In the presence of oxygen, galena is oxidized in an aqueous medium containing ammonium acetate in accordance with the following reaction: PbS + 1/2 0, + 2 NH~Ac -» PbAc, + So + 2 NH: + H2O. This reaction was studied in an autoclave under oxygen pressure by polarographic measurement of the concentration of lead ion in solution. Oxidation rate is parabolic. The reaction products are lead acetote and elemental sulfur, the latter forming a film on the galena crystal. Reaction kinetics appear to be determined by the diffusion of lead from the galena phase to the solution interface through the film of sulfur. RECENT applications of pressure leaching on a commercial scale have emphasized the metallurgical importance of the oxidation of sulfide minerals in aqueous media by oxygen under pressure. Research experience has shown that sulfates, thio-nates, and metal oxides are the products of humid oxidation of sulfide minerals in basic solutions. The metal oxides may be solubilized in the presence of a complexing ion.' Certain oxide minerals are also amenable to treatment by this type of oxidation.' Several kinetic studies have been made of reactions of this type. Stenhouse' found that pyrite (FeS?) oxidized in a sodium hydroxide solution to produce a soluble sulfate and an insoluble layer of iron oxide and that the kinetics of the reaction were controlled by oxygen diffusion through the oxide layer. Andersen' studied the oxidation of galena (PbS) in a sodium hydroxide solution under oxygen pressure. He found the lead and sulfur to be simultaneously oxidized to produce plum bite ions and sulfate ions, and that the reaction rate was proportional to the surface area of the galena. The kinetics appeared to be determined by the reaction of oxygen and water with the galena surface. In each of the above reactions the metal and sulfur components of the mineral were oxidized simultaneously and at equal rates. In the present study the alkaline medium has been replaced by an approximately neutral solution of ammonium acetate in which lead sulfate is soluble. Under the conditions no sulfate was produced and no sulfur could be detected in the solution. The metal component of the mineral was solubilized and the liberated sulfur remained as a film of elemental sulfur on the surface of the galena crystal. A kinetic study of this reaction was undertaken to establish the kinetic mechanism and to determine the rate controlling step. Specific reaction rates were determined by oxidizing crystals of galena of measured surface areas in an autoclave maintained at the desired temperature and oxygen pressure. The rate of reaction was followed by measuring the concentration of lead in the ammonium acetate solution with a cathode ray polarograph, employing stationary platinum electrodes incorporated in the autoclave. In 1946 Littlefield, Gray and Godbold published a thorough geologic description of the West Edmond Hunton Lime reservoir, located in Central Oklahoma, and discussion of its early performance.l They stressed implications of the nature of the reservoir rock on performance to be expected with production both by natural means and by pressure maintenance with gas injection. The essence of their analysis was that presence of an extensive interconnected system of fractures and solution channels constituting about 10 percent of the total reservoir void space in otherwise very low permeability reservoir rock would result in severe channeling of naturally encroaching water or injected gas through the fractures with little or no benefit to ultimate recovery of oil. Considerations were in progress to unitize the reservoir for pressure maintenance by gas injection. Some other engineers involved in the project had considerably different opinions at the time regarding continuity of fractures and regarding effects of such fractures on performance. The field was unitized Oct. 1, 1947. Subsequently, pilot gas injection tests were conducted in four areas of the field; large scale waterflooding was conducted in two parts of the field in the Bois d'Arc or Upper Hunton; and pilot waterflooding was conducted in the Chimney Hill or Lower Hunton. Full scale water-flooding is now in progress in the Chimney Hill section where it is oil productive. The primary purpose of this paper is to divine some of the secrets of this reservoir through analysis of all aspects of its performance, with the hope that it will be of help to engineers and operators in developing and operating other low permeability fractured reservoirs. In part, this considers variance of actual performance from some widely used conventional reservoir engineering assumptions. For brevity, other aspects of unit operation and its benefits to the owners are not discussed. Oil and Gas in Place For unit participation, net pay in the Bois #Arc defined by the gross SP anomaly on electric logs totalled 2,100,000 acre-ft in the 30,000-acre reservoir. Development of West Edmond predated modem logging techniques that now would be used to determine "net" or "productive" pay. In Fig. 1 this log pick is compared with detailed core analysis and core descripfion by Littlefield et a1.l for one well identified as A on the index map in Fig. 2. Not all of the gross Bois #Arc section had oil staining, but all cores with measureable intergranular permeability were stained. (The committee selection of the Bois d'Arc SP interval also includes the Frisco section as identified from cores by Littlefield.) The Bois d'Arc is oil productive throughout the entire 600-ft monoclinal accumulation from the eastern upstructure erosional pinchout to the west-side oil-water contact. REPORTS have been made at different times on the progress of water encroachment in the Frontier sands in the Salt. Creek oil