A present the colleges and universities are struggling to meet the responsibilities placed upon them by the return of the veterans from the armed forces to the educational institutions as well as the youth graduating from the high schools. The problems of meeting these responsibilities are complex and upon the shoulders of the educational administrators lies much of the burden. One of those educators who is in the midst of this situation is James Rowland Cudworth, dean of the College of Engineering of the University of Alabama and Chairman of the Mineral Industry Education Division, AIME, both for 1946 and 1947. He was born at Norwich, Conn., on Sept. 23, 1897, and like his father before him went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received his Bachelor's degree in 1921. His studies at MIT were mainly in the fields of geological and mining engineering. Why a New Englander studies mining is anybody's guess, but it may be due to a love of traveling to far places which so many New Englanders do. After graduating tinder the famed Waldemar Lindgren. Jim trekked to Mexico where he worked at Pachuca for the Cia. Real del Monte and at Charcas with the American Smelting and Refining Co.

WITHOUT QUESTION the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania contains the most remarkable coal deposits of the whole world. Within its borders ,are to be found excellent coals ranging in rank from the high volatile bituminous of the western part of 'the state through the low volatile or semi-bituminous of central Pennsylvania to that aristocrat of solid fuels, anthracite, found in the East. . . . But while other states and even the Federa1 Government have recognized the needs of the coal industry, Pennsylvania has not. Though bituminous coal represents one of the most important industries in the state, far more important in annual productive wealth than agriculture, for example, hundreds, of thousands of dollars have been spent on agricultural research whereas little or nothing has been spent on coal investigation.

F. B. Foley—The use of data published by Wever and Jellinghaus in 1931 to fix boundaries of the sigma phase in the Fe-Cr system, in the face of the author's own references to the suggestions of Bradley and Goldschmidt, Aborn and Bain, and Hougardy that the phase is much more extensive, and the very much more accurate work, which weighs heavily in favor of these suggestions, of Cook and Jones, published in 1943 and evidently disregarded by the authors, makes their derived ternary diagram, especially fig. 15 for 400°C, quite inaccurate on the Fe-Cr side and affects the extent of phase boundaries in the most controversial and important part of this ternary system. In commercial Fe-Ni-Cr alloys the occurrence of sigma has been observed time and time again at lower chromium contents than that of the 24 pct Cr, 16 pct Ni, 60 pct Fe alloy which is the lowest permitted by fig. 15 of practically carbonless metal. Newel1 reports sigma in 27 pct Cr-Fe even with some carbon present to be one of the greatest detriments to its extensive application, whereas Pugh and Nisbet set a low limit of 36 pct Cr for sigma in the binary Fe-Cr system. J. J. Heger—The diagrams presented by the authors do not agree with observations made on commercial Fe-Cr and Fe-Cr-Ni alloys, nor do they agree with two recent investigations made on the Fe-Cr and the Fe-Cr-Fe systems. I refer first to the investigation made by Cook and Jones1' on the sigma region of the Fe-Cr system. On the basis of their results which were published in 1943, Cook and Jones established new boundary limits for the sigma and the alpha plus sigma regions. These new limits have been accepted and are incorporated in the Fe-Cr diagram that appears in the 1948 edition of the Metals Handbook. This diagram is shown here as fig. 34. As will be noted, the boundary limits of the alpha plus sigma region in this diagram extend to much lower chromium contents than do those in the diagram presented by the authors in fig. 2. These new limits indicate that sigma phase should form in an Fe-Cr alloy containing 26 pct Cr, and experience with commercial alloys confirms this finding. Indeed, recent studies on a commercial Fe-Cr alloy containing 17 pct Cr have shown sigma phase to be stable in this alloy at 550°C. I recognize that the authors' work did not include studies on the sigma region; however, I believe this is a serious omission because sigma phase may profoundly affect the physical properties of these alloys and should be evaluated in any investigation which attempts to relate physical properties to the equilibrium diagram. The second investigation to which I refer is that made on the Fe-Cr-Ni system by Rees, Burns, and Cook,'' who used pure alloys and employed heating 17 W. P. Rees, B. D. Burns, and A. 3. Cook: Journal Iron and Steel Institute. (July 1949) 162, Part 3. p. 325. times that extend to 200 days. These investigators published their results in July 1949 and from these results constructed isothermal sections at 800" and 650°C. The isothermal section at 650°C is shown here as fig. 35. This diagram indicates sigma phase should form in a pure 18 pct Cr-8 pct Ni alloy. Although sigma phase has