the landform including ongoing erosion control, pest control, environmental monitoring, and research. Environmental quality concerns at the site may be treated by using a combination of methods, including regrading and capping of acid-generating pyrites, soil treatment with AgLime, and passive wetland treatment within existing water courses. Following major works, the mine site area may be opened to the public for recreational activities, interpretive displays on historical mining activities, and observation and appreciation for otherwise unseen geological features. SENZÆs holistic approach to reclamation, rather than treating minor issues, will result in the former mine site being transformed into an asset and the environmental and financial liability associated with the closed mine being discharged. Former mine sites can be turned from environmental liabilities with no recreational or public value (and potentially dangerous to life) into sites that can be safely used by the public for recreational and educational purposes.

Previous studies of alluvial gold in Otago and Southland placer deposits have suggested a gold-mercury association for some deposits derived from Caples Terrane schist, whereas alluvial deposits on Torlesse Terrane basement typically have no mercury. A regional study of gold from Otago Schist vein deposits from both Caples and Torlesse Terranes has revealed the presence of both Au-Ag and Au-Ag-Hg alloys in both terranes. Au-Ag alloy (3 - 4 wt per cent Ag) is typical for gold found in most Torlesse vein deposits, and Au-Ag-Hg alloy (3 - 8 wt per cent Ag, 2 - 8 wt per cent Hg) is found in many Caples vein deposits. Au-Ag-Hg alloys are not exclusive to the Caples Terrane, however, as Au-Ag-Hg alloys with up to 4 wt per cent Hg are found in vein material from the Torlesse-hosted, HydeMacraes Shear Zone. In addition, not all Caples-hosted deposits have a gold-mercury association; gold grains from the Carrick and Invincible gold fields have no detectable mercury. The present study characterises gold compositions from various hard-rock vein deposits and has potential for determining placer-source relationships.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Baiyinnuo’er Zn-Pb deposit is a typical skarn deposit in NE China. Skarn and orebodies mainly occur between different units of the Lower Permian Huanggangliang Formation carbonates-sandstone-mudstone or within the contact between intrusions and marble. Skarn minerals are dominated by prograde garnet and clinopyroxene, and the main ore minerals are sphalerite and galena. We conducted single fluid inclusion compositional studies using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry on clinopyroxene (pre-ore-stage mineral) and sphalerite and calcite (syn-ore-stage minerals). The results show that the Baiyinnuo’er fluids are distinctly different from basinal brine but similar to magmatic fluid, thereby indicating that the deposit has a dominantly magmatic origin. This interpretation has also been supported by the Cl/Br mole ratios, which remain stable (~500) in different fluid stages. The decreases for most of the elements in the fluid inclusions from pre-ore-stage clinopyroxene to syn-ore-stage sphalerite and calcite suggest that mixing with groundwater has occurred during mineralisation, with significant Zn, Pb and Ag deposition.CITATION:Shu, Q, Hammerli, J, Chang, Z, Lai, Y and Huizenga, J-M, 2015. Lightning Ridge, Australia, is the largest opal producing area in the world. Most opal is mined from shallow underground mines by individuals or small partnerships with the industry having been protected from large-scale development to date. The safety performance of opal mining has lagged both general mining industry standards and community expectations. The application of geotechnical analysis to the opal fields has the potential to considerably reduce injuries and fatalities. With consideration of the local culture, preliminary geotechnical analysis has been applied to some current methods of work utilised at Lightning Ridge. Practical solutions have been advocated and are presented in this paper. Improvements to safety generated by these practical solutions indicate that further geotechnical research at Lightning Ridge is warranted and would be beneficial.