field, Natrona county, Wyoming. All previous reports have, -however, been largely based on the position of water in the sands as determined by various physical tests. Subsequent information has been secured through a preliminary investigation of the porosity, grain size and degree of saturation of the Frontier sands. Also, a closer differentiation has been made between the waters encountered incident to the production of oil by means of chemical analysis. In view of the more recent developments there has been a need of a water encroachment map of the first Wall Creek based on a field survey and additional information acquired since the water encroachment map of the sand of 1926, by J. S. Ross and E. W. Henderson, petroleum engineers of the U. S. Geological Survey. The present report is confined to a study of the first Wall Creek sand and was written in connection with the preparation of the map, showing water encroachment in this sand. The first Wall Creek sand was the discovery sand in the field, the first well having been drilled in 1908. Its thickness averages 120 ft. and, varies between 90 and 160 ft. The sand is in the Colorado group of the Upper Cretaceous series and is further considered as a part of the Frontier formation found in other parts of Wyoming.

In this paper, a new technique developed to analyze two-dimensional nonhomogeneous models is described. A simple three-layered medium with a circular hole centrally located in the intermediate layer is considered. The layered sheet is loaded uniaxially perpendicular to the stratification. The Young's modulus of the intermediate layer is lower than that of the outer layers. The stress distribution around the circular hole in a stratified medium is significantly different when compared to the case of a continuous homogeneous medium. The distribution depends upon the ratio of the height of the intermediate layer and the hole diameter. A comparison of stress distribution and procedures for preparation and testing of the model are given. The potential of the technique is outlined. In the process of applying the techniques of stress analysis to problems of rock mechanics, the recent discernible trend has been to postulate highly idealized models of physical situations. As new techniques have been developed, more complicated models have been conceived to simulate mote accurately the physical environment to which the analysis results are eventually applied. In this investigation, a new technique is developed to analyze two-dimensional nonhomogeneous models. The technique is used to determine the stress concentration around a circular hole in a soft material overlain and underlain by a hard material. In mining practice, such situations arise commonly in coal deposits and frequently in bedded or vein-type metallic mineral deposits. DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM A plate, consisting of three layers with a circular hole in the intermediate layer, is loaded uniaxially, Fig. 1. The variable in the experimental investigation is the height of the intermediate layer, H. The diameter of the hole, D, is kept constant. The stress concentration factors around the periphery of the hole, for various values of H/D, are evaluated using the technique of photoelasticity, Table I. TECHNIQUE OF EXPLORATION Photoelastic analyses of composite models have hitherto been limited to the study of lap and butt joints between glued metals and dissimilar materials.1-3 In mining, Haber and Oudenhoven used composite models to study the stress distribution around a circular hole in two-layered media and the behavior of elastic liners in shallow underground openings.4-5 They used the stress freezing technique devised by Dally et a1.6 The procedure used in this investigation is outlined below: Casting of Layer A: Flat sheets of plastic were cast in a silicon-coated mold using Araldite 502 with hardener 951 in the ratio of 100:8 by weight. CAPTAIN JOHN H. BALLAMY John H. Ballamy, Captain on the Regimental Staff of the 103d Engineers, was killed near Fismes, on August 9, 1918. Captain Ballamy was born at Plymouth, Pa., in 1886 and graduated from the High School of that town in 1903. In the following year he began work as a coal miner, and at the same time began the study of mining engineering in the evening and any other spare time. He continued this diligent and energetic practice for many years. For sixteen years he continued in the employment of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad Company's coal mining department, first as a practical miner, next as rodman on the survey corps, of which he soon became chief, then draftsman and mining engineer in the company's office. In January, 1916, he was promoted to the position of district engineer in charge of mining engineering work. He became a member of this Institute in September, 1917. CAPTAIN JOHN H BALLAMY. Captain Ballamy's military experience began at the same time as his engineering practice. He was a charter member of Company A, Engineers, N. G. P., which was organized ten years ago. He saw service on the Mexican border as First Lieutenant of this Company, and remained in that position until November, 1916. In July, 1917, he was again called into service and was sent to Camp Hancock, Ga., with the 103d Regiment of Engineers. Before joining this regiment he attended a school for officers at Fort Sill, Okla., where he received special training in field fortifications. In December, 1917, he was commissioned Topographical Captain on the Regimental Staff, and in April, 1918, preceded his regiment by about six weeks to France, where he again attended an officers' training school. He rejoined his regiment on July 15, near Chateau Thierry and was killed near Fismes on August 9, 1918.