not been observed after 10,000 hr at 1200°F in commercial 18-8 alloys containing carbon and nitrogen, it has been observed under the same conditions in 18-8 alloys modified with titanium and columbium, both of which serve to reduce the effect of carbon and nitrogen. This section and the one at 800°C suggest that the constant iron sections which are presented by the authors, should be considerably altered, if they are to represent an accurate picture of the system. A few of the suggested alterations are as follows: In fig. 9, the section at 50 pct Fe, the gamma plus sigma region should be widened, not narrowed at 800" and 650°C. In fig. 10, the section at 60 pct Fe, the gamma plus sigma region should be widened at 800° and 650°C. In fig. 11, the section at 70 pct Fe, an alpha plus sigma, an alpha plus gamma plus sigma, and a gamma plus sigma region should be added. In fig. 12, the section at 80 pct Fe, the alpha plus gamma region should be widened at 800°C. In fig. 13, the section at 90 pct Fe, the alpha plus gamma region should be widened at 650° and 800°C. Undoubtedly, the chief reason for the discrepancies between the authors' data and those of Rees, Burns, and Cook is that the authors did not employ long enough heating times to allow for transformation. In this connection, I wish to warn that transformations in these alloys, particularly transformations at temperatures below 800°C, are extremely sluggish and may require a year or more to approach completion. Therefore, unless extremely long heating times are employed or steps are taken to accelerate these transformations by such means as mechanical working, the results will not yield an accurate picture of the alloy system. Certainly, an accurate picture is needed for the development of better high-temperature materials. E. J. Dulis-The purpose of this work is not clear. If an improvement of the ternary equilibrium diagram of the Fe-Cr-Ni system was wanted, it seems logical that testing techniques superior to those previously used would be a prime requirement. To approach equilibrium in this system, long holding times are needed; a fact established long ago but apparently ignored by the present authors, who used the continuous heating and cooling tests in equilibrium studies. It is now recognized that several important types of reactions in metallic systems proceed by the formation of nuclei and the growth of these nuclei. The process of freezing is a simple example of this, as Tammann pointed out years ago.1 Tammann held that the rate of freezing is determined by a rate of nucleation, expressed as the number of nuclei formed per unit volume of unfrozen liquid per second, and a rate of growth of these nuclei, expressed as the linear rate of radial growth in units of length per second. For isothermal freezing the conception is simple; for ordinary freezing, extending over a range of temperature, it is not as simple, for the values of the two constants must change with change in temperature. There is ample evidence that the postulated mechanism is correct even though a quantitative derivation of the rate of isothermal or of ordinary freezing in terms of the two constants has been lacking. In recent years other reactions have been found to proceed in a similar fashion. It has been well established, particularly by Bain12-8 that the formation of pearlite from the eutectoid decomposition of the solid solution austenite proceeds in such a way, and Polanyi and Schmid, Tammann and Crone, Karnop and Sachs, and others9-11 have shown that the process of recrystallization proceeds in a similar way. Isothermal reaction rates have been determined for eutectoid decomposition by a number of investigators. Bain's2-8 work on the formation of pearlite from austenite is especially valuable in this respect—the type of isothermal reaction curve obtained, as illustrated in Fig. 13, showed an initial slow rate, accelerating to an intermediate maximum rate which then decelerated to the completion of the reaction; similar curves have been obtained by Wever and his collaborators.12 Other eutectoid decompositions show similar behavior: for example, the decomposition of the beta eutectoid in the copper-aluminum system, studied by Smith

THE annual meeting of the Auxiliary to the A. I. M. E. was marked by the most delightful cordiality and warm spirit of welcome on the part of the members of the New York Section and an equally charming spirit of cooperation and appreciation on the part of the visitors. On Monday Mrs. Ernest H. Wolfes and Mrs. Charles A. Bohn had charge of registration and most efficiently .provided everyone with the necessary tickets and badges. The reception hall and regisfration booth were gay with beautiful flowers that reflected the welcoming spirit one found there. The smooth efficiency with which the whole program ran was due largely to the tireless efforts of Mrs. Donald M. Liddell and Mrs. Louis D. Huntoon, joint chairmen of the Ladies' Committee, and Miss Margaret Callow, chairman of the Junior Committee. After registering, the ladies proceeded to- the fifth floor, where they had luncheon with the members of the A. I. M. E. On that day Mrs. W. H. Bassett and Mrs. Lucius W. Mayer were the hostesses.