Drilling at Ipswich during the last twelve years by the Queensland Department of Mines has proved large quantities of reserves which have assured the security of the field for many years to come. This is perhaps the greatest contribution to the development of the field since its discovery in 1827.The drilling campaign commenced in 1950 and by the end of 1961 comprised 242 holes totalling 180,220 ft.Intersections of formations and seams, accompanied by detailed surface mapping, led to more precise knowledge of the geology of the field than was previously possible, and clarified many problems of correlation. Productive formations are part of the Middle Triassic Ipswich Coal Measures, a 4,300 ft sequence of fresh-water sediments with some interbedded volcanics. They are overlain by the Upper Triassic Bundamba Group and the Lower Tertiary Booval Group.Reserves disclosed by drilling amount to 171,487,000 tons, comprising 109,407,000 tons "measured" and 62,080,000 tons "indicated". The security of these reserves encouraged many collieries to instal modern efficient mining machinery and washing plants.The climax of recent development of the resources of the field will be the commissioning in 1966 of a £33 million 360 MW power station in the Swanbank district which will consume 14 million tons of coal during its 30 year life and will have a peak demand of some 20,000 tons per week.Drilling is continuing and is expected to prove additional reserves which will justify further development of the field.INTRODUCTIONUntil 1949 there had been no concerted effort to test systematically the resources of the whole Ipswich field. Fifty two known holes totalling 30,500 ft had been drilled, eight of them by the Department of Mines, but because of poor core recovery and inadequate records most of them were of little use in a comprehensive assessment.Development of the field was being retarded by uncertainty regarding reserves and by the general state of the coal mining industry. The election of Donald Trump and the Brexit referendum herald a shift towards a tighter definition of economic value, at the expense of the broader value concept of sustainable development; as well as a rise of protectionism, reversing a long-term trend of globalisation. However, the situation is complex, especially over the longer term in which mine project development and exploration operates. The minerals sector should proceed with caution. A greater focus on the local impacts of mining may be strategically beneficial, not only to mitigate against a potential protectionist future, but also because sustainable development has become more ‘localist’ via the concept of ‘social licence to operate’, whilst globalisation also seems to provoke increased ‘localist’ sentiments (known as ‘glocalism’). Localist strategies, therefore, seem a good hedge against multiple political futures. By contrast, moving away from sustainable development appears strategically riskier. Not only are ‘unsustainable’ activities, such as pollution and civil rights infringements harder to reverse, but a movement towards a more sustainable global economy may already be predetermined, even if the journey there may seem oblique. Fine Gravity Separation in the Reflux Classifier, Exploiting a High Shear Rate, Laminar Flow Mechanism The Reflux Classifier is used in the gravity separation of particles over a broad range of particle sizes. The device consists of a fluidised bed zone, with a system of parallel inclined channels above. The inclined channels provide a significant hydraulic advantage over conventional fluidised beds via the so-called Boycott Effect (Boycott, 1920). This paper describes a new advance in fine gravity separation based on the high shear rate and laminar flow profile that arises when closely spaced inclined channels are deployed. As reported recently (Galvin et al, 2009a), a powerful density based separation mechanism develops from this arrangement, suppressing the effects of particle size. In this paper we focus on two areas, firstly the application of the separator in the laboratory for batch fractionation of particles of varying size and density to determine the grade recovery curve and hence the liberation, and secondly the step change in separation performance achieved on a continuous steady state basis when closely spaced inclined channels are used. The variation in the separation density with particle size decreases significantly, and the Ecarte Probable Error (Ep) remains at low levels over a broad size range.

A detailed analysis of faulting indicatcs that blocks of "greenstone" have been thrust beneath the southern end of the Mt. Isa orebodies.This "greenstone" basement is considered to be a major structural control in the localization of these orebodies.INTRODUCTIONThis paper is based on exploration carried out by Mining Corporation (Aust.) N.L. from 1956 to 1960 in the area immediately south of Mt. Isa, Queensland. During this period over 20,000 ft of diamond drilling was completed together with costeaning and geochemical exploration.Early in 1959, it became apparent that diamond drill information could not be correlated with the current geological concepts of this area and a detailed geological appraisal became necessary. In all, sixty square miles were mapped at a scale of 1 in. to 500 ft, using enlarged aerial photographs. All drill core was logged and sections re-interpreted.Professor K. C. Dunham of the University of Durham consulted on this project and contributed through valuable discussion. Dr. A. Day of the University of Sydney carried out a gravity survey in February 1960 and Dr. H. Wilshire of the same University undertook microscopic examination of rocks from the area. Certain sections of the area were investigated geochemically by Mr. K. K. Hughes of New Consolidated Gold Fields (Asia) Pty. Multi-episodic mineralisation is often characterised by different spatial trends exhibited by different generations of the mineralisation. The structural complexity of mineralisation together with the heterogeneous nature of the mineralised zones prevents unambiguous application of the conventional deterministic methodology for 3D constraining of the mineralised domains (ie conventional wireframing is ambiguous).A different approach, discussed in the present paper, includes a probabilistic definition of the domains encompassing one statistical population of the data. The domains are defined geostatistically using the indicator probability model. An indicator threshold is chosen for the definition of the high and low-grade domains. The spatial distribution of this indicator is then modelled by a variogram. The probability of exceeding the given grade threshold is than estimated by ordinary kriging for each modelled block. Blocks are then grouped according to their probability of exceeding the threshold and a continuous closed volume (domain) created from this likely patchy grouping using an appropriate structural model to fill the gaps). Methodology for the geostatistically assisted domaining is discussed in the paper. It is suggested that this technique represents an additional tool facilitating a structural interpretation of the mineralised zones.After the geostatistical domaining of the lode has been completed the grade within each of the domains is modelled using Uniform Conditioning method. Application of Uniform Conditioning for modeling the grade distribution has a significant advantage over linear methods (such as inverse distance or kriging) because Uniform conditioning enables estimation of local recoverable resources at different selective mining unit sizes that can be substantially smaller than the drilling density and are unable to be estimated directly.