Minerals have played a prominent role in the affairs of man and nations since time immemorial but with the advent of the industrial revolution, expanding use of the products of the mineral kingdom became synonymous with the material progress of mankind. Individuals and business groups have recognized this fact so have been aggressive in searching for and utilizing mineral resources, with notable success. Indeed, their achievements are primarily responsible for the present Machine Age. On the other hand, until recently the body politic has failed to grasp fully the essentiality of minerals although, at times, access to mineral supplies has been an important factor in the political maneuvers of nations. This chapter is concerned primarily with the broader political and economic relationships of mineral resources to the world economy, and with the internal and external actions of nations in the field of minerals. Many factors that condition the mineral economy of regions and the world as a whole, influence the internal and external affairs of individual nations. The more important of these are: 1. The nature of man's dependence on minerals. 2. The problems resulting from the unique characteristics of mineral occurrence. 3. Geopolitical concepts. 4. Minerals and world power. Actions of individual nations affecting their mineral economy seek two basic objectives: 1. Attainment and maintenance of prosperity. 2. Military security. Other objectives may be cited but on careful analysis they become integral parts or extreme phases of the two points noted above. For example, the twentieth century aggressions of the USSR, Germany, Italy, and Japan might be considered as direct bids for world power but they also can be interpreted as exaggerated or mistaken efforts toward military security and peacetime prosperity. Similarly, trade barriers, nationalization of industries, foreign exchange manipulations, taxation, monopolistic prac-

Successful hydraulic pressure treatment of oil and gas wells that have long producing intervals, multiple pay zones, fluid thief zones, or natural or induced fractures has long been a serious problem plaguing the petroleum industry. High fluid-injection rates, straddle packers, ball sealers, and either liquid or solid additives to the treating fluids are being used to cope with this difficult and costly problem.l-6 The use of ball sealers and straddle packers is limited, in practice, to wells that have been completed with perforated cemented casings or liners. Well stimulation with ball sealers and straddle packers is usually successful as long as the cement remains competent. The other techniques of diverting are used with all types of completions. However, there are two significant disadvantages of the high rate method: excessive horsepower requirements, and the need of large treating-fluid volume. Consequently, most well stimulation techniques that involve diverting depend upon ball sealers or granular materials. Liquid diverting agents, and some of the solid ones in use today, frequently will cause formation damage. On the other hand, the most popular particulate diverting agents often are so soluble in the treating fluid that they become largely ineffective; their particle size is severely reduced as they dissolve while being transported through thousands of feet of pipe to the formation face down hole. In our attempts to deal with the shortcomings of these diverting agents, we experimented with a large variety of potentially suitable deformable materials the solubility of which could be controlled. Following are the criteria for the diverting agent sought: 1. The material must be effective in reducing fluid loss to thief zones, including existing fractures and very high permeability layers in the formation to be pressure treated. 2. The material must have enough strength to bridge under the treating pressure. 3. The material must be insoluble or slowly soluble in the treating fluids so that the particles retain sufficient size to be effective after they reach the formation face. 4. The material must be completely soluble in the produced oil or condensate liquid so that it can be removed readily; it must not cause formation damage. A number of products consisting of various polymers blended with waxes and other solid hydrocarbons were examined. All these materials satisfied the criteria for a diverting agent and also exhibited some degree of plastic deformability. On the basis of initial tests of strength and hardness, several blends of wax and polymer were selected for extensive testing in the laboratory and the field. These compounds have congealing temperatures ranging from 140 to 190F; they are insoluble in water and soluble in oil. They conformed, therefore, to the criteria specified for a theoretically superior diverting agent. Laboratory and field tests were conducted using these wax-polymer materials to demonstrate that the use of a deformable diverting agent can significantly improve fluid diverting performance. Apparatus for maintaining constant — but adjustable — pulp level and rate of froth removal are described. The results of preliminary experiments into the effect of scraping speed on the rate of solid and liquid recovery with a semi-batch system are presented. Glass spheres restricted to a narrow size range is the solid under investigation. Graphical methods for estimating the mass of recoverable material and the zero error are given. The semi-batch procedure1 is extensively used in laboratory flotation testing, though the method is subject to variability of moderate severity. Raffinot2 concluded from a statistical study of the difference between replicate tests, that the ptincipal source of errot was the test itself and not sampling or chemical analysis. These differences can be ascribed principally to changes in pulp volume and reagent concentration, and uncontrolled rate and depth of scraping. Semi-batch testing has been criticized1 on these grounds as a means of investigating flotation kinetics. This paper discusses and describes modifications to laboratory flotation equipment which reduce the number of manual operations and lead to improved control. Kinetic studies were the primary reason for developing the apparatus described. It should, however be a useful aid in normal flotation testing. Some preliminary results of experiments are presented.