It is pointed out that the current concept of pore size distribution is not unequivocally defined and that different methods aiming at a determination of such a distribution therefore do not lead to the same results. A pore size distribution should not be based on the idea that a core should, under all circumstances, behave as a bundle of straight non-interconnected capillaries of the same pore size distribution. This is illustrated by calculations and experiments on the displacement of miscible liquids. INTRODUCTION The introduction of the concept of pore size distribution has been an attempt to characterize the intricate geometry of the flow channels in porous media. As pores in a porous medium are interconnected it is impossible to describe exactly what is meant by a "pore" and, therefore, the term pore size distribution requires further amplification. In the visual method for the determination of pore size distribution "the pore" is considered to be the hole between the grains as observed on thin sections or on a polished surface of the rock under a microscope. In all other presently known methods,1,2 a displacement process is studied and it is ascertained what as- semblaae of straight cylindrical capillaries would show the same behavior. The distribution of the capillary diameters of this assemblage is said to represent the size distribution of the pores of the actual porous medium. From the foregoing it is already apparent that it is useless to try to decide which process or which method of investigation leads to a "correct" pore size distribution. To illustrate this further a displacement process in which a fluid is displaced by another miscible with it will be discussed and the results will be interpreted in terms of a pore size distribution. DISPLACEMENT EXPERIMENTS WITH MISCIBLE LIQUIDS OF NEARLY IDENTICAL VISCOSITY AND DENSITY Interpretation in the Form of a Pore Size Distribution If distilled water is displaced from a homogeneous unconsolidated sand pack by, for instance, a dilute solution of NaCI, the breakthrough recovery i.e., the amount of distilled water produced at the moment the first trace of NaCl can be detected in the effluent water, is between 95 and 100 per cent of the pore volume of the pack. This result can be understood by following in imagination the course of one particle of the liquid. Imagine a length, ?l, at the end of which a liquid particle has an independent chance of a renewed choice of pores of different diameters. IN making a glass model of mine-workings, each mine will present some little individualities, to meet which will call for the exercise of special ingenuity. Having made several models, I offer the following details of the model of the Montana-Tonopah mine-workings, believing that with small changes for different conditions the method described can be successfully used in making a glass model of the workings of any mine. The model, Fig. 1, has the top, one end, and the front removed. The case is made of kiln-dried pine, painted with several coats of dead-white paint. It is made to take sheets of glass 24 by 42 in. in size, and is 18 in. high, the workings shown being on a scale of 1 in. = 40 ft., or 4800 : 1 scale. The base is made of four pieces of 2-in. material, well pinned and glued together. The back, of material 1 in. thick, is secured rigidly to the base by screws and countersinking. The four posts, 1.5 in. square, are so cut that. the front and two ends of the model fit in flush with the outside edges of the posts. The top rails, 1 in. square, are fastened rigidly to the front and back posts by means of small iron braces. The ends, front, and top of the case are of 0.5-in. material; the ends and front are held in place at the bottom by pegs fitting into the base ; at the top the ends are held by buttons and the front by cupboard-hooks on the inside. Hinged hasps on the cover, fitting over staples in the end-pieces, make it easy to lock the entire case. Before the back is fastened to the base, it is cut with horizontal and vertical grooves to receive the horizontal and vertical sheets of glass, shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. The horizontal grooves, spaced to scale, represent the vertical distances between the levels at the shaft. The vertical grooves are placed wherever cross-sections of the workings are desired.