Sustainable development is a critical discussion topic in the mining industry today. The topic is necessarily broad and complex, covering an entire spectrum of related areas, from geology to end-use products. The objective of this keynote address is to focus on the chemicals and chemistry aspects - especially research and technology transfer - in sustainable mineral processing. Chemicals came to play a critical role in mineral processing during the last century, and they will play an equally vital role in confronting the sustainability challenges of the 21st century, particularly in the areas of greener chemicals, water efficiency and water resource management; waste reduction and remediation; minimising environmental impact, safety and health risks (meeting and exceeding the requirements of regulations); energy efficiency; and converting mineral resources into reserves. This keynote address argues that the current research framework is no longer adequate to serve the goals of sustainable mineral processing. The problems studied are often too narrowly defined or irrelevant, while the research efforts are fragmented and the methods and approach employed are often too reductionistic to produce useful knowledge. A new framework for research is needed. This address further argues that a new framework based on a holistic or systems approach can best tackle the challenges of sustainable mineral processing. Central tenets of this approach include a recognition that, in complex systems, the behaviour of the whole system is more than the sum of the individual contributions, and that interactions occur in real time, often in subtle and complex ways. The focus is thus on the behaviour of the whole system. Indeed, a comprehensive understanding of the system through large-scale measurements should precede a study of parts or of idealised models of the complex system. The result will be a sound knowledgebase, better solutions to the challenges of sustainable development, and improved technology transfer. Developing such a framework will pose a formidable challenge, requiring significant time and effort as well as a confluence of diverse specialties and strategic collaboration. Fortunately, recent developments in the context of reagent optimisation provide us with a prototype of a holistic approach. We can also draw upon methodological innovations in the biological sciences, where the critical need for a systems approach is well recognised and significant advances have been made.

Gold was first discovered in the Shotover by Thomas Arthur in 1862. He left his job as a shearer and soon there were up to 3000 miners working over the length of the river. Some parts were extremely rich and a few early miners recovered as much as 300 ounces in a day. From these early days of hand working the operations progressed through to hydraulic elevating once water races and pipes were installed after the Skippers road was completed about 1890. The riverbed was worked in paddocks with .the gravel being sluiced to a central suction which elevated the material over a sluice box. Use of this system continued intermittently through until 1977 when Joe Schieb retired û the last of the hydraulic miners. Many bucket ladder dredges worked on the lower Shotover near Big Beach where the Sew Hoy family recovered a lot of gold. Just after 1900, at least three worked further upstream, one on the beach where Shotover Jet now operates and one further up below the Moonlight. All the sections for this were transported in over the Moonlight Track and the boiler, steam engine and bucket ladder are still sitting at the edge of the river. up near Maori Point a dredge operated from Dredge Slip upstream. Records are poor on these dredges but they all suffered from the frequent floods and large boulders which damaged the bucket line. The last dredging attempt was about 1930 when a suction dredge was constructed on Maori Beach. This failed as seems to be normal for most suction dredging ventures. The river can drop to very low levels in the middle of a dry summer, and in winter when the water is tied up in the mountains as ice and snow. During 1863 when heavy rain melted snow in the high country, the river rose 35 feet overnight and drowned many miners camped on the banks. The ever present risk of flooding dominates the method of working and plant design.