The competitive position of producers of industrial minerals depends upon the delivered price of their product. Freight charges are a major factor in the sales to consumers. A comparison of freight rates on movements of limestone and silica rock in the Pacific Northwest shows a wide variance in mills per ton mile for like hauls, thereby favoring some localities over others. Introduction: Sooner or later the potential miner of industrial minerals reaches the conclusion that of the various factors he must consider, the marketing of his product is. the most important. The sooner he realizes this the better, as successful industrial mineral producers .will confirm. Herein lies a difference between i.ndustria1 mineral mining and metal mining. Often in the latter, technical problems of mining or concentrating are equal to or even surpass those of marketing. This is not meant to imply that there are no problems in mining and beneficiation of industrial minerals, but these usually are outweighed by the problem of marketing. Recentlv. an official of a nationally known corporation :i the elecl.ro-metallurgical industry made an industrial mineral survey in the Pacific Northwest. In the course of his investigation he interviewed producers and potential producers of the various industrial minerals scheduled for use in the plant now being constructed in this area. He stated that he was interested in only three factors: namely, (1) Can your product meet our specifications? (2) Are you able to supply our tonnage requirements? and (3) What will be the delivered price? If there are several sources of supply of sufficient grade and tonnage, as is often the case in the Northwest, then the third factor becomes the important and deciding one. While industrial minerals are usually sold f.0.b. cars with the freight being paid by the buyer, it is the delivered and riot the f.0.b. price that determines the competitive position of the producer and his industrial mineral product. Unfortunately for both the consumers and producers of industrial minerals in the Northwest, the sources are generally a considerable distance from the markets. This necessitates long rail hauls, for which transportation charges make up the largest share of the delivered cost and the delivered price of the product. Is it any wonder then, that rail rates play such an important part in the marketing of industrial minerals? In order to sell his product, the producer must be able to deliver to the market at a competitive price. It must be remembered that his largest cost factor is rail transportation, and that he is limited to markets that he can reach competitively. Since the cost of rail transportation is so important, let us compare various freight rates in the Northwest and attempt to determine their influence on marketing. A study of all rates on all industrial minerals transported in this area, is beyond the scope of this paper. For the purposes of comparison, let us consider limestone (broken, crushed, or ground), and silica rock. These are widely used industrial minerals, and are carried by several different rail routes from.the sources of supply to the centers of consumption in the Pacific Northwest. Markets and Sources of Supply: Limestone has a number of uses in western Oregon and Washington. Among them are agricultural lime for the soils of the Willamette Valley and southwestern Washington; paper rock for the mills in such cities as West Linn, Oregon City, Newberg, St. Helens, and Salem, Oregon, and Camas and Everett, Wash.; chemical and metallurgical-grade limestone for the metallurgical plants centering around Portland, and the Tacoma-Seattle areas'; and sugar rock for the sugar refineries at Toppenish, Wash., and Nyssa, Oregon. FIVE days, extending from Monday, Feb. 18 to Friday, Feb. 22, inclusive, will be required for the annual meeting this year. The first fours days will be devoted to reading and discussion of papers, general and committee business meetings, two lectures, luncheons, dinners and all the pleasures of a big, general reunion. The fifth day will be given over to an all-day excursion for both men and women by special train to West Point, in celebration of the birthday of the first President of the United States. Washington having been an engineer and now after one hundred and thirty-one years the country having selected as President another engineer in the person of Herbert Hoover, our own past president and honorary member, it is proposed to celebrate with a good old-fashioned picnic and inspect the school. The authorities at the Military Academy have undertaken to welcome the engineers and do whatever they may to make our pilgrimage notable. Other social features planned for the week are numerous. Luncheon will be served as usual at the building each day of the meeting to all members and guests. This year a very nominal charge will be made, primarily to overcome deficits due to irregular attendance. Monday noon, the Non-metallic Minerals Committee will lunch at the Engineers' Club and in the evening the Milling Methods Committee will dine there. The Annual Smoker will be held at Hotel Astor after dinner. Professional entertainment of high order is promised, but not too much to interfere with the numerous group reunions that characterize this func- tion.