A year ago the authors published a paper on the solubility of sulphur dioxide in molten copper.l The data in that paper agreed closely with that obtained by previous investigators, which, however, did not agree with the theoretical predictions for solubility of triatomic gases of this type. It has generally been assumed that the reaction of solution is: 6Cu(l) + SO2(g) = Cu2S (in Cu) + 2 Cu2O (in Cu) [I] _ (CU2S)(CU2O)2 K = (Cu)6(Pso2) [2] Neglecting the slight change in copper concentration and considering that the concentrations of sulphur and oxygen are both proportional to the volume of gas absorbed, it follows that this volume should be proportional to the cube root of the pressure. It was found that a plot of the volume absorbed versus the cube root of the pressure gave a straight line, but that this line did not pass through the origin. Calculations of the equilibrium constant for the reaction showed that it was fairly constant for pressures above 100 mm. but that actually it approached zero at lower pressures. The conclusion was made therefore that the solubility as determined could not be expressed by Eq. I or by any other simple equation, particularly at low pressures. Other investigators have concluded that the solubility of sulphur dioxide in copper as well as in several copper alloys is more nearly proportional to the square root of the pressure.* Such a conclusion, however, does not satisfactorily account for the results, even when rather complicated mechanisms for the solution are assumed. The highly improbable speculations of Lepp2 and of Schneider and Esch3 based upon hypothetical dissociation pressures of Cu2O and CU2S dissolved in copper illustrate the type of reasoning that has been used to account for the discrepancy. In the discussion of the previous paper, the authors pointed out that the discrepancy might possibly be due to impurities in the copper, although the purest form available was used. Further consideration of the problem suggested that the impurities likely to have the greatest effect on the solubility of so2 in copper were oxygen, sulphur and carbon. Accordingly, further experiments have been made to show the effects of these elements. Experimental Methods The apparatus used for measuring solubility was essentially the same as that shown in the previous paper. However, since it was desired to make measurements at low pressures, a McLeod gauge was added and 6-mm. glass tubing was substituted for the capillary. This increased the "hot volume" considerably but was necessary in order to obtain good vacuums in a reasonable length of time. A mercury diffusion pump was also installed.

It has long been recognized by blastfurnace men that correct top distribution of materials is very important in efficient and economical furnace operation. Thousands of experiments on top design, filling, sizing, and other operations have been carried out to improving furnace performance by securing uniform distribution. Many of these experiments have worked out satisfactorily and have been passed along to the industry. Many of them have been discarded and forgotten. It has been the custom to judge the results of such experimentation by the results shown in improved or lowered furnace efficiency. While the effect on furnace practice will have to continue to be the final criterion of experimental changes, it has always been a desire of blast-furnace men to ascertain the reason for failure or success. Efficiency in the blast furnace approaching the maximum can be measured in several ways: (1) by actual operating results as revealed in the coke rate and tonnage figures, and (2), in the degree to which the top gas approaches the limiting ratio of CO/CO2 for the reduction of iron oxide by CO gas. This ratio is shown in the equilibrium curve in Fig. I for the system Fe-O-C and CO2-CO-C. The closer the top gases approach this limiting ratio (set at 1.08 by Martin1 because of the effect of limestone calcination) the more efficiently we may expect a furnace to operate. The fact that low CO/CO2 ratios parallel eficient operating performance caused us to investigate the cause of good or poor distribution and the effect of filling and other changes on furnace operation. Heretofore it has been possible to take a sample of furnace gas (usually from the dust catcher) and from it determine how closely the reducing gases were to the ideal or limiting value as set by the equilibrium diagram. However, to find just where in the top area the distribution was distorted and the top-gas CO/CO2 ratios were distant from equilibrium values has been a difficult and expensive investigational procedure. In an effort to overcome this difficulty, apparatus was designed to take gas samples and temperatures across the top radius of the furnace. It was hoped that with the aid of this apparatus traverse sampling of the ascending gases could be simplified, and the cost of sampling substantially lowered. Routine experimenting could then be maintained and results checked with furnace operation. It must be emphasized that a traverse sampling is necessary for a true picture, as single samples at any one point are unreliable. This statement can be verified by an examination of Tables 3 to 6, showing results obtained at our furnaces in a large number of tests. Apparatus The design of the equipment for taking the samples was governed by the need for providing a simple, routine test that could be performed fairly quickly without adversely affecting normal furnace operation.

In these troubled times free enterprise is maintaining vital molybdenum output, while expanding plant, and bringing in new low grade ore reserves, at Climax, the world's largest known molybdenum deposit. Climax Molybdenum Co. is putting $25 million into additional surface plant facilities and other millions into underground development. The expansion program to be operating by 1954 includes a new mining level, crushing plant, 4000-ft conveyor, milling units, by-products plant, and housing for 198 families. Completion of this program and low grade plant will add 10,000 tons per day to present capacity and several million tons to ore reserves.

ThIS note accompanies a study of grain structure changes in metal ingots produced by the alteration of fluid motion.1 Although the Prandtl Number of aqueous solutions is much higher than that for metals, it is quite instructive to see the simulation of freezing, as pointed out by Jackson and coworkers.2-4 Accordingly we have observed the effects of natural thermal convection, the changes induced by a steady-state rotation in one direction, and the changes under oscillation.' Temperature measurements were made under duplicate conditions whenever the visual observations appeared interesting. A solution of 15 pct NH4C1 in water was chosen. In each case the solution was preheated to 90°C in a 4-in.-diam Pyrex beaker filled to a level of about 5-in. depth and covered to prevent convective air cooling. The beaker was then placed in a container of iced brine, suitably arranged on a rotating table for movement about its cylindrical axis. Upon immersion in the brine under static conditions, fluid flow was observed near the wall of the beaker before the onset of crystallization, which generally commenced only after the temperature fell to 51.5"C. The region of flow extended about 1 mm from the wall and could not be observed elsewhere. The measured radial temperature increased sharply within 1 cm from the wall and thus over a distance considerably greater than that observed for the flow. However, we note that this difference of approximately one order of magnitude between hydrodynamic and thermal boundary layers should be expected for aqueous solutions, in contrast to metallic liquids. Beyond this layer the temperature was isothermal at a given height and in general nearly 10°C warmer than at the wall. The overall visual observation was therefore supported quite well by temperature measurement. THE following article presents notes and data compiled and computed by the writer for use in the determination of: size and slope of mill launders, details of junction boxes and downspouts, and distribution of pulp. It also includes pulp formulas, volume of discharge through bushings, paths of discharging streams, banking of turns and curves. In the design of a concentrating mill, the draftsman usually considers launders to the extent of providing ample "head" for transmission of pulp from one department of the mill to another. The superintendent of construction aims to build his launders wide and deep, and on a slope steep enough to ensure positive flow. So launders are laid generally on too steep a slope, with the result that the repair gang works to maintain launder bottoms and sides against the erosive action of the conveyed pulp. To this end many kinds of liners have been devised: concrete, mastic, white iron, glass, rubber. True, the reduction of slope to the point where a pulp will flow with minimum wear, will minimize labor and expense; but when the desired slope is not predetermined, the millman hesitates to readjust his launder slopes by cut-and-try methods. To the end that the desired size and slope may be found readily, the writer has: (1) conducted experiments with pulps of different specific gravity, screen analysis and dilution; (2) gathered a few graphic data from standard reference works (such as Peele's Mining Engineer's Hand- book and Taggart's Handbook of Ore Dressing); (3) computed several tables; and compiled results that have proved dependable for Utah Copper ore. It is quite possible that the following tables and graphs may not be applicable to all ores, but it is hoped that they may prove helpful, even in slight degree, in alleviating a portion of the trouble and migraine of some other millman.