DURING my recent extended visit to Australia and New Zealand, these notes on oil and gas prospecting in that part of the world were compiled from recent reports-press and government, from conversation with one of the financial leaders in the search for oil, and from personal observation of operations of the principal importers, blenders, and distributors of oil products; also from the astonishing testimony given by them to the Petrol Commission. Australia and New Zealand have practically no petroleum production beyond a few thousand gallons a year from wells in the latter Dominion. This paper presents a systematic method for determining the forces on a simplified roller bit. The kinematics of an actual roller bit drilling in rock is complex; nevertheless, it is desirable to obtain an accurate analytical model.. As a preliminary study, the roller bit is represented here by a simple two-dimensional bit and the rock by a Coulomb plastic material. Results from previous work, plus additional assumptions, are incorporated into a computer program to determine the forces required to move the bit in a specified manner. Example problems are worked by use of this program. By studying similar drilling problems and by supporting laboratory work, one could eventually obtain an accurate analytical model for drilling by an actual roller bit. This could lead to the compilation of a catalog of results that, in turn, would allow selection of the optimum drill bit for any given situation. INTRODUCTION

J. Richter and D. Schulze (Deutschen Akademie der Wissenschafte zu Berlin)—Introduction. In a recent paper R. G. Garlick and H. B. Probst reported on experimental results of investigations of room-temperature slip in zone-melted tungsten single crystals.17 In the paper it was pointed out that slip lines could be detected with an optical microscope only after about 10 pet plastic strain of the crystal. In our investigations we could observe slip lines in tungsten single crystals of defined orientations already with an elongation of 0.02 to 0.03 pet.18"9 Experimental Technique and Results. The tungsten single crystals were produced from 4 to 5 mm sintered rods* as starting material by electron- beam zone melting. With single-zone-pass melting a speed of 0.5 mm per min was used, while three-pass melting could be handled at a speed of 3 mm per min. Crystal axis orientations were located in the shaded area of the stereographic triangle, see Fig. 6. Orientation 1 is located at about 18 deg and orientation 2 at about 5 deg on the great circle from [011] to [ill]. This corresponds approximately to the orientations P and M referred to by Garlick and Probst. Our single crystals had a length of about 70 mm and were profiled solely by electrolytic means, leaving grip ends at both ends of the crystals. Between the latter, a cylindrical crystal of 45 to 50 mm length and about 2.4 mm diam was obtained. The crystals were deformed at room temperature in a commercial tensile-testing machine to obtain a strain of 0.02 to 5 pet. The average strain rate e = eP/t for all tensile tests amounted to approximately 10 -6 to 10-5 per sec, with ep representing plastic strain and t the duration of applied stress. In Fig. 7 a crystal is shown elongated by 0.03 pet. The picture was obtained by means of an optical microscope. Figs. 8 and 9 give electron-microscopic pictures of slip lines of crystals elongated by 0.07 and 1.1 pet, respectively. For crystals with the orientation 1, see Fig. 6, only the two main slip systems (101)[111] and (110)[111] were found. With the crystals of group 2 the two main slip systems are again evident, with

A unique method of measuring weight loss as a function 3 of time, with a sensitivity of 10-5 grams, while leaching copper minerals with a flowing acid leach solution has been developed. Kinetic results obtained coupled with visual and microprobe analyses show topochemical reaction for the leaching of chrysocolla with sulfuric acid. The kinetics follow a shrinking core model and show ion diffusion through a product layer, chemical reaction at the unreacted core interface and mass transfer through the boundary layer as being important.

THE death of Professor Blake removes the oldest of American economic geologists and mining engineers, and deprives this Institute of one of its, earliest and most illustrious members. To many of us it brings a personal loss also, the loss of a friend. William Phipps Blake was born June 21, 1826, in New York City. -His father, Elihu Blake, was a surgeon-dentist of eminence, a direct descendant of William Blake, who settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony about 1630. He was prepared for college at private schools in New York, and entered the Sheffield School of Yale, where he was graduated as Ph.B. in the chemical course, class of 1852, the first graduating-class of the institution. In the same year he became chemist and mineralogist of the New Jersey Zinc Co., and chemist of chemical works at Baltimore, Md. In 1853, lie started the Department of Mineralogy of the World's Fair at New York City. In 1854, 1855 and 1856, he was mineralogist and geologist of the United States Pacific Railroad Surveys of Williamson, Pope, and Whipple, and for the War Department at Washington. His writings, during this period comprise reports on the geology and mineralogy of California and other parts of the Southwest, and constitute well nigh the earliest scientific accounts of the regions described. One of them. was a translation of the Resume and Field Notes of Jules Marcou, of Whipple's expedition. From 1856 to 1859, he was engaged in explorations of the geology and mineral deposits of North Carolina, :and other parts of the country. In 1859, he became editor and proprietor of The Mining Magazine. This was a monthly periodical, founded in 1853 by W. J. Tenny, who conducted it until 1858, when it passed into the hands of Thomas McElrath, a New York publisher, and appeared in May of that year as The Mining and Statistic Magazine, with the name of

Most western industrial sands are feldspathic and contain feldspars in variahle amounts. A few deposits will show alumina contents of less than one per cent while others will contain over twelve per cent alumina. Some industries are not especially concerned with the amount of contained feldspar but are interested only in color and in size gradations. Other industries, however, are very much interested in alumina content and set up quite rigid specifications as to this content. Several western plants are beneficiating crude sands both to reduce the iron content and to control the feldspar content. At present, most of these plants are using flotation processes for both controls although a few plants do use magnetic separators for the reduction of iron content. Some work has also been done with electrostatic separators for the feldspar-quartz splits. The Sand Division of Del Monte Properties Company, Pebble Beach, California, has been operating a flotation plant for iron removal and the separation of quartz and feldspar since 1950. As mentioned before, control of alumina, especially in the quartz product, is very important. Some users require an alumina content of less than two per cent and others will demand a product of less than one per cent Al2,O3,. The standard Quinolate method for determining alumina is lengthy and time consuming. The HF —H2SO4 evaporation step is especially critical and, if forced, spattering is apt to occur with a resulting loss of sample. Standard procedure is to evaporate to dry ness overnight at a low temperature. Even with forcing under optimum conditions the procerlnre will take two or three hours to complete. A new method has been developed which allows an alumina determination to be made, in 10 or 15 minutes, on a sample of the quartz product as it is being produced. This pocedure, although simply an approximation, has been most helpful in showing whether or not the product being formed is meeting specifications. This procedure has also allowed a great reduction in samples formerly taken and analysed by the orthodox method. Whether a sample assays 1.75% A12O3, or 1.95% .41,0, is not so important as the fact that it is below the allowable maximum of 2.00%. Similar thinking would apply to products required to contain less than 1.00% A1,0,. The step by step procedures for the method are as follows: 1. Collect sample, drain or filter, and dry. 2. Split sample through standard Jones sample cutter to quarter or eighth sample, depending on size of original sample taken, then split down to about 5 grams through Sepor micro-splitter. 3. Screen through 50 mesh sieve (U.S. Series) and reject undersize. 4. Weigh out 2 grams and place in platinum crucible. 5. Etch with 3-5 mls 38.40% HF for 1 minute at room temp. 6. Decant and wash. 7. Stain for two minutes in same crucible with a 1% water solution of Nigrosene dye. 8. Decant and wash well. 9. Dry.