Field experience with limestone and sandstone production indicates the existence of wide differences between the reservoir behavior of these two types of formation. Little attention appears to have been given to the separate study of the flow of fluids and the retention of fluids in limestones. This paper presents data and arguments to demonstrate the existence of a difference between the two types of formation, and urges the separate intensive investigation of limestone reservoirs. AH experimental data presented pertain to dolomitic limestone formations in west Texas and New Mexico. Two kinds of Porous media are recognized— intergranular and intermediate. Intergranular rocks are those in which the porosity and permeability are determined by the geometrical properties and the sorting of the sedimentary units; intermediate rocks, those in which there is no direct relationship between grain properties and the porosity and permeability. Limestones in general are intermediate media. The partial relationship between porosity and permeability of any class of Porous media is represelried by an area of .finite extent and definite shape on the permeability-porosity plane. The horizontal and vertical variations of porosity and of permeability in limestone and sandstone formations are discussed and compared. Comparisons are made of connate-water content, the relative permeability-saturation relationship, and capillary phenomena in the two kinds of rocks. A number of tentative conclusions are drawn relative to the reservoir properties of lime- stones; in particular, (I) dolomitic limestones are oil bearing and apparently are oil productive in zones of permeability less than 0.1 millidarcyj and (2) primary depletion (by gas expansion) oil saturations may be lower in dolomitic limestones than in sandstones. Introduction It is well known that the reservoir performance of limestones displays numerous irregularities when compared with that of sandstones, and that the departures from "normal" behavior of limestones are more frequent and generally more marked than in sandstones. This is particularly true of fractured limestones and those that have undergone considerable development of secondary porosity' A review of the literature of production research published during the past 15 years reveals a startling absence of theoretical and experimental investigations directed specifically toward explaining and predicting the performance of limestone reservoirs, even. though such problems as the prediction of water encroachment and the estimation of ultimate recoveries continue at the "inspired guess" stage. By far the greater part of the experimental data reported pertain to measurements on sandstone core samples, while the theoretical studies, almost without exception, are developed from the assumption of an ideal porous medium and therefore seldom are applicable to limestone formations. The chief cause of this situation appears to be the common belief that, to all practical intents and purposes, sandstones and the majority of producing limestone formations

OF the several professions-the chemist, the civil engineer, the mining engineer, the mechanical engineer-the courses of instruction, as arranged at the scientific schools, differ considerably as to the amount of practical information which the student is able to gain. The analytical chemist has facility for a very thorough review of the processes which he will be called upon to perform. The student in civil engineering by his field practice learns the use of his tools and the art of taking field-notes. The mechanical engineering student is in the vicinity of machine-shops, which he can visit, and at which he can work. The student in mining engineering has no such advantages. The mines are at a distance, and the railroad fare to get to them is oftentimes an insuperable difficulty. The aim of these laboratories is essentially to give to the student in mining and metallurgy a chance to study on a small scale the practical parts of his profession. We cannot, in a small laboratory, build a mine to timber, to work, and to survey; we cannot make artificial quicksands and other impediments to mining. In short, we cannot study exploration; but we can study the mechanical preparation and the subsequent smelting of ores. Before presenting the plan of these laboratories it may be interesting to indicate the progress of the idea from its beginning. During the summer of 1870 President Runkle visited the mines of Colorado, and while there, conceived the idea of making an expedition with the mining students to some of the Western mining regions. He talked over the scheme with many railroad and mining men, and everywhere received encouragement. In the summer of 1871 the Institute party visited the mines of Colorado, and spent six weeks in taking notes of them. President Runkle here conceived the idea of building up a mining and metallurgical laboratory ; and by the aid of Booth & Co. of San Francisco, a stamp-mill was obtained, with the Washoe silver-working apparatus. ALL mine ore here must be concentrated before shipment, which involves selective flotation. Three products are made: lead, zinc, and pyrite concentrates. The equipment and practice are so well outlined in the accompanying flow sheet that only a few amplifying remarks are necessary. After crushing at the mine to approximately 4 in., the ore is carried by aerial tram about 4 1/2, mi. to the mill. From 1800 to 2000 metric tons per day, excluding Sundays, is thus transported. At the mill, the buckets are hand-tipped into the bins. After crushing to pass a ¼ -in. square opening, the ore may be stored in reserve crushed-ore bins or ball-mill feed bins as desired. Total bin capacity at the mill is about 4000 metric tons. The concentrator is arranged in three independent grinding sections, each fed from its own storage bin. Grinding operations follow standard practice, with ball mills in single-stage closed circuit with classifiers, the overflow from which is delivered to the lead circuit rougher flotation machines,

In decarburized mild steel, the strain hardening arising from 1/2 pct strain can he partly recovered by subsequent heating, even though re crystallization or grain growth does not occur. This recovery varies from 5 pct in an hour at room temperature to 70 pct at 800°C. The variation with temperature was qualitatively similar to that reported for copper, but occurred at lower temperatures. Except for the initial portion (Bazdschinger effect), the stress-strain curve following recovery can be superimposed on the original curve by shifting it to the left. In other words, the tensile behavior is essentially the same after straining and heating as if there had been less strain and no heating. The importance of this observation in understanding simultaneous deformation and recouery is explained. AN earlier investigation1 on copper showed that strengthening due to strain hardening was augmented by heating at moderate temperatures, but was diminished by heating at higher temperatures, Fig. 1. Auxiliary experiments1 indicated that recovery and strain aging are independent processes, which may proceed simultaneously, and whose effects are additive as indicated in Fig. 1. In order to study recovery by itself, similar tests were made on decarburized mild steel, where strain-aging effects are known2 to be absent. MATERIAL, TESTING PROCEDURE The specimens were made from rimmed, hot-rolled SAE 1020 steel 0.040 in. thick, by stamping out rectangular blanks and end holes, Fig. 2, and pack milling the reduced section. These were wet-hydrogen treated2 for 16 hr at 720°C to remove carbon and nitrogen completely and then heated 1 hr at 850°C in vacuum to stabilize the grain size. Auxiliary ex- periments showed that heating up to 800°C will not cause grain growth. They were prestrained 5 to 7.5 mils per in. using the special grips shown in Fig. 2. Such small strains are less than the "critical" strain for recrystallization and, therefore, will not cause recrystallization, even at high temperature. The recovery treatment after prestraining and before the retesting consisted of heating for 1 hr in wet hydrogen at the desired temperature. In one test, Huggenberger gages were used to define more accurately the loading and unloading curves. Fig. 3 illustrates the creep during the early stages of unloading, the hysteresis due to cold stretching, and removal of hysteresis by heating.3 RESULTS The load-deflection curves had ratner widely differing shapes for different specimens, both before and after the recovery treatment. Some specimens showed perfectly smooth curves, Fig. 4, while others exhibited an inflection more or less suggestive of a yield point (Fig. 4 shows all extreme case). 7.3-1. Introduction. All phases of mining competent materials are affected directly by the results achieved from primary blasts. It is imperative that their design suit each particular set of mining conditions. In general, the round design must provide an adequate tonnage of material, properly placed with suitable fragmentation, to ensure that loading, haulage, and subsequent disposal or processing are accomplished at the lowest possible cost. Blasting rounds are designed by the proper application of cratering relationships developed for the single, concentric, confined explosive charge. Blasting for surface mining and most open-cut heavy construction, however, is characterized by the use of rounds, composed of a number of explosive charges with relatively long lengths, which are placed in benches with specific finite dimensions. Therefore, modifications must be made to the classical, single point-charge cratering concepts. It is the purpose of this discussion to outline the basic principles, significant variables, and procedures for their integration in the design of rounds that are applicable to conditions characteristic of surface mining. Because relatively insensitive blasting agents will be used in most instances, particular attention must be given to priming, control of confinement, and selection of charge diameters that ensure complete explosive-reaction execution. 7.3-2. General Considerations. The primary requisites for any blasting round are that it ensure optimum results for existing operating conditions, possess adequate flexibility, and be relatively simple to employ. It is important that the relative arrangement of blastholes within a round be properly balanced to take advantage of the energy released by the explosives and the specific properties of the materials being blasted. There are also environ- mental and operational factors peculiar to each mine that will limit the choice of blasting patterns.
